Two Thousand Fourteen seventy year old Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling called his mistress. The Steve Yano. He had seen something on instagram. That made his blood boil a picture of her and L. A. Lakers legend Magic Johnson but sterling wasn't mad at Steve Yano had posed with one of his crosstown rivals iconic players. The problem was the Johnson was Black Sterling. Chewed out still beyond for almost ten minutes. He had no idea. Those ten minutes would change his life forever. Welcome to sports. Criminals are cast original. This is the twenty fifth episode in our March Madness. Special this month were counting down the top thirty one sports scandals from Nineteen Ninety to two thousand twenty on Carter Roy. And I'm Tim Johnson in today's episode. We're going back to two thousand fourteen and the downfall of the La Clippers racist owner Donald Sterling. Although he made a lot of money from owning the clippers. Donald Sterling made the bulk of his fortune in real estate as a landlord. He was the subject of numerous lawsuits accusing him of housing discrimination against minorities during these proceedings. Sterling's racist nature was laid bare. He told employees that black tenants smell. And Attract Vermin Hispanics. Just smoke drink and hang around the building in Koreans will pay the rent and live in whatever conditions I give them. The married father of three was also sued on multiple occasions for sexual harassment. But with the help of a high priced and highly effective legal team. He managed to emerge relatively unscathed however after not. Enzi released the recording his phone. Call with these veon. On April twenty fifth two thousand fourteen. No lawyer on earth COULD HELP HIM UPSET THAT STEVE. Yano had posted an instagram photo of her and Magic Johnson. Sterling told her. It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you're associating with black people. Don't put him on instagram. And don't bring him to my games. Unbeknownst TO HIM STILL. Yano had recorded the entire conversation. The recording confirmed what most people around the League already knew. Donald Sterling was racist scumbag however he had never faced disciplined from the NBA before. But now that is true. Nature was caught on tape that was about to change with NBA players contemplating boycotting playoff games to protest. Sterling's ownership commissioner. Adam silver had to act on April twenty ninth. "Mvp when he won at MVP trophy over over the Chicago. He actually did something amazing especially since he didn't in Chicago remember. He Won. Defensive played a year and he won. Mvp in the finals now he's added. Mvp. St also only other president who has done. That was Michael Jeffrey Jordan. And so that's why it happened in Chicago. That was so amazing so I just wanted to go ahead and give it shots quiet but with that we're going to go ahead and jump into ladies night. Yes free agency has taken over the WMBA. Things are moving things are happening and yes my number one free agent signing that actually took place had me in a frenzy. I've taken this one team literally. Dave was making golden state moves. So first we're going to go ahead and jump in and we're GonNa talk about Rebecca Brunson. Rebecca Brunson retired from the NBA. Is We and the reason why she went ahead and retired from the WNBA was to join the Minnesota Lynx coaching staff? So we'RE THE MINNESOTA LYNX. Coaching after they already have in place damn now went ahead and fortified that staff. You now board on one of one or more players in the wmba to teach others how to be just as dominant now. I smile about this because even though my more sitting out this season there is chances that next season she could be returning now with Rebecca Brunson on the staff and my your war actually in the locker room I think the Minnesota Lynx is going to regain their status to be one of the teams fighting for championship. And so it Kinda makes me smile. You know cause I'm a huge fan of my more. It makes me smart see the Minnesota Lynx of focus it that way and building from within and building what they're doing I I like what I'm seeing now. I WANNA go ahead and jump into the one that I am going crazy. I'd have to write off the debt. Free Agency the Hammy going. Crazy was the Mercury Phoenix. Mercury Day. Were doing some moves and they were making some most. They're going to be the team to watch. And if you don't know who to Phoenix Mercury is yes that is the team with Diana's Rossy and Britney Grinder and great news is Brittany griner has re signed with Mercury. That is great news. And if you think that. Is it not in clippers style fashion? Where the richest getting richer? Because Diana's harassing Brittney griner. You like mail. We got a team this year but no in a trade they have acquired skyler diggins. I think it can't get better this. This is absolutely phenomenal. But guess what did it in talks right now. To acquire team. Charles is absolutely insane. Isn't that going to be fair is going to be the WNBA also verse everybody else. This absolutely is so just in case this summer you don't get a chance to see space jam so the Mercury will be performing rendition. Later on it will be beautiful. They'll be all over the country. Doing space jam on court is going to be alive. Thing is going to be beautiful. I'm looking to get a Tony for this one here in that down. It's harass gonNA play Lebron James and this one is going to be amazing. Is Tears for this? This is gonna I cannot wait. Can you imagine that team I will? Arguably Diana's Rossy is Kobe Bryant. Wnba nobody has done it like her. And I know I know let me go back and forth and talk about sue bird. Sue Bird is a is a beast in her own and she did but nobody. Rossy she is. She's one of the most fair basketball players I've ever came across. I can see where people come up play defense. They're nervous like how people were nervous with Jordan. Please do please do this to me. Please don't do this to me. She does it to you. Then you have Brittney griner who as big who will be the most dominating big that you've seen the sense actually simpler shack. She's pretty much. She can do whatever she wants whenever she wants. And the whole way. The game is played around her. She's so powerful that she dominates goes right to the hope. Now you add you add a wing. Today that can slice dice and get buckets. Any way to she wants you. Add that Skyler diggins. How do you defend what marry which defend? What could you do to get the right things in place to defense? Oh that is that is going to be a match that I wanNA see yourself now. Let's jump over Atlanta Dreams? Because I can talk about the mercury all day literally I could go on. All Day actually spoke about that for about a half hour wants to trade was made as talking to a friend of mine. Who doesn't even like basketball and I talked about if so which I could probably go for another show all right. So that's about the Atlanta dream. They picked up A. Let's his Jones off waiver. And I like I think that's a good pick up for them. Andy also sign Sakina of Franklin. Now that's GonNa make them competitive. I cannot say that they're going to be in the top like the top four teams coming out right now but hands down. That's GonNa make them competitive. You gotta shooter you gotTa Shooter Shaquille. She's GonNa be a scoresheet the bucket right there but yes. Talk about my aces. Yeah I saw I. We picked up off of free aged. Danielle Robinson that was awesome pick. I liked her. I liked her. She signed with the aces. I'm happy but guess who reside one of my favorite aces. My kids favorite as is actually my one of my daughters one of my daughter's favorite plays and her team actually. This is one of my older daughter's favorite place. She my team. They follow her. This is a girl. Rogers yes the sugar is back in Vegas. I tell you should sugar rodgers has reside with the aces and I am super happy about it because I love watching her play and be able to wash the players a hometown fan. I think that's going to be amazing. Now we always stop every always listened to see which is going to beat a team. That's going to compete against the team that we're talking about by team sedated. I'm talking about is the mercury and I wanNA know who's them and compete against them because only one team that has not one team but there's many teams right now sitting in place to really put open Bam more really actually put up a fight with them the aces you have the sparks and of course you have to rein in championship. The radiant champions mystics. Yes the mystics has actually put ink to paypal because I reported on this show but they were in talks and Ella were Emma. Annalena worrying talks of actually resigned with the mystics. But now they're put pen to paper Yes. Amusement and Elena Della Dom has resigned. What mistakes and is going to be another fight and Mercury's giving up is GONNA be ready. I absolutely amazed by this. I'm loving it I absolutely love it. I can't wait till the WB START. This has been so exciting. The moves of the NBA. Making I've been watching these moves all week along with the also game is has been a great weekend just for basketball on a whole now that brings me to the next segment. We call shady or genius. Yes Sir I'll my topic of Shadier we're going to discuss the cavaliers and Andre Drummond. His Andre Drummond was faded to the cavaliers. Reportedly he was not happy with the actual trait. Now why getting of course is not as teammates. He was very happy with the team he city had. He actually made him so vocal by stated that he would not resign with the cavaliers. If they had kept the coach John Now John Bellini has had a very short tenure with the cavaliers fifty four games but from day one he just has not been the right fit for them. I'm talking that locker. Room has completely broken down the players on their saying that. There's a syncing coaches on staff that are more qualified to be head coaches and the head coach. He's gotten into verbal disagreements with the players Publis skirmishes where players and media is just was not a good fit. As a matter of fact there's been reports even stated that he was absolutely miserable there now reason why shady genius is because we knew that what. I do personally why Andre Drummond would not want to play for John Bleeding is not somebody. He has faith. It was pretty much a worse situation. He added Detroit at least Detroit with building within a direction and he cannot do not WanNa have now cavaliers with leading John Bellini go as of today because they wanted to wait till after the all star break so today Wednesday they have decided to go ahead and let him go. I believe is February nineteenth. So just in case anybody's wondering what today is right. So they decided to go ahead and part ways with John believe now J. Bickerstaff who was on his assistant on there as well as a little better coaches and NBA will be taken his place. Not said immediately is going to be changes in Cleveland and things are going to get better and Cleveland right away but right now the locker room was gonna feel different and I think this is going to her. A lot of other college coaches looking to make that jump into the MBA is a different animal. There's plays here who are not happy with players. That are not doing or coach. That are not doing the right thing. I put this on shadier genius because I have to understand was Andre Drummond out in John Bellini like that right when he was reported to be fired was that just a shady move on his part was he being genius stated that now Cleveland. You can go ahead and go ahead and take a shot at signing me now. We all know that Andre drove. His contract does not make favorable to be signed by a lot of other put a lot of other teams. So could he just be playing catamounts? So this is something that we want to look into. So that's why I put it on Shadia Genius so we will be watching you. Andrei and we'll be watching the Cleveland Cavaliers J. Bickerstaff. You have a tough job ahead of you to turn things around but honestly being for the fact that you are pretty much stuck. Team is in Cleveland and has bought a championship there in thirty years. I think pretty safe. You know have like a car body get over at this point so that was shady a genius and I'm GonNa go ahead and take a break because I have a special guest coming in today for our segment cake so I want you to hang around with me. I'm cody drew. And this is the world of basketball. Stick around on the ball court actually. I kinda wanted low chairs that this would but the table because we're going to put the matter. Yes thirteen yes..

Shortest NBA Career, Ever

"Royce. It's been exactly ten years this Saturday since James Names on curry who I should note is not related to Steph curry made his NBA debut. I found this story fascinating. Because here's a guy who has seemingly on on the cusp of achieving all of his dreams. And then poof it's over. He's out of the League. How did you go about finding him? It was a really long on kind of winding path to it and it was somewhat of a passion project. Part of me was I was kind of scared. That's a story outside my comfort zone a little a bit to just completely cold call somebody and track them down and find out because you know on the other side of it. You're going to see like the story is three point nine seconds right and then it's open ended after that. Where's he at? What's he doing is the jailing does he oversees? He'd still trying to play basketball. I have no idea you you can put these stories in your mind. I kinda WanNa know about that. And then they kind of just sort of get lost in the shuffle and you keep thinking about it and you keep wondering about it. And that's what level with me is that finally it was like you know what I'm going to find out about this and I got kind of approval to pursue this story and at that time it was like okay. We don't know where he's at. You know he could be still playing professional basketball somewhere in like Moscow or Turkey. You're the Israel or wherever and it just so happened that when I finally got in touch a to a James on curry through instagram of all places. Because that's how you are a reporter in two thousand twenty. He got back to me and he told me to call them and I said so. Where do you live now? And he told me he lived in ended Oklahoma. which just so happened to be an hour away from me so sad to say I mean up? My editors were quite happy that the travel budget got significantly reduced instead of flying to Moscow or something had to drive up the road. Enid so Royce you reach out to James on you find out. He lives near you. You can get his story you were drawn to his story because he had the shortest career in NBA history. Three point nine seconds. Did he know that when I approached him very much so if you type it in on Youtube if you type in his name. There's a video out there that somebody made and it's got over a million views or something like that and it's kind of like a awhile did you fact in the NBA and James on understood that he was basically the answer to a trivia question and not a flattering trivia. Your question was he a highly touted recruit so james on Curry was really a household name Nina and so much so that in North Carolina lineup basketball history. He's a true legend. He scored more points in high school than Michael Jordan ever heard of them. James Worthy David Thomson and he said that record and he was a five star recruit. He was committed in North Carolina. He was a big big deal and people from all around the state would come to watch him play. He was routinely scoring forty thirty. Five fifty fifty five points at night. He had a dedicated beat reporter that would come and follow him around. He was destined to be the next Great College Basketball Player order and thereby the next grade professional basketball player so from there does he get all the offers two big schools fast track to the NBA. Say He did have the office. Everybody recruiting him. It was it was set up for him to go play for Roy Williams at North Carolina and lead them to national championships and get drafted. Be One and done player go the NBA. All that type of stuff was set up for him to happen. The crazy Roese thing about it was. He plays a game against Graham High School and I think he scored forty seven in that game is team was on the fast track to a state title and the next morning. He shows up at school and he gets called into the principal's office so he walks down the hall. He walks in the principal's office and he sees a bunch of police officers officers in there. And he thinks that they're in there. Because I want to ask him for an autograph and instead of that they put him in handcuffs. James on was caught selling drugs to an undercover cop. James is on sold him. Marijuana and his total take Fort Meena was ninety five dollars so while he was dropping shopping. forty-seven on Graham High School. They were printing up a warrant for his arrest. So at that point everything completely changed from didn't take long for North Carolina to pull his scholarship. He was kicked out of school kicked off the basketball team. He finished high school at an alternative school and really at that point just didn't know if he was going to get another chance. So what does he decide to do. Angst as you might believe since he was so so good some other schools got involved but this kind of random place jumped out to him and really kind of hooked victim and that was Oklahoma State University and part of what Oklahoma State had to sell for him was their coach. Eddie Sutton was a recovering alcoholic and he understood second chances and of course he brought him to Oklahoma state because first of all he's really good second of all because he saw something in James on and thought it was worthwhile taking that shot on. So how does he we do. When he gets to Oklahoma state he was good? There was a game where he was playing in Madison Square Garden. Achieving his dream they're playing against Syracuse. And he was part of a big second half running Ron and three on the insist this cowboys happily Dick. Vitale called him a diaper Dandy and it was a dream come true feeling feeling this outboard played one of the greatest games in all time in college basketball history at triple overtime game against Kevin Durant and Texas. The Dow Jones scored forty something Durant scored forty something and it's known as to be one of the Great Games it starts getting you know. Draft Talk. Scouts are coming to watch him play so it all kind of felt like it. It had come together for James on and he was going to have a shot after all. So curry gets drafted by the Bulls. What happens next? So it shows the Bulls and he's he's sent down to the D. League. He's brought backup. He sent back down. He's brought backup. He's bouncing back and forth and in his mind. He's he's not really getting his chance. And he the as a couple incidents that again pop-up form one. He was at the D. League showcase in Idaho and he gets busted on public urination and gets arrested for it the Bulls suspend them one game. And now it's like you know he's got another thing kind of tagged with them there and here's another incident where he's driving to the airport in Chicago Gago. He says he gets lost on the way to the airport and he misses his flight. Going to New York. And that's another strike from the Bulls and in his mind that that was one that like they couldn't get over over. There was a time where their coach Scott Scales kind of told the team this practices an open tryout for playing time and he felt like he showed everybody up he was he was crushing it. He killed everybody thirty. On the court. And the scrimmage and Scott pulled him aside and I think that scowls thought it was a compliment but it really wasn't at least not to James on but he said you're going to be the best player in the D. League and and that kind of crush James on spirits and GE just goes through the season and he just never gets a chance with them and they end up cutting them after the year so he gets cut by the Bulls else and after that he's bouncing around the Euroleague D. League teams. How does he make his way back to the NBA? Hey bounces around. He gets them chances and he gets drafted. He's actually the first draft pick ever for the Bakersfield Jam. There the D League affiliate for the Los Angeles Clippers Clippers and he's doing great becomes a D. League all star and he finally gets his call he gets the call. Uh what happens next so he gets a call up and suit up for the clippers there in Boston. They're playing the Celtics. It's late third quarter. There's some foul trouble issues. Injury issues for Rondo now. The final possession for the Boston Celtics. The James on gets says number called Mike Dunleavy says game with three point nine seconds ago. There's three point nine seconds left on the clock in the third quarter James on jumps up runs runs the scores table and look look comes in James on Curry Hey is first appearance ever in an NBA game. What a thrill? It's gotTa be dream fulfilled hears his my name called out in the arena runs out on the court. He's guarding region. Rondo Sri couldn't have expected it right at this moment a week ago. I sure didn't expect Eddie. There's a quick play run. Not much happens doesn't touch. The ball doesn't do anything other than just kind of stand there with a half. The A reasonable job lookers pretty happy to be down by only five buzzer. Sounds runs off the court and De'andre Jordan. Subs is in for him to start the fourth quarter and he never steps on the floor again and like literally never because the next morning he wakes up. "NBA find the LA clippers fifty thousand dollars coach doc rivers said Kawhi Leonard he didn't start I'm he is the league city was injured coach **** said for you know actually you it was fine he was okay he was great in fact now should you should should superstars be been particularly early in the season because a coach maybe only meaning to be conscientious wants to save them for important games further on in the season and the playoffs yeah I understand the perspective the NBA season is a grind is very very long season just starting out in October you get to the playoffs and in late April and in the playoffs last two months of the regular the post season doesn't even end until almost July so I understand the in in the the impulse I all I also understand when you're a culture attitude is look you're paying me to win important games yeah you're paying me to win championships especially when you're at the Los Angeles Clippers where you get Kawhi Leonard from Toronto you win Ching who just won a championship a few months ago and the end goal for the clippers is to be hosting that trophy a few months from now I also understand from a consumer standpoint which is where if you're gonna pay a hundred and fifty Bucks a ticket to go see the best players play then for that one game that you're going to you want to see Kawhi Leonard against genesis and cumple which is which was the match up you had the Milwaukee Bucks team at the supposed to go to the NBA finals against the clippers team that is supposed to go to the NBA finals and so if you're the paying customer you show up at the at the arena and that match that's not gonna happen that's that's a bitter pill that's the reason why you paid to all those all that money yeah I mean the NBA sells itself as entertainment and you know great entertainer show up show up when the curtain goes up well exactly and the bottom line on that is if your doctor is if you're the coach you thinking to yourself okay what are you gonna remember more are you gonna remember me not playing Kawhi Leonard in in November or you gonna remember Kawhi Leonard not being healthy and ready to go when the big game start when the playoffs begin

"On the air for a couple of weeks. I want to be very very clear. I believe the Los Angeles. Clippers have the best S. T.. I think the way that they're pieced together. Come postseason time Los Angeles Clippers cannot be ignored. They simply can't but I watched the Portland Trailblazers pickup parasol other day. I know Nurkic is going to be back. I believe in Damian Lillard Dame Tom and C._J.. mccollum and I like what I'm seeing from Portland. That can't be ignored. They were in the Western Conference finals last year. Let's not ignored them. I'm looking at the Golden State Warriors and the acquisition of Willie Cauley Stein. It's something I don't think it'd be an estimated. This dude is a thoroughbred. He's a greyhound. He can run the floor could block shots. He's athletic. He certainly an upgrade from demarcus cousins in in terms of his athleticism and his activity and I think that coupled with a healthy return of Klay Thompson with Steph curry with a d. ngelo Russell Withdraw Green. I would not sleep on the Golden State Warriors if I'm Andre Dollar and I'm looking to get bored out by the Memphis Grizzlies I wanna go to the lake is more so than anybody else but I'm hearing. The clippers are very interested in him along with others. We'll see what happens. Even though the clippers might have the best roster roster I will tell you the Lakers have the best duo. There is no boot duo graded in Lebron James Anthony Davis you can scratch that jury. There is no dual and basketball. That's usually all you need that is why would tell you the Lakers favorites even though they could get knocked off them our favorites in the Eastern Conference Philadelphia's favorite because vise Harris coming back Jimmy Butler GonNa Miami <hes> Ben Simmons working. Let's jump shot Joylin be trying to get healthier acquiring Josh Richardson in the Jimmy Butler trade. I got news few sixes can't be ignored. I think Milwaukee's GonNa take step back because of the people that they've low mainly Brogden to Indiana but just looking at it across the lines. I gotTa tell you if I had to pick it. It wouldn't surprise me at all. If the Philadelphia seventy the sixers met. The Los Angeles Lakers in the N._B._A.. Finals wouldn't surprise me at all it at eight say E._S._P._N.. It's edited seven to nine three seven seven.

"Jerry west is buying all the Cooley running the Los Angeles Clippers right now he gets Kawhi Leonard Kawhi Leonard gets Paul George they keep Patrick Beverley they got things going to Los Angeles the Lakers in the clippers should be good at the same time he called into the Dan Patrick show on Monday and said this about the clippers and how they're running things Ian Fitzsimmons Steve Balmer as an owner is willing to spend on players he's willing to spend all personnel within the front office I've never been around any organization that is better than this one that's for sure end quote direction not fired at their their roommates at staples center in where it a tad he is a world champion he is the logo he was the man calling the shots there they decided no we don't we're gonna give you one percent ownership no is there nothing nada zilch he goes to Memphis build the Grizzlies into a playoff team then goes to Golden State as a result it nine draft some guy named Steph curry removes for Klay Thompson then it leaves their after building that then goes to the clippers and now look what he's done good morning how we doing it I tell you I don't know if he's the greatest MBA executive ever but you can make the case based on what you just said about the clippers that's off the top of my head I maybe missed excel no you don't clippers Lakers Golden State in Memphis may all for those franchises better as an executive as great as a player as he was in the NBA people forget that he actually played the NBA based on what he's done as an executive with four different franchises he is the logo and I know we went to a lot of NBA finals lost most of them one one but he's still the logo it has a bill Russell in this all this guy hanging around they're kind of have a checking those dudes and Sam Jones yeah about kind of a problem yeah Jerry west is great he did have those guys some good honey Marbach coaching about right and by the Lakers once grows you had him yet Elgin Baylor will go go's ridge will got there a little bit late after he played the Philadelphia seventy Sixers the Lakers were devoid of talent this every year he has rented those boys in Boston they can get past the bill Russell the boys kept collecting rings out but the Prada West Virginia Jerry west he he he that was a direct shot in kick to the coal hole needs of his former employer in a place where it is I think deep down he would've the would've wanted and didn't want to stay now he just wants to beat the hell out of him and that that you couldn't have a more I just a more painful just punch to the gut or the now others them that from the logo at you it's in our the Lakers it's not as painful because you have lebron James and Anthony Davis if they have those two guys I'm talking about Jeanie Buss and an ownership and the front office I mean that that's that's Jerry bleep in west man that's Laker legend you think they care and he say in this is the best of ever been a part of many here everything Freddie you know that I I know they hear everything if it's it was that's in Freddy Cohen that's me Freddie effort Simmons and ESPN radio ESPN radio dot com and ESPN that yeah they hear everything and they're very sensitive about that but they still don't regard the clippers as a threat to them because the clippers have never been a threat to them in that city they are now the clippers can win four five championships in a row Los Angeles mark my words the headline would be what do the Lakers need to do the stop the clippers in doing this or what do the Lakers need to do to make sure they get to the same level that the clippers are equipped Jerry west knows that you're going to do anything you can that people go Hey look at us over here look what we're doing in a Lakers city that's always going to be a Lakers town and he doesn't care that that's the headlines as long as he beats them that's all he cares about right now what he wants to beat Big Brother I'm not doubting that and you're exactly right but he also knows no matter what we do they're still going to roll things he work for the organization he knows the Lakers won the NBA not just the city of Los Angeles as they go everything else falls with the Los Angeles Lakers and the same you could say the same thing in Easton side when it comes to the Boston Celtics so if I'm Jerry west that would be the exact thing I would say as a little brother trying to get under the skin of Big Brother right now Jerry west is trying to pants Big Brother so I buy can look a little closer all eyes in the queue is that sweet Hey Big Brother don't knock your little brother side the head you have to be a better person than that I mean my little brother could eat until they try something again that's what Jerry west is doing right now and I don't blame for that one second and this is going on in two cities right now a Lisa Lisa Lakers have lebron and Anthony Davis and Kuzma right and they did a pretty good job of surrounding those guys with other players not bad rebelling you know but the clips you look at that that roster with their top to I'm going with those boys in the logo man the clothes in me a bit about it's also sure another little brother right in the NBA and the Brooklyn nets have done the same thing too big bro and the New York Knicks in but the nextone have no name me thing nope to try and fight off the nets starting next not this year but next season put it this way in that city even next season Kevin Durant carry Irving that is always still going to be a nextel yep it no matter where they don't care all they want to do right and you know you should go to your point that's a great point I would never concern myself with what somebody else is doing if I'm the clippers whatever shot there was a loss and his legs you got to handle your business as a clippers organization if you're the Brooklyn nets it's not even about the New York Knicks it's not even about them right now they're not even in the same stratosphere as your basketball team so what ever you do is going to be progress unless you don't win a championship and the Knicks keep getting better and you don't then it's going to be S. O. N. same old nets and that's the last thing you want to hear but in this in those cities when you know you're the number two it's not about trying to get the B. number one is about what you're going to do is an organization to be better than what you were the nets have done it the clippers have done I'm not making that about the Lakers for the Knicks if either one of those franchises they don't exist me as far as I'm concerned with Jerry west did today on the Dan Patrick show and Jerry west didn't even take a shot across the bow that was a direct shot fired any connected to in a duet with an organization that I don't I I II everything you hear you read mail I don't know I've never talk to Jerry west about it but people have in when they said now we're done we're good here in so long take your pumpkin he's been warning pay back every way he could possibly get it and he's got it would Golden State and now he's looking to do it in the same building a against big bro and he wants is a sweet revenge and let me tell you he gets it that's going to be a remarkable taste on his pallet Jerry west has never been the kind of guy that has said look at me look at me look at me if they're able to win the NBA championship you will not be able to wipe the smile off his face all units is nothing but teeth from Jerry west that it Hey Joe how you doing his go look like the joke of the first Batman that's going to be Jerry west if they win a championship in that building with the Lakers still there the Lakers trying to be where they used to be they have not made the playoffs in the last six years if I put a clipper banner up in those rafters all that purple and gold this is just the mere thought of them I'm I'm picturing that in my mind right now can you imagine that one clippers banner there's more W. N. B. A.'s like an LA sparks yes sparks banners than than clipper banners in that building I'm not joking no that's why that's why I'm laughing I'm going to hang a big is gold clipper banner in there I had the band a cover from scoreboards scoreboard just to get on the Lakers last nerve if I wanted Steffi superfight with the clippers bait okay the what what is that a flag knows the clippers Sampras a banner as cover the whole damn arena yeah that's what they want it and that's what they're going to get it's the ball has billions of dollars though what the owner wants the owner is going to get either way is going to be a lot in just in the NBA you don't have to wait until Christmas day that's going to happen from the jump with all these new faces in different places and what's going to happen Kawhi the clippers car with the Brooklyn nets at cetera et cetera et cetera using if it's some of the Freddie Coleman and Freddie and Fitzsimmons is talking to take over the network and be a part of the frenzy whatever's on.

Thunder trade Russell Westbrook to Rockets for Chris Paul, picks

"The Oklahoma City thunder have agreed to trade Russell Westbrook to the Houston Rockets for Chris Paul first round picks in twenty twenty four and twenty twenty six swabs in twenty twenty one and twenty twenty five while so I actually ended up being right on this now okay see wasn't just gonna do a salary dump they were just gonna settle for anything along those lines and shots like that the thunder get two more first round picks in twenty twenty four twenty twenty six and they can pick slop in twenty twenty one and twenty twenty five the problem for them is they got to take Chris Paul on which his contract is a literally one of the worst in all of sports our and let me see if I can pull it up real quick here it's about the same almost as Westbrook's if I'm not mistaken okay only three more years offer him the final year being a player option but he makes thirty eight million this year forty one the next and then a player option for forty four gotta believe he's going to pick up that player option but wow think about how bad the Houston Rockets hated Chris Paul to give up two first round picks in to pick swaps just to give the hell out of town and bring in Russell Westbrook incredible in think about the funder you just acquired five first round picks from the Los Angeles Clippers four of which are unprotected and you just picked up two more first round picks and two more pics swaps wow or the thunder gonna be able to do a hell of a reset here holy crap I'd love to hear your reactions this do you feel like the pistons missed an opportunity potentially to bring in Russell Westbrook I am still on two four eight five or nine ninety seven ninety seven to get taxed is it nine seven one three six the other side of the argument is we're not doing radio in Houston right now but this doesn't work I don't think James harden needs the ball in his hands Russell Westbrook needs the bonus hands like that was the biggest question mark last year if you remember a couple years ago when Chris Paul join the Houston Rockets ever was like well I don't know if that's gonna work policy at the play off the ball harden gonna have the ball in his hands I don't know those two can make it happen and they really weren't able to they did for one season and then Paul got hurt for that game seven against the warriors in you know we we all know what happened next but Russell Westbrook and James harden together I don't know if I like this deal like the rockets are going forward clearly they're trying to win a championship but is adding Russell Westbrook really the the move here does that make them a title contender I think they're exactly the same unbelievable I mean the NBA offseason I know Adam silver came out and said all they got to fix some things in the tampering department and blah blah blah like this player movement is incredible it really is Russell Westbrook gone wow incredible apparently Westbrook wanted it a reunion with James harden that's according to whoa ge who said Sam Presti worked with Westbrook in his agent they wanted to send him to his preferred destination which OCC clearly it was the Houston Rockets it was not the Miami Heat as was being reported all along but while incredible two four eight five three nine ninety seven ninety seven to get text is at nine seven one three six as a pistons fan clearly okay see wasn't even necessarily worried about a salary dump they were just they just wanted to move Russ somewhere because clearly they felt bad about dumping Paul George wow apparently the thunder aren't finished trading either they'll continue to find new homes for Steven Adams Dennis Schroder and Andre rover since so the thunder totally revamping everything it's gonna be Chris Paul and what Shea guilders Alexander I see the whole team incredible do you think the pistons missed an opportunity here not a great deal for okay see necessarily because you gotta take Chris Paul's contract back they could still end up dealing with luxury tax issues but okay CD grab a couple of first round

"And of course that became a six game series that everybody was going. How is this happening? You know, the clippers are pushing the warriors to limit, sir. How much of you rewatch that shot what that in for you? Yeah. It was a big shot on my career with what was riding on it. And you know when it happened, where it happened, especially being on the road. I think those moments are that much more special on the road to me. Just because you can like I remember hitting it in like feeling and hearing like the energy is kinda sucked out of the building. Like I. Everybody all wants Domino's. Cool and then like the time out going back celebrating with, like your teammates stuff. But yeah, I mean that was that was huge. I had the our front office our business office with the clippers. They actually had it printed out on, like a canvas for me. Like the next day in my locker, which is cooler. So it was I don't know. It was it was cool. But if anything I mean, it just gave me like that was around one, you know, like, what's it feel like inside that? And, you know, around to the Western Conference finals or something or the finals, you know, so it's like you know, it made me just kind of, like want more. I think in in that's the biggest thing that it did for me. But it was still one of the best memories. I think I've had in my yeah, my life. No as awesome. Where's that hanging now? It's still in LA, waiting to be hung when I get my new place. So he's still a home shopping this, this summer home shopping. Yeah. I guess you really didn't have time back in February. I was in hotels, man. I was so done with. I can't wait till you the place. They keep it short and simple you I can only imagine being nice to settle in, you know, you're going to buy. Well, that's mine. Not a hotel room. I recommend close to the beach house. Yeah. Yeah. There you go. Get Manhattan beach your most I lived in Hermosa back. Many players anywhere down there, anywhere in the south bay. There's like to me the, the, the point of being in L A is being by the. Yeah, that's why. Right. Yes, we. Yeah. Same page man. Got to do it right. Was there last thing last was there a welcome to l a moment or a or your best LA moment celebrity, citing somebody you met during during the game sitting courtside anything like that? I mean Russell Crowe sitting behind our bench, one game Ford was talking shit to me thirty game I see came to a lotta Yancey Kenmore clippers games than I thought I didn't know he's a lot of clippers games footmen with. Yeah. But he was talking to me one game. So I think. I know it's LA though, like you see a lot of it like it's kinda the point where it's like normal. Now seen all these people I had dinner and I was sitting next Halle Berry, that's Halle Berry. But yeah. I think when Floyd though, when he was like, talking crazy to me during one of the games, I some guarding somebody, and he hit like a tough shot on me and Floyd just like the whole way back down the court for whatever reason was just yelling hand down man down at me. So like five times, I'm like, what? But it was just like a funny like found. No, I've still not sure what that means. I've never understood it when Mark Jackson setup. So. Yes. You know her to five times. It's funny. Oh, good stuff. Well, I knew I gotta get you gotta here and you got plenty to do. Enjoy your week in.

"But you kinda snuck up on people in twice, then both in the draft and then again, just in terms of your rookie year and your emergence with the clippers and everything what, what do you think it is that people have constantly kind of, like not seen right off the bat that you that you've kind of surprised them with always kind of been, like, like in high school? Those very I mean, I was kind of under recruited in my opinion like I'm in Kansas as backyard, and they never never rolled around. And I didn't have all the like high profile recruiting, you know, whatever didn't have any of that going on, even in my City Kansas city, there was we had, it's called the. Reynaud award. And I think I've finished third. It's like the player of the year in Kansas City, Kansas City area think I finished third that year behind, you know, one guy who's, you know, I know I'm better than and then, you know, a couple of years, we only talk about that. Did either of them make the league? No. All right. So two guys two guys officially have you for this coveted award are not in the NBA. So I mean that's always been a chip. I mean even in my own city where I'm from where you'd think you know, you know. You know, you would get the recognition, you might feel like you deserve or whatever, you know, that's always been a chip in mind that I was never viewed as the best player, even in my city, so from they're going forward. I was like, you know, just in my car is, this is how I now I'm gonna roll obviously in college or whatever, you know, throughout I was never highly touted and then in the NBA I mean I just don't have like the sexiest game, and I'll be honest, I can say that in admitted like I know that I don't do all the flashy dunks and the passes and all that crazy stuff, like, you know, a lotta guys might do that make them more attractive more notable or whatnot. I think I just do my job and I can find ways to like fit, and mold into whatever role is needed me. I think I've proved that, you know, from being recruited as to which state doing well in that role making the transition midway through season, the play point guard doing well in that role playing point, you're out a whole year in my you know what was expected on me. That year goes up by responsibilities. Up minutes to go up. Facilitating playmaking running our team, get drafted role is flipped on its head again, you know, I'm playing off the ball. I think it's just like of kind of proven I can fit whatever role is needed them and be versatile, you know. So I think that's kind of the biggest thing that's gotten me to where I am. If you before it gets you out of here best advice, you got from one of the vets. I mean, I know you spend a lot of time with JJ Radic when you were in Philly, you had great vets in L A. Of course Mitch Pat Beverley Lou Williams, these guys best advice, you got over the course your rookie season. And the worst advice you got..

"Negro and room to grow the Nassar. Yeah, for sure. I mean you I mean we're all young. Yeah. Only vets are seat Lewin gal this, this is. So this, this is the thing that you don't have to take this like. But if I if I were the clippers if I were you guys this, this is where I'd go negative campaigning, go low. I'd be like Yokoi great great season with Toronto man team. Great franchise messiah did a wonderful job, Nick nurse great. You know, Marcus all he's like. He's like seventy two years old you go. Count calories. These warmup is bingo skills, man, I'd go low. I'd be like they're getting a little old, but our guys look shea Lou Landry all these young men. We got we got all the world all the growth in the world. That's, that's, w my pitch me mean we're young. Like you said. So you didn't take that you can let let docked St. on. Yeah, there's a they have to have to go low, I guess, whatever. But it's a good. But it's it is it is I think that is the beauty of what the clippers have built what Lawrence, Franken staff have done right now is like they've put you guys in a really great position if you free agency doesn't work out, or at least at the star level, there's so much room flexibility for you guys to, to keep packing on the Tobias trade was interesting part of that, because when they dealt him as you alluded to everybody said, all right. Well, let's it clippers are pulling the plug. They're going to be out that was how we all thought like all the that was my first thought to like when I was traded I was like man like I'm on a guaranteed playoff lock. Playing can be honest and I you know like again like before the trade I was naive. I say it all the time. I just didn't know. I didn't have the best feel over everything I was worried about just I'm in my role in Philly. I'm doing this, and that and that was my first thought clippers and I'm thinking you know, like the clippers like what like when it first happened because I didn't know about the team, the make up who these guys were what they're about. And then once I got there to that first game. That's all it took for me to realign everything I was just like okay like this new this. We're not a team that was pulling the plug. We were getting beat by twenty eight on the road in Boston. Yeah. Right after the trade deadline, you know how easy out have been to just throwing the towel. I you know, man like next year first game back from trade like that big trade like that read blow your whole team up and you're getting beat by basically thirty and we come back and win in Boston on the road. And I knew a halftime, you know, we were down twenty eight and none of the is looked like panicked. Pat was pissed off. He was talking animated Tresors pissed off talking animated. That's just the Lewis for the normal. Yeah. Which is like.

"But I mean it is kind of interesting to look at, like, you know, just the dynamic of the business of the NBA, you know, you have new co workers every year, and your team can look completely different. And like you said, I mean, they could go a multitude of ways, but I mean, regardless, you know, I don't have any like I'm the point where I'm not going to lose sleep over something I can't take control. You know, an ultimately today, I'm going to have to come in. We're going to have new players on our team. I'm gonna have to find a way that, you know, get acclimated react. Lamented with these new guys and, you know, progress and better myself with the eyes of already played with. So that's all I really can worry about is just, you know, doing what I gotta do right now, quiet Leonard or not. You know, when I get there in LA, it's the same same goal. We, you know, we want to get past you know where we were last year, you know, obviously progress and we feel like we were in a position where, you know, if we couple balls bounce bounce different ways, you know that, you know, maybe that series goes differently, who knows. I mean you know we, we felt like we were gonna get spot last year. And then if you think you just add one piece or a couple of new guys whatever it is that can take that much further that can maybe change a couple possessions, who know so, yeah, I mean, that's, that's my mindset, regardless going. I have to come in and kind of re re acclimate hard nut to, like think about it, though. Right. Whether it's for sure. Like they free. We all treat it on the outside fans and media, it's almost like a big game. Like it's this big all right? Everybody plugging into Twitter guessing game who's gonna go where right thinking they heard this from this person, and they're going to go here. That's all I get asked about jogging qui- in Kevin. Right. What's going on? It's the one K D with injury. Like I don't I don't know. I don't know. I'm I'm not up there having these conversations. I don't I have no idea. What's going on? And I'm not the type of person, either. Like I don't really have many light connections with, you know, I have like Fred and, and lie. I didn't play you IB or under armor. So I don't know a lot of guys in my draft class like from guys before me, or whatever. Like you're not plugged into the NBA super. Never. Really? Yeah. I'm not I'm not quite there. So which is fine. Like, you know, it's just less things to worry about I guess, but I mean Kendrick Perkins is on TV with sources. He's no, citing sources by the time you've gone through the league at the end by the end you'll have sources goal is. And so, and so told me this and you can count on this happening. Exactly. Yeah. You're going to work. Addition to like your real estate and business preparation over the course of your career, you can work on closing there you go. Get with woes figure it out. Internship. Maybe you're gonna you're gonna do the same as we all do on Sunday. Right. Like, are you going to be I don't know if your your home by then wherever you are. You're probably going to have like the phone in your hands or the up and you're going to be watching. Right. And no, it's going to it for sure. You wanna know what happens. And that's you know, your workplace that affects you directly, you know. So I mean, it'll be it'll be exciting. We'll see what happens. I'm the host of Art Van is three sixty five in our latest division of our podcast. I'll be joined by former uconn hall of fame head coach, Jim Calhoun, Curran, head coach St. Joseph's and is you. "I'm sure so that was cool to like kind of be there rooting for, you know, pass teammate and watching him excel on that level. So there's a lot of fun. Yeah. What did you notice because we always talk about this. Like all right with postseasons different than the regular season, and then the finals, common, it's like well files is a whole different animal. Even then, like the conference finals reading the precedes, your, there's a spectator, you're not in the midst of it, you're not the one with all of that spotlight on you. Everything else, you get to just kind of like have enjoyed as a fan. But did you notice anything about the finals vibe that struck you just? So my personal experience with just like you said radio season, the postseason playoffs round, one Golden State, just the heightened importance of each like you know, possession each quarter. Each you know last four minutes of each quarter. Like everything just goes up not. Much. And, you know, I felt that obviously, and it was superintendents really incense but watching those finals games, you could it was like, not just the importance of each like possession. But he's like ball reversal. Each post feeds screen each like, I mean, everything you kind of feel it's like controlled stress. I in the finals from what I saw like, you know, it's who can handle themselves, the best under you know, that type of pressure knowing okay, this is what we need this possession. You know, kinda understanding your scouting report and you know what we want, and it's there's a lot that goes into it. But I think it's who can kind of handle that, you know, stress the most comfortable way. So I think everything was just heightened by just the intensity, you could feel it in the whole building every fan every player every possession. Everything that anybody did was just that much more important as it's hard to describe, but, yeah, well, an oracle gets, really, really loud, and that's the thing I was like, I mean, I'm not impressed by how loud, it is. Because it was it's like that in. Game fifty two of you know the regular season. So that's just how those fans are. But you know obviously there are some moments where, you know those fans kind of exploded and stuff. But it was cool. It was a big bust out postseason for Fred to. I mean, here's a guy who was not on most people's radar. The casual fan, probably didn't even know who he was. He had some huge moments living a little vicariously through him as a friend and former college teammate. I mean, what did you sense about what that did for him, was there, anything he set along the way that really struck you? I mean he in the coolest thing is just coming off of Canada shooting woes. He was going through, and I remember telling people like everybody was talking about him as if you know he was just if he's not making shots. He doesn't affect the game. I was like, why is he playing the last four minutes of every fourth quarter like he's on the floor of her reason? So people were saying all this stuff about how, you know, he's not playing well my no, he's playing fine. He's just shooting the ball, really bad. Like that's all it is like any busting his ass defensive. He's just not making shots. So I mean the dude he he just. Strives in gets through all of the -versities faces, and I've seen that from, you know, my one year, I did have with them at.

"Him these next three days and it's just like opportunity for me to kind of grow myself explore some things that maybe, you know, that I know I have some interest in and try to expand upon that so excited about that. You know, I think it's important, you know, I'm learning obviously, it's my first NBA offseason but to try to take some time out. To try to develop yourself, not only in the weight room or on the basketball court or with your handle jump shot, but like you know what am I going to do after this in a big picture? It really small window career is over. So, you know that's one thing I'm excited about. And I'm going to, you know, I've I kind of made that commitment to myself, I'm going to try to lock in every summer spend a little bit of my time trying to, you know, better myself in that regard. So I'm excited to kinda just learn and hear from some successful people. So that's most of what I'm doing. I hear this week the most wind up. But that's the big thing that's really cool. I mean, a lot of guys, I think would probably think oh, you know you're young you just got through your rookie season that stuff's way off in the distance. You don't worry about that yet. But you're starting on it early which seems wise to me. Yeah. No, for sure. I think it's important, and, you know, I I left school early. That's another thing. I wanted, you know, finish my degree at some point get that piece of paper, what were you studying in Wichita stas business management? So, you know, and to be honest, you know, that was one of the hard things for me. Academically. I didn't have like, you know, my passion, I didn't know okay? This is what I would want to do basketball. Was it? And I wanted to pick a degree that was kind of broad, where would give me options, you know, potentially down the road. But that's something that's important to me. Hopefully start taking classes, next summer just like even if it's just one of summer, you know, knock it out, and, you know, like a couple of years. So what were the everybody always, there's always some agenda that the team is given you guys in those exit meetings. What a doc and everybody tell you on the way out, like, we, we need you to come back in October with blink. I think they just, you know, the biggest thing was. So a lot of people don't even really remember this. But I was a point guard in college I, I was last year. Like, you know, everybody looks at me this year playing, you know the two off the ball, primarily didn't have the ball my hands. A whole lot was playing without it. And I can do that. And I love my role, but it's I just looked like a completely different player than what I was last year in a different role. So one of the things you know, they were talking about with me was just kind of, you know, bring all that back into my game making plays off the bounce, you know, being more aggressive with, you know, putting the ball on the floor. And you know 'cause I I'll be honest to like in that playoff series. I did feel. I kind of got put in a box like they go and say did a good job of light scouting and defending me and knowing you need to get him off the line, so I'll give them credit but I didn't like how I felt you know kinda boxed in so definitely expanding my game being kind of that secondary ball. Handler facilitator that I know I can't be a point guard next to Shay. In doing more of that. So that was that was the big thing, and obviously, you know, working on my body. I'm not stressing too much about my weight, I'll put weight on when I'm supposed to put weight on. But think overall just refining everything, but the biggest thing was definitely playing with the ball my hands and going back to your roots in that regard..

"Forty eight hour senior NBA writer for Bleacher report. Very pleased to be joined today by one of the top rookies of this past season. That is Landry Shamet of the LA clippers. And if you didn't see that coming the one of the top rookies, and it's Landry Shamet of the clippers. That's okay Landry's, probably okay with that to a guy who's been overlooked as he will tell you most of his career, including all the way back to when he was being recruited or not recruited drafted by the Sixers late in the first round traded in that Tobias, Harris deal and was overlooked throughout, but of course, became a starter for the clippers he's now part of one of the most exciting young backwards in the league with shade. You'll just Alexander clippers, of course, hoping to make big waves in free agency this weekend and Landry Shamet shake guilt, us Alexander Lou Williams that whole crew are definitely an attractive landing spot. Now Landry had a phenomenal rookie season. Especially considering, obviously a lower pick lead all rookies in three point percentage at over forty two percent and had a huge, huge shot of course in game two of the first round against the Golden State Warriors. So just a really eye-opening rookie season. Great guy of really fun to talk to think you're going to really enjoy the interview hill, tell you, what his sales pitch to Kawai, Leonard would be what he learned from JJ, Rettig, JJ, obviously, a great guy to have as a mentor when he first landed in Philly and just some of his is from his rookie year, fun discussion before we get to that. Of course, my weekly plea, I guess, it's a biweekly plea. We're doing this twice a week now. So just my regular episodic plea. If you're not subscribed. Please do. I'm looking up as we speak surprise at Landry Shamet. That's pretty simple. Without further ado. My interview with Landry. Shamet. Now joined in studio by member of the NBA's all rookie second team. And the guy who led all rookies in three point shooting at four to two. That's a really good three point shooting percentage Landry. Shamet. Welcome. Thank you, man. Got to be here. Hell of a rookie season. You've had a little time little space to kind of, like think about, you know, the whole saga drafted by starring in Philly. The trade incredible playoff series that you guys had with the clippers against the warriors were here in late June. It's post draft it's pre free agency. What do you feel now as a, a one year, NBA vet and newly decorated member of the all rookie team? I've been a pro for a year..
