They were scheduled place Cincinnati and they covert 19 hits. We haven't been back there since 1979. And that's this day in music before we leave, Guys, we've got a surprise Carl Schmitt from the Louisville Sports Commission as a story about that concert, Smith All right, Carl, what's going on, Buddy? Hey, guys, So this is my personal story. So I think it was four years prior to that It was either four or five. Prior to that. The who played in the same arena the same place. Same type of scenario. How is in my concert running days in that time? So a bunch of football players I played with him or Ed? We all go to the concert. Same thing. We're out there on that plaza outside those doors, right? Yeah. I mean, it is like sardines. You're packed in there. Some people come to the doors and just like you were talking about the light. The swaying starts on the swing start. There's a young woman that was stand next all of our group, and she just starts sliding down toward the ground like she's getting sucked down to the ground by the crowd. One of my buddies big fight in had big meat hook hands. Grab her by the back of the neck. Hold her up. Right? A while later. They come and they opened two doors. 22 must be there Must be 50 doors opened two doors. Oh, little seating, just like this. When they open those two doors. People start going and look, I was a big guy back in those days, you know, football player where? Yeah, Whatever. I got shot through the door shot through the door like launch through that those two doors, you know, give somebody your ticket didn't matter. Just like Wow. Now, fast forward the 79. I'm teaching school. I'm at home. I'm laying on the floor and watching TV and the news comes on about that concert, and it just was like Oh, my God. That could have happened five years, four years, So they knew this could happen and didn't change the way they did concerts. It was festival season the whole thing with restless eating Woz. Get there early. Get in first, and you can sit up front. It's called the genius. The genius nous of lack of it was that if you just open to so one calls a rush, like people wouldn't rush the stage. If we open all the doors. Everyone's just gonna run like you see when the new Jordans come out, but that obviously is not the right way to do it. And that's crazy. That's crazy. Thanks. Thanks, girl. We're up against the break. I appreciate it, buddy. Uh,.

"First Green Bay Packers Super Bowl team was a Louisville legend who we lost to this morning. I wanted to talk to Carl Schmitt. Carl is a longtime friend of Paul Horn, ing's and one of this sort of get Paul get Carl to share some memories of Paul. But before we talk to Carl, let me talk to you for for folks who say you know how good of a player was this guy? I don't know. Maybe I'm a little too young to remember. Well, I'm too young to remember his playing days. But I can tell you that pole horning was was a letter that all three sports at flash a high school in the fifties. Went to Notre Dame one of high spin trophy there and this was a year by the way when the team went to an eight so he must have been in pretty impressive, impressive player also played basketball for the Fighting Irish for Awhile. First pick in the NFL draft in 1957 went to four conference championships was an NFL M V P I went to a couple of Pro Bowls was on that 1966 1st Super Bowl championship team. The guy was a very impressive impact player in the NFL. And Carl Schmitt joins us today, Carl, I know you did a lot of work with with Paul and with the Louisville Sports Commission and the Paul Horning Award and many other things that you guys had gone, But no. Paul was also a longtime friend of yours. And as we sort of looked back on Poles, life and his career, I wonder if you could just kind of give me some give me some recollections of some thoughts that you have about your friend. Hey, Joe. Thank you is the first thing I'll say is, um, it's a fabulous thing when you can spend the day celebrating someone's life as opposed to, you know, sort of being done and dumps about it. I mean, we're all Sorry that Paul's gone, but he has had a great life and there's been just Well was just coming in from all over the country, people in sports and outside sports. I think the two things that I would like people to remember about Paul. Besides What a great football part was, is He was a very generous person he ever went out with him anywhere. He tipped incredibly well, he You know a lot of guys from his era Joe that played they didn't make a whole lot of money ended up destitute. They didn't invest their money. What wisely? They didn't. I've said in his office one more than a dozen occasions and watched him Write a check. Put it in them will open Senate tag as he played with just, you know, for the guy could have some coins in his pocket. Big support of the sister visitor center down in the West and made a big contribution made a nice contributions to do indoor track building. It's being built in the West, and he He was a good, generous man whom he also was a little billion currency. She loved Louisville. He always lived in Louisville. Louisville was his hometown. He wanted everybody to know that In fact, when we came to him the idea crazy Paul Horne Award Which is given for the most versatile player in major college football is kind of what would Paul personified? He didn't know I've had people come to me many times before about the war. But since it's skin Lloyd moments with the Sports Commission all I'll always be in mobile. Let's go do it. So yeah, he's he was a little billion, and he loved this city. You know, it's interesting because I only had a chance to talk to him a few times. We did a few interviews, but the two things that struck me about pole horny was one like you said he was absolutely lutely Louisville guide He would celebrate Louisville. It was his home, and he was happy to let anybody know it. But the other thing is and you know this is true, Carl. There are some guys who kind of turn it on. When the cameras were. The microphones are on. Turn it off when the cameras and the microphones are off. They kind of have a public and a private persona. I didn't see that with Paul Horny. He was very real. He was genuine. He would He loved life. He had a zest for it. I mean, this is not a guy who set in the library for eight hours of the time he went out. He went out and lived his life. I mean, he lived it with gusto, and I think that's the thing. He was the same guy to me. He was nice to the people who You know the important people, but it was also he was very nice to the little guy. I was just very impressed by that. Yeah, he was always on. It was the same Paul whether the cameras were on her off and just listen to the CBS report cover of the radio report coming into this on sports. On the news just to set the record straight. He had a neck injury that year, and in fact, he called like to tell the story that The Packers had the game won and toward the end game and Lombardi King couldn't said they want you want to go in for a couple plays. Them and Horning said No, he said Later, I said, I thought it would be a better a better trivia question. If the answer was that didn't play. Really not like one of us. Well, it was Those three NFL championships that they wanted six Well, there's no question about that, and he, you know, it's It's really unfortunate. I don't know how things might have been different today. But that nerve injury really sort of effectively ended his career because he he then went to New Orleans next year had to retire in preseason, couldn't play and really was not able to play very much in that final 66 seasons. So it was just one of those things. But he had a He had just had great memories. You know, to get him to tell a few Vince Lombardi Packer stories was was just a lot of fun. He was one of those. Like I said he was one of those guys who had a real Real zest for life. Tell me a little bit about the Paul Horning award here for just a moment. Tell me about that, and that's been something that's been a just a really big part of the football landscape in this town. It has so little over 10 years ago about 12. Years ago, we approached Paul with the idea of creating a college football award in his name. We had three objectives in mind. One was we wanted to promote and help extend his legacy for the For the new generations. We wanted to reward college football players who were doing things special. Is the way Paul did and weren't didn't recognize because it wasn't an awards. Specifically for versatility, and we're also self serving Lee. Can help elevate the profile. The Sports Commission and boy So did we find the right spot? I mean, we had You know Christian McCaffrey that lined up in every position in the backfield for Stanford and the return punching picks. We had Jabrill peppers and played 12 different positions on offense, Defense and special teams for A new universe in Michigan. We had Odell Beckham Jr that was amazing..

"Same technology. I tell you, they say any port in a storm and these I I haven't seen. I haven't seen any of the games. What they look like the graphics in 15 years, but 15 years ago, they looked pretty freaking really know the people look, really, I'm sure it's like a movie's got to be even more realistic now, So my point is, if NFL did cancel I think it might be good for each team to adopt. Let the coaching staff tell one of these kids. They call it a 65 toss power trip on this. Just go ahead and play out the season where someone representing someone represents the Giants gamble on it. It would actually look pretty realistic. That's crazy. Well, actually in the lists in India are a couple steps ahead. It is already doing that they have seen and they're playing their games. Well professionals. That our professional teams that are sponsored by an MBA that have playing in NBA two K, and there's a professional game, okay, They have elite form of their housing, and they were paying him but they're training them. You know, there's there's a lot of that. That is that is already going on. Yeah, No. I saw another Carl. I saw I saw where one of the top gamers makes. I don't know how much money because he's got sponsors. And he had the story was he bro? Uh, he broke up with a with a supermodel because he was tired of and he was like a nerdy looking dude, and he broke up with a supermodel because he was bored over and it's It's kind of funny. But what of those events look like when you said you were bringing one to town? What does that look like? For if you are, let's let's say Kobe is over. And you're gonna bring another Eastport to Louisville College Schmidt with Louisville Sports Commission. How does that? What does that event look like? Of a large studio with a live audience and players sitting up on stage, and the game that's being played, is actually being broadcast to the audience. It's behind the players. The players can't see the screen. They can't see what's going on with their opponents and you're sitting, you're sitting in the stands and you're looking at the game of playing and you're looking at the screen behind them. I'm watching the game being played in real time. And you know there you have beautiful sports. We call broadcasters in Eastport, calm shall casters. You know you have broadcast we have played by playing the colored guy, Tony, you know, I just looked at him and just resemble sports. Wow, you're in for it, And you know the game. You're just a game. It's just like it's just like three people watching a football game with very, very high levels of knowledge of football, right. Somebody watches, eh? Part of sweet and they know they're going are picked out on the end of the in the corner back, block down on whatever sum I hope may watch and go. Oh, I gotta write that one is all they know, right? So So, yeah, very levels of sophistication. I went to a big sports company. Put on by our industry. It's troubling that your wife was with me. Today at the sports presentation and social functions, and we're in this big room with big cocktails, such room and they started playing game We're launching and my life was was a huge fan. Competitive swimmer too much on that because anybody baseball you names and said they were watching the sports competition and I'm telling you, it was less than five minutes. It could have been two minutes. How long you didn't get it? I think it's mostly because I didn't really understand what's actually going on. On screen, So I think there's one for yourself the two most popular book as channels. So if you guys wanna watch the sport to play you go one is called Twitch. Twitch twitch twitch, and the other one is YouTube. The sports channel to those pants. They combined to a larger audiences and ESPN. HBO. Come on. Yeah, yeah, no, I mean, it is. It is incredible. The numbers that date that thes e sports are are garnering and you were smart has a Little sports commission to try to get one of those events here. And at some point you never know. You know, they might turning Louisville Gardens into any sports place or something. You got to figure some out for that facility. But that's not what's all that's going on, Carl. Of course, you've got the Bourbon half marathon. The urban bourbon. Is it still going on? What's going on with that? Yes. So what? We have decided that sports commission that we're going to put on any event that stable thanks. Even if we don't make money on it when we're not gonna lose money on them normally see on an operating seven events cast that we put back right by thinking of sports Commission help us bring more best count. You just said you know what people want to do stuff. So we moved our open both and half marathon that couldn't afford the closed city streets because we had to limit the number of Participants. So we moved into our claim self contained in the park lands. It's on our shoulders. Uh, 17. We want to sign up. You can go toe in bourbon half dot com. Line up and run in person isn't a virtual event way only operate largest college cross country meet in America. We're trying to figure out how we can put that of them form and at least break even because there's some schools that are doing cross country they're a bunch of kids. Even though their programs are doing they could come and run attached. And and also there's a high school. In middle school division, So we're working hard to sell your state part. We're working hard to figure out how to put that one on and we also have an event that we are called the game. And we like to call it a field day for adults. Where it's like adults coming out and doing a big field day. We have usually a 15 events state approved of the 13 event. We had to give it a three on three basketball and volleyball, but we're doing The whole point of games. You like this game, we created one called Field Long Poem, Team one. We're gonna do a proper game. State park he has is interesting. Tony. When you talk to some companies like Well, we can't do it because of this. Something cos like, Bring it on. Our employees are dying to get out of the stuff. I want to go to the social distancing over there. There were now you can get a safety plan. We're good, so We are doing as many events they cost can and I think people appreciate just some type of bomb thing being a little bit of flights of normalcy in my life. Well, we're running short on time, but.

"The knobs, Ian and Terrier also here coming up, We'll talk with Carl Schmitt from Louisville Sports Commission. Today's the first day of the watch list with a whole Morning award. But the question is, Ian, Are we going to have football this fall? I've said it for months. I still think the NFL we will see But I don't. I don't know about college football. Definitely not. I think the fall is very questionable. Now. That doesn't mean it can't move to a spring schedule. I know some leagues were talking about that. Jodie Jodie earlier in the Sportscast talked about high school sports in Alabama for wanting named several states. But Alabama and they said, We're going forward and we're going to do this. We're going to do that. And, of course, it's Alabama, where their rabbit about football, But here's the thing. If the S E C ways in and says, Well, we're not going to play until next. Whatever. Then the dominoes fall once roll tide has to put a halt of things. All those other chips just go by the wayside. I think if any of the power five leagues Yeah, say that, then those are the dominos that fall because Obviously, the Ivy League has already said, You know, we're not doing fall sports. Well, that that makes a nice little ripple for the smaller leagues. But that doesn't do anything to the big boys. Once. One of those five conferences says We're moving to spring, you can go ahead and write it down. They're all moving to spring, right, because, like you watched the Harvard Yale game, and the guy goes out for a pass, and he's holding a chemistry book and doing his homework while he's fair, rainy place in a little extra reach the book You're not even trying. Come on. You're studying. But there's pressure extra pressure on them from their families. You know, as faras sports, the sports landscape in college goes the Ivy League. It sounds harsh, but doesn't matter. There's no dollars generated there, Which is what drives the bus. They don't even have academic aura, athletic scholarships. It's all those kids are going there out in, you know. For phone more than anything to be a There. There the the definition of student athletes. You know what the power five that might be a different animal, and there's so much money tied into that. No, we can't. It's if that's what's going to make the decision. That's a huge American corporation. College football. Oh, yeah. Never, ever lose sight of that, and one that really can't function. Without fans in the stains. It's it's unlike the NFL wher the NFL's TV deal. It's so big They don't need a single person to be in the stadium. They can still make payroll. Haley, What do you think about this? Adding the fake crowd noise like I watch the baseball game. The other night guy gets a hit near the You know, they're just adding it in. I find it. I find it hilarious because we watched the premiere league recently and they're doing the same thing. You can either watch a silent version or some guy just going all they score to go put up the cheers like I don't I don't know how they do it, but I find it fascinating. I love the ambiance noise. Don't you think the man or woman or the combination of multiple people sitting at various computer screens? You know there's pressure there because If you're playing, Let's say you're the Washington Nationals. You're playing the Yankees in Washington, and Ah Yankee Guy gets a hit and you pushed the wrong key and crackles Wheeler nuts here. No one's supposed to be a groans because the other the visiting team got a hit. First. It can't be that hard. I'm looking at my set up right now. And I bet both you and I, if we both took a shift could do that. What's like all right, Think of AH, person who's playing the organ in church. They have all those keys in front of them. There's a lot I read something today that they have. They took the sounds off of video game like Ml bees, Whatever it is place, little game and whatever that's where the sound comes from, and it's on 156 different well, that's a lot of different things to punch up. Boy. Yeah, No, thank you. And then what are your Q lines? Right underneath the little button? You press Is it like fan number 16 scream like, how do you do that? All right. I know it's because there are various levels of of success. You know, somebody hits a Grand Slam. It requires the proper roar or the problem grown if it's the visiting team. I don't know. I think it's so fascinating. I would love that job sign me would know and make me nervous. That's instantaneous, and it's not like there's some delay. That's just you got to do it. Coming from the guy that talks on the radio every day. Well, you know, and that that's that's no. That's pressure, though. I mean, because then you're watching is like your own final Your pilot on final approach. For maybe four hours, 3.5 hours. Yeah, Yeah, playing tonight and we're opening Major league baseball. Where in D C Right. There was yes. Yeah, it's Yankees and nationals. And then for 10 o'clock we're headed out to the West Coast. I'm not 100%. I think the Dodgers air the home team's It'll be. Giants Dodgers. And then the full slate gets active tomorrow. What are we doing? Just like a two month run of this 60 games. 60 games. So, Yeah, you're three months. Yeah, well, probably not quite three months. You'll get a day off a week, and I got to spread it out a little bit. Yeah, your century six, possibly seven day you know, seven games in a week, so 10 weeks at most, and one of one of the nationals was tested positive today. And so that did not affect the other players, Someway somehow through contract. That's what they say. I mean, it's going to affect the nationals on the field. I mean, Wanda Soto or Juan Soto's a huge part of their team. Young outfielder very talented, made a huge name for himself last year, so it's going to affect him on the field. But They said he didn't come into contact with anyone else. I have a hard time believing that Yeah, I mean, how does he walk through the clubhouse and not come in contact with anyone else? I don't know. One like him is the ostracised for some reason. That dude's got bad breath, you know, staying away, so but yeah. What? What did Jodi say? He's going to be in quarantine for a few days, so he doesn't have to do the two weeks. I don't know. I don't know what the MLB protocol is, I'm sure they'll You know, test him daily. And as soon as we get a couple of negative tests in a row, he'll be back in the dugout. Oh, yeah. Hoping so. All right. And then later this hour Gerry Burbank, the legendary radio personalities going to join us at 6 35 tonight's talk about Johnny Randolph, who just passed away. Johnny Randolph, the program director. Of wacky when wacky, just kind of blew it open was a national leader in terms of the way they handled their programming. And they're all the funny the zany radio personalities and he was just one of those guys that just he understood. How to manage Mavericks. You know, he had a lot of really talented people, and he just kind of let him just go. And that's pretty cool. And Gary Burbank's one of the best radio personalities In the last 50 years. "Maybe, but then they kind of fan out, so we're trying to figure out what we think. We believe feasible. Do during the fall. Yep. Um Are you taking your Taking your cues from the governor. Or they're from an event standpoint, it comes out the governor's office. Now the mayor has pretty much said Not totally. But here. It's pretty much that if the governor Okay, something we're good at that in our world in the event world, So yeah, we've got We have. Our plans have been limited to government for our Cross country. Our college costs the need for half marathon corporate games. Uh, BMX big BMX event that takes place every year out of state. Part of icing was supposed to be Labor Day weekend, but they had to move it because that's now what Kentucky Derby weekend. That's right way have BMX event for mid October. So we're waiting for approval on all those plans and you know, it is one thing. I think it is universally to somebody tells you they know exactly what's going to be going on. A week a month, six months and now they're just making it up because a nobody, you know, And that's not just true sports world So on outboard we have a lot of, you know, captains of industry from our community on the board. And they tell us when I'm Apologizing to them because the planet showing Children today is different in the plan, and I'm showing Sheldon last week. They're telling me your business, no different. The knowledge that You were in place three days ago. You know, those rules have been changed. So you all just trying to just go and doing the best we could do, and You know, it's not easy, but like really like that, Tom Hanks Video I saw. I guess he's got a movie coming out on a World War movie, and he was Look at a lot of the things that make the sacrifices in problem that Americans made war tune and there was a thing do your part. You do your part. Now a lot of men went over and And fought in the war. A lot of women one in the military, but even civilians that do their part It was rationing there was lived on the coast. Yes. Turn your lights out. You know he had information. We weren't supposed to share think ships. So that's what I would say Everybody do your part. And in Kentucky, I think people have done a better job. And doing our part on dwindled in better shape than other states. But, yeah, it's constantly changing, and we're just trying to keep up with it. We've got a great team and, you know, sometimes it's a little bit. Uh Disappointed and so confusing, but Forging ahead, right, Karl. I could have said it better. You said some some parameters and rules, and three days later, it changes Ah and then and we've always at different times. And as Americans have been asked to do your part, and that's exactly right. I could not set a better way. Karl Schmidt with Louisville Sports Commission. It's always great to talk to. "Hi. This is Pollyanna Mackintosh from the walking dead. You're listening to Tony and doing All right. We're rolling right along on a Friday and I haven't had this guy on in awhile. Cove. It kind of put it. Arul, right? There are heart with some Louisville Sports Commission events. Karl Schmidt. How are you, sir? I'm doing good, Tony. You know, he said, Sports can hit the wall here with covert 19 but we're chipping away making progress trying to do the right thing. My first question is at some point. Before you leave the Louisville Sports Commission. Will you grow that Fu Manchu mustache back the one you had in 1972 when you played for more head. A za middle linebacker. You know, as we grow and mature, Tony, are The last time I'm not trying to do that bad then. But then I had a 17 its neck, which kind of complimented that treatment to Thank God It's Shaq just under 15.5 on my neck situation with Ah, different world. All right. I want to. I want to take an offshoot here before we get to Louisville Sports Commission. The defense's You called, I guess it like you play little about outside linebacker, middle linebacker. Would you play it more head? Ah, quick sideline along market. All right. How many defence is in that? What was it? 1970. Mid 70. Okay, We're playing for three. Okay for three. Right? And then you ran almost everything out of the 43 How many? How many different defensive calls you had at that time compared to you think they have today? No. You know, it's a lot. I mean, we had a lot you know, didn't have more today. Then they did. Then I think so. Because you know you start up with your base defense, then you now they're doing a whole lot more nickel and dime package stuff, you know, right? Quarterback with two quarterbacks, and maybe three linebackers get a little bit more creative with will stand more guys up, so there's a lot more creativity going on. Yeah, it's probably more sophisticated was back. He played. I think people just they just studied each other a lot harder than we did there more to study as well, Right? Do you think You think you're Were you a speedy linebacker? Could you cover the West Coast offense, like some of the linebackers do now? I was totally speed linebacker. I think Learning the words speed in with anyone the last name Schmidt in mind, My our clan would be misleading. I have some quitting. OK? I was caught in a four a five a little by little birth and I didn't have a Couple coaches tell me one time I had what they called spirit. Quickly. What is that? Well, that means I was gonna keep coming at you coming at you coming coming. Knocked me halfway down. I'm gonna get back up quicker than the next guy and and that's great, but clearly not my assets were limited. I got it. I got it. But not for my nine. I love it. I love it, Carl. It's always a great I love talking old football with you, man. Okay, so little Sports Commission What was in the pipeline that we lost it? And is there anything that we know that we can get back to? Ah, here any time soon, Where we at currently with the Louisville Sports Commission, So the things that we lost you go back in the spring, and then we're delayed into the summer. We lost a big girls travel volleyball now. We lost. Ah, huge, big, huge girls and boys but larger component of girls travel basketball, then We lost us a fencing Summer national championships. So those were the big three that were on the circuit that while just just were problematic for a couple of reasons, Number one Two sports, volleyball and basketball They call contact sports all the valuable lot left in basketball fencing has a little bit of contact to it. Interesting side note defended that ultimately made the USA scenting go away for this to the national championship. Which means you've gotta have officiating at the highest level. Right. Initiating incensing is scoring and referees and guess what. Tell me most of the referee. Mostly officials look like me. They're my age, right? They told you something. You're not comfortable travelling now. They had to make that decision in June for something was going on in August. Yeah, so they really Campell. They're only that because they couldn't get enough quality. You never know what's going to Be one thing or the things that may impact, but you can actually haven't been or not. We're talking with the Louisville Sports Commission. Carl, if it does, you're thinking change. We're assuming we're going to get some sort of vaccine in the next six months or so right. So they're talking about well 6 to 6 to one year or whatever. What? Where's your thinking That should we go after sports that we know we probably can get away with in a covert world or do we sort of just Move on with the same same events and just wait for the vaccine. Well, we're doing the number of things. The first thing we're doing this we're having over communicating with our client. In what we call our course sports and those basketball volleyball. Ruffling running events like cross country and we're just in and cycling events and we are over, communicated with those clients loving them know what we're doing, how hard we're working on it, which they appreciate very much, so we believe that But someday you know that they will come when one science will figure this out and we'll be back to. So I think you have to believe that science is going is going to have to believe that someday we're going to be able to play basketball. You know that number one heard you talk about the other day that there's one sport really bad actor with his wrestling? Yes thing, but it's only the two people that are Better bothering each other, right? It's not like you're bothering her by in the stands and crowd, So if the athletes are healthy, you know the athlete to help even You ought to be able to do those sports but now well, we have to continue to, um, conduct out this with the belief that the medical medical science will figure itself. There will be days when we'll be able to open back up now keep chipping away In the short term. We're trying to figure things out like baseball. There already started. Do You know, baseball. We're looking across country. On a cross country is pretty close together when they start like for the 1st 6 800 meters of the race..

The final score ended up being the patriots forty-three and the chiefs of forty last night on Sunday night football ratings are through the roof for the NFL when you get scores like forty three to forty with two of the best teams in the NFL going at it stars are everywhere. A lot of people were saying, you know, this is the patriots handing off to the chief. So the next generation it is. Ratings are huge. They got past the kneeling thing pretty darn quickly. And they are moving on up ten to twelve percent for the NFL so far this year. So people are watching the games. There's no doubt about it. When you have a game like that last night. How do you not? Yes. What you do? Everyone knew that was going to happen yesterday rights who. Yes, it's the Bengals year. We're going to get the Steelers. Oh, no, no, no, no, Big, Ben left. I left ABC wide open across the middle at the end. You don't want that is that should be called that defense should be called the Bengals. When you leave the best player in the NFL wide. Open up the seem to score the winning touchdown with a couple of seconds left bell. That's the Bengals defense run. The bingo Lanham they'll never slow from them. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
