But aubrey's dad that's a good question I think they do. I think this is a little bit of a nervous game for aggies. And yeah i mean it is different when you play in the games a mile house stadium. I think i speak for itself. There is definitely a difference. But i also believe when you are as conditioned as these athletes are. It should not be a big deal. So i am not thinking. That's going to factor the game. Well thanks so much for the call and you guys take care of yourself. How 'bout Mike in texas a hey my go right ahead. Lou Holtz talks Notre Dame and more

"Lua alluded to you as being a builder and again i go back to the interview which you had here in the studio with us and the obvious question from a person when you They asked you about the rumors you going to. Usc and you said usc is one of the three best jobs. And i said wait a minute. I know notre dame is one of the best. What's the third best job. And you said the one that i get and it turned out to be usc but the university of south carolina. And and i'm just wondering when you reflect back about taking over that program. Why did you take over such a struggling program. And what is it is allowed. Lou holtz everywhere. He has gone to be able to build success. What i foresee a we will not arrive. I think we had three offensive linemen on scholarship is all we had. It did have a quarterback and didn't have a running back to his per se. But you know you grin there you you just you try to fundamental you. Try to do the things that we talked about. Just you know. Build build the football team. And i have gone to six different situations in college and never inherited a winner and went to bow game no later in the second year with matter of fact after going on eleven we finished seventeenth a country next year and beat ohio state in a bowl game following here i think we finished loveth in the country. Beat state again on january one. But it's not because guy it's Coach it's all about the people. If team i mean it's about coaches and players. All all really tried to play their road and believe that you can do something. We read great fan support in south carolina. We were below eligible this year. We'd basically accepted a bowl bid and then of course after a little probably had with trump said in my last football game we decided not to go to a bowl game. I would've liked to vendor micro in a bowl game and yet at the same time within hayes and i'll have the same legacy Last was in clemson was involved. Refer also that's not a great legacy to have necessarily but it's a good football team. Many people coming back in. Like steve spurrier command. And you know he. He's a guy that likes to win. And i think he can win earlier. I believe that in the bud by heart. I think he's an excellent coach. I think the players will respond well to them. And i think we took a the longest losing program the country and took it to a bowl game and he'll take it from there to the championship level when you talk about coaching today And i think about francs being fired after he won nine games and i think about the expectations that go along ty willingham of course sopa but notre dame in his first year wins his first eight and then what has happened to him recently as well. What are the expectations of football coach at a major program today. Well i've been figured that basically very very impatient but you know they. They want instant success. One instant gratification and want to go the top. That the trina goes to the university of louisville inherits a very very good football team. From coach smith went onto michigan state. Now goes between things that a tremendous job but You know feel air. And he has those great athletes. They have great success. Urban meyer. who. I hired at university of notre dame you know he goes to Utah has instant success and everybody sitting there saying well. Hey he can do it let. Let's go get that guy that can do it here that we can win immediately will You know having code having smith there your quarterback as a pretty good asset to have it set about where somebody also had success. And i am sure they they look at it and say well gee they came in and they were down and all of a sudden they one. That's what we want to do and everybody all the fans wanted to two things who's going to be the new coach and he will be the next quarterback i. It's unbelievable i. i don't care you. You want to become unpopular to hurry. Go for being the second team quarterback to the i team the anything too is if you think about it and i was thinking about notre dame just the other day what should be their expectation level and i know the obvious as well to win championships but if you look at the landscape of football today lou there's a lot of teams that are able to get outstanding athletes that don't have the same requirements to get maybe to get into school There's a lot of schools have reputations of putting players into the pros and what have you so having said all of that. What should be the expectation at notre dame today as far as their season and their teams year in year out when further. Joyce hired may at the university of notre dame. He said. I wanna talk to you about a couple of things. Basically not negotiable. These are not negotiable university. Notre dame we are need understand. This now isn't even before i was ever offered the job at you. Know we we. We will not redshirt. We will not take transfer from junior. College will not take a transfer from another school against need search chain core curriculum classes for years of english. Three years of math through calculus at center players are going to miss practice because of late classes or or or labs or tutors or things along that line. The players are going to live on campus. We are going to have great facilities. You have nothing to do with the discipline but athlete on campus We don't pay a whole lot You're not allowed to president of the university. Notre dame was the rule when say they gave the president rates once that they could give me a raise anyone on all that and he said with the we're expecting to compete for a national championship at least once every three or four years and I didn't find anything wrong with ed. And we did the head it. I think that should be their expectations. Not necessarily this year even next year. But i do think They expect Charlie wise to compete for the national championship. And i think he will. The same things are saying about notre dame they said about whenever procedure went there years ago. They said it. When i was there i remember my first year recruiting at notre dame. My aunt had us fifty eight to sixty year before. I got there in their last football game on national television and You go into a home to recruit a young man that have all these That have all these articles in there. About how Notre dame can't win anymore and the schedules to tough. There's all this. And there's all that. And i just don't believe that i i think you know. The sec schedule's pretty tough When i was at university dame might think at fifty four percent of games ever coach there were against a top twenty five football teams. But that's part of notre dame you play the best you know. We played washington when they're really good. We played tennessee. We played texas We we we played Miami florida played. Florida state You just that's just the way you did it at notre dame and I don't think it's any different now. I might be a little bit down right now but yeah. I think it's going to be fine but lou. Isn't it a little bit different. In the sense. That i used to think of notre dame and you probably going into a home where you know it was. I want this kid. The kid's gonna sign right there. It was like with john wooden at ucla. I mean john recruiting because everybody wanted to come and play for john wooden at ucla during those particular years but now the competition it. It's almost like well. We've got a pro passing program so if you're an outstanding quarterback you're going to go to this score that school i mean isn't the the mystique oh most of notre dame and not to their own detriment or fall but isn't it a little bit perceived differently today might be but i don't think necessarily it should be. I mean on tv every saturday. One time when i said notre dame we had fifty seven players active in the nfl. The next was penn state with thirty nine and third with southern cal with thirty eight But we we had to work hard. Recruit again we. We found uphill struggle. But here's the different. We could go to california and would we went after navigate. It was us usc or ucla. When would end attack between us. Texas tech today and you went into florida as a youth. Florida state miami and florida. You went into nebraska to be between you and the university of nebraska. You could go anywhere in the country and you would have legitimate chance to recruit the best athlete in that state but you would have to use the beat. The home state and you didn't always do that but when they start talking about well. Nfl i want this type of program. Notre dame's not a four year decision. Support here decision. What do you do in your football's over guarantee you're gonna play in the nfl with china education. You'll get what are you gonna learn. And are you going to be better prepared to go in there. You know i was watching Tonight on tv On some sports show where they had the ten major mistake officials made and one of them was grown bettas called tails and the guy said hatch. And i had to laugh because a whole time as notre dame the first thing i said the locker room before the game was we will call tales. We always called. This was a game. But i just think that You're still a forty year decision. Not a four year decision. You talk about the only thing that's going to change it from where you are today to where you'll be five years from now the books you read the people you meet in a dream a dream and the baby. You're gonna meet university in our day and they're going to be the ones that are going to be illness companies and being. Ceo's and they're going to be the leaders that those are the people you're gonna come in contact with and then you get him on campus. Let them talk to your athletes now. The guy that doesn't feel comfortable in that environment isn't gonna get isn't gonna fit well notre dame anyway and now there were always people that didn't want the discipline did want the the challenge. Academically didn't want to have to work that hard on their academics guy that they won't be interested in the university of notre dame necessarily but one thing i used to laugh about was you would read. You would read these top twenty two football players in america. What schools air considered and other day. It'd be listed on about eighteen oven. Maybe seven of them. We were recruiting because we couldn't get in school academically. But they would always put notre dame was one of their schools Florida not because it made them look good so to speak and I think notre dame will get back. I really do because it's a national school a special school. One of the thing that i think is the lou holtz legacy when it comes to football in. It's almost like parenting. In a sense. You mentioned about urban meyer. I think a barry alvarez a host of other coaches you must feel awfully proud of the the legacy of lou holtz from the coaches that went on from underneath year wing onto other programs either as assistance or successful head coaches as well. I've always felt that. I learned this from woody. Hayes have an obligation to prepare your coaches to become head coaches. I'd always explain why we did things and how we did it. the philosophy at center. I think we've made it look simple that everybody would come in and they go. I can do that. I wanna be head coach. But i went down. Visit very alvorada in preparation for the bogue. Gabi speed come down and one time we had about. I don't know maybe a sixty some former graduate assistants were either in major college or professional that had been graduate assistant said many people gone on u. p. care coach for me at the university of arkansas. We we started him out You know monte kiffin coach for him in the defense coordinator tampa bay et cetera. Just you know it's just so many coaches you enjoy it and that's one of the reasons why you wanna talk to me. Now's not because. I prepare them but because of the contribution they made our success but not mind. There's there's their contribution to my success is far greater mike. Entre bution to there's

"Goes the former college football coats. Lou hopes Lou Holtz will always be okay with me because he coached to South Carolina Gamecocks for six years, dropping clues. Bonds to stockings. Gamecocks, Dammit! Alright, looted a tow three. That's home Columbia, South Carolina to Metro's Everybody listening to us on Hot 139 right now. Game. Southpoint Gamecocks as my wife's All mama, But Donkey today does not discriminate right now there is a debate on whether or not college football should come back this year because of covert 19 greedy ass schools. Greedy offense don't care about those kids. They just want to make their money. Alright, that human am Ula. Okay if the 2020 and football season is cancelled The financial toll of Corona virus could cost them. $4 billion OK for 1,000,000,000. Would it be alright? Trust me? The only reason she really wants the football season to start is to make money. That's it. Nothing more. Nothing less A student athletes. I'm sure wanna play because some of them have dreams of going to the NFL so they can change day life and make some money like the answer is you only got a four year window in school, so I don't know how that impacts your eligibility if you have to cancel the season because of Corona virus, but Not like those kids are getting paid. OK? I really wonder what coaches and athletic directors are saying to the student athletes right now to make them wanna play are encouraged them the play because those young men are stupid, Please. Somebody hit me up on social media and let me know what the coaches and athletic directors of telling the student athlete because I really want to know what they're saying. They encourage him to play. Those student athletes know you on Ly want him to play because college football bring so much money to the score's All right. Most power five schools, on average, make nearly half of their total operating revenue from football, So I really want to know what they are telling these kids to motivate them to play because other than Just the love that those student athletes have for the game of the scholarship, which will be taken away. I'm sure just because you know a cancer to season of the Corona bars are a shot at the NFL. It's not those reasons. Washington go out and risk their health and potentially their life. Well, whatever. Lou Holtz was saying yesterday on Fox News that was a master class on what not to say the motivate players to play During the Corona virus pandemic. Let's hear you're saying they should play. I think they should play. But then again, that's why I say you understand no player you want to play. If you have a problem. If you have a NASCAR problem, I feared that predators up and yet Virgil imager, legitimate reasons or what, but absolutely don't play. The rest of you want to play? Let's go play. I think that we shut everything down for six months. I'm going crazy about big court. I think other paper titled Let's Move on with their life when they stormed Normandy. They do that They're going to be cashed in a big rig 2% of the people that can they go to the emergency room go for covert. 19 2% of it is worn down, but young people build. They say it's like kids where they say they're going to die. See Luis's 83 years old. He's living every moment every day like it could be his last. As he should could. He might be what That doesn't mean. These kids have to if I worried about getting sick and possibly dying, and I'm not ready to risk that for football, you're not going to get me to play by comparing college football. The D day. Alright, more than 4000 Allied troops lost their lives in the D Day invasion. Okay, though, Normandy thing, Alright for 1000. I am not a historian. I am not the highest grade of weed in the dispensary, but I don't think college football is important as the storming of Normandy. Am I missing something here? Please let me know if I am war versus double a football to things that are usually just done for profit. Okay? All of the company's profit from war Just like all these schools, profits from football. There's big money behind war. There is big money behind college football Personally, I don't know if you need either, All right, but I know people like their money. And you know, Lou Holtz said. There is risk everything true, but you should take calculated risk. All right, that rash ones, all right, sending those kids out to play just because you are afraid of the money you're going to lose seems rash to me because the only thing you are really calculating is the amount of money you're going to lose. Yes. What the people getting paid not really taking no risk because they're not the ones on the football field. They're not the ones that are potentially spreading the virus to each other. OK, they're not the ones who Of the underlying conditions and they might get sick and die because y'all wanted to send him out there to play football just so y'all can make money and see double for Listen. Hey! Call the student athletes out there if you want it. Go for take a risk. Don't always play it safe or you die wondering, you know what may have happened are if you listen to lose You might just die. All right. Please give Lou Holtz the sweet sounds of Hamilton's ur Doggy.

"That a lot of people enjoyed Nitsa cool story because a fan of the show did it and then next thing they know they're looking up and will smith is producing the project with his production company and for many years here Stu gods we have wondered we root for Will Smith we like will Smith Will Smith was so popular in the movies at least in part because he was so likable his his performance as Ali was an amazing bit of acting he's an enormously talented human being who was dominating music and movies at a very young age and over the last ten to fifteen years. A lot of bad movie choices his career he's going back to some of the franchise hits like bad boys the place it's very hard to age in creativity. It is very hard to continue to reinvent yourself and age gracefully, and so he's going to an old standard I remember Bill Simmons longtime ago got wrote a great article. At back at grantland about the will, Smith formula to how it is you become a movie star the choices that you make. Because at the time he was making the right ones with creatures and things in the movies that you need to sustain yourself. But now he's going back to his hits. He's tried this ORC thing with Netflix a Mike Ryan is pumping. Out because there's been a hockey goal and he's able to gamble during the show, all of a sudden for entertainment porpoises only. Breast. That's right does do. Grab your breakfast burritos eleven. Am Eastern time hockey. Way Too. Early. But a playoff game at eleven am hockey playoff Gabe because there was a five overtime game yesterday that puts this game to eleven o'clock this morning. We are feeling very good about the Carolina hurricanes in the first period and for the game and they're playing without Mr game seven just Williams but luckily. Want. You. Literally don't need Mr Game Seven for sixty two games in this series to caress you gotta stop to caress to concede more like. Aren't. So if you don't understand what's happening right now, I do not blame you because you. Off grabbed the microphone and I All. The Stanley Cup playoffs stewed. What is better than? Between. Lightning and the Columbus Blue Jackets, live from Toronto postponing the Carolina Hurricanes in Boston Bruins also Toronto I know this is weird dude but I am I looking like it clean she. Had this. Big Old Carolina does from Joel Edwards and Mr Game what. That was a clean sheet that surfer guy far away from the microphone said, and I said I was going to explain to the audience what was happening now I didn't actually want to elaborate on surfer character who stands far away from the MIC analyzing hockey. I, just wanted to break down for the audience. What hockey was because if you watch ESPN, you might not know. Damn. Shame. Remember Berry. No. Rose in the NHL Hockey Team my God wanted time do but now my mouth is salivating zip. I'm about to take a bite from fresh the beach dude. We're not go that thing when you're joe knows it, it's about to eat something sour both my every time. On? My Duties. So you guys. This is the height of degeneracy I would say in high. Money. But then I'm glad everybody chill out. Glad we all collectively made it through this whole thing body. About to bite into this, Evita, my bodies obviously preparing me for. We never know how hard you. Talk. South. I'm not even sure how popular tart is a sort of. Profile, do you ever get a nice of you to stony? Oh tart and saw get tart. It's textual delight. Really, is crunch with the soggy, whitefish? Man. Concede, put it on put it on the poll. Please Tony is seven. With. Stone a textural delight. Yes or no? Because I'm guessing most of the audience even know what toast on is Mike I know south Florida does but does. That Thank you I was talking to Mike Wasn't talking. He's gotta stay character to the periods of. All right. So what's your? Take. On this love. To come through I am a little alarmed. Okay. At Eleven thirty playoff hockey. The reasons again, if you did not catch it is because there was a five overtime game last night in which I think. Tampa. Tampa withstood eighty-five shot is that the number of? The Blue Jackets withstood stood in I'm just learning about this blue jackets goalie but do the college football season is incredible do okay. So basically, game went. So long last night that they simply had to cancel the night playoff game between Boston and Carolina, and so we have the delight of watching that game right now live again, the NHL you might not have heard has successfully and somehow quietly created a bubble as well but we have not noticed it quite as much because people ignore playoff hockey even though playoff hockey is the single most amazing thing anything anywhere in sport. Let's go my private jet is going to fuel itself. Does he spn presently have anyone other than Steve Levy and Barry Melrose talking about hockey we have just two guys or do we have a third guy somewhere a third person somewhere that's down hockey on our network that doesn't have TV rights. "Got Has, fallen in love with a Cleveland Indian. We will get to that in just a second but before we get to that, I want to wonder aloud with the audience because. sports can be a relationship that the customer has with his sports team. It could feel emotional he or she has with their sports team where you feel like York in a bit of a relationship I don't know how many of you in the audience are dating or how many of you even remember dating. It's been so long since people could safely date, but I want you to imagine the relationship with sports right now being someone that you're dating and you can't figure out why things are just a note off. It's not just that I'm watching NBA, Game Stu gods, and they look like really evolved video game sometimes like even better as realistic as our video games are. Now there are times I am watching the television and the absence of things make it so that I feel like I'm watching graphic animations instead of actual human being this can't be it can't be happening. Just me there have to be times, put it on the poll Tony Please at Lebatardshow. Are There Times that you're watching NBA? Games and the graphics make you feel like the human beings are video game characters right now but last night. Sports to got in south Florida for a long time. have. Felt a little. Sad. But what I've gotten from my last two viewing experiences has been a little extra said one was watching the Marlins play a minor league stadium last night with no fans like the middle of Buffalo it just it felt so minor league and keep in mind. This is a team that has felt so minor league for decades the Buffalo Blue Jays great game though I mean Lewis Brinson almost said, hey, big to run shot to keep the marlins you know in contention. Thank you still got for nothing, but the Buffalo Ballpark is incredibly sad and not just because it's in buffalo it just very minor league. But when I was watching and I know this happened I know South Florida is going to recognize what I'm talking about during the Heat Pacers game there were audio difficulties at one point and all you heard was lifelong broadcaster eric read in his distinctively nasal voice clearly broadcasting from a Sad janitors closet somewhere because all the other ambient sound got eliminated and it was just Eric Reid's voice and it was distort Stugatz where I'm listening to him talk about you know what should be an exciting game but all of the elements are gone the ambient sound the fans, his fellow broadcaster, whatever it is, they need to pipe into, make it sound like he's not an janitors closet somewhere far away from the action. was just him talking into a microphone and it made me so impossibly said because my relationship with sports is a note off and I'm grateful that it's just a note off because in that moment I was reminded Oh, wait I had already changed my expectations for how said all of this is I'm enjoying that STU gods and my father Pablo Tori or in a virtual crowd everyone allowed in because. Why wouldn't everyone be allowed in? There are no fans allowed at the game that they need to bombard us with stimuli what has replaced the home experience of t shirt cannons flying t shirts into the crowd is just an assortment of Stimuli. Tell me Mike did you were you fell asleep at halftime so I don't even know if you bet he pacers game. Yeah, me is me eight, forty five. Halftime what we in Spain Chris did you did you have that reaction to eric read when the sound fell I've gotta think all over America. This is happening with the regional broadcasts where you're reminded as we try to get something that feels normal. There are so many reminders that were in the apocalypse like that make appearances to remind us when sound blows out when someone's coming to us from A. Janitors closet when the Marlins aren't playing a home game and are playing a team that is homeless and they're the home team in buffalo where they don't have major, League Baseball and the park is empty. So when a guy comes up in a dramatic moment and it's Francisco. Cer- Valley who we found his Venezuelan. I thought he was Italian we all did off to a great start with three homers. Thirty four somehow I thought he broke into the League at thirty four with the Yankees. God. That was I. Don't know that I've ever had an experience quite like this. Okay. The situation in that Marlins game is thus. They're down four one in the night. The Blue Jays relievers wild. Runner on the Blue Jays reliever then walks another guy on a three to curve ball. That is the single dumbest pitch. I've ever throw I've seen thrown in the major league. He could've allowed a home run. What you can't allow is that guy to get on base so that Savelli does what he did in the next at Bat, which is three Oh pitch he's hacking and nothing says distort be an apocalyptic future like backup catcher Francisco Savelli hacking. Three. Oh during a pandemic and he hits a home run to tie the game four four and I don't believe that anyone in that. Sad ballpark actually enjoyed that home run they all wanted to go home because baseball is sad and dystopia and right now and he hit a home run to extend the game. This has to be happening all over sports. Guys have you felt this where you get sad watching a game because something reminds you wait. A minute nothing about what's happening now is normal. Yeah. It happened to me as exciting as the PGA championship was over the weekend and it was very exciting. You had a moment on the sixteenth hole where and we and we discussed this a Monday where column Morikawa hit one of the great shots in fact, they had it right number one all time greatest shot the history Garay this while shot and the history of golf and there was no. One there was no sound. There was no celebration. It was just the shot gymnasts described the shot there was no reaction to the shot and yes, I've had those moments and I'm struggling what to do here would sports because of the lack of fans but certainly, yes, it is off beat but I'll take it for now Dan I will take I understand that they'll take it but one of the things that has to happen and I know everyone That is likes to God's Love Jim Nance on their broadcasts, his style. We need to replace it with Gus. Johnson. During these times like during these times, an emergency replacement situation where you can't get stayed starch golf announcer guy doing the show in boat shoes, you need to go get somebody who's going to give the enthusiasm that you're not getting anywhere else I. It's so funny that you bring that up because I was thinking as much as I love Nance with a crowd calling golf in that moment with no crowd the guy I wanted calling that teashop for more Kaur was Kevin Harlan. That's driver right between the eyes like give me something you know how much of you miss. You Miss Kevin Harlan. Did you even realize how much you missed Kevin? Harlan put it on the poll Tony Did you realize how much you've missed Kevin Harlan. Though, idea, it's one of the. Things that happened to me throughout this pandemic that I had no idea how much i Miss Kevin Harlan until I started to listen to the Kevin Harlan again that guy is one of the few announcers that does not eat fat he doesn't need any sound behind. You just need Kevin Harlan on the broadcast and what you have is excited you don't need fans in the background just because he goes and he gets the enthusiasm his nether, region? It's like it's it's coming. It's coming up from his undercarriage. Nance doesn't have it. Their man's doesn't have anything in the undercarriage he can't go and get something extra. Few. Very few can it's true. We we come back with God's love affair with a Cleveland. Indian out of nowhere next. So, finally French authorities have opened a murder investigation after thirty year old corpse was found in a basement during renovations of a Parisian mansion abandoned since the mid eighteenth century that sold for about forty one point two, million dollars. The UFC heavyweight title is on the line when steep Oh. St Pain. I would out. So hung up on the second day the last name that as steep as the easy part..

"Verify I called him. Said you gotta draft while is coach. That's phenomenal what a great story. We can't thank you enough for your time. We've been a longtime admirers of of the job that you've done and not only as a football coach but as a leader Uh and somebody that's had a lot of impact and influence a lot of coaches around the country. So thank you so much we appreciate it. Thank you sometimes talk about my son at Louisiana Tech. He went five four gave the railways eight and one they lost detected and he says he never gave game for five different teams. That's a little bit hard without. He's doing a great job. I think you did say Steve Court here. I'm getting ready to have drake weapon. He's been very kind. It is beautiful wife away thank Christie. Who set this all up? And you did this Hey coach the waters on us. Get the floating light water with a Lebanese eleven. Eight hundred basically coast. Thank you. Well there you go book The Great Lou Holtz who I told everybody before the Internet. Promise you'RE GONNA laugh. I promise you're GONNA learn and Did a little bit of both on this one. Yeah he he's he's a great storyteller but even better team team building. I think you hear him going to public speaking mode when he's talking to us. I think he was definitely trying to inspire us. But those that were listening I think the main main takeaway that I got from him was talking about building a winning team in bouncing back from that disappointing season in South Carolina in being resolute and steadfast in his belief that he could turn turn it around. I think a lot of times when we're in business or coaching you. You do have a tendency to have some self doubts when things don't go according to the plan but he talked about how you dig yourself out of it no one really cares. They're not gonNa feel sorry for you so you got to look inward To find the answers I think those lessons the things that Trans Transcend just force. I think those things are life lessons to anyone can use. I thought it was fascinating. About what kind of offense. And what key things one if he were to be coaching today That was a great great conversation. and to me Really kind of goes into what's taking place at the NFL level right now. Where if you look at the the top quarterbacks in the League All of them have the ability to extend plays all of them have the ability to be at least a threat as a runner. which is a forcing you to account out for them? which really goes back to the old option days right? I mean you had count for the quarterback as runner. Maybe not in the volume that they did back in the Notre Dame days But I think that makes life so much more difficult on the defensive side of the ball when you have to count for the quarterback it definitely does it evens up the advantage on on defense. You typically have a plus plus one advantage because the quarterback isn't a runner so gives you the freedom of us two extra defender in the box to stop the running game well now when the quarterback is a viable threat. It it evens out the plainfield and it makes it more difficult to defend the running game. You have to commit that guy to make sure someone on the quarterback someone who's always on running back and we have seen Zien how. It is really kind of revolutionized to college game. But now in the pros Santa with Lamar Jackson. Some of the other guys when your quarterback is a runner it just changes the dynamic namic and so I certainly can understand why do host was a big proponent of having an athlete a quarterback having an offense that has option principles to it while still spreading. Get Out and doing it. I just think it's funny to hear him talk about his evolution from single-wing to split t the veer too I formation for Mason option to spread and all those other things that the testament of a good coaches being able to be adaptable and flexible and for him to have so much knowledge college of so many different office of skews it to really put them into practice. Kind of speaks volumes about his reservoir of knowledge. No doubt also enjoyed join the The little nugget there on Randy Moss best high school. How about that earlier? That he's ever seen what could have been there at Notre Dame Think about the impact. He would have had their so anyways. A fascinating dating conversation with coach Lou. Holtz hope you guys enjoyed it as much as we have. If you've missed any of other coaching interviews go back you can find them. Just go through Going Apple podcast asks look at our previous episodes. "And now move the sticks with Daniel Jeremiah and Bucky Brooks everybody. What's going on DJ A. and Bucky here for move the sticks and bucks something? We've really focused on this fall kind of a theme for us. We've really taken kind of one episode a week and we've devoted to we conversation with a coach that that really selfishly. We wanted to talk to and we wanted to learn from and and this is a name that came over and over again in the coaches. We've talked about Out as as someone who's had influence on their coaching career. So I think this was a conversation. We definitely had to have one of the best coaches if not the best coach in cultural history and so to be able to pick his brain and to really find out what he believed the core traits that you had to have to build a championship program things that he passed along to coaches along onto way. How you bounce back from four seasons having the opportunity to sit down for fifteen to twenty minutes with one of the legends of the game and just find out all all things about building a championship program? I think it was invaluable for us. Yeah I promise during this conversation a couple of things are gonNA happen. You're gonNA learn something You're GONNA learn something about football also. Oh could translate over into business. You're going to hear some great stories because there is no better storyteller than Lou Holtz. You've got coaches. He's helped develop guys like Pete Carroll guys like Urban Meyer got their starts under Lou Holtz in You're going to hear all. About those young men. In the early stages of their career and whether or not coach Holtz foresaw all what was coming in their future all the success that they would have so. I do hope you enjoy this conversation. there will be a little background noise. Just giving you a heads up their coach Holtz doing this interview in a restaurant but kind enough to give us plenty of his time so I do hope you enjoy our conversation with Lou Holtz. I couldn't be more excited than coach. Holtz joining us right now. It coach we're GonNa get to your coaching career and philosophies and the cultures you help build but I want to go back to Lou Holtz as a football all players. You've got to give me a quick. We're scouts we scouted the NFL. So we want you to give us a scattered reporter Lou Holtz football player or the best way. I could come up with Tim Brown when the highest but I would do with it in the offensive win. It in gymnast was television by the time he said if I interviewed before the announced widow. I said that's fine question. They asked me with the whole. Did you ever dream about within. I said Jim this on national TV. I did that all all the time I wanted to win three. I've been the first player from Kent State. Never been the first defensive player now. I've been the first third cheaper so well we got a true story. I was not a great football player. National TV. I was a good teammate. I wasn't a good awesome. That is awesome. You talked about being a good teammate. How you able to take your experiences? Here's is as maybe a backup player and translate them into being a gather became one of the best coaches in college football history. I think it was an asset lurks. Works with how important was the second and third row attitude and how it could be so frustrating. 'cause of athletes not to be a great football confirms the had to rely on. He can't rely on attitude you had to rely on. Ut Me maybe. I wouldn't be very good but I tried to make my teammates debates better by encouraging them by most important by doing that. Job My job coach when you when you take over program you got a chance to take over a lot of different programs. I'm just curious the first time as a head coach that that first speech that I am not meeting what your message was and if the other stops along the take if that message changed for change an awful I think gentleman. I know you had no choice whatsoever would be the head. Football Poku cheer. They didn't ask to European. You didn't get a chance to vote. I also know that if you did have I wouldn't be here because you heard this stuff I am. I understand. You want to say about being sick and you'd understand one thing. I had a choice. I had a great job. I didn't need move by family. I need I need to leave a great situation. I came here because I thought if we work together we could read it truly achieve something. And we're going to do things we're going to be able to trust one another they'll be committed to care about one another and nobody out workers still plays goes out physically. Nobody L. Bite you'll be better. Fundamentally fascinating brought you like given all of the success choosing takeover downtrodden programs. I happen to. Let's see your your story about taking over South Carolina and how the struggles early and now your resolute and bring it back when you been successful also previous places and it takes a little longer to turn it around. How are you able to steal deep down deep and continue to believe in the values debt? You believe it. I say you're willing. They do want to do something. Bad enough you'll find a way if you want to cheat you'll find a way if you don't you'll find excuses a lot easier to find breath than solution. I also think it's important to make sure that you never sacrifice short reign decision that will sacrifice your long range recall for example. Maybe handed suspense of athletes and Arkansas. By I hear but that that was more critical because if you don't you establish a culture there's ninety will be conducive to baking young men as well as good football players. I never felt like coach. I felt I coach like I love that. Coaching life Coach when when I look at the way your teams played. You mentioned how you're going to be tough and physical and you're GONNA be detail oriented and that's the way those teams played. You had a chance. Take that Notre Dame team and play on the biggest stage. There was all your games. Were obviously national television. At that time you guys were on a big stage but the biggest moments it seemed seems like your team more often than not rose to that occasion. What was the key to not go outside yourself on the big stage and those big moments lady and we beat sixteenth up and we'd be three teams were either one or two and that was because we want if they were to in eighty nine Brian? We beat conference champions so we're used to play it in big games however get a big game I would tell the flint everytime you would've game the next PUTT next gained becomes even bigger. Maybe we just beat by Evan that we're playing with more important to us than what Miami Russia's if we lost today everything else was ruined over what we had done previously thank gave the basic. We tried to get the athletes. Do one you had to convince them. They can wit. We're playing by one thirty four games row and the first quarter changing into the field. Jay Stay outside linebacker the American tack with this game because we believe that we could win number much number knbr juice naked to thank doing always melted my obligation to design a play Colegio debuted be successful. Perhaps the most important. I don't let your teammates that you feel you have the right to fail. Nobody is right there. 'cause other the people fail because you know fulfill your obligations Joint Military Join T. Detroit and visit you on his childhood worth obligation you the bus. Take them fulfilled best. You say what's different today and when I was younger. Do they talk about the race. Privileges denies you. After we talked about the obligation of responsibility fashion. Pay For the late. The you have opted against responsibility you bust after Lee fulfilling and I'm not gonNA accept anything they left by Woody Hayes. Your job as a head. Coach is not to be well like your job to bake them that very day. Most people don't want to get tougher. Aw your obligation four sets believe how good they can be code so like. I got a question for a first time head coach. I just completed my first season. We had a winning season first time in a decade so now the biggest challenge is to go.

"I would love to that's a motivational speech, by the way, you just gave another motivational speech. You work with us. Not for us. That's motivation. Look at you just being all types of motive. You're like the next fucking Lou Holtz out there with your motivation. Oh, okay. I was thinking about when I I told Doug Gottlieb was the host of the show is looking I was like what does I thought about doing like a Lou Holtz impression for my pep talk. What do you think he's like? Over a well tonight. You're a Bumblebee bumblebees bodies are way too big for the size of their wings. They should not be able to fly at the scientific fact that bumblebees and not be able to go off the ground. But tonight, girl Bumblebee, your outweighed outmatched like you'll fly tonight. Like a Bumblebee tonight, you make magic how about the magic tricky did with the newspaper that one time he ripped up the newspaper, and then he folded it and then by the end of it, it was a whole newspaper. Again, Lou Holtz is fucking legendary. Yeah. He is. He he does that newspaper trick about two hundred and twenty times a year and all his speaking gigs. I know that much makes cash. Now. Okay. Interesting sentence, you just put there because it was slapped at Lou Holtz for using his same Hackney thing. And then you complimented him at the end from which cashing make. So I don't know how I feel about what you just said about Lou Holtz. Good. I'm glad you don't know how to feel. Was it a shot at Lou Holtz or compliment Lou Holtz right there AJ? I don't I don't know. know. If however you interpret it. I'm just putting out there things out there, just stating facts. I can't wait for Saturday with you. You're the man have a great thanksgiving. Happy thanksgiving. Do you want to say happy thanksgiving anybody, or is that kind of anti your thing too? Who else is in there who else in the office with your right now? Everybody's in the office at some some point scattered around. The we got a big merchantville going on. So there's a lot of panic happening right now in the office. Oh, happy thanksgiving to everybody in the office over their land radio. And maybe to you. That means a lot. Two hundred thousand people listening to you could've maybe said happy thanksgiving to them. But that's not your thing. That's not your second. Pandered Virata applause for all the troops. And the firefighters out there. Troubles right now. I want wanna give you I'm giving. You can't see me. Appreciate everything you do. Now once that you wish them happy thanksgiving. "In order to fritzy doing Shannon Sharpe in person, do you wanna go worse to first? Yes. The worst thing was for t- doing Shannon. Sharpe to Shannon, Sharpe. Second to that is the most awkward. Oh, yeah. By far than Lou Holtz was is got to be right there and then. I think Paul's was awkward to, although injury luck had a great sense of humor. Mine really not that often. No, because it's like you're doing it to front by comparison. It's not bad at all. No, not at all. I would say my Lou Holtz to Lou Holtz was the most awkward at just it was ter nocco it was. It was just not good, not good at all? Yeah, for two. And when you're doing it face to face with that person and they're not expecting it and it's obvious it's got kind of a negative quality to the impersonation, isn't it figure really positive or happy? I think you sound like Shannon Sharpe when you do? Well, when I sound like I'm not positive. I'm talking like I got marbles in my mouth is nothing like a cute about it. It's kind of kind of kind of lemme lemme here. Let me here. I think to Denver Broncos struggle case keenum over raider Bronco peak laugh. The navy with. That's how he sounds kind of does. And my Lou Holtz doesn't it sound like themselves? You know, either they're in denial about it or they don't think they sound that way. Then someone does it to them, especially on a national. Scale. I don't know if they love that puts her pitch show same way we too. Yep. Louis coach is always your coach. Holtz always is like coach, what do you think about the big Notre Dame game versus Georgia Tech with this week and what could they do versus that offense? Here's Jay. Craze, put their pencil and same way we do. Come on, never Gigi. I know that was the that was the bad part. And I, when I did the impersonation cries, put their weight and then he goes sees at Christ's first of all, it never never. Dear. Oh, this is a bad idea. And then I ran into his son skip, and I said, oh, I had your dad on the show. I did my Lou Holtz impersonation he goes, oh, really? And I said, yeah, so then I go, I guess I gotta do it to his son, so I went cries their past same way we and he goes, how did take it? I go not well, not well, kind of like you're taking it right now. What are you an idiot. In that strange that I was listening to the killers. I'm coming out of my cage and I'm doing just fine. And I started singing at like Lou Holtz like what is wrong with me. Used to every day all day, but whatever years, what what is wrong with me that I would somehow I would go, you know, the killers song. I wonder how Holtz would sing that if Lou Holtz went to karaoke and he said. You know, put on the killers. I think back in the day you had that long drive back in. And you got a lot of time on your high at fifty, five minutes. I fifty five minutes to go. Why am I still working at this place? I'm making this drive because why. Yeah. So I got a song in my head yesterday. I don't even know who sings it. I can't stop this feeling like Yuga chunk. Yuga Chuck. Ooh, Gotcha. Do you know who sing I I can't. I, I can't. Yes, stop this feeling or fight this feeling and I started singing it and I don't even who sings it. And then of course my wife goes, why are you singing that? I go jock. Guga. Imagine if you're in the band and that your role like that, that's your part of the song. So when you tell your grandkids like, yeah, that's me like, where are you? Grandpa. That's me going Ugo. Chuck. Do you have that song? See, I can't even find it. I don't know how to write. I've put an, I can't fight this feeling just two days. No, who sings it. Blue suede blue suede I like how To's or said blue Swede. Sweet sweet..

"Game plan for a guy like joseph innovators he's a guy that we've all known being a member of team for so long then he came to vegas and now he kind of sprinkles in extreme tour and you have cpi is there difference between the two fighters the time periods like is there a feeling fight differently now that he's been in vegas yes i do but he does a good job of rob iran seeing who's gonna be i just that i don't go out of but he reminds sports now explain reminds me of when i did play football in high school lou holtz was coach at notre dame and lou holtz would rock a pro sigh of real modern offense one play and then the next week come out with the wish fo and then the option and i think joe does a good job of mixing his old style and new style too is fights is very dangerous he's flick is awkward especially for a guy his age he hasn't lost his athleticism and had something that we've been really focused on and strongly for the fight you know thinking about something that you were talking about earlier and it's becoming a gym owner and training fighters that's not an easy task to take on and i know there's been ups and downs as you've been doing it but do you remember a particular moment that you can point to when you knew you had something special when you knew the gym was gonna survive and it was gonna actually.

"That i quote unquote love yeah it was fun like when we were in our twenties but then it becomes a job and all sudden you don't have any marketable job skills because all you've been doing is talking sports or reading off teleprompter so the whole thing about finding something you love to do and somebody dumb enough to pay do it to me i've kind of lived as a guiding principle but maybe it isn't the best principle i don't know but i if i get these simple guidelines from people i respect who have been there so to speak lou holtz had been there for kaufman been there and i therefore respect their wisdom i live by these credos and and so from that standpoint it was kind of like it's separated all the bullshit mike yeah why what yeah i can't win because i know just gonna make things up already have so now what can i do all i can say is that's not true and then at mattocks just going to say no is true and then what do i do it's a it's a he said he say and then along those lines never spending time on it doesn't mean downside yeah it's it's so clear now with that with that said it's not like it's not like i wanna make this this this clear it's not like i am above criticism i don't even know i've listened to an interview maybe i was doing the interview i didn't remember the point being this person's like somebody who really really really is legitimate like alice kind of star in talking about twitter and maybe it was andy cohen with howard stern i don't know or marc maron i dunno point being that you know you get you caught up in in criticism and it's human nature it's it's going to bother you but it's the difference between how much it bothers you when you first start out and then how much about is.

"I don't know how i gave you any sort of expectation of what to expect based on spring ball because coaches meet with players they have such limited amounts of time during the spring before spring ball that they're literally just learning about their players during spring ball in that if if you're a new coach you don't know what this receiver is good at you don't know what this safety does you don't know the work habits of this left guard whatever and you honestly you're learning about your new staff because almost without exception a new head coach is bringing in spare not spare parts but parts from different parts of the country and backgrounds and everything like that so you're really just it's a learning process what what is dan what if you instantly went on offense what if you said no it's going pretty well it's definitely going better than our friends over at st well then you're increasing expectations time increasing expectations but you're going to gin up the fan base a little bit you're going to get people talking about spring ball if it's a smaller school you're gonna get people talking about your program yeah you gotta make sure you beat st otherwise get fired but history favors the bold my friend i don't i don't care about winning in spring tie that's that's winning the internet and that means nothing so i'm going to say you manage those that you do holtz isn't that what like lou holtz would always like i don't know how we're gonna win this game looking guys they're incredible we'll we'll be look if we stay within fourteen so i would say you know it's it's an overhauling process and we're just taking baby steps that's what i would do i would manage expectations and by myself as much time as humanly possible because again i barely know these players at that time of spring our new strength coach really paying dividends sats at the big move opponent on strength coach and the strength staff that's who gets to see the players.
