"See is that race makes a difference. Okay, so you talked about this sort of halo effect for quarterbacks who make the Pro Bowl and how that halo effect plays out differently over time for white QBs versus black QBs. Dave, you've also written about a similar effect when it comes to the NFL Draft. So tell us about that. But it is the case that if you're a number one pick, if you're a top draft pick, that will stay with you as a white quarterback far longer than they'll stay with you as a black quarterback. In terms of pay in terms of pay in terms of the Pro Bowl and in terms of the draft, there's the halo effect for white quarterbacks that persist. So this halo effect just stays with them and with the black quarterback, that vanishes a lot faster. And so with the white quarterback that magic stays with them, you're more likely to make up an excuse for what happened for the white quarterback. With the black quarterback you blamed the black quarterback. You look how long the Giants kept with Jones. I mean, I mean, he's been there how long now is was fourth year, 5th year? And he's never played all that well. And they just kept giving him another chance and another chance and another chance. And history tells us with a black quarterback, they would have given up a lot faster. They would have said, this isn't working. You're not winning. And we need somebody else. And with the white quarterback, they're more likely to be saying something like, hey, if we surround him with better talent, we'll get a different outcome. Well, I got news for you. That's true for all courts. You surround him with better talent. You'll get a different outcome. It seems like part of the problem here isn't just people's biases. It also has to do with the way that quarterbacks in the NFL are rated and evaluated. The quarterback passer rating system, which was developed many decades ago and is still used today. It only considers passing, running by a quarterback is not taken into account. Dave, can you talk about that rating system and how it correlates with race? Well, what we see with quarterbacks is that if they're black, they tend to run. Running does matter, it does make a difference if your quarterback can actually move. And so there is a benefit to running with the football and black quarterbacks do this a lot more than white quarterbacks do. And Peyton Manning basically his whole career took the ball from center, took a few steps and through the ball. And that was it. That's the level of effort he was going to be making here. And if they came running at him, he would either throw the ball away or get stacked. It was like, I'm not going anywhere. I'm just going to do this. And there are quarterbacks that are much more mobile, and they are harder to handle. So when we look at salaries, we would expect, well, if you're doing something that actually helps me win, I should pay you for that. Well, no. Running with the football does not get you more pay as a quarterback. And because it's the black quarterbacks that are predominantly doing that, that means black quarterbacks are doing something. They don't get paid for. There are white quarterbacks who do run, you know, Steve Young ran, and there's other quarterbacks who run. Josh Allen runs. They also don't get paid to do that. But it is the case that if you're looking at who runs more often it is black quarterbacks to run more often. You know, all this makes me wonder, Dave, if there's an opportunity for NFL coaches and GMs here, that if they could learn to recognize their own biases and work against them, that they might end up having an advantage over other teams. Do you think that that's something that could happen or something that has happened in the NFL? It is the case. And football history that that's true. So the NFL was actually a whites only league. It was initially not. It was integrated from 1920 to 1933. But then in 1933, under the leadership of the owner of not surprisingly, the Washington Redskins, they decided to make it a whites only league, that was in 33. And it remained white's only until 1946 and the reason why it integrated is because the Cleveland rams wanted to move Los Angeles. They wanted to move into Los Angeles coliseum and the mayor and the city council in Los Angeles said if you don't integrate your team, you can't use our coliseum. And suddenly the rams integrated their team. And then other teams slowly did this, the Redskins were the last to do this. What the American football league did, and they started in 1961 or so. They were much more inclined to hire African Americans to be their players, which is why when you get to the end of the 60s, in the first two super bowls, the NFL seems to dominate, but after that, they didn't, because the AFL had integrated faster than the NFL. And they ended up winning super bowls. Because people were convinced. I mean, they were pretty sure the NFL in the 1960s had been around for 40 years. The AFL had been around for 5 or 6 years and people were sure the NFL is the better league. Well, the AFL caught up very quickly because they integrated much faster. And the same thing happened in baseball, baseball teams seem to do better in the 1950s that integrated faster. And so it is the case that if you're looking to hire talent, you can take advantage of people's biases. I believe Warren Buffett has said this that he tends to hire women because women are undervalued in the market. And so that's an advantage. All right, well, Dave, let's bring this conversation back to the place that started. This weekend, Patrick Mahomes will take on Jalen hurts and the Super Bowl. This is an historic moment, two black quarterbacks meeting in the Super Bowl for the first time. What do you make of that? What does it say in your mind about the NFL in 2023? Well, we do know that there were two black coaches in the Super Bowl, what was that? 15 years ago, and how much progress we make after that. None. We did not see a change in the evaluation of blackhead coaches for his wife at coaches. So it is an historic moment. It's great. But is it going to change systematic thinking about this? That remains to be seen. The other thing I would add to that is we want to say blacks and whites are treated the same. I want to see a black Peyton Manning. I want to see a black quarterback that just makes decisions and never moves. I'm just going to take the snap. I'm going to make a decision, and that's all I'm giving you. And if somebody's rushing me, I'm either going to fall down or throw the ball away, but I'm not an athlete, I'm a quarterback. Is there a black quarterback that's ever fit that definition? I don't think so. Thanks so much for joining us today and breaking all this down. Sure. It was fun. Okay, coming up. Deshaun Reed of the athletic tells us about his conversations with current and former NFL players and executives about what it means to be black in the NFL today. "And I think there are many examples of that type, like moonshot, for example, a moonshot, which is I guess it's meaning has morphed in a sense, but it was originally inspired by Wally moon and the fact that before Dodger Stadium opened and the Dodgers had moved out to the West Coast that the team needed a temporary ballpark and it used the Los Angeles coliseum, but that had not been designed for baseball. And so you had a left field foul pole that was 250 feet away from home plate and because pitchers hated that. Naturally, they put up a big fence and therefore, while moon, Dodgers left handed hitter, changed his swing so that he could hit these high fly balls to the opposite field, which were then called moonshots because they would maybe go over that fence. And now I guess we say moonshot mostly just like for any kind of towering fly ball. I don't know that it's meaning has shifted completely, but sometimes it's just like, oh, that was a bomb. That was a moon shot. Like, I don't know if people even think about the arc of it as being so specific, but I don't think most people think that's why we call it moon shots or remember while he moon necessarily. Maybe they think like, oh, he hit that to the moon. It's a moon shot, right? So those meanings can change or like the etymologies that we have in our heads if we have any etymology in our heads at all. Those shift over time. But I think there are a lot of remnants and fragments like that in baseball. So yeah. Yeah, we're going to get emails done. We're going to get we're going to get a bunch of emails. And that's fine. Because I'm sure that there are things that we're not thinking of and will go, ah, that, yes. Yeah, I'll link to this cut for peace because it includes some other candidates like that. On deck and in the whole, which was probably originally in the hold, I mean, these are not terms. You used to have to stand in a hole. Yeah. You should be playing. There used to be a hole, and then they were like, that's dangerous. We should cover that up. Just make them stand there. This is one of these cases where people aren't even necessarily sure how these migrating to baseball and I guess Scott Boris would be happy with the nautical terminology here and then like bullpen, the origins of bullpen are disputed and what else banjo hit her bush league like all these band box. I mean, the people think of an actual physical bandbox when they say the word band box probably not. No one really uses band boxes anymore, or like around the horn. Yeah. No one really thinks about why they say around the horn or maybe they think about it and just don't know why, but that was like, you know, another nautical term probably like cape corn. Rounding cape horn, and so we say around the horn, in you don't even think about these things for the most part. And I like that. I like that they're just these remnants of earlier times that we all just take for granted, and you learn them if you're someone who's growing up as a baseball fan. Yeah. You're exposed to them very early on and you just accept, sure, that's what that's called. I'll never question that until you turn 35 and you realize, hello. I don't know why that was called that. Why was that called that? So that's always a fun little process. I'm still back on thinking about how wild it is that people don't know what the same icon is for anymore. Yeah, can't say I miss floppy disks, particularly. I like having a lot of storage space, but yeah, floppy just were terrible. And they broke all the time. They were very temperature sensitive. Remember how much more temperature sensitive the computing experience used to be. I mean, I know it's not good for them to be hot still, but you really had to I was like taking care of a very particular plant, you know? Yeah. Like the floppy disks that we grew up with, we're no longer floppy, right? By our time, originally they were floppy. It's really floppy. I guess maybe my aunt when I was very young had archaic computer that really did have the big old actually floppy, floppy disks. But by the time we got computers, we're talking about the three and a half inch ones that were not floppy at all. And we were still calling them floppy because that was the term that was just so in use. Anyway, if you want to hear more of our ramblings about technology and how it's changed, we did a whole bonus pod for our Patreon supporters about that couple months ago. So that's out there for you. Yeah, where I sung the praises of no longer having to defrag your hard drive. What a good thing. How about that? All right. Question from Matt hall Patreon supporter who writes in response to Miguel Cabrera getting intentionally walked after his 2999th hit should batters be allowed to reject and automatic intentional walk. You made a comment about how Mickey wasn't able to try and reach for one off the plate because of the new intentional walk rule. What if a batter could refuse this and force the pitcher to throw four balls anyway? I believe there is maybe a joke askey proposal out there that the batter should be able to reject the intentional walk and then if the intentional walk is done over the batter's objection, it's like there's a steeper penalty that I think you get an extra base or something. You get two bases instead. So what do you think? Should there be either steeper penalties or just the option to say? Nope, I do not accept that declined the intentional walk and I will swing away. I'm struggling to know what my answer would be because I think in modern baseball how many guys do you think would really take advantage of being able to say no thank you, please throw to me rather than give me a base. I mean, first of all, I think that that would be a decision that would probably be made in conjunction not just with the player, but with the staff, right? Because if you're issuing an intentional walk you are doing it because you think that the batter behind that guy often you're thinking the batter behind that guy has a less favorable matchup as a less good hitter, some combination of those things. And so I guess it would probably be on the one hand it would be dismissed fairly often because you're like, no, throw to me, the better guy, but you still have the advantage of being on base, so I guess, I don't know, how often do we think this would happen because I do think that there's something about there is something cowardly about it, but there's also obviously like good strategy in play there, and we like strategy. We're not huge fans of cowardice. Though we are all subject to cowardice at points in our lives. So we're not especially judgmental about cowardice, but we don't want to promote it. As a base state. So I don't know, maybe I'm just saying words while I try to decide what I think about this. I don't think it would happen often. I don't think it would happen very often. I think they'd be like, yeah, I'll just take my base. Right. And they probably should just take to take a risk. As we often discuss the intentional walk is usually not decision, right? And so it follows, then, that declining, the intentional work would not usually be the sounds they were metric decision. And so probably teams would just have a policy or maybe there would be a hurried consultation, you know? And you could slide rules out. Right. So I think you would usually have it declined and this would not make any meaningful difference. I love the idea of defining it because how much fun would that be? Oh my God. No. The body language fight me. Yeah. The body language alone. That would be awesome. I mean, what would be cooler than that, saying, no, I am not taking my base or I will take it by force. You will not give me this base..

"Week. Cue the music. Music is cute. I don't think we've dusted this piece off for a while. Yeah, that music is ready. It's going and it's not dusty anymore. So that's good, right. Yeah, it's good when it's not digital dusty. Yes. So our chili bowl nationals, we are less than a month away. From the big old honking Tulsa Oklahoma event with drivers coveting salivating for their trophy there and entry list is it's getting kind of heavy on NASCAR, isn't it? It is, well, hey, if you even look at what's happening this week, they've got the Tulsa shootout going this week. Kyle Busch is out there with brexton bush as well. They're both competing. Wow. Kyle Busch even won a heat race from 8th starting spot. All right. And stuff like that. Yeah, yeah. What do we got here? We got the chase Elliott, Kyle Larson, Alex Bowman. Those guys all have something in common. Chase Briscoe, JJ alee and Christopher Bell. I wouldn't discount Kyle Busch. If this goes well, either making a last minute appearance into the lineup here. Or maybe going into next year's chili bowl, he might swap up into that. So we'll see. They should almost have a back at the shop owners camera when they're biting their nails and watching their drivers potentially dying or being mangled or whatever. Right. You know, usually with chili bowl and stuff like that, it's indoors. It's very, very short track and the cars don't quite get up to the kind of levels of speed and craziness that you're used to. So I think this one feels a little bit more tame, even though they do a lot more flipping and stuff in the chili bowl nationals. I think the coroners are a little bit more comfortable with that one because the speeds are a little lower in the chance of injury seems a lot less. I don't think I've seen too many guys and you're very critically in the chili bowl nationals and in recent years. Yeah, yeah. But we do see lots of flips. The flip counter is usually very impressive. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So we'll be seeing that pretty soon. I just wanted to get the listeners appetite ready for it. Yeah, and this is going to be the part of the season where we're giving you 1 a.m. updates on Kyle Larson doing things on dirt out in Australia or something. All sorts of weird stuff. Keep up with us in the off season. This is where things get interesting. Late at night, you never know what's going to happen. Is he going to be over there? That I don't know because he's been kind of skipping a lot of things due to just being the champion. He was major. But at the same time, I think Australia is pretty locked down, aren't they? The last time I checked, they were. I think our Australian followers would be able to help us out a little more. But they've been kind of more of the stringent countries along the way and to their credit. They've done very well with the virus to this point and doing that. But yeah, no, so we'll have to see if that even is a thing. I don't know. Yeah, speaking of that being a thing, the Los Angeles coliseum, fast approaching, they've got a $1 million budget for track preparation. And that's taking shape and the bush like clash, a non points paying event to kick off the season. I kind of our first look at the next gen race car under race conditions on the track action begins Saturday, February 5th with a practice at noon eastern. There's going to be a heat race, a main event. It's going to be like a short track feel. Sunday evening 6 p.m. eastern on Fox, giant, NASCAR, stock cars, downtown Los Angeles, DTLA for those that are here. A quarter mile oval should be fun, however, I hate to be the bearer of bad news. I just have a sense. A crowd will not be allowed. That's my own personal opinion. It's not fact yet, but things are trending in that direction. Let's just hope that with all the prelude that we've been giving this thing and all the press and hype and everything that we've been giving it, hopefully there is a crowd allowed to be there. This is just an event that's possibly once in a lifetime if it doesn't go well. It does go well. You never know. It might be a once in a lifetime. So this is the thing that, you know, people were there to be able to say, I was there, but at the same time, you weren't ready to be safe and you want everybody to continue living their lives as well. See how this goes. But it's interesting with the virus starting to spike again. It might be reduced capacity or no capacity. We'll see. I don't know. Yeah, I want to see. Again, I don't have any inside news. I don't have nothing has been announced. This is just a sense, living here in the state. I kind of have a feeling that's the way it's going to go. And we do still have several months to go. Yeah. Until a decision has to be made. So we'll have to see how this goes. But I guess we really have about two months now to go. But it's closing. It's closing fast. So I want to see what happens. But yeah, hopefully hopefully people are allowed to be there because I think that's an event that is going to be special years down the line one way or the other. This is going to be one that people are going to want to say that they were at if they had a chance to be there. Yeah. You were in Atlanta, did you hear about the big news from there? Yeah, there's going to be a test session with the next gen cars. Not open to the media, except for a one hour period where we'd be allowed to take photos and videos. That's weird. From certain specific angles. So public will not be allowed to be there no fans. But they'll be testing things out to see what packages. What are they hiding? Well, I don't think it's that they're hiding anything. I think it's that they're going to be testing out several different things. And they don't want preconceived ideas from fans saying, I like that one better than this one. Because it's going to be a brand new track, brand new surface. They don't want these cars going so fast that the cars are exiting the track and going through the catch fence. But they also don't want them so locked down. They're not able to do something. They're going to be kind of honing in what package they want for.

"Give me one. Don't you have a massive staff to handle stuff like this? No, that's the thing. We don't actually have a huge staff. So unlike these other conglomerates out there that just swoop in and put like 40 people on it, there's two of us really right in things. Michael will pop him with writing stuff every night. And he's usually primarily video for us, but gotcha. Yeah, there's I mean, there's just being Joseph for the most part, writing most of this stuff, so we don't have an expansive staff. Give us a break NASCAR. Give us some date. One day. Like we said, I have a feeling that this is going to be a busy off season. I think your feeling is correct from some of the things I'm hearing, there could be some really interesting things coming in the next few weeks. So we've got the clash race format that was slammed down our throat this week. It's going down at the Los Angeles coliseum. I have no earthly idea how they're going to fit these cars in that tiny space. But, you know, I guess they're NASCAR. They'll figure it out. Yeah, so we're going to have a field open to 40 entrance I hear. So qualifying a race winners or championship people, it's just whatever, anybody. Everyone who wants to pretty much show up can. Because I don't think you're going to get more than 40 that show up anyway. But yeah, so they'll have practice sessions prior to single reason enough for me to say single car qualifying runs, which will determine the starting order for the four scheduled heat races. And like we said, it's open to up to 40 cars that can compete. So on Sunday, this is and that was on Saturday, by the way, we do all the practice in qualifying all that stuff. Sunday, the on track action begins at 5 p.m. Eastern Time on Fox. Blah. Bah. And that'll be four 25 lap heat races consisting of ten cars each, so for races with ten cars each that's 40 cars. Guys. Coliseum here. Hey, coliseum. How are you doing? New to this whole thing. Usually I just have football inside me. What? What is wrong with your sport? Why are they putting cars in me? That's a good question. One we will defer to NASCAR for. I don't think they're gonna fit inside me. They'll fit. It might not fit very well, but they'll fit. Okay. Well,.

"Practice eric jones later similar crashed through the barrier that prompted nascar track officials to make even more changes as probably where i got half my gray hair but bdo with the cool part was that we adapt it right. We made some changes. We move that back attire. Pack we were willing willing to do that. I didn't see it happen in real time. But i saw the highlight right after it happened. Because you know everything's happening so quickly. I just said holy cow i you can't go straight through the chicane you've gotta turn you gotta break. You gotta turn bubba put that on display for everybody you know and you replayed it all the time so it. It was definitely One of those crazy highlight things that You look at and you say this is a dicey place. It's deceiving how fast you are and where you need to put on the brakes and the drivers are learning. You know every other road course. Watkins glen and sonoma's you're already familiar with it. Everybody's got lots of laps They come out here for the first time getting their breaking zones right getting their passing zones. Right all played into how they made their way around the track. S looking at that. You know we were trying to work. Within the parameters of the oval during that time and we'd worked on that chicane several times trying to replicate somewhat of a bus. Stop like they had to watkins glen. Naturally they were scrubbing speed but as their radar drivers. They're gonna figure out the fastest way through anything so practices progress. They figured out how to make that faster. And they were cutting corners to make faster than we saw what happened with bubba being nimble and being able to change. And that's car willing to make us change at that point We we made some changes. And thus we've again changed that chicane you know post years after to make an even deeper to cut more speed which is made it more competitive but it was one of those moments like. Oh no what have we done right like what. What are we created back there. You know with a car. Hit that hard in that bad so just starting to think automatically. What can we do to make different. How can we change it. How can we get it to where we get through the rest the weekend and still being a good competitive drag still make it work You know working with carpe. That point marcus to make sure we made those changes but yeah it was that first initial thought of oh craft we kinda scenario so yeah. The crashes by jones and wallace might have been the indelible images of the rebels inaugural weekend if the race had lacked for drama. It didn't i. There was the fourteen car pile up on a late restart that was triggered. When brad kaz laskey overshot. The i turn on the side larsen on the outside back through the junior too hard through kids. Laskey larson both into the wall. Big bird budget coming out again and then off. The final restart was the memorable battle between johnson and tricks with blaney emerging. The victor go. I was starting to head towards victory lane as kind of normal for for a race and i was watching it on on speedway tv and i don't normally cuss but i let whole each that. That was that was the storybook ending. You want it right. You wanted that last minute. Doug flutie hail mary kind of kind of competition anyway. And we got it and had a buddy of mine's Did you pay someone to do that. Because that could not have been better scripted. And that chicane i mean. That's the whole reason that we put that chicane in was marcus. Wanted passing zone a place where you have some drama right there before the start finish and it paid off big it would turn out to be the closest that johnson would get to winning during the final three seasons of his cup career and even despite the the seven times series champion believes it's helpless which the royals reputation for being a worthwhile risk. Think it's been a great success. I think the media attention. Maybe even some of the complaining from the drivers to the challenges that they deal with their has helped build the story about that racetrack. And i know everybody tunes and watches as a result for marcus smith. The finish was validation of vision. There's incredible is incredible. I mean we had a a last lap last. Turn pass for the lead It was it put competition As the number one story. I think of the of the day Drivers were tested. The cars were tested when they got through the first turn right into the to the infield portion of the rebel and they got him without a wreck for the first lap. Breathe the sigh of relief. Honestly because that it's a challenging deceiving challenging Turn when you're coming past the start. Finish line and heartbreak and left in the infield And you don't want to give up your spot so that that moment was really key for me and of course the finish with With blaney passing the two cars that were running first and second Jimmy in in martin and Blaney coming through for the win. That was one of those storybook things that happens and jimmy was going for it Going for broke stay in the in the playoffs at the time and gave it all they had and took a risk. And that's what racing is all about taking risks to win and i think that All played out really well here. I got that feeling that it was Gonna work frankly before the race. Even even started because of the excitement was was at an all time. High the the anticipation and The the pop circumstance was all really Fantastic for the sport and then the race itself was incredibly competitive and entertaining and challenging drivers so all this things pulled together It's encouraging i think for for the whole sport to look at what was accomplished accomplished is that we saw that. We need to keep taking risks. That's part of the dna of nascar are and risks with with new tracks and new designs and challenges that we wouldn't have done before Those are part of the the foundation of the sport overall. So it's got to be part of our future. The future of nascar already has been significantly impacted by the roseville. A dirt race made its debut at bristol motor speedway in twenty twenty one and will return next year with a season opening exhibition race on a short-track inside the los angeles coliseum. The twenty twenty two schedule will mark. The third consecutive season of several major moves. That marcus smith says can be traced factories road course baby. It absolutely is The thing that i would look back on for the sport to have the encouragement to say yes to an idea that normally would have said no way too because it worked you know and if people felt like it didn't work That it wasn't a success. Then you know all the people could say you know. I told you so. It wouldn't work but taking risks again. Or what made the sport what it is and taking risks at new ideas Things that you don't think can be done. Our part of our success in part of our future dirt on bristol. The high banks atlanta motor speedway. That's very controversial. Right now going to kota. These are important things for us as a sport to take risks on and do things that you might be challenging but It's gonna it's gonna be part of our future. And i think we've just started. I think the ruble mark two things one was that the collaboration and the effort between the teams the tracks and the sanctioning body could produce great results. We all saw it. It got got national notoriety. Among i mean i have friends of mine who are not typical Fans of nascar call me. That was the most incredible race. I've ever watched in my life. Formula one fans who are friends of mine. Who like call me and said that that was amazing. So it showed. What collaboration do it. Also it also put to rest some of the concerns of what change can bring that if we reinvent ourself we rethink what we're presenting to the fans that it can be a good thing and we've certainly seen over the last couple of years and the changes that we've had Again with that. Collaboration as the foundation for it great things have happened in our sport. Thanks for listening to this narrative episode of the nascar. Nbc podcast and our. Thanks to nbc. Sports producer. joe. "One game involving the rams and the bears and he made that point and it's such an important point so easy but people lose sight of it when they watch the game and they admire when the quarterback drops his shoulder and drives through this. And hold onto the ball. Every one of those moments where you have contact with defensive player in the quarterback is a chance to get injured. You gotta minimize those once. Maximize those to his credit. But there's a fine line between courage stupidity. And he's on the wrong side of it for two offices and then amazing that you leaping for an end zone in the los angeles coliseum couple years ago an mvp campaign and getting your knee blown up. Because aaron donald hits it didn't sink in enough for carson wentz to see how to cat. I can't turn it off. I think that's what it comes down to when you get out there whether it's your throwing motion whether it's the way you go through your reads. Whatever it is that you're trying to do once you get out there and it's real the competitive instinct takes over and so many people treat them like a badge of honor. It really does become a problem. If it's infringing on your ability to be available to your team it's not heroic. It is it is if allow yourself to constantly be in a position where you get self injured. That's where once needs to rein himself. In and i don't know that it can be coached out of mike. Florio here on the rich eisen show took two weeks for the reality to just be staring. Everyone in the face Despite all the signs and the the writing on the wall that there is no scenario under which the houston texans would start to shawn watson this year zero point zero full blue karski on that front as tyrod taylor. God bless him. I mean what a awful set of circumstances always seems to befall this man when he has opportunities looks like a hamstring. Injury is going to keep him out for the foreseeable future. And i know they got this kid davis mills that they drafted. But here's a team. That kind of looks really stout uncertain areas when we thought they were just completely barren of talent and competition..

"Upon a time in nascar you could take the schedule from year to year and just change the dates ever so slightly and that's how you ran and it was two races here. Two races here and season was pretty much identical over. The last couple of seasons nascar has made some radical changes. Some of those were brought about by the pandemic and others. Because i think they thought it was time to shake things up and i want to get from our panelists and they can touch on what they liked about this schedule. We're going to do that first. And then we'll ask them what they would add to the schedule. Starving alexis alexis first off given. We're starting the season with the clash at the l a coliseum and we're visiting saint louis those are the biggies. What did you like about this or dislike about schedule. There's not much at all that i dislike about it. I mean i think Just like you mentioned there've been so many years in the past where we just carbon copy You know what the schedule was and go on from year to year now there some intrigue when the schedule is going to be announced it you know for the past. Two years we've had been used added venues taken away venues in the playoffs. That are now no longer in the playoffs and vice versa. And i love that. I think specifically for prn. It's great that we're opening and closing rebook ending our broadcast schedule at las. Vegas motor speedway. That's that's very fun And the l a coliseum. I mean look i try to think about how that's actually going to work in my head and i'm not so sure but i know the powers-that-be and the people that made that decision know how they're going to make it work and i'm sure it's going to be spectacular. I'm very excited to see that. Play out You know in in saint louis is going to be great too i mean. I don't think that there's one thing on the schedule that really. I kind of shook my head at at all putting homestead in the playoffs. I think was fantastic and taking richmond. Outlook just had a richmond race. That wasn't very thrilling at all. So that makes sense to me. Maybe one richmond race. No i didn't really say that. No sorry about that By the way. Brad kelly today is coming to us via remote. And he is brought to you by coca-cola with zero sugar and now even more delicious is the new coca cola zero sugar the best coke ever. You need to find out for yourself. So brad galli the schedule is out. We knew it had been leaked to us a little bit of time overall thoughts. I like it. I think alexis pretty much covered. All of the big changes One of them. That really stood out to me. That probably isn't talked about a lot is what she had just mentioned. Homestead moving back into the playoffs. I think that's a great spot for that particular race track to be. And truthfully i think richmond being a couple of races before the playoffs ended day race might actually make that a much better event as well loved the road courses that we added this year that we're going back them. We actually go to circuit of the americas a little earlier. We go to texas for the all star racing his traditional spot for the all star race before the six hundred and when we go back to texas. That's actually going to be even three weeks before that. And i do think that's a good place on the scoreboard as well and keep in. Mind this coming year. Car only has a half dozen road course races they have dropped the road course at daytona international speedway jeff. I wanna get your take. I off on running the clash at the los angeles coliseum. Well it's real simple when she was asking about how this is in your mind this up to bowman gray you get a pretty good idea. Because i race around a football field up there now. So when they to the coliseum. Which i have been in this coliseum before so i'll laced have an idea that it's a little bit more spacious than it is bowman gray so i think they're going to be making a pretty nice little layout i really do you know. They're they're putting the pavement down. They're not going to put the pavement down till january one again. A racing on february. But the thing is you know. We're getting caught up in and something that we're forgetting. Modern technology allows you to do that. I think now doug. I mean it's not like the old asphalt we have to press pack it down. Let it cure a little bit. They can put enough polymers in it. Some gun you probably could race on the end of the week. If you paid on monday you could race on sunday. One of those things that i like about that not maybe particular to the schedule itself but that race. That has come out recently that they're going to allow anybody who wants to come to come race that race traditionally it has been people You know that had one pole awards or things like that and as we moved on stage winners because we didn't have qualifying anymore but with the new car the next gen car being that being really the first opportunity for these teams to be able to test that out in a real racing environment to be able to open that event up to anybody who wants to come participate which i would assume would be every single person You know that would want to participate in any other race during the year I think that was a really good move. So nascar has basically turned this into an open invitation and everybody will get a shot. So let's be fair. And they'll all get a participation trophy to by the way that's way down in the entry blank. Get trophy brag. Maybe don't i don't know if you do or not. It'd be nice because 'cause people need to feel good about there's only gonna be one trophy. What you guys think about this. Oh doug i'd like to ask brad to me. Open it up might be a necessity because i'm willing to bet you going to be a lot of teams. They're going to be reluctant to go out there. That if they don't have lot of these new cars built they're pretty expensive to go out there and run an exhibition race on a real tight racetrack. First race of the year There may be some people declined for that. Reason is simply the math the economics of it. Yeah you know what with the all star race you have your people who are already in the all star race just like you're gonna have your people who are already qualified for the class itself but you do have that last chance qualifier with the open and all of.

"Don't know what to say you say it. Yeah so. I don't know man. This is in your backyard. I think you should be the one saying. The nascar clash. You know the race to kick off the season. The exhibition race is going to be held at the los angeles coliseum. Wow so not daytona. No so los angeles dodgers. Usc olympic games nascar. Wow so that's different. I mean that's different that's dt l. A. dude yeah i mean. That's that's that's amazing this is this is a venue. I mean posted olympics before they've they've hosted like any sporting event you could possibly want at some point. The dodgers started their bef- while they were making dodger. Stadium and left field was like crazy short. Because of how everything's configured they're now they're gonna put a racetrack in there. This is awesome so this is gonna be fun. I know a lot of people already gone our my gosh why are we moving it from daytona to l. a. This is just stupid. Of course relax on. This is great. This is excellent. We want more short track racing. This gives us a short track. And it gives us a non-point event where these guys they all want to win in this the stadium because this is a prestigious venue so this is going to be the other thing i look at when i think about this prospect of whatever this is that we're about to watch and february is a fact. This opens us up to future stadium events if it goes well of course so this thing gets off without a hitch and is a great show. This is a temporary race track. They can move this thing to any stadium at that point And we could be seeing this kind of stuff. Iconic venues across the country staples center staple center about the yankee stadium. How cool that'd be. I mean there's a lot of different opportunities here. You know it's funny. You mentioned this whole stadium kinda thing because we have been eluding to the nascar becoming monster jam you have. Yes i do. Remember your tweet update. Let's kinda do stadium stuff. They do kinda do stadium stuff. So this is the interesting thing though. Because we're in a situation where we have. We have a pretty good idea of what tracks we wanna go to. Because they're already built and we're in a weird time Money wise financial wise. Were you can't just build race tracks at ease Whenever you want some of the ones we've had for long like pal amounts of time since the beginning of time are starting to close down because it's hard to run race track right now so the fact that they're gonna be teaming up with this venue and possibly if this goes well other venues who knows. This would be something interesting. I think there's something here. And i think we all should give it at least an open. Mind and watch the event before we start Crapping on it like we usually do. I my instinct is just hammer the heck out of it saying it's the worst idea ever but i kind of want to see how this unfolds. How are they gonna fit those cars in this tiny basically a football field. Yeah i mean this is. This is gonna be a pretty tiny stadium for it to be happening now. As far as like the seating capacity obviously right but as far as the surface area of where the field is so this is is going to be interesting. This is for those who always want to see the nascar cup series racing bowman gray. This is going to be probably the closest thing you're ever gonna see to it especially if it goes poorly so you want to watch it. This is going to be as spectacle one way or the other. Whether it's the greatest race we ever see whether it's a race. It is so chaotic. That will never see something like that ever again. Either way it's gonna be something you're gonna wanna watch and you don't wanna remember that you saw it so this is going to be fun not to mention. It's kind of going to look like the cars movie. Yeah no kidding. Like for those younger generation nascar fans that grew up with cars. It's gonna look just like it. And i think it's gonna be a lot of the appeal as well. They've got the new nascar line of cars characters. That are in the in the stores now and i don't think that's coincidence. All this stuff's kind lining up that way. They're moving the numbers on the door. Lightning mcqueen's numbers or forward. That's where the cars are going to have the numbers next year. The next gen's those were called necks. Jen's were you start looking at all the things that happened in the cars franchise and sudden. It's starting to come true in the nascar world. I don't think that's all by mistake. So we'll see how this goes. But i'm excited now. This is in downtown los angeles. How is that gonna play the noise. Reverberating off of these buildings and stuff. I mean this is like the litter literally downtown. Yeah of any other track. It i can think of. I mean it. Yeah right out in the boonies of a high high populated area. It's still out in the boonies of that high papa area so totally As far as a nascar race goes this is going to be unprecedented. So this is pretty fun. I'm i'm pretty excited I think this is going to be an event that could possibly be groundbreaking and could change things. This this could be a game changer. For the industry and.

"Frankly exciting to be part of it. What do you think yeah All of the above. And i think that You know and. I've talked about this on the podcast and on the show and written about it but You know for anyone that that hasn't heard We talk about this before. If you've ever driven by allegiance stadium whether you have or you haven't just for my own for my own personal Observations i've driven by that Stadium so many times at so many different hours of the night. Sam gordon and we'll we'll talk about where i was. I was there at three o'clock in the morning or anything like that but Anyway just kidding. The point being is this Every time i drive by there and it's there has been various points of the clock. There's always a pack of raider fans outside the stadium milling about you. Know whether it's going to the raiders. The star you know the writer image star that they have. There are just walking around the parking lot. Taking pictures taking selfies themselves in front of the stadium and sam of their their their smiles stretch all the way across las vegas boulevard. I mean they're so happy and so proud writer nation to have that beautiful stadium as their home. I go back a long way with the raiders. All the way back to when they're in los angeles And between their fights in oakland to get a home that they can be proud of in a long term home that they can be proud of In los angeles where they thought they were gonna be in trying to fight to get something. Done there permanently back to oakland China figure out a way to stay there forever. Trying to get back to los angeles figuring. Maybe that's where the future is. That's where the new home is going to be. It's been a struggle and they've had to play in Basically shared stadiums the oakland coliseum. They shared it with the as it was kind of a dump and is i'm just being honest. You know it has showed its age. Hasn't been taken care of the way it needs to be. We all know you go to the coliseum. It was you know also. Usc's buildings so you had to share it with usc. And by the time they got to the to the coliseum the los angeles coliseum in the eighties. It was the stadium. I think it was like sixty years old by that point. That's how old it was at that point. My math might be a little bit off. it might have been even older than that So for them to now. Finally have a new home here in las vegas which is a great strategically placed point for their fans in los angeles fans in the bay area. Their fans nationwide. That love to come to las vegas to for nfl weekend. The growing base. That they have here in las vegas That the that grows by the day that pride that they have raider nation for that stadium. it's just so obvious and i think that them getting into the stadium for the first time tonight for a regular season game is sort of the culmination of decades. Long pent up excitement. And there's the the pride that they have. And i think the desire of of that fan base to make allegiance stadium one of the toughest place to come play in the league. We're gonna see that tonight. And i can't wait. I can't wait to see what what raider nation has up. Its sleeve to make that place just a really difficult to come and play football and i think tonight says its own for what we're gonna see all your long is. That is a team. That is a fan base city as ready as ready for stadium. It's ready for the nfl. Less ready for the raiders and again it's arsenide tremendous match up one night football. We're all going to be there. And i can't wait for the nba star absolutely And we will be there Obviously so Please check us out throughout the night Into the small hours of the morning. We'll get our stories and videos and podcasts. Posted as quickly as we can after the game So just download the app if you haven't yet vegas nation Go online vegas. Nation dot com. "He's just I don't want to get crazy and say like a once in a generation type talent, But he's all that I really expected more out of him and his team yesterday. Unfortunately, we didn't talk about or hear them very much because they didn't really do very much manufacturers get behind their teams. We see manufacturers flex their muscle. That's fast talk right here on prn. Yet you're short track racing. Fix with prn at the track, visit dough prn dot com. Now more of the O. Reilly, auto parts pit reporter. Hey, welcome back, along with Jordan Bianchi from the athletic and also time jets from the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Brad McMillan. Glad to have you with us. And over the weekend, Jordan broke a story with the NASCAR is deep into conversations with the folks at the Los Angeles Coliseum about having the Bush clash. Out there this year at a track they're going to construct inside the L A Coliseum. It's good for those of you that have been a Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston Salem. It's just a flat track that runs around the outside the football field and You're hearing that this may be the Bush clash next year. Yeah, I mean, it's going to be if this comes through and like I said in the report, all this is close to being finalized or it is being finalized. And it is expected that this going to happen. You know, we don't until pen meets paper and announce you don't know. But the expectation is that NASCAR is going to open its season of daily calcium and like you said, it's basically Bowman Gray Stadium, and that is a historic NASCAR track. They've raised up there for decades and decades going back to the late forties. And you just build a basically to be like a quarter to a third of a mile racetrack around a football stadium. It's going to be paved. Um, it's because it's the class. You're not going to have a full field. You don't have to worry about 40 cars. You won't have to worry about live pit stops, which you won't be able to have in this kind of format and this kind of track so The idea is you go to Southern California and the number two media market in this country. You put on this made for TV event, um, with all your top drivers and basically say, Go out there and race for big prize. Don't worry about points. Don't worry about anything else. And if you guys slam and bang into each other cool, great, It'll be good for TV. I like the idea. I like the concept. I think I think it's an opportunity to build some hype and some excitement for the day 2500 which if this comes to fruition, as we expect would be two weeks after this event. Tom. What do you think about it? Because Jordan. Another thing Jordan's hearing is they'll use This year's car, the 2021 car instead of the next more than likely, not 100%. The teams have push back on that a little bit. That would seem to make a lot of sense because those cars aren't going to be worth anything after this year anyway. You know, But when I hear about an event like this, the one thing I keep thinking about and you guys have probably heard Richard Children say this. As much as I have. He used to say to Earnhardt all the time. Bring me the trophy. You bring me the steering wheel and this is that kind of event. I think it has the potential to be great fun. I think it's got to be framed as fun and not, and that's why it's good if it happens as a non points race, because you can make it entertainment and not You know, this is this is for a spot in the playoffs. You No, no, no, no, Let's just go and have fun. Yeah, well, the cool thing is, I mean, we know NASCAR has run years and years and years ago Soldier Field Chicago, So we've We've seen this done before. Like you, said Bowman Gray Stadium went to Salem, which is running inside a football field. Or a sign of football stadium that inside the field. Sometimes those cars get sideways. They do. See I've been up there a few times I've seen. I've seen that happen. But this is a legendary facility. This is hosted. You know, two Olympics and Super Bowls and I mean, this is this is a well known venue. This is a one of the most well known venues. It's not Madison Square Garden, but it's in that realm, and it is an iconic venue in a major city. You know, it's in Fox Sports backyard, which I don't think you can overlook that component of this as well. You know, Fox is having a hand in this kind of thing. Fox Sports had a hand in Bristol becoming a dirt track last year, they wanted a dirt track on the schedule. They said. Why not do it at Bristol? Lo and behold, Guess what we had this year. So this is NASCAR listening to its television partner wanted to create. It goes back to our conversation earlier about the momentum and getting excitement. This is going to have people talking and I think at the end, I think the product on the racetrack is gonna be good enough where people are like. Is this cool? They want more short tracks. Well, guess what We're giving them to you. And we're giving to you in a format at a race track that is unique in a in a format that is going to induce full contact racing and hurt feelings into angry tempers on Tom for those that aren't aware of the Los Angeles geography. Yeah, This is this is right in downtown Los Angeles, basically, as opposed to Fontana, which is What 40 miles to the west to the east E 40 or 50 Miles to the east of downtown Los Angeles. Yet it's still metropolitan Los Angeles But yeah, these two facilities are pretty far apart. Oh, yeah, they're very far apart. And I like the idea of an exhibition race because you can do some fun things. You know, one of the things that I've always liked about when they did the truck race at old Dora. Is doing the you know the qualifying heats and maybe they can do even with 20 cars. Maybe they do four heats of five cars or five heats of four cars. Let me just spitballing that idea here because you've got to figure out how you're going to do this format and you want all of your big name drivers there, so I don't think you may see a just we're going to have. It's just gonna be the pole sitters in the year before. It might be a thing where you go to the er to and say if you own a charter We want you in this race and you take 36 cars. You divide them up into two heats. You take the top 10 from each heat. You got 20 right there, so 36 to 20. And then you have a couple of races. You making a TV event to heat races? Maybe a last chance Even you can do like Tom said. You can do some hooligan race. We haven't had one of those and for Norm, betting man, remember the fourth or those kind of moments, though, that people still talk about a driver, giving another driver the middle finger on national TV because he missed out on the main event..

A quarter authoritive a mile race track around a football stadium. it's going to be paved. It's because it's the class. You're not gonna have a full field. You won't have to worry about forty cars. You won't have to worry about live pitstops which you won't be able to have in this kind of format and this kind of track so the idea. Is you go to southern california. And the number two media market in this country you put on this made-for-tv event with all your top drivers and basically say go out there and racer big prize. Don't worry about points. don't worry about anything else. And if you guys slam and bang into each other cool great. It'd be good for tv. I like the. I like the concept. I think. I think it's an opportunity to build some hype and excitement for the daytona five hundred. Which if this comes to fruition as we expect would be two weeks after this event. Tom what do you think about it. Because jordan. another thing jordan's hearing is they'll use this year's car the twenty twenty one car instead of the next gen more than likely not one hundred percent the teams of push back on that a little That would seem to make a lot of sense because those cars aren't going to be worth anything after this year. Anyway you know. But when i hear about an event like this the one thing i keep thinking about and you guys have probably heard richard childress say this as much as i have used to say to earn hard all the time. Bring me the trophy. You're bringing the steering and this is that kind of event. I think it has the potential to be great fun. I think it's gotta be framed as fun and not and that's why it's good if it happens is a non points race 'cause you can make it entertainment and not you know this is. This is for spot in the playoffs. You know no no no. Let's just go and have fun. Well the cool thing is. I mean we know nascar his run years and years ago soldier field chicago. So we've we've seen this done before and like you said bowman gray stadium winston salem which is running inside a football field or football stadium not inside the field sometimes though those cars skip i've been up there a few times. I've seen thing that happened. But this is the legendary facility. This is hosted. You know to olympics and super bowls. And i mean this is. This is a well known venue. This is one of the most well known venues. It's not madison square garden but it's in that realm and it is an iconic venue in a major city. You know it's in fox. Sports is backyard. Which i don't think you can overlook that component of this as well you know. Fox's having a hand in this kind of thing. Foxsports had a hand in bristol becoming a dirt track last year. They wanted a dirt track on the schedule they said why not do it at bristol. Loan behold guess what we had this year so this is nascar listening to its television partner. Wanted to create goes back to our conversation earlier about the momento main getting excitement. This is going to have people talking. And i think at the end. I think the product on the racetrack is gonna be good enough where people are like. This is cool. Want more short tracks. Well guess what we're giving them to you and we're giving to in a format at a race that is unique in a format that is going to induce full-contact racing and hurt feelings into angry temper on tom for those. That aren't aware of the los angeles geography this is. This is right in downtown. Los angeles basically as opposed to tanno. Which is what what forty miles to the west to the east to forty fifty miles to the east of downtown los angeles yet. It still metropolitan los angeles but yeah. These two facilities are pretty far apart. Oh yeah the very far apart. And i like the idea of an exhibition race because you can do some fun things you know one of the things. I've always liked about when they they did the truck race at all door is doing the You know the qualifying heats and maybe they can do even with twenty cars. Maybe they do for heats of five cars or five heats of four far. Let me just spitballing then idea here. Because you've got to figure out how you're going to do this format and you want all of your big name drivers there so i don't think you may see a just we're going to have this is gonna be the pole sitter in the year before it might be a thing where you go to the the rta and say if you own a charter we want you in this race and you take thirty six cars you divide them up into to heats you take the top ten from each heat you got twenty right there so thirty six at twenty and then you have a couple of races you make it a tv event two heat races. Maybe a last chance even you can do like. Tom said you can do some a hooligan. We haven't had one of those for betting. Man remember door those kind of moments though that driver giving another driver the middle finger on national tv because he missed out on the the main event. I'm sorry that that is a that is a water cooler moment in fox's graded producing big of them. They absolutely are. This would be right in their backyard. It'd be perfect. Do we know when the schedule for next year is coming out well and i guess that i guess it's got to be determined by then. Yeah i mean the the latest is by the end of this month. I would expect probably within the next week to two weeks or so is what i'm hearing but again that's a moving target and it has moved a few times so right now. That's the goal but these things are fluid as they always. Yes they are all right when we come back. Speaking of drivers giving other drivers the middle finger we did have one driver that said a few choice words on the air the other night for television. But that's not what he's getting fined for. We'll talk about that. Rally borders.
