How do I market to my personal network?

"Hi Chris. This is Angie Cheung from Los Angeles California I've been listening to the show for about a year. Now it's really helped catalyze the launch of my recent stem coloring book for kids regarding Cell Biology. My question is regarding how to get over feeling someone like a woman or a salesman to your personal network. To be more specific. I. Love My Day job as a by medical engineering professor and I would never give it up having said that I wanted to channel extra entrepreneurial energy. Along the way to completing the coloring book, I knew the best way to start would be to advertise existing network of scientists as other moms. However, I didn't WanNa feel to sales and hence awkward to people that out regularly run into. When the coloring book was right around finished Cova nineteen became a pandemic. And so I launched a coloring book. On Amazon an F. C. thinking, he can be a great homeschooling resource for parents during this time and with all proceeds donated to the CDC both of which were great goose for me to pull the trigger in goal I as the attention was not focused on my own personal gain. I feel like others could struggle with this internal conflict as well and I was wondering if you had any insight and recommendations on how to introduce your side hustle to your current network. Thanks love your show, and hope you're seeing Steve By. When she thank you so much for sharing. Thank you for calling in. Congratulations on launching your project, a stem coloring book for kids about cell. Biology. This is so cool I went to take a look listeners if you wanna see it checkout coloring book, just go search for her shop a little science on Oetzi. So if you're on dot com search for her shop a little science, the title of the coloring book itself is a little cell biology which by the way side note great way to. Set yourself up for a series, right? Because the brand is a little science and then you've got the first coloring book a Little Cell Biology. I'm not a scientist but I would imagine there are some further topics she could explore in future books. Okay. And then one more side note she mentioned when she mentioned that her all proceeds are to the CDC. During this time so actually alluded to that kind of obvious some of our concern about feeling sales like it's easier to promote something that you've made if the proceeds going to charity. But I think it's helpful for this conversation to not assume that you're getting your profits to charity because ultimately it's great that she's doing that but. I want to be able to make a profit. So assuming you have made something that you're selling for a profit. I think it's best for your friends and family to be more of a support network than a lead generation tool like your friends and family are not necessarily going to be your client base. But there is a lot that they can still do to help some of them may choose to buy from you just they want to help. I send my a free copy of my book, of course when it comes out but then she goes and buys more herself, which is amazing. Thank you. Mom I'm that's different than asking them to buy it. I'm not sending mom emails, Sake, will you buy my book? You know but what you want their help with whether it's your mom or somebody else in your support network is in becoming an ambassador if you have a lot of people in your network. Does who actually kind of do meet the target market for this project well, they probably do as well. and. So you're looking for a network effect here. You might even proactively offer to send them a free copy you know either for their kids their parent or for nieces and nephews for somebody else that they know. So often your friends and family will be very active in promoting you in a way that you might not want to do because you're concerned about being sales which I understand. But. If it's your friend, you know just think about it from the other perspective. Imagine that that your friend, your scientists and your friend has has created this coloring book and you look at it and you're like, wow, this is really cool. You know of course I'm going to help I'm post about it. I'm going to tell other people about it and I'm not really selling anything because I'm just talking about my friend. Okay. So again, I, think you're looking for a network effect from your network, not necessarily trying to sell to your network especially for a low priced product like a coloring book I do. The same with my books, like I have a lot of author friends and when they have a book coming out they, they will often send me an advance copy and they're not really asking me to go and buy more copies even though sometimes I do just because I want to support them they're asking for my help you know if it's a good fit to introduce this book to readers, and of course, I do the same thing when I have about coming out. So I think that's what you're looking for in terms of that network of friends and family the network and the fact of becoming an ambassador.

Los Angeles - California health officials release guidance on elementary school waivers for in-person instruction

"California health officials have released guidelines for elementary schools to seek waivers, allowing them to offer classroom instruction in the midst of the Corona virus pandemic. The officials say some public and private schools and 38 counties on the state's Corona virus watch list can seek waivers from local health officials if they have plans for keeping students and staff safe and meet certain criteria. Los Angeles - California's Child Care Workers Consider Unionizing

"New report out today that paints a grim picture of the future of child care in our state. That industry was a tough one even before the Koven 19 pandemic. Now it's been driven to the brink Katie or reports The report from UC Berkley Center for the study of Child Care Employment finds an industry that's already taxed struggling to survive the Koven 19 pandemic. Center director Leah Austin says there are a couple big takeaways. That's what you know is very concerned about their own health. It finds that programs on financially struggling. I think we have had a sense for many months now that the child care system in all of this pandemic is really on the verge of collapse. The survey of nearly 1000 providers shows about 80% are taking care of fewer kids because of health and safety restrictions. This leads to reduced income, which in turn leads to more financial uncertainty. Austin says there was a child care shortage before Cove it and the pandemic is going to make it worse. Bottom line is that there will be less childcare available. And if there's less child here available, then there's opportunity for working parents to be able to utilize child care. And you know that's a dominant meaning without child care. Parents may have to drop out of the workforce. The report finds the industry needs a huge boost in government funding to help support the system. Austin points out providers are overwhelmingly women and in California women of color, a group she says, whose work has been historically undervalued. For the

So. I I would I think that's probably going to happen? Will See. Abou- like you know the Democratic convention. You know and the Republican convention all that kind of stuff. which will happen over the summer? Will probably be virtual obviously but. I don't know I definitely and. "I don't you know, or whatever. And they were like totally you know, I've been I'm like trying to shyly be like do you want to do you wanna play on this ban, though? So it's like trying to seduce Andy with my dance tracks. Delek dance music though. We both figured out that we were both teenage ravers. And that was pretty that was a pretty funny coincidence that I'm pretty closeted about that. But it's true. Yeah. I'm just stealing Chris's band pretty much. I told Chris we're going to be rivals. Those I'm gonna steal your band. It's going to be like Katy Perry and Taylor swift of the queer world. I can't wait for the fallout. I could see it Chris's got some passionate fans, they're gonna be pissed. What happened was the real story? How did I steal Chris's band? I just needed to be documented. So then it can add up on my Wikipedia page. You know, I've been in a band since I was a teenager and things were different than now. You can measure each time. Someone listens to your song. It's just insane. And I think trying to be like confronting my own feelings about what successes more at a place for like, I wanna feel successful. Because I enjoy what I do know. And I making it work somehow versus like, you know, just always know that like I think coming to terms with the fact that I'm will always be reaching a will always be trying to get somewhere. And I think if I if I can accept that those mos- milestones of I think, we think sometimes they're going to feel a certain way, I think for me, it's like an realizing like all it's just been really this process. It's been making something of the process. Of learning something that like the the milestone feels less like fanfare as I thought it was going to be so trying to just be like they minute for the process. I guess I mean, I definitely come from a family of workaholics. So there's that I always wanted to be learning. Like, I don't have enough time to learn everything I wanna learn and I have to prioritize what I can do no time for 'cause I'm constrained by time. But I think it's trying to like how do I be satisfied and being this like I wanna learn that. And I can't or want to get there. And I don't know if I can do that. I feel like I'm I don't know. I wouldn't say I'm satisfied. But I'm always trying to do something. No, no, where I'm trying to get really because I'm always going to be going. So if you won't be broad enough to you. Totally. Tell me..

"See that. Dads. Push. You. Dance. Dance. Oh, MJ video is amazing. Looking folks working out, and I've just I'm so thrilled with how the video came out as just like spandex and sexy squats. I guess is the best way to describe it. My mom described it as like, oh, it's like kaleidoscope, but s-, and I was like, yeah. That's what it is. When I sent the video into the record label. They just emailed me back. But. I guess so there's a lot of butts in that video. That's the third video. We put another video for coming for us that came out a couple of weeks ago, but I will say on the video I roped in internet personality, fitness guru, hyper body, who I really recommend checking out there Instagram and Mick dazzling who's been my Alicia SilverStone of these videos, my creative consultant, I guess you'd call her just real real treasure. I think you're gonna like those videos is just me and Ian merely doing choreographed dance. And everyone looks pretty good. Everyone's pretty good this album. I really probably worked on the most. As I writer writing is something that has before fill in a way that it's come really, I'm not gonna say like easily. But once something's written. I'm like cool. That's cool. And I think this is the first time I had taken all my demos to producer and been Mike. I think these things are cool. And I think they could be cooler. So it was a real. Experience to be open enough to work with someone who has like this person can help make these songs cooler, and which I'm so-, I hug everything so tight that. I make that I'm like, no, I don't change. It was a really good experience for me. And I think out of it becoming a better writer, a love learning new things about music, and this record was a lot of learning for me, which was at times like pretty frustrating to me. Like, how do you do this in like socially trying to write kind of like electron ick? If there's something I wanted to do, and I like, it was a thought in my brain. But I'm like how to get this into reality. How do I even make this idea? Concrete with words, I just it was such a different. Experience and like good, Tari know, so well, whatever rock music, I guess. Pop right now is just such a weird productions Jewish in that. Psycho instrument. Andy was like one of the few musicians that I knew in LA from being on that Chris pyrrhic tour are one had moved down here before me, and I down here visiting her and just messaged Andy on Instagram or something and was like, hey, I'm going to move to Las to wanna get some coffee. Luckily, we were both on the east side and it worked out just kind of asking Andy, I was like can you introduce me to some users..

"Los Angeles, California, eight seventy the answer go. Hi, Mr. Levin. This is Christine from offenders, California. We were part of the operation wetback in nineteen fifty-six. My my father, my mother and my sister. My brother and myself, we were anchor babies we were both born right here in Los Angeles, California, and we were deported for one year to Mexico as punishment. But my father turned himself in instead of letting the the military sweep I'm up. So I think are a punishment of one year was a lot less than what most people got people got two years of punishment to be able to come back. So basically because he turned you all in they sit right? You're outta here for a year. And then you can get line and apply legally. Right. Well, the family was out of the state we were in Mexico in our grandmother's home, but my father was allowed to come back in work because we hate he had already purchased a house here in in torn California. So my father was allowed to come back here and work, and he became they gave him a residency. So that he could work with the federal idea. Number. The family stayed out of the United States. Even though my brother, and I were citizens we were out of the United States for one year. And this was under Eisenhower, correct? Oh, yes. Nineteen fifty-six 'cause I was born in fifty five. And so now we have a president who saying, hey, look, these people having been stepped foot in the United States yet. And he's saying no, you can't do that. And he's being called a racist. And you know, what he is not I love President Trump. Okay. I believe in everything he's doing and he's doing what's right people need to come back legally, my father had to pay a lot of fees, and he did we did our time. Let everybody else do that. And now, you're a successful American story. Christine, correct..

"Right i think the hardest thing is hitting that fork fighting those negative feelings and then flipping it over into like oh like now i'm inspired because now have a direction to become this yeah to become something stronger as supposed to be victim of all the negative thoughts i think of big thing that for me has been hard to get over as i don't have the greatest health it's funny because like i kind of always not always going going on but just in like since marilyn i've been playing together there's been several different things that physically i've had to overcome just even seeing her play like the first ep that we did basically as wasi but we were called we are she is at the time but the first ep that we did then at that time i had just been diagnosed with firearm cancer i had a major operation done on my neck where they like open it all up it took the firearm a bunch of nodes out and then two weeks later i was in the doctor's not to sing for six weeks but i was in the studio to flavor singing and working on that ep and at that time i had to go do radiation and we were like helping a friend like with the studio at the time i was really run down i've dislocated my neon stage before and popped it back in really quick and like had to get it drained and it took like six months to heal my elbow right now is broken like just physical things i feel like at least on my end phil pushing through no matter what like just getting through it still the show must go on like we're still going to play like my elbows broken but i'm still going to get out there and i'm still gonna play the damn show because the show has to go on trying to deal.
