"To deliver. It's the closer carousel recorded. That on my phone remember you know who knows it could never always be our last show. You know we gotta talk about alex race because the walks have finally caught up to this guy and the cardinals are still kind in it in the wild card race for the second wildcard the national league i mean reds right now lead the padres. Everybody's assumes padres. But i you know i had to answer a question today from the. They'll be team. But which team is most which jim currently in position is most likely to miss out and everybody has to pick reds will lose out to the padres. But i don't really believe that's going to happen. I really don't like. I think the cardinals might catch the padres. The padres schedules very tough. Now it's tough to pitch to pick the cardinals to catch anybody when they don't have jocularity and now they're changing clothes probably do giovanni guy yoga's but their lineup carlson. Who knows it's it's an interesting team. It's like the phillies. It's a five hundred team. I really wanted to say that. Oakland was gonna catch boston but without bassett and what trevino struggling at the back end. You know. i really couldn't do that. So i'm not sure. There's going to be any excitement from the playoff race. Really you know maybe yankees catching the raise. I i made a bold statement which will be shown on the web page. One of these days probably wednesday anyway your thoughts on saint louis. Not only that. Alex resume may have lost the closer world this weekend. Finally but what is next year. And where would you rank. Oh i like it. Yeah because i still wonder whether the cardinals have designs on trying to get him. A starters career you never know you never know they wanted to be a starter i. I think that their desires aren't matching. The reality ramos might be locked at this point in his career to being a good short reliever maybe next year. He's more equipped to hold up over. One hundred sixty two game schedule. They've managed them a lot better over the past several weeks. I mean you. You mentioned geigo. Staggers throwing six and two thirds more innings for the year. He's in similar numbers of appearances. So this isn't about health this is about performance is he's the right handed jose alvarado. You can't walk everybody and get away with it all right but i wonder whether the injury history and the inability to rack up innings means that he's having some fatigue at this stage. Yeah he walked guys all year. But it's really coming back to bite him now. I won't draft the next year either role i think they try to make him a starter. And then he gets hurt or the leaving the bullpen. But he can't get away with these walks. And i think if you've only giovanni gago was a closer he could be as good as ryan presley. He could be matt barnes. He could be a top ten closer borderline top ten closer so to me. He's a must add right now for the rest of this season And yeah i think he's going to be very interesting if he's there closer next season so obvious opportunity. Certainly as he's up to it skills wise oh eighty eight whip. Last year was already seven year. Before that i was already one. We have a pattern here with giovanni go iago's you know he's not giving up homers hard to hit. He's terrific. He wanted user all year he really should have been the closer all year if they chose to make him the guy they drop in the high leverage spots. I get it. But he's one of the few who's been consistent career. We set on that last. Show not a lot of relievers do that. He does anyone else that we need to discuss. I mean call me the as i think. Yeah i think trevino may have lost the job. He's only pitch twice in the last ten days. Which told me he's hurt. So i haven't been a weekly league where i have to relief. Pitcher spots actually activated. Alex komai for the first time. Since april into a spot ahead of lou trevino and i i played for i. I have a shot in that league. And i decided that trevino was too risky at this point They gave andrew chafe and save last night against the yankees. Sergio romano save over the as well. He is not quite as well but he was called on to close. Trevino's should have been available. What do you do here. Did you leave trevino activists week. I would not because they made a distinct point over the weekend that they were moving away from him due to his recent struggles on the way he has been pitching. It is the right thing to do. strategies i don't recall oakland schedule off the top. My head check in where the yankees were with. I don't try to take all my own team schedule off the top man. I think they're in washington but the the point there is and there's teams that have only five games this week which also factors in his at detroit for three and then at toronto for three. The toronto one scare me away. Would you actually activate me like i did. I call him a sold. And i decided activate coma. I can still switch that. Actually games haven't started. But i'm not sure it's going to get all the saves for seattle and then there in houston which scared me a little bit. So yeah and the arizona. One while that's thought of as a favourable matchup pitching in that park against that line which does have the occasional guy who can threaten a pitch of there ought not as great as you is setting up stuck and writer saturday. Well let's just fluid roles call me at detroit. Today to cubs games than three tampa. Good pitching environment cubs schedule cubs are like baltimore right now yet that that's how bad things are for that team. Now they'll fix it in a year or two but anyone else chad green. I mean yankee situation is now set right. The lefty the angry left. He's back he's fine. I don't know that. I'd say he's fine but he's chad. Green johnny lasagna. Somebody tweeted me. Johnny lasagna's actually what yankee fans call elisa. Which i didn't even know about. How do i not know that it's like you don't know yankee fan or something i don't think i do. You're you're not. You're on your mets fan. Oh no you're going with a cat belongs now. Fun fun bias. Cats been punted off this show for the mets fan thing from years back. So don't join them. Take a look at the schedule now. Now let me ask you about corey. Kluber i mean what do you do here. You can't activate them in a weekly but due even use them in a daily. What's the pitch count. What are your expectations for the final five weeks. Corey kluber back today at the angels. Yeah and then. He's going to baltimore home the next time. I didn't check how far out it is after that No chance i start him. I don't think he's gonna pinch deep enough into this game. He also was not all that. Sharpen the rehab. Appearances velocity wasn't back. I know velocity doesn't matter so much with him that as it does with other pitchers but if you saw how he did before the no hitter earlier in the year is a little off and on i need to see evidence i need to see a star or two. That are quality for stardom. So it's a wait-and-see total you could are you starting at all like you any optimism. Here for him. I mean. I have optimism on everybody. You know friends foes baseball players..

"Era lou trevino twenty saves in twenty two chances in a one seven five era guys people on the east coast of probably never heard of are making great contributions to this team making it to the post season and then in first place you have the houston astros. Five and five in their last ten. They have one three four after a quick. Four game losing streak. They'll now play the royals here coming up. But for the astros i have imperishable. I mean we thought there window is closing guys like Garrett cole no longer there george springer carlos correa could leave after this year. Justin bieber landers non factor. But a lot of young guys continued to develop your alvarez framer valdez. Luiz garcia christian. Havi air all big reasons why this team is still in first place and why they're window may not be shutting quickly as we had anticipated with losing all of these big names. The depth of this organization is really shining through this year. So where are we at the wild card. Well the yankees are now. The first wildcard team. They held that spot with two and a half game lead with the red sox and as currently tied for that second wildcard spot you have the seattle mariners three games behind then and then the blue jays four and a half out so it's looking like a three team race for two spots between the red sox athletics and yankees with the mariners on the outside looking in trying to end that That playoff drought. That's going on for twenty years now and those antsy fans out there and seattle. So what about you. American league fans out there. Let me know what your word association is for. Your teams was spot on. Am i off without al. You're feelin let me know in the comments. I would certainly appreciate it. "Ahead of the july thirty first deadline martin and his representatives have discussed looking for a three or four year. Deal that pay around fifty million dollars. So the marlins were about twenty million underactive under asking price. Martin is gonna be a free agent after the season. Of course he would be the top center fielder available to eighty six this year across two hundred forty play played appearances. He's always been a productive player. Very good again for the fish and a lot of teams are interested in starling martini. Now that they're here hearing that he could potentially be on the market. I mean the list is wrong. Right you got the yankees braves phillies raise reds blue jays. Mariners brewers red sox all of those teams have received below average production at the center field position and recently a report came out that John hayman of mlb network said that the phillies yankees and astros are all interested. In the miami marlins outfielder who seems likely to be traded so startling marty certainly a name we could add to the room sphere out here of guys potentially being on the move and martin the phillies makes a ton of sense just as a phillies fan. Perfect fit for this ballclub but the yankees looking to make a push. The astros could use a bat. So it's certainly going to be a bit of an arms race when it comes to potentially add in star lamar tek another report out. There says that the twins have not yet indicated to other teams that they are willing to trade players under contract beyond twenty twenty one. Espn buster olney. Basically said the only guys up for up forbid right now or nelson cruz. Michael pineda and handsome robe lace now. They there were rumors. Again that byron buxton could have been on the market but as of this report. They're basically saying hey. The twins aren't ready to go full rebuild mode yet. They're kinda writing this off as a fluke year and they think they're going to be better than this next season. So jose barea styler duffy. Kenta eight up byron buxton or under team control. People have talked about them being moved. But it looks like that's not going to be the focus here over the next two weeks as of right now in minnesota of course things can change if you get blown away by a trade offer now just looking to move on. From pending free agents there for the twins and then lastly the athletics focusing on bullpen help. The athletic sat in the second wildcard spot as of now three and a half games behind the astros but they're looking to add to the bullpen. Upgrades i it's it's. It's been tough out there to say the least for the naef athletics trevor. Rosenthal started the air on the injured list with shoulder problems. Recently had season ending hip surgery signed him to a one year. Eleven million dollar deal and he won't pitch this year. Jake diekmann lou trevino. I've done late inning duty. But it's been a revolving door out there for the as so the as likely to have interest in ian kennedy jolie. Rodriguez richard rodriguez potentially craig kimbrel. But if you're in as fan out there look for them to add a bullpen piece here over the coming days and weeks as we lead up to the deadline but that'll do it for segment number one of the mc baseball podcast brought to you by the gsm podcast network. I'm your host kevin. Mahalick will step aside here now for word from one of our spots in our sister show but when we come back we're gonna talk minor leagues. I'm gonna talk farm systems we did. Mlb draft. I'm going to rank you guys..

"The astros in our the astros gonna come back down to earth lot of question. Probably i mean they. They i think they already did a little bit in this last series. Where were they detroit detroit. I think they split a doubleheader something. Then that being lost the finale. Anyway they're i mean they're lost. They weren't like eleven games in a row. So they'll probably cool off a little bit though orange wagon But they still have to show that they can quite the lineup. I mean the that offense is incredible right now and they've played a couple of few series against the as and the pitching is just not been able to hold them down even oakland Which is strange because last year they are pitching was lights out against them in oakland So it's i think they go there go to houston for a series before the all star break. So that'll be a chance to maybe even things out A little bit before they get to the break but In terms of what they need to do both of the bullpen. For sure. that's number one because yeah right. Now they have lou trevino at the back end and a lot of question marks. And how you it's to you know if your starter gets like five or six i mean because you saw you saw that on saturday like Montefusco five four two in the seventh inning and became even get through the eighth without losing lead And jake diekman was so good. Last year. he's given up a lot of home runs right now which is strange so he went. I think i forget what the exact number but it was something one hundred fifty games he'd given up giving up sixteen seventeen something like that petite Shaky and other than that. Those guys you know romo has been okay but the other options are just like not as reliable as you would hope so. I think they could definitely add arm or two or more back there i mean hayseeds. Lozada's still kind of a wild card As to even as to what they're going to do with him because they're using it as a starter in the minors. And i think the long term goal is for him to start still but is that this year i don't know so yeah Pity staff definitely ask some questions And you know the offense. Their offense kind of comes and goes sometimes but they haven't gotten a lot of production out of the eight spot They signed mitch moreland. Who was going to be there left handed guy. That's really mostly what he's done. He's back to meddle senate first base couple of times but he hasn't produced a whole lot And they've been using jed lowrie as they were kind of right handed Da's guy and his numbers against left handers are markedly better than his numbers. Right handers so So that's not as much of an issue but yeah maybe some. Maybe another left handed bat interesting. That's that's not quite as easy to acquire at the deadline You and i are both addressing the trade deadline in this weeks paper And the giants Far on this podcast. A couple of weekends ago for said The giants have The ability of the financial ability to take on extra payroll which is in. This price is one of the main differences. I think matt. I'm learning about covering the giants as opposed to the as they say dick and and i think they would prefer to take on salary rather than part with like a bigger prospect in if if deal but they would really like i think to get another starter who doesn't start up But particularly the way injuries are going they would love to get another starter and particularly one that maybe has some club control beyond this year Which might cost them. A you know a decent prospector to but certainly if there's a lot of salary involved the giants can handle that The question is going to be. I think belt. And if they learned something here in the next week or two about belts availability the rest of the way do they need to go out and get another bat they might have to. They have enough flexibility Among their their players the roster's constructed with so many utility guys. That doesn't necessarily have to be a first baseman. They could get a second baseman. And you save. Thomas i weighed. I got a lot of different options at first but you know without F- longoria for the short term and potentially built for much longer i. I wouldn't have said about a couple of weeks ago. But now i'm saying that and like everybody they'll probably be looking for a little relief help if they added one reliever. I wouldn't be shocked for on tends to do a lot of things similar to what the as front office does. And we have the front office pretty much every trade deadline. When they're in it will pick up at least one reliever so And they'll probably be fighting over some of the same guys there because those guys come a little cheaper in terms of prospects. So i think it'll be fascinating but i think the one thing i think is pretty clear is this is the first time that Citing will be running the giants when they're in a position to make a major move at the trade deadline and he's gonna do something and i think he's going to do something you know i who knows yet. What big names might be out there. But i would not speed surprised to see him right in the middle of it so that should be fun. Yeah so you had something fun ish with a guy who's well known to both giants fans and and as fans and sergio romo was one of the few guys who did not particularly enjoy the first go round of spot checks more than everybody else. Maybe he did enjoy more seriously or not as serious. Did take it to the next level. what was what was that like. And what did he say. After dropping trowel on the first day was much. It was weird it was like after the first few. What's the first few like really intently. And you've i mean you've been. Have you been a globally field the globe global so you know how high up the press box boxes. It's like you're at the top of airplane. Hangar and all the players look like ants. Yes so like we watched the first few checks pretty intently just to see what was going right and no big deal so you kind of looking at a corner of your eye. So he finishes the sending. It's a it's a real lopsided game too so you know you're kinda turn right at the same time so i'm just kinda having to look up and just seem like drop the pants and like i think surgery And i don't think there was the tv like had cut away. I think at that point. So i wasn't like seeing any immediate replays but it's like i think he's trapped and he did In he explained we didn't talk to the game but the next on the field and he explained like. I said like i didn't plan on doing that I was kind of pissed kind of angry. Because i gave up a home run and i like made a bad pitch. Give up a home run. And then i'm walking off the mountain and all of a sudden the park comes up and says let me see your gloves. So he was like a glove. Here's my hat. Here's bill and let me just go ahead and open up the rest so i think it's been an isolated incident so far. Yeah i have. No i have not seen any other actual pants dropping. Um which is probably the best But yeah he.

"Little Geographic Division rivalry, I guess for every one of these serious, which is It's kind of fun. It adds a little bit of ah, of Jews to this. Yeah. Miami Atlanta, of course in the National League East, so anyway, so this was the match. And I think most baseball fans would have wanted to see as Faras who he is, would have to play the asteroid would have to play. But if I'm being honest the next series than that, I think everybody wants to see his Astra's Yankees. Right. That's where that's where I want my rematch. Race fans don't feel that way. Don't get me wrong, he's Yankees would be fun. Take you back, Teo, you know early 2000 guests, some of those those five game division Siri's you'd see at the Coliseum and then Jason Giambi leaves and goes. There's always that little thie cross country, small market, big market thing for the A's and the Yankees. That rivalry has been a pretty good one. I think we haven't got a lot of it in recent years, but they didn't play each other in the wild card game two years ago as well, Right. Aaron Judge hits a home run off Liam Hendriks and Lou Trevino and a good outing that tape that was just kind of hit. So anyway, the The next series. I'd like to see is Yankees and the Astros. I want to see if you want to see how to go up against the against Aroldis Chapman again, Right? I want to see those guys square off against each other with a shot to go to the World Series and, hey, the one thing about sports. It's always fun is when teams are counted out or when you paint a team into a corner. I dig a team with something to prove. And the Astros who hit under 200, that's serious sweep the two games serious weep in the wild card round who had a bunch of career lows and batting averages. Finished under 500 made it into the postseason anyway. They feel like everybody hates him. They feel like everybody's count him out. I think the story is fun. Carlos Correa yesterday hits that second home run. He's rounding third base and he cups his ear to the A's and their dugout. I mean, that's the kind of stuff you love to see in the postseason. He was fired up. He was screaming at his bench. The other note here on the Alex Bregman home run. He homered on October 5th. That's Bregman Day. You know if you've seen this note, it is the fourth consecutive year in the play offs that Alex Bregman has hit a home run on October 5th. It's crazy. It's just crazy October. 3rd is mean Girls Day October 5th is Alex Bregman. That's the way that goes down. But that was some fun. Baseball will get into a little bit of the sound from baseball Yesterday. Carlos Correa had some comments after the game, and Lance McCullers, who started for the Astros had some comments to and Chris Bastard basically said, You know, we don't care. We still have to win tomorrow. So Goes to the hill today for the For the Oakland A's and you'll get a get a game, too, as well as some other games. The other Siri's in the National League get going today 11 o'clock this morning. Actually, Marlins and Braves 11 37 is a CZ. Astros Yankees raised at at 5 10 tonight, and then it ate 38, Padres and Dodgers. You talk about people not caring about certain Siri's Only putting the two middle Siri's really in prime time for everybody on the East Coast. So anyway, that's the that's the baseball today. Lots of football stuff to get to from yesterday regarding the 40 Niners K one William's going on IRC Beyonce had done for the season. They're banged up, man. The runningback situation is a little funky right now to Kyle not really sure where he's going. Basically, with the with the rest of his is running back room. Jermichael Hasty did not get a touch last weekend. Jeff Wilson Jr. Who had been kind of the downhill hard nose runner may be the hardest runner on the team, just a different type of runner than Jet McKenna days. Who supports to fill that Tevin Coleman role didn't even get into the game till the third quarter last week, So I know again that we talked about it yesterday. That 38 Yard quote run from Brandon, I. You sort of threw off the The yards per carry. Average was not super happy yesterday when talking about the Russian attack, which is gonna have to be there if you're starting back in quarterback, right? That's what all of this is predicated on. And speaking of backup quarterbacks, because CJ's best quarterback we haven't built well, I was going to go. Ah, different round here. I'm going to go the quarterback who used to start above C J and then got benched for CJ talking Brian Hoyer, CJ and Nick or two of the more highly respected guys in our locker room. Yeah, I don't doubt that. I don't think that's ah bad statement there the quarterback of the team, they're the guys who Who everybody's rallied behind and you've seen both of them now have some level of success. That's John Lynch talking about that. I don't know. At what point may be that last week with Murphy Mac, but as far as back up Quarterbacks? No, I think I'm feeling pretty good. Considering what Jared Stadium and Brian Hoyer did yesterday. Hold her, by the way, making his seventh, making a start for his seventh team, a quarterback that no one behind, I guess Ryan Fitzpatrick Fitzpatrick is the all time leader and Dave this morning thought it was Vinny Testaverde testified he did play for for seven teams only started for six of them, though. Scrubs. Thank you. Medium impact, Brian anyway, Yeah. Makes it pretty clear why Bill Belichick went out that Cam Newton, right? Like this is so funny coming into this game yesterday. And for all this week, I guess and really all the offseason talking about we're gonna get to find out whether it was Tom or whether it was Bill. Was probably both of them. It's probably probably build ballistics game planning and Tom Brady being the best quarterback there ever was right. Like you got a You got to make good decisions. You can't throw interceptions. You can't turn the ball over. That's what happened. A bunch yesterday combined for three interceptions. I think Hoyer fumbled as well, Hoyer instead of both both a rough game for them, But again, they flew in yesterday. I mean, at one point they had a shot of being in that ballgame To quote Pauline Max. Bill Belichick was coaching his balls off yesterday and and it's tough to you fly in day of game and then you fly out day off came and you get all the game in between. That's that's insane stuff. So the other news from yesterday, Bill O'Brien out in Houston. We got to talk a little bit about that on then there was one of the game last night. Aaron Rodgers continues to slice and dice. He's got 13 touchdowns. No interceptions through four games as the third most all time with no interceptions through four games, the other to Peyton Manning, and I think the other guy was Pat Mahomes last year. Both years that those guys did that They won the M V. P. So Aaron Rodgers off to a fantastic start to tell you, man. He's gonna look good in 40 Niner rednecks Anyway. On the other side, we'll talk a little bit more about what happened last night will get into some of this couch Shanahan stuff because He seemed to me a little bit concerned in his in his media presser yesterday, not that he's stuffing his crumbling or anything, but the injuries are piling up their pilot a bed and he doesn't totally of a straight answer on when Richard Sherman's back on when we're he most herds back there some questions to be answered, and he does not have them yet..

"For a strike. So are we expecting Soria for the eighth and Hendrix for the night? I think so. I think I think based on the way things have gone here down the stretch. It looks like it's set up to be exactly that The Owen and Madrigal shoots went down the first in a nice play, reaching down into his left by Olson. He'll go to the bag himself, one down. Now, if you're Bob Melvin, you're definitely at the point of the game. You're count announced. You know who your guys are. The plan is laid out and you give a lot of credit to people like J. B when Delk And Lou Trevino. Although he hit a batter and Jake Beekman. I mean, they got some very big outs to get this game to this point. They certainly did. Their their bullpen has been better than the White Sox bullpen, and that's why they find themselves in this position. Top of the order. Now Tim Anderson, two for four at an infield hit in the first and doubled in the second, has grounded out and fly it out since And the pitch and a breaking ball fouled off right side by Anderson. A very young White Sox team, both on the mound and amongst the position players very talented, but very young. And for many of them for most of them their first postseason experience. Only four of the 28 had played in the playoffs before this year. You want a fastball at the knees and story is out front. Sorry. It's a guy with 223 Major league saves again. He's been around a long time is pitched in a lot of different situations. And has made 11 postseason appearances over the course of his career. For the Tigers, Pirates, brewers and A's where he's been all over the place. There's a breaking ball, and it's fought off by Anderson and he loops it over the head of Estella and a shallow right for a base hit. There. It is right. The ninth hit first three postseason game. Didn't hit it hard, but it's a new record. And more importantly, it brings the tying run to the plate here in the eighth inning in the form of Yasmani Grandal, who hit a game one home run. Off. As the plot thickens. Anderson is being held on by Olsen at first as Grandal digs in Switch hitter batting for the left side. The shift is on for the A's Story of the set and a first pitch fastball is over the outside corner for a strike..

Thank you Write head or Lou Trevino was into the game now for the A's had a 3 86 tiara and 20 appearances during the season. 23 a third innings on Ly 16 hits allowed Walk. 10 struck out 26 64, Oakland Top seven and Trevino will start Jose Hombre you with a strike will face a brave James McCann. And Johanna Moncada 345 hitters. Trevi Toe is Trevino rather has a great a beer that he has brought to the mound. It took some work fires, both neck speech to a brave and it's foul tobacco into A little surprised when Delk didn't get another one. As clean as that last half inning was, I thought he'd be back out here for the seventh and again. Bob Melvin must obviously feel he's got enough guys that he trusts and I'm leaning towards that. Hendrix is available based on the fact that he made a move to Goto go to Trevino here in the seventh inning, but we'll find out Theo to tow a Bre U look out a fastball up about helmet Highball one. He certainly seemed convinced when we spoke to him earlier today that he would be available. Trevino is on the mound on his 29th birthday today, pitching in a winner take all game..

"Game. Well, how much quicker could a guy who's a starter like Montag's Get ready? I mean, he knows this is obviously a very unusual situation of the phone call says Get ready as fast as you can. I mean, he could accelerate the process. No doubt about it. You just wonder. Okay. The effectiveness of AH, pitcher who's used to starting a ballgame, getting ready with that. With that kind of urgency, But I tell you this match up right here favors the white sauce Magical against First pitch swinging, so no one you've gotta feel like there's just nothing that's going to speed magical up here and somebody that lets the ball travel as well as he does. Petite does not look like yes, that stuff. This could be another run scoring it and Lou Trevino is up a cz well for the AIDS, so he might be the put out the fire guy Montana's getting ready for the next inning. And the fire. I mean, maybe hit the ball hard from the moment the game began. There's the Owen and Mad Regala swinging ball popped up for the second baseman Stella on running the edge of the outfield. Grass will make the catch that y'all for the White Sox, but they add on a couple of runs and take a three to nothing lead to the bottom of the third. This is the American League wildcard Siri's on ESPN radio and the ESPN. What do you want to go out at all? I don't know what you think. Well, what have we done yesterday? "I wonder just your thoughts real quick on the way out about how Bob Melvin may manage the bullpen. In Game two. We saw how comfortable they were. We mentioned it again against left handed pitching. You've got Jake Deacon who did throw in Game one. I wonder if he tries to stick with right handed pitching, knowing that guys like when Duncan can get out for Yu Haven't seen Liam Hendriks get a whole bunch of guys yet. So just your thoughts on the managing, maybe of how you go into the bullpen beyond Chris Bassett in Game two. Yeah, I mean, I think they'll be pretty aggressive. You know, Obviously it is a do or die situation, so I don't think they're going to leave any bullets in the gun right that they're going to go as much as they can. I don't know that when delicate will be available, just given the fact that he threw two and two thirds innings in the first game of that serious, But if they need him for an hour or something with a couple of runners on and two outs, they could do that because he's been so good at stranding inherited runners this season. But, yeah, I would expect them to lean pretty heavily on guys like, you know, petite in Soria and even Lou Trevino, who warmed up. It didn't come into game one. You know, things got out of hand early might see some starters come in. I think certainly Mike Minor would be somebody that could come in there. Who knows? Night fires could be somebody that comes in at that point, but I think if it gets to a safe situation, and they think the matchups are good for Liam Hendricks to go more than one inning, it certainly would be something that you could see as well. I just feel for Ace fans. You know, they haven't. I think it's a six straight. James now in the postseason. They've lost if you want to call them Siri's or count them a serious you could, I guess, but you go back to those three wild card games and those are all one game eliminations. You just really want to see them at least get to a do or die situation in Game three. Give Bob Melvin a shot. Put the right guy in there to get the wind, But we appreciate the time today. Melissa will keep covering you and following you through the postseason, and hopefully it's a lot longer than just the next couple of days here. Yeah. Thanks for having me. I appreciate it at him. You win some ballgames. How's that for a leadoff spot deal On the other side. We're gonna get into a little bit of the NFL from this weekend. Little bit more of the NFL from this coming weekend, where the 40 Niners are going to see the Philadelphia Eagles. But how about another big game on the docket? Pat Mahomes against the New England Patriots. They got a little bit of Ah, insight from Bill Belichick. If you can call it inside, he actually did say a few things about Pappa homes in Andy Reid's offense. I think there's a lot of mutual admiration and mutual respect there between those two guys have been around for a long time. Also, Pat Mahomes is having a baby and the Twitter responses yesterday on the announcement of his his girlfriend or his fiancee. I guess they're getting pregnant is it was pretty funny. A lot of Lamar Jackson jokes in there, too, so we'll get a little bit from Bill Belichick. But on the other side as well as a little bit on my Tomlin and Mike Vrabel and the game for this weekend stealers and tightens where the Titans may not be back on the practice field until Saturday at the earliest. Could be Sunday, I guess for a A practice or a walk through whatever you want to call it ahead of week three. "That's the guy that i think all of us follow hello. Who's your catch partner. Josh tomlin on days that i don't bullpen or he's he's the best catch partner i've ever had why it's in the circle every time and sometimes i'll miss one low or up and i'll say my bad. He missed his one outside of my head and he's saying it's he's he's. He's that good with that. Who's who's the dude. That's like your you guys are heading to the ball bucket and like maybe maybe it's a day where tom's not available you know oh you're throwing with or excuse me who's the guy that you like nabo note you see him. Go into the bag to get a ball and you know he's going to be looking around and you're like no no in short. I think right now that guy's minter yeah is it just everywhere and hard and and he wants cutters two the left would you up. He messes around with different pitches to so obvious stuff so good where right i mean those hard and it moves a lot is it's just yeah i watch. I watch lou trevino and blake training catch with each other in oakland and i'm like i wouldn't even want any part lord of that. Watch that gave a catch dill no pass on both of that <hes> so a couple of things. We were talking to guys who are first chris. You're all stars their stories of how they were told you like. How were you informed that hey you're an all star. <hes> for museum in the clubhouse <hes> <hes> we were in new york and kind of getting ready for a game and <hes> sn it called a called the team meeting and <hes> i was the only additive because freddie in mukunu already been voted in but <hes> you know as kind of blown away because as much as you think you look at the stats and you look at the year and you think well i guess i guess i'll be there but i don't know i mean there's so much talent around the league that <hes> wouldn't be surprised. You didn't right <hes> sub to for a little bit yeah great starting the point starting point so i mean i it just we were in the clubhouse and then got to give a lot of hugs to the bullpen and position guys obviously catchers this year. I've kinda flopped between flowers and mccain and got to say that you know i really feel like i learned every single time out and got better. It's it's just kinda i wouldn't be i wouldn't be here without any of them right. Some good places a lot of runs to so. Was there ever a point where you're like all right. My phone hasn't rained like. I know what those numbers look like. Let's not fucking selves here. Are they see what i'm saying like. How does this work people. Am i going to is it. Is it via twitter or or how does this happen because you're clearly very humble and rightfully so you again process oriented so i understand the mindset but i also the understand. There's times where you're just laying in bed your. I'm really good winter. They going to let me know how good i am and just give me the nod like. Do i get to play ticket in the mail. There was never any of that <hes> come out a bit obviously of the confidence yeah. I mean every time you go out there. You're if you don't have the confidence. Oh you got this out. You're dealing your verisign big leaguers so <hes> it starts to mount and the numbers start to pile up and you're like just another notch..

"That's something something that you seem to be quite adept at took you a while to get to that joke. I'm impressed. I liked it up all on the fly had to get there but <hes> but we got there benchley <hes> what do you do. You have a favorite these two. I guess let's just start with that so i think the rays are a better team. I joke about their underlying the numbers. I think those actually are meaningful. The raise obviously have a lot of injury concern. At the moment they entered the season with three starting pitchers and two of them like smell smell the ratings cy young winner and glass now. Who is maybe the best pitcher in baseball. The first few weeks of the season <hes> are both injured and yanni tree knows who was quite good this year. He's been out for a couple of weeks now too so their staff. When tampa of course is maybe the most creative of any management team in baseball in terms of how they use as their staff but their staff is troubled. That question i have for you is lake is the oakland team that we're watching right now. That is close to the playoffs playoffs once again that is once again really hot in the second half. Are they actually good. I can't really tell they beat houston over the weekend but it seems like take everything besides matt chapman who has been excellent every year everything that went well for them. Last year has gone poorly this year and vice versa like stephen piscotty and chris. Davis have taken huge steps back chris. Davis has hit like baltimore chris davis for four months now but it's okay 'cause someone like marcus. Semi-in has developed into into one of the best shortstops in baseball and in the bullpen like lake china's been pretty horrible this year but liam hendriks has stepped in and been one of the best relievers in baseball and it's unclear like which consistently good players they have but i guess it's creating a serviceable product either way yeah and i have. I struggle with that too because i look at that team. Last year did sorta from the outside really look like chapman and the best bullpen in baseball not just the best bullpen but in baseball but an extremely <hes> deep bullpen but like they're not that deep this year i mean it's not just trying and who's taken a step back. It's lou trevino at a blue trevino. I think i said liu do not leave but i do this. Every time <hes> lou trevino have their areas are both in the mid to upper four right now and it's good as hendrix alex has been like you don't have that they're not as scary top to bottom as they were last year where like they went. They went with the the bullpen game in the wildcard house card game and honestly like i'd take their bullpen against i will take their bullpen last year almost any starting pitcher in baseball for for one game..

"Then it that's slowly lowered one hundred and twenty now it feels like if somebody's over hundreds like, oh my God. So the fact that he had a hundred eight pitches through seven innings you knew that Bob is going to be wrestling with this whole decision. I loved how direct and honesty was with them. And I appreciate the fact that and look they were talking about the no hitter and whether or not it'd be good to leave him in the game. You put someone on? He's also trying to win the game. It was close game. And he's got a pitcher whose pitch count is mounting. I thought Melvin handled this perfectly. What about you? Yeah. No, absolutely. Had Lou Trevino working warming up in the eight and then like trying into the ninth. So yeah, I think he's right one base runner, and he would have been out and you're right hundred and thirty pitches. Absolutely. Does not happen. These days in fact, since two thousand fifteen there's only been five games with hundred and thirty pitches in two of those were from Mike fires at his no hitters to others were no hit bid that went to outs in the ninth inning. And the other one was Clayton Kershaw onto game. When he struck out fifteen batters. So you're right. We grew up not even thinking of pitch counts, and certainly not thinking of one thirty as something that was an absolute hard line. But it is. And unless you're pitching a no hitter, you know, nobody goes that far anymore. So yeah, congrats to obviously, Mike fires. But congrats Bob Melvin for handling and letting them stay in the game and finish it off. And they asked me I did go look and wingo this morning, and they asked me the question is it worth it to leave a pitcher in in this situation? I said look if it's Chris paddock of the San Diego Padres. And he's too, you know, twenty one twenty two years old, and he has a night like that. It's pitch counts up there. No, you're grabbing him by the SCRUFF of the neck. You sit him in the corner. The dugout you're saying son, sit down and watch the last two innings for Mike. Fires you know, almost a decade in the big leagues at that age all the mileage on his arm. Absolutely. Give them a chance. And I you know to this day, for example, the cautionary tale of these situations is always been Johansen. Tanna since his manager. Terry Collins left him in the game to throw a ton of pitches to get the first no hitter in Mets history and Santana just wasn't the same after that. But I understand why you would leave a guy like fires a veteran guys been around a long time given the opportunity to finish that game. Yeah. He's thirty three years old. I don't. Think he's at any serious arm issues in his career. He's not a guy that throws ninety eight member last year. Sean nukem was one of those guys through one hundred thirty four pitches lost his no hitter with two outs in the ninth. And there's a lot of criticism about leaving him in in that game throw that many pitches..

"But I'm not a hundred percent sure they're going to implement that. Yeah. Hey, what would Lowry gone LaCroix gone? I'm just wondering aside from what they brought to you on the field. How much leadership did they have in the clubhouse and how much is that going to have to be replaced this year? Yeah. You know, what I think more? So. The clubhouse. We got you know, they were they were good performance for us. But you know, we have some younger guys here that are have leadership qualities, and I think, you know, one of the things that we allow guys kind of be themselves here and just because you're younger player doesn't mean you can't lead. If you have those qualities we let you do it. And you know, Matt Chapman's one of those guys, you know, Markelle Simeon there's been around with us for a while. He's he's one of those guys chat. Tenders a guy that's got some leadership qualities meddlesome. So somebody younger guys, I think in augment out. And then we do have quite a few veteran guys you're on top of it. So it's really not the leadership thing the one. I'm worried about those guys were really good players for us. And you know, they they performed on the field talking to Bob Melvin as opened up against the angels on Thursday. Of course, got the bay bridge series as long as the weather cooperates with us the bullpen. How good it was last. You lost a couple of guys. But he brought a couple of guys in. What do you expect advocate? Can can it be as good as it was last year? Well, you certainly hope so it was great last year. I mean up until I think the last week in the season. I don't know if we had a lead after the seventeen and we were undefeated as far as that went. And that's that's that's a hard standard to hold up to. But when you have like trying and you have Lou Lou Trevino right off the bat pretty good chance of closing games down. Now. You know, we brought him. So really really like him veteran veteran guy that had a good year last year old Samantha Rodney's here too. So, you know, use mirror petite, we have some some veteran guys down there. We still feel like the bullpens it can be a strength. You know, we started out with eighteen games in a row. So it's not like we don't need demeaning smart starters. You just can't cut guys. You know, when you have that many in a row. After five innings performing well, just to get your bullpen in the game because you can wear those guys out a hurry. So, you know, you still need to starting pitchers in my mind, I'm guessing if there's one silver lining to the trip being early earlier than opening day the over in Japan was the fact that fires gets knocked out after three used a lot of bullpen that game next year. Other game goes into extra innings use a lot of guys that game. I I'm sure it's nice to get those guys a little bit of rest before we get started up again. No doubt. I mean for two games, and we had two extra arms there. You're thinking. There's no way you can wear your bulletin out in here. We are in the second game. And I'm going man who do we have to go to after this? So you're exactly right. It did tax us some and and I think. Kinda shows us that it starting pitchers pitching will never go out of of in vogue in the fact that you're going to need guys to give innings over the course of the season. So you know, that that showed us right away that you can get taxed really early on talking to Bob Melvin speaking of pitching Lazardo just give us a little scour report on them for for people who haven't seen him. And then when might you expect them? Well, ninety eight ninety five to ninety eight on or plus plus breaking bona plus changeup and a great command and great presence and a lot of confidence. So, you know, they're they're guys that you know, you look forward to getting and other guys that you can't wait to get. So he he is one of those guys. He's going to be a special special guy for us. We'll probably be conservative with him. It's a little bit of a must strain in his shoulder. And then we're gonna shut them down from throwing for four weeks. So then we'll have to build them back up. But hopefully that that will take care of it. And then we'll get him at some point. You know, you know, later in the first half. Hopefully, and then you know, at that point. We don't really have to worry about an innings limit on autumn either for for a young guy. If he started with us, that's probably something that would come up at some point in time. So, you know, hopefully, that's not the case. Hey, Bobby, you think Matt Chapman's prime to be one of the next wave of superstars in the game. I think he's probably already there to an extent and has a chance to get a lot better. I mean defensively I it's pretty special in. You know, you look at his numbers in the second half. He's OPIC's over a thousand you know, at the plate. He's got powered all fields. I mean, he's just one of those guys that that you're probably gonna talk about in the MVP conversation, Tom. So we're really excited about what this guy can do. And and I think he's close to being there. Even though the surprise is second you almost take it for granted. Don't you like any ball hit that way? He's gonna get it. I don't care how hard to play is. It reminds me a little bit of JT snowbo- first base with the giants. Like any ball? Does. It is way or any ball. That was thrown his way he was going to get it. And even if it was difficult, and he didn't get it. You were shocked that he didn't get it. I have that same feeling about Chapman anything. That's it his way expect no matter what bounce it takes goes to find his glove. And then get the guy to first base. Yeah. Even if it's not hit his way, it seems like comes up with some of those balls. I mean, you'll get falls over it. You know in the whole shortstop that when they're hit off the bat, you're thinking, there's no way and he ends up getting to them. Try sneaking on down the line autumn two. That's pretty tough to do because you can play really deep because of his his arm strength, which allows them to go out more calls than anybody else. Does it before it? Let's go Bob if we get this bay bridge series in that'd be good. Then you get the break on Wednesday. And then you have the the angels for four and obviously Mike trout signs the brand new contract. I would imagine in your mind like the rest of us that if you're going to give that kind of money to somebody Mike trout is about the cleanest guy out there without a doubt. "At all. But he's going to allegedly get a lot of value here from his defensive prowess. And while defense is a big help. I think this is one of those things where at least in my estimation coda tries to hard to be cutting edge. I think the coda tries to hard to incorporate these fielding metrics in there. And when we look at fielding on a year to year basis, there's not a great correlation defensive runs saved is done by hand. And. You know, ultimate zone rating UCR sort of a different formula. It's kind of something where there's not a whole lot of year to year correlation, not a whole lot of consistency to it. I think fielding is a tough thing to pin down. And I think it's very scary that Prokhoda incorporates fielding to the degree that it does in its projections. So you move down the board here a little bit. And you're going to team like the Chicago Cubs. Chicago Cubs very very good offensive team but Conan not a huge fan of their offensive projections. But really doesn't like their defense and has the cubs down for eighty two and eighty I got updated Susan win totals at Caesar's texted me from Atlanta and yesterday, Chicago was ninety two in wins ninety two ten games off of what this coda projection is. So these Prokhoda projection systems are going to move the wind toodle market or going to, you know, create the landscape for the win total market out there in the offshore betting market. And I think that people really overvalued. What these numbers look like that's not to say that I have any sort of projection system, and I think is better or anything like that. But as you go up and down the list here. I mean, you can see some things that do appear to be flaws. I mean, the Mets with the same number of wins the nationals. Well, I love the Mets starting rotation. I think it's very very good. I Mickey Callaway Dave island or doing a fantastic job with that pitching staff with that rotation. But being a division winner with eighty nine wins scoring just six hundred ninety nine runs, basically Dakota projections. I can't see that. I think that's a very very lofty estimate for the Mets. And also to you know, look at Oakland. We'll get the Mets, you know, the Mets did pick up Edwin d as and their bullpen will be a lot better. But looking specifically here at Oakland Oakland has a top five bullpen a major league baseball. It is any elite group anchored by Blake training, who's one of the best relief pitchers in major league baseball. I like Joaquim soya they spent a good bulk of their free resource. On him. You know, I like Lou Trevino kinda pitched very well. Ran out of gas in the second half. Oakland, got some very very good relief arms Fernando Rodney, you know, still a solid type of guy. Maybe he's not a closer type. But still a solid reliever. I think Prokhoda falls short projecting bullpens..

"Oh and tuck as three dominant young left handed pitchers all under control by the as for a number of years to come. Now would be a great top of the rotation if healthy then the as have guys like fires who's who's in on a two year old right now. They've also got Daniel Mendon who's performed well, you know, looks like a class back into the rotation starter. Frankie Montas throws awful hard condemn finally impress. He's been a little inconsistent. But when he's on he's on as you mentioned in Chris Bassett as also in the mix Blackburn is coming back from a lot of injury issues as well. So there's a there's a lot of guys in that mix. If the season started tomorrow would probably be fires and Montas Bassett, and then maybe either blocked burn or Lazardo if they wanted to start the season with him. But hopefully by the second half of the season, they can have Mnaya Lazardo fires. Mangan, and then maybe one of those other guys Montas Bassett or or Blackburn to plug in there at the in the fifth spot. Yeah. Just makes his team so dangerous and the lineup. So will the pitching rotation. So deep later down the line either next year, or you know, even later this year. Yeah, you mentioned Andrew Triggs as well. He's coming back from injury. The as have have now said they're looking to move him to the bullpen. I think they're worried about the the strain on his on his arm with the work that a starter does. So it looks like they're going to try to try to bring him back as a reliever rather than have him in the in the starter mix. Yeah. I mean, let's go to the bullpen now. I mean, it should be pretty simple, actually. But then some arms that bullpen, man. The guy that really impressed me last year was Lou Trevino just the way he came in and shut games down before it was even his before. It was even they even got to try, and then you bring in a guy like sore and for Nando Rodney who's been everywhere in his career. And you know, if you have that many arms in the bullpen you become lethal and on playoffs and the only problem with this as damn at that point was they decided to go full on bolting game. And I'm pretty sure Hendrix started the game and became eight go. But I mean, Louis Trevino, really impressed me. A Blake Trenton emerged as an elite closer a top five closer in baseball my opinion last year. So kind of breakdown how this bullpen will finish going. I mean, we could even do six seven eight nine if you had to. Yeah. There's there's there's a lot of strong arms in the pan in the really relied on that. Penn last year, you know, at the end of the year every no one in the starting rotation was someone who had even been in the system to start the year. You know, the there were so many injuries so many problems with starting rotation. They had to go out, you know, in bringing guys like, Edwin Jackson and Trevor K hill and bread Anderson. You know, and go out and acquire Mike fires, you know. So so they ended up with a completely patchwork rotation and because of that they really had to rely on the bullpen to tremendous job to to get them. You know, so the postseason. Fortunately, Blake training who was originally drafted by the as and then was traded to the nationals and then traded back to the as really emerged as one of the best relievers in the game last year. I mean, he finished the season with an era under one in. So I mean trying and I think gave up maybe seven or eight or runs the entire year. So he was absolutely lights out the closer. And before they went out and started acquiring a bunch of veteran relief arms a late in the season. They had called up Lou Trevino who really as you said served, you know, as a shutdown setup man so between Trevino and try, and they were they were just you know, they were just shutting everyone out in the eighth the ninth inning for most of the season the as hadn't had lost a game that they lead heading into the eighth inning..
