"Step down. He believes that they all should resign. The language that was used and tolerated during that conversation was unacceptable, and it was appalling. Some of their closest allies have called for them to step down. Senator Alex Badia, who went to high school with Martinez, was one of the voices calling for her to step down. So she first stepped down from her council presidency and then altogether resigned from the city council on Wednesday. The two other council members on the recording council member Kevin Daly own and council member gilsa dio have both not yet resigned and that is something that there is just a huge amount of agitate in the city about that fact. "It's international. Anti black racism is international. It's definitely not relegated to the south, and here's the conversation that we need to have. And it's definitely not just relegated to white people. That's who I think is described as racist the most. But particularly in California and doubly so in Los Angeles and I've lived in California multiple times throughout my life. A lot of people in California have had to address throughout generations, anti black racism in other cultures other than white people, particularly in Latino culture and Asian culture in California. And I have many, many close personal friends in California who are both Asian American and Latinos who fight day after day after day against racism against anti black racism, and they are true allies and what a lot of us have asked them to do is to fight against that racism in their own communities. And something happened this weekend. It actually happened a year ago, but we just learned this weekend. That three very influential members of the Los Angeles city council. And by the way, the Los Angeles city council is way too small for a city, the size of Los Angeles, just FYI, they have far far too few members that should be much more like New York where you have dozens of members that represent the entire city instead you get it's almost like a congressional seat where you're representing a million people. It's preposterous. So every seat on the Los Angeles city council is deep influential, but this involved even the city council president. All three of these people that I'm about to talk about are Latino. They're not white. And they are Democrats. They're not Republicans. They're not conservatives. And their anti black racism is as disgusting as anything you'll ever hear from whoever you think about when you think about racism. I'm talking about they were calling black children. Monkeys, black babies, monkeys, they were criticizing the district attorney of Los Angeles. Our friend who we've supported and endorsed and backed George gascon, who is Latino himself, and they said, F him because he supports black people. They literally said this. F him because he's with the blacks. That's like, what? What are we even talking about here? And it went on and on and on. And the whole thing was disgusting. It was actually also a homophobic. They actually talked about some indigenous Americans. That was a long they went on and they went on later in the audio clips that were released. They went on to talk about Armenians. They were just, it was like, a who's who of bigotry. And these three members of the Los Angeles city council, including the city council president, Nouri Martinez, Kevin de Leon, and Gil sedillo, Gil, thankfully, just lost to a dear friend of ours that we endorsed and supported. So gill is on the way out. This is he's got a few months left, but he should be forced to resign and not even serve these remaining months. Nuri Martinez, who was the city council president, says she's stepping down from her role as city council president. That's not what people are calling. You can't be an overt racist and be on the Los Angeles city council period. You need to resign. And Kevin de Leon is not resigned from anything. And so nuri Martinez needs to resign. Kevin deleon needs to resign Gil sedile needs to resign. They all three need to resign. The labor leader, Ron Herrera, again a beloved Latino labor leader. He did resign and far be it for me to commend somebody, but he did the right thing. He stepped down. He saw the pressure and in that moment, at least, he put the labor work, some of the most important work that goes on in the country is California based labor work that sets the trend for the rest of the country. He put labor before himself and resigned. And so I'm grateful that Ron Herrera knew what was best. And he needs to be replaced with somebody that is an antiracist. Nouri Martinez Kevin deleon and Gil cedillo all need to resign. Thankfully there's already a replacement on the way for Gil sedile. But nuri Martinez and Kevin deleon need to resign immediately. And here's the thing. They also talked some really dirty and perhaps illegal stuff about contracts and business and appointments. I mean, there's a lot of stuff going on in that audio. And not only was it gross and racist and unethical, some of the stuff that they talk about could very well be illegal. Immediately an investigation needs to be launched into all three of those city council members. Again, it's in their best interest in the city's best interest for them to resign. But there's a lot that needs to happen. A lot of their decisions and votes need to be investigated because it's clear. That anti black racism goes into the way they make decisions. It's gross. And I guess some of what's frustrating about all of this. And I'm not the only person calling for the resignation. Virtually every leading Democrat in the state from state legislators from United States Congress people, United States senators, the Democratic Party of California and the Democratic Party of Los Angeles to all calling for their resignations. But part of what's frustrating is they've always been racist. We just didn't know it. And so now you get that rare opportunity where someone is being recorded, being racist. But what it shows is, I mean, this is a state, a city controlled completely by Democrats, a state control completely by Democrats. And what happens is, in some ways, you let your guard down about there being racism in politics because we have this very narrow definition of who is racist. And it's not just white people, and it's not just conservatives. It's a lot of people. And sadly, this has, oh, I don't want to say opened an old wound in Los Angeles. Because I don't know that the wound ever healed, but there are deep, deep divides between racial groups in Los Angeles between African Americans and Latinos between African Americans and Asian Americans. And there are good people that I love and respect who have dedicated their entire lives to trying to heal those wounds and bridge gaps. And this is a major setback, but it also is a major opportunity to say, no, no, no, no. We aren't going to stand for this. We're going to we're not only going to oust these men and women, hopefully force them to resign, if not remove them from their positions. But we're going to find new better ways to lead. In an antiracist way, so although it was an evil thing and I'm deeply frustrated for my friend and brother Mike Bonn and a member of the city council, whose two year old son, nuri Martinez literally called black son, called a monkey. It's like, what? What are we talking about? That someone could be so cruel. About another city council members child. It's just disgusting. There's no excuse for it. Her apology fell flat and it was phony and she needs to resign. Find another path, find another career for your life. If this is not going to do. Ah, I've been supporting local leaders, local elected officials and local activists I'm deeply involved in a lot of stuff in Los Angeles, but this is incredibly frustrating. And I'm hoping that today they're going to be some emergency meetings of the Los Angeles city council and I'm hoping that today in very, very soon we'll get some good words about them stepping down. But a shout out to all of you that live in Los Angeles live in California and all of you who care about anti black racism in this country. We got to do better. Take care everybody. Break it down.

"Let's start out with racism. Racism. Teeth Democrats. God. You know, it's often interesting to me. That Democrats are the ones who are claiming that they support black and brown bodies. And all of the stuff y'all hear them say. But yet they are the biggest secret racist folks on Planet Earth. And let me give you a news flash. I want on a flash of news for you real quick. Pow, I want you to I want you to get the news. That white people's racism against black people. In my opinion, is less prevalent than Hispanic against black. See, people that never grew up in a black neighborhood, I didn't grow up in Hispanic neighborhood. You may not be aware of this. But Mexican people in black people don't get along like that. When I was growing up, there was certain words that people that I grew up around, black people would call Mexican people. And it has something to do with their back and it has something to do with water. And what happens if you put water on somebody's back? What does it leave you back? Okay, that's exactly what we used to call people when I was growing up. And the Mexican people stayed on their side, black people stayed on their side, and it was literally no love for the other side in the community. And so for people to just sit and think that black people and white people are the only ones with conflict, you're missing out. Why do you say this, mister Tatum? Because this Democrat, I think, is Martinez, she had to resign as the president of the Los Angeles city council, a day after she was caught on audio, a saying some racist stuff about a white man on the city council in his black son. Now let me just say this. You don't slip and say racist stuff, right? You don't slip and say somebody's kid look like a monkey. And that he's on the side of the blacks. He's with the blacks. That's what she said. He's with the blacks. This is not a misinterpretation of her true intentions, right? It's not like saying, oh man, look at the little monkey. He look like a little monkey and you're just saying he's cute and he's lovable. He's climbing over his mom and dad. Okay, he looks like a monkey. Only racist people believe black people are associated with monkeys. However, if somebody said that and they were misinterpreted, I could see that being a point. But she said that the kid looked like a monkey, F him, he's with the blacks, meaning that there's a conflict between them and us.

There are currently three efforts underway right now to recall members of the los angeles city council and the tone of the l. a. times here is telling quote another day another recall notice in the city of los angeles. You need a grand total of five voters to get together to begin the process of calling for a recall for los angeles official five voters. Literally you can start a recall with the number of people you can fit in your camry and it's not just lay across the state of california. There are more than seventy elected officials who are facing the threat of recall just this year. We welcome you to democracy now. Professor get it. It's great to have you back after a number of years. Can you start off by talking about the significance of this appointment and who alex and who. Alex padilla is someone you've known for many many years. Well obviously the significant is very historic and symbolic that latinos. Now have this position. There's been tremendous amount of latino political mobilization. And you've seen latino mayors like antonio viragos lieutenant governor secretary of state mike. But the you've seen latinos be the head of the legislature speaker or as president pro. Tem of the senate. Republican the only positions that latinos having gained in modern times as the us senate which they've never held in california and governor. There wasn't latino governor back in the eighteen seventies but this is really a reflection of the historic importance of latinos also politically. You know we think about forty percent of the population and they're also a significant number of the electric. It is because a lot tino political mobilization that california is deeply blue without that innovation california would be purple and maybe even read and we're changed the whole dynamics of national politics. I remind people that for many presidential elections. Republicans won california. It wasn't until nine hundred ninety. Two democrats started winning and berry winning because of we all know the. Ross perot factor there. But after that really dependent on the latino vote and latino vote is the backbone of california being democratic which becomes the backbone of the democrats having a chance in the electoral college is so historic to historic significance but also political significance
