The Problem with 'Just in Cases'
"It just in cases by Chris love of Dot Com. We've all said it. No let's keep keep that just in case. I wonder how many times we've subconsciously. Thought it or openly expressed our desire to keep something and then to this day never used it for its intended purpose we call these just in cases does popped up the other week and I'm inclined to share as my partner and I now have this as a running joke. Whenever one of US says those magical words the just in case the other one repeated in a ridiculous voice I can confirm? We are hilarious. Eighteen months into minimalism. Something has changed. I I am more aware. More conscious more. Intentional and more mindful of what is adding value. I look back now recognize what was going on. Each time was presented with with an item that I wanted to keep. Just in case I'd invented a scenario where the item would feature prominently. There were positive negative scenarios born for my own imagination. which convinced me that I'd be wrong to throw it away so there it would stay? It was the one percent highly unlikely time where one of the things would be required. I'd have it. They're ready ready to go. Fully prepared ninety nine percent of the things may not get used and they'll take up space but you never know. Surely this wasn't a huge deal. The Justin cases are not holding holding us back or anything like that. They were out of sight out of mind not bothering. Anyone will do what I thought until I look for something are footstool in my partner said that the stuff in there was stressing her out to be honest. It was a bit of a mess but it was all just in cases that had always been there hidden. Nobody would know someday. Maybe they'd come in Handy. When we had an opportunity to explore the scenarios attached to each thing it became clear that the Justin cases where the getaway to the deeper fear of missing out the fear that if I discarded carded something a potentially miss out on a great experience or have to pay again for something I already owned which would then make me feel inadequate more stupid for getting rid of it in the first place lays someday maybe need them so enough to deal with that fear or expands the three d glasses from the cinema? We kept these just in case we go to another three D. movie we will go to the cinema again soon and invariably you'll be given a free pair in any case. I guarantee that we would forget to take them anyway. The poker chips is a good one. I've I to says a poker chips. I bought another set because I forgot already had a set felt for the table and three sets of playing cards. I kept these because one day I will host a poker night with my friends ends. We've done a couple before two thousand nine and maybe twenty sixteen. So maybe they're worth keeping looking deeper into it by kept them all so it gives me a catalyst suggested and hang out with my friends. We don't eat poker to hang out and we do regularly anyway. No one has ever said that they really fancied playing poker. Someday maybe eight plug extension boards. Yes that's correct. Eight

"Thousand nineteen from sleep the gist I might pass you to personality Cutie Pie has withdrawn his offer to give fifty thousand dollars to the Anti Defamation League and my major reaction is I am upset with having to know who Cutie Pie is now Felix Arvid Ov- Shellberg that is a guy worth knowing that Pudi pies real name which I do not want you know I I do not want to hear about pupae via text speech or just content. Let us consider the general category of content. Don't WanNa know about puberty. I I just like you should be resentful of having to know it's really know who trump's three national security advisers have been after all. Obama's was National Security Advisor James Jones and Tom Donilon. We're probably not on your radar then he ended with Susan Crisis Is National Security Advisor which you probably did no and that's fine. We also note on an interim basis. There was acting chief Elizabeth woolridge grant. No there wasn't because Elizabeth woolridge grant is the real name of Lana del. Rey and I do not want to have to know who Lana del Arabia's. I'm good she sings. That's fine you like her good for you. She apparently did not retract donation to the AD L. But my not knowing is all I have. That's what protects me and my last few Mata comes of unsullied unimposing upon brainwaves. Maybe maybe you don't care about some of the things that I like caring about for instance. Did you know that the United States National Basketball Team lost big international competition yesterday. Do you know that Daniel Daniel shaking his head. No no he did not know that and you know what good good for Daniel if he didn't know and if you didn't know it's probably cost you didn't care key doesn't care and that caring. It's great you're doing the Lord's work by not carrying. Here are my rules of thumb care about what you want to care about care some about what you need to care about a little breads breads chore proroguing. Don't sweat it that some version of democratic theft is going on in North Carolina. You should care the exact nature of the theft only if you'd like the Alabama sharpie thing was an interesting test case you'd be fine not caring. I thought this for days and days but then trump made sure that each and every one of I knew what a ham handed match botching bloviating he is well. If you insist Mr President I gotTa Care So should you care about the democratic debate tonight. Because there is one shore you should that it's going on and that some things will happen but you need to know that cory booker really owned the stage or that. Andrew Gang needed to seize the moment which to direct critiques from last time now you're good. How about the fact that Joe Biden seems to be losing it well. I hope to do care about that because that is the topic of my spiel but I John Lovett is a co host of Pod pod. Save America has its very own podcast who doesn't love it or leave. It is the name of that. I'm more in the former camp. John came by to talk about his upcoming. Show at Radio City. Yes the the music hall that Radio City not a cut rate discount electronics store of Times Square run by a couple of Armenian brothers. That was the old Radio City Music Hall Radio City in China and I also talked about democratic politics and the perils of panel discussions with insufficient pushback doc so I tried to provide all the push back I could muster and I told him if you don't love it well. The rules of etiquette demand that so with that in mind here John Lewis it. I do love my cats. Let me tell you a little bit about them Oliver. He he's definitely going to be the one to protect us from the squirrel outside when the squirrel shows up near a window that guy he's got his hackles raised and he's he's ready to fight. Thank you Oliver downside when he's hungry. He'll jump on your face layla on the other hand. She's great with the licking of the face lots of looking at the face I did. That's both good thing and a bad thing. Yeah looks both ways but there is one thing about the cats. Don't love so much. It's the litter box which is why Armin. Even Hammer created new cloud control litter. There is no cloud of Nasties when you scoop it is one hundred percent dust free free of heavy perfumes it helps reduce airborne dander from scooping so what happens in the litterbox stays in the litterbox new cloud control cat litter by arm and hammer more power to Ya when I started listening to the love it or leave it podcast. I said well how could you how could you not the name like that and in fact not only did it have a title it had an out if I did not love I would leave it but I have not left it because it is a weekly compendium mm-hmm of John Lovett of pod Save America and the Obama White House talking to clever people about the lighter side of politics. No I mean it's not really light. Sometimes they go pretty pretty hard. At some of the people on Fox News John Lovett is here in advance of his performance at Radio City Music Hall which will be win the twelfth the Thirteenth Thirteenth Thirteenth. Don't show up on the twelfth. You might get the Trans Siberian orchestra. I don't have the radio city scheduled but I do have John. Love with me. Hello John Thanks for coming in. Thanks for having me all right. Thanks for match my energy. I got it. Isn't that the point okay John. I do I do so enjoy your show. Thank you both your shows. Thank you yet. I have APP said I'm I'm. I'm starting. I'm charging out of the gate here with teak. Why have said that. I don't know if this trend of three people agreeing with each other is the best trend and in terms of interesting radio slash podcast listening and getting to the truth. What say you Sir wow you could say sometimes you have four people sometimes even at at times had five people agreement so first of all. I would say there's a difference between having a few liberals around the table and having a few people that agree on everything sitting around the table. Oh yes it is true. We all are people who come at things from a liberal perspective. We don't always agree. I think Pod Save America love it or leave it. This is about the big conversation. Liberals are having amongst each other about how to fight back against trump and the forces that enabled someone like trump and we see it as an onramp for people who you're are either just committed liberals who want to be involved or people who are maybe not so involved in politics before trump or trying to learn about it and some disaffected people who don't understand understand what politics is part of their lives in one great access point to that is not people bickering around a table but people having a friendly conversation because their friends about some of the most important issues who's facing the country the way they would talk about them. When there weren't microphones there are times when I can get specific if you want there are times when when in general like-minded people reinforce each other ideas and is the listeners say well. What about this it goes on a drastic? I wonder well. Why wouldn't you benefit from someone injecting note note of disagreement at least as a touchstone to make your arguments stronger. I think that that has real value and I think one of the things that we should be challenging eligible ourselves to do and I think we do it on the show. You know we're not gonNA listen. You're smart guy. You're listening. You're thinking of stuff. We're not thinking of that's right but I like to think that in the moment we try to challenge orange each other. I mean I wouldn't WanNA listen to your show and I don't listen to any shows where it's a bunch of people who aren't being intellectually dishonest who are just trying to kind of put out the liberal message conservative message more likely to be the conservative message without being critical without without using their intellectual faculties. I like to think that we try to challenge ourselves. Challenge challenge a challenge are a preconceived notions and try to admit when we don't know the answers and we're just sort of offering a thought and opinion when we're truly not sure one of the you know. We've been having a debate about impeachment. I think John and Dan sought as the right thing to do. I think Tommy was the last of us to come on board. Thinking it was the right thing to do is because the temperature no it was about being mercenary. It was about saying look. Let's just be honest. We do this by something. Everyone talks about all the time. I'm not a left to right by US but a biased towards believing your policy preferences or the correct political strategy is a classic bias that he might have a name. I don't even know what it is this. Does it have a name that bias. I think it's called. MSNBC ITIS good all right all right. We're having fun but the but but you know we would challenge our own challenge. Each Other you know is is impeaching. Donald trump the more elite courageous and correct thing to do that to us. I think was quite obvious short but there was a real debate about out whether it was the right thing to do politically. Maybe what you know some of these moderates and he's sort of establishment. Dem's he skittish people. Maybe they have a point a mousy. He came out the mouse of a Republican majority in the Senate. You know one thing today. There's now an ongoing peach angry out of the Judiciary Committee. They've basically said as much in their efforts to get trump documents via the court system and then Steny Hoyer has asked is there in a petri increase has no. There's an investigation the frustrating he's very very d triple. C steny Hoyer it right there so those are the kinds of things we're talking about and and those are places where liberals don't all agree you worked with Joe Biden a bit a bunch. Tell me how much honestly not very much I was was a speech writer for President Obama. That was mostly my exposure. Was You know working on speeches for the president and I didn't have too much day-to-day contact with with by does he seem cognitively tiddly different from when you were there I again. We talked to Joe Biden for an hour. Joe.

Can Disney make VR relevant? (The 3:59, Ep. 510)
"The. Fifty nine chat, Ben talks Rueben. Disney is betting bigger on VR. Are also got the scoop that Disney has ordered a top secret VR project. This is after in the middle of showing off its first VR short film called cycles. The director of this one Jeff Gibson. I will be tapped to work on the second project. We think this is this a big deal that Disney is betting bigger on the are. I think that if VR is ever going to become a thing and entertainment, folks, like, Disney and. Warner brothers. All these guys need to jump on board and get excited about it. This is really the second. I know this is interesting that they are getting bigger on VR, but this is really their second project. So I think we have a long way to go. The other issue that I have with VR and entertainment as like, there's a chicken and egg issue here where Joan and her story talks about if there's must have entertainment than people will get the headsets. Yeah. I wonder if it's the other way around where why are people buying the headsets? It's been a couple of years. I think part of the dilemma is that some of this must see content is out there. But no one can really see it. I mean places like Sundance were Joan is is where cycles is airing. But you can't actually the general audience can actually see this stuff. Yeah. A lot of the best content. It's sort of like it's saved up for just like the industry interceptors. And no one else really can get experience of VR can actually be. So maybe the stuff will start to trickle down in a couple years. And it'll be. Easier to watch it Google cardboards been around for a while. I can't crash experience. It's true. But like why can't it be easier to just see this stuff rare? I I don't know. I think it's still going to stay news. That's at least my expectation. All right. Let's talk about robots are on Katie Colin spent the week interacting with robots CS. What did she find a lot of different robots? There's like a ping pong robot in skeleton robot would help people I don't know in warehouses pickup boxes share. But also people with disabilities potentially. What is augmenting your legs? There's the Lovett which is a cuddle robot. It's like if you're yeah. Compared by which I never really understood like the silly companion buds. But okay, Sony, right. It's a companion bought. Yes. Yeah. And then also like the weird seal that I think a Japanese company makes that you're supposed to them and feel better. I was at the RF that's a retail. Show a couple of weeks ago, and they also had a like an inventory robot. So it's this weird cylinder ical robot that goes up and down aisles at a store like a CVS check. What needs to be inventory in an apparent also help customers out there like go to this aisle? If you wanna get toothpaste, I think that's one of the more interesting aspects of Katie story is that it wasn't just robots moving around and doing things as robot's reacting tease. Sometimes even looking at like, your is understanding some level of human error actions. So it could better address your questions or better service companion like that like that for a little while. But it's no a lot of it seems to replace human interaction on my mind, and like people are already so stuffed into their phones that I do have a bit of a problem with the ping pong robot. It's like oh find a buddy to play. That's the thing that are probably places where companionship, that's an issue. There are lonely. They're alive only people out there. I get it. I know you've got a family all could. Yeah. For me. Yeah. Other kepi so fortunate. Okay. Okay. I hear you. All right. Lastly, the foldable phone hype is real Samsung is poised to release its foldable phones sometime this year are on just Cadeau court says though that the rumored galaxy eth- name as a real game a stupid name for flexible and foldable. All right. And you also said hype. So I'm going to press the button. All right. Well, read more about commentary. She talks about the different options that are out there. There's a galaxy of course. But then I don't know if they wanna copy, I no way, I don't think. So we'll see for full coverage because I've seen that chain. Ben, FOX, Ruben listening.

Hog deaths, manure flooding from Florence seen surpassing 2016 hurricane
"Of turkeys and chickens are dad. Thousands of hogs have perished as flood waters continue to rise in North Carolina. The human death toll from the hurricane stands at thirty seven this morning. "Bellwether for you guys so I wanted to start with something local earlier today London's Mayor Econ was addressing a conference he was forced to suspend his speech because of protesters by a group with American flag shouting support for trump and brexit and manding the arrest of mayor con reportedly reverend his religion and saying power had gone to his head after security escorted the protesters arcand resumed his speech by remarking on the protesters as a set of very stable geniuses which I thought was solid so it seems as though you guys have a problem of unable to prevent the importation of American extremism radical Americans have you heard of this group chased that was protesting this group the white and dragons away don't you think so it makes you think something's going on right it's not good yeah but the interesting thing is as they arrived to trying to a citizen arrest he just carried on reading his newspaper the mayor was like whatever so just reading the newspaper I was really cool doing on the tube when there's another trying to get your attention uh-huh reading the newspaper they Stephen Apparently the audience Roger Show there level with a slow clap is not a sarcastic clap made it over here is that something that's how people deal with racism vice very feisty this is what happens if you encourage audience participation the show's going to be four hours low it'd be like I don't care well I'm having a blast I think white pendragon where a seventy s folk group they didn't sell any records about really upset so you recently sat on a panel with Piers Morgan yes we're some of the issues associated with immigration and racism and how it's playing in British politics came up do you think that with brexit with what's happening with trump you that there is an element that is becoming more powerful as you think it's becoming more public now are you worried that it's going to continue to be rising force here and back in the US it's definitely it seems to have legitimized of hate groups in this country but it seems to the Brexit vote the problem is if you say in this country that Brexit has anything to do with racism everyone's no it doesn't shop brown boy you're right well it feels like you're kind of stepping on you're on point to me you came from go back to go back to where you came from there's no racist like yeah so it just feel like it's one feeds off the other I mean we would obviously like to thank you guys because the fact that you voted in trump has really let us the hook globally like it shows a real commitment to the special relationship that you saw saw US commit geopolitical suicide and not on your own little buddy just the Selmer Louisa get off the edge of the precipice it's very true if if we hadn't done what we had done buddy focused on how you guys screwed up we all wow yeah wake up call brexit but then we just hit snooze the I mean in the US we don't we're not watching BBC it comes up Brexit we forgot learn nothing from it made the same mistake much worse when I started my career in the BBC sees very much obsessed with balance so every opposing view has to be given an can make it a rather stale broadcasting outfit and Therefore I feel I should offer that here tonight I think brexit's going great three bul you like but you know I mean you voted for it someone voted for it I voted for it my dad day definitely I don't know why my dad was so annoying talk about Europe we take back power dont you've got no power you've never had power you're a plumber from Bristol it's not a problem don't worry the best team when we got double D Davis Visit Braxton Secretaries guy called David Davis who ran for leadership of the conserved in two thousand and five and for his campaign he had tee shirts printed for women to wear which said it's double d for me over the boobs and he is now in charge of our entire country's future say best known for the he's got the combination of humor and sexiness the what we're looking for Shea stone what a mess what a massive mess right he's going to clean this up I blame I blame you Brexit Brexit love you should've had the conversations we had an agreement British empire the continuation of some real settled Hawaii to make the team how the audience for the audience at home aw nearish they high five over the fall of colonialism I did not participate in it but I would have liked to have been offered the chance because honestly we help come on in my job has of the British Empire sure we made some mistakes but you know you everyone loves cricket you'RE WELCOME critic cricketer Stephen it doesn't matter so as you have been with this debate over racism and Brexit and apparently some sort of a eugenics conference what the fuck why is it GonNa take once there has been a similar debate brewing in the US after reaching a by in agreement on immigration this week a group of senators met with Donald Trump in the hopes of getting him to sign off on a deal to avoid possible shutdown of government while also helping the eight hundred when young people who came to the US undocumented children to stay in the only home they've ever known Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin began explaining a part of the Jose that offers to end of visa visa lottery and replace it with more people getting temporary protected status people that come from places that have civil wars or natural disasters and they come and they relocate to the US Durban being an going through a list of countries that would be covered when he got to Haiti trump said why are we having all these people will from shithole countries come here later the White House clarified these that he wasn't talking about Haiti he was talking about Africa can I just say here as the voice of Balance Bandy words around like racists we must have donald trump but I'll recall I would like to remind you of that conference speech he gave in September two I think the UN we'll have African leaders were there and he talked very fondly about FAVOR African countries which is a country I've never heard of does not make me the racist because I've never heard of it I mean he's a fan have you ever heard of none Joan John gotta check my privilege never heard of Nambia what's the fake one Mambia Nambi not real we we without a visa and statistically all of those people pay more into the country than they take out because they're younger and barricaded and often healthier and so it's the same sort of exactly the same sort of debate but the thing that really surprised me about the coverage of this is how reluctant the American media is to call him a racist that's the problem because you have an opinion but racist.
