Blue Buffalo reached the huge settlement over claims that its products were free of poultry byproducts and did not contain wheat soy artificial colors and flavors or preservatives. Now, laboratory testing, on the other hand, did show that Blue Buffalo did contain byproducts, which then led to charges of mislabeling and of course false advertising and big class action lawsuit. Blue Buffalo has denied any wrongdoing, though, it blames a former supplier for the issue, but said it settled the lawsuit not to admit anything but in order to avoid further litigation expense. There's a cat in Norway that proves towing a sled is not a job for only a dog. You see, if you have not seen this viral video, you would know because it shows two year old Jasper the cat, pulling his owner on a sled along a mountainside trail. But after being towed for a while, his mom is pretty cool. She puts jesper on her shoulder where he sits on downhill parts of the trail, so she doesn't run over him with your skis. But in typical cat fashion, you know, he is a cat. If the pretty orange boy does not feel like being a sled cat that day, he just flat out refuses, sits there, looks at his mom and then jumps into her backpack and sits there in the backpack with that happy smile like I won. And then he gets the day off, of course. Jasper is quite a guy and adventurer guy, and he has his own Facebook page, and he's very entertaining and all of his followers keep up with him on Facebook there with his adventures. He is pretty popular. I'm Lori Brooks. Get more breaking animal news anytime at animal radio dot com. This has been an animal radio news update. Get more at animal radio dot com. It's animal radio, celebrating the connection with our pets. We'll go back to the phones in just a couple of seconds here. But first, want to visit with Danielle. How do you pronounce your last name, deus? Dallas. Well, how you doing? I'm good. Thank you. How are you? Very good. Now you're sitting inside a bathtub. Is that correct? Sure. How many days have you been doing this? Today is day 17. I am doing it for 30 days a lot. I'm sorry, is that Australian or that New Zealand accent I'm having a hard time how many days? 30 days will lap in today is day 17. Today is day 17. Okay. Now why are you doing this? It's to bring more awareness to cetaceans and captivity and mainly the later who's been held kept it might be secret in for nearly 46 years. So now let me translate for those Lolita who's a killer whale there at the Miami sea aquarium and that's where you are, right? Okay, she's been in captivity for 46 years. Did you say? It would be 46 years in August. Wow. How big is the tank that she lives in? I'm not too sure of the exact dimensions I just know that it doesn't make up regulations. It's too small. Okay. Are you getting a lot of attention? Yes. Yeah, I am getting a lot of attention. Most of it is good, which is pleasant. There's a few, you know, I think that you should stay with CES, but they're just, they don't realize who they're actually like a really good sanctuary plan for her. So I think we want to just dump her in the wild, but she want to put her into a safe P and and have to retrain how to hunt for herself and things again. Okay. How long do they live? Does she have a long life left? Yeah, well there's actually an all career out there who names granny and she's about a 102 years old. Wow. The latest mother is still out there and she's about 86 years old. Wow. And the latest the oldest living worker in captivity at the moment. So she's still, you know, she's probably on the middle age, so she'd still have a really good life ahead of her in the wild. So was she there as a baby? Yeah, she was captured when she was about four years old. So she probably doesn't know any different though, does she? No, the orcas they have a really good brain capacity. It's about 5 times the size of ours. And she was played his family's vocals recently like a few years ago and she's still reacted towards them and so she remembers the vocals. Wow, they can understand. So you're sitting in a bathtub to show that, you know, you're in a confined small space. This is not normal. Is there water in the tub? No, no, there's no water. You know what are in your bathtub? No. I would say you'd be a proof. I bet you wish there was some cool water in there when it's hot. Oh yeah. But you'd be all pruney now anyway. You're from New Zealand. Is that correct? Is that where you live right now? Yes, yes, I do. So what made this particular killer whale make you come all the way to Miami to do this? Because once I read about his story and watched the latest slave to entertainment, it was just, you know, she's been there for so long and such a really good viable plan for her to be released. And her mother's still there, it would just make the best happy ending for her. And you know, a lot of the other ones, all those SeaWorld in a search prices are still just as horrific. This one, she's been brought herself since the last technic killed himself. And so it's too small. She can't even die. She's got no shelter from the sun. And to me, she's in there with conditions. So I really wanted to help her and sitting at home signing petitions and following court cases and demonstrations wasn't making me feel like I was really doing anything for her. So that's what I actually need to do something physically. So I came up with the idea to get over here and spend 30 days on the top. Do you think it's going to make a difference? I don't know if it'll make a difference. I'd like to think so, but at least I know that I've tried for her and I would never be thinking, well, what if I did this? What if I'd sit there always know that I did something? What do you normally do for a living? I went for an a line. I back at home and I'm also a man. I have a T cell. So I'm pretty busy. What are your kids think of this? And he's two years old. So he's quite a good age to be doing this where he won't remember mom disappeared for him.

"I have all these dogs to choose from. And out of the dogs, I take Titan, which is not only a pit bull, but is a male pit bull. And everyone thinks that I'm going to be picking a human in a female human and I go home with a nail Pitbull. So Titan gets the rows. And it's a great message. A great message because pitbulls really, they do get a bad rap and especially media. And I'm afraid my peers, when they find a dramatic story about a pitfall mauling or something like that, they run with it. And the fact of the matter is that pit bulls can be very docile and can be very friendly and very loving, right? Well, a 100% and pitfalls are in born to be aggressive and to fight. Usually and I would say in over 90% of the cases, whenever a pit bull bites, it's been trained by donor to do that. And they're smart guys and they're very loyal dogs and they listen to their owners. So if the owners rewarding the dog for biting another dog or biting a human, it's positive in reinforcement to the breed, and that's where they get all the bad rap from. It's not, it's not because of that breed it's because of how they've been brought up. And. Humans aren't that different either. If we're going up in our parents are telling us that feelings good, we believe our parents and we want to make them proud and we continue to steer but not because we want to do it because we want to make sure that our parents are proud of us and in a way that that's how people react when all they want to do is prove their owners and if you take a puppy pit bull a simple that's never been anyone, that dog is the most lovable breed that you can find out there is in my opinion. Absolutely. Well, you know, the big biters are like doxxing. And it's just that. Yeah, but they're just not as strong. They don't inflict as much damage so they don't make headlines when you get bit by a dachshund that chihuahua. We're with prince Lorenzo borghese. Are you still a bachelor? Bachelor. Okay. I'm Laurie Brooks, if you are a pet parent, well, there's a few days of the year that you probably dread like New Year's Eve and the 4th of July. Fireworks just drive animals crazy, especially dogs with their sensitive hearing. Many, in fact, will hurt themselves trying to escape the noise or hide. Dogs can bolt and then they risk getting lost or hit by a car, many wind up in shelters. Well, one town in Italy is now taking a huge step to reduce the fear of fireworks in their non human population. They're making a new law that fireworks in their town must now be silent as a way of reducing the stress that the loud noise can cause to animals, not just pets, but also to wildlife too. All right, wait a minute now. It's okay, 'cause I have to comment on something. Of course. How do you sell fireworks that are silent? I want to go into that market because the company that makes it. Really? Yeah, that's what I found in the article. There's a company that makes them and they're starting to do booming business. But I thought the same thing. That would be no pun intended. How much? Let's think about this now. We might corner the market here. I don't know how they do that. It's a little silencers on each one. I like the visual better than the noise. Three months ago, a dog named pirate and his owner arrived at a hospital in Argentina. The dog's owner had to go into the hospital for surgery, but sadly he passed away. Pirate, though, never let the hospital and now he roams the halls, hoping to meet up again with his human. Hospital workers don't even know their dogs real name, so they dubbed him pirate because they say no matter how hard they tried to keep him outside of the hospital. He got into the house center and visits the last place that he saw his owner alive. That was room four O four. Well, according to a local newspaper there, when the pet owner died, the hospital staff, one of the dog gone. However, their feelings towards pirate have changed a bit when they realized how loyal a dog he was, now pirate has been officially adopted as the hospital's mascot and comes and goes as he pleases. In fact, they say nobody really knows where they can find pirate during the daytime hours, but at night he can always be found comfortably sleeping outside room four O four. I'm Lori Brooks. You know, the kind that are used to train cats and dogs. And they want to know if residents of the country believe that shock collars should be banned. We, of course, here at animal radio think so, but whales, Sweden, Denmark, and Germany have already banned shock collars. But supporters of them say that they can be used successfully as a last resort and have compared the pain inflicted to just a static shock. Australian and Swiss researchers meantime have revealed that while kangaroos emit low methane with flatulence, that's right. That transplanting their unique gut bacteria is not going to give the same results in other animals. And it doesn't matter what other findings have been revealed among studies and researchers. It's always been known that kangaroos would produce only a tiny amount of methane if they were together in large populations, mostly because they say kangaroos pass gas instead of burping like cows and sheep. So now scientists reveal that kangaroos produce low amounts of methane because of the way that food moves through the kangaroo stomach. Not because of the unique gut bacteria. Seems like we always get so excited about results that come from studies early. The journal of experimental biology studied debunks other studies that claimed introducing the kangaroo's unique bacteria to cows and other high methane producing animals would reduce greenhouse gas emissions. But we're going to have to look for something else. Millie, the basset hound has a new famous mom and dad. Millie was picked up by animal control while she was obviously a stray dog and was found begging for food outside of a Mexican restaurant in Southern California. Good luck you guys. I'm Lori Brooks. Pretty good. What's up with your cat? Okay, we was living in one place, and we decided to be bigger, so when you're good at another modular immunity. But before we moved over to moderate, he did say my accent. Urinate in the floor all the time. In Holland. Last moved out of there, now he's wanting to go in the living room. Okay. And when he's urinating, where is he urinating exactly in the center of the room against the walls and the corners? Basically about any order he decides to one time it can be in the middle of the floor or one time to be close to the wall. And does the key to go outside? Or are we just staying inside? And is he a neutered kitty? Has he been filtered? And do you have other cats running around the house too or just him? Holy cow. Yeah. Ah, now do any of those cats come inside? Hell, they sneak in. Okay, all righty. It's a very confusing situation when he's got different signals and different thoughts. Cats that are indoors can live a happy indoor existence, but when we start to have personalities and cats that they're seeing and smelling that live outside, then there's a whole territory kind of question. So it's very possible that your Katie could be having problems where he's trying to mark his turf. I first want to make sure we don't have a health problem and you always should have a urine check to make sure we don't have any infections or stones or problems of those natures. But boy, it really sounds like he has the possibility that he is just frustrated. So we really need to figure out some way to accommodate his world differently. We would want to either keep the blinds closed, keep the other cats out and let him live his happy indoor existence. Or make an accommodation where, you know, we've got a certain cat that stays inside with him. There's so much that goes into the marking of their territory that some cats will spray on corners, some will spray in the middle of the floor, others will go into bathtubs and sometimes right in front of your very face. So I really want to make sure that we kind of block the scenario where these other cats could be seeing your kitty. And then at the same time, make sure everything's kosher with that litter box because if it stinks, your cat's not going to want to use it. So you want to make sure you change the litter frequently. Sometimes we'll even play around with the litter types and try some different varieties out there for your kitty. But if there's any concerns, I'd definitely make sure we get them checked out with the vet, give them a clean bill of health in his urinary tract, and then work on some of those environmental things where we can try to modify things.

"Research? Well, we certainly need more research, particularly since it has indications for potentially seizures. Anti quality of life parameters, et cetera. So I mean, we need to do the research but unfortunately the DEA has folks running scared about using it. And so until the DEA actually comes around and says not to that we can start using it, there are a whole bunch of logistical things that are going on now between CBD being classified as a schedule 5, drug, which means anybody can use it anywhere any time. However, the DEA has put stipulations on where it can come from and whether the FDA has approved it. The farm bill is a whole different thing which in essence supersedes anything that the DEA is talking about right now. And I think that we'll see this open up as the farm bill in 2018 gets passed and people are less scared of what the DEA may or may not say because of the national growth regulations that will be allowable. And we need more research for sure, but I think it's going to be a couple of years before we see it. Okay, I appreciate your time today. Thank you so much for visiting with us. Doctor Jo. Doctor Joe walk, joining us. And I think that he echoes pretty much what you said, doctor Debbie, that it might be too early, and that we're just waiting for the research to find out what this stuff does. Yeah, and to make sure there's no harm done because there's certainly potentials for drug interactions that we can't warn people about. So, okay, so I'm ignorant. What does CBD stand for? Cannabidiol. So that's the extract instead of THC. Which is the psychotropic cannabidiol is more kind of used for the anti inflammatory, it doesn't have the mood altering the psychedelic kind of properties. I'm Lori Brooks, a new study has come out and started some conversation around how pets may be getting anxious and some even depressed when we spend too much time on our phones. Actually, this study was mainly about the positive effects that pets have on people suffering from mental illness, but somehow the attention shifted to become about how, when we spend time on our phones and devices instead of engaging with our pets that were essentially ignoring them because they're right there in the room, which can make them feel lonely and isolated. Several animal professionals have even come out on this saying that this is a very real problem these days. When veterinary surgeon in the UK said to understand what's going on, you have to look at the basic principles of how a dog interacts physically and emotionally with the human, because a dog is a social creature, a pack animal, and to the dog, you, meaning the pet parent, are the bona FIDE leader of their pack, but if you're perpetually attached to your phone, that vital Bond kind of breaks down. I notice myself doing this at times, and I will think, okay, stop. You know what? It's really easy to quit Facebook. I've done it. I'm a man of little discipline. Should I say? But I quit Facebook, and now my time is the present with my animals. And I have to say, I see a lot of people in my neighborhood walking their dog, and they're at the same time. And you know what? This is all about being present. In the moment, you're walking your dog, enjoying the outdoors, put the darn phones down because you're going to hurt yourself or your pet by not paying attention. Here, here. Let's drink to that. One of my favorite all time videos is the woman walking in the shopping mall and looking at her phone and she stumbles into a water fountain. Yes, I love that. That's one of the videos that you were watching when you were not present. Yes. Yes. No, it was actually on TV because it was so funny. This was many years ago. That authorities in Kansas City, Missouri. They discovered that they had an unexpected occupant several of them. In fact, when they went to a Victor man from his grandmother's home, now it was his grandmother's home because his grandmother was in a nursing home. So inside the house, police found the man. They were looking to evict along with. Three snakes are rabbit named dinner. I don't like names like that. And also a 7 foot 200 pound alligator. So animal control. Remember, this is Missouri, was called in, and they removed the gator. The grandson said that the gator was only 15 inches long. Four years ago, and it just grew bigger over time on the diet of chicken nuggets steak deer and fish. And believe it or not, officers said this alligator was kind of like a dog who didn't really know he was an alligator. And the grandson was interviewed later and added that the gator is actually afraid of the dark and thunderstorms, but for now, it's a pretty sad situation. The Gators being kept at a wildlife rescue center, which is home to several other illegal pet alligators that got too big for their owners. You know what? And I think he feeds the alligator bagel bites from what I heard. Bagel bites too. We're trying to track him down. He's a hard guy to track down. We want to talk to him on the phone. Yeah, but he got evicted. So it's tough. It's cell phone, you guys. Come on. Those things that we spend too much time on? The stories and the reports about this change. It's a 6 foot alligator. It's a 7 foot alligator. I think that some of the press and the media are kind of glamorizing this whole thing. And trying to make it even more impressive, because let me tell you, 6 foot, I wouldn't have thought anything, but 7 feet, I want to see that story. Wow, but it's amazing, yeah, that it started 15 inches and four years, even if it's four feet slithering around your house. That's still pretty big. What was his name here, gator gator? No, you know. Catfish. Catfish. Catfish. Yes. Well, here in my house, I am the chief pet feeder. And one of my biggest gripes is I'm, you know, I want to hear what you guys have too is your big gripe about this. Is that when feedbacks have a really cheap ziploc on them, then it doesn't seal well?

"Much, Judy, for making it the big, big shoe. You're welcome. Pet insurance. I know you're scratching your head. Do I have it? Should I have it? Well, that's what I'm doing. Maybe you already have it. Maybe you'd maybe you've already made up your mind on pet insurance, but today Doc halligan from the Lucy pet foundation will be joining us and she'll tell us all about pet insurance from her angle, which is as a veterinarian, whether or not you should have it. And what is it good for? You know, I always thought maybe I should just sock a little way in an interest bearing savings account. Some of us are disciplined to do this. Some of us aren't. Are you? No, not really. Me neither. But it sounded good, didn't it? Joey, what's on the docket for you today? Well, we're going to talk about the proper way of removing ticks off of your pet. Can't you just grab them with your fingers? Yeah, I have. You know what, depending on how you pull them out, you don't want to leave anything behind, but we'll talk about that. That's on the way right here with Joey. On animal radio and Lori Brooks in the newsroom, what are you working on? Well, you know there's lots of offices these days where you can take your pet to work every day. It's usually dogs, right? Now we're finding out about some rather unusual pets that want their equal time in the office. And we'll tell you what more of those unusual animals are coming up. Oh, I can't wait. I'm engaged. But let's go to the phone first for doctor Debbie. We have Debbie dueling Debbie's hey Debbie, how are you? Good, how are you? Good. How can we help you today? Well, my husband and I are having a friendly debate. Over. I don't do marital counseling. That's where I draw the line. The dogs, we have two little shits, and my husband thinks it's okay to give them meat bones. And I totally disagree because they splinter. Even the rawhide has me worried, even though they eat these chicken strips at night, I'm not quite sure if there's raw height in it. That's like their bedtime treat, but I'm beginning not to trust anything. You know, with the China stuff going on and all that. So what is the answer to this? Well, what I will tell you is there really is no safe to item for dogs. Meaning there's nothing that is perfect. There's always going to be some type of inherent risk when we offer a chew item for a dog. And veterinary Dennis will tell you that anything that if you took the item and smack it on your knee, if it hurts you, it could hurt your dog's teeth. And that is actually when we talk about teeth, the real fact is that bones in many cases will lead to fracture of the teeth. Where the part of the enamel can actually crack off and we'll have a broken tooth. So yeah, it may clean the teeth, but if you have to have a root canal or to repair a damage to or to extract a tooth that's already been damaged. That's very clean. Yes. So there really, and so that's kind of the big argument with bones. And then there's a lot of folks that will say cooked bones versus raw bones, one's better versus the other. When it comes to this tooth injury, it really doesn't matter. You know, cooking actually can increase the risk that a bone might splinter. But in general, I'm not a fan of feeding bones of any sort to my animals. So the next step down that you can look at as you mentioned raw hides, so for a certain pet, those two could have the same kind of problems. We can run into where it can cause injury to the teeth. If they have, if you have a little strips or the little knotted raw hides, they can get sloppy and they can actually get pieces of those where they choke on them. So that can be a risk. The other thing with raw hides. They can, yeah, they get a large enough piece and they don't have and they don't digest it well. It definitely can. So that is a risk. The other thing I used to have with my dogs, my labradors, they had to have something to chew on. So I gave them the compressed raw height, which is not the kind where they chop the right item to cute little shapes and they press it with green color or red color for the holidays. But it's a very firm, heavy duty rawhide product that's compressed under high pressure. Those I do sometimes recommend for a dog that is really destructive, choose things and we have to offer something. But there's still the risk. You can still get a piece of that where at the end of it where they can choke on that. So you really have to use these kind of things with supervision. The other thing some dogs will have will be if they have a food allergy. A food sensitivity. You know, any of these are meat products so that can definitely cause some problems or even just a I see like an osmotic diarrhea because they are a lot of salt and a curing in them so that a lot of dogs will have just mucus Y poops the day after. These are kind of bendy, no special shape to them at all. They get one before bedtime. That's like their big deal. And they queue it very slow because our one shit's barely has any teeth. But the other one, but they love them. And if I was to hit my leg with it, you know, they're soft. But not real thought, but you know what I mean? They banned. I worry more about this China made stuff in these dogs dying. Yeah, yeah. So the point you don't know what to do. Right. So I think a lot of it we have to look at the size of the dog, the chewing desire, are we looking for something for offering dental care or often entertainment because a lot of times the dental care, the best thing we can do is to brush our dog's teeth. That's the number one thing we can do. From there, if we're looking for an edible alternative for dogs, even with those soft little chews, a little raw hate shoes, a little flavored things. If they get a piece of that, they can still have a choking hazard with that. So you still have to observe them and really supervise them with that. I will tell you that for my large bouille, I do use the large nylon type products. I always buy the U.S. made ones. But knowing that, there's the risk that they can break their teeth because these suckers are hard. Anything to do with them. Yeah. So that's where you have to find. For small dogs like that, you don't necessarily have to pull out something really heavy duty. You may have some other kind of mid range. And even using things like some of the different Kong products, we can put squeezy cheese in there or peanut butter and freeze it. It gives them something to do. They can lick, they can chew and as long as their jaw force isn't so strong that they're going to eat pieces of the rubber. That's a great entertainment for some dogs. It's the folks with those rottweilers and the great Danes that are really struggling to find something that's a viable chew option because they will destroy it just about everything. Yeah. Well, thank you. That helps and I guess I'll stay married. Oh, good. Good. So we didn't really answer the argument who's right here, though, did we? Well, you know, it's just I've just never, I just don't like the bone theory. I used to give my big dogs the knuckle bones. Like the real big ones, but we've got these little guys now and I just don't do it. I can tell you, I've had a household with two labradors, a client that I saw in both dogs. Their upper fourth premolar, which is the large what we call the carnival tooth, both dogs chewed on knuckle bones, and they both broke all of them. So we had to extract four teeth between the two dogs. It's a big tooth to lose. So yeah, it's not fun. Sometimes you can't win. Yeah. I appreciate your call today, Debbie. Hi glee. Hi, how are you? Good, how are you doing today? Good. How can we help you, doctor Debbie's right here? I know my boyfriend is going to try to get my birthday or learning to talk, but we can not understand what they're trying to say. Okay. And if you could tell me a little bit what you're trying to say, I know there's pretty bird. And that's it. All I have to put you on speakerphone, okay? Okay. Okay, so we're trying to decipher what your birds are trying to do. And I can't decipher it all because this is about the time eating, they get really cognitive. Okay. And they want this a little bit. Okay. Okay. Okay. That makes me if I can get my nose or crystal Katrina. Chris and Katrina. Okay.

And as well as a picture of this year's winner of the world's ugliest dog. No, he's cute. You know what? I feel on the edge about that because you know, I mean, calling him ugly is not really, that's right. But I got to tell you, very cute dog. Yes, he is. So check that out. And his name, what is it? Sweepy, sweepy, sweepy Rambo. And it's spelled. In fact, that's what we're going to tell you. What kind of dog she is in what she looks like, how old she is. What she weighs, all of the things that a human woman would kill you for revealing. We are going to tell you about the world's ugliest dog contest winner. Who is the cutest, you know? I have to say Chinese crested. They don't age well generally. Yeah. Do they look the same when they're puppies? I've never seen any puppies. As puppies, they're obviously the ones that don't have hair, don't have hair, but a lot of times they'll get the blackheads, the whiteheads all over their skin. They tend to have horrific teeth, so a lot of times they are either falling out or they've been removed, so they tend to have the tongue that hangs out. So yeah, they're really just aren't a breed that is pretty, at that stage. So yeah, you just answered a question for me because I guess now that I think about it, every time I see a picture of them, their tongue is hanging out, and that's because their teeth, what's the deal with that? Yeah. Well, it's a breed that genetically, their teeth are just really not good. They have a lot of gingival disease, a periodontal disease. So they tend to have problems and have teeth lost very young. So it kind of goes along with the breed trait. And so just like people from England, right? I can't believe you said that. I can't either. You know, send your complaints. This is not necessarily the views of the radio station. I'm just saying, okay, the poor little Chinese crested. They're very, very cute. And I would take offense if someone called me ugly. So I want to say this year's winner sweepy Rambo, you're a cutie. Yes, and we're still going to have all of the English fox terriers, the English setter owners still calling into the show and tuning in. So please still listen to us. What else do we have? Anything else on the news coming up? No, that was my big surprise. Yeah. Oh, and what her favorite thing to do is. Should we be hobbies? She has a favorite hobby. Well, her gag can afford a lot more now that he won 1500 bucks off of her. Okay, that's on the way. Don't give away too much now. You're listening to animal radio, call the Dream Team now with the free animal radio app for iPhone and Android. This is animal radio baby. Hello animal radians, it's Robert Zimmer, your pet world insider here with this week's animal radio list 5 summer family outings that can include dogs. Summer's a wonderful time of year and for many, it's a great opportunity for the family to be together and make lifelong memories. It should go without saying that it's also a great time to take your dog with you for some of these activities. Let's start with family outings to local regional and some state parks. Taking your dog with you is like giving them a giant all day birthday party. The new smells, sights, and activities are just what the dog ordered. Make sure you check with the park's regulations and adhere to the rules for the safety of your dog and others in the park. Additionally, know what activities you're likely to participate in and decide ahead of time whether your pup will be doing the same thing. If so, prepare for those activities for both of you. A day in the park is certainly something your dog will be up for and find continuous joy in. Number two is hiking local trails. If you have an active dog who enjoys getting out and exploring with you, this is a great time of year to do this. Make sure you bring water for your dog and also take note of the cement and ground temperatures to make sure that your dog is not burning his or her paws. Additionally, make sure that when you finish the hike, you clean their paws and do a snout to tail check for any unwanted critter hitchhikers like ticks. Let's move on to water fun. Whether it's boating surfing or swimming, many dogs love the water as much as humans do. If your dog displays a love of water and is safely enjoying it, you have a real treat in store when you take them with you for your water adventures. If they're on a boat, surfboard or even paddleboard have the proper safety gear for them. Life jackets are a must as even the strongest swimmers can get tired and will appreciate that extra layer of safety. Some states have dog beaches specifically designed for the enjoyment of the ocean by humans and their dogs. It is such an inspiring thing to see dogs of all sizes, shapes, and breeds enjoying the beach much like little kids do. Camping is another popular summer activity that dogs seem to love. The smell of nature, sleeping in a tent, and reconnecting with nature in a way that their ancestors would be proud of. Plan for and bring a similar amount of supplies for your pet as you would for yourself or others. And try to avoid changing their daily habits too much as it can cause upset stomachs, lethargy, and even anxiety. Being in nature will be change enough. Finally, if roughing it means something a bit more upscale for your pooch. Remember that more and more resorts are catering to families who want to bring their pets. They offer special activities, services, and much more. This year, consider taking your dog with you on vacation. Summer vacation plans and excursions can include the entire family. It takes some planning and care, but it's certain to add more joy and memories to your activities. Share your favorite summertime dog activities and more on our animal radio, Facebook page. Remember, if you have questions about anything you've heard on today's show, visit us over at animal radio pet or download the animal radio app for iPhone Android and BlackBerry all updated all new. Go online to find a friendly dot com and subscribe today. This is an animal radio news update. I'm Lori Brooks, hey, this might be perfect for that new MTV summer show have you seen it? Pimp my pooch. No, really? Does that really exist? Yeah. Oh wow. Yeah, if you're looking to give your pet a fashion makeover, the disco dog is the coat for your dog. And let me tell you why, because this thing is way too cool. It's got colored flashing LED lights, and then you can choose to have the lights flash in preset patterns, kind of like you know what you'd see on a Christmas tree or something. Or if you prefer, you can spell out a word by inputting text and then have it scroll along the coat where your dog actually becomes a walking digital billboard. It also makes your dog visible in the dark. And check this out. You and your dog are walking along and it's wearing the disco dog coat. You get separated somehow in a crowd. Automatically lost dog will scroll across the coat as soon as you lose Bluetooth connection to your phone. Because it knows that, you know, your dog is not there. So bystanders will say, you know, lost dog and everything works. It's functional. It'll keep your dog warm and it's fun. And if you want to invest in it, you can get all the details over on KickStarter. I want one. Yeah, we need it. Yes. In the UK, there's an overweight cat whose name is pot fin. She is one of the 12 finalists in a weight loss competition that they've got there for pets, and it's all part of encouraging animal health in the area. Now, puff's owner says that she entered the nearly 17 pound cat in the competition in hopes of helping her overcome the damage done by puffs previous owners. And that was apparently because it was a stressful household that puff lived in, and she became an obese emotional eater because of all the stress she was under and now puff is so large. She was actually too big to fit inside of a cat carrier, so when her family adopted her, they had to use a dog crate to bring her home. Dieting now has been kind of hard on puff and her mom says that her big girl cat is still very determined to try and sneak extra food. Just like we try to do. And that she's caught puff eating the fish food, not the fish but the fish food from the fish tank before. Buff, by the way, is competing with four other cats, a total of 6 dogs, and a rabbit in the 6 month diet and exercise program. Well, seriously, there's now an electronic games console just for dogs. Okay, it is no Xbox One. That's for sure. But the clever pet interactive treat dispenser does get your dog playing. It is pretty clever. Three paw sized buttons light up in different ways and they create puzzles for your dog too. Solve. And hopefully, if they successfully solve that puzzle and repeat it as it was done, then they get a treat. The cool part is that the puzzles keep getting harder so that keeps your dog, you know, engaged and stops them from having too many treats. Now, I don't know about you, but this I am a SAP. I am someone who thinks the uglier everyone else thinks an animal is, I think, the cuter it really is. I'm with you there. You hear like me and how then you would really love the winner of this year's ugliest worlds ugliest mind you world's ugliest dog contest. She is just a wrinkled wispy haired bony Chinese crested chihuahua. Her name is sweet pea Rambo. And let me tell you, this is a special girl. She is 17 years old, blind in both eyes only weighs four hands. So that's not much bigger than if you put both of your hands together. She's just a teeny tiny thing. She was a crowd favorite at the contest in Petaluma, California. Sweet peas favorite thing to do, ride with her dad on his motorcycle, can you imagine that? Four pounds. And her dad, lucky guy, he won $1500, and a 6 foot tall trophy for sweet peas victory. Sweet pea is absolutely adorable. I posted a picture over the website, but I got to say one thing, it seems like the Chinese crested always win these contests. Yeah, pretty, almost every year. Every once in a while, something else will win. I'd like to make the lack of hair people aren't used to. It's probably it. It does have some hair, but just in the weirdest places. Spiky little hair here and there. But you know, the good thing about that contest is they have to sign papers saying that they have not done anything to alter the dog's appearance. It's got to be totally natural. Good. Which is good because that's, you know, who knows who would do what for 1500 bucks in a big honkin, 6 foot tall trophy. Yeah, yeah. You should check out the picture at the website. I'm

"Diseases that the animals that you sleep with at night can give you the cats, the dogs. Mostly cats, I think, today, and that's on the way here in just a few minutes. Don't forget you can ask your questions from the animal radio app for iPhone and Android. It's a free download. We just got this email in and you can email us at your voice and animal radio dot com. This comes from Donald hall, and he says, I wanted to let you know that I first discovered animal radio on coast 103.5 in Los Angeles. I always listen to them on iHeart radio. I actually live in Arkansas. So he lives in Arkansas. He's online listening to a station in Los Angeles that we're on. Thank you so much for that. He's decided to go and download the app animal radio app. So that he can listen anytime and he really likes to do that. He says he's lost two different dogs. Sorry to hear about that, Donald. But having them both, he just can't be happy without animals, so he's gone out and got another crazy dog who just loves him. And when he comes home from a bad day at work, the dog cheers him up and he forgets all about his bad day. Doesn't that happen to all of us? Yes, it doesn't mean she walk in that door. How can you be mad when you look down at that furry little thing that's their wagon their tail? I hear you, Donald. Thank you so much for your email. And thanks for downloading the animal radio app. It's so easy to download and it's free. So do it now. We're going to head to the phones in just a couple of seconds. Lori Brooks is also working hard in the newsroom. What do you got coming up? Well, there's all kinds of pet walkers out there these days, but mostly they walk dogs, right? Uh huh. There was a post that went viral recently and we'll tell you about it. What this woman posted that she was looking for somebody to walk. Very different kind of animal. I'm thinking about the TV show what was it kings and queens and the dog walker would actually have to walk the father in law? Father in law take him from everything. I don't think that's what it is, but we'll find out. No, no. In just a few minutes right here on animal radio. And we have John, hey, John, how are you doing? I'm good. How are you guys doing? Very good. Where are you? I'm in Oklahoma. What's going on? A fine day in Oklahoma. That's actually their motto, isn't it? Fine day in Oklahoma. Oh, yeah. So you got pets? You got animals? I do have a dog. Yeah, what's going on with your dog? I have the Doc right here. Hi, John. How are you? I'm doing fabulous. I've got a three year old lab really active. The only thing is when he does have an active day, he tends to have a seizure in our even during he's doing his exercises for when he's hunting. And I've had a few people that tell me care of syrup in the water and step like that. But I'm a new listener to y'all and I just figured I'd call in and see what you guys had to say. Sure. Now, so he's actually active and he's running, he's hunting. He's doing things when this happens. Well, yeah, a few times it's done it whenever he's been hunting, but most of the time it's whenever we get back to the house and he kind of winds down and then you see him over there and he's got that look in his face like something's happening and then it comes on and I just was going to see what you all thought. And when he's well, I'm kind of, can you describe a little bit what he's doing when he has these episodes? Is he twitching? Is he cancer up? You know, it's like his claws come out, you know, and sometimes as though eyes just get real wide and at first I didn't know what to do so I just let him go because you know I've heard human lives if you see somebody having a seizure you just let him go. Well, he would take off running and.

I'm sorry, I messed it up last time, so I don't want to do it again this time. He'll be on the way to tell us how he's teaching his dogs to fly planes. It might be something you could get into, you know? I'm just saying, maybe your dog is a very talented dog and you'd like it to fly you around. Yeah, well, you relax and have a cocktail and if you happen to own your own plane now, I of course don't own my own plane. So they'll drive me around town. Occasionally. I also want to show today Doc halligan. She's talking about zoonotic diseases. And these are the diseases that your animals can give you. I'm starting to itch again. It makes me itchy. I don't want to freak you out, but today she's going to be talking about cats. Uh oh. And in particular, cat scratch fever. That is actually not just a Ted nugent song, but a disease that you can get from your cats. And that's just one of the diseases she's talking about. I also want to show today Robert Zimmer with backyard safety, the things you need to know about keeping your dogs and other animals in the backyard during the summer. So that's just around the corner right here on animal radio. Joey velani, what are you working on? Well, we're going to talk about some cool tips of growing hair when you have dogs that don't grow hair on that ears and on their tail. What you can do real easy at home. Really, I've never seen that problem. Is that something you see? You know what? You probably have because it's super common and you probably just never recognize it. It's one of those things that it only bothers the people that it bothers. So if that makes any sense, usually the dog will look cute when they have hair on the ears or in the tail anyway. So it's one of those things. So you're going to have a tip for growing the hair back. Yeah, because we had a, we had a listener that wrote me a letter. Asking me a question. So I'm being nice and I am answering that question. You're a giver that way. And Lori Brooks over there in the newsroom also will give her and sharing the newsroom with several dogs once the loud snore is, I believe, Gordy. Is that Gordy? Courtney. What are you working on over there in the newsroom? There is a country that is trying to make it mandatory that all dogs and cats there be neutered or spayed, they call it de sexing there. It sounds really kind of scary. Yeah, it does. Wow. Sounds like my life. There's a bill that they're trying to push through in one state in the country that is trying to become the first state in America to outlaw declines. So we'll tell you where all this is going on. Also, we've been talking the last few weeks about cloning and today we're going to have one of these experts on from via Jin pats. This is the company that does the cloning and they're going to answer some frequently answered questions or frequently asked questions about cloning. Did you see, I think it was the new NBC news show that is going head to head with 60 minutes, but they did. A special with Harry. No. The other one who used to be on CBS. Harry Smith, I think. Okay. And he did, he went to Korea, one of the Koreas. I think it's South Korea, where they're doing the cloning there, where it was first done. And it was a really interesting piece. They talked to a couple who paid a $100,000 and got two clone puppies. Yeah, if you're interested in that last year, TLC, the learning channel. I guess it was two years ago. The learning channel came into our studios with somebody who paid a $100,000 more to clone their pet and did a piece and that piece is actually up at our website and our YouTube page if you want to see that. But we're going to find out what this is all about because there's a lot of questions. It's very controversial subject. I might say, but there's maybe some good reasons to be doing this and it might be just genetically preserving the genes for future medical issues. These are the questions that I want answered and we're going to find out today right here on animal radio. Also, braunwyn Dickey. Is this a real name? Yes, it is. Change it for show business. Bronwyn Dickey will be joining us. She's a pit bull expert. And I'm looking at her bio and it says that she's an essayist in a journalist who's worked and appeared on slate, newsweek, outside, and she's young, passionate, and extremely smart. That's what it says here. Unlike me, I'm old apathetic and just a real idiot. Belinda hay Belinda, how are you? And how are y'all today? Good, where are you today? I'm an eastern North Carolina. Eastern North Carolina, I love your accent. I love that stuff. Well, I've got a question regarding an infection that has been reoccurring on my dog. She's a two year old flat coated retriever. Okay. And would start getting little spots on her stomach like fire ant bite. And at first, that's what I thought it was and just made sure to kill them all and get them gone. But it would get worse. Where she biting at it and scratching and licking like crazy. Okay. So that had us try prednisone. And given our benadryl, and that would clear it up until the prednisone, we would wiener off of it. And we tried to round with that. And a friend of mine, she has a cocker spaniel with similar problems, and they discovered it with the yeast infection. Yeah. So I tried some shampoo. I looked it up on the Internet and tried some shampoo that has got an article in front of me. I can't find it. But had I like 2% medicine in it. And there's no make it cleared it up. It's been why no problems whatsoever. The problem now is it won't go away from the skin behind her pads. So it comes up on the leg and someone mentions food. She had been eating beneficial. And they recommended a premium, you got to pet smartly get. And her stomach is still good, but for feed her better, but she still licking and biting at them. And the first one all right. So I was.

And now last week and back the last couple of weeks we've been talking about what happens when you lose your pet. Who do you call? I've never lost a pen. Really? Nope. Lori, have you lost a pet ever? I did when I was babysitting my parents dog. I think this was before the days of microchips. And yeah, that was a scary time. That was in the days I remember going around and putting up papers on telephone poles. Please call. On his own? Yeah. Oh, that's good. If you're having trouble finding your pet, there's always a PI, a private investigator for your pet. There's actually one that actually looks for animals. That's her job. Her name is Jamie Katz, and she's joining us today. Hi, Jamie. How are you doing? Hey, I'm good. How are you? Very good. So you're a private investigator or a pet detective is what you call yourself. Is that correct? Yes, that's correct. How did that come about? What led to that? So I've always worked with animals usually it was in a rescue fashion. Since I was 11, 12, 13 years old, and in 2014, my neighbor's cat went missing. And I went online to see if somebody had found her. She had never been outside before, and she was 14, 15 years old. And I went on Craigslist, and I saw this ad, and it said, we're private investigators. And we find lost dogs, cats, and gerbils. And then it said, and then it said that we had tracking dogs. And my first thought was that is so stupid. You know, how can dogs find dogs or dogs find cats? How can that be possible? And then my second thought was, okay, I got to call them. So I ended up contacting them, and they told me that, you know, they had the handler call me and they said that she'd be on her way. And I me and my friend waited for three days for these people to show up and every day they called and every day they said they were on their way and they never showed up. So that led me to, you know, I have new focus in life. I needed to find out Ken lost pets or Ken dogs find lost pets because if they can, then I'm going to do this for the rest of my life. And we found honey on day three. And she was fine. She was under the house next door. And so now I had a new career. What was your career before this? I was actually a private investigator. Oh, okay. Yeah, I was interning as a PI. I've always loved animals. My whole goal in life was to put animals and investigations together. Animals and criminal justice together. So do you use a dog in your business? I do. I have two. I do have two dogs. And so what you give them something to smell and then they go after looking for that smell? Yes, I give them a 100% scent article of the animal that's missing. It could be a collar, that the animal has worn, it could be a Halloween costume that they wore a year ago. So I just need something that's a 100% only that animal, and I have two tracking dogs, Gable and Fletcher, and they're absolutely amazing. So were they specially trained to do this? Or did you train them? We were trained together. And now we train on our own once a week. They're amazing dogs, Fletcher and Gable. Do you use any other techniques or methods to besides the dog? Like what? Yeah, dogs, I always tell everybody that the dogs, I don't feel like that's number one to find a lost pet. I feel like awareness is going to be number one. So if, you know, in this world, I a 100% believe if you can gain awareness, you can fix something, you can change things. You can find things you can do anything if you have awareness. So my first, the first thing that we do is we gain awareness. And we do that with signs. But aren't there some towns that don't let you put up signs on their country, it's illegal. Signs are illegal all over the country. Oh wow. I didn't know that. It makes it very difficult, but the way that you work with it is that you put them on private property. So the way that I work by cases is I profile the case and then I tell them where every single sign goes, all they have to do is put the signs up, but they're going to put the signs up according to the closest placement on private property. It can not go on public property if you put them on polls, public property, they'll just get taken down and there's also a chance you can be fined. When did you start your business? How long ago? The end of September 2015. How many cases have you had? About 260. 200. Wow, that's a wow. So you can make a living at this? Oh, a 100%. Totally. How many of those cases were solved? I have closed over, I want to say a 160 of them now. Were there stolen pets that were a part of that count there? About 16 to 17 cases out of the two 60 were stolen. So very, very few, not a big percentage. Wow, I didn't realize that many animals had worst over. I thought that was a lot. Oh, you think, oh, really see, everybody when I talk to people the first thing they say is, you know, my dog was stolen. And usually their dog is not stolen. You know, usually they got out of the backyard or they went missing. You know, when people find them and want to keep them. That's more of a percentage that I have of my cases of people finding animals and wanting to keep them. We are with Jamie Katz, she is a pet detective and just a couple of minutes. We'll find out what you can do to keep your pet from being stolen. Hi, this is dean Cohen from the animal radio. Please stay in new to your pet. Do you have a home that you don't want anymore? Spend your new to your attention. Some of your exes. This is an animal radio news update. And I'm Lori Brooks, the animal kingdom is getting its very own social network, but instead of vacation picks and baby announcements and all the stuff that we usually post. It's going to be filled with data that could help conservationists save species from extinction. This effort is called wild book and it will be built to keep track of wildlife. In fact, they've already built it. And researchers can upload images that are taken from the field. In fact, maybe some of your pictures are already on wild book two, since the inventors of it combed sites like YouTube and Flickr for pictures and videos that people had posted from trips like wheel watching tours, and even safaris. Then, listen up, how cool is this? You can follow the same animals that you saw on your trips. Because what wild book does is spot that exact same animal in different pictures than others submit. How can it do that? How can it do that? Because it's like facial recognition, but it's animal face. Okay. Okay. Pretty cool, huh? In fact, it's powered by artificial intelligence. And the same pattern software that can tell animals apart. It's really much like what they use on Facebook, which has algorithms that compare dimensions and points on the face to determine who's looking at what. So however, it's not all photos taken of wild animals that are so easy to identify or rather so difficult to identify because those that live in the ocean, you know, you see pictures of killer whales and such, but you don't normally see their faces. But that's okay. Because really wild book applies its pattern recognition tool to other body parts, too. Like, yeah, the stripes may be on a zebra or the ridges on a whale's tail that commonly show up in photos. And our features that are distinct enough for computers to tell apart these days. This truly is animal face recognition at its finest. And each animal will get its own profile so you can keep track of sightings made by others too. I just think that is wonderful. You see a camel or a killer whale on a vacation and if you can get onto wild book and post that photo, they'll post it on the appropriate page, and then you can say, hey, I wonder how Acapulco your favorite killer whale is doing while you know. You go and you look it up and it's like, look what he's been doing since we saw him last time. Yeah, in theory, it sounds really great, but does it work? We'll see, right? I think they're getting really great results for it. And what they can do for animal conservation is amazing. Cool. All right, so this headline, maybe you shot. I thought it was a little misleading at the beginning. But this was a viral video not too long ago, and it was still so cute. And I bet even sparked a new dog trick idea for a lot of people. In that video, a police dog in Spain showed off its first responder skills by performing CPR on an officer who was playing dead. Now, here's how it happened. Poncho, the police canine puppy was the star of the video. And the video shows the officer just kind of suddenly dropping falling to the ground and pretending to be unresponsive. So poncho rushes in and he's wearing a harness with a flashing emergency light attached to it. Because he is the rescuer at this point. Of course. He runs over and begins pouncing up and down, repeatedly on the officer's chest. And then every so often he would put his ear down by the officer's neck, you know, to actually he was getting close to the nose. To determine whether he was breathing or not. It was perfect. Poncho continued these heroics until the officer who was on the floor stood up and gave him a treat. It's a great video and those of you that know me, I don't do a lot of Facebook in your video watching, but this is a video that caught my attention is now on our Facebook page at animal radio. If you haven't seen it yet, if you're one of the two or three that haven't seen it yet. It's really cute. And I bet there'll be more dogs doing it since I know a lot of people are always looking for new dog tricks to teach. As part of last month's take your dog to work day, Ollie, which is a human grade dog food company. Polled animal lovers who currently aren't able to take their dog to the office just to see what would they be willing to do in order to gain that privilege. Well, one in four of those polls said they would give up three vacation days if it meant their dog would be allowed to go to the office. 70% of those pet parents in new pet offices said they would show up to work earlier if it meant they could bring their dog in 68% said, hey, I'll stay later if I can bring my dog in. And two thirds of those polled who couldn't bring their pets to work at this time said they would be willing to switch to another company if it meant getting pet friendly perks. Damn straight. We get to bring our pets to work here at animal radio and it's well worth it. Best thing you'll ever do. I quit my last job at Denny's so that I could work here. They wouldn't allow me to bring my cat into Denny's. Can you believe that crap? You want to cook, right? Yeah. Oh, and next hour, we've got some stories on it, bringing your cat into Denny's and that kind of thing. It reminds me of the story that we're going to be doing on emotional support animals and how I rate the airlines are getting over them these days. I'm Lori Brooks. Get more breaking animal.

"And here at animal radio we love us some dogs. We love us some cats and we love us some chickens. Chickens again. Chickens. We are having supermodel summer rain on today. Summer rain oaks. Lori said earlier, is that her real name? Of course it's a real name. It's on her birth certificate. What a crazy question that is. But she is unlike any model that you know. And I hate to stereotype or generalize, but let me tell you this young lady here, you're going to like her doctor Debbie. She loves bugs. Oh. She actually went to Cornell, to study edit, which is oh, I really like her now. I understand it will ask her about this. I understand in her house, she has really kind of an ecosystem where she has to release certain bugs to counteract the beneficial insects. Beneficial insects is what they call them. Which is very strange. But most importantly, she has a chicken, and this chicken is like her favorite pet friend, whatever you want to call it. This chicken is mostly with her all the time. Wherever she goes on the subways, to photo shoots. And apparently it was a foster failure situation with her. She felt like she's quick to point out too that the chicken kippy is not her emotional support animal. Yes. That she is the emotional support human for the chicken. We're gonna find out more about this coming up in just a few minutes with summer rain, oaks right here on animal radio. Also, do your pets dream. Yes, sure. Oh yeah. Of course. You see their little legs kicking and they're twitchy. Twitching in that. What are they dreaming? That's the question. We're going to try to find out with doctor deirdre Barrett. She is an author and a psychologist who teaches it. And she's known for her research on dreams, hypnosis, and imagery. She's written a book on evolutionary psychology. Remind me to ask her if we should wake them up while they're dreaming. You do that, Judy, don't you? You wake your dog up when she's having a bad dream. Yeah. Okay, I'll remind you to ask her that, okay? Thank you. Someone remind me that, remind her. Okay, I'll remind you to remind her I can't remind anybody because I'm gonna forget. Yeah. I already did. We'll also be talking about noise phobias on today's show and those noises that scare your animals and what to do about them. But first, your calls for doctor Debbie or Joey velana, yes, he's here to answer your calls too. You can also ask your questions for the free animal radio app for iPhone Android and BlackBerry. And at the bottom of every hour we do a news check with miss Laurie Brooks, or should I say doctor Laurie Brooks? Because you got to be a doctor or something, right? You're so smart. No, I'm a nurse, actually, but no. You are. Not a doctor. You smarter than some doctors. I am a nurse. A human nurse. Yes, a human nerd. We have to clarify, because we call veterinary nurses do. Do you really, I've often wondered that I heard it in one vet office and I thought, that's interesting. I've never heard that before. It's kind of up and coming. But yeah, some places do it just so people can relate to who the staff member is, that they're looking at. So that they understand nurse. Technician doesn't mean a whole lot to that. Right. Right. Well, coming up, I'm going to tell you about there is a new social media network coming out. But it is only for wildlife. And how humans will be able to participate in that, but still keep it animals only thing. It's a great idea. I'm so intrigued. I'm wondering how this wildlife likes something with their little toes and things. Without that type of thumb, that's kind of difficult. We're going to find out at the bottom of this hour with Lori Brooks. First, your calls. Let's see. Hey Randy. Hey, how you doing? Doing good. Where are you calling from? I'm calling from orange, California. Okay, listening on coast, I assume, how can we help you the whole team is here for you? Okay, well, I was calling, I just have a little anxiety. My dog, she is about four and a half years old. And she is, she pulled up limp a couple of months ago, where she wouldn't use the right leg. I took her to emergency and they did a battery of tests and x-rays and the vet said that she saw displacement in both. Oh, okay. And so then I took her the recurred me to a surgeon, which I took to and they were showing me and I could see the dysplasia in the x-rays. But he showed me these little pieces that he said were in there and said that we should do surgery, but then she pulled up. It's been over two months. So he's only had an incident like once. And it lasted like a day and a half I kept her on bed rest. But it's like she runs in place and nothing happens. And then every once in a while, so it's like, I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing. Sure. Schedule for the 12 for her surgery, but I just don't want to put her through it. It reaches well, she's young enough to do it now and so I'm just confused. Sure, now in what kind of breed wish she again? She is a golden mix. Okay, golden retriever mix. Okay, well. If I could, if I could have made a standard case description of a breed for elbow dysplasia, I would say either a golden retriever or a Labrador retriever. Just meaning I do see it a lot in those breeds, as well as some others, Germans, masks, and even dachshunds on the small side of the crew. Oh, wow. Yeah, so elbow dysplasia is kind of the equivalent of hip dysplasia, but in a different joint. And the most typical time we would notice this if we were fortunate enough to pick it up, is sometimes as young as 6 to 12 months of age. So in some cases, with young dogs that have kind of occasional limping when they're young, it could be sometimes the first hint that we have a problem. But a lot of times it really doesn't manifest at that young age. So we don't know about it until they get a bit older and we start to get the arthritis developing in there. So the trick with elbow dysplasia and what I would advise and I think please stand really most surgeons would advise is that the sooner we can intervene with surgery than the better chance of it being of benefit. And that does depend, I'm not on the ground and looking at your pet and the x-rays and so forth. But that's in general. So I would much rather recommend and follow through it with surgery in a younger than an older pet because once we're older, we typically are going to have a lot more degenerative changes in the elbow. The elbow joint isn't really a joint that we have a lot of room in there. So it's a hinge joint. So when they start to get these what we call osteophytes, which are basically little pieces of bone that start to develop associated with the arthritis, it limits the range of motion of the joint, but it causes pain. So that takes a long time for those things to develop and see on an x-ray. So we would rather catch these cases early, do surgery and we're always going to have some arthritis. We knew that's going to always be the case. But they have better return to function and less arthritis if we intervene when they're younger before we get a lot going on there. You know, her name is nunu. And trust her, which means a little girl in Chinese, but I asked our primary vet and she goes, I go, doctor vanny has got she's only four years old and she's as well as that's a lot of times when it develops,.

"Exactly how often these meds are used truly to care for the pet or how often there's simply being given to the dog for the convenience of pet owners. So anyway, there have been some clinical trials that suggest antidepressants indeed may help dogs suffering from separation anxiety in, compulsive behaviors like tail chasing, but most of these studies have also included behavioral therapies that are part of the treatments for the animals, not just giving them medication alone. So if you're just giving your dog a medication, you might want to Google it and figure out exactly if there's a companion behavioral therapy for it. Some of these therapies are actually pretty simple, like spending more time with a pet, taking them outdoors and using training programs. Now, here's a heads up. Research tells us that dogs who are walked only a few times each week or other pets whose owners spend less time at home. Those pets may be at greater risk for behavioral problems, like excessive barking and destructiveness. And lastly, keep in mind that as with humans, giving psych meds to pets can cause side effects. In fact, they're pretty much the same side effects that they cause in humans. Nausea, weight loss or weight gain and vomiting are pretty common ones. I got to jump in because, first of all, I want to say that don't give your pets any kind of medications that you have. If you don't self treat your pets, make sure you know. I got to admit that I have a cat that is on prozac and has been on prozac for ten years. Ten years? Okay. I've been slowly trying to wean him off though. We've been cutting down. We used to be every day, but now we're down to every third day. Now, that may sound crazy, but before he was on this prozac, he would walk around the perimeters of the house just all uptight, very anxious, and he would pee all over the place. He was just a really very uptight, and has changed. Oh, it's changed. Yeah, you know, out of all the other cats, they would lay down and relax, and he would be pacing around the house. He'd pace the room several times, go to the next room, pay around that room, then pee, and he doesn't exhibit that behavior anymore. No, they really calmed him down and let him finally relax. We never saw that cat sleeping. He was too busy just, you know, going around the house. Being tense. Yeah. Now, you guys, you brought up something very, very important when you talk about tapering them off, the prozac because prozac is an SSRI, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. So there is the syndrome when you come off at too fast, you can literally go into withdrawals. And so I'm glad to hear that you guys were advised to that. I did for a whole year I did it every other day. I went from every day and then the next one year I did every other day. Now this year I'm down to every third day. So I'm doing a yearly. I'm taking my time. Real slow. Real slow. I'm glad you guys have, you know, that we know that it works for a cat now because I've never heard of a cat being on prozac. I've heard lots of dogs being on it, but in humans, now some of those humans who oh jeez, you know, therapy pets. Yeah. We get rather emotional here. There was a great article recently and you pointed it out to me how, and it was fabulous. It was in parade magazine. It comes in the Sunday newspapers. About the therapy dogs. Yes. And I will highly recommend it to anybody who's thinking about getting an emotional support animal because this will tell you everything that you have to do. And in fact, you might, it's pretty eye opening. You will probably just look at it and go, oh my gosh, my dog could never be a therapy dog. That's why. And I don't mean that to discourage anybody, but let me tell you about this. The author mentioned in the very beginning how he saw this cute therapy dog wearing is therapy vest and he asked the owner if he could pet the dog like a lot of people do because, you know, you're not supposed to pet working animals. And the owner told him, look, he's really not a therapy dog. I just put this vest on him so I can take him in the store with me. That doesn't shock you, right? You know, not in this day and age. Yeah. Right, because it happens so much, but now of course, some airlines are requiring documentation that therapy animal really is what the pet parents says, the therapy animal is or is supposed to be. So what does it take to have a legitimately trained therapy? Let's say a dog. They have to be at least one year old at the time of evaluation or only 6 months old if you're trying to get a rabbit at Guinea pig or a rat certified. They have to have lived with you for at least 6 months. I thought this was funny, or if it's a therapy bird, it has to have lived with you for one year. They want to know that you know these animals. They have to be reliably how strained, vaccinated against rabies. And you can't say I got a tighter and he's covered, no, titers are not accepted in lieu of a vaccination. The therapy pet or possible therapy pet can not be fed a diet of raw meat, because they could get salmonella and that could be passed on to humans. They've also got to have a zero history of aggression. They have to demonstrate basic obedience skills. And a dog say walking on a lead should walk on a loose leash and then respond predictably to basic commands, such as you say, sit the dog sits in stays there. This was interesting. They must welcome not just tolerate interacting with strangers. I mean, they have to really enjoy it. I think airlines will be much happier when they see these things. But as the handler, you have to do a lot of things too. You have to be able to cue and redirect that pet without, think about this. You have to be able to tell the dog to sit or come or anything, but you can't raise your voice. You're not allowed to jerk on a leash and you can't offer food or toys, treats nothing. No dog. Yeah, the dog really has to be responsive to you, and the pet partner's business that is now in this business. And they happen for a long time, actually. It's why we talk about them. They register 9 different species for therapy animal work. So if it's not just dogs for you, you're a cat lover. How? Yes. You could definitely. What about my rat? Cat certified. Can I have my rats? They do rats. Okay. Horses, rabbits, Guinea pigs, llamas, and alpacas, birds, and miniature pigs. But that's a lot of work. I mean, well, my service Llama probably wouldn't pass all of those. Can you imagine going to a restaurant and finding a service lawma in there? I did see a show one time that had a therapy Llama. He was really good. In fact, I think they transported him in the back of a van. And he would just lay down, went to hospitals and they loved him. He's different, so if it cheers up patients, those things can spit. Right, but they would have to not. To be a service lawman, it can't spit. So. Good luck with the llamas, guys, anyway. I'm Lori Brooks. Remember that you can check out breaking.

"This is an animal radio news update. And I'm Laurie Brooks, there's another big buyout planned in the world of pet food. General Mills says it has agreed to buy out Blue Buffalo pet products for about 8 billion dollars. General Mills will be paying about 40 bucks a share for Blue Buffalo, which sells dog and cat foods under brands like maybe you've heard blue life protection formula, blue wilderness and blue basics, anyhow the deal has been approved by both companies, boards of directors and such, but it does still need to be approved by government regulators and this deal comes as global food giants of all kinds are out there snapping up makers of natural and organic pet products, which are really outpacing other brands when it comes to growth. Well, now, more and more people with multiple pets are getting together. Dating or moving in together, pet people are attracted to each other. But everyone needs to be aware of how to introduce pets properly. Experts say, just like when your pet first met your new significant other, same thing. Plan to make the meet and greet of each of your pets on neutral territory, which is a whole lot easier to do with dogs, right? Than it is with cats. With dogs, of course, you can easily take them for a walk, but one of the biggest issues that arises when merging pet households is making sure that all the animals get along. So start off on the right foot, make it neutral territory to begin with. Perhaps the biggest challenge is when one pet is moving into another pet's home, try to manage it in that case so that at least for a few weeks, the pet who lived there first gets the majority of the space, and don't move that pet's toys or food bowls or even their bedding until that adjustment period is over. There is no magic number of days or weeks, but just make sure that you know the signs of potential conflict, especially for dogs. Things to look out for with dogs include when they lower their tail or they start licking their lips or turning their head away or even cowering. And if you see a fight brewing between cats, separate them before it gets out of hand. Finally, Malcolm Alexander, he spent nearly four decades in prison for a crime he did not commit. Fortunately though the innocence project worked on Malcolm's case and he got the proof needed to prove his innocence, but only after spending 38 years behind bars. Now, however, when he left prison, mister Malcolm Alexander was not alone. In fact, the day after he was freed, he got to reunite with the dog that he had raised behind bars. The dog was a 9 month old puppy, her name is innocent for he called her in for short. And as a well behaved inmate, mister Alexander was allowed to have innocent with him as a companion animal in prison as part of a special program which allowed the dog to even go to his prison work sites with him. He's just happy to have innocent with him. I'm Lori Brooks. Get more breaking animal news anytime at animal radio dot com. This has been an animal radio news update. Get more at animal radio dot com. Let's talk about dog behavior. Dogs need attention, they need your attention. It doesn't matter if it's positive attention or negative attention. If you're giving your dog attention, he thinks you're rewarding him. The best way to teach your dog how to behave is to only give him affection and attention when he's doing the right thing. The thing that he should be doing, ignoring your dog and taking attention away from him is powerful. Turning and walking away, turning your back on him, totally ignoring him. Let's say you bring your dog in from the street and you want to clean his paws with a towel. You get him to go down, and when you start to clean his paws, he starts moving around and fidgeting and you start getting frustrated. So you start talking to him. Lay still. Well, the more frustrated you get, the more you try to get him to lay there and let you clean his paws, the more he's going to get excited and jump around. So what's the answer? As soon as he starts to get excited, you just stand up quickly and stare off into space. Or walk away into the house and leave him there for a couple minutes. You might have to do it over and over again, but eventually he's going to get the message that if he asks that way, you're not going to pay any attention to him. You're not going to touch him. He'll start to realize that the bad behavior is not working anymore. And when your dog gets the idea that you want him to lay still. Or you want him to just lie down when people come over and ring the doorbell. He's going to do it because your dog wants to please you. And he wants to be with you. It's important to understand that dogs are very sensitive to you. Your body language. What you're doing, where are you looking? How are you carrying yourself? People get into trouble because they want their dogs to be there for them. When they want them there, then they want their dogs to do a disappearing act when they don't want them there. When they're not in the mood. They want to be able to flick the dog on like a light switch. Once you understand how dogs think, how they communicate what their body language means. You can teach them just about anything. How to go to the bathroom outside, how to heal, sit, stay, how to behave when people come over to the house. The key to it all is patience, calm leadership, and total consistency. So that your dog's able to learn the rules. Because dogs need rules. Doing that will make your dot com and fun to be around. And don't forget they need plenty of exercise. Get more tips and animal radio dot com. You're listening to animal radio. We love our pets and we're very concerned about what they ingest, what they eat. And Lori just reported that General Mills bought Blue Buffalo for $8 billion holy moly. There's really only a handful of companies that own all of these brands of food. You know, you go there, you go to the store and you look and you say, wow, how do I make a selection? Here's an amazing selection and variety, but really there's only about three or four major brands and they all source their foods from the same places. You might remember the melamine contamination many years ago. That's when it became really evident. That all of these foods are being sourced from the same place and that it's all about branding for the companies. I want you to think that you're getting some special healthy food. But it's just all the same crap. You know who we have back on the show right now is Jacqueline Bowen. She's the executive director for the clean label project. And she really woke me up to this whole problem a few months ago. When they tested 99 pet foods and found everything from arsenic and heavy metals in the food and of course he's on top of this whole thing that's going on with the pentobarbital in food. Hi, welcome back, Jacqueline. Thank you so much for having me. So for listeners that are just tuning in this week that don't understand how pentobarbital ends up in their food and their cats or dogs food. How does this happen? Well, it's really interesting because right now the FDA still has still not released the results of their investigation. One possible way is through contaminated ingredients. That one thing that we could possibly see is that the ingredients came from a rendered animal facility where essentially animals that had been euthanized were ended up ended up in the protein supply chain and were ultimately used in the creation of these finished products. Okay, so this is a company a big company smuckers, which we know for their jams and jellies. They own how many pet foods do they have? Oh, many, I know at least in terms of part of the recall, I know that both Roy was recalled as well as Skippy as well as, of course, gravy train in kibbles and bits. And that's.

"Do that. Yeah, you know, and I've had people say, you know, I fed my dog, table scraps, their whole life. I've never had a problem. Well, good for you and good for your pet, but this may be the time you do have that problem. So you just have to know what you're doing and know that there is a risk with that. And our pets don't, they thrive on a consistent steady diet when we switch things up and add in things it actually will trigger digestive upset. Did you hear people saying I feed it to them all the time or I give them jerky all the time? Nothing's ever happened. It's like I'm driving a car with a blindfold on. Nothing's ever happened. Well, eventually something is going to happen. And you got to be very careful with that. Or you have the ones I see. I just gave them a little piece. Or the bones, you know, I've had my dog bones, their whole life and never had a problem. So I can tell you, I'm going to be so tired of pets with vomiting and diarrhea. We'll probably have a couple of bone form bodies that are going to be coming along the way. So we see the full gamut of this around the holidays. As vets do everywhere across the country. And no bones are good. I mean, no bones. No. Our safe. No bones are really safe. And there's always that risk that it's going to cause damage to the teeth, really hard, the butcher's bones. A lot of times dogs would chew on those things and crack their teeth. But then there's the shards that'll get caught in the digestive tract or just had last week a dog chewed on a bone and chewed it up really fine and they thought they did a good thing because it chewed it up really well, but boy when those bones passed out or backside, she was an excruciating pain we had to have an IV hydromorphone, which is like morphine, just to get her through a 24 hour period, because she was in so much pain. So it's really bad. So don't be one of the statistics don't show up in doctor Debbie's office on Monday morning. Yeah, a year at the intro those bones away, make sure they're secured in the trash. If you leave it out on the counter, your dog will get it. You know, I walked dogs. I walked dogs in my neighborhood and there was some tall grass. My dog, one of the dogs I walked went into the GRAS because he smelled it, obviously, and came up with a turkey neck bone somebody had thrown in their front yard. It's like, oh, my gosh. I was able to get it away from him, but throw them in the trash. Yeah. That's what I do sometime in the next couple of days. I'm going to write up my signs. And sometimes I actually save them the do not feed the dogs, signs, and I'm pretty militant about it. Nobody's ever crossed me, but I mean, at least they know, you know that you care. Where do you put these? I tape them on every door in the house. Doors going in and outdoors to bedrooms, doors to bathrooms. If there's a door, there's a sign on it. You know why? Because I used to have cats too, so I would say, do not let the cats out. You're rough on those gifts. I don't have a lot of guests in there. Now I know why, right? We are about 20 minutes away from a check with the animal radio newsroom and miss Lori Brooks. What kind of stories are we looking for this hour? I don't know. Doctor Debbie, have you ever had to microchip an emu? We do parrots. We do tortoises and we do pop belly pigs. But not an emu. A state right now that has two different cases, very close together of emus that are lost. And they are amazing, huge birds. What's the latest on these stories? One of the guys has really been a big sensation on social media. Maybe the two emus ran away together. It could be, I mean, there are two males and that happens, but I think it's wrong with that. Why not in birds? Absolutely nothing wrong with that. That's right now. Like a male emu. That's perfectly fine. Okay. Let's go to the phones. Please, save us. Well, hello, Sammy. Hi, how are you? Doing good. How are you doing? I'm all right. Where are you? I love Marilyn Maryland. It's just a beautiful place. I've got doctor Debbie right here. She can help you with whatever ills your pet. Okay. Well, hi. Hi, how are you? I'm doing wonderful. What can we do for you today? Well, I have three cats and I applied frontline to each one about a week ago. And the fleas are worse. Now, I had the front line around for a while because I haven't had to use it in about three years, didn't have any problems with sleeves. Okay. My question is, there's no expiration date that I can find. Does it go bad and can I reapply it? And you know there is no expiration date on frontline. And that is a truth. So as far as as long as the package was intact, I wouldn't have necessarily a problem in using that. Now, a lot of times after we apply frontline or even some of the other types of flea control products, we can see some actual exaggerated activity of fleas. And that's generally more right after we apply it. It kind of affects their immune system. It affects their neurologic systems so they can become really hyperactive and just kind of looking wacky. So a lot of people see a lot of flea activity shortly after we treat with frontline or comparable products. Now, if we have just we're seeing a lot more fleas in general, then we might need to take some other approaches to not just relying on one single product and using more of a integrated approach to flee. So is it more that you're seeing a lot of these in.

"It's animal radio. And it's just a few minutes Robert samurai with 5 things you must know about pet diabetes. Is pet diabetes pretty prevalent? Yeah. You know, especially with obesity being such an increasing problem with dogs and cats. It's to be expected that diabetes is also going to be high because those two things kind of go in hand in hand. Is it treated like humans do they need to get insulin in shots and all of that? Yeah, very similar. There's some differences with cats can be a little bit more similar to people. Sometimes we can manage them with diet. They don't always have to be on insulin, but dogs are insulin dependent, so they do have to have injections twice a day for life long. Just another reason to keep your pets in shape and not open. Absolutely. Lori Brooks were about ten minutes a little less than ten minutes away from visiting the newsroom. What do you have up this hour? You don't have to warn you anything you do on the Internet. You have to be very, very careful. And buying a pet over the Internet is not a good thing. Because you have no way of knowing where that pet came from. You don't know you haven't seen the mom, the dad, what kind of conditions they're raised in, and they can always present you with something that they want you to see or want you to believe. So anyhow, long way around that, but one of the major airlines has just filed a lawsuit against another company, a website that was impersonating the airlines when it came to transporting puppies, and they were also selling puppies, kind of weird, just be careful, and we'll give you the details of this behind the scene and things that you need to watch out for. Yeah, I heard about this, just another pet scam. And especially important if you're planning on traveling or flying with your pet or just sending your pet somewhere. Be listening to that, Lori Brooks has that in just a couple of minutes and we're going back to the phones for your calls. The number is toll free. It doesn't cost you a penny from the free animal radio app for iPhone Android and BlackBerry. Hey Dan, how are you doing? Good, how are you? Good, where are you calling from today? Illinois, headed to Minnesota. What's going on? How can we help you? I'm talking about a macaw that my wife got about.

"Our newest air talent sunday in the newsroom. Right now along with lori brooks coming up just a few minutes. Five reasons birds making credible pets. And i think joey can speak to that very well. Also coming up in just a few minutes the first ever cloned puppy the us right. Not the first puppy They've done it over in europe. And i think asia or something okay. This is the first. us. Laurie what are you working on over there. You know there are some things that we depend on to change our lives and nothing is done that more than the internet but some of these things on the internet of things has really let a lot of lately. And we'll tell you what that is that you might wanna twice about getting. If you're if you have one of those automated houses you definitely coming up and just let first. We visit with america's favorite veterinarian. Of course dr marty becker. How you doing doc. Doing good friend doing good dogs or dogs or Pestered me and a great way today. You know how you sit down and to what them's on one foot trying to get me to rub it with my foot and other ones on the other hand trying to get pet not love our animals and we do some crazy things for animals. One of the things that you wanna do is when you go to the veterinarian. There's so many things that you can do to make it easier. You take the petrified out of what what are you say. Take the pet out of traffic. Check out of petrified as our slogan. And when you really start looking at pets we know what when they're feeling calm. Happy you can think about ways. The are when they get to go for a walk or they get to open up the door. You're sitting down the couch at night. And they're nice and relaxed and just like the two dogs are out my feet. My arms been wanting to have their their bellies rubbed or the next scratched and then we look at the signs of anxiety and fear and stress. You know what happens when they come across an unfamiliar dog on their walk. Or it's first introduction at the dog park or they're gone the guests the best example. You go to the veterinarian and you don't even have to say they know the going to the vat if it's a small dog or cat that you're getting a carrier out or they just got you read and they get in the car and they followed this path and the go up there and there's a lot of things we've learned on creating faire free veterinary visits that that. Wanna tell pet owners about and there's certain things there's certain anxiety and fear triggers that are part of taking a pet to the vet so if you have a a small dog or cat you're gonna use a carrier. Don't get it out the night before or the morning of the procedure. You're guaranteed to have a pet that has incident anxiety that lasts throughout the trip and the visit the ideal thing to do and i practice what i preach here is to have the carrier out all the time. We bought a new carrier. It's more attractive air. What did you see at the airport. You know that we're now they've now they're nice colors. They've got these cool air holes and we call it fun furniture so it's out all the time. It just happens to be their home away from home so they get used to it before they go to the vet so it's not like a symbol of going to the vet or somewhere bad it just like furniture. They see all the time right. Exactly and slots good things happen in there. So you get new toys. You put him in there. You get a tasty kind of new food or treat you give it in there and also if you have small children you let them know listen. That's the place that's off limits. That's their safehouse there where you don't bug them when they're in their house when the little din and then you want to start about a week out if this is a wellness visit. You wanna start a week out with your preparation. So it's going to fall fairmont's in fairmont's you wanna get a recommendation veterinarian of a brand because there's fairmont's that that sound the same look the same. They're not the same. So get a recommendation. Your veterinarian of the fairmont that we know are clinically proven to work. So you start. This magic carpet ride a fair moans. It's literally go from. Had you put in the carrier a towel. And then it goes in your. You have the fairmont's in your car and then going to find it at the clinic. There are some natural chill pills. We call it their nutro-ceuticals they are some are green tea extracts. Some are have things that are from milk as so like when the bitch or the queen nurses puppies or kittens. There's something in the milk that causes into relax and they do that for two reasons. One they don't want them all their klein everybody to death when they're nursing but secondly they want to be able to call them down when predators around so there's some natural products also compression garments like thunder shirts. So if you're gonna do the chill pills you'll start the magic carpet. Fairmont's you start the chill pills a week out and then when it's time to go don't do it with dread do it with either neutral or you're you're happy voice. You're kind of go to the dog park voice and take the vehicle arrived where how hot. It is where you're at right now. It's about ninety five degrees where i'm at today. You don't take a dog from seventy to ninety five. So pre heater pre cool the car to the temperature that they're accustomed to okay and then don't baby talk the pet on the way in so you're going to have this pet hungry. You're gonna withhold food for like the night before like you do for surgery so responsible food awards. Put it behind the back seat on the floor in the very back if you have a little. Suv like us. You want to cover it with the sheet or a small tau to reduce visual stimuli. And the very best thing you can do go on. Itunes download One of the songs throw dogs era. Through a cat's here. This music is actually paste to be at their resting heart rate for dog or cat. And if you do those things bring it in. Hungary start the fairmont's and the chill pills a week out. Don't babytalk at play. The music covered the thing. You're gonna arrive with a pet that's like it's had three glasses of wine and a value. The love going to the vet. Don't want to go to the vet more often. And i gotta tell you that music that you were talking about is also very commun- soothing for humans to you you know what how this is amazing. I practice last thursday and twice. I got you know how you typically go out to the exam room and you walk somebody up to the front counter for them to check out. This never happened before. I walked out and went up to talk to him about a dental supplement. Because most people don't brush your pets. Teas so i used to listen. Here's some enzyme impregnated. Rawhide that i recommend you feed. I turned around in the owner. Wasn't there. I looked looked back and they were trying to drag the dog out of the exam room.
