"The angels Tyler skaggs career was cut short The 27 year old standout pitcher for the Los Angeles angels died from an overdose in a Dallas hotel room in 2019 Following an 8 day trial a jury took only 90 minutes to convict former angels communications director Eric of providing skags with the drugs that led to his death Here's Kay's attorney Reagan win This is a tragedy all the way around You know Eric K is getting ready to do minimum 20 years The federal penitentiary and it goes up from there And Tyler skaggs is gone And I mean it's a tragedy There's no winner Joining me is Harry Nelson of Nelson hardiman author of the United States of opioids Harry Kay is not what we think of as a drug dealer No definitely not He was former communications director of the angels A guy who was very connected to multiple players on the team and even when he wasn't in his formal communication director position anymore he was really kind of a Gopher who was helping players out when they had different needs Certainly not a classic What we think of when we think of a drug dealer Did skaggs die not because he was snorting oxycodone but because the oxycodone was fake there were counterfeit oxycodone pills Correct Basically when air K went out and got pills that he thought were actually codon they were in fact counterfeit fentanyl laced pills that were much much more powerful the dosing was much much higher and much more dangerous and then real life And so he unwittingly gave Tyler's gag I felt that they both mistook because they had the imprint of the M 30 and the right color to look like 30 milligram oxycodone And it's fentanyl that's been responsible or linked to the deaths of prince and Tom Petty is it most connected with overdose deaths Since 2014 the vast majority of the deaths I think that the numbers depends on the region of the country but it's probably three quarters if not higher 80% plus of death since 2014 are from these counterfeit pills which we call sentinel It's actually a whole toxic mix of related synthetic compounds Tell us what the trial revealed about the culture of drug use In the Los Angeles angels Clubhouse There were testimony from multiple players living like Matt Harvey for example that they had been using opioid pain pills for years And it sounded like in most cases these were players who were playing through injuries and they were actually helped for whatever the short term need was It also was clear there was a widespread awareness that K was doing this for lots of players And if these players had problems Tyler skaggs Steph brother testified tried to help Tyler get off of the pills gag's mother testified that he had tried to quit several times And so the thing that came across to me out of this trial was that there were no secrets this was not a surprise Jeff K was not some evil menace He was really embedded into the life of the angels team as was the youth and the chronic need for pain management that these pills serve I want to point out that the angels have said they weren't aware of any employees providing opioids to players or that skaggs was using them Now K was also hooked on opioid pain pills and also tried to kick them Yeah the sad irony of the case is that Jeff K was also a victim the only difference being that he didn't pay with his life as Tyler skaggs did Is there any indication that this is still going on in clubhouses Oh I believe this is still a problem happening throughout baseball and other professional sports about ten 15 years ago we saw the DEA do an intensive audit of multiple professional teams baseball teams the football team And really cracking down on the doctors who at the time back then if we go back to the early 2000s were supplying players And so what happened is we essentially took away the legal supply because the doctors were being accused and were afraid of losing their licenses by making pills easily available and instead it was replaced largely with a secretive network and the only difference was that Jeff K had the misfortune to get counterfeit pills and my sense is that on most teams the illegal trafficking that's going on is with pharmaceutical grade oxycodone and other pills But I personally believe and this is just anecdotal from what I've heard from people associated with various teams and from occasional calls that I get as a lawyer is that this is still very much a problem throughout professional sport So Major League Baseball does have a treatment program policy for for opioid use disorder doesn't it It does The problem is that first is a lot of shame attached to admitting that you have a problem publicly that is a danger to guys who are stressed out they in the sense when the financial lottery by making Major League Baseball and don't necessarily want to put it in jeopardy by admitting they have a problem And the other reality is that these players are under enormous physical stress with a 162 game season in baseball with the intensity in all professional sports with the demands on them and I think there's really a gap actually in medical care to acknowledge that we are asking these guys to play and perform for fans for their teams under enormous stress with a different standard of pain medicine that we have to somehow find a way to spread the needle of keeping them physically safe but acknowledging that they are putting their bodies under a stress that most of us couldn't possibly endure for even the shortest period of time And is there any indication that Major League Baseball is paying attention to that problem You know I've had conversations with folks associated with healthcare in baseball their medical directors I think there's awareness that there's a problem but I don't think that they are anywhere near a solution The positive is that this case was a huge wake up the challenge is that we have in some ways an intractable problem of addressing the physical demands on these players I do think that there is progress being made in reducing the shame and having players coming out and talking about the issue they've had does help the culture and the league and make it easier for other people to step forward But I think we have a long way to go Speaking of coming forward four former teammates of skaggs testified basically that they knew skaggs took opioids admitted to taking drugs themselves and that K had been their supplier You mentioned Matt Harvey He was given immunity to testify so that he can't be prosecuted but if he were to be signed by a team let's say he could immediately be suspended for what he admitted on the stand So is there a built in reason for players not to come forward Yeah Matt Harvey the late career player who I think had to have made a decision that testifying in this case could essentially lead to a suspension and certainly we're going to make him less attractive But he's the guy who has had a great career He was on the cover of Sports Illustrated He was the starting pitcher for an All-Star Game I think he made a decision when he testified that he was prepared that this might be the end of his career Obviously I think players who still have more good years ahead of them We're not and in general are not going to be willing to talk openly in the way that he did The defense was that they were fellow addicts and the agreement was that scad would pay for their drugs and K would handle the transactions And the defense also made an argument that ultimately skaggs death you know the responsibility was with the pitcher himself But none of that seemed to work for the jury Look I think unfortunately the easiest way to understand this story even.

"In the national and american leagues is manager and fifty. Six bob shopping Had this quote more people in la today no bill and marilyn monroe. That gives you some idea. As to celebrity. There was a sports columnist named ned. Cronin the la times he wants wrote remember. Nineteen fifty six was an election. Year is an our was running against stevenson. And so crumlin suggested that there'd be a ticket of mantle and bill manno was for president bill for vice president he wrote a vote against bill vote against mantle and bilko is a vote against home mother and bottled beer. Mickey is a sense to get the ballot. A very man and woman who can tell the difference between third base three basit and across a come watts book of course is a cinch to sweep california and since the vice presidential candidacy seems to be a matter of grave concern. Richard nixon was the vice president under president eisenhower. And that's what he's referring to their campaign and a campaign issue stirring dimensions it is comforting to have a nominee who's popular with one and all except possibly the pitcher stout. Steve has threatened with the cafeteria while taking a turn at bat so yes he was extremely popular. Even hollywood stars fans I remember talking with west parker. I was out on the west coast and visiting dodger stadium in west parker one to meet me and members of the bilko family. We were there. For Steve's induction to the shrine of the terminals which is a part of the baseball reliquary. Poor man's cooperstown and so. The family Steve of course long since passed away but This was two thousand fifteen after the book came out and we're in l. a. and west parker comes to the ballpark. He was an outstanding first baseman for the dodgers and he wanted to meet me and he wanted to meet the family. He was a hollywood stars. Fan growing up but it was also a bilko fan because bilko just cut across it matter who you rooted for. You liked steve local. He was a kind of guy you connected with He had these monstrous home runs. He was the hero of a lot of kids whether or not they were angels fans. I got a couple of questions about the composition of the team and bill clinton particular. You look at fifty six fifty seven fifty five fifty seven his three seasons in los angeles a couple of things. Stand out to me. It's a number one and thank god for things like baseball reference dot com with. Don't forget don't forget the hyphen between baseball and reference. The his stats. Just stand out. Just like i mean egregiously so versus the rest of the team. I mean maybe. Jim bolger on on that fifty six team. You know a look pretty sterling as well. But i mean this is a guy who you know lead on in so many different sort of batting categories. Let alone i. I'm assuming he was less a fielder than he was. Sort of a a a a an offensive threat is as a batter. But i'm just my immediate question is with stats like this. Especially his long balls. I mean fifty. Five home runs in a season in fifty six and and almost around the same output in the years prior and following. Was he not getting another look at the national league to go back up for his second cup of coffee or was. I'm just curious. Because i mean maybe i'm looking at this. Do more modern lens right. I'm surprised he stayed for three years. And the pcl given the kind of output he was put now. Here's what happened to him in fifty six. He was having this great year. He was box office okay. He was the box office wherever they play. The angels gave him a great contract and they He signed a waiver to wear. No big league team could draft him. He wanted to stay in the west coast. Why well his salary with angels was around fifteen thousand dollars that was double what the major league minimum was at that time. So bill code been in the major leagues. At that time he would have been making half of that in fact when he returned to the major leagues nineteen fifty eight. He took a pay cut. In addition his endorsements personal appearances was another fifteen to twenty thousand dollars. Bilko was making between thirty and thirty five thousand dollars. That doesn't sound like a lot of money today. but keep in mind. What mickey mantle. His salary was in nineteen fifty. Six mickey mantle. Salary was thirty five thousand dollars. So steve bilko between his endorsements in salary was doing as well as mickey mantle was just on a salary mantle of course was picking up some endorsements on top of that. That'd give you an idea. He signed a two year waivers so he can stay in. La miracles flosse was. Why did he want to go back to the big leagues at the major league minimum and sit on the bench as he was with the cubs or with the other team. If he was gonna go back to the majors he wanted to start. He wanted to play every day where he felt he could do in the majors what he did in the minors. What's interesting now. The reds cincinnati reds drafted him. They didn't keeping they sent him out to the dodgers. The dodgers had gil hodges and had norm locker so they were pretty well taken care of it at first base even though hodges was in the twilight of his career but Bilko they they acquired bilko primarily because there was a referendum about Shebeens ravine the land. There where they were going to build dodger stadium. It was in danger of not passing and the and the dodgers acquired biblical to help them at the gate. And at the ballot box they won the referendum by about twenty six thousand votes buzzy pervasive. The general manager later said they would not have won that. Referendum and the rights to build the ballpark dodger. Stadium more they did. Without steve bilko so gokul basically said that should name a street. There they don't have one but there should name street. They're called local way because he paved the way for dodger stadium. Yeah it's interesting that to a very controversial and still resonates today in terms of of that land and the displacement of the of the families that that grew up there. And all of that right so i but you can imagine how contentious a situation that That story that was and but that you're also now hinting at what was to come right. I mean so. Do you think bilko. And then i want to get to the other members of the team and maybe this applies to this as well players in the two teams in los angeles and perhaps even the seals up and sit in san francisco. Were there was any inclination that this pacific coast league thing was going to be. Potentially you served by a bigfoot team or to kind of invading their territory so to speak and maybe not a bad idea perhaps stick around because perhaps they could hook up with said major league team when one appeared or.

"And finally i finished them after i retired from the corporate world and the along with those two. I've done three other books. So i think that's great. Because you've essentially you kind of started in earnest in in in what you thought was a was a passion or calling realize sort of the realities of life and and having a fledgling journalists in my early years as well and then kind of fleeing to the semi saferworld of of corporate advertising and then then by extension media technology investments in that kind of stuff. But you know this podcast in a in an odd way. Sort of a away for me. Although i'm not retired per se from the day job it's at least it allows me to proverbially. Scratch that each in audio form with with an you know a topic and a zone of interest for for whatever reasons around teams and leagues stuff. Because nobody else is writing about him talking about him. Well there are more options today to do what you're doing when i was younger. You didn't have all these opportunities to branch out now as a college student. I wanted to be both a sportswriter sportscaster. But at that time you didn't have very many is doing both. It's only been more recent years that some of the sports writers got into sportscasting. You went one way or the other at that time I wound up going into sports. Writing because i just liked the printed word better and i felt i had a great talent in that area and i also didn't feel that i had realized all my potential as a writer when i went into the corporate world in fact when i went into the corporate world i was working fall mark. I was bored. So i would go out to royal stadium which was new at that time. i did some work for the royals. I also use that opportunity to do. Allow the interviews for the book because the players billy martin while he was a manager at the time but a lot of the people. I wanted to interview come through kansas city joe garage yola for example of who i interviewed extensively steve vocal so i use that time out at royals stadium together a lot of the material and then when i started to travel a lot more in the corporate world because left hallmark to go to goodyear turn rubber company. I would use my Trips when i was in the area of somebody i wanted to talk to those blair so on one. It was a blessing on the other hand. It really slow up the completion of the books. Yeah but you see kids out there. You're listening right That's the great way to kind of get sort of the side-hustle paid for by the man. If you will without sort of leaking out right. I guess the only other i guess sports related kind of realm of that would be. Maybe the refereeing thing right which tends to be you have to kind of more that has to be more of an officially you know sanctions thing so that you know both corporate environments kind of a you know a can can handle each other with schedules and that kind of stuff. But but i mean you you're describing frankly A way to kind of keep the. I don't know the the passion the side project the whatever you know in the background and you know kind of your work to live so to speak but then also live to work somehow right well you in the corporate world. Of course. I had to keep some of these things under the radar. There were some people. I could be a little bit more open with I remember the vice president of public relations at goodyear who was a big sports fan and he knew i was so working on a book when they hired me and to him that was i think one of the reasons are hired me because he liked the stories that i was telling me about what i was working on and i think he wanted to provide a vehicle for me to finish what i started so it it for some people. It was helpful others. You just didn't want him the whole lot whole lot about what you're doing but growing up in los angeles Back to the beginning Went to games wrigley field and that is where most people with homerun derby the original home. Run derbies where wrigley field. Los angeles louder. Your television movies. Ronald reagan was in the one where he plays. Grover cleveland alexander A that was filmed at wrigley field. So all your movies were filmed wrigley field. That's where i went to games as a kid with my father and my brother. And i really fell in love with a ballpark and i'll end became a cubs fan because the angels at that time were a cubs farm team. Yeah and that was that was going to be sort of the. How did this the idea of the of of doing this book sort of get started. Well you know we had a conversation a number of months ago with the Dan taylor about the hollywood stars and the thing that that kind of struck me in that conversation and maybe this sort of the sort of the on ramp to to this conversation is we'll get to the rivalry and all that stuff in los angeles in the second. But i almost got the feeling doing the research that the angels were the more if you will hollywood of the teams versus say that the interestingly named hollywood stars in terms of how many stars and filmings and those kinds of things when you mentioned homerun derby i get the feeling that wrigley field in. La was more. I guess connote noted or overlapping. We'd be with the entertainment industry. Or do i have that wrong. Or maybe maybe it was more fondly or deeply remember. Perhaps from the start you more field was located in hollywood and and it was also owned by a group of movie stars so it was more hollywood. You might say if more glamorous more the actors and actresses went to games there in hollywood the wrigley field of course and as compared with gilmore field. Was the bigger star as a ballpark. But the fans of the angels were more blue collar types groucho marx however went to games at wrigley field and there were a few others. Believe necking cole. Also went to games at wrigley field. But your basic clientele was quite different. When the stars it was more glamor the hollywood type the entertainers and over at wrigley field. You had people like my father who was a minister. I remember one time going to a game. Actually we're going to game a wrigley field. You'll moorefield and my father. An angels fan and his friend and also minister was a hollywood stars fan and they started needling each other and my dad said to him is gene. How can you be. How can you be a christian pull against the angels. So there was this rivalry. He was kidding of course but There was this rivalry. And i went to games really field if i mean. It was a beautiful ballpark. You're close to the action. You're closer to the action gilmore field. In fact you're right on top of it there. It was a smaller ballpark. Wrigley field was built in nineteen twenty five it was really the original wrigley field because a cubs. The cubs called their park which was built earlier. They call it cubs park until nineteen twenty six when they renamed at wrigley. So you're ever in a trivia contest wanna know the original wrigley field chicago. It was in los angeles. Well don't get me started on the s chicago fed's and the the original season behind the whales on the actual original origination. Right now i come to my. I married into just not not like cub fans but just the the whole all that comes with it. So it's a very. It's now seeped into my blood. Even though i grew up in the new york area. But but he so describe this and we'll we'll get into the fifty six seasons specifically in a minute but the this was this was a real. You know of out and out rivalry between these two teams right in the la area. And i'm guessing that you couldn't you couldn't really kind of be a fan of both you kind of had to really kinda choose one or the other just like any other dual team rivalry in the united states. Red sox yankees. Yeah just think of it. That way i'm back or cats. Who was a pr man for the angels. The stars went on to do some work for the dodgers He compared it with the red sox and the yankees and it was just like that. There were bras There in fact one of the biggest fights was in life magazine which was a big magazine that time commanded six pages of photographs and there was some real slugging going on that in fact they called the police out to the ballpark and the players. Only the players are in the game could be in the dugout. The rest had to stay in the clubhouse. An idea of what that particular fight was like there were fighting all the time now. We're some of them. Staged some of the players are interviews georgia freeze who played both for the stars. Angels lead some of them were staged or at least you know there was something done to try to create the friction that would lead to fight but the fans got into it. Let me tell you that. And the stars angels games. My father was not one to get too worked up about anything but he got worked up over the stars. Angels games as well as my brother and i. Yeah i i'm guessing. It was also aided and abetted by the fact that los angeles wasn't the second largest metropolitan area like it is today but it was certainly on the hugely upward right because of the film industry in the entertainment industry and just growing all kinds of different industries and stuff and media right was pretty pronounced there. And i'm guessing Perhaps unlike any other quote unquote minor league. We'll get into that in a minute. You had you know top tier television stations radio stations covering this thing like it was an american league or national league kind of setup while the two announcers were quite while no mark. Scott was the announcer on homerun. Derby he was the stars play by play announcer Bob kelly who best known as the voice of the la rams and he his voice and faces appears in a lot of movies related the football so kelly was the play by play announcer for the angels. Neither liked each other. Their animosity towards each other was real. That translated into the airways and riled up the fans. Then you had players on the stars side. Like carlos bor near. He was from puerto. Rico had a hot temper bobby. Bragan was a manager. There and the stars had more players kicked out and one of the seasons was nineteen. Fifty three was. Because that's when near and bobby bragan where together for the first time. Probably during the course of the year they probably got kicked out a combined fifty times. It was amazing. They were kicked out all the time. There were fights all the time and mark scott his sign off on his broadcasts and remember sports fans whether you win or lose always be a good sport while that little sign off slogan would round my brother and i thought how could this bunch talk about being a good sport when they're fighting all the time. Yeah that's something. So i guess then growing up in l. a. This was essentially as close as a thing to a top tier. Sports rivalry right. I mean i'm sure you followed baseball in the eastern hinterlands right. But you know this is before the time not until the late fifties right till the the the the to new york teams obviously boldly moved to california and this is the pacific coast league was. I don't even. I wouldn't even call it borderline professional because i think even pants rowland. Who was running the league at the time had had is towards taking this kind of competition and the solid talent that was all up and down the west coast of the pacific coast league and almost maybe even going into the major leagues somehow. Some well most of the players in the league and the pacific coast league had played in the majors. There was some of the younger players bill. Mazeroski hall of famer with the pirates came up through hollywood. He was an eighteen year old playing for the hollywood stars but cat grant who went on to have a great career in the majors. He came through the san diego padres. And you go back. Further joe dimaggio and dom came out of this San francisco the san francisco seals. Ted williams came out of the san diego. Padres as did bobby door both hall of famers so the league produced a lot of great players over the years somehow or another after the world war two is still had a lot of major leaguers in there they were more past their prime and they They preferred playing the west coast and made more money They travelled by plane and the climates. Were much more conducive to a player. Who wanted to play longer. Because you didn't have the humidity and the heat of the east You travelled by plane rather by train so the players like playing on the west coast and then for much of the period after world war leading up to the dodgers and giants coming to la and fifty eight. You had the teams would go into town. The say the san francisco seals would come in l. a. They play hollywood for seven days and then they play. La for seven days. The angels so stay in the same town even though they were traveling for fourteen days. You can get a lot of trouble doing that. Okay so explain to me then. The the state of the league in the nineteen fifties. You'll see we're getting. We're getting into the season specifically. We'll get there but i it feels to me that and i'm look. I'm an armchair historian at best right so you you know this subject far better than i. And hence the sort of curiosity factor of this this little show. But i explained to me in the fifties it feels to me like the pacific coast league was either overtly or covertly or somewhere in between flirting with or pursuing or not afraid to be confused with the quote unquote two major leaks of all of it. I guess fueled perhaps in la in particular with two white-hot rival teams well so you had a combination of things we as fans we had. You might say. And i still do to some degree. Although i'm getting over it. Tim a chip on our shoulders about the eastern sports writers in their arrogance. There were always putting down teams from the west coast including your our football teams. I was a big. Ucla bruins football fan and the rivalry with usc was a great rivalry but nobody talked about it back east. It was all the far west as they went in terms of their interests and their coverage was notre dame in south bend so we were left out of most of the conversations both in football and baseball so to us. The pacific closely was are majorly. We've made no apologies for these players. We saw some great players come through the league and of course a lot of the teams played exhibition. Games out in la. I remember one thousand nine hundred thousand. Five cleveland indians in the new york giants playing a game at wrigley field. They packed wrigley field. Out capacity was only twenty five thousand but it was a replay of the world series a year before the indians and the giants. It was a great and it was just you know we. We saw major league baseball in the spring when the teams would come out there and a lot of them did spring training there and there in california arizona then of course during the regular season we saw the coast. Lagan for to us. It was as good as what we saw. Now the only major league baseball we saw through much of the fifties would be at the end of the season would be the world series and they'd be the dodgers against the yankees every year It was great baseball. We didn't see much of it. What we saw mostly was in the ballpark of the west coast. But that's also it's not like you didn't know any better right. I mean you saw national coverage or read right but but indeed. It was sort of this sort of i guess. East coast or midwest or midwestern provincial kind of approach because it wasn't quote unquote the major leaks. We knew about willie. Mays and stan musial and greatly appreciated. In fact my father. I remember Traveling east one summer and took us to a game at old busch stadium. And we saw stan musial. I remember quite well. Harvey the cat. Mckean was a pitcher for the cardinals. Had been six years old. That was nineteen fifty two later years. Of course Went to wrigley field in chicago and that was great but i felt. Hey i didn't even know the one. La was the originally named l. a. Before chicago but i've felt look i was. I enjoyed more in la than i did in chicago. Because when i went to the games in chicago it wasn't like today that there was a lot of empty seats and there were kids. Running around taking the seats are were up and clapham down making a lot of noise. So i'm more enjoyed the games in l. a. and then chicago. Yeah and and the park was probably a little bit more intimate Even even more so than brickley here in chicago in terms of. It's absolutely yeah. Yeah it was well like. I say if you watch watch the original homerun derby you get a pretty good feel. There were houses behind the left field. Wall and steve bilko in another blair who they had a nineteen fifty five and i write about in the bill quad. Lead a club. Buzz clarkson he'd been a great negro release player and also played in puerto rico a lot of powered. He was close to forty years old when he came to l. a. and nineteen fifty-five he hit forty two home runs the previous year in texas lake buzz targeted this one house over the left field wall and he wants a hit a hole through the door over. There was a pitcher in the paper of kids looking at the whole Those are the kind of things that Really enamored you with the ballpark and its players. You They came king-size heroes to us. Not as well known to the rest of the country court mean willie mays and and those players mickey mantle were known all over the country and our stars often were not. Although i know steve bilko who again i write about in the bill lead a club. He had some fine years with the saint. Louis cardinals His rookie season. He had twenty one home runs in one thousand nine hundred eighty three. So he'd been to the majors and many of the players Closely had been to the majors before they.

How artie wilson broke. Baseball's color barrier. He also co-authored handsome ransom jackson accidental big leaguer of local interest to us the crowley millers were the talk of minor league baseball in the nineteen fifties with crowds totaling nearly ten times crawley's population and earning crowley the nickname of the best little baseball town in the world and gaylon white. All it's peppered with statistics about minor league major league the evangeline league which was really interesting to me. Because i didn't realize our background here. How important minor league baseball was in this part of the world. One of the reasons for writing the book was to keep alive. The legacy of the crowley millers the ballpark that they played in that still here. In fact it's looking better than ever and The storied past of the evangeline which was established in one thousand nine hundred eighty four and lasted until nineteen fifty seven. There was a little time out for world war two right but just a colorful league. In fact it was known as the best literally in baseball and of course that was before there was literally it was classed d and it produced a number of major leaguers a hall of famer named how new hauser who won over two hundred games in the majors and virgil firetrucks coach nicknames. In those days he was a teammate. Of how new housing virgil trucks. One hundred and seventy seven games in the majors and then you go on edlow pat. Who was a yankee great yankee pitcher in the fifties. He came out of the evangeline. So produced a number of major league players prior to the war after the war it didn't produce as many. It was then a class sealy but in the last two years the teams became affiliated with major league teams and so several major league players came out of the league. And i write about one of the book george

"This process goes deep and by deep I mean well into spring training, I doubt seriously if Marcus Semien and is going to be looking for anything less than that. And a 30. Maybe he could afford to take a pillow contract a one year deal and then look to play off that for a bigger deal down the road, But I don't think so. Don't think so. Particularly what? That war number. Then you have all threaten Simmons. Now, Andrelton Simmons is 31 his wars not quite as good. In fact, it's nowhere near what Simeon's is. It's 2.3. But if you go back to 2019 This is a guy who had to 64. 309 on base percentage, and in his career, he's won three gold gloves. Simmons made $15 million last year with the Los Angeles Angels again very rich and maybe something that the Reds may not wanna walk down from a salary standpoint. But still Would seem to be an upgrade over Freddy Galvis. And then you come to Dede Gregorius. Dearie d. D Gregorius was once viewed As one of if not the top prospect in the Reds organization, But that was a long time ago. That was before he was part of the sin. Chew chew trade. That brought a stopgap. Center fielder here to Cincinnati for that one season, they had to give up Gregorius three team trade. Gregorius has crafted a pretty good career. He's had some problems medically sadism surgeries. He's 31 years old, but In 2017 and 2018. If you combine those two years, this is the guy that hit 52 home runs and drove in 173. Now admittedly. Foreign offensively potent machine like the Yankees, but still those air, impressive numbers and in 60 games, and he played every single one of them last year after signing with the Phillies. 24 average 3 39 on base percentage was a one year deal. He may not Want to do is short term contract again because it 31 by the time you're done with that you're 33 year. An infielder. You may not command the kind of money that you could right now. But the money For these guys simply is not out there yet. It will come. It may not come as quickly as they want. It may not come to the degree they want. But one of those three guys At some point The Reds have to pull the trigger on and then think of their infield. Just think of the infield. They'd have it That point. Suarez is back, right? You handing us War is the big fear Last year was he injured his shoulder? He wasn't gonna be able to start the season. Well, the shortened season took care of that. You put any of these guys Simeon, Gregorius and Simmons and obviously I would take Marcus's Simeon. What the anyone of those three and sure you got new stock. Is it second And you have Joey Votto, who is Joey Votto, making a lot of money and is on the back nine in his career. It's still a formidable infield and in some cases very good. They're Overstock it outfield. I'd love to see them do something with Andrew Benn attendee, but we're going to play him. Now if the D H winds up this year if it winds up in the league this year again You hear very reports that it's out. It's not out or it's going to come back if the D H remains after this season if it's part of the new collective bargaining agreement after this season You might be able to craft something where you could get somebody like been attending and find playing time. But right now that our outfield is is jammed, Jesse Waker is one of their best players. You know that you've seen him. As he you know, Like every other player he's had injury problems. The hope is still Nixon's L can develop into a high level Major league baseball player. That's the hope. When I look at this team right now, and I see two question marks in the rotation. I see a huge question. Mark it shortstop. I see a division that's there for the taking. Nobody is going crazy in the National League Central Division signing players, the Pirates might as well be a triple A team with the route they're taking. But you look at you look at the rest of the division and what it's done in this off season. And then look at what this team has. I think there's a very real chance that if they play this thing, right if PJ Antone is what I think he can be And if they can get one of those three guys and shortstop, they got a real chance. Real chance. Be something special. We're gonna talk down the road with Dave Laurel, Our buddy from fangraphs dot com. We'll see if he adheres to my philosophy. Dave's a big numbers guy, obviously or he wouldn't write for Fangraphs. But he also has the ability to To temper that with eyeball test temper that with what? I've seen temper that with What kind of make up it takes to win a division like the National League Central Division. I'm fired up for this baseball season. This year. I maybe it's because, like you, I've been locked in my house. By and large can't go anywhere. He couldn't go to games if you want to games. You gotta sit 3.5 miles away from the people you went to the game was it was just It's just I'm ready. I think you are too. So I wouldn't really be skeptical of what the Reds are doing. I think they're being judicious. And if they can get one of those three guys in short I think we can go past judicious into aggressive Anyway, It's 9 19 glad that you're with us What to get to today We're gonna tee up the NFL conference finals today. I have definite thoughts on both both against the spread and who exactly is going to the Super Bowl? We'll have a couple of expert opinions on that. Also some wagering opinions and coming up. Coming up a 10 06. Today I'll be joined by one of the great rock and rollers in the history of that genre of music. They played Woodstock. They took blues and jazz fusion and crafted it into something that most of us had never heard until they came on the scene. Ripley, Ripley. From 10 years after is going to join me. It's got a brand new book out. We're gonna talk about some of their hit songs and also about Woodstock, which gets romanticized quite a bit, but frankly, it was an absolute disaster. "The Rockies in cactus league action with the Los Angeles. Angels everybody Jack Corrigan along with Jerry, Schimmel producer engineer. Jesse thomas? The big news here in Tempe is about a guy who's not in uniform tonight. But lots of excitement for the angels as Mike trout, apparently has agreed do the biggest sports athlete contract in history. You can feel the buzz around here. Even though he's not the lineup tonight. Jack and debt that is almost mind boggling, isn't it? I think in a number of ways one the timing of it. I think Secondly, the number of years, and certainly the amount of money he is considered as we all know the best player in the game. So I guess the best player in the game should have the highest contract longest gun. And he's got what he's got a couple of those. So yeah, there's a there. Feeling around the angels that it's all positive right now. Best player baseball looks like he's going to remain in that uniform angels uniform for a long time to come one of the things that's interesting in in the process of four Mike trout staying with the angels. Not granted it's a major market, but they are always second to the dodgers from baseball perspective in that L A market, but to have Mike trout, stay put probably for his career in angels uniform, and hopefully the same going to be set for Nolan are not oh, I think that's a real positive for the game. Yeah. I do too jacket. I think most people look at it that way other than the the fans of teams hoping to get a guy like Mike trout like Philadelphia and those kinds of rumors. But yeah, and you look at a guy like Albert Holtz and everybody thought all those years he's going to be a cardinal for life. And it that didn't happen. He came to the angels in and he's had some good years. Now, he's the downside of his career. But I think most people look at it and say gosh, I wish maybe he would have stayed with this team. And they look at Nolan say he has a chance to do that. Now, mike. Trout and some other. So yeah, I liked that trend at Jack. I hope it continues in baseball as for the action on the field tonight. It'll be another start for on Marcus who if you again follow. How things have been playing out. You you expect that Airmont is going to be in the number two slot in the starting rotation behind Cal Freeland, although butt-black is not made anything official yet. Yeah. And you know, if he's if he's not going to be the second he's going to be the opening day starter. But that looks like that's probably Kyle freelance job right now. And there's nothing that Kyle is done or hasn't done the spring to to take that away from him. So yeah, tune again for Marquez he's going to be at the top of the rotation again for the Rockies, an exciting young armed, Jack everywhere, we go people want to say how in the world. Did you make a trade for this guy? He's unbelievable. And I think you'll continue to be that way. I think he's just sort of scratching the surface. Well, and the most interesting thing with Peter Lambert headed down to probably triple eight to begin the. Airman will be the youngest pitcher on the rocky staff. Interesting, isn't it? Yeah. And and he's an emerging star is the youngest pitcher on the staff as well. And that's a young staff that that's a young rotation, certainly. And he's one of the one of the mix, and and we rightfully so this. This guy has come a long way in a very short amount of time. He's an exciting young right handed pitcher first time, we will see the angels in a couple of decades put out Mike socia- as their manager. Brad aas MRs now in charge of the halos and he'll see Iraqis lineup. That has many of the guys expected to be regulars here in twenty nineteen. We'll take a break when we come back. We'll have those lineups for you and bring you a baseball under the lights.

"While the reds lose earlier today. Eleven to two against the Los Angeles. Angels in the reds had just beaten the angels fourteen to two and now while the angels got their revenge and congratulations to the northern Kentucky Norse and the Wright state raiders they share the horizon league regular season championship after victories today. Jalen tape port in a career high thirty points leading northern Kentucky to an eighty six to eighty two victory at Green Bay. And then writes state nailed four free throws the final thirty six seconds is the raiders pulled out a sixty five to sixty two triumph at Milwaukee and K U N W S you both finish thirteen in five atop the horizon league northern Kentucky twenty three and eight overall. Right state nine thousand nine hundred twelve overall this go out to the phones. Steve is in Westwood Steve. What's going on? How you doing chick? Glickman? Great came from the game. What a blast. What was the atmosphere like that place? It was pretty wild. Yeah. They were cranked up and loud. It was nice to see. Great great. Did you hear mic saying when when there's this free throw there's a lot of groans? But whether it's a made free throw. He doesn't often hear that years that goes with the territory man does. But I do wish they'd hit a few more would have given us a little breathing room down the stretch twenty three of thirty six hundred sixty four percent. That's got to improve man. Especially if they wanna make a run. Yes. Mic. Check that. That's what brings me to my next question, swimming, they keep winning two or three more. Well, what are they where are they currently projected to play in the NC double A? You know, I believe it's like a five you five or six. It would be awesome to get you a four. But but I think five is is reasonable, and they'll keep climbing here in the standings as far as the AP and the coaches poll twenty third in the nation right now. So I think they're paid for fifty any idea of where are they giving any locales? No, I really have no idea. I really haven't checked out bracket. Tala holiday today. So, hey, you know, who knows you'd love it if they were closer to home, but they'll they'll take anywhere, man. I just hope they don't send us the Boise. Yes. Going to get sent to far out west, man. Oh, it'd be nice to stay close. That's right. Thank all. Right. Appreciate it. Thank you so much by by now that was Stephen Westwood and now Mike in Fairfield, Mike, how we doing brother Oban. Yeah. I could send you back. I'll tell you keep me in here longer. Oh, man. I thought they were going to blow this the free throw line. I'm telling you. Yeah. Totally Toledo twenty thirty six. You need you need a couple of three more out of thirty six, but you know, that a lot of attempts. But man, they the first day of they missed too many and in down the stretch here like oh my God. 'cause 'cause this this this Martin is so good. And I don't I don't mean to demean is Taranto, these certainly got it. But it will to the point there in the last couple minutes. They couldn't breathe heavy it a foul. Yeah. Come on. Yeah. Was UC in a hurry with a minute and a half to go a couple of quick shots. I don't know. Yeah. Pass break when you don't have to write. I mean pass it around make them play foul. But jeez. Yeah. We sixty eight to sixty four with fifty two seconds to go at a time out. Yeah. And you see was able to run a little clock. They got Keith. William Scott found at thirty four point eight made the first to make it sixty nine sixty four and then Martin bus a three at twenty six. Jaren makes one free throw the second at eighteen point three to make it three point seventy to sixty seven. And then there's Martin with an easy layup at six point eight at seventy to sixty nine. Like what you seek it beat the buzzer. Yeah. I'm telling you what buy Logan Johnson. Holy mackerel. Beautiful huge. They've got a bunch of guys who you talk about the some of the parts, you know, it's better. I mean, it's just you put it all together and some works, right? I was worried when Jennifer. Jettisoned off the court man, half minutes without your without your point guard. Cain broom be able to handle this basketball. Yeah. Not only that. But they miss Jennifer, his his defense at least some of the time you could switch off and put him on Martin. And they miss that. Yeah. But still there is ten straight games would've been five points or less that they have one. And finally long. Yeah. I mean, so they can win the close ones. But boy, I'll tell you there are you gonna hiccup a week coming up. I mean, if the only win one of these I would rather lose at UCF beat Houston. You know, you want to win the home game. Yes. Houston warns. Now, I I don't wanna lose to twice. But I mean, good Lord. Call man. The re- Reebok or pointed great game. Yeah. Workers terrific. Double double double double in there. I even had more points and rebounds. And he did but he was blocked shots. He was terrific. Thirteen points in twelve boards. Blocks to I mean, he was. I think he did. Well, the box score you credit for one. Oh, that's ridiculous. But anyway, wow. Penny. Hardaway come here. I covered the regional ninety two. It was at Kemper arena in Kansas and Lordy to get beat by four times a year. And every time they get beat. It was worse. Yes. Was thirty one. I mean, he didn't want any party. You see I think he saw Terry Nelson in his. Churches, but I'll tell you. Hartaway as a player and now coach at Memphis is warning you see all my goodness. Unbelievable. I'll tell you what they'll give him time. And he's accumulating some talent. Now, I start five seniors man, and they could be dangerous. Oh, yeah. Can really be dangerous conference tournaments in Memphis. Jess. Do you want to play them in a semi? I don't want to get to the bracket opposite away from them would be nice. I figure if you see can win one of these last two. We'll get at least a share of the regular season championship, which should get them at least a two seed for the conference tournament. Yes. Which is what you want. You don't want to get a three you want to get it too. So that you won't have to meet whoever number one, whether it's Houston where you don't want them till harles. Right. So they're they're in. They're in good shape and long as they win one of these was going to be awful hard to win both of them. But it's amazing twenty five and four who bought. Not in my wildest dreams. This year. I thought they'd be maybe twenty one and eight you know, they're twenty five and four unbelievable. And you look at like, you said, I think they're on pace they could get a five or six seed and to me. Yeah. I think the signs are going to get but you don't want to drop any lower. Now, you don't want to get seven seven or eight nine. Yeah. They went to the Sweet Sixteen twelve which nobody thought they would get there. They were a sixty and they never they knocked off Texas and Florida state nobody thought to beat Florida state, but they did. So this this team just. I want to get to at least three hundred wins at UC before this season's over to ninety three. Now, man, right. I'm not sure I think you need a notch your, but whatever it is. You figure at least one more conference regular season game couple three in the conference tournament. And then make a nice run on the NC double A after you mix. Tremendous job. He certainly has Mike. Thanks so much get well soon, brother care, right? Thank you. Reach the bottom of the hour break. Appreciate by calling us. I believe from the hospital man better.
