How are you while i'm good but the better question is how are you. Because this is the first episode together since you have turned forty years old. Well i'm here. You know i. I think when you're young you're like am i gonna make it to forty. I often questioned that. Let me start by saying. You're a gorgeous beautiful sexy hot amazing youthful full of i. Forty and Is just a number. But i do know that you know these milestones may think about things and make you either. Give you sense of urgency or your foot reflect and say shoulda done or i could have done all these things so i just asking you questions about your journey around forty i mean. I think i've had so many thought that i could never saw like i was trying to write a a post about being forty right and i was just like i could write a book about it Because there's so much like. I don't feel any older. And there's so much stigma for a woman around turning forty. It's almost like. I didn't realize that even something that i had been programmed you know growing up is like when you're forty or you're just you're yeah you might be wise but you're just not like that youthful attractive anymore. And that's just something that i think i had in my head and i'm like wait. What made me yesterday. Feel okay in today. Feel like whoa. You know why. Why did that pop into my head but also there were so many great things that came into my mind too but i just i know that everyone else has this on their mind and i remember you know. I've talked about this before But i remember like being my twenties counting down the years until i turned thirty because i. That's what was all over. I thought it was all over. Because that's what everybody made. It seem like that's what every woman made it sound like And then you know in my thirties. I was kinda like privately doing it. Counting down the years until my forties. And here i am and i'm like this is so interesting because it's sure it is and i don't really feel any different but at the same time there's just a lot of things that change in your life because now you are working on like i think all of a sudden in one day i was like whoa instead of looking at like what i'm building and growing. It's like what legacy do. I wanna The mask if you very pointed questions about turning forty k. So i one. What is your and i guess your most because of spy top of what is one of your most proud accomplishments near i forty. I my first forty years the first forty minutes. This is weird for me. Because i there's been so many little things that i haven't let myself like go. Wow i accomplished that. So i guess i looked around at you know just the people in my life who were like showing up for me and wishing you happy birthday in all the people who just really like you know are the solid people in my life and i would say my relationships. I'm most proud of us. goodwin for sure just. Because they're they're the people who at the end of the day they're the ones you're celebrating with and doing things within building and growing and having great conversations with but but i wouldn't have been able to get those relationships i think without becoming in doing the things that i've done not because they're people who would only hang around certain people but because there are people who have standards for themselves of the conversations and types of energy and go-getters getters that they want to surround themselves with so. I think i had this moment of like. Whoa i've got really epoch. People in my life. who are my rider dies. Who like really are doing incredible things in that must mean that. I've done some pretty awesome things as well as a really cool thing too. That's a good answer. All right next question. What.

"Then. She went and launched her own product line. Step pretty much killed the unbiased angle, so you couldn't really rely after evaluations of products anymore I mean. She's not going to be able to give you advice about buying something from. I don't know the. Or Revlon Lori L. meanwhile having a competing product in the marketplace, it just has totally ruined the credibility of that expert now it's understandable why influencers do things like this I mean. It takes a lot of time to write a website or produce a video or record this podcast or any pipe guests. And it's really hard to make money at it. Because consumers everyone accepts, expects the Internet to pretty much be free website should be free. Video should be free. PODCASTS should be free. You know we're certainly not getting rich here of the beauty brains now fortunately, neither Valerie, or I are driven primarily by money. So that's what we keep doing this. But you know if we took sponsorships and we started promoting that stuff. We have a large enough audience that we would start making more money at it, and it's just not a way that we want to do it because we want to keep the beauty braids. Influence free from sponsorships in thing. Anyway, influencers who are trying to make a living doing what they're doing to take sponsored post. They're gonNA have to say things that the advertisers want them to say now it may or may not be what they actually believe is true. I'm sure that someone who says this is a sponsored post. I got paid to do this, but this is what I really believe. Maybe they really believe I. Don't know, but you certainly wouldn't be posting something that you didn't believe in instill taking money for the reality. Is Money taking money to pass on a message? Just biases information, and it's not something that you as a consumer can rely on. The money is good for the influence her and helps with their livelihood, but from a.

"Them are using highly erotic acid. There is unlikely any quality difference in the highly erotic acid that would make one inferior to the other separate from the technology aspect meaning. It's not like one highly erotic acid is destined for trash can and the other really is ultra premium right there. They're the same quality, but there can be different technologies of the same type of ingredient available. You know I think is different from what you would I mean. By Quality I, think one of the things that cosmic marketers try to make it seem like is. Let's. Let's liken this to food. If you go to the store and there are some apples that are kind of rotten, and some that are perfectly new clearly, there's a quality difference there. There isn't the same kind of quality difference when you're talking about cosmetic raw materials. There's just the raw material, right. Now as far as whether, companies can get different technologies or different quality ingredients, there are some cases where companies do have specialized ingredients that only they can get. For example, a company can patent an agree an ingredient in the the biggest patent or in the cosmetic industry is Lori L.. Oh, yeah they have departments and departments. To patent everything not necessarily because they invented something, but they're trying to clean up the competitor's face and prevent people from having technologies but I I digress I'm sorry. No, you're no, you're right they. The Lori L. definitely has a ton of patents where they've clearly done it. Not Not because they want to launch a product with that technology used in that way. They just want to make sure nobody else. Else can use a technology in that way so and and Laurie Al also has some patents which I would say are probably useful. Probably their their biggest recent patent is on the mixer all sunscreen that they have so they patented a sunscreen and they're the only ones who are believes. Use It as an extra. You've a inhibitor, and so it's. It's a molecule that they can..

"After so what what did you I mean I think was like five years after you launch urban decay that you sold it to to LVMH which the company that that includes leave a thon why I want it for the simple reason that there's no intellectual property you can't patent color right meaning what like other companies could could could keep knocking you off see just what you just figured what is this yeah this was it worth the price was worth selling I'm I'm funny money and I believe by the way I think but he is now owned by Lori L. four hundred million four hundred million dollars is not what they paid you and unfortunately right but still you know you started this company it's probably cool to see this around and he's still wrestling with so you have this in Thai yearly other part of your life which is arguably the biggest part of her life which we will now which is a for a sustainable farm in Virginia you'll do you completely off the west coast you built your life in the Virginia countryside where you ray is rare breeds of cattle and pigs and chickens and turkeys and turkeys tell me tell me about that how did that start well you know I was raised on a farm and I believe in eating meat I mean we've got his point eighty three here that's why we survived the ice age which may come again but you know I hate the idea that you had factory farm to me was beyond horrified and I absolutely believe that we did not use that kind of farming when I grew up we formed by my grandfather had a farm which was the manure on the fields and you fed your house good things at the end of the time your caliphate your neighbor I mean we would know more of poisoned our house because we were poisoned our.

"C. geo fifteen ninety eight AM and ninety five point nine FM I sure do appreciate you everybody I have Lori L. in in the house award winning voice over actors I know her from Toy Story family guy come on now well that's where pants right now come on now you know so we are we went to break we were talking about Hey the whole world is connected and you know you you don't want to design your neighbor right compare your neighbor your world connected in what we do all affects each other so it would be hard pressed to have this interview show today and not talk a little bit about Australia and really how animal agriculture you know walking Phoenix was talking about it but you guys are probably already heard about this already animal agriculture does affect climate change so I was just in Australia you have friends in Australia so we can talk about that a little bit but first I just want to give kind of an overly simplified but a version of how animal agriculture affects climate change because it it's hard for people sometimes that to wrap your mind around it so yes house farts and the maintained and yes nothing so everybody loves to talk about house party I think like even adults just love a good fart joke I don't know why people don't know who doesn't doesn't love a good but you don't do it now yeah but it's also their burping and said this gives off methane but more than anything it's also that we cut down trees so if you've ever you know written your bike through the Midwest it's not a forest preserve any longer it's all been chopped down and why because we're growing corn wheat and saw a whole grain items items that have protein do we give this to people who need it known we give it to animal and then picked up picked up we have to give these animals land and water and wait for them to get plump and then we you know so we're using this valuable resource all the studies on our Jeffrey actually helping with poverty things like that and you will be under here and entries you know when we cut them down trees soak up carbon dioxide and they give us back a little thing we need called oxygen right so and then there's also the transportation aspect so not even considering the animals now for a second which obviously is so huge but they ship these animals live from like let's say Minneapolis topping in Las Vegas changing trucks and all the way to California for slaughtering so there's this enormous transportation fossil fuel costs that goes along with that men of course the animals are slaughtered and the the meat is then sent to New York or something yeah it all the transportation all those read my words so labor intensive so as animal agriculture contributes enormously to climate change the I've heard the second largest contributor but there is some figures that say the first largest some say the third it doesn't really matter because it's not like it's not huge it's huge and much easier than fossil fuels to start let's say today or tomorrow really kind of cutting back on the things you know that are affecting you and your neighbor and your children so these are some some of the reasons why animal agriculture leads to climate change which brings us to Australia right I was talking to my dear friend tomorrow lanky and she and her family her sister and I believe it is they run Paul's place which is a wonderful rescue sanctuary for the animals in Kangaroo Island we we send each other silly Facebook messages using those filters because I act like I'm five so we would have so much fun doing that and she had sent me a good holiday you know merry Christmas Eve message and then within a couple days I reached out to her went to her what was going on I thought oh my gosh so we just had a really lovely talk last night for so there's a great you know the funny thing going to keep that up and running and then there was a wave of fires again so it's that it's just devastating and and every way but she just reminded me that you know it's warmer over there in general not part of the world right seven I have which is of course summer now summer's coming sooner yes summer's coming you know faster it's hotter and it's lasting longer and because it is so hot everything is dry so that when the fire start boom it just goes up and it's just awful so that's that's just sort of it in a nutshell I want to read you a quick quote this comes from nearly a Bremen who is a climate researcher at.

It was over an hour west side to Hollywood Hollywood on a Friday is a real beating yeah. I wasn't expecting that is your does on that side of town. It is normal commute like seven minutes. Oh aw by design no you grew up in. La Dead I'm a native that's very rare. It is but to me L. As kind of like mayberry I like to I think for people who come here from other places. It's this sprawling megalopolis yeah but for me I walked down the street and I see like people from kindergarten really yeah yeah and the the same ladies who worked at the bakery when when my mother would take me when I take my son they're still there. Oh that's wonderful yeah zone. Did you grow up in. I grew up in the west side and you go Sam. Oh no you didn't I went to high school. Who Guy was that traumatic? No it wasn't it was it. It's okay because of course from someone that's from Michigan Monica from Georgia. I think Beverly Hills Nine O. Two I think of guys driving Lamborghinis as a school huge mansions was all that in the mix now television television isn't always reality yeah which is gossip for one second. Did you have any famous classmates do ooh. Let's see so David Trimmer from friends older than I was and Nick Cage H was my brothers here all my let's just take a little second there so he's probably the reason I got into acting really. I am so fascinated with him. What an interesting human being? Do you remember him in your high school. I do remember him. You know I was a freshman when he was a senior so I didn't have any interaction with him but I definitely knew who he was. Okay yeah all right now. More mom and dad do totally not in the business. My Dad was a stockbroker and my mom was a travel agent. Yeah you guys got to travel done. When you're younger it means that my mom and dad traveled we did travel though because they often right they'll have travel agents come for free just to give their stamp of approval? Yes trips and my mother would go like familiarization trips. I think it stands for straight to family. I wish so yes. She's been everywhere to travel all she has wanderlust. Yes you know that would be a good partner for me every three days. I WanNa go somewhere else so does she. I think I should introduce you. You know who else does Ted Turner Earner. I watched a sixty minutes segment on him. Jane Fonda said the hardest part about being married to him. was that every three days he's like all right. Let's get on the plane and go somewhere else. I gotTA GET OUTTA here. I can really relate to that now. Did you go directly from Beverly Hills high to Yale. I did okay. I can't imagine you know a lot about Monica and I we've invented a term called UNI file. We are unique files. We really like vs fancy schools. We're kind of obsessed with fancy schools and in Beverly Hills high on top hop of it that's kind of a one to this but yell and then ultimately Stanford Right so I started yelling at my first two years there and then I transferred to Stanford because I got a job working doing motion picture publicity for paramount for the college demographic in the bay area so I had to be the bay area so I laughed so did you have interest in the movie business but I did. I worked after college. I worked in the entertainment business doing what well. I was an assistant at an agency right trial by fire and then I did film development and then moved over to NBC and I was a baby aby executive at NBC the year that E. R. and friends both premier must see TV that was when must see tv was what a timeout now Monica's religion is obsessed with David Trimmer coming. I know who passed that but I felt got it. He plays a he's a reoccurring theme in your life. Yeah I hope somebody I guess I'm wondering how you would get from that on on that trajectory to then psychology and yeah yeah. It's a really non linear path but I think it makes sense in retrospect. I think everything that I've done God has to do with story and the human condition and so when I was working in Hollywood it was all I love story. That was why I wanted to do it. I unloved these rich human stories and when I was working on Er we had this consultant on the show who is an actual er doc and he would you know help choreograph choreograph the trauma basins and make sure that they were accurate. Sometimes we wouldn't always put a mask on George Clooney because why do you WANNA cover that face rory but everything was really really accurate on that show I mean that was because of Joe and I would spend some time in the Er with him and beyond one point he said to me. I think you like it better here than you like your job and I just I love the Er because nobody ends up in an er because something was expected. it's kind of an inflection point in people's lives when you just see people come in and they're they are and so while the show was you know great in terms of really really capturing this this human experience I think seeing it in real life was really fascinating to me and so I did go to medical school so I left. NBC I went to Stanford Stanford from a backup to Stanford to medical school. I don't know if that fits into your obsession with yeah. You're.

Lee right Celsius overwatch league that's been a hot topic for now to two and a half years because it's a completely different change the way people are pursuing their sports business in the same time we've seen the rise about around games and I did two things for the industry give us four nine which is a giant wave them honestly in many ways everybody's wrote a little bit into it also gave us a lot of different types of content creation around these boards I think the open and inclusive nature of battery out games in the quick match times and the fact that it became a popular genre of games to make content around for streamers all of a sudden you saw this hybrid model of like who is this big streamer a pro or is this a business or is the pro somebody I don't know about yet and the streamers is a good entertaining in the game I don't know and then you know when we have competitions I like to travel so it's one of my teams crates and that also blurs the lines of these have been some interesting things in the last year I think several you know we've seen a lot more on the business side a lot more brands and advertisers are to do things a little more off and I could feel a bit better for our fans you know just by the nature of the factors of an existing there's probably like twenty thirty panels going on with different topics is tells you there's a lot to cover in speaking of which.
