"The big interview. Listen so good I. Let's welcome to the PODCAST. Ask former Major League player former major league manager Bo Porter Bo. What's going on man? How you doing or I'll tell you what? MLB Hot Stove. I mean this is an exciting time of year for Major League Baseball and I couldn't be happier with all of the the traction that has taken place where what free the agency with trades and you look at the number of teams that have been inactive or tanking over the years I I. It's just good to see that there are quite a few teams that are looking to get better and we should say Bo. Puerto Right now is in San Diego for the winter meetings. He's also an analyst for the Washington nationals television and speaking of the nationals. Did they make a big splash on the first day of the winter meetings by by signing the stud as right hand Stephen Strasburg to a record-breaking seven year two hundred forty five million dollar contract for the right hand thirty one year we use all What a great deal for the nationals? It's a wonderful nationals. Again I think in the day and age where you see players there's jumping teams and And then you think about a guy like Stephen Strasburg who obviously was another one pick overall he he he is one of those guys that stay in Washington was very important for him. And it's great to see that the organization and the player spoke with England so get exactly Willoughby's they wanted and free agency and when you look at this bill and again you know I'm in the organization that understand you know. Learn family understand. Mike Rizzo. This was top priority for them. Stephen Strasburg to retire as a Washington national. And here's the other part that I loved. The organization organization came out no games no Baloney and said. We can't sign both guys anthony when donor was tremendous again for them. One of their guys. You said that we have two big time free agents and we're going to sign one and there was no monkey business they pick Strasbourg. And you know what you know the game ball better than anybody. The game is about pitching. And when you've got a guy like that at the top of your rotation it's hard not to want to sign him. It was very difficult. We're going again. I think when you look at the free agent market and what has taken place in the early stages of the free agent market. There's even a return to the importance of starting pitching and I think the Washington nationals run-up success through the postseason en route to winning the world series has changed the thought process. Ah Lotte Front offices. And a lot of teams as they're starting to put their teams together. And you look at having those three horses at the front of the rotations. Jim Was Strasbourg Sherzer and call in. They were able to weather the storm of even one of the worst starts in Major League Baseball Nineteen thirty one. But when you have those courses and once those forces got going it was it was a great success story for the Washington nationals. But back to the deal rob when you think about L. Strasbourg opting out of the four years. One hundred million. What does that tell you right there? I mean can you imagine a hundred million guaranteed and you opt out of it. I think I would be afraid to leave the house. Well I think one. He knew his value When you look at the market and what other pitches agents had gone? It's over the course of the last few years but when you break this deal down you have eighty million of it the furred was the Washington nationals to me this was. It's a no brainer. Because if you take the seven year to forty five and you subtract two hundred million that he was already do over the four year period. You're talking about three years at one hundred and forty five million well if you're the nationals you get to the for eighty million of that. Now you're looking at three years fifty five million team Strasbourg when you when you really start to take a deep leno does a real numbers. You're right those are absolutely real numbers. There's there's no reason not to get that done like you say already on the hook. Four hundred million Already so yeah. It's a sweet deal and for Stephen Strasburg who's comfortable in Washington There was talk about the padres and the dodgers and maybe the Yankees and different teams. Who are looking for a stud? And he's comfortable. He got paid. What he you believe even know that won't last long? We both know that Garrett Cole will will wind up getting a bigger deal but I think Strasbourg did the right thing. Yeah and getting the biggest priority team Strasbourg. I think his family and you mentioned you know him. Being comfortable in Washington he has basically. It's route to their his family's comfortable there. And those are the things for Stephen Strasburg that were paramount and his decision making and when you look at the fact that even the deferment servant of the contracts Stephen Strasburg will be a part of the Washington Nationals Organization for the rest of his life so them deferring a portion of his money. It just gives the organization more flexibility to go out and continue to make the team better. There you go Washington nationals. Get there man Dan. I don't know if they're going to repeat and win. The world sues again but they did win they did win. Strasbourg was a big part of it and they have them back in the saddle. Hey Bo Porter always a pleasure to have you on the podcast match day. talk soon. Okay thank you up. When rob was a newspaper columnist he lived by vis motto? If I'm writing I'm rippin. Let's bring in a writer. Broadcaster older new Julia McWilliams. One of the brightest new young baseball writers. He covers the Red Sox for the Boston Globe. Julia what's happening. What's GonNa Rob? Thanks man always. And he's down into winter meetings in San Diego. A lot of buzz going on down there ever was happening. And everybody's weighing on the colder. Oh to drop. You saw transfer after seven years to forty five yesterday Board held his His annual winter meetings You know a a party whatever you WANNA call it. His his his thing has a big Shebang. Yes and he's Co is GonNa get more than that and we know closing holds a better pitcher so The a Yankee said they won't be denied. Thank you said enough to be tonight. You know usually get the guy that they want and they have money to pick up money to spend. They got money they got money and you know oh I think this year against the Houston Astros when they're when they're pitching plummeted. Their bullpen ran out. I think the wake up call the CASHMAN and say hey we need to go out and get some guy. How about the Red Sox? We know the big story when Dave Dombrowski was fired as team president and they were talking about the red sox going on welfare and You know they don't have any and all that other stuff I mean. Help me out. What are they doing and is there some way somehow? mookie Betts is going to be unloaded. Well I mean that's always a possibility if you look at the luxury tax situation and if they get under the luxury tax but you're trying to get on a twenty. Njit two hundred eight million dollars vic eight hundred million dollars next year granted. You're looking at mookie Betts Guy. That's that's a You know a two thousand eighteen. MVP You know. He's the second best player in my opinion other than my trout You know this is a God is the fixture in that line of man and and you know they've gone to the table and they they. They offered him two years and this guy is adamant that he wants to go into free agency. They so they could unload them but the fact of the matter is I don't know if if you unload them and you're a team that's in the running for something you know. Okay it's not like Kawhi Leonard Situation where you're guaranteed it's baseball you know that it's not a guarantee that you win the world series just because the one guy and granted if you unload them you might be giving up some prospects in return so You know and he's a rental. It's a rental thing. So Oh it's GONNA come down to our team it'd be willing to give up the prospects and I don't know if they'll be able to be willing to do that because it'll be a huge because he's he's that type of player. What's your gut? So does he ought to. Does he play for Red Sox this year. Yeah I think he. He plays the Red Sox. This Jack can't see. It seems unless team field that they're really really close and he'd be the guy to get them over the Hump I can't see them Giving giving last year I returned the new to make twenty seven to thirty million dollars in arbitration this year. So that the one that bill I don't know I think he plays for the Red Sox this year the Texas Rangers got a big checkbook. They opened up a new ballpark. This season coming up. You know they're talking about trying to get Garrett Cole I I mean Anthony Window and what do you think about that. Where does he want? Why does he want them pay? That's I mean he's the he's the Texas kid I mean people I spoke to somebody from From the national after the won the world series and they said you know they're they're pretty much you know Sold on he's probably not gonna be able to come back next year. I know they offered him to seven years to fifteen but a lot of that was the furrow money. He declined that so I think they got they got the Strasbourg deal and now they're looking at a situation where they're trying to get them but I don't know if they'll be able to dish out that type of money to get lost and I think he either goes in Texas now The angels that makes too so you never know what that situation but this is the guy that put on the show in the world series and you know he he deserves the money for sure last thing just your gut where does Garrett Cole Wind Up is it. The Yankees isn't the dodgers. Is it the padres. Where does you wind up? Look the Yankees missed out of them in two thousand eight he decided to UCLA. He grew up Yankee Gi fan. A Yankees swing and miss when they really want somebody I think he ended up being Yank there he. Is Julian McGuire. Who covers the Boston? The Red Sox for the Boston Globe always a good recheck. Him Out Julian thank you so much. Happy Holidays to you and yours and create a robin anytime. The future is closer than you think and it all starts in the palm of your hand you may have heard the news. Five G. is coming but what does that really mean. How impact me in this new iheart series this time tomorrow presented.

"You gave me up tune to play and I really appreciate it. So I went home and I was home for two weeks mil mil. April. And my agent calls me up and says the Detroit Tigers won't you? I said, what I said many fifteen, and they don't need me. He said the Detroit Tigers once you. So it wants you triple and today's. So I had to pack up again and go AAA. Well, I took you know they didn't put me right away. I took a week to get conditioning again, and then put me in the lineup I had a contract and says, if I'm not in the big league by June. I, I could ask for my release. Played in Evansville. And I was again, playing real. Well, I wanna top players league RBI's. I was hitting pretty good hitting three hundred and the Tigers came to me a day or two before, June first and they said, we know that you got a June first deadline to be in the big leagues. He they said, high of it where you stay a couple of extra will you give us a couple of days extra? So we can get a roster move for you and my agency. Well, lot of people won't you right now as a year, but they didn't give me a chance. I said Detroit gave me a chance. I said, I wait. So I waited and then they got the big leagues June fifth. Of that year. And I had I had I had to fortunately with some warriors, some great ballplayers. I mean great ballplayers probably the best ball players on one team at at at that particular time in their careers. Lou Whitaker, Allen tramway Kirk Gibson, Chet lemon lands. Peres Jack Morris, Willie Hernandez was an MVP Cy Young winner. That year Dan Petri. I mean I play with some warriors. We had about six guys hit double figures. Home runs on T an extra man's would just extra man was fantastic. And sparking knew how to manage. Sparky ever know how to manage captain hook. I remember they called him in Cincinnati. What was it like playing for sparky Rubai? I always regarded sparky as one of the finest men forget baseball, just one of the finest men I had ever met. He is wanting to find his men that you'll ever meet. Okay. He was a man who was he had his ways. Now he'll tell you the minute boys, my way or the highway. Yep. But, you know, he was it was it was a great man. Sparky didn't manage the game on hunches, sparky marriage the game the same way all the time you can always think when when when he's gonna use you. So if you extra man, you knew certain situation, you, you need to be ready because spark is gonna put you in the game. You know, it we're going to be like the last minute on man. You gotta you gotta go in you knew before that you might have to go in. So you always ready, mentally, and physically..

"Half the team down in Clearwater, Florida. Taking on the Phillies right now Detroit on top though, five four and the fifth the other half in Jupiter battling with the cardinals. The tigers. Also leaving in that one three nothing in the sixth new tiger. Josh harrison. Meanwhile, a ninety seven one the ticket this morning. He admitted that he and his wife pretty excited to sign here. Say a family in the metro Detroit area. But the team's current state was the biggest factor in his decision for me. This was an opportunity to come and be healthy play. Second base every day and got a good friend of mine in Georgia who I talked to talk to throughout the process. So I meant it would be a good fit and at the other day minute's baseball. You gotta go out and play Geordie. Of course, the Tigers new shortstop Jordy Mercer Harrison, also, adding no he feels he will be a fan favorite here in the motor city because. Of how he plays the game. And he's honored to wear sweet lose number one. I used to play game. I'll say your call sports talk baseball and Detroit was like my favorite team because they had a pretty good hidden squat. Mickey title. It was you know, tram Lou Whitaker, and you know, a lot of names. And ironically, I remember he was the second basement. I wore number one, and it just seems fitting because I like to think of myself as somewhat of an old school player, but I can play new school as well. Turn into the NBA pistons back to work tonight the point their lone home game during the six game stretch, they bring the Pacers the Little Caesars arena teams entering tonight's game. "The other way you get in touch is on Twitter hit me up at Jodi McMahon J. Oh, do I m. ACM an best tweet will be honored with the MAC. Daddy tweeted today award at the end of the show, and I gotta thank the whole bunch of people by nine ten. I remember I said if we get hundred forty-seven tweets, a forty seven tweets or seven tweets, we're we're up in the forties ready because by twenty of them corrected me on something that I said previous show, we talk about the. College basketball. Duke came into this week number one. Even though they had a loss and got beat at home by Syracuse. Michigan was undefeated were sitting at number two. Candidacy was three even though they already had a laws and Virginia was number four. I'd say Virginia lose I'm not sure exactly who is going to be the number one team. I think I said Tennessee lost this week. They did not lose this week. They lost previously in the season to Kansas. Great game. Squeaker overtime. So Tennessee had a loss. But for some reason, we're ranked Atta Virginia, it's the pulse. Where you can stay in Virginia. Wind Virginia's gonna number one. No questions asked Duke wins. I don't think they retain number one. I think Tennessee's should move up. Pass Duke, and I guess to number one Michigan lost at Wisconsin today. It's not a terrible laws. But Wisconsin's only okay this year. They're not a not a top ten team. I guess Tennessee would go to number one. Now, Virginia and Tennessee would both have won loss. Bo tat lost. You can certainly excuse to Kansas either neutral floor and Cameron. Now, I wanna knows losses. A damning laws Tennessee jumped from three to one. Or maybe even how did the closeness of this game where Jinyan Duke could determine it. But do gets a little a little rose bloom off the rose with the fact that they got beat this earlier this week. I I watch a lot of that Syracuse game great game back and forth between the two and man Williamson played well, but he wasn't enough to get a team over the top. They lost Agni with the shoulder separation and the price at man that hurt I just flipped the game on. I just seen that play. I say he's done for the night. I didn't even know that RJ bat wasn't playing because I just turned the game on found out afterwards. Barrett was ill and came out. Just sat on a bend didn't even try and warm up. So they didn't have Barrett to start. And then they lost Jones in a game. Maybe the cuts Duke a little bit of slack for that. I don't know how to ratings go to come out. But I had I think I said. And Tennessee losses week Duke lost Michigan lost Tennessee lost Virginia loses. Here. We'll know Tennessee getting lose this week. They lost earlier this season. Why meant to say was of the top four teams. Nobody would be undefeated. But thank you to everybody who reached out on Twitter and corrected the host not going to get your MAC. Daddy. The day. But I will at least acknowledged that was wrong. And thank you for correcting me. Crank from Lansing. Michigan up on CBS sports radio. Hey, good evening. I wanna talk about the patriots and chiefs, but you brought up the hall of fame baseball. So I don't know who's been nominated or what what's happening, but just let me get an outsider, you know, out of the Detroit market. What are you think about Lou Whitaker hall of fame is the you know, when you watch him play, what your I tell you? I mean, we all I mean, I I can't really give an objective opinion here because I mean, I love the Whittaker. But what know you didn't. You know, you're you're not entire fan. I mean, what do you think? Well, I will attempt to give you an objective opinion. And I'll tell you did it really isn't truly one hundred percent Jacob because my father worked for the Detroit Tigers for a bunch years. He still lives in lakeland, Florida. When I go down at spring training. I often attend tiger games. And I got to meet both Alan Trammell, and Lou Whitaker and Baltimore. Great dudes. Allan Allan got in last year via the veterans committee or the new fangled way of doing it. That includes some hall of famers, and some writers and the like, and Lou will be eligible we of that group because he's no longer on the ballot. I don't think either one of them was all Famer now, I'll give you my father's opinion. Who knows more about baseball than anybody? I've ever met my life and was a tiger vice president, and I don't know if he's completely unbiased. But he always says he is in me judging him, I'll tell you that. I believe most times he is. I think he's if he is unbiased, and I just think he's wrong because he said Alan Trammell as a hall of Famer and his book and his book is probably better than my book. But if he didn't have a book, you wouldn't have an opinion. Why the hell would you have a sports talk show? I either travel or Whitaker wall of favors. I thought they were both close. But I thought they were both short. Now. Jack Morris got in with tram last year. I always believed the Jack Mars was all of Famer and when he kept getting past Auburn past Auburn passed over. I said what are they thinking? What did they think? What are they thinking Morris? I did believe was a hall of Famer I always thought. Whitaker and trauma would just a little bit short nature. Detroit. Tigers soliloquy today, I get back to the football next because Roger from Florida. Doc, right? The Rams and you mix other than that the phones are open a little bit like we were supposed to have guessed dick per meal. Unfortunately, not gonna be able to come on with us today. Maybe run a mile sometime down the road eight five five two one two four two two seven. No coach more time for you on the phones. After the latest CBS sports update would see though. Sports flash. Thirty based on this week's results alone that will certainly be a shakeup of the college basketball rankings. But at the moment, you got a top five matchup ongoing in Durham under eleven minutes to go second half. It is a good one Duke and Virginia right now tied at forty nine. A piece Duke looking to bounce back from the overtime home loss to Syracuse earlier in the week Virginia looking to remain unbeaten and get to seventeen and five in a C play rest of the scores. Second-half never ate Texas Tech on the road trailing Baylor fifty to forty to potentially another upset on the day. You already had a few earlier Wisconsin knocking off second ranked Michigan in Madison sixty four fifty four first loss of the season for the wolverines and seventh-ranked. Kansas went down in Morgantown, West Virginia. Seven run the closed the game to edge the jayhawks sixty five to sixty four for their first big twelve one of the season, third rank Tennessee almost went down at home to Alabama. But the volunteer survived the beat the crimson tide. Seventy one sixty eight Virginia Tech over Wake Forest eighty-seven seventy-one Kentucky outlasted Auburn eighty two to eighty in a match up of top twenty five teams. North Carolina one of Miami eighty five seventy six NC state over Notre Dame seventy seven seventy three ole miss cruise past Arkansas, eighty four sixty seven and Purdue beat number twenty five Indiana, seventy to fifty five NBA pelican star. Anthony Davis expected to miss one to two weeks. Let finger sprain suffered in last night's loss to the blazers Markelle Foltz return to the Sixers bench continuing his shoulder. We have no timetable for his return to play just yet. Sixers came up short at home against the thunder today losing one seventeen. One fifteen is Paul George of the late four point play to steal the wind for okay? See? Elsewhere just went final in Charlotte Hornets blew out the sons one thirty five one fifteen first-quarter action pistons at only the king's thirty to twenty two you got the Pacers out in front of the Mavericks twenty four twenty three the bucks with a twenty-seven seventeen first-quarter edge on the magic in Orlando. "Now the pistons now trae ninety five to eighty eight Blake Griffin's on the bat. She's not lifetime. See he's only played twenty eight minutes but plane playing twenty three minutes. He's got to block shots Blake's. Got none. He's got six rebounds unless minutes a blank, he's got to. That's crazy. And he's got four assists and Blake's Blake's got four and a turnover no turnovers for peculiar. Two steals and Blake's got one two blocks and Blake's got none. Because he won't put his hands up on defense. And not like when I see here, folks. I said the pistons go make the ploughs if they lose this today might ninety seven to eighty nine in Orlando beatable team Orlando, but Leonard lost four straight games. I've talked to their code former coach and former coach the pistons. He said Ron he said we play terrible for couple of who lost four straight where we're getting killed. Then Trump comes to town we boulevard now, we play you guys. I said to winnable game against Detroit. And wanted to say that but I'm saying it's now ninety seven to ninety six fourteen left. Not good. Let's go to cowboy Wednesday. Hey, there cowboy what's happening with you, man. Nothing much, but I didn't expect a Weinstein route the Packers like that. No, nor did I. But then again Rogers was hurting they use Kaiser, and I guess he no pre show that he's a couple of years from being any kind of NFL quarterback. Who's at Kaiser? Yeah. He's he's running around like chickens head cut off because he put it there under duress over there. And then Murray last night. Yeah. Yeah. Well. Alabama's defense was the cause of most of that. But you know, what happened, you know? And I said this on the air, I think last week unless was on the other radio station the over and under that game Orlando. Oklahoma and Alabama seventy seventy so this way to said, no, it's too low. And I was right with seventy nine I think forty five thirty four. Yeah. Boy. Oh boy. Oklahoma. Well, Alabama Oklahoma wake up until they were four touchdowns behind so twenty eight to ten there were behind. They were twenty behind twenty eight to nothing twenty and they score ten points score ten. Yeah. And then what happened was and somebody called me. So they're they're going to get skunked know Oklahoma's gonna score watching C, and they scored they made it closely scored thirty four points in the game. Yeah. That was that was an interesting game though. Very interesting. Yes, you're right. Oh, by the way, you do know that quite more diapers in nineteen years ago. Friday. Was it? I don't Clayton more of the lone ranger. He was tree was terrific. Did you know that they're real lone ranger was black? No, I didn't know that. Yeah. Well, you know, I spoke in front of the lone ranger thing when they were on W XYZ. Of course, I then became sports director over there. And then he, and I spoke some of the remaining people came back, and I spoke it field and a gathering we packed to place in the world. I was a master of ceremonies. I guess. Claimed Moore was fantastic jet Carlton more is that was his real name. Jack, Carl more. Yeah. He died of a heart attack. Was he eighty five? Oh, yeah. Hey died. Three months before. My sister. Wendy. Oh, yeah. I'm just glad this year is overlook I lost. My sister two cousins to family. I just try to locate a buddy that I haven't been able to find him. That is so sad, by the way, my favorite rock band. And and well, my favorite trigger and rock and roll died. Thirty three thirty three years ago. Friday fill without a thin Lizzy was thirty six. Irish band. No, okay. Boys are back in town, Rosalie rose. Okay. Trombley that they covered it from the oh, Bob Seeger. Was that jaycees daughter granddaughter? No, no. She was the program director at CK L W. Okay. Oh, I didn't know that I met her in two thousand five the way everyone I did show over there. Mickey Mouse was. Thirteen weeks. And I said, I'm outta here. I don't need this too. Box in there too. I don't need. This is too much in the program. Nobody listens to the station. Nobody listens more Mickey Mouse. Now that was back when you were. More Mickey Mouse now there were below zero the ratings I know well, now the total joke now I called her a few times, really Dallas. I am a few times. And they. I don't know what they think you're doing over there. But on your boy, Tito Fuentes will be seventy five on Friday to you is what a character. He was. Then he plays seventy was a seventy seven for the Tigris hits hits three or four and sealed it's three or four. Yeah. He was he wasn't much of a fielder. I know what? No, no. He wasn't. He was he was shown. He was a show. He played Detroit. One year, then he nineteen seventy the next year with the giants. The only hit about one forty or. So you're close he played the next year with Oakland Oakland apnea. Yeah, you're you're you're you're in the right area. And then he did the he was playing here when I did the Tigers Cincinnati game in seventy seven. And I called that plane right field. Bengali's bothered. He hit Powell. Yeah. And that was wild. I turned around and looked at near the fans throwing everything on the they were fifty thousand people there Tamala park. There were throwing things at me on the phone looked. I looked at dick reduce he just turned around and clap he didn't say a thing. He told me later on. I was good. And what happened was real was looking at the pointers. All over the place way as it shut up. You don't get back in and. And then later on when I was in a game toward the end of the year. They brought me a can I talk to you Ron for second. Route the manager going. Yes, What's up ralphie said? I'll deny this to the day. I die. I will tell nobody else. But you got to play. Right. Ron and we both just double up laughing. Oh. Yeah. By the way, that you have my rich on your one of your show. Nobody took was first NBA gave him and Jason Thompson. I took them to the first. I can tell you story birthday except he's a year younger. But anyway, I wonder how many people really know the whole story about what happened that said rich anyway, other than you and a few other people when you what have you talked about when he heard his arm. Yeah. Well, what happened was the limitation apartments? Down river by the airport. And I guess he was messing around with some girl in there. Her boyfriend came up and twisted his arm story. Yeah. I him and three of his buddies. I understand I didn't know I didn't know. Darnest to try to cover that story up. How can Campbell try to guarantees? They cover that up. Well, I don't know about that. It didn't make headlines or anything like that. Yeah. I'm surprised nobody else found out about that. Because it's eleven three apartments RND targeted thought. Somebody would have known about it. Well, the thing is you see sometimes I'm going to give myself sometimes I know too much. And I see it on the air. And I do piss off a lot of people as you probably know you for long enough to know that I piss people off, and that's the way I wa I don't mind it. They don't like me. So what Joe McConnell joke to listen to this per se? Polls me to come. You got noise in the background shut up. Like to tell people where to go here. Bath. The staff here where they can go. So where was I now? Now, I got torn up thing here. About something about Joe falls. Joke falls made the comment. I'll never forget this comment. I write too many people in our business broadcast and writers right to impress. I write her talk to express I write to express not impress. I'll never forget that. I'll never forget that statement. Yeah. That's a good. Yeah. That's the way a lot of these people. Right. These days they can write and he's mostly sports talk. And all these other hope can't talk. I listen to a guy on this one station last night. Is that four hours slobbering? I mean, I, you know, I felt like each like trying to get him a Bill by mean absolutely bat how badly founded by the way, you're right. You're right on your statement about. About is. He. Was last year with Oakland. He did hit one forty. Yeah. Yeah. He was. Yeah. You'll go here. But he was about a two he was a pretty good hitter for average. But let's here's another thing for the surprising. His last year Detroit six hundred seventy three times up. He had three oh nine. Yeah. I know. Yeah. Man. And ten triples. Anyway, the league in triples or come close with the ten he probably dinner close enough K P one hundred fifty one games. I I'm surprised. They're Tito point is he was a character. I'll tell you that. Yeah. Yeah. He was a character. And before I let you go was interesting what we had to say yesterday. Sparky was so eager to get rid of Robbo floor. You know, he would he ever say isn't that something before for you? Or your me? I couldn't believe that. I was surprised you come on admitted that I was four around that was pretty much in an open secret. You know, he he, you know, a lotta gonna come out and tell you this in a lot of black players kind of sparky was bigoted. He keeps. That came from Jalen Ron leflore behind. He came from jail. "Welcome back America park press box I live a little bit Before a game time so we? Thought why not throw, another segment of talking about Jack Morris Alan Trammell of course, we mentioned Lou Whitaker is well before the Tigers and. Twins get going in this finale of this three game series and one more. Thing about more is that at least, stuck out to me they showed it on the big screen but I. Was nine years old in April were Jack Moore is nineteen Eighty-four threw a no. Hitter against the Chicago, White satin and believe it or not not that anybody cares but it was playing, wiffle ball in my backyard and my father back then said you gotta. Come in and see this probably in about the Senate inning and that's one of those games, that other than the big. Games that Jack is pitched in he's the Torius for that no hitter tennis set the tone than they went thirty five and five right. First place the whole way ended up winning. The World Series first of. All who didn't, play, will ball. That's how I grew up For all the time But no that's a good point because he was so so. Great in, that, game I mean I I don't even know how many. Walls were, hit hard I mean you, can track them now but I'm not sure there are any balls. Or hit real hard that's, how good he. Was and. He is he is they talk. About that a, lot you see video but all the time and you should because anytime you pitch a no. Hitter is pretty special and I don't think there were many great plays may behind him because they didn't hit, the ball that hard but that was that was a game that. Really stands, out yet you know he was so dominated in that game. From what I remember but but but, Jack is kind of and I remember talking to him about this as well would not sure is there was here in a. Lotta pictures these days it's a rarity to have a complete Back then of course it wasn't a rarity but Jack to me seems like a kinda. Guy that not big with the sabermetrics You know Plain. And simple got, the ball throw the ball and last as long as you. Possibly could you know some of the things that they're doing, now I I like some. Of them some of them I don't, agree with but, you know they talked about move the ball over two inches move. The boy you say that to what booth all over two inches nobody can. Do that either hitting mitt pounding inside you. Pounding away you, go upstairs you, go downstairs and that's the old fashioned way pitching in and that's been around for a. Long time and I think sometimes there's too much of the other thing you gotta have the eyeballs and then some of the other stuff and mixing near the. Right, way yeah totally. With you, I mean I'm all, for? Information right you can't lose the. Eyeball test you can't have too. Much information that's that's the problem you're out there in. Your thinking you're. In trouble that's. Very fair and the Tigers doing a heck of a job of kind of catching up sabermetrics and they have their own group to do. That now but going back to eighty four thirty five and five star won't. Be, believable yeah that's fair to say and think how good the Boston Red Sox are right now thousand. Eighteen idol I think. That eighty four teams and maybe. It's just because it's near and dear to our hearts. Or from Detroit. I don't think. That team gets enough credit locally or nationally I mean is that fair well you could say that I mean I played on world championship. Team I know gets a lot, of credit you know the sixty eighteen chirp. But, eighty four they were the same as us I mean they had great players we had great players I know we give. Them the the notoriety that. They should have because I talk about them a lot they had great players I mean great players but three hall. Of famers Lou gets in and the other big wheel behind. The plate, I mean you? Kidding, me then they put. The pieces, together kind of the year before. He picked up a couple of players. That made that team really what, they were to. Win the World Series and they. Won the, World Series easy there's. No question about that Yeah it's funny too because you. Think of how they won the World Series a. Bunch of guys they grew up in the minor leagues together and they matured. And we've seen other teams do it and the tags did in eighty, four AM truly memorable. No question about, it and there's nothing like having that ring that's. What. We all, wanted and I have that ringing I'm proud. Of we're gonna take a. Break now we'll be right back. After this timeout hi I'm.

"Do you have any sparky Anderson in you? Anybody that you have from your playing days that you put into your managing where again, you've won manager of the year in both leagues. Only one seven guys ever do such a thing. I try to take a little bit of. Of, you know, everybody I've been around as far as managers go and and players as well. I came up in that system and when you come up in in a system, make the big leagues, it's really like kind of university, you know your freshman and your soft more. You finally make varsity. I came up behind guys like Kirk Gibson and Alan Trammell and Jack Morris, and and Lance Parrish, and Lou Whitaker and got to watch them firsthand and see how they played the game. So they're very impactful. My in my career, Kirk Gibson was just here announcing. He's been a good friend of mine and took care of me as a rookie. But I try to take little bits and pieces of of every team. I've been on every manager. I've played for good and bad, so, but the Tigers are definitely a team that probably you know, resonates is much as any based on the fact I came up with the best player you ever played with. That's a tough question. Played with men there. There are a lot of really good ones. I, you know, how can you go wrong with Cal Ripken and what he did in Baltimore, you know, maybe maybe not the. The streak and what he brought to the table every single day. He took batting practice everyday to infield every day and he played in every inning every game. It's pretty good one start with. That's an awesome onto start with. Okay. So do you talk to your team about what's developing? I mean, how do you? How do you address the the success that you've had so far to maintain it? How do you do that with your team? Bob, I tried pretty consistent and when we have advanced meetings, you know, every start every series I kinda add a little something. There's certain times during the year when then maybe you need to address them things. There haven't been that many this year. So I just try to, you know, stay consistent and you know what happened the series before and, and you know, kind of what we need to do in this series. And you know our clubhouse for mostly younger group guys is pretty well policed. And we have some veteran guys in there that that know how to run a clubhouse so you you just kinda take it series this series. And when you think you need to be impact. With what you need to say, and you've got right across the street from you there and that stadium dynastic team in the NBA if you had any relationship with the warriors at all, Bob, anybody any? I guess other than dream on green coming to one of your games during the finals a couple years ago. You're watching the warriors since I was a young kid and going to those games and my godfather was actually dictate who's the trainer for the warriors for a long, long time back in the championship seventy five. So I was able to to become a fan early on and and certainly now as well. I know Steve little bit Steve Kerr lives up, you know, lived up the street from me for a while since he's been here two and you know to be able to kind of watch what they're doing and and you know next door and and you know, kinda try to take some of that vibe that that they have in the championships that they have. It's it's it's a nice neighbor to have put it that way. So you knew Draymond green was in the house we did. We knew he was coming that night. I kind of made a joke and said, if he wants to hang out my office, he's more than more than happy. But I think probably suites a little better place to be with marshawn Lynch to, I'm not mistaken. That's what I understand. Yeah, he went. I went to Cal and so no Lynch factor in the bay area factor here. There's, there's a lot of that. So. Start talking about Melvin quake's very soon start talk. How about that? Hey, look, it's great to see what's happening right there. It's been a lot of fun to watch and good luck down the line..

Morning and wrapping up our stay for this day we'll be back on Friday once again and it's it's kinda difficult to do this show in the midst of training, camp because teams practicing while we're. On the air, and then. They all gather round and you know they. Talk they have meetings that begin shortly after practice so we try to put. It all together for you as best we can but sometimes. It doesn't, training camp Doesn't coincide with our schedule where, one of those spots right now Tell you what I would not mind I would not. Mind hearing again from from Alan Trammell we started this hour with tram and he went into, the hall of fame as you know the baseball hall of fame, on Sunday along with the. Jack Morris the sadly without Lou Whitaker and while we're awaiting the lions breaking up training camp, for the morning and their latest practice I. Think that might be a good idea can we do that Mr. maestro Mike Parsons back to the studio where or awaiting word. We're kind of doing this working excuse Nike's? Working on it KP you're still. There I. Think he's working on it all right I really enjoyed your conversation with Dexter bussey who was Saderat lion players I always thought Dexter was the man to go to of. You, needed three or, four yards and you needed. Now give it to Dexter? He'll, get it. For you and he will not fumble the ball he will not, make a mistake I thought he was one of the. Steadiest running back that I've seen, in in my years watching the lions up Frank gore type, of running back yeah yeah hey he was and the quality person, and hard working very hard. Working and I find the fast thing looking back in the in the animals that he had, his first hundred yard game that day that. OJ set the NFL rushing record at the Pontiac Silverdome well I remember I I was in the stands I saw that you. Really yeah unbelievable cars when you have Reggie? "Now, we're in a world where people can pasta become baseball experts who truly utterly never have to watch a game because all they do seriously all they, it was crunch the numbers period. It's all about the numbers. This moneyball to the integral vigneault. Billy Beane himself will disavow, you know, fifty percent of what's in that book. Now, my final thing on this Jim Thome I must say. Boston guy on, obviously, you know, but I'm the shortlist of my favorite players of my life. Jim Thome e is right there and I'm an and hit my interactions with him. We're always incredibly pleasant and I have no of no naysayer. If anyone here knows of Lawrence, Thomas MIT of you ever heard anybody personally, say a negative word about Jim Thome you the man supposed to guy who at the six hundred and twelve home runs. I wanna hear about it because I don't know of any such person. This is look I, it's it's lower here in Chicago. He was here with the White Sox for four years. The owner of the White Sox. Jerry Reinsdorf said that Jim Thome is one of the three greatest people that he's ever met. That's how beloved he is in the White Sox organization. And he's just one of those guys where when he would walk into the clubhouse always had time for you always had his story was always pleasant, and I don't think that there's some guys you, you can see through the facade. I always felt like it was genuine. In with Jim Thome e. Well, that's my impression too, and I'm glad to hear you echo that and last thought move onto football. Alan Trammell while being a fantastic shortstop and all the rest of also a guy. You never heard anything bad about the one thing that he did that you won't see anymore, like Jack Mars fighting to stay in a game. He negotiated his own contracts and did several of them while he was actually practicing like he did. He did one with Bill joy where he was out on the field and legit came out and throw a number out of it. What do you think? And he took grounder and he said, yeah, that'll do. And they shook hands and his contract was done, and I don't think we're seeing that anymore. Think about how many guys won't even talk about a contractor, they're not negotiating during his season? Yeah, I think anytime you can actually negotiate contracts with the glove. On your hand, you're doing something that's going to last for long time with very predictable and an admirable that he would use his time. Time to make the case for his double playmate Lou Whitaker. Okay. Before we shift over to the NFL, let me tell everybody today's show is brought to you by simply safe home security. If you've ever looked for a security system, you know that it's tough. A lot of systems are too expensive too complicated that got.

Of showers and thunderstorms between today and tomorrow we'll be late tomorrow clouds thickening today just a passing shower thunderstorm near eighty degrees tonight chance of showers and thunderstorms sixty six Tuesday late in, the day showers and. Thunderstorms become a little more. Likely seventy Seven from the Weather Channel I'm meteorologist Ray Stagich on news talk seven sixty WJR sixty, five degrees on, news talk seven sixty w j r and it, was a big weekend for Detroit and people take this very personally, Lynn Haning captured it nicely in today's Detroit News Dateline Cooperstown New York during his twenty year run as tiger shortstop Alan Trammell has was keen on playing smoothly and, efficiently minus flasher complications. Jack Morris took a different approach he spiced his pitching dynamics with emotions that sometimes generated as much heat as his fastball and, as much frustration as his. Pet split finger pitch Sunday at Cooperstown on a summer afternoon suited to porch swings into lemonade not to mention sunscreen each man turned his baseball hall of fame induction speech into a precise imitation of how he played big league baseball in Detroit And weren't we lucky to have both of them one of them Alan Trammell for all twenty years of his career Steve no question about it dub and it doesn't seem, like it spent thirty. Four years right since the Tigers one that eighty four World Series and got off to the amazing thirty five and five start Yeah, more, times than not we were always wondering along. The way what's what's the deal here I'll come Alan, Trammell Jack Morris aren't hall of fame bound will you know finally it happened which is more proof that good things come to those who wait Alan Trammell of course the six time all star four time gold glove winner and. MVP of that nineteen, Eighty-four World Series finally able to get in as a matter of fact, by doing so becoming the first. Tiger to enter the hall of fame, wearing a. Detroit. Cap on his plaque, since Hal new house. Back in hundred ninety two. And these two guys couldn't be more different from a personality standpoint. Alan Trammell always very very humble in his speech before 53,000 on, and. Cooperstown by the way thanking the late great sparky Anderson and of course his keystone combination? Teammate Lou Whitaker interesting note here Chipper Jones the former Atlanta Braves great also mentioned Lou Whitaker so maybe that'll Help help it get some steam here is. Hoping yeah Jack Morris meanwhile kinda humorous actually thanked the, sports writers who more times that he would Spar with during his major league baseball career saying whether you voted for me or not thank you for keeping my name alive unlike Alan Trammell Jack Morris spent some great great years. Here with the Tigers, of course wasn't the lifelong tiger spending time with his hometown Minnesota Twins, as well as the Toronto Blue. Jays and I'll point out winning a World Series. With. Both those organizations but, it was nice to. See both guys finally catering. Their rightful spot You know I don't know how they decide these, things but sparky was not wearing tagger hat. When, he went in and Obviously Trammell had to because we're the only. Team, he, played for but how do, they decide, what up to the plane they owe it, is up to the person oh yeah it is the players call And oddly I should say sparky had those wonderful years with a big red machine Cincinnati. Reds that's, remade his name, as a manager. And he went in with the reds camp but you. Know we knew exactly what Jack, Morris had. Done, for the Tigers and just one of the great competitors I mean sometimes you know he was abrasive I don't, think it's. A big. Secret to Jack that you know. He had that reputation Alan Trammell meanwhile even during his playing days, know just an old shucks. Kinda guy and one about his. Business in my sky Mr., consistency. It was it was a great great run and of course he still has. His place in the Tigers organization and that's nice to see and, it took a long time but finally it happened Allen thanks a lot of people including the family. And alkaline, and mentioned. His right hand Man Lou Whitaker et cetera et cetera In and he then, made a comment about the, the press, the Baseball Writers Association was you know he obviously. Was kinda sending them a little, dig but in the stories I've read it says that he never came close to election during his fifteen tries on the hall ballot in voting. By Baseball Writers Association of America? Members? So how did this come about then it goes to, another level which is a different tier and you are eligible for a certain. Amount of, years in the baseball writers you know they're in charge and you remember that. Debate throughout, pretty much from the time you know Alan Trammell career came to an end when you looked at his numbers as opposed to. Other shortstops, who were in the hall I, mean it, was a, no brainer And then what it comes down to is almost like a. Lifetime achievement, category and that's so he had moved into that category which is how he may say you give listen it's not easy getting. Into baseball's, hall nor should it be But that's why they call them. Hall of fame all halls of fame, and all walks of life are tough and important insignificant some, more than others and it's hard to top Cooperstown well and. The NFL is also very tough to, get into no question about. That now no slight to the NBA or NHL but when you're talking about. Difficult halls to become members of I would say major league baseball in the NFL, very difficult but, at the end of the day it's, nice to see that Alan Trammell and his teammate, Jack Morris finally get in Yep Wall of Detroit will continue to celebrate and bless you. And he says why don't you tell? Me why you don't like I'll listen should all thanks man even we debated five minutes earlier, about something and I said here's my. Problem when. I took math my teacher would? Say to me show your work. So you work how did you get to that. Answer how did you. Get to these random. Numbers b k and. Everybody, else does is they say his f- war. Is six point two that's great what the hell does it mean you're just giving me a number. I just make that up to you're absolutely right I agree with you I? See that criticism it makes perfect sense say thank you and. Then he flashes up something I don't know what's on your show or. Another one because I was on a few last week where has the career war of, you out, of your money and Russell Martin and they're about? The same and, there's, somebody else Handle or something. Yeah somebody who's good really good but not a whole Famer and they were? Comparable to your Molina and. This was like proof They certainly. It just to me it was proved that war is not perfect per federal. Approves prove the numbers can show me and this is. My challenge show me, how you get to the, number. Shown me how. You get there? I'll sit do all the boring crop to find out maybe I'll come, friendly but for me right now Johnny take? Random number so. What right your war when you come. On the show is a. Three, point seven how the hell, did I get to that I don't know I just made up. By like that thank you That's. A. Pretty good war war I'll. Take that well that's not a bad war but to, me I look at. The list of, war and I see flaws, Lou Whitaker I think. Has the same war or slightly. Higher than Derek Jeter there's nobody on. This planet like would tell you, that they are in the same category Lou Whitaker is, a borderline hall of Famer we were, tough on EMI was knocked. Off the ballot immediately someone could tell me off Famer I'd say okay maybe. Is Derek Jeter is a one hundred percent first ballot. Hall of Famer all-time, great he's on the Yankee, pantheon. If you name. The top seven. Yankees of all time he's probably in there so I mean that war, is not perfect clearly is not perfect now? I do look. At it I have an MVP vote. This year You just said Look at it I. Don't know why why is Look. At it Yeah I looked at the that I look at. The post. Today that's great. Good for you Look at a lot of things what does that mean. Look, award I look at what is he a, dumb is I look at, where to, see, okay. Let me see how stupid is. This, year who's got a better war then blah blah blah and. Then it. Makes me laugh What was it early one that I think we either, we, talked about I was on some show talked, about was it was Brett, Gardner had, I, say. More higher war than JD Martinez That was. Going crazy and. He's still is he's. Got like like. A thousand and Gardner. Had like six hundred ridiculous so I think. They don't have the defensive metrics right down on. What they have. I don't know there's some of it I don't know I. Look at it I think it's better than you shouldn't on my goal is to make. You never look at that's my goal John, Hayman you can stick around for a few more minutes I, want to throw out your. Cesspits at first base and some more on the Yankees John Hayman.
