"Good afternoon I'm Pat Thurston I am so honored to have the film maker of this remarkable film sitting in studio with ratios Lauren green felt is that right green felt greenfield greenfield excuse me Lorne Greene feel she's the filmmaker and the film is called the king maker it's a documentary that centers on Imelda Marcos now for those of you who've been around long enough when you think of an elder Marcos you're probably like me in the first thing that you think of is all those shoes there is so much more to this story and so I I first of all before we even get into the story of an elder Marcos I want to talk just a little bit about you Lauren this is that this is a remarkable film how long have you been a filmmaker and why did you choose Imelda Marcos as your subject well I started making films in two thousand four but I came from still photography which I had been doing since the early ninety is an amount of Marcus actually came out of a long term project I had been working on about wealth and consumerism I had a book that came out last year called generation wealth with an exhibition and a movie and it was really kind of bringing together twenty five years of looking at consumerism and materialism and that a fact of the one percent and our aspiration to the one percent and so about a Marcus had always been a kind of iconic reference in my work because of the shoes I made a movie called the queen of Versailles and in that movie Jackie Siegel we go into her closet in their hundreds and hundreds of pairs of shoes and of course I'm not as the I that that ultimate rough three thousand so I began this story when I read that she was alive and back in the Philippines and had become a Congress woman again and there was an article by journalist and William Mel are about this animal island that she created which is in the film and I thought well that is really the ultimate and most egregious extravagance far beyond the shoes because it involves living things and human rights she de populated an island of two hundred and fifty six families to make room to bring African animals over on a boat she went to Kenya right and she saw these animals and she thought they were really beautiful she wanted only because everything she saw it she thought it was beautiful she wanted to own it and she thought she had every right to so they made a bribe to the president of Kenya they took these beautiful African animals and they brought them to an island this is where they're going to live but there are people living there they force these families out of their homes to make room for her little personal zoo and an a in the film I remember the gall which she said they were talking about where she was going to put them in she said and I thought of this island because I can tell those people what to do what you can just tell those people you know longer live here you have to go and these are very very poor people and it really does a pit of mice that idea of the very very very wealthy and the poor well that's what I was interested and with that the island was like a symbol of the recklessness of wealth and power because on one impulsive decision there were decades of damage because what happened was besides the fact that all of these families had to leave within ten years the Marcoses were themselves forced to leave went into exile after being accused of stealing five to ten billion dollars there was a a peaceful revolution called people power they laughed and the animals were then left to kind of fend for themselves without the enormous resources of course that the Marcus had begun it with said there were that no veterinarians not enough food and and no new blood which cause for generations of inbreeding so by the time I got there to start filming in two thousand fourteen the animals were kind of doomed because of the inbreeding but unbelievably still surviving and in has as number S. as they were in the beginning really interesting okay so and mildew barcos this story and I mean the whole thing is fascinating when Jason my producer when he watched the film and he said you know I started out I was going to think I was feel sorry for this old lady I had a very different this are reaction when I first saw her on screen it just it kind of made me a little sick and every time she acted like she was so sweet she was so good to people and she was so good to these children and she's handing money up to children out the window of her car it just made it made me so angry and I okay so let me ask you this you had amazing access how do you do that well I was introduced to her originally by the the journalist who did this article about the animal island and at the time she was quite open to to me and to him and to foreign press I think she missed the attention of being on the world stage she and Ferdinand Marcos were really like that that the camel it was it was like a Camelot time like Jack and Jackie Kennedy she was beautiful he was brilliant they were this young couple they were extremely helpful to the Americans in terms of having military bases and the Americans gave them a huge amount of aid much of which was the source of the money that they stole and the US was certainly complicit in that and knew that you know money was not going to where they thought it was but it was a price worth paying I thought to have these bases did she know that you were doing a piece that would be critical of her well I actually didn't know that myself in the beginning I I very much come from cinema very attache and rapport Taj and letting the story unfold I was interested in how she survived how she was able to remake herself to the point of after leaving accused of stealing ten billion dollars how she able to get back and get into Congress again and and how were these projects of hers like the animal island also able to survive there was a complicated complexity and a paradox in her character that really drew me to her like your producer said she has aspects of her personality that are very charismatic and very appealing she's she's generous and kind in person and yet we also know she's responsible for these terrible consequences of their regime now during the regime as we find out in the movie besides the theft and corruption they're also terrible human rights abuses but I think what I began the film I didn't know if maybe it would be a redemptive a moment of a narrative of redemption for her that maybe in her old age she would look back with some regret or she would somehow distance herself for maybe some of the decisions that her husband made and that and and the the the policies of the regime what happened was actually the opposite she leaned into what they dead as the best time ever and that they were the best people ever for the Philippines and when I realized that that was what was happening and that she was actively rewriting history a race and all the bad things that happened to take advantage of an electorate that was to you too young to remember at least a big portion of the electorate I realize that I needed a way to let the audience also now that everything wasn't as it seemed with her and bring in other voices and voices of the opposition and voices of people who survive that time and what I witnesses to what actually happened yet and subjected to some of those abuses the the it is an interesting mix because there are people who seem to adore her who loved her and there are also people who are strong critics and then there were people who suffer torture under the Marcos regime of Marcos regime excuse me there was an eight year period where martial law was instituted by Ferdinand Marcos and during that period that was because there was dissent well I he'd be a part of it was suppressing dissent and Bonino Aquino who ended up getting assassinated the lead opposition figure was part of that got off the airplane exact exactly what he was in jail for many years before that during martial law in fact he was the first person arrested martial law but the other the other reason that people suspected it was to assist state and power as a power grab that was a dictatorship that lasted more than twenty years and and so martial law was also a convenient way to stay in power and to deepen that the corruption and theft and to and to stifle any reporting there were and I may get this number wrong fifteen of sixteen newspapers that were shot down under martial law so you no longer had legitimate reporting that was taking place and there was you know people who are taken into custody and they were tortured and you've got the people some of the people who actually had this and do it had actually had to suffer that I mean it's it's just it's such a weird thing to look at with her acting all sweet and kind and I'm this and it was the most beautiful Thai amen we were the most wonderful people and we had the heart we really cared about what was going on and then you you contrast that with the people who suffered these horrific abuses so how was it that the people ended up turning on the market was it a was it a slow process was there something that happened that was just more than the people could handle are you talking about in nineteen eighty six yes yeah it was really the assassination of Benigno Aquino that was a trigger point that happened in nineteen eighty three and it and it began the uprising it took three years until they actually well let's let's make a point it it it appears to me that Aquino was a legitimate opponent but he was arrested on trumped up charges he was he was called a subversive and so that's one of the reasons he was a political prisoner he ended up having health issues he ended up going to the United States and then he came back and supposedly it was okay for him to come back and as he got off the plane he was murdered he didn't I mean he wanted to come back I don't know that it was ever okay to come back I think as about actually warned him not to come back but what his son Ninoy Aquino says is the fact that you want him was proof that she knew I was going to happen which is that he got murdered and in the film you see how the president Marcos was very very L. of that time even unconscious from an operation and so Amalda Marcus was very much in charge along with the main general general there and so many people hold the two of them responsible for this they think they hired the assassin which which she probably did she felt like she could buy anything that when she goes to New York she sees a building this beautiful she buys it you know hundreds of millions of dollars here hundred the million dollars there you know what well it's mine I'm entitled because I'm in power I can have whatever I want to a remarkable self centered amazing individual and then she essentially reared one of her sons to go into politics well it's a place where political dynasty is a huge part of the kind of political landscape and yes she has her eldest son Baghlan her only son was groomed to kind of go into politics and we hear in the film that he wasn't necessarily in love with that path but that was the path he took in the family and what really change the movie because like I said I began thinking it was going to be the story about the animal I land but when bong bong Marcos for sun runs for vice presidency which is a back door into the presidency in the in the country that really change the direction of the film because what I thought was a kind of historic tale of the beginning turned into a present a story about a come back to power and ironically it was the money that they stole from the country which was never completely recuperated that only a fraction of that was recuperated that then allows them to come back into power in a country where money buys influence money buys votes money can buy even the judiciary and yet she claimed poverty when she was in the United States I'm so poor I don't have any money it's interesting because she said that and then not long after that at least in film time she made the claim that she had money in a hundred and seventy different accounts around work which was kind of astonishing she faced charges in the United States as well a lot of them she dead and and about two that is a one of the characters the film he was head of the commission that was charged with going after the L. gotten wealth and then head of the elections and when he saw the film because he's an excel now in the United States he when she said I have my money and a hundred and seventy banks his mouth just dropped open because after years of investigating her he didn't know there were that many banks but I think the ease in which she makes those admission yeah is kind of testament to the fact that there's really never been any accountability yeah it really is I mean there's just so many things that she says that are just off the cuff they're just on the side of that make I mean to me it it gave me shivers but you could see where some people would sort of by pass those things we have to take a break here will be back we're talking about the movie the king maker and the filmmaker herself is here in studio with me she is lord Lauren greenfield it's a remarkable movie it's so good and it's going to be opening day after tomorrow this Friday it'll open at the Embarcadero here in San Francisco Lauren you're going to be there to speak right yes what time of the day seven "That movie is a fascinating look at a great artist and I hope a younger generation of music fans can rediscover her music or discover her music through it and then Lauren greenfield who is documented wealth and consumption as a photographer and a doctor a filmmaker her movie about Imelda Marcos is called the king maker and it's really unbelievable you think that a male demarco's was banished and doesn't really have anything to do with the Philippines but she has a huge role in it she is aligned with its new president slash dictator to latter day this is an amazing documentary where Lorne Greene failed has remarkable access to Imelda Marcos she's filming her as she's talking about what she and her husband did to the country a cautionary tale well let's talk filmmakers in twenty eighteen programmers at Cannes signed a gender parity commitment other festivals are following suit with varying degrees of success how does telluride stack compared to those festivals when it comes to programming movies directed by women I would say not great and I'd say Sundance has done a much better job I think if you look closely at the telluride schedule there's not a lot of movies that are directed by women just a couple I would give them an incomplete mark right now when it comes to a representation of female filmmakers they didn't have a lot last year not a lot this year so I'm hoping they continue to try to improve on that front yeah I'm finally who goes to this festival it's something I've always wondered because it's such a long track is it is it more of a film lovers Film Festival or industry Film Festival bit of both it is a very unusual assortment of people so there are no real benefits to be a member of the press if you go with us we have to buy a credential just like any body else so there's not a lot of media there there are a lot of people who love movies so it's very democratic pretty much everybody has to stand in line to get into a movie and you meet some really interesting people standing in line I have talked to shoe salesman from Kansas city I've talked to farmers from Manitoba and once people come they try to make it a tradition yes studios come yes some big actors come but if you talk about movies while you're in line you're gonna have a very informed conversation these people know what they like and they no movies so.

"But I don't know if there's some Bank of that somewhere local spot, they're still doing some lessons very competitive now, especially on the west side, you gotta like their seven AM on a Saturday can sign up. You gotta be there six fifty nine it's competitive thing. I met poor Matt sad sort because man fund a Lear. I noticed you wanna talk about the future is upon us. I was travelling through the airport week ago, coming back from New York, I pulled my license out a handed to the TSA guy, and he went, like almost time to check when it's time to get this renewed or whatever. And I look. Down. And it's like, oh my birthday two thousand nineteen now at the time as I recall, getting that thing like the last time I went in and took a picture and got the thing renewed. It was like two thousand and four or five or something like a long. I don't know how often does a long time ago, and I remember getting my license going two thousand nineteen. I remember going going to have a driver license. Retinal scans. We'll be in hovercraft like, no one's going to need it. No. It's going to need two thousand nine hundred whimsey car twenty-five love line. Yeah. When it's when it's two thousand and two or three or whatever it was. You see two thousand nineteen. Lorne Greene's going to be the captain and we're gonna be flying. We battle star galactica. And now here never still SOX. Everything's the same. But I said to Matt, unfortunately, I said, oh, man, I think gotta go in and get this thing renewed. So, you know, but the good news is it's two thousand and nineteen. So just hop on your phone, or your computer and just make local find the local Pasadena, Glendale one and just use that computer and get me signed up, and we'll get that little twenty minute window, and I'll just pop in when it's convenient for me and get my license renewed workout not. Well, he's been on hold for two hours, by the way down. Well, it's a call in because every time he's tried to make appointment online, nothing's of there's nothing justed this. So I just did this for my birthday a few weeks ago, and it is a nightmare because you it doesn't give you an option like here, the dates that are available. They don't do that. They just make you guess, and. Then put in all your information. The next page says, sorry, nothing available. Try again. Sorry, nothing they will. So that's when I walked in, I was almost late to the show that day because I was there for three hours and forty two minutes. Right. Because in two thousand nine teen they can't design a website that works can be done on Craig's. Those can figure it out. But, you know why he wants to make money you guys. Don't give a fuck if everyone blows away and never come through the doors. That would be good for you guys. Ennerdale Matt is on his last nerve because you have to go to the Glendale one sign up, do everything. And then you hit the button, and it says nothing available and they don't give any possible day. It's just nothing. So then you go to the Pasadena one, you put an all re long, all the information hit that it's nothing. The Novell dates that whole online process except for. The no elible dates they don't give you action after putting in all the mation I don't know. Three pairs only. Yeah. And it's so smug couldn't love it. They go second era. But so what if white go ahead, six months like who cares just go December fourteenth when you can go or whatever give us an option forty twenty two for me? We'll be on Mars by them burn that thing. So obviously, Matt after spending the whole day, online, and listen, the whole point of Online's, easy and convenient, and don't have to leave your house, whatever it is. But no can-do. So that's not gonna work and now he's decided to call, and I hope you're sitting down. He's been on hold for two hours. They just keep clicking around no one's ever gonna pick up the phone. It'll never it'll never work. And then the choices to go in and just stand there bakery. Tickets are you gonna make can be a proxy is just gonna have to go in and then ten minutes before you actually get to the window. You'll swap out. I don't know how it I don't know how to do for the rich ladies on Friday. All I all I know is mission. Not accomplish. Once again. Obviously, the second there's another DMV in town..

Did it's an equal opportunity in Africa. Yes, it is. So why why with the gay stuff? He should check that out. Clearly, they were. Bigoted. Why don't you call something grids start with gay? It's just everyone gets the same has the same. Another one of the many things. I it's it's sort of the third hand smoke of science, which is look I think it's okay to say that you can get aids in a heterosexual relationship, and you should put a condom on. But there's also problem when you take everything and just turn it into everything. Right. When you take it to an extreme when you're taking out of out of the sort of observation reality and make it something else. Well, if you turn secondhand smoke in a firsthand killer, but nobody dies secondhand smoke. In a way, I'm going to not listen to you. When you talk about what else is dangerous, which is dangerous because the second thing you're talking about could be dangerous, and this is kind of the prom. Like, I know you want everyone to wear a condom good. But you can't say. Heterosexual aids in gates is statistically say otherwise throughly not that you're getting in some weird weird territory now where you're basically going I'm gonna lie to you to get you to do. What's right? Which is fine with your kids when you want to beat their vegetables in their eight, but when you're dealing with the population, it's it's a slippery slope particularly lessons because then it becomes Reefer madness. When you overstate something to adolescence than they don't trust you much else. All right. Do we have Ringo by Lorne Greene? For the west outlaws, the gunslingers the big kids in worse, where did you say? That shot Bill hickok in the back. There's always one like that. And every time of history.
