"Are you able to pull that off though and still maintain sort of like the surprise of daniel's return and then the surprise with his swift exit i don't know but it is. It is definitely something that would would have been nice to see. Could it be something where we see him in ann arbor. He over hears or is brought in on the swan station. And that's when things click in his mind right because that seems to be the mo is like he comes in and says oh. Yeah the swan station. He researches everything he knows about it and basically says this is what this is what it hinges upon. Maybe it's something as small as that. But i think it's something you could feasibly throw into the variable. You don't need to put it into some like it hot to blow the surprise of him getting off the sub- but considering how much we served ordered through daniel's life in the variable anyway i i think you could throw something in there. If you had the time. Yeah i wonder. Was it a mistake to send daniel off the island. Like he's i have staged should he have stayed. I personally agree. I think looking back on it. It still is really strange to me. Just the think one of the stranger things of this season is how some of these characters take a back seat. I've talked about before about how even watching him back. I'm still not a huge fan of the desmond stuff. Sorry riley and five just because it is so spotty. He appears in four episodes. Daniel faraday appears in less episodes of that mentioned before then fail and ribs. Cincinnati which sounds really really strange. I mean i guess then you have to like how does he fit into everything else going on. But i do feel like there. There could have been aside plot. Maybe they've written in where he was brought in on the swan project alongside renson skin. Look on wanna see anymore. Ribs ski on my screen. But maybe that's more of an access point to see the epiphany from daniel faraday rather than him showing up. You do lose the surprise of like. Oh daniel faraday is back. He's here to stay. He's not here to stay. But i don't know i'll admit from the stuff onwards i kind of missed. Having him on the island a bunch of people had asked eric dive stein included as well as megan. Cullen y daniel faraday doesn't have the same last name as either of his parents l. Louise hawking or charles whitmore that like she always just want wanna tell daniel about about charles whitmore and I guess you wouldn't just come up with a name. She's got the journal his name. Is daniel faraday. Because it's always daniel faraday right be stuff. Was that the first indicator..

"Swimming sequence right like this is there. There's a lake that they're next to and basically elevates like well. You have to swim underneath the lake. Which is what kate. Nope out of before rights like. I'm not doing this jack. Understand translated is just like thanks for for you know shooting that guy before. You don't need to come. you don't want you. I totally understand this is a cockamamie proposition. But i'm going to be swimming forward. And so richard. And jack are going to swim forward to this beautiful piece of set decoration. We continue on the temple theme here as we get to explore the tunnels some nice richard sass here to riber checks. Like how are we gonna get the bomb alan. Richard's like obviously we're not gonna take the bomb underwater doctor. We have other ways. Don't worry sade has an incredible line. Here it's so great. That i wanted to have it on here as sound. If you want to give it a rip you might just see if it doesn't at least you put us out of our misery. I see this as an absolute win. Yeah i love that. I think that it's such a great line from saieed and like very in line with character. Just kind of very pragmatic. It's like all right. Either this works. Or instantly incinerate in our well game over and then this is also again from this character. Who again not to say he's suicidal but he's very much like i'm a bad person. I've done a lot of bad things. I'm a killer through. And through. If i died here it's totally cool. Well it's absolutely fine and we'll save that for next episode actually is on debts. Well also though i he still believes in like what he did right like he tried to kill ben by killing ben maybe undo all the misery that happened to to everybody else. And then they saved ben's life so his plan didn't work but he may still believe that like we can change everything by eliminating component of the past like. Don't you dare tell me that. I don't have free will here. Don't you dare tell me that. I can't like actually change something. Tell me what. I can't i can't neil. Hasn't had the whatever happened. Happened conversation with anybody. He hasn't had a moment to observe that science with daniel faraday or anything like that so saieed who is a guy who believes in what he sees and believes in himself in his abilities certainly believes that he could kill a kid if he asked you if it means changing the future and if he was already willing to do that and blowing up a nuclear bomb is you know not a huge leap but it is it is interesting to get back in this territory right. Having wasn't that like a big piece of what he was doing in the greater good that is like On on this this mission to infiltrate a sleeper cell and potentially a blow up a huge bomb so now he's back in that territory and this time he's not standing down this time he's all the way in right and i think that's also a point of how maybe he learned from that experience to right because that was also you had to like you know he's not he didn't like fall for the mark but if i recall it episode correctly this was an old friend of hayes and he felt about what he was doing to the point. Where omar finds out. I forgot whatever his name was and he kills himself so like perhaps i learned from that experience of like no no no. You don't become the person to stop this operation. You become part of the operation at the end of the day. And so yeah. It looks like team bomb at the moment is richard. Alpert louise hawking jack sheppard and psyche giral which is a good get just in general to have studied on your team because he's a very good very good execute a plan very strong squad All right let's get into the ultimate sound of the episode. It's going to be Fake lock ben. Richard returning to the group. Smokey mix smoker too. Has a few things you'd like to say to. The crowd allow one. My name is john. Locke i've been told that for some time you all have been accepting orders from a man named jacob and yet oddly enough. It seems that no one has actually seen him now. I'm sure there are very good reasons. Why his existence and whereabouts are secret. I just don't know what they are and to be honest with all of you. There's a man telling us what to do. I want to know who he is. This man checa. Can you tell us how to bring and the rest of our people back here. Absolutely richard has agreed to show us where we need to go. So i'm going.

"Drill. But i'm just saying makuuchi stuff's happening above ground and underground nowadays. I feel like i'm and from the news When i watched this this time as like yo sauce cousin for sure because here this guy comes up like this thick brooklyn at the kinski. We got the manifest year. Mr redskins gay. Yeah like just like shows up this actor. Kevin chapman who is probably best known to tv fans of prestige. Like sort of network drama types like lost As lionel few sco on person of interest one was michael emerson. I like that man. Put him on my next show. Maybe it's possible. But i i know that it's still not a show that i've done and maybe someday but i know people adore person of interest and so he had an important role on that show. So this guy is not nobody but he is hilarious. These mitch security official name. We yeah absolutely incredible. Pleaded them saw. It's absolutely paul. The gunmen disguised his name. Like no one would suspect that david relating last name. I'm paul mitch paul. The gunman hit me has just been going around. Well you remember the manifest. It came up. Say well go my hands on it. Again amy goodspeed. She's not around anymore. She flew in airplane away from the island. Because she's definitely amelia. Earhart absolute magic. Here's the manifest. Let's talk about horace here for a second. Because yeah i mean this is this i mean i guess gay is right. Horse does not have the as he doesn't have what it takes in that hortus like basically gets shouted down and just sits there in does nothing in response. Yeah and it's interesting. I guess it shows that maybe in this moment you have people like paul the gunman who are more loyal to rigid inskeep because otherwise you would imagine that like he has them take rds and put them in a holding cell right for just completely acting out a line. Yeah yeah he's like. I don't know i hate phil here. Mike is my my hell of course yeah fills like and he's a weasel my hang up here in this entire scene. 'cause i expect radzinski to be terrible. I expect horace to be. Just like a total bummer. But here comes. Fill this total nerd in the corner being like. I could make them talk. Ages starts beating the crap out of juliet. I hate him. I hate him. I hate him so much. I really do. I think that like so much of our energy is focused on stewards and ski and being awful and it should be focused on that but we split it a little bit because still oh i hate him. Hit him so much. Yeah i mean listen. Bill's going to have his own undoing next episode right and i guess your management various whether he should get that pole through his chest. But yeah right here. It's sort of like no nobody hits are juliette. What do you think you're doing phil. I mean from a tactical perspective. He might be right in waikiki. If not talking if we hit him if we hit someone who's close to maybe that would help but it does not make him that much better of a person. No not at all so they mitch security paul. The gunman shows talking about hurley. And so we cut to hurley. He's like packing a bunch of stuff. He's got this guitar case which we still don't know what's in there. And as he's sneaking off Pierre chang is following close behind. Remember we left dr chang with hearing from daniel faraday that he is miles is father so he tracks early to gin and miles and starts to grill them about peer. The grumman a about like. Are you guys actually from the future or not and he starts asking hurley all these questions. I'm forty six is so you fought in the korean war and hurley going. There's no such thing. This is a really great performance from garcia again. Though his time in season five is very limited especially in the incident like he makes a meal out of what he's been given and i love this. You spoke about this during nama state. That like his worst fears have come true right store until my guarantee nobody's going to ask who the president of the united states says and he does just that hurley. Amelie says all right dude. We're from the so. I just loved that callback day. I think is a really funny closing the loop and just like it's an example. I know it seems small. My favorite thing to do take a small thing. Make it a little bit bigger and i know it's just like a throwaway joke but i think that like it's emblematic of the writing style to season five of how much it just feels like. It's very thoughtful. We're we're we set stuff up and we close it out like i think that's one of the reasons why season five is so effective for me. We talked about. We've talked about how it's incredibly cohesive in fact we're talking about an episode. The next scene the next couple of scenes are going to be going back to the scene. We saw in the premier. But yeah dr chang. Despite being so irascible in the previous two episodes like is actually you know. Starting to pick up with daniel faraday was putting down right. He followed hurley to be like. Oh okay you actually are from the future. And i think part of this comes from obviously the very first team we saw and we saw again in the variable of him unlocking into the orchid talking about time travel. I think this is the concept. That is not completely foreign to him. Well i do agree sawyer in the previous scene that i think if they talk to these security dupes about where and when they're from they're not gonna be on board with it but someone like dr. Chang is totally ready to drink the kool aid in that regard and i will say that you know again talking about closing the loop miles finally guests to like talk with his father after his father has realized who he is and his big moment. I think will come later when they're watching through the bushes but like if you watch this episode for anything character wise. Watch it for miles. It's again it's a. It's a little closing of this. Mini arc that we got over the past few episodes and even through this episode because miles wants to strike out on his own. He wants to start over. And he's like screw sawyer and juliet every man for himself very proto sawyer. But now he's going to have a little bit of his own sawyer warming movement when he realizes that The dad he's being you know having such a bad opinion of all these years it's not that bad of a guy yeah. I just loved that when pierre looks at miles. Because you're my son they're kind of like it's like a happy moment and like they don't really dwell on it they don't have like the huge hug or anything like that but it is like this moment. Where pierre chang it's like. I think it's like validation of his life's work and then it's also like wake pride and seeing his son in this moment being so intrinsically tied to his life's work and then also like all right. Well i got to work with my son to make sure that he lives. And that everybody else your lives like i have to get to work myself and i feel like that's what i love about this episode. Is i think both l. louise. Npr chang very much have that attitude. They are both absolutely on board. They're like great. Here's the absolute most wackadoo thing. I've heard in my life dotted digested radio. Move on what what's next and think that's a really fun way for these characters. Get involved again. I know it's necessary given how repulsive the finale is but good look on both of these characters to have these. Massive things appear for both of them to be dealing with their own sons on the island in different ways and for both of them to say okay. Clearly if that's the case then this is something incredibly important that i need to do. A really funny moment here is like all right so your friend the physicist. He told me to evacuate everyone. Should i do that. And pierre says words miles to says look if he said get off the island. I would do it. And there's this whole move like what's hope he knows what he's doing. And then we cut to dead daniel faraday on the grand which is just absolutely incredible with more is there. And he's like i swear. This guy wooksbury familiar. I can't quite place. It is he my when i was a little bit more of like a wine. Short haired a whole. I remember someone who looks very similar to him. Is this my son. And so l. is there. She's going to close. Daniels is and like it's interesting. That like she like you know. She kills her son and immediately changes the chorus of her entire life. But she instantly gets into action. You know what i mean like. She co she copes with what she's done right away like sheila becomes the always talking that we know in this man. I feel like i would imagine that this is the transformative moment right. Like i know we certainly saw some some aggressiveness in jug head and certainly aggressiveness to shoot daniel faraday in the back. No questions asked. But i do think this is a seminal moment in her life ota magin this is certainly what puts her on the path to be like a right. I am the keeper of the sacred time line in that way but something that we should note here is that it seems like what's implied here. Josh is not only did. Elway's hawking kill her son but it seems to imply she killed her son while she was pregnant with said son. Yeah oh god yeah yes so hurry like verdes still here. I don't know like this is so messy it's so messy we also wonder like how much does it have an impact on her character. I didn't mention it before. But i agree with what you've said back in jug had that war-torn middle stage. Louise hawking i think is is really really great and i love the emotion. She hasn't her face when she gets unfortunate. Confirmation from jack about what you know who faraday wise and her experience like. There is genuine emotion on her face like she is clearly very broken up about the idea of killing a future version of her son and the repercussions for actions. And i feel like part of that has to be informed with. Who's in her belly right now. You know there's one thing to be chang and be like here's my baby over here and here's the future version of him. It's another thing for l. Talking to be like. I am raising right now within my own body. Someone who i am going to kill it's got to be such a torturous tempestuous ought and for talking in this moment to be able to plow through it and maybe use these remaining to just sort of like pushed that trauma. Aside in order to serve a larger purpose. Sounds incredibly tragic. Yeah i totally agree richards. Going to tell jack that charles de louise's Love can be complicated. What they say. And we use that to leverage ourselves. Back to the future where. Richard is walking with lock and ben. This sound clip. We listened to you before a bomb and the radzinski where where where where the smoke monster is like telling them where to go. the leader. now. I want you to take me to jacob how it works like yes it does ben shut up yes yes so like. He's just various sort of this. He's not. He's not playing by the rule book. He's he's this. He's he's he's you know breaking down the foundations of how this is done in. So he's like you know. Kind of like bulldozing. His way towards a meeting with jacob and richard buick. That's not how this goes by tradition. And like say what you will about benjamin linus but it would appear. He observed tradition. This is the monster and the monster knows that the tradition at least in his opinion is bullshit because he knows who's behind it. He's been there from the beginning so he's just like yeah. Well dangle that badge me all you want. It's a piece of paper. I'm gonna rip it up you know. He's just like going to go through. So it's very scary like the way that he just like steamrolls. Richard i think is is rather frightening but richard who is supposed to be this guy who holds the line just like also just not holding to line at all right and that's also a big setup for the final season right this idea and we talked about this even with the shape of things to come of like when the boss is defeated. And there's a bigger boss behind it. You know that as a certain other layer of tension to we experienced that. When kimmy kills alex right and ben. Who's the big bad of season. Three's defeated and we certainly get here. And i think it really sets up the destabilization that comes in season six of light up to this point. Richard alpert has been regarded as like the person in the highest position on the island. Benjamin linus has been in the no the most out of any character so far years someone comes in and basically like supplants them both and says get down on your knees. I'm look at me look at me. I'm the captain now. I'm the new man in charge. Were doing this i. It's really writing from that perspective to essentially have him come in under the guise of lock saying nope we're doing things differently now and he's sort of proves his power here by closing this lou right essentially proving like. Don't worry i know what i'm talking about by taking them to. John locke and telling richard everything he needs to know about the conversation there about All right so he's going to go and initiate this conversation. Let's listen into the rest of the scene here. Sound for richard here bleeding to death to get the bullet up. How did you know there was a bullet in my language because you told me there was john's no no no i didn't well you will. This must be quite the out of body experience something like that. Timing was impeccable. John how did you know when to be. You told me you know. John and clearly. It hasn't told you were. Jacob is who you wouldn't need richard show you you've never seen jenkin. Never seen him yet..

"So azad nail meet coffin hammer. Meet nail meet. Coffin will meet j. Jill meets saw saw meet everybody. Everybody meet me. i'm saul. i'm drill man. it's me it saw. No he's not here. Yeah i mean this is is awful. It's awful and you could tell like again. She knows the end goal. Daniel faraday has to go to that island and she has to say whatever she needs to say. And i think from that perspective it is. He's so pitiful in this scene as well like ferreted. I think had indignation in their last seen together here. He's just broken right. He's he's you know even the way he talks about all. I probably wouldn't remember if you told me that you were coming ahead of time. It's so sad brutal and shows again much. Like john locke how coming to the island obviously is not going to end up in good things for him but also like it does it changes his life forever because it does allow him to be happy again if only for a brief portion of time or at least feel whole again but the real gut punch is when he says you know. Would that make you proud of me. movies knows like yeah. I guess i'm gonna have to emotionally hook this guy into signing his own death warrant and there's also the pregnant pause that she takes his well when he asked you really want me to go before she says yes like. You could tell in that moment. There's probably a last minute decision of i could say. No i could say no and see what happens. But i know i can't if he doesn't go to the island. None of this happens. I have to say yes no matter how much i may regret it. We are drawn to certain choices. You know you get to a moment and you think that you were going to say no and you say yes or the other way around like i think that there. I think one of the reasons this show is so resonant in this episode especially so hunting is few many people. Perhaps even most people know that feeling of like i should zig i should say i should say i'm gonna zag if i'm zagging ghadames egg like why exactly why did i- zag. Oh my god. I can't believe they should zig zagged and this is where i live now. I think i think that that is it is it is very evocative of things that we do as human beings in so. I think that bomas played really really really really beautifully. Well in the writing and the acting in the scene. Final scene between l. Louise hawking in her sons this the last time she ever gonna see him. You know her now. That's that's that's what's implied right. That like this is the last meeting. And then faraday signs up to get on the freighter. I think it's really interesting to have this scene after daniel talks little charlotte. I think there's a lot of similarities with this idea of someone like l. Louise someone like adult faraday feeling like there is something i have to push that i don't want to push but i know needs to happen and it's gonna be heart rendering. Would i need it to happen. And i think there's again like mother like son in that regard. I think he ends up doing in one thousand nine hundred seventy seven. What she's gonna do probably like thirty twenty seven years later or what have you to her very son so again it's only about. It's only about going full circle. I also there's this idea of ripples in a pond as well which faraday is going to suggest coming up here in a little bit. And i think the echoes that we see in the way louise is treating this idea of path versus what faraday treats of a path is both dichotomies but also synonymous. Yeah jack is going to be patching up daniel faraday and i love it this come so close to the end of the episode. Yeah the scare right up like oh well. He got shot in the neck. But he's fine. So he's bulletproof. Wow that was close. And i think like in that way like kind of like mirroring some of the feelings around at least i've talked about this. A little bit of what it felt like with with charlie back and season one that they go so close to killing him that they'll never do it. They'll never do it now. Like they went they they could have done it right there. They'll never be able to top it and then hold my dharma. Beer gives us a couple of seasons. And we'll do it so they do the same thing here like we could have shot faraday to death in this moment. We didn't do that so he'll be five minutes later but it doesn't help here. Rival jack says well. I thought you said whatever happened happened. In faraday says basically explains what miles tried to explain to hurley. And whatever happened happened like no. We're still on our time line. We can get hurt. And we can die so again even though he has survived. This bullet wound. He's going to say no. We could still die. Like i might five minutes from now. Yeah so it's you know it's out there like on the on the tip of the tongue of the show you know it's like i may die at the end of the episode. Yeah and we get a lot of. I think point of no return talk in this episode. Which again is interesting considering that. We still have a few episodes left of five. But you really get this just repeating this phrase over and over again of like shows over. Our job is done. There's no turning back of okay. We are moving on from this. And so even though we're still going to be living with these characters i think to your point. This episode serves as a statement from the show of how we are transitioning over the course of few episodes into something completely new or at least knew were for loss for its final season. Yeah all right. So sawyer and juliet back at the house. They're really going through it. Mike here the on their final day in paradise and julius final day anywhere Just a while to think about fair day pointed out this the next episode. And the finale take place over the course of six hours which is wild to think about the again tiny wiliness. But there's a little bit of trouble in paradise here right like sawyer is. I think he's a little unnerved. About what happened. You admits the juliet ended up being right about how things will never be the same since eight one five got back and even the still got my back. Still got my. There's some tension there in big time. I guess that's the read write is like the way they talk to each other. It's not as even not they weren't loving to each other when they talked about it in jug head but like it feels like there was some support there here is sort of like i love you. I love you like when you just say it to your your partner. But you don't really mean it you say just because you have to say that's what this feels like. This feels like james. And juliet's i love you said a bit dispassionately in the moment. Yeah it's gotten it's gotten intense. It's gotten intense. I think it's like a little bit of back to business. You know honeymoon's over so a little bit. You know metaphorical in that regard. I love that her. So hurley and jin are walk. And they've got everything packed they ritz inskeep pulling up. I think jin speaks to korean for the first time since we've seen him in one thousand nine hundred seventy seven which i think is a very small detail that like again. He's put up the guys of being able to speak english and the moment. The jig is up defaults back to korean. They're not to get involved in. This here comes presents in his posse again. We've been infiltrated. He has bellowing like he's furious. That okay the new recruits have helped faraday and then just when leflore tries to like put out another fire. The first fire raging back here.

"Think is a master stroke even though it is so deeply unbelievably awful. It's so so so bleak mike. Yeah i mean not. Only because of the ending there are certainly episodes. Hello to for the road that you know. Have a certain tone to it. And then there's just an absolute gut punch of an ending the punch exist certainly but there are many many blows thrown throughout. I think we got a glimpse of it in confirmed dead but did this point. Daniel faraday has been perceived as just like quirky knowledgeable guy. You know the expert on time travel. This episode truly paints a portrait of daniel faraday as an incredibly tragic character not just the way his life ends but essentially how knowledge of that endpoint from a certain party has allowed his life to be so disastrous. you know it's disastrous in a different way than john locke why think has had a grim fate befall him. But i do to his own foibles as it were. I don't think it's necessary. Well you had to go to the island to do this. So therefore your dad to steal your kidney. No that was more so tragedy that was that was foisted. Upon by the circumstances this is more so tragedy in like the greek variety of here is an outcome and you have the ability to try to change your fate. You visited the oracle adelphi said. You're going to marry your mom and kill your dad. You said hell no but the universe makes it happen in a way. That has a sense of course correcting a path if you will to call me. One of the many louise hawking phrases and to see that daniel faraday as life has been essentially full of suffering that every time. He thinks he's found a bright light. There is something dark and shady obscuring. It just shows that this. This man has earned so much sympathy and importance as well. This is an incredibly important episode for the last part of season five. This is daniel faraday coming giving jack and kate emission and then dying and sort of carrying on with it. Let me read a couple of interesting factoid. I got from las pedia. Josh about how this episode we talked about how some like it hot is the end of an era but apparently the variable is the end of some conventions as well that we're healing conventions left and right we're like l. Louise hawking just shooting conventions app at the sky or we're going to be like certain pandemics killing conventions virtual capacity dammit according to loss pedia. This is the last episode of the series to feature flashbacks interspersed with on island action and focused on only a single character so again this is something that has been ingrained in the dna of the show since the very first episode. And this is the last time we're going to have a solo centric episode with off island flashbacks because after this follow. The leader has no flashbacks. The incident is going to be entirely centered on a bunch of people waiting like turn. Oh i mean. I'd say let's more so like a little bit off-island stuff but mostly concentrated on the island like this feels devoutly within that mold. That loss was created right right and so and so. I think this is the end. In that regard. This is also apparently the last episode in the season and the series to feature events which take place off island in present time which is a big deal right ever since we got the flash forwards introduced at the end of season. Three two thousand seven has always been or two thousand and four to two thousand. Seven has always been a different narrative a narrative that has been present in the dna of lost for the past couple seasons. Now we're done with that. Were bidding farewell to two thousand seven off island after spending a good amount of time with it specifically in season five so we're bidding due to a lot and we were also welcoming in as you mentioned obviously a conceit that does not work in. Hindsight is factually wrong. But i think there is a lot to say about not just what happens in these next few episodes but like you said the core conceit of free will and destiny considering that next season. We're going to get the introduction of a concept of some of you were brought here for a very specific purpose. And i think this is a really fun. Sifi away of setting up a conceit that becomes much more mythical and mystical next season. Yeah i also think. I think there is just there is something that is a very haunting and menacing about this episode and in really toothsome about it. That like daniel faraday. Is you know we were so afraid of the freighters right like we were. We were afraid of like Of what they represented what they would bring the malevolence of of charles whitmore and how that would potentially level the playing field for our characters moving forward and certainly many of them. We were right to fear key me in his posse and the and the havoc that they wreaked on the barracks specifically on there. Were these other characters who not only were not to be feared that were to be trusted and indeed some of them to be loved. And i think that one of the most immediate breakouts if not the most immediate breakout is daniel fair. I think you know. Jeremy davies comes in with really quirky energy as like the like the time travel adult scientists. He's like his brain is fried. He's got all these strange ways that he talks and he got things going on and he has like this vibe about him. he's so singular. You haven't seen anybody like daniel faraday on the show when he shows up and he's he's not dangerous. In fact oftentimes he looked kind of blows up the spot of the medicine. The danger that his collies are trying to uphold. He's the person who at least at the start of this season in this very unsettling unsettling circumstance fared as the guy. Who's trying to keep everybody together. He's trying to like lead the way through science. He knows what's going on. He's qualified to weigh in on this stuff. We should be listening to scientists as a society is something that the people who are left behind on the island certainly are saying ideally elsewhere as well and then to have this guy like go through the trauma of losing someone who he had fallen in love with whether or not like. That story is something that you really care for. We litigated that fairly thoroughly back in the in the season five. But that's such a traumatic thing to happen to him anyway to somebody who you're heartbroken for because the show did a really good job of making you connect with daniel faraday. Jeremy davies as an actor. Did such an excellent job of making you connect with this guy and really feeling at a certain level with this guy that then you kate you take them off the board for awhile you bring him back in. He's got this huge heroic energy still in that very specific way of just like absent mindedly waving a gun around and obviously drawing some attention as a result never change daniel faraday. Never put a weapon in your hand. He's a self proclaimed begin here for a reason. No can i have something for beginners a such underrated line. That like he comes back. And just when you're getting back into the groove with him and you're getting excited about what he's got going on poof. He's gone in a horrible way in this really really cruel. Twist of the knife or bullet as it were Where you find it that he was he was. He's been here. He's been in our lives for this specific moment that this was the thing that turned his entire life was his death. His entire life is dominated by the way that he leaves. This world is such a cruel.

"We've been anticipating for a long time. Mike in the real time if you listen to this episode if you listen to down the hatch and the real time as we release it. The timing is so incredible but the podcast drops on fridays. So it's it's on august thirteenth. But we're just two days shy of that special date eight fifteen in fact the day. We launched down the hatch so happy. Second birthday down the hatch. Yes i'm gonna curtly put a gift on the table like louise hawking. Doesn't that curry restaurant in honor of our second anniversary. How many metronome on my garage band been going. Since we started recording down the hatch. Yeah at least like eight thousand one. Hundred and fifty. I mean more than that. I think a lot more each podcast with the exception of maybe a couple or at least over two hours yeah. There's a lot going on. Maybe more mathematicians. Rip daniel faraday could take care of that time really flies. I remember when we were talking on. Eight fifteen a year ago. We had that big brouhaha of. Hey let's you know a pan ourselves on the back and then some by listening to some kooky cliffs. We did over the years. I just moved into a new place. The world certainly still scary now. But i think it's certainly scary in a different regard and to think about how much has passed and yet like how little feels has passed. I mean since we were talking then what we got through season four and we're almost at the end of season five. I'm trying to recall like i. I'm pretty sure that came around the end of season three if i recall correctly. Yeah that's right. But i think we we're not doing a quick show this year. We're just acknowledging it right now. A lot has happened and nothing has some ways that it's like. I don't really want to revisit ba last year. To be perfectly honest but it is just so wild that we are this deep in right that you know two years ago we started this journey. And we're still going and we've got the whole rest of the year to go at the very least as we have season six on the near horizon but i think much like the survivors of eight one five. Who are about to really be pressed for the rest of the show We're hard at work. mike. We can't miss a beat. We don't have time to stop down and do a bonus show we've got We've got we've got a a not a a hydrogen bomb to detonate. But we got a podcast to make in six hours. This podcast will explode in your feet. We've gone to make it's crunch time now. It's crazy. I it is really really wild to me that we are here though. I know i've said it along the way of like the different like lost projects that i have done along the way that have all just stopped. Just like just like didn't happen all the way the way that it was intended and like knock on wood but here we are like really close to the end of season. Five two years on from starting down the hatch. So i'm really excited about it. I'm in a really really good mood as a pertains to lost even though the timing like tonal whiplash right like this kind of. Is it like a little morose to be in a good mood right now. Mike consumer all very bleak episode of this show. Absolutely not i think there is inherent beauty and enjoyment can come out of bleak things or damon. Lindelof wouldn't have made the leftovers. So i am super excited to talk about the variable and i'm super excited especially i'll talk about this at the end as well but shadow at the top too because you deserve double the shoutouts to the hatchlings out there whether you are just joining us if you're listening in the archives on binge or if you've been catching up on the week to week since this is started it has been to josh's point i think incredibly fulfilling project for both of us you know. I think both of us have done podcasts. That have lasted years but neither of us had done a project where we've recorded every week. Basically on the week for two years straight a hundred plus weeks of loss content. It is wild to me but it has given me somehow even more appreciation for this absolute gem of a show to be able to drill into it time and time again with minimal nosebleeds. Yeah we gotta be careful with the drilling a can can really take you into some terrifying territory. All of the drilling also mentioned so. We're recording this in a bit of time. Crunch as judge said. But i can only imagine. Just the bounty of barracks d'arme darrien or we have received holds work in response to just this calamitous fan favorite character that was introduced on do. I hope we do have a lot of barrick derm dairy and fan. I could see it going either way. I could see going. Yeah there's a lot of baruch durham darrien or there's none. So why don't they one to one way or the other would be my guess but yeah we were recording the variable just a couple of days after we recorded some like it hot so as was the case with some like it hot. We do not have feedback prepared for you for this week of the podcast. We're gonna skip feedback. This time out. We will get to the feedback next week and we'll certainly resume. We'll have it for the instant as well. And then as always we always have that season ender recap special where we go into the feedback. We'll talk about all the things all the points. All of the stuff will look back will do all the feedback that we've missed along the way there. So definitely keep sending that in down the hatch at post show recaps dot com mike before we continue on a take a quick moment to shout out our sponsors for this episode of pusher recaps. The variable that i think is is as i said last time i think it's viewed as an elite episode of the show. It is a real statement piece of like the destiny idea on even if it's like in defiance of destiny in some ways but in other ways it's the fulfillment of destiny and that idea is embodied in so many different characters. But i think for for the character who is so centrally located in the idea of time. Travel that come to dominate lost in this era of the show throughout season. Five four that central figure in that story daniel faraday to really represent in his death and his life. Whatever happened happened. I think is a master stroke even though it is so deeply unbelievably awful. It's so so so bleak mike. Yeah i mean not. Only because of the ending there are certainly episodes. "L. louise hawking. Elliot's talking you sure you're white. You know her. I know her and then he kills them. Yes we need that we have. Let me ask josh. 'cause i i still think that the most evil thing ben linus has ever done is the genocide adding of the dharma initiative. We talked about that during the man behind the curtain. But is this the most malicious thing this is this is. This is trash. Benjamin linus is trash. This is disgusting like this is just so horrible. The whole thing is so such such such a miserable display of humanity a because it really shows that it's just such a such. The rug pulled to end all rug pulled from an emotional perspective not even from a twist perspective because here ben is literally talking. Lock not off the ledge. Because if he steps off the ledge than something happens but essentially telling him like your life matters. I need you know your your life. You being alive is wholly important to me and then two minutes later then kills himself. When it's it's really. He just needs him alive long enough to know like like any valuable information. That's going to get him to where he needs to go next. And so like the second that he says. I'm looking for l. Louise hawking that's enough of a lead that now ben can like milk his sources of l. hawking his here she's somebody who's connected to like getting everybody back to the island i can find her and also by killing. John locke that may be like that. I can keep my eyes open to like see who comes after me like. There's a world in which l. Louise hawking like reaches out to ben or like reaches out because lock is dead and ben is able to pounce via that. You know what i mean like by lock being dead. She's exposed. he finds her things like that It's all a game. It's all ruthless manipulation. This man who's just like tirelessly fiercely devoted to getting back to the island at this point for the really all of the selfish reasons he wants to go back. He wants to be judged either. Kill me and be done with it island or forgive me and i will resume all of the things i was meant to do. It's it's really awful. It's really really awful that this man is in such obvious pain and like this is how he meets. That situation is what he does to lock. It is it is. I think it's the worst thing we ever really see. Been due on the because it's the most hands on thing like we can certainly talk about all the innocent people who died in the dharma initiative. Show julia goodwin's body is still pretty trashes. Well we could also talk about even last week all the innocent people that he doesn't care about killing on a three one six but here. This is like him manipulating a very specific relationship to get what he wants. You know what he's essentially doing. He's milking john locke and then he is. Murdering the cow is what he is. He's essentially saying like all right. Don't kill yourself dow. Because i need to get a couple of facts out of you. And he's do ask a couple questions and you're good so i guess to that point because let's sort of map out ben's logic through this because we certainly got some questions about like if ben once locked dead. Why did he just not let him. Why did just let him kill himself in the first place needs. He needs information from lock. He expects at lock is running around connected to win. What does he know. he doesn't want him. Just die with that information intact. He needs to get the information. Yeah and i also think so to your point. Do you believe that ben approaches. Lock with the intention to kill him all along or do you think that's like oh. Here's all this information. Well no we can't let you get away with that john. You're gonna have to die as it were. yeah. I don't know. I think like i kind of feel. Like he is their world where he keeps him alive and it's better to have him in his pocket for everything. I think that lock has always been so competitive and like every time we've ever seen somebody propose any kind of like direct adversarial challenge to ben's leadership and like you know his like his masculinity right like he has. He has responded to that in harshest of measures. Whether it's this war against whitmore or now killing lock that. I just don't think that like especially after all black lock. Especial lock is special. You are not. There's just no world where he's not just going to kill him but he agrees he's gonna prime him for everything he's got a john locke is going to be more useful as as a prop then he is as a human. He's going to be more useful as wake the veritable beating stick. That ben uses to like surprise somebody and then he like unleashes it and kicks your ass with it like locks death lock as as a martyr is going to be more useful to ben getting the people he needs to get back then keeping him alive we saw how effective he was at getting people to want to go back. It'll be faster this way. And it's probably going to be a little bit more satisfying for ben to some extent to kill this guy who everyone seemed to worship when benn was right here the whole time. Why aren't you worshipping me. I think in ben's mind lock works better as a concept than a person. I think he figures if i kill. John locke spin this narrative. Of and i don't know if he assumes that if he knows that everyone turned him right. I guess he's finding out this moment that a lot got denied by everybody. This can certainly use this as a piece as you were again. Another piece on the board room to be well. Lock is dead but he told me this You know he can certainly manipulate. The death of john locke to use it to his liking. Which again is gonna make makes the ending exciting in theory of like okay if this really is john locke were what are people going to do. When they have the knowledge of what bended considering how much he was able to convince jack in particular of like look with john locke death has done. What does this mean to you. I think that him being able to speak on locks behalf worked so much more from the manipulation perspective. Then like the efforts of actually having to manipulate a person as well. And i agree that i think there is a little bit of like ben thinks of everything as a zero sum. Game as a game of attritional war between two parties. Not only with this him getting one over on lock. Who has bested him in the island. Leader department this is arguably also him getting one over on charles whitmore right now. 'cause i think one of the reasons why ben takes out abidine is because he believes that lock is under his tutelage here. This is wiping another win. More guy off the map. This just happens to be a guy that ben has a very very.

john locke Elliot last week L. louise hawking ben linus Benjamin linus two parties benn josh julia goodwin John locke six charles whitmore Lock second l. Louise three jack first place two minutes

"Has been lying to her. Well i don't know. I imagine she probably take it somewhere at face value. Or maybe things ben is lying. I don't think she really. It matters too much turn. I think i'll always talking. She doesn't know. But i think she can assume i think she's like i know who benjamin linus is. He probably killed. John locke or at least like was a part of this. This guy doesn't commit suicide. Something happened here. But i i'm gonna let him do what he does. Because it's gonna help me sixty two michael. The great brennan fitzpatrick says can we demand that built station and did all the calculations was faraday about the lamposts. I like that yeah. I think that's an interesting idea. So would this be like so. This would have been faraday back in the seventies all these calculations. Yeah i like that thing. That's great. i mean. Listen he's got those three years. So though i wonder does he know about the plus. There's just like he happens to come up with the idea good question. I don't know i mean. He does seem to know so much about the dharma initiative. That's like he knows about the orcades tempest. So yeah it could track that. He knows what the lamppost. And he's built that well though charles win more higher daniel faraday and it seems like charles. Whitmore doesn't know about the lamppost or at least where it's located right right. Yeah interesting. Dana brennan agrees with you. Do you guys one. And you've got one. That's building momentum. Do you guys like the decision to leave it as a mystery now exactly how site and hurley ended up three one. Six fundamentally reshapes. The season part of me thinks that three one six is a stronger episode if it had been two hours and showed how each character got there. I think that's the qualifier. That i'm down with. I think three hundred six becomes stronger. Episode your way impacts the season too severely for me. I think that's that's a that's a great planning. It's like it's a it's is it worth the tradeoff or not and i think it's also interesting in that like this all goes in a row. Maybe if not like three one six would have been interesting either. Like finale or like midseason premiere. Well well you again like some day if we ever get to chronologically lost if we ever find ourselves pulled in that direction i bet that this portion of it is playing out a lot of what you're talking about although no because they're going to be in the seven it's going to be destroyed mcmahon chronologically losses a little hard for me to wrap my head around the become on monday. We'll get to it. Maybe one day jim fells. The aforementioned is a pointing out something that was on the hatch. Podcast friends of the show. Love the hatch jeff. He was recently on a lot of really great interviews and season. Oh you should listen to the hatch. If you're if you're somebody. I want more lost stuff. Definitely check out what the hatch is doing your actual substantial comments here to goof-balls talking about a bunch of got our thing you know. We're feeling our niche in the in the loss. Podcast exactly Just being total morons for like seven hours that is that is our dick eyebrows mantle. I know i Jim the hatch pointed out how the oceanic six are all just fine with crashing. A plane filled with innocent people. And now it's back to being confounding to me of all the ways they could've returned just seems so against the whole that person sitting next to you could be your soul mate feel of the rest of the show. There's a lot of blood on their hands even more so than on ben's hands when he's at the marina zay didn't have any agency here he didn't seem great with it. Hurley tried to do his best to rule against it Jack asks but only when it's too late and deepen her bullshit at this point in wants to just clear at all costs and i would also say that i think jack kate son and especially ben oregon all people who sort of can see the the end justifies. The means as i mentioned before right if like some people might have to die if it's in the greater sacrifice of succeeding in this big goal so again specifically like Post oceanic six son. I could totally see doing this right considering how she was ready to forrest gump there. Yeah forced gun. God i love it from ross one last one before we get into. Mvp l. vp's ross writes in getting to one of my major gripes with the series. One that keeps me up at night. Know lisi feeling unfulfilled. When i think about lost on the character. Some leaves her baby with mistake. Not knowing that she in general not come back. While mrs bake is pretty decent mr paik is not is. She just raised by the picks. My hope is that. After mr paik you know sort of a like a loses. His hold over the company was to jail. Yeah and this pick says get out and stay out on a want you around here anymore. And so now. This is like a strong single grandmother raising jeon teaching her how to be the strong woman in this world like her daughter was. Yeah for me. When i created the lost sequel island in animal. Crossing part of my narrative was that jeon came to the island under hurley's protection And was raised by hurley so hurley like kind of adopts g. On what age would that be then to think i. She's a kid and he came Brought her to the. I know what actually what what would be fun if jeon is the same age as ben was when he arrived on the island right like still able to like realize. What's going on recognize the circumstances but it's also at our formative enough age that hurley can welcome her with so really just like harry potter. She only has a few years with the jerseys before she goes off to this magical land like in. My mind is some sort of like benevolent beetlejuice situation. Where dude we're we're early brings g onto the island. She's a kid is like yeah so your parents died. It sucks. but they're ghosts and talk for them and so can do. It's like it's all just like one happy family hurley's ghost conduit ing the way that he does for richard alpert with isabella. Yeah that's how. I had gannon it. That's interesting now. the kwan's can now all live together. It's just the two of them are dead. Yeah that's still. Yes so. John is the deal here. Yes exactly before we leave this. Portion of lydia. Sorry not delia. We gotta do. We need to place the battered benjamin. The mysteriously mysteriously ass kicked ben. We need to place him on. The benjamin lioness beatdown counter. I don't think so we hold onto that. We have not seen the full circumstances of the beatdown. Uh i think. I think we hold onto that until dead is dead and we see it happen if we were keeping it would. Would you already read it pretty high. I mean it's tough because we don't actually see the beatdown. You know like i feel like in order of it or so great. That are great. But i feel like it doesn't it feels like it doesn't even matter to me until we actually like. Let me see fist. Hit face for it to count as a beat down for me. Yeah yeah fair for for All right twenty three points. Mike you've got to mvp's i've got three. You've got three. Ldp's i've got to. We're both giving. Mb people into l. louise hawking she gets. She gets the last one in she succeeded. She was the goal she was able to get a lot of information out. Quick was able to convert even like the most stringent non-believer into actually doing this even having him get his frigging father shoes for no particular reason. Like this is a great episode talking partly convinced by riley. I will give a point to desmond for just being like you know what no i'm not going to be involved in this you jerks. Well let me think. I think desmond is going to cause i think he'll get one more point for the affirmation beatdown of ben so i think despite only appearing in like three episodes of this season.

"How that's how i would. I mean he makes sense as well. 'cause you have we talked about. How like here's the most confident he has ever been in this first stretch of season five benz gone. He's been given control. And so i think it makes sense from like a mental perspective. He feels incredibly grounded despite everything moving on around him whereas everyone else is losing their minds right and so it also makes sense and that's another thing with day. Maybe that's the thing with daniel faraday as well right like he is relatively composed as much as daniel faraday can be because he realizes the circumstances. They're sort of cool under pressure because they are most anchor to their own concept with faraday. I think it's this idea of time travel and temporal displacement with lock. It's just like believe in the island and the island shall give back to you. This is from snorter johansen. Who writes in and says how could men in black appears christian in the distant past. It's a theory. The theory goes maybe lock. Didn't travel to the past like sawyer and company when he felled on the well. There's no denying the frozen chambers a very special place. perhaps it doesn't operate on the same time schedules. The rest of the island. Remember at the end of mazda christian talks to son-in-law in at the barracks in two thousand seven he then leaves them in joins them later as lock in dead is dead. what if inbetween those episodes. The man in black went to the frozen chamber to talk to lock as christian if it happened in the distant past like presumed. Then how could the man in black of known that lock must find l. louise hawking. I think that's like working within what we were talking about. And just like adding another couple of layers to it. I'm i'm not. I'm not mad at this theory. Right if we're tracking the travel and the man. But i think we'll get into that more with nama. Stay in dead is dead of tracking. His journey is i mean. It's also possible right like the wheel is stuck. At the moment i would. I think it's i think it makes absolute sense and in fact. I'm going to canonize it that the chamber in the orchestra does not time travel as well because otherwise that will not consistently be stuck in time right like it would materialize to other various iterations of said. We'll i think the fact that the wheel is still stuck in that position. That benjamin linus stuck it in in two thousand four is means that it just parentally exists as it did in two thousand and four that means cheaper itself is two thousand four or whatever if just exists in a time and space outside of everything i hear. That's the new hotness nowadays when it comes to pop culture products. But that's what. I'm thinking at the moment. This format -mat says one thing i've always wondered is what happens to somebody like bender. Lock after they turn the frozen donkey wheel in locks. Casey turns the wheel. Let's say sometime around day. One hundred ten post plane crash. And he's immediately transported to tunisian two thousand seven. Are there any theories about what happens to locks physical form during this time. Does he just not exist for three years. I would say yes believing exist for three years. We talked about this during during the shape of things to come because ben appear several months after everything in two thousand and five. So i think it's just a matter of his body gets transported through time. What it is. I don't. I don't think it's that like oh. There's the john locke living in purgatory for three years until it comes out of his coma. Rip van winkle style. It's just that the the orchid sends the island flipping through time and so that person is also going to be sent through time sort of like spit out at a certain point in time in the desert one last one. This from eric davis stein. Eric rights is the character of charlotte's seems like such miss. I think there was some potentially interesting stuff in her backstory but it never really came together and satisfying way. What should they have done differently with. Charlotte so i mentioned a couple of suggestions you know. I think if you somehow elongate the period of time where she is doting back and forth in. Her memory is might help. Because it didn't the honest thing is that we just didn't get to know her besides the fact that she speaks languages. What do we know about charlotte up to this point. I think if you expand on diving into her backstory. I think also if you honestly give her in daniel faraday mortared you together the entire season for we had daniel having a little bit popular for charlotte and we even talked about this season. Five right. we're like where is this sharlet coming from. I think what she needed. Ironically enough was time. I know they want to go for the shock of charlotte dying in episode five. Maybe but i think unfortunately in their kind of hurry up to make a big death happen they sort of had to askew a bunch of care development to make us care about this character dying Yeah i think that that is what happened. Unfortunately i'm not wild about it but it is what it is. Let's do. let's do the twenty three points. Mike with through those mvp's and l. vp's you've got three mvp's i've got three l. Vp's start us off all right. Well we gotta give it to the man of the hour here on three for three and giving points to. John locke i'm coming with you. Yeah i mean. John is a very important role in this episode. He stops everyone from dying of time sickness but everyone else survives. Because of what. John locke does he also has to do it because he's able to keep the time line essentially intact right. Think what lock is able to do is is incredibly big. And it's something that he's been in pursuit of the past few episodes. I think this. I think it's it's no coincidence. That lock starts a string of envy people because i think conviction wise an action wise. This might be. The strongest lock has ever been. Yeah i'll i'll just sign off and all of that. I love terry quinn. In in these past few episodes really love him here the whole like when he says when jesus like. Do you want me to help you. Go down the road. And he's like where would be the fun in that and that's another great gift of him just like sort of like wiping his face with his like sweaty shoulder. Terrier quinn is like both like playful. Sad like he's just running the full motion gamut of john locke here and we're just like even though it's it's so sad. I just i love the journey of the death of john locke do it's one of the best story and i know this controversial. Some people hate it. I think it's one of the best stories on lost. Is the way that they play this. The way that they're like unser omonia about it in in some capacities but the ways. In which i think is ultimately worked into like. They're being like a brighter. Note like the power of people when they leave you. I think is really beautiful. Message that i think that they are able to convey with such a such an incredible masterclass actor. So yeah john locke gets to. Mvp points this week. One from you want from me. So i'm going to give my second to jen. Look i don't know if it's a. Quan centered episode. or not. But i gotta give a quantum love here and jin does stop danielle rousseau from going down into those tunnels so he saves her and saves alexandra in the process. So give him a point here because he does a good job he also does a pretty good job of like anchoring himself in the time travel stuff like he's able to survive everything that happened in the eighties and i got to give credit in there. I'm gonna give an mvp point to the smoke monster. The plan is in effect. An even if you quibble with any of the interpretations of the smoke monster's master plan. Then if nothing else he killed montagne. Yes thank you. You did what any of us would do in that situation. Smokey and for that. We thank you speaking of smoking..
