"We have spoken with so many recovering lawyers on this show, but I don't know that we have ever spoken with someone who is still in it. It's why when I connected with Melissa Gomez Nelson, I knew we needed to hear her story of plowing through college and law school becoming partner at a big law firm and choosing to go in-house at booze Allen Hamilton management and technology consulting firm. We're going to talk about the big picture, but also about how a girl from the Rio Grande valley learns the cultural nuance of legal life. Melissa, thank you for doing this. Thank you for having me Alicia. I want to start with you growing up as a border kid. Yeah. Tell me about some of those experiences as a child that led you to want to become a lawyer. My family, we were migrant farm workers. My dad was a labor contractor. And in the 6th grade, we started migrating to Indiana to work in the fields. And so my father would draft these contracts with the farmers for his own payment and also for the payment of the workers. And he was obviously bound by local labor laws and he did his best to understand that and make sure he was following it. He also did his best to make sure that he was compensating all of his workers very fairly. That was very important to him. But he was often selling himself short because he just wasn't equipped with the tools that he needed. He was in a lawyer. And not only was he not a lawyer, there was no one else in our family who was a lawyer. I'm the first in my family to graduate from college and to this day I'm the only lawyer in my family either on my mom's side or my dad's side. So even extended family, so for me, I knew that knowledge was power. I knew that if I became a lawyer, I could help protect my family. So you go to saint Mary's in San Antonio, was the idea to push through in two years. Yes. And it actually started before that. So I graduated high school in three years. I did dual enrollment courses, and I knew that the more college credits I could rack up for either for free or at a much lower reduced rate meant that I could go to a more expensive school for less time and I could still have enough money left to go to law school. So it was all part of my plan and it was very calculated. I knew that was what I wanted to do. When you then go to law school, did you already know that the law firm path was your path? I don't know that I knew exactly what kind of law I wanted to do. So the law firm route, it just kind of happened for me. When I was a first year, I was afforded a very prestigious summer associate position at a big law firm in Houston, which are typically reserved for second years, but I was afforded it after my first year because my grades were high enough. And so after I had that experience, I realized, I think I'm setting my standards and my goals too low. So I need to reach higher. What surprised you most about that experience being a summer associate at a big law firm? When I say I was a fish out of water, I really was. There were so many firsts for me. I had never not only have I never even been in an office like this before. I had never been in a room full of all white people. I was where I was the only Brown person growing up in the valley was the opposite. And that experience was really challenging because I think this is true for all minorities, quite frankly, and in big law. No one prepares you for this. They don't teach you this in law school. No one can teach you about law firm politics or what it's like, what exactly you have to do to survive, what you need to do to climb the ladder, no one prepares you for the 70 hours a week that you're going to work and the fact that you're going to have some days, all meals at your desk, no one prepares you for that. And the attire portion of it is a separate hurdle and challenge. So you take latinas and we have our own culture and our own sense of style as it is. And understanding that for some folks in a very conservative environment, that may not be celebrated in the same way that it would be celebrated for us. So I was a quick study and I learned very quickly what I needed to do to survive and to make it work and to be successful. The quick study, what did the quick study learn? Well, the quick study learned that you definitely can't wear hoop earrings when you show up in a meeting. The quick study learned that you needed to have the right suit and you needed to have the right shoes and you needed to have a silk blouse under your suit because if you don't have the right one, then that will be frowned upon. And not just frowned upon, that means you're not going to get, you're not going to get put on the right case. You're not going to get the top opportunity that you would. And you're not going to get to sit in the meeting with the client, and ultimately that was your goal. This podcast is sponsored by better help online therapy. "There's this book called unbound, which Neil lozano. He's like, they joke because bought doctor bob and Neil, look at each other's books. But it's like meals kind of like the Protestant version of doctor bob. Everything they do is very similar, but he's Protestant, but in his book unbound, which I think I've talked about before, one of the prayers is like Jesus, please forgive me for trying to save myself. And Jesus, like, no, you come and get me. You saved me. And I was thinking about that like the whole time of just how much we try to save ourselves. And we try to be enough, we try to manage and heal and God's just like, no, a lot of healing is just you surrendering. And letting me in and more and more opening yourself up and letting go of control. Yes. And even I feel like that corresponds with even just the mercy bit as well because we don't always look to ourselves as a savior, but sometimes we look to other people. I know, I'm married. And that was something that we talked about in premarital counseling. You can't look to your spouse to be your savior and to fulfill you and be your everything. And even if you're not married, there are tons of different relationships that we can kind of put that person on a pedestal. And place the expectation on them that they're supposed to save us. And when they inevitably let us down because they're not capable of being Jesus, then we're wounded all over again. And I think it's also just a mercy for others as we experience healing to take them out and put them in their proper place and re align our gaze on Christ. Who is our savior? It is capable of saving us. Yeah, you're not. You're no longer waiting on other people to heal themselves to get better to fix what you feel like they've broken inside of you. And I think we'll talk about that more in the forgiveness episode, but a lot of times we're waiting on other people, you need to heal. You need to get it together and you need to apologize and you need to come fix this. Whereas that's not merciful, that's like trying to control someone else. It's not like a place of love of one in the heel. Also not realistic, because some people won't. Some people on this side of heaven, we should continue to pray for them, but some people won't. They will not. And it might not be years until they do. And you can't rely on them for your own healing, others. I mean, in God's Marcy, he can bring that about..

"Shack more was really a few times have gotten to see him better than than i thought he would have put not the best at combining more vertical player. I like his early service. But it wasn't like louis looked like he was in rhythm arreola out to injury. It just seemed like it was so disjointed and so safe on gregg berhalter part. Look i know you want to see the kids. Everybody wants to see the kids because we don't know what they are yet. They could be by ten out of ten. You gotta have some experience in the lineup in your opener of a continental tournament right and if you see where he puts it it's kinda right in the spine of the team. A cost a legit in the midfield. Zimmerman czar. i mean that makes sense to me. You can't roll a team of eleven kids out there. Can you know. But i didn't say that put you went as safe as you could with it. Listen mentors inexperienced. He started in the back of the goal. You start a net and that's a position where you completely want somebody who showed you want experience. He told brag zone. Essentially you're going to be the number three moving forward in this program. No matter got the shout walker. Zimmerman hasn't played with the national team in quite some time. Miles robinson hasn't played with gregg berhalter very little. I'm not mistaken. In the center of the part you've got players like costa jackson. You'll who are young yet somewhat experience but not to experience with the national team so there isn't that all that great experience that you're talking about i would've mixed i would've matched and i would have gone a little bit. More explosive in the final third. Listen this is what it is this tournament and it doesn't matter we'll make account for you make it matter for you fair enough. Usa and mexico dominate gold cup usually. But they're not the only teams in it. We should shine some light on everybody else in the competition. By the way what am i. They took Courthouse spot played against salvador. And look at this at saw one to nothing but that's not the story. The story here is that alex not in his debut for la. Selecta gets the game with her. This is insane. alex roll. Don was in talks to go blatantly. What the ma a tri national and salvador what. They're mala and the us he chose. We will have something special going on lots of matt's a very difficult team to play against lots of ties in mls. Although us seven to vegas. I see you walking. I see you so alex's brother christian on the us roster hurt if you look at the bracket there is a potential scenario. Where maybe in the semifinals. We could have a Boa tang brother rematch. As we did at the two thousand and ten world cup champions of europe after beating england at wembley on penalties sunday in the penalty. Shootout that man. We did on a room on a hero. Three mrs for england per to them for marcus. Radford and jaden sancho who are. Get this and. i'm not exaggerating. A hundred and twenty minute substitute so effectively. Their first kick of the game is the penalty has gareth southgate. England manager asked too much of these players. Yeah absolutely under present. He wasn't the only one they weren't the only ones that miss usa. Obviously the shooter missed but concentrate on these two. I rash consensual when you're a substitute and you know you're going to come on and you come on. It's about getting adapted acclimated as quickly as possible to the rhythm of the game the first touch of the game make it a good one. Your psyche depends on that so you come on one hundred and twenty barely. Get a chance even touch the ball. You know. you're just pretty much coming on for the penalty. Kicks you start over thinking things. You start questioning yourself. You're very young player. You've never been in this situation and it's a decisive moment. You miss happens in sports but you missed this much on southgate as it is on these players fair enough so i'm glad you mentioned their age because i think that probably have factored into southgate's decision make radford's twenty-three sancho twenty-one these guys are very young. You mentioned because soccer. I mean he's just nineteen years old. It's obviously a lot of people have an opinion on what should've happened and hindsight's twenty twenty right at these guys. Think that pens were saying what courage from southgate to let the kids hit them. But nobody has an opinion. Quite like josie marina. So what exactly is it that the special one who of course you love so much on your shirt you got them on your frigging shirt halfway through the show last. So what is josie marino. Then have to say about this. It does not matter if you're great penalty taker not in this situation. Where we're sterling where was stones. and where was luke. Schenn think we love taking shots. Luke shots but.

"What a weekend we are coming off in europe. Plenty of hardware handed out and plenty of players from this region now have league winners medals dangling around their necks. Let's start in spain lollygag. What a title race. This was the very very jump back and forth. They went back and forth. They went in the end. Athletico madrid are your champions of spain. They do so thanks to a two one win over by other lead on the weekend holding off real madrid in the process. Eco didn't start but that's no surprise husband. Starting much of late. He did enter in the eighty fifth minutes. It was on the field. Is that the won. This title no surprise for anyone who's been following this title race. All season long luis suarez of course of course scored the goal that ends up getting outlet the title but as far executive reta concerned. Her it's pretty significant. He didn't start but he was on the field in the most important moments of the season here for diesel semi so clearly has faith in era. When it comes to the big moment it may not be the mexican national team fans want from it that let the it may not be the role. That judge wants athletic. Buddy has a significant role. "Time permitting as well if the infrastructure holds, so we've talked about this, we're going to continue to talk about it, but I wanted to give you a quick update from Springfield City is doing this as well. But a State House task force is continuing its discussion about reevaluating controversial statues and whether the new monuments should be added to the state Capitol grounds. And there's a few things you should know the hearing that they had yesterday and I don't know if this is in person or virtual. I know that our downstate Republican friend who have had on a couple times Tim Butler, he is the Republican spokesperson. He may be the ranking member of the Commission of Not positive, but he he's been on this program a couple times talking about this. Specifically and how they're going to go about it. And what witnesses for lack of a better description What experts are going to call in to say? Well, can Abe Lincoln, can we keep a blinking here? Can we keep Ulysses s grant here? Obviously, nobody's perfect. All right, But by and large a net positive for American history. Can we agree? Abe Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant. I mean, come on. But there's there's some others that are problematic, obviously, so they're trying to ask the experts. What should we do? So here's what happened yesterday. This is a hearing. It's only the second meeting of the bipartisan Statue and Monument Review Task Force. I had a professor from Adam. I oppressed for the universe. Chicago. He was one of the speakers yesterday. Adam Green, he said statues and monuments and memorials and the naming practices for buildings, parks, streets and other components. Of the built environment, play a crucial role in defining communities. And I wanted to read more of his testimony and essentially, and this is where I come down on this. If it's public property, the public can decide what they want to do with their public property. What is better for 100 years? Doesn't matter. Public changes It mutates just like a virus. And when the public changes the public's Values opinions. They changed, too, so the public can vote or decide through their elected representatives. What you want to do with your public land. That's my policy. So, basically Adam Green, so that then they had an associate art history professor from Southern And she said the task force must ask what values they wish to collectively endorse in the public realm. That gets a little stick here. That that that that gets a little stick here because now you're arguing about Whose definition of Judeo Christian government are we going to take here? One that we've had, or the one that some people now want toe. Again mutate, morph into city of Chicago's undertaken a similar examination of our statues here. Obviously, the Christopher Columbus monuments are now apparently in storage someplace. Like Dick Cheney there in some undisclosed location, Apparently Last year, the office of the architect of the Capitol removed monuments of Stephen Douglas and Pierre Menard from the Capitol grounds because, and this is under orders from the former speaker. Mike Madigan. Douglas was a slave owner. That's it. You're out and Menard. Actually, we had a What do we have on? He was either a professor of history. Or maybe a politician who said Stephen Douglas is actually more a complicated case because it was apparently when he married his wife, She, in fact, in her family Had property South. You know, south of Illinois is Kentucky, huh? And, uh, In those days. Kentucky was a slave state, so he kind of, you know, married into that situation, But that's enough in 2021 to get cash here. Okay, I get that, and she recommended Rudy Lozano. Labor activists. Chicago's Little Village neighborhood also be included. I don't know anything about Mr Lozano Rachel Liebowitz, season assistant professor of history at the State University of New York. She was also part of this yesterday. And she said caution. Don't add too many monuments and memorials to the Capitol grounds, she pointed out Texas They've gone nuts. They have 22 statues on the Capitol grounds itself, and she said it is Maybe historically accurate, fine. That's in the eye of the beholder, but it's definitely physically. It's clutter, and there's just too many. So, she said The committee should also consider relocating statues and monuments from the Capitol grounds to another place like the Hall of Statues. Which that's a good idea because Uh, the next time The Springfield A capital is breached by writers. They can go to statue a hall and they can take Selfies by the statues. So hey, that's a positive So that's the latest update again will reach out to Ah, representative Flowers and once again our friend on the Republican side, Tim Butler to talk more about this, if not before, certainly after their next hearing.
