I think there's a pet saying there should be kind of like the political saying but maybe with pets it's as california goes so goes the nation. You're going to be hearing a lot more about this california assembly bill. Ab forty five. Because it's looking to take a stand against puppy mills and you're thinking. Oh gosh everybody's doing this Well if this is passed in california is gonna put into effect a statewide ban on the sale of puppy mill pets in pet stores allowing only adoptable pets from legitimate shelters in nonprofit rescue groups and this will be the first one that it happens. State wide The passage of ab eighty five would make it the very first time that an entire state has enacted a law like this and it's expected to in fact pass pretty easily Now the bill will head back to the assembly for what they call a procedural vote. Animal advocates say bypassing. This bill california's gonna cut off the supply to inhumanely bread puppies and prevent consumers from unknowingly possibly supporting puppymills and many state. Lawmakers say they see cutting off the puppy mill supply chain as a very important first step to putting unethical pet breeders out of business in the state for good. This is a statewide that would be the first statewide one. But i think it's important to point out that both new york and california many of the city's the majors already have this ban in place right. I think there's what thirty-five towns in california that it's in place already but that's not enough leeann. I think california does lead the nation when it comes to the ways of pets. What's up german shepherd that i kind of have adopted basically you as a rescue dogs. We were patrolling together containing him to be police. Canine okay we do security and he just leaves hair all over the place in the car. So he's a hairiest dog i've ever had. I've had a few. And i mean like he gets in the car and he shakes. You'd like to take it off while i'm thinking that that's kinda the second question is is that shaking a tick thing or or is it like it's a normal routine for him to kinda shed hair to help follow usually something like this will start with nutrition so i don't know what you're feeling what you're feeding him. The other thing is is. How frequently do you have him groomed. I've never had ruled okay. You definitely want probably you wanna try that what you want to tell you. Professional groomer is. My dog has shedding like mad. I need to do a deep d- shedding now. This is also something that you can do at home. Go to your local and most of what most of the pet department stores Sell what they call carting c. a. r. d. i n. g. tools. And what it is. It's a deep shedding shedding comb and it works wonders. It's the same thing your professional groomers going to do. Probably for about an hour if they do the right job but if you do it at home if you just did it fifteen minutes a night to begin to begin with and what it's going to do it's going to pull out all of that loose coat. Mind i d. I n g correct. It's a carton comb. It's a deep shedding comb. Because some of the people might not understand the terminology carting but if you ask for a deep shedding comb they say oh them gecko because he went to england right correct absolutely absolutely even some of your local Big department chains on. We'll have them like target and those type of stores also will have them so you don't have a pet place some nearby. I would go to one of your major department stores as well because usually they carry them. Okay if you do that fifteen minutes a night. That's gonna make a huge difference but here's the other thing and this. This might be a tool full. Fold problem for you when dogs get excited when they get nervous when they get happy when their temperament just changes it's normal that going through shed excessively during that period of time it. Just oh just just comes out. It's very normal now. The work that you're doing your teaching him you know i. I don't know it'd be too big to be a guard dog or whatever the excitement level that is going to go up when he's training so that's why definitely can understand why it's happening your car because tap probably happening after you're going through the training or even before because you know pets going going to the car then get excited. They're gonna shed a little bit more. Get definitely definitely can reduce it by using that card incumbent. Remember one thing. it's the natural process. The dog is going to shed You can control it a little bit. But you're never gonna stop it no matter what especially with the breed of dog that you have. It's just it's it's it's it's going to happen but i think if you went out and had them professionally groomed in followed up with your deep shedding carting type comb. I think you're going to be a lot happier..

I remember this. Laurie reported on this. A couple of weeks ago they make a moscato in a pino meow. If i these are for your cat. And i believe they're infused with catnip catnip giveaways coming up in just a couple of minutes right here on animal radio. Have you ever heard of that dr. This'll be a i. i'm just wondering if he's cats are gonna start ordering things off of tv words. What are you working on over there in the newsroom lori. For this hour just reading some research. There is a country where the people live longer than we do here in the united states and now they're animals live longer too will have to find out what the secret is. I'll tell you must be greece. Don't belong in in greece on those mediterranean islands. I thought you meant in greece as in french fries. Either half okay. That's on the way. Let's go to your calls. I for dr. Debbie and joey villani. Well hello there. Kathy harry doing. How are you good. Are you on a speakerphone on. I'm wearing my headset okay. Are you in the bathroom. Exactly a small room down. Okay now you sound great. So where are you calling from today. I'm calling from san luis obispo california down the street from us. So what's going on. Where are you actually in. Moral are in moral bay okay. Well what's happening is My mom who's quite elderly adopted. And i helped her find And you can't account for her to have a companion and the cat is eight years old and her. Her elderly lady passed away and in the last couple of years this up two years ago and since then she just kinda bounced around and well she got abandoned at first she just got dumped outside by the family and then she fortunately got taken in by the cow polly kept program. And she's just she's been through a couple of homes just really through no fault her own but Her name is squeakers or that. I think it was a nickname but My my mom's really wanted to name her something nicer and i was just wondering Her at eight years old is it Is it a bad thing to rename a cat. Especially this sport. Kitty who's had so many changes. Yeah well i guess the first thing we have to realize is when we name hat and we call them. How often do they actually come to us. I so so this is maybe a little bit different than a dog in that in the response time in the turnaround that we're going to expect with calling a cat is going to be in maybe a little lower bar than we would have for a dog so but that being said i can understand that if your mom was interested in changing her name but you know. I just can't say that it's gonna be an easy thing to get the expectation that the keys going to respond and come to the name. I don't want to use the kitty or rape her anymore unsure of her situation. I don't think it would confuse her unless expectations made her upset. So if we call a cat and they don't come and we get angry or something about how. We responded them stressful than it would be stressful for her. But she's not gonna care if you call her. Buffy she doesn't come it's not going to bother her straight your mother though and that might be the thing that you know. Let's i'm may just advice to not change the rules or the name so much because it really might put your mom in more of a situation where she becomes frustrated the keys to her name responding to her name in whatever way now it can be done and if you have the means to assist your mom with this is something you can certainly do Using food as the reward to retrain her But my like. I said my expectations would be a little bit lower and i. I just don't know that. I would rather see her. Spend bonding time with her. And other ways than trying to change her name. And this is my two cents. There unlike my mom's quite my lawn ninety two and she. She kind of forgets what she wanted to collar. Anyway she had a hard time squeakers. Yeah but you know. A lot of people i mean. How many of us call a cat kitty. In do they come to us. Maybe maybe it's more of our vocal intonation shaking something that's exciting to them so that might be the things that you could look at doing. You know if your mom is struggling with that name or chooses a different when it comes more naturally for her Apparently kidding wicker's tweaker slash daisy Love to be rushed. So i justice to my lawn that maybe she you know crush her or just have some kind of enjoyable time. Sounds like she'll be a great companion for your mom and you know that is the power of human animal bond. It keeps us healthier. Keeps us going and really gives us some some sense of purpose in our lives. So thank you so much for your call. Kathy we appreciate your call in and bringing up that question. A good question of luck. We've never heard that question so that was the first time that we've heard that question here. And there's only one thing that my cat comes to and that's the key in opening you can call him anything. Hi who's this. This is richard. Hey richard how're you doing today. A great i wanted to tell you how to get rid of flea how to get rid of fleet. We've been having a lot of fleet calls.

"Lorie brooks and now from the red barn studios here. Your hosts how abrahams and judy francis as we begin october. 'wow i don't know. Is it just me getting older. It just seems like we just ended the pumpkin patch a few months ago. I can't believe it's been a year already time. Go right well. Robert similar today. He's gonna talk about five. October pet holidays five holidays. That are pet holidays in october. I can't imagine because i guess. Halloween you can dress up the dogs. Some of them like that lady bug likes that you get lady bug all gussied up every year. Don't ya. how my cat likes to. Of course then. It freaks out some animals to in on this show. It looks like you've booked somebody who makes a wine for cats and are just just catches. This is for cats. Yes sort of a cat. Centric show today. We have you know we. We do a lot of dogs. So i thought it was only fair that we bring in some cat stuff today. I believe lori reported about this a couple of weeks ago. The makers of the winds most scotto and pino meow so. I guess we're going to have them on today excited. Okay what are you working on over there if your dog has ever got sprayed by a skunk while you're going to want to hear what i have to say i bet you it has something to do with tomato juice because i hear that's what you use when when you yeah i had. Yeah well we'll see if that's true or not on the way also What are you working on over there in the newsroom. Laurie well. I want you guys to stick around. Because i'm going to ask you to think about something okay. A new study. That was just done on dog and cat dementia and apparently it is on the rise. Big time so. I wanna know what everybody thinks is the cause of this increase in dog and cat dementia. Okay think about that you to look down at your radio talking to you. What do you think causes cat. Dementia will god demand dog dementia. We'll find out with. Lorie brooks i have dimension. I'm sorry well yeah. Let's go to the phones. Well hello anthony. How you doing are you doing. So what's going on. I have the whole team here for you. Well with coronado. It seems to be a fleet of and if i said it right going around i mean it's really really bad and so my question is When i heard the gentlemen talking about that you can use dawn to get rid of the fleas to a certain degree. My question is is. Can you use don on your animal like everything i mean. I'm not saying like every day but with my mom. I have a chihuahua. And i have a pomeranian. Pomeranian hasn't helped the issues. But i'm trying to get through that and give them the pill. Please come back again. That is my question about using don girls. Yes so don. The reason don works to help kill fleas. it's nothing magical about that ingredient. So oh my god. I'm saying there's nothing magical about it. It's a shampoo detergent so we're basically drowning the fleas. So if i pick out a couple of other nontoxic shampoos they're going to have the same effect. What don and other detergents do is basically just drown these fleas. So they're only killing the fleas. That are on the pet at that moment. And they don't have any residual activity after you're done with the bath so so the question is how often can you use it. Well it's a degreaser so excessive use or to frequent can really cause dryness of the skin and dullness of the hair coat so Joey might be able to tell you more about what his recommendation on frequency is. But i really would say sparingly. It's not something that i would do. Daily that is too often to be bathing. Pat fleet combing. You certainly can do every day. But there's no reason you would be your pat every day so you're gonna wanna use other types of flea control in conjunction with that and what's the what's the oral products using like a quick kill like a cap star or something like that well with what my wife is using right now and this is another person out of the ashes called natural care. Leave it takes. Ray and caesar's that on the dog every day so my question is will turn out to be like a respiratory problem us. Because you know you know but doesn't mention if you can use it every day. She has it to try to make animal comfortable. Because i said. I haven't pomerania four-year-old chihuahua and these links about me. I wouldn't wanna playboy. Oliver used to play. He doesn't more you know it's a dollar so just concerned about her using that spray on every day at least try to sleep at right. Yeah and i probably would not recommend using that every day If it's what. I think it has a lot of the natural sprays in place of using an epa approved an insecticide pesticide. They're actually using different types of essential oils and essential oils their natural ingredients from plant extracts. But they're basically are chemical still hydrocarbons and Cavs particularly can be very sensitive to essential oils in lesser deluded to an appropriate amount. So dogs have been also known to have toxicities from essential oils. So the problem. Is you know this is the kind of in that gray zone where it's not well regulated. So how much is too much. I can't tell you. But i can't tell you using it daily that to me sounds excessive and i would be more judicious about using that less frequently on the paths now in the environment might be totally different thing but directly on their coat would have me concerned at that frequency some of the essential oils. Yeah you mentioned. The respiratory component there can be caused respiratory sensitivities sometimes actually can have allergies to the actual oils kind of like the fragrance can actually cause them to be itchy scratchy as well and then i in rare cases when an animal is he can get into larger amounts of undiluted essential oils. I've seen liver disease. I'm so it can cause some problems so we could. I would say a little. Bit is good but i would say. We need to find other avenues to try to help them. If they're that uncomfortable with the itching of the fleas. Then you're veterinarian. Because there are some other products that can use to help control the itch related to flea allergy dermatitis. If it's if that's all that they got going on and that might be something like a pill that we can use for short term while you kind of boost up your efforts on the flea control or something more long-term if you're in a real hotbed of fleas and we're expecting a long haul for you this year. Got to remember your house to make sure you're taking care of your house. How do those fleas last or live with just in the carpet. They can live for very long long periods of time because they actually have a pupil stage which can kind of just sit there for quite some time most commonly the egg. When it's laid it takes about three weeks to develop into a flea but yeah they can hang out in. Just wait for the right environment. So i know isn't that encouraging is it anthony. Not at all. yeah. I made the mistake of by about Get him a lion cut because he always felt good by the summertime. You know coat you know the cut down but now instead of where his hair grow back anymore. I mean he's he's almost like google it. Of course i would coats. I really feel bad about that. But every time with the fleas. Bother her when the constantly bite. I see red spots low blood spots and you go there. I really freely pad if i decide. I just wondered.

"Director Lorie Brooks, who works tirelessly. So what are you working on this hour? Well, there is a cat that has been adopted that they are calling this cat hero. He's a very special cat. He's got four of something. He's only supposed to have two of four uh because of this cat's uniqueness. He brought so many people into the shelter. All of these other animals found homes. Oh, that's cool. Okay, That's on the way with Ms Lorie Brooks. First we're going to go to the phones for your calls from the free animal radio app for iPhone and Android, a great app to have by the way, because if there's any recalls, or news that affects your animals you'll know immediately. Don't forget just a few minutes. Francesco Martinelli, Martina Marchi. Him? Yeah, we'll be on the author of the Sally Forth cartoon, also the author of the book I could pee on this, too. And this is the second time here so I got to get a second time. He's been on three or four times. Yeah, I did not know that. Yeah, let's go to Jeff. Hey, Jeff, How are you doing? Not too bad. Not too bad. Pretty good. Where you calling from today? Right now? I'm in Brooksville, Florida. Florida. Okay, what's going on? I have the entire dream team here for you. Well, I have a domestic short hair. She's about £2021 Holy cow. She's always been a healthy cat and Hello, Mother. Her mother, My wife. She, uh, has the open buffet, which you can open for the open football. She just forced the bag of loot in and the cat eats insatiably. Stop. I mean, we come home and she hops down off the table and went to the football. We come out of the back of the head out of the back of the house, and he hops down off the table onto the football and she stays indoors or does she go outside? No. She's an indoor cat. So and then. So what's prompting you to call Because you said she's always been big? Is there some change in her health or something that has you concerned? Curious is the insatiable appetite or is it just that the foods there and I'm going to eat it? So that the truth is that for dogs and cats, I mean, just like people. Everybody has a kind of a different hunger set point. When we feel like we're hungry. Some of that set up on the type of food we eat some of its genetic. Some of it's based on your activity level. Um, so for a kitty, that is, I'm going to presume that at 22 £21 week for her is excessive that she's overweight. If I had a picture of her and I could see her, you know, for cats that are you generally that big Unless there are mean coon. They're generally kind of potato shaped and they got a little ahead. So if that's kind of what her physique looks like, then she's going to fit into the obese category and The sad truth is about 35% of US. Cats are actually obese, overweight babies, So it is a huge amount in some of this is we're learning. Is there some strategies and changes that we can actually adapt to different things to help? And I think it's really important to recognize first that cats in the wild whatever kind of candidate is a tiger Domestic cat that's outside. Um they are actually hunters, so they basically are going to go out chase their prey, eat it and consume it. That prey is actually very high in protein and fat. But it isn't so high in carbohydrate and then and in fact, if you look at what you know, a mouse is made up of, um, I was just like, uh, only maybe one or 2% carbohydrate. And the reason this is interesting is when we look at dry food kibble that you pour in the bowl that is generally around 40% carbohydrate. So the difference is, if we know cats are meant to be carnivores, but we pour this kibble in the ball that is essentially Carbohydrate is energy. And if she's putting on weight, she doesn't need that love. Energy. But the unfortunate thing, so the unfortunate thing is a lot of these high carbohydrate diets. Actually, they actually want to keep eating it. So we know that if we switch cats that are having this type of problem to a higher protein and limited carbohydrate diet actually kind of resets their hunger level because protein and fat have the benefit of Um, affecting the speed at which the stomach empty, So it makes them feel fuller longer than if they get a lot of carbohydrates. Kind of like if I sit down with the baggage ships, you know, I feel satisfied. I love to eat them. I'm going to keep eating them. But you know, next I'm gonna say Okay. Where's my dessert? Now? I want more. Whereas if you eat a good protein meal, you feel a bit more satisfied for some time. So, um, for cats. We just have to think little bit differently. So what this means is that if we're thinking about what's the best food for some cats, um it may be best to go to a camp food. Because canned foods are actually much lower in the carbohydrates. There's a lot more moisture in there, which is good for their kidneys as well. So that would be one strategy that we can look at doing. Now and now That's that's That sounds good, but we've tried every capturing. That's come out just about she won't touch any of them. But she likes She likes chicken. I mean, we did my She cooked it in the microwave because she doesn't want to add anything to it. Um and gives it straight up dessert. Chicken chops. It all up makes it almost GE and You know, is it? I guess, but she She's very finicky. If she don't like it, she'll scratch the blue ball all day. Okay. All right. We have to dispel something right here. Fat cats are not finicky. They are masters at manipulating. They are not finicky. I've She just knows how to ring your bell, man. That's all this is so I ring her bell on the one that wants to put the lid on the open, but very at least, you know, eight hours. Yeah. Okay. So I understand what you're saying is that if I do something like that, I need to make sure that The protein and the fat content is going to have to look at the food now. Yeah, if she isn't she's in the category of an obese cat. This is really something that I would suggest some veterinary direction for a couple reasons. One is that to help you pick the right food, and there are some great different strategies that we can go with diet, whether you do a dry food or canned food because there are some other even dry foods. That are high in protein, low in carbohydrates. And in fact, we use them all the time with diabetic cats, and they're very successful, sometimes putting diabetic cats in remission. So that's one thing. There's also really wonderful weight loss food that I used from hills called metabolic diet, and I really love it. "Don't you know it's animal radio. This is where we celebrate the connection with your pets and we welcome to the airwaves. Marissa hooper. hi marissa. How are you doing great. How are you very good. How old are you twenty one. I didn't get slapped that time. I asked the question around here like usually get slapped are. You're you're in school now aren't you. Yes i am. Are you in college. Yes go to houston state in huntsville texas. And what are you studying to be like to be an orthodontist. that's that's a a worthwhile job. It pays well. I hear it takes. Please don't me sir. that's my dad summers. You get something kinda neat. It's gone viral on the internet. I'm gonna actually let you tell listeners. What you did well One day my sister. And i were sitting on the couch at home and looking around at all the pictures and we wondered if our parents looked at all the pictures and and all the memoirs when we were gone away at school and and We started to wonder you know how closely they actually paid. Attention so I actually took it a step further and started recreating some of the family. Pictures by dressing up my dog to look just like the family and the picture my mom would notice. You made the dog and this is a two pound chihuahua is it a trawler. Yes yes you dressed up the dog to look exactly or very similar to the pictures correct. So there was for instance. There's a picture. And i think view graduating and and you're in your gown and you've actually taken the gown and put it on the chihuahua with with the What do they call that little hat. They're the It's a graduation. Cap made out of some card stock paper and her role is a hand towel from the kitchen. I know this is radio and hold up the picture to the microphone. So people can see this but you look fairly identical except for the faces. One is obviously a chihuahua. And so you put that back on the fridge or wherever it was right is what is it a picture frame or so you just want them out. And then there's another picture. I believe of you as a as a little girl. My sisters kindergarten graduation picture dressed up the chihuahua with Dark black hair. Just like your sister right. That's a yes. There is a pipe cleaner and some A little dress. She had in in some cost material for a little caller once again strikingly similar imposes. I mean you didn't really good work on the costumes. I gotta say that right now and another one Probably it looks like maybe your mother from my my grandmother grandmother old picture very old picture black and white and you actually created another black and white picture. So you've taken all these pictures. You made them similar. You put them in the place of where the normal pictures were did. Your parents did she notice. Well the first time i did my grandma and my sister's picture and put those up and actually went back to school the next week and i'd forgotten about it And so you know. I told my sister about it and it was just sort of like I can't wait you know. Mom's gonna see it any day now and and my mom's a real stickler for keeping the house clean so we know that she picked up the picture frames and she moved them and she handled them and that crack himself and i think it was two weeks before we heard from her and she put us in a group text with our dad and said i don't know which one of you is switching out my family pictures but out you know i have company over and i'm grabbing these pictures off the shelf and kind of trying to hide them from everyone. 'cause i don't want them to think i did it so it took a couple of weeks it did and then I waited and This past about a month or two ago. I switched out the graduation picture and that one only took her about two days. So i'm convinced that i have her toes looking all the pictures now when i leave So she she's figured out. That one was me but she thought that the actual photo of the dog looked better than your graduation picture. Well then that was the that was the texas. She texted me and said quick switching out my pictures have to explain the company. I've got five by sevens. The dog wearing and i was like. Oh my gosh. I know you thought it was funny. And she text me back into well. Her graduation picture came out better than yours. Your style marissa. I really like that is just a kid. You want to be an orthodontist. I think there's another calling for you the these again. This very hard to express on the radio so judy. Can you post these pictures. Animal radio dot net. Okay crack me up. Thank you take care. Now i gotta tell you. These pictures look strikingly great. I mean she took some great time and effort to make these pictures. Look like the originals. They make me say that. Actually i get ten cents. Every time i say that. Have a dollar now. We're going to line to well. Hi how are you doing. I'm good how are you very good. What's going on in your world. Oh well i've just got a big cat that seems to have dandruff. not all the time. But from time to time it seems to be clicked a little bit by the top of her tail You know where it comes from her body in that area She's a siamese cat and she weighs almost eighteen pounds. Holy moly a couple of years. But she's not fat she's just A big cat. Gator shadows wow exercise and everything. But she's just a big test. I took her in and When i first got her new said she's not a fat cat. she's just a big cat. This is the way some of them are. Sometimes you know a little When i first got her they some something on her. I can't even remember what it was and that it did work. It was very greasy and it just were self off and it didn't really work. I was wondering if there's something. I can use on her colt that might help it. Okay perhaps now. There's a couple of things. I wanna ask you. Does she seems itchy scratchy. She have hair loss in any of the areas on her body. She doesn't scott says she doesn't have any hair loss and i've kind of pulled up her and check check. She doesn't have any dry. Spots are dry under there. It's weird to sing. It's kinda like a flaky When i brush her. And i'd take the air off the brush. You can see a little spot of hair She's an indoor cat. And i'm wondering if maybe it's just a dry skin that she's got well. The first thing is when you tell me that you have a siamese that's eighteen pounds. My bs radar is going on and she's in good weight because there are not many. Siamese which are fine boned lean cast is generally. What the breeds hype is so i would just partial. I think maybe half. Siamese yeah well we do see especially in the hindquarter area right over the rump. We do see a problem where overweight cats will commonly get dry skin in that area. And they'll have a lot of flaky nece in part of it is because they're a little bit to round. I'm kind of like a weeble. They can't turn around. And groom that spot very well so that can definitely play one factor in things but when we look at what are all the causes of what makes a cat. We have flaky skin. Well we look at things like parasites so perhaps your veterinarian did treat with a topical parasite product. That'd be one of the simplest things that i would always start with us to make sure we're doing really good flea control because there's also other types of parasites you can't see like might that can cause Flaky nece as well as itching and so forth. So making sure that you've had your cat she's an indoor cat all the time understand. Yeah but they're still. I feel give her the three things Later that he's not An aggressive cat in any way but.

"Director. Lorie brooks and now from the red barn studios. Here are your host pal abrahams and judy francis. Just going to point out the daca. Debbie looks very suntanned this little birds. Why's that you've been hanging out in the sun normally a sun worshiper anymore. But i did make a special occasion. We did a road trip for my dogs. 'cause that's what and i do all about me. You're happy so we did a dog beach excursion. Only we went to a couple different beaches. We hit the del mar a dog beach and we went to coronado islands had a phenomenal time. It was by d. to my dogs from really more this like tired this their first trip to the beach. This was their first trip. We are former dogs are labradors. We had done a dog beach visit and they were just they loved it and so we wanted these experiences walk because they like to dig out at lake mead and we just thought that they'd really dig it and they did. It was fun. We had a good time and just fun meeting people who love dogs and all the dogs were friendly and well behaved. I was so impressed but it was really good and you know. There's you know for those that live in areas with beaches. There are certainly concerns that we have for their safety and that was first and foremost on my mind just because the salt water. And my gosh you know they're gonna get salt toxicity. What's that salt lake city is. We're A jog can ingest either too much salts or not enough water and so a job that theoretically would either eat a ton of salt or drink. A ton of saltwater could have electrolyte imbalance that can actually be quite serious and anyone. Who's had dogs you know in the the ocean if they drink too much water you know. You may see some vomiting diarrhea which will be the milder signs of drinking water but the more serious signs. When we have these electrolyte imbalances can cause your logic problems. weakness can require in those situations. It requires hospitalization. It can be fatal so if we have assault tucks now the other way animals salt lake city is that they have no access to water like animals. That are outside. Maybe confined outside in the snow without access to water or water freezes. They can actually get a salt texas city just from a different kind of mechanism in their body. But is it okay for us to let our dog swim in the ocean. Sure yeah it's just watching how much your dog drinks in the ocean. You want to make sure you give them freshwater that. That's not their source of drinking water and then also tempering their exercise so dogs. That are really exuberant. Running and playing really hard and vigorously and getting themselves all worked up. We want them to have a little breaks in times out. Make sure that they're getting adequate water during that time so that they're not setting themselves out for a problem at. This might be a joey question but do you. I guess wash dogs or rinse them off after. They're in saltwater. Yeah so a great question because the salt just like for us. If you get out of saltwater you have candidate itchiness on the skin input for some animals. It can be a bit drying as well. So yeah so they've little hoses at the dog park or the dog beaches so you can actually rinse the pats off Just they don't have that on them. Have a bath. The bath is definitely car was trashed. Definitely lots of sand. I think ten pounds of sand came back. Let's go to joshua. Hey joshua how are you doing fine. Thank you where are you calling from today north carolina. What's going on with your animals. So kind of seven year. Old golden retriever and friday morning Got up as normal at his breakfast when back. I looked out there about an hour. Later he's laying in the grass mixed with very large pile of Regurgitated stomach products. Then definitely The breakfast and probably the dinner from the night before In addition to grass that the been intruding on and then progressively through. Today he was getting worse and with diarrhea that turned into bloody stools. throwing up Just becoming completely Out of sorts at not not himself. So i did take him to that. That evening She cleared some things essentially saying he would be okay for the evening. I take my vet in the morning Which we did. She took blood work his Red blood cells white blood cells were basically non-existent and a few other things and then referred us up to nc state veterinary clinic. Emergency clinic up there where they the original possible. Diagnosis was pancreatitis. then started coming around more towards Salmonella now they're looking more at lepto sporozoites okay. Which based on what he did the day before i think is the strong possibility 'cause i had him out for a walk and one of our favorite places and he found himself nice puddle. Got down in there and was drinking. This standing water knows actually listened to your usual one of the things. You advertise if you want a second third fourth and fifth opinion so yeah. I think i'm comfortable with the care that he's getting absolutely Is there any other ideas. Dr wits leptospirosis okay. Yeah so we got a lot of interesting things that could possibilities here. So leptospirosis bacterial disease. And it's one that can have a whole host of different problems in a pat so we can cause problems with the liver with the kid knees with the digestive tract. leptospirosis some parts of the country don't vaccinate it like in the dry areas. Like where i live in las vegas because leptospirosis more common in areas where there's moisture or sitting water or even areas that maybe get a seasonal heavy rainfall or flood. We worry about leptospirosis so the interesting thing is incubating period for lepto is about a week so you know an acute onset me not generally you know if it just happened at that time now if he still had access to that same environment within seven days prior. Yeah that's certainly a possibility. 'cause you know in that part of the country Leptospirosis is definitely on our radar. You the other thing with that infection. That's important to know. Is that areas where we have Rodents like mice rats outside there were one of the little wildlife curious of this disease so that's another Potential exposure risk factor. So if you say a as outdoor anise exposure to rodent's urine than than certainly that could be a way that they can acquire that as well so with the low white cell count if it was significantly low. Then yes i. It sounds like they're looking for things. That would cause a sepsis and salmonella which is another bacteria Would certainly be one of the things we consider. It's a little harder to prove. It's hard to culture for that So we'll often look for with salmonella A normal healthy adult dog the pretty resistant. They don't typically easily get salmonella usually in young dogs Were immunosuppressed dogs other pets. That have some kind of other problem going on. Because we know that if i took a bunch of healthy dogs and kinda swab their butts we might get some annella to grow out of their in. Maybe two percent of the time job with diarrhea we could swap them and maybe four percent of the time. We'll get salmonella doesn't always mean that that's the agent that can cause the disease so we usually kind of diagnose base on potential exposure feeding raw diets being immunosuppressed.

"I'm Lorie Brooks. Hey, it has long been known that talking to a baby improves bonding between a parent and child. But since so many pet parents these days view their pets is their own Children. Scientists were wondering Just talking to your dog. You know, in the same way that you would talk to an infant. Does that have the same bonding effect and a recent studies suggest that yes, it does. Researchers at the University of York over in the U. K set out to investigate if what is called dog speak, improves bonding between pets and humans, and specifically whether or not it is useful for dogs to hear that. High pitched baby talk as we call it well after their experiments, they found that adult dogs were more likely to interact and spend time with those people that had used that dog directed speech with dog related content, though They were liking those people more than they like those who used adult directed speech with no dog related content. If you're confused, let me explain, cause that's really important. Dog related content is you have to talk about doggy related things like you're a good dog, asking the dog or telling him Let's go see a great movie is not the same thing. You want to go for a walk. Do you want to treat That is dog related speech. Unfortunately, I have a difficult time making my voice squeaky and high as we have practiced on this show, baby talk with Dr Debbie. But go ahead and give it a try. This whole study suggests that adult dogs need to hear dog relevant words that are spoken in that high pitched emotional voice that we get when we talk to them in order for them to find it relevant. I think it's amazing that they actually need content that's related to dogs that so don't be talking about Ned in the mail room or anything like that, because they're not interested in that. They want to hear specifically about treats and their food and their toys. When you gonna play with him next to what you're saying, That's exactly it. But I think it's because when we talk to them about things that we know, get them excited. This is my own take. I was not in on the experiments, but that makes the dogs excited. We know that I think we feel it. You know, there is a bond There's Their feelings that go back and forth between us. I could not be as excited telling, you know, Tater do you want to treat as I could saying, Let's have a big potato, you know. Finally, there is a new dog treat headed to pet store shelves soon and though the name alone might make you not want to buy it, I am betting that dogs are gonna love it. Are you ready? There is a woman in Kansas who now has a patent pending on a new treat called Mickey and Mose. But flavored dog treats my daughter love that. I don't want to know how they tested better who found the scent or if it is even sent it like that? To a dog or something, but I bet it sells like hotcakes. It made me giggle. "This is an animal radio. News update. I'm Lorie Brooks about 15,000 pets are going to need to have AH, new microchip inserted because they're old microchip won't work now. And that's especially sad news, since it could lead to some pets being mistaken for strays and put down pets that are microchipped with a product called biotech, which is and that's B. I owe capital T E C and it's manufactured by River back. Those of the chips and pets that air risk here. They have reportedly had problems with this brand in the specific model in the past. Back in 2012, some pets needed new chips implanted because their original biotech chips couldn't be detected when they were scanned. Well, the affected owners then had the chips replaced and the vets just stopped him planting that specific one. And that was the end of the story. Until now, a letter from Vour back has been Posted and sent out also toe veterinarian's offices, etcetera, and it says it now it seems possible that all of the biotech chips might fail over time. So that's about 15,000 pets that could be affected. And when you rely on a microchip, your lord into a false sense of safety in this case, because you're thinking, you know, Mike that's protected. So if you find this online the story, go ahead and share it. And of course, we'll have it on the animal radio, Facebook page and our website. But the biotech microchips of concern specifically these latest cases they were inserted between 2009 in 2012. All microchips. No matter who puts the mountain air makes them have serial numbers. And if the 15 digit number for your pets microchip begins with nine Triple 088. Nine quadruple 088 or nine quadruple 0 10. They need to be replaced. And you know that's like 9008000 a day. And which is why I said Triple zero or quadruple Because instead of counting on my zeros, which I can't even do while I'm talking confuses everybody. Now we get these numbers. How do we know where these numbers are? The honor. Original documentation for? Absolutely We still have that around here somewhere, okay? And that's a good reason Tol let people know you need to save that. And if you don't want to save all of the information, just write down somewhere or store it somewhere online in your notes or something. The number and the manufacturer with the phone number that you call whenever it needs to be updated door replaced with different information, Okay? Yeah, and microchips. Yeah, they say so many pets. But the S P. C. A on DMA. Most vets also suggest putting an idea tag with your name and your phone number on the I D tag on a collar that the pet. Where's because that saves a lot of time. I know I had a dog that was running through the streets recently and I went and got it brought it up to the door. I put it down and then I could see it had a tag on it. That was very clear, and I called, had two numbers. Called both phone numbers got replies from both of them. And within 15 minutes to the owners were here. I didn't have to take the dog to a vet Have the chip scanned and everything else s O I d tags are a good thing to have to. Thanks, Laurie, You're welcome. Now, if you feed your pet raw food or even freeze dried raw food or treats Listen up. Here There is a new study out that has found Rob Pet food and treats often contain food poisoning bugs like E. Coli, salmonella and listeria. That parents, too, are very high risk for diarrhea or vomiting by just handling the raw food, your pets, food bowls or even letting your cat or dog lick your hand after they've had these raw foods. Most human infections that have been linked to dried pig ears and contaminated chicken jerky PET treats. This latest study we're talking about was conducted by Dutch researchers. They analyzed 35 rob pet food products containing mostly chicken, beef or lamb, those of the most common but they found equal light in 28 of those 35 different products. They found listeria in 19 of them and salmonella in seven. And this is really a huge warning to pet parents. So we will have more on this in the news next hour, Right here on animal radio. Joe and Lauren there visiting with us on Skype today from their house where they are taking care of handicapped cats or what they refer to her term is handy cats like that. How many do you have there? We have six currently. We've gotten three over the past year on Ben, we've had We started doing this about six years ago. What made you decide that you wanted to take any handicapped cats? Um, actually, I kind of started it before me and Joe married. I found my first one. When I was 15 years old. Somebody had cut her leg off and left her in a box and I tried to my parents to let me keep her and they did. Had for 16 years And then after she passed, I actually got another cat outside and he was passed out, and I didn't know what was wrong with him. But when I took him into the vet they had diagnosed to my cerebellum hyperplasia. And you wanted to put him down. And I wasn't familiar with the condition either whether that so I had to go home and do a lot of research and join a support group. It turned out. It basically is a condition that affects his motor skills so he can't stand to walk. Wow. So he he's awesome. He's six now. So that's really where really stand from. And then I started dating Joe who didn't like cats. E wasn't of animals. That just wasn't a fan of cats. Was this gonna be a deal breaker? I mean, not only catch but cats that were handicapped. Well, so I only have little time and he kept asking me to come over for dinner. And I was like, Oh, I can't leave my cat. So he's like, all right, you can bring the cat like, just come. So I showed up at his door. And since Little can't walk. He requires a lot of equipment. So I showed up at his door with a captain. You know, a bull in the little box and he literally any cat food man, a matter like it for him. He had hardwood floors, so I don't think he knew what he was in for, but You know, it worked. Um And then it took about two weeks for Joe. To really like bond and start like petting little and b. I don't know, like become a cat first. Let me say about two weeks. I wasn't used to it. Oh, the cats in general, but the cat cats, you know, of course, the association he would rob a lot around. Maybe nervous. I didn't know. Like, you know, I don't know how to handle them. You're not gonna ask, guys, you know, as a vet enduring this is kind of typical for people work that work in my field. Are you in the shelter field or from the veterinary field? Had I'm used to having like defective animals? No, actually, I just always loved cats. Like when I was six years old. Our family dog had passed and there was a cat outside. Some of the parents are going to North Shore Animal League to adopt another dog, and I saw this kind of sign. I thank my parents..
