"Some years ago. I was managing construction march destruction projects in appalachia and I'd be suffering a lot of people. And i just. I just absolutely love with those people out of area. Just just a gorgeous place. But i also saw something that was really tragic and the the opioid crisis and which is continues. There now A heartbreak and i got to thinking. I wanted to write something larger than a short story and i thought i was fascinated with this whole concept building. A prison on a mountaintop with with the book is about and I also thought you know it's interesting. How people are so much aware these days of the opioid crisis but we only see it in the big cities and with people don't realize is really becoming tragic in rural america And if you're in a big city like even dayton ohio here or or cleveland or new york There are many resources there to deal with the police department. Say very narcotics division and so forth. You go into rural america and like a like the south west virginia where this place. This book takes place. You gotta sheriff. You'd deputies they can't do anything. They're were helpless. These people are really in trouble because they're high unemployment A lot of pressure to get into the drugs and Very little resource to get off the drugs and it's heartbreak so i thought i'd like to. I'd like to present that. I'd like to create some awareness of that but more to do it in the sense of the fashions and put into a novel. We're we're for our listeners. Who might not be real familiar with the appalachia that area. Can you do right. can you give a of the area itself. Are these like small towns with maybe five hundred people in the other diners. There's no big business. It's a diner. There's a hardware store. I listen to describe like yeah. There's a town the town Low creek which is in town that we have in in the book They have won two diners. Wants fancy and one is Is the one similar to one. That i had experienced when i was in the area where they have special of the day at lunchtime is like five dollars in the same special. That at six o'clock and it's six dollars you know Podcast life one. Don't work of course you know it's gonna be in it but there's there is a tragic element to it too because ever. Since the cool clothes moves areas the in industry came in and industry went back out again. Such high unemployment and people really don't know what to do so somebody turned the drugs. It didn't before we asked you to give an overview of the book itself. I just have to ask you. So we don't hear so much about the opioid crisis. I used to live down in atlanta and they said it was really really bad. But it's hitting people if you go through like even the city's shit there's the hines were beautiful. Everything looks fine from the outside..

"Yeah. Okay. Yeah. It was a big. They have painting of it in their house right now it's right on a low creek but yeah cabins Stu apartment pretty much got you But yeah, he grew up down south country boy big roll tide fan but So then yeah, gets deployed meets my Omaha she had always wanted to meet in. American man especially after World War Two ten, they got Hollywood. Yeah. They got married while they were over there especially a Hollywood American boy. So they got married while they were over there had my dad rick and then they warn in Germany he was born in Germany Oh shit. Yeah and Bee's button about that and So then they flew back in my granddad was still deployed. So he stayed and Omar always tells the story of when they're flying back in. She kept asking everybody where the sign is where's the signed? Where's the? Hollywood sign. She finds out later she was. Other side of the country from the Hollywood sign. But a slightly different spot they've been They stayed in Charlotte, their entire marriage and they've been married for I. Guess Now About Sixty Years Your Lord and so my my grandad he is a bad ass he fought in Korea and Vietnam. He was a paratrooper in both boots on the ground in both men we're going to try to have this guy on at some point stories unbelievable. Yeah. He he's definitely one of my heroes and one of my icons but every time he calls me probably once a day a day when I was sitting there. Yeah. We talk all the time just to catch up and I mean right now they're super board. You GotTa think we at least have phones and stuff to keep us occupied all. He has his John Wayne AMC movies he seen about every year and his I'm down would that marathon? Yeah I love those movies. Even if John Wayne was a piece of shit, we used to watch We used to watch the lone ranger every morning he would. He would pick me up at five am so we can get back to his house at this is when I was young young like really young so it would he'd pick my. Parents were worked. So my my mom like I've said, my dad was a fireman see work twenty, four hour shifts sometimes period of time I'm on work nine to five that wasn't work from home. She now works from Home and during that time, this is when my sister was really young as well. I spent a lot of time at my grandparents house German was actually my first language Buck really I be it anymore? No but from when I was like one year old two, three years old I stayed pretty much with my own all the time because my granddad would go up to the VFW, which is a bar for veterans and. The WS. Yes. The they're like bars lounges type of it's not really like A. Bar. But. It's like a loan and you go and drink there and talk about war stories veterans to hang. Absolutely. Absolutely. There's it's all older guys all Super Nice. But yeah, my Omar would only speak to me in German. So my parents tell me stories that I would come home and talk to them in German. It's like a three year old and here like what the fuck is this say it's kind of creepy. Yeah. Now I nine, nine, nine awful soft. That's all I remember apple juice the soft apple stuff because you just loved apple juice or what? Yeah. Loved Apple and Martineau. He's up in apple so good and then on my mom's side, I have my Nanna and she has Alzheimer's as well. So definitely relate to you with everything you've gone through with your Mimi but yeah. Only, Unani the whole time. No. So I had my my grandpa growing up he will technically is my step grandad my mom's actual father died of a brain aneurysm when she was like twenty six. So I never got to meet him apparently feature wise I look I did the closest to him of anybody in my family tree of rural. Yeah. That's what my mom says in picks. I've seen pigs so not many because I mean he he passed in the I guess early eighties. So I mean there's not light and they were a poor family So there's not like a ton of pictures of him weren't like super affordable at that point. IPHONES and triple H D four K. video cameras in our hands. Yeah. But triple H is not a thing by the way but I Yeah. So my Nanna she's kind of in the process of probably slowly working towards more of a memory care unit type setup our we try to go over there. My mom goes over there every Saturday to help them out, but and then I tried my dad goes over to my grandad's probably every week to help them out as well but. See Him as much as we can. Tighten it. Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. One of the main things like benefits from my family to is that I've always they've. Always been that way. Absolutely. My mom is like super involved in has been super involved in making sure. My Mimi, her mom gets taken care of. So on the other side on your mom's side What were the two names of the? What do what do you call it? On my I call them, my GRANDPA. He was my my my step grandfather he passed away when I was. Probably twelve twelve years old I've always been closer to my Granddad on my Dad's side via. Sure just because my granddad like we would go out, he would take me hiking. He would we'd go out on all these walking trails and we'd go and mess around the forest and play outside all the time my grandpa and my mom shied quarrels we squirrel Oh yeah, oh? Yeah. We'll yeah, we'd have little. BB guide low BB gun that I kept over there fighting the good fight. Oh. Yeah. But then my GRANDPA's like he taught me how to play. It was like a Super Analytical Technical Guy. So we go over there and that's where I learned to play chess. So like when I was like ten is disgusting at Chess Noche is I we would spend eight hours a day playing chess. We got to play chess on the street at some point as I've got that chessboard. Let's do in great shape. One of the ponds heads fell off can I wear a what's it called a Can Wear monocle. Yeah cool. As long as I can wear Monica literally anytime you want a wild to me we have a everybody has different names for their grandparents absolutely like on my mom's side, my Mimi, the offered me speak about many many times who's in a memory care unit.

You'RE GONNA save money on all these all the CHEAPO slip implies that you'd have to attach together because you can make this one hundred foot. Whatever you walk hundred frigging put. All you need is a slow a little slope. And if you don't have one you do like we did make one you make one you get a front end loader. And you just scrape. They're easily going downhill okay. We didn't have it exactly even so leaned to Breida's even now you remember we kept sliding off of it. I don't know why in the world we tried to do it in our your anyway. The remnants from it lasted about four years afterwards. Now it's finally finally almost greyhounds is still also a little bit of a slope that I didn't feel that bitching no Sir Zuma feel that in. Bought the win. That's why we had it like on yet. So there's two new things that you can do in the country the kind of city now next time we do have some another thing to say. But I'm not gonNA spol- has something to do with a river with a L. Yes that was in bad areas S. Although I'm GonNa tell you okay now. Are you set and a real river? Principal Welsh announced an escalation is shade war banning the trade of all POKEMON cards. He said quote. I'm calling for a total and complete shutdown of all snow. Relax decks until we figure out what's going on a few questions first of all. Can the principal do this? Absolutely not he is way beyond his authority. Here it's mind blowing for years the foundation of our elementary school continue to unmistakable truths first. Everybody Needs Kuti. Start and second that free. Trade is essential to the health of this school Isabella. I want to turn to you. Why are they teachers? Speaking about this clear abuse of power well does the teacher speak up when principal appointed Jimmy Johnson Hall martyr. Even though he's the biggest bully and fifth grade teachers speak up when he tried to ban all sanger painting because one kid eight the paint again. It looked like it was edible. We know this about the teachers. They are complicit. They are egotistical. And they are. I saw Sali's can I just say something? This a principal who is stoking divisions. He's making us learn long division. Every phone has a calculator a man I can. I say another thing. There's no reason we learned to play the recorder visible lonely instrument. Let's get back on track. I think we need to face the facts here. And this is unpleasant to admit but the principle is a fart face this principle who has shown time and time again that he's a fart face but all of his neighbors are too afraid to say principle welches afar face. It's always like calling someone. A fight face is worse than actually being a fart face being a fart faces. How is the principal? Welsh is sung got student of the month. You're talking about Pixel Walsh Judea. Yeah he doesn't even know what a fraction as and all of a sudden he's doing morning announcements and getting straight as part of a larger pattern of corruption. I mean why is it? That principle Welt is forcing us to learn cursive. No one writes cursive anymore. It's because pistol. Welsh is a right to protest in out an outright supremacist. This is not normal. Let's also not forget that. Principal Welsh has repeatedly committed adultery and Tommy Reminder listeners adultery as adultery is when you ask an adult why they're doing something and they say because I'm an adult and you aren't. I hate adultery. My Dad always commits adultery. When I ask why he gets T- ice cream for dinner. My Dad also committed adultery. And now I get to Christmases Isabella. What our listeners. "Intelligence. Make no mistake America. Great American again. This is the Buck Sexton show, former CIA analysts, remember NYPD, Buck Sexton. The economy's folks care about we all know that right? The economy gets people to pay attention. Usually when the numbers come out at least somewhat. Well, we had some numbers today about GDP growth last year. And some people are saying that it's not a good story for the president US economy grew two point nine percent in two thousand eighteen what does that mean? What can we say about this vis-a-vis other presidents? We got the lady herself to join us now. Ms Mattie Doppler, senior fellow president of forward strategies known to some of her favorite people as doubles, Mattie. Great to have you on. You as well. Back now. Now, it's just you me and a few hundred thousand people across America. So that's is friend exactly just France. So tell me, Mattie, what what are we what should we make of these numbers because I feeling that some of my live friends tomorrow are going to be giving me a hard time saying, blah, blah, Trump's not the builder. He said he was what are you say? Exactly, right. Okay. So this morning what we got why the data on GDP growth for the fourth quarter. This was delayed because of the government shutdown normally see this data in January. It was delayed until now. So we'll see revision on these actually next month as well. But what we saw was a two point six percents GDP growth for the fourth quarter after a couple of different numbers. But it's important that people understand what the full picture and other data. We thought today to six percent for the fourth quarter that was up from two point two percent that economists thought we would see her fourth quarter growth, you remember the fourth quarter was a little has been craziness going on. The stock market, of course, trade hundreds but China for I and housing has been down for most of the year. So the economists were expecting that we thought we would see a bigger in two four the ultimately we did. But what that means for the entire year because that's the last quarter we data. We're getting for twenty eighteen is that overall annual average growth for twenty two point nine percent. Pretty darn that that is a good taste like Honey to be home. A lot now detractors, of course, let's say, hey, President Trump said we'd be at three percent growth where where's that grows? Well, you're one tenth of a percentage of oh, you're looking at the average rate, but if you also look at fourth quarter growth measured from the fourth quarter of twenty seventeen then it's three point one percent is what we're looking at for the growth for that science, here communists? Do both these things they look at the average annual growth handy look at quarter to quarter growth to assess the health of the. Economy. So it's both true. That Trump has got three percent growth for twenty eighteen involved. Not true. That it has he was able to mirror it out three percent growth for twenty eighteen. But even in that context to nine percent or three point one percent. That's a pretty strong number for the US economy, particularly when we're looking at a global slowdown in growth with some of our closest ally allied, and of course, with some of the biggest economies in the world China being number one. Now, how does this? Of course, I care most about America and have the economy's doing for America. But if we're going to line-up how Trump is doing so far in terms of GDP growth with Obama and all the socialists around him. How does this actually how does this actually go? Tell me about the number the average rate of growth, so that's an average number each year during the recovery during the President Obama's right? I should say rain, but you know, how we should have president. She's during President Obama when he was off that was two point two percent. And if you recall when President Trump release his. I budget. He was saying that he would get a three percent growth for the last couple of years and all of the luminaries on the left came out to say that impossible. There's no way we'll see three percent growth at the fantasy. That's crazy. Three percent is outrageous because they of course, we're still used this new normal of one point seven percent two percent growth every quarter. So and I would. On the side there that President Obama's budget called for four percent growth. Even though we are in the middle of a contraction. He said that that was one. Apparently, these guys weren't got call them but three percent growth during fans into them was just lunacy. So that for a little bit today where we now see that were at or above three percent forty year. It's a pretty darn good number ever flex strength in the economy. That'd be certainly haven't seen throughout the rest of this recovery. And you know, there's a lot of debate about who gets the credit for that. I think less important to talk who gets the credit for that. And a little bit more about what lessons can be learned from this. There's been a live discussion. I'm Twitter today with people thinking they're dunking on the president by ordering. Well, bomber had a fourth quarter growth number that was better than this one. He had a three point eight percent growth number in the fourth quarter twenty fifteen which is true. He had a great number into in twenty four by it needs to also be stated that Obama in. In twenty thirteen signed a math attack in LA, namely, the extension of the Bush tax cuts. Majority of those were made permanent by Democrats and Republicans in congress, and then President Obama finding that until one later that year in twenty fifteen he halfback was with a number of tactics standards. So for people who say that this these numbers somehow reflect some kind of leaker Chelsea or deficiency in the cage, Nathan tackling their Trump. And then since I twenty fifteen and an understanding of that is not understand your history about what's happening in Washington over the years, which is that we've had a low creek towards better tax policy. One thousand expedited immensely, but it has the passage of the happened job back in twenty seventeen one thing I've known for a while from both academic time as well as being in the media, Mattie is that economists can't predict squat. But I am seeing today. People saying that. Well, this is good is it's going to be right. That's another way of taking a taking a swipe at Trump here. What do you? I don't listen to a communist. But I listened to Mattie. What do you think about what we should expect for twenty? Nineteen and going into the election mean how we felt the full lift from the tax cuts. You know, are there any other reasons to think that things could get better or are you expecting kind of status quo? What do you think? Well, we have seen both in today's added. But the data that we've seen over the last several months in certainly for the remainder of twenty eighteen is that a lot of important metrics that proponents of tax reform had said would be affected by tax reform are showing up when I need my business investment capital expenditure, and the kind of spending you want to see an economy that will benefit not just businesses. But people down the income ladder that happening. We saw that today was named continuing to rise in the data that we thought this morning but over the fourth of last year. He thought he is he had their fourth highest. I've been here. We've been tracking that kind of data what we're seeing is businesses responding to a competitive environment that they hadn't expected that they would have and if they hadn't experienced in the recent past so as long as the competitive nature of the US economy that both have the deregulation continues that kind of activity will certainly can tell you. There are a number of factors that kind of hang out there in the balance as an economic question, Mark, the trade discussion between China and the United States is certainly one of them becoming increasingly worried that the president not seeing enough movement on the conversation with China will move instead new terrorist, especially targeted this time at the EU. I here's our taxes, and they are paid by Americans on consumer products. And that having knocked me because you're a consumer driven economy. Seventy percent of our GDP comes from consumer spending held the consumers start city threatened that when I start to worry overall. Turn a lot. But I really think that it's important that we protect the American consumer in a way that allows them to benefit from the competitive nature may competitive environment that has been foster for businesses here in the United States and in a way that they can do that with one Javanese without concern. They'll be short-lived, and I say that when it comes to tax side. What that remain in the code in twenty fifteen or not they will start to start to change in twenty twenty two and the individual tasks I significantly in twenty twenty five now that of course, the long runway to get something done. But if we don't have a conversation in congress for how to do that that certainly can start increasing anxiety. I downward pressure on the economy for sure Ueno, Mattie. I feel a little better now. So thank you for all that. I feel like we're all going to be okay. Because he says it's all going to be right. Mattie Doppler, everybody Matty, aren't you went on rising tomorrow? I sure am subbing for the wine. Only Buck Sexton. I will be on TV hoping rising. What of all there you go late? It's ladies will not ladies night. But ladies morning on rise eight right, which is even better, lower caffeinated reading more days. There you go Mattie Doppler here tomorrow, a hill dot TV slash rising, senior fellow N P, president forward strategies, MS doubles worth great to have you on. Thank you so much. Thank you. We'll.

"I'm very excited about today's show because we have these senior editor for Forbes magazine on the bottom half of the show, and we have the franchise of the year for Oxy fresh on the show met Klein. How're you doing? My friend. I'm doing great today, guys. Hope you are doing well as as well. So excited about today's show and being able to have our franchisee of the year on here to talk to guys Oxy fresh, no matter how did he, how did he get that award? What is the the, you know, the parameters that you gave that aboard out. Yes. So for Jesse and Charles, they have been in our system your few years now and just comes down to their ability to utilize all the, the resource that we have it is it is multi tier to not only just them being at the top in terms of sales numbers, but also we look into things as into, you know how their systems, how they can be a resource for other franchisees across the country. They're very involved with the home office. They are pushing the envelope on things that we can do better on at the home ops as well, because it certainly is a two way street, right? It's just not us telling branch ID's what to do, its franchisees, giving us their, you know, their two cents into what can make them operate their businesses better day to day. And so they're very, very good at that. They've helped all sorts of different departments than in Ocoee fresh just operate better. Right. You always get better. So they're very good at that. Jesse. I'm not sure if you have read this article that you're featured in entrepreneur dot com. There's an article that says, this pan of brothers. Operates three franchises at eighteen low creek eighteen locations across four states. My friend, welcome onto the thrive time show. How are you doing? How're you doing today?
