"Started getting weird. They would try and piece of clothes off as a souvenir. They would try to snip her curls and even her eyelashes. That is they want. Oh my God owner been scary. Eventually Loretta booked all over the country and she really started enjoying it in was finding it a lot easier to be on stage. About her women fans, she said, I tried aiming my show more at the women even though some of them got the wrong idea, one time I was playing this club in Baltimore and this woman comes up to me in says, so you're the woman that's in my husband's life. That's all I hear before I go to bed when I wake up in the morning, Loretta Lynn and I'm GonNa, break, your neck, I sent. Woman, I don't even know your husband. But if you touch me I'm tired of you before I got the chance bound through through out of the club. My. Most of the women liked me though they could see I was. A mother and a wife and a daughter who had feelings just like other women. Sure. I want to mend like me but the women were something special. They'd come around the bus after the show when they'd asked to talk to. They felt I had the answers to their problems because my life was just like there's whom. Yeah. She's a woman's woman. is. First album was number one in nineteen, hundred, sixty, three, and in nineteen, sixty four. She was named top female vocalist. She was at the Grand Ole opry for seventeen straight shows, which was a record for anyone who wasn't a member, and then finally they asked you to join. Yeah. That'll do it. Yeah. So Loretta, Kitty Wells sing songs from the woman's perspective because country music from the men's perspective was all truck driving easy women and cheating. She remembered how Kitty Sang the woman's side of the story and wanted to hear songs more like that, and she says, you know it certainly helped that kitty wells and patsy Kline can before her and they kind of like led the charge Loretta. Also just talking about music that she really liked. She really loves Ray Charles. She said that country music owes a locked to him preparing fans, Johnny cash and Merle, Haggard Charley Pride. The first black country star is one of his all time favorites as well, and so she says that she's his biggest fan. So the song don't come home and drink in the one we mentioned earlier got to be number one. In the nation was also the first album ever made by a woman singer that a million dollars. She says, she didn't want any outside influences changing her music, and so she really didn't listen to Joni Mitchell or Bob Dylan, or the Beatles, she kind of stayed in her own little bubble. One of her personal highlights is when Ernest Tubb chose her to sing with him on an album of duets and so when she's with him, she feels like that little girl huddled on the floor in front of the Pico Radio on Saturday night. Now, before she knew it, they were making more money than they'd ever dreamed of she went from twenty five dollars a show to fifty to a hundred and above. She still did her own canning and put food away from the winter. She said, you never know when the show business is to go for fluey. He says, once you've been poor, you always feel in the back of your mind, you're going to be poor again. Started paying off, do gave up his job as mechanic to take more interest in the business, and they found a forty five Acre ranch and rented a little house in Madison, Tennessee. In late nineteen, sixty three already discovered that she was. A pregnant again. Loretto. He. Yeah. With wins by the way. With, Loretta, was worried that her career would be interrupted. You know things moved on, she named them, Patsy and Peggy. She said that they were a godsend. It was like a whole second life for her and do happened because they had them when they had the money and time to devote to them. She was on the road a lot and they were adult the. Loretta and new little were adults at this time to call. Yes. Yeah. So they got to spend more time with them. They were identical twins and Loretta. Couldn't always tell them apart especially when she just come home up the road. She. Begged Hey, twin and they don't call. Me By my name. So, reticence that they were never really part of Nashville social scene and that forty five acres ended up not being enough for them, and they kind of got lost once on a drive and found a beautiful one, thousand, four, hundred, and fifty Acre property with an old house built on a hill or the whole town, and it had like white columns in the front. It was in such bad shape though that when Loretta was on the road, do actually thought, he'd set the whole thing on fire. He had tears in his eyes because it was probably best to just rebuild, but he knew how much Loretto loved the House. So he fixed it up for them. So threaded. Didn't know this again because she. was educated in some ways and not in some ways, but she didn't know that it had originally been a plantation house, and if you look at pictures of it, you see it immediately with the white columns, the way that it's built. She talked about seances that they've had there because it was a salute. There was a civil war battle fought there on the grounds that they're actually enslaved people buried in the property and when she found that out, it made her really sad. since they ended up buying. So much of the land, it's kind of like the ended up buying the whole town. So do fix stop picks it up into a real working ranch and it's worth a lot. Now, you can see it and take a tour. You can go and Youtube, people have taken tourism it and made whole videos of it so just. Just you know search hurricane mills and it definitely has graceland vibes. Cool. I'll look it up. That's where the recreation of the butcher Holler home is as well, and it says, you know it portrays the legacy of the rags to riches, coal miner's daughter Yeah. I just looked it up, and like you said, yeah, you can really tell it's beautiful but Yeah you can tell her. Old Plantation Home in the House Loretta explains on the wall going up the winding stairway. We've got all forty five of my albums framed in the order that I did them. This is nineteen seventy five that wrote this and there's forty five then more now, there's some one I didn't use any makeup before. Do finally. Let me. You can see me changing album after album. It's really kind of weird to see I've got all kinds of souvenirs around the house. A bed Hank Williams zoned the cowboy hat tex ritter used to wear my second rhythm guitar, some personal.

"All right. I gotta say I'm just I, love the titles of her songs. I know I told my younger brother that we were going to be doing episode on the red. Olin he was like I, love her, and I'm like we do and he's like, yeah, and my younger brothers grade. He always surprises me and he was telling me like, do you remember what episode of the Simpsons with Lorraine Lump Lumpkin and I was like, yeah, he's like I'm pretty sure that character was based off Loretta Lynn like, Oh, that makes sense. Did you watch a lot links? You know who talking about. Absolutely. Yeah, do. Her manager. stage. But I do. That's that's right. I love it. Yeah, she was very clever with her lyrics. Yeah and I think. Yeah. So it makes sense at Loretto. Lumpkin was based on Ritalin. Yeah. In little way, anyways do never had to worry about Loretta cheating on him. You know when this book was written after Twenty Five Years of Marriage Loretta had said that she hadn't ever cheated on him. She said, she'd met a few men who she could have liked. But none enough who could ever take the place of her family. So she stayed out of trouble. She's had met all. Oh, her around all over the city that they live in call. Call her hotel. Ask if they can come up, but she never went for it. Now at doesn't mean that Loretta hasn't been accused over the years not do. But by people she been really with other country musicians as specially those, she'd write songs with and she'd sing songs with, but Loretta never did, and she said that if she did sleep with someone else, it wouldn't have been to get anywhere in the business. anyways. It would have been for her own accord. Yeah. That's a good reason. Asleep was somebody I? Think. So Loretta is first appearance at the grand. Ole opry was October Fifteenth Nineteen Sixty. Now, how did she get the GIG? Well, she got it for herself. She went to the manager and she said that she pestered him and he let her on the show, and so she sang Song Honky tonk girl and was invited back and I believe this is where Ernest Tubb makes his appearance in the movie is when Loretta is invited up on stage, the character that sang before her was Ernest Tubb but sense him in the movie so. Yes call true to his word. Mr. Burleigh. Let Loretta. Her contract. When she moved onto something a bit bigger. She made Song of songs with. Decca. Records who already had pasta, Klein and Brenda Lee assigned artists. She was both polishing her act. But staying true to herself, she was encouraged to pronounce the words the way that she wanted to, and they never made her feel stupid for talking as she calls it like A. A hillbilly. One of the guys said, people will always understand me because I was always myself. That's of her band members. She could only afford to bring her brother, Jay Lee because she couldn't pay the rest of the guys to move away from home and pay their salaries, and that's when I'll his family settled in Nashville nineteen. One. Loretta started getting regular performing dates and was invited back to the opry every week. She says that there were many other girl singers trying to make it big them, and they were jealous that Loretta was getting so many gigs and attention. So quickly Loretta says that if it weren't for Patsy cline, she might have given up let patsy and when Patsy was only twenty seven Patsy had known hard times about what it was like to try to make it. They became fast friends. If Passi had a fight with her husband, she called the Reta. If learn how to fight would do little. She called Patsy. So this again, quite a very interesting friendship and the red even wrote a book about their friendship now, I also noticed. On My wishlist of episode to do Patsy has a whole book. Right? So we could even do a whole episode on her one day. Perfect. Yeah. Yeah. We'll get into her briefly since patchy had made appearances, with Loretta, and an event with a bunch of other country singers. The stamp of approval meet everyone except Loretta Wants Patsy. said there it was cool. Everyone was like, all right. I guess she school. Patsy thought, Loretta. She taught Loretta about show business. She bought her clothes. She gave her rhinestones, curtains, drapes drapes for her home because Greta was still too broke to afford any of these things herself and. Payment to go on the road to keep her company. The last time Loretta saw. Pazzi. Pazzi, was hanging drapes at House and had brought her a huge box close. On March Sixth Nineteen, sixty, three patsy was in a plane crash with a few others, and there were no survivors. Loretta said that Patsy was like a mother and a sister to her and when Loretta would have twins awhile later she named one of them after patsy. Oh. My goodness. I love this friendship. Yeah. It's a shame that it ended so. In that. So young when her life ended. Do Little stayed home with the children a lot. It was a hard subject for Loretta because her career paid off in money and other things. But she missed out on a lot of her children's upbringing. Once he joined Loretta, more children were left with their uncle and grandmothers in Indiana because both of the grandmothers had been living in Indiana. Indiana at that time when they moved to Nashville they had babysitters. Loretta oldest daughter had children pretty young as well, and so Loretta was grandmother. By Twenty, nine do and Loretta taught their children to work hard, and since they were young still when they did get money, they tried not to spoil their children. They still made them wear hand-me-down, the kids never went to imagine. Being a grandmother. Right now. No. No. It's just the most wild thing that I can think of being a mother right now. It's just. Too much for me. I'm St One. Twenty, nine goodness. Loretta, goes into detail about the personalities of each of her children. But since this episode is already like seven hours long you can read the carrier. Loretta says that she could do it all over again. She would still go into show business. She would have been with her children more in one, thousand, nine, hundred, sixty, two, Loretta went on tour working, forty two shows in twenty five days. She was on television shows seen throughout the south and appeared before bigger crowds that she'd ever seen before. Rutta jokingly calls herself a heifer her because she was so clumsy, she has these stories about falling over on stage Bra, straps breaking pantyhose, falling down to her ankles, and you know learning that it was important to smile as she walked onstage, even if she was feeling sick or missing her kids. In nineteen sixty. Three Loretta played the Hollywood bowl with Johnny cash. She went from playing for three hundred people to thousands. Wow. Yeah. The the fans.

"More things at the time when Loretta was raising these children, her entertainment was staying home in singing along with the radio. Do would be out with the boys having a few years, and she would sit home and she'd sing so like a school training exactly exactly and so Loretta had not yet begun her singing career yet. And how it's just around this time. After having her four children and practicing singing at home, you know, do do little had given her a guitar for her fourteenth birthday, and so she'd been practicing more one day. DOOLITTLE said you know you're actually a really good singer. And then that is what Sparks Loretta is next sixty years into her music career, and that's where we're going to stop with part. One of Loretta Lynn Oh my God. That was so good, and I'm so glad you split it up because that was a lot to take in and so interesting in itself, and I can't wait to hear about her career in how that affected everything and this was great. My Goodness Loretta would've story. I know right so that I thought that her upbringing was so fascinating and I thought that all of those little details, and knowing all of that stuff about her was going to be really important to really understand how amazing her success was as a country music musician as a woman in music, and all of these things, so we'll finish their for today. You know our next episode that airs on regular time will be partout all about Lynn's singing career amazing. Thank you so much aunty. She told him that's George. We're GONNA have us a hardback book. doggone right? It's going to be a good book. Anything I go at I. Go at it hard because I only do what I want. It's going to be the best book about country music because I don't take no seconds OF HER ATTITUDE! Oh wait till you just. She's incredibly so this book called Coal Miner's daughter is also the name of her biggest song till Loretta, but you're holler where she grew up is the most important part of her life. She said the butcher. Holler may be the most backwards part of the country. She's ever seen and she's seen the whole country. She says that she's the most backward person you ever saw. She says I never knew where babies came from until it happened to me, so she's got a great sense of humor. "Even know even if you did a movie now about the nineteen forties and fifties I don't know if they'd really got that, they'd be able to get that kind of thing again. It was just awesome but I'll make the comparison between the Book and the movie as we get. Get into a little bit more The book was released in two thousand ten, and then the Loretta gave a little bit of a little extra at the beginning, talking about some things that she had done since the book came out nineteen seventy five, so one thing to keep in mind if I say maybe some like statistics about her that I learned from the book, keep in mind that if she got more awards after that this book came out nineteen, Seventy Five, and then I'll give you a rundown of what happened after the book. Up until now in her career, but if things are like, oh no, she got more than that or she actually one more. It's just because I'm taking at the time. And that makes sense perfect. Yeah! Alright, so we're GONNA. Talk about we're going to begin by talking about Loretta 's early life and one thing that people might not know about her. That's pretty interesting to just say. Right off. The Bat is that her musical career came much later on in her lifetime, compared to many other musicians that we've talked about in the past and so there's a lot of episode here. That is just her life. Before becoming the Country Music, Star Loretta Lynn. Perfect can't wait good, so we're going to go to go back to Loretta Web. That's her maiden name growing up in butcher. Holler now. One thing that I thought was interesting, so butcher Holler was in the mountains of Kentucky, and she'd discussed the connection between Irish music and country music when I was listening to the country music lately even on these new radio stations they do mention a lot. Kentucky is in a lot of their songs. interesting so I think if you would've asked me before like where country music originate like I probably would have been like I. Don't know if you somewhere in the south, but I mean being Canadian, as well I think that learning these things we've kind of have to had gotten a little bit of somewhat of an education geographically where music has come from I. Don't know absolutely anyways. mother sang a lot as did. Loretta 's Mother's twin sister and it was his mother who taught her how to sing. Singing was a family thing and Laura's sister crystal sings on her own tours and her sister. Peggy sue does harmony with her, but Loretta was one of the oldest ones of of her siblings, so they came a little bit after her, so Loretta was raised with seven other children and was. The oldest yet. Why Ash. And since you know, she was close to the oldest, she was really had a responsibility in taking care of the children as well. Like team effort, right. She's like village. It certainly takes a village in this village was called. Butcher Holler Yeah. She was happy to be surrounded by family and at the time that she wrote the book in a she had kids and grandkids, and she said that her house was like grand. Central Station. After many years of touring and everything you know. Thought. It was important that The readers know before getting into the book that she's her own cook. She does her own gardening. She plans her own vegetables and she pickles those vegetables. Living you know eventually kind of settling in on this ranch in Hurricane Mills Tennessee. There's actually a museum there, and you can go online to Kentucky. That was the best part of my life learning how to survive. She said that, even though she's got a million dollars in the bank, she could survive being poor again. So Luck I checked Loretta Lynn's network. And is a little bit more than one million dollars. As most sixty five million dollars. Oh my goodness. Wow, yeah, so here are some other facts about Loretta. She was married when she wasn't even quite fourteen years old why? Yes she had. We'll get into that in more detail. She had four babies by the time she was eighteen, and she was a grandmother at twenty nine Oh my goodness so her husband pretty much said like I raised you the way I wanted you to be. And she went from her father to her husband at age thirteen and so basically yeah, she was raised by her husband. My. God, Wow. She put out a song nine hundred and seventy-five called the pill. something. She did not have in her day and if they did, she said. I'd have been swallowing them like popcorn. We are very lucky to have a the pill. So no surprise, the man who ran the radio station. It's the at the time banned from being played. Wow, but we've got some story to get to before their. When Loretta eventually got to Nashville. This is just a little bit about country music. People called her and people who kind of saying the same kind of music. She did hillbilly singers, and hardly gave country music respect, and so she seen country music. Go uptown and she's proud that she was there when it happened In terms of writing, the spunk shows. It wasn't like writing a song when she had an idea for a song, she scribbles it down on anything that's handy and then sings until the words. Give her a song. She says. People say I can't read or write because I've only got about a fourth grade education. But I can read and write. Some I'm not pretending I know how to write a book, not even a book about me. And of course there's the other dolls that were a part of which is Miss Pamelas Group of women, and how many of us are, there must be like over hundred at this point. We're all over spread all over the world. Yeah and yeah, it's just this ever-growing connection of incredible women and women who love music and women who participate in one way or another and Yeah, just a beautiful groupie dog community. Awesome. That's a great way to explain it and Miss Pamela debar. Who who we were talking about has recently interviewed Alice Cooper so. When you do and you could be so kind to leave us a nice review. We would really appreciate it. Without further is a hassle firm. Do Oh, yes, let's talk about the farm so I have been living out in the country for about two weeks now, and it's amazing. It is restful. It is wonderful being out in nature, and the cats are really happy. There's lots of things being built here. There's always something. Something to do I just hung some fresh laundry up on the line today. Just live in that country dream. Yeah pretty much were currently fixing up a nineteen seventy-two airstream land yacht trailer, so were hanging out a summer out there I'm in a house in the house recording right now, but when I'm not working inside outside. Just yeah, fixing up trailer, things or reading or having a fire things like that and we don't have any running water out in the trailer so when I have to do dishes I well water, and I said outside, and I do my dishes, so you know I'm Kinda, sitting pretty close to the ground, and it just feels really. Feels great feels pretty basics I guess. Yeah, we were talking on our last Patriot on about how you have family that are kind of country folk and you always spent summers there, and this sounds very much like a pullback to your childhood and visiting them and I. Know How much that meant to you, so it's great to see you enjoying yourself out there and enjoying the sun, and just fixing up that trailer. It looks really great so far oh. Thank you. Yep! I definitely have a soft spot in my heart for living out in the country and this kind of inspired this episode I wanted to take the opportunity. Opportunity to get to know a little bit of country music, a little bit more I wanted the opportunity to listen to some really good country music. It's funny because we'll alternate bid to clean the Oldies, and then some new country and the same kind of ten new country songs play on the radio. We kind of know them off by hard at this point, but yeah, there's something really special about that pretty raw stuff that you're going to hear a lot of in this episode. So this episode is about the one and only. Loretta Lynn. I've been really looking forward to hearing about her. Because I honestly don't know that much. Much I do remember watching the movie like many many moons ago and I can't really fully remember it I remember it being worthwhile, though but I feel like this is like the perfect time for you to be doing Loretta, and it makes perfect sense that this kind of came together at this moment and yeah. I'm pumped. Will good I think as I do the episode? You'll probably remember the movie, So the movie was based on the book and this book is is what this episode was taken from, and the book is called coal. Miner's daughter. The book came out in Nineteen, seventy, five, which I was surprised because it was. Was the book is sold out on a lot of the you know. The Indigo Amazon's wherever you can find your books so I. got it. I got the e version, and then I watched the movie after I finished the Brooklyn the episode and that movie came out in Nineteen Eighty starring Sissy Space AC and Loretta. Lynn handpicked Sissy to play her sec- followed runaround around for a year. Her Tommy Lee Jones plays Laura's 's husband. Do the movie holds up I really like movies from the eighties as well. That was all you know. I tend to really enjoy movies to before all of the green screens and CGI annoying. I tend to like the pace of those movies a little bit better, so t, Jane I watched together, and he's a pretty harsh critic, but he really liked the movie as well. Yeah, I mean back then. You really had to rely on story a lot more. It's not like Oh. Look at this thing exploding in the background. Right like it was the story that brings you in, so it makes that makes perfect sense and I agree with you. Yeah there's a scene in the movie where the really? Kinda old fashioned classic train comes towards them. They're standing there. Standing at the train station in the you know. The coal train come comes up, and the steam is coming up and it was just so cool to see that like you never see that I don't.

"Hello and welcome to fight podcasting the show in which. Discuss their craft I'm your host Sky Pillsbury. This is a post show episode in which two very special guests will talk to me about last week's episode in which I interviewed Dolly Pardons America producer. Mo only if you haven't heard that episode, I recommend going back and listening to it before you listen to this one that way, our conversation may make a little bit more sense. Today on the show I have with me, the two people most likely to remember my obsession with Dolly Parton. My wonderful parents welcome to the show, mom and Dad Hey. Hi there. Thank you so much for saying yes. Welcome On this kind of show you guys get to ask me questions. I have the first question here ready to go all right dad. Right. Do you feel a part of dollars America? That is a really good question Yes, I think am I mean I must be one hundred percent because I'm a fan, so I think by default that makes me part of her America, because you know I know who she is. I adore her like so many others. Of course that begs the question like what is Dolly, Parton America, and I think one of the points that she made in last week's episode was that Dolly is sort of this prison for everyone else's story? And I'm not sure that I have a particular story to tell but I think that the aura surrounding Dolly is sort of like. Everyone can be part of it. No matter what walk of life you come from and so I guess in that regard. Be Part of Dolly Parton America. She talked about the feelings of otherness enduring during her show. Do you resonate with that at all? I probably don't if I'm being really honest and. That's because I am very privileged in my life, so you know I am female. I'm white. I've had opportunities that many many people don't get to have. I went to college. I got a good job after college. I sort of did the things that I expected I would do. Thus far in my life. But I think that the way that I can relate with that was what Shima said about how she and Chad are both first generation Americans and you are a first generation American, Dad. And so you know what it made me think, and even in the show, because during the show Jad talks about how her dollies Tennessee Mountain home, reminds his father of his home. Overseas, you know of course I couldn't help but think about our family home in northern Finland, so of course I thought about like the listener. Any listener to this doesn't know is that I grew up going to Finland with you every summer and you know spending many many many many days. Not Whole Lot to do kind of like the countryside of Finland in this tiny town with a population of eight hundred people, where almost no one spoke English, and then of course I would spend a lot of time in Helsinki as well where people did, but you know I remember the excitement that I had the day that you got your citizenship when we were living in Hawaii. I remember you wore a suit and that was a big deal because you were is most of the time. So. You know I remember that feeling, but I don't ever feel I can't say that I ever felt other, but I. Think I knew that you at times felt authored. What about you? Well I guess what I was wondering about is. Dolly is also a what I would call a country girl. you got to know people who were definitely from the country, not from the city. That's true. Maybe I speculate that that may have had something to do with your level of comfort with Dali. Oh. That's interesting. Also expressed some interest in Loretta Lynn during that time. I loved Laura Adeline and I think I I remember i. read the Book About Her. Was the book called? Coal, miner's daughter, I don't know. I did identify with those two, but I don't know I can't like point to a memory where I connected those two things myself. You Know My love for them like I. Really Loved Donna Summer at the same time. She's not from the country and I think honestly I think. They spoke to my infatuation with Glamour, and even though I knew that they were from the country. It's sort of like they were like these unimaginable. Creatures all three of those women. They were like such a shiny thing, and then I love the music and I love to dance, but I think that I always had an interest in people who are different than me, and that's why like when we were in the countryside in Finland like I could hang out with Vinnie me. Who is the violin player? You know for hours or make friends with the girl who lived across the street Rita, even though we. We didn't speak the same language, and like really enjoy those people because it was like exposing me to this completely different way of life. You know just a way of life that I wasn't familiar with and I think that in a way Dali Donna. It sort of showed me a completely different slice of
