Chicago Sees Uptick in Shootings

"Seen a rash of police shootings of police officers in the last couple of weeks. We see the numbers. Now that homicides in general are up. This year over last year and last year was terrible year. Do police officials have any explanation for the surge. You know They they really don't but there's a great deal of concern that that police officers and some cases are being targeted weeks ago Did wine at a police district where an officer agrees one to his his lip. He was just outside when that happened. There was a large police response. Luckily he was okay. The next day an officer who was off duty was involved in. What was a carjacking. And that was a really a tough situation. Where we're officers responded. I and the more than ten years. That i've worked at nbc Chicago and covered shootings throughout the city. this is the worst. I've seen it with police officers to have you know to back to back then in in less than two weeks the numbers that we've had You know there's just a lot of concern about You know Our police officers being targeted. Are we dealing with these gun. Laws Enough the guns on the street and then You know you have these parties where you end up having mass shootings and you know something has to be addressed and you know. Throw more police at it. You know you don't know and that's sort of what the issue is right now and i think they're just trying to figure it

Vaccine withheld from hospital that gave Trump Tower shots

"Have to move on to this bombshell story. That blocked club first reported this week. Loretto hospital in austin before we get into all the impropriety here today. They said that they are reprimanding their coo and their ceo for these improper. Vaccinations kelly bauer. Do we know what reprimand means. In this case. I have to to politicians who are on the hospital's board of directors. And all they would say at the time was that we put out this statement. We're not going to elaborate on rep. What it means to reprimand so we are still trying to figure that out and see what could be happening to the ceo coo. Okay so the first story that you published here was that they the coo. Dr notion med has an apartment in trump tower about two and a half million dollar apartment and the hospital. That has these vaccinations for folks on the west side. Improperly administered vaccinations to trump tower employees. Is there any evidence of some sort of trade-off or exchange or how how this came to be well. We spoke to leto hospital and their ceo. George miller says that it was actually him who helped set up this event but what we found is that right or workers at trump tower told residents that it was loretto hospital that reached out to them now. Loretto hospital is saying that its workers who reached out to them. So it's very much a. He said she said situation. But the city's department said they are looking into it and investigating why these ineligible workers were able to get shots. Before other people and also ineligible were cook. County judges and guest preach judge that also got vaccinated. And there's some different answers onto how that happened. Even though those were not allowed in the current phase as well amanda vindicated. You look at the board of this hospital. As kelly mentioned there's to state lawmakers that sit on the board There's a state lawmaker. Camille lilly that works for the hospital. This is a hospital that gets tens of millions of dollars in reimbursements from the state's medicaid program. Is there a conflict of interest. Here that there can be this much clout on a hospital board. I mean those are certainly questions that were all asking. What sort of favors might members of the war getting terms of the vaccines employment whatnot. We're we're not saying that there is merely that these are the questions to ask in. This gets to something that we've talked about a lot as there's been a lot of corruption of course in springfield and that is that there are really lax economic interests statements conflict of interest rules in then again to place. Where have devil's advocate there. There are those who say it. Is it positive when you have. For example he state legislator employed by hospital because that brings along a expertise. This is a citizen legislature. It is technically a part time job and the reason for that being was because you want to bring in farmers dentists doctors people with all different sorts of knowledge so there are certainly two sides to that point but given kelly's reporting the trump tower. I think that's what it is. It's just it's it's the who got it because these are. There's a lot to look into here and kelly bars. You mentioned that the city's health department is investigating. They've halted vaccinations to that hospital. What do you anticipate. They're going to uncover in their probe. Well we've heard from multiple sources and people questioning why workers at trump tower who are able to get vaccinated and not other hotel workers now. We've also seen that. The ceo's church was able to get vaccinated. This doctor arwady. The head of the city's health department said today that they are investigating they will not be sending doses to loretto hospital until they are confident. Those doses are going to be appropriately.

Chicago's Loretto Hospital Board Takes Actions of Reprimand After Vaccine Controversy

"In Chicago is now barred from giving first covert vaccinations for at least a week after a new controversy over who's been allowed to get the shots. "Mentioned in the same breath. But here they are receiving millions of dollars from the Paycheck protection program. They're both on the list that was released and caused a lot of news. Yesterday was released by the small Business Administration. So just looking through some of these Chicago centric businesses that receive this money and let me be clear. Nothing illegal about this. My family has a personal connection to this is well elaborate. A couple seconds overrides dairy And nobody knows exactly how much these guys received. But they're in certain categories. We know that over rice dairy owned by the state senator, the Republican eyes listed as receiving between five and 10 million A lot of law firms listed here, including the ones who have worked for Rahm Emanuel previously and although Mike Madigan's law firm is listed, a spokeswoman told playbook. The Illinois playbook that he would drew his loan request so that no PPP funds were received, so his hands are clean. Sterling Bay, the Chicago developer for Lincoln Yards, they received a nice chunk. Her coach, E hair salon, Willowcreek megachurch. They receive their money and again. This is a totally legal churches are businesses, too. We talked about this when the PPP program was initiated and remember that Donald Trump and they force that right through the pipeline quick. Munition said. Hey, 48 hours from now we're going to get the portal open. So get your paperwork done. 2,000,005 million for after school matters. Loretto Hospital Chicago Theater Group That's the Goodman Museum of Science and Industry, Navy Pier. Shedd Aquarium, Joffrey Ballet Morn Arboretum Museum of Contemporary Art. 1 to 2 million for the Special Olympics, Chicago Council on Global Affairs, The Chicago Historical Society Shakespeare Theatre, Stepping Wolf Adler Planetarium. And on and on. It goes Rose Bud. So whole House Mike Ditka's bona beef the Italy, uh City Winery. Frontera Grill, Greek Islands Allies cheesecake. Berghof Hawthorne Race Course on and on. It goes now And now we welcome our guest. He is a reporter for Roll Call Chris Cha fee is here. Amusing side Note. Chris. Welcome to W. El, sir. Appreciate your time late on a Tuesday afternoon. Come Grover Norquist, Americans for Tax Reform. And growth has been around since the Reagan Revolution. I like Grover, I respect what he does. But how does he reconcile taking money his portion of PPP when he's the same guy that wanted to one of the drowned big government spending in the tub, Can you? Can you reconcile how he's okay with taking the PPP? Well? Remember, Norquist is, as you know, has been a long time tax crusader. Who's President of Americans for tax reform. That which which urges politicians to sign a pledge opposing any and all attacks increases. Now the loan itself didn't go to a tiara went to a group called the Americans for Tax Reform Foundation. Which also lists Norquist as its president. Now. The group didn't respond to requests for comment or request for specific lone figures. But in the publicly released data from the small Business Administration about the patient protection Program loans. It appears the foundation received alone between about 150,000 and 350,000. And just to be clear a lot of businesses, including my wife's business received PPP loan, not a big one. The average I guess nationally is about $107,000 it's meant to cover you 75% that has to go to your employees to keep them. Employed and 25% you could use for rent. So I'm not really begrudging Grover Norquist er any of these organizations you wrote about for making useless government program, But I do find it somewhat humorous and somewhat ironic. That these these outfits that bemoan biggovernment wasteful spending have their hands out to the conflict. I think for some, yes, it would be that there are groups that have been critical of what they seem to be. Wasteful government spending and applied for loans through this government program. So besides Grover's organization, who else do we have listed here that are generally people that hate tax dollars going to private businesses? Some of the other groups that we did find I can kind of give you some of that other information. Taxpayers for common tent. Citizens against government waste and American Your Tax Reform Foundation. They all received loans between $500,000 according Teo, the small business association. The's centre for economic and Policy Research and the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy received between $350,001 million. Chris Thanks a lot for the elaboration. It's a terrific piece, and we'll tweet it out. I'm sure a little bit later on for our listeners. Thank you, sir. Thank you, Mr President. We're sending direct payments to millions of American workers. More than 80 million Americans have already received their payment. $3400 for a typical family of 4 $3400. That's great. And you deserve it. And that was back in March. Let's see chambered forward March April was actually from April but that we talked about that previously how munitions stood up there and said, This is going to be done in 48 to 72 hours. So not surprisingly, there has been a little bit of waste and even a little bit of fraud in this, but Remember, we were taking on big time water in those days and we had to do something. All right, coming up next. A couple things will Conda welcomes back Jake and Elwood Long overdue. Want to get into that? A server test positive for Corona virus. We have an update on that story. And though some of the numbers from today and John Dempsey I just learned minutes ago, and I don't think you know this, okay? There is a staff member here in Double D. S who works on this program, who regularly breaks 90 and Khun Drive the ball 270 yards. That's not you, and it's not me. Is it, Bret? It is, Mr Brett. Go, go. That doesn't surprise me because he looks like a very athletic guy. And when I've talked to him about golf before he's been very humble, and I does not surprise me that bread is a great golfer. I was just talking to him over the intercom over the during the last Commercial stop, and I said I have to get out tomorrow morning. By the way, you're not going to join me tomorrow morning, are you? I can't tomorrow. Maybe I'll join you Friday. Okay? Well, I hope so. Bring your wallet because today and I should elaborate on this, perhaps later. In our obligatory golf segment. But today I figured out how to Ah, to Ah, actually. Actually, how to. Ah, tee up the ball. No, I'm still working on that. Okay. What is it when you go? I'm sorry. I'm blanking out right to left, Not a sliced. I know how to slice right toe left is that's a that's a draw. Today. I learned how to draw and by God, I'm going to show you on Friday morning. Wait. Yeah, right. We'll tell you more may be coming up here in a couple minutes on Double D. L.

"The note about the show that we just finishes we worked our way into the Wintrust business lunch we mentioned that the salvation army and goodwill are not picking up items you can't drop them off at the salvation army store nor can you buy stuff for the salvation army store those businesses if you will are closed and we wondered if they were going to start opening up but the salvation army tells us at least and perhaps the goodwill stores in the same way the salvation army is like other nonessential businesses awaiting the governor's opening them up so if as you clean out your businesses or homes in your gathering more stuff you love to donate it you don't have any place to drop it right now and you won't know until the governor opens things back up they're not an essential business you can't drop things off in or pick it up yet we're all just in a holding pattern on that may be the first to June and that's that's the optimistic number right now let's see how optimistic John to Jerry and this he joins us Tuesdays at this time the founder of market rebellion dot com the financial news in education and subscription service John welcome back and how optimistic are you today I see the markets are up a yeah are not to be a little optimistic today a lot of very positive signs John but as much as we feel for those farmers to you just mention and all of those folks that are Bob out of work right now there are some positive signs that things are coming back one of those positive signs believe it or not it was crude oil which had just been walloped and the reason none of us want to pay more for gas believe me I'm I'm right there with everybody else on that but the idea of that economies shutting down has really heard these guys much like China closing off to those hog farmers you're just talking about when you have crude oil making this kind of a move another twenty one percent upside moves it's doing that because there isn't that same pressure that there was two weeks ago when the may contract was expiring and everybody was panicked about willing out to June and July and so forth and instead there's a little optimism about perhaps some demand returning not back to normal but some demand returning which would mean that a lot of that storage that's out there floating or above ground or underground storage all of that would start being tapped a little bit what should be a good sign about economies coming back online that demand would just be all of us driving a little bit more going to maybe barber shops or wherever we can go now right and in fact there's really CleverTap but I'm in the alternative data in a pretty big way we use it to basically value many of the companies that we track and one of the alternative data sources that I've never had access to before is apple and Google mobile mobility they've not published it before but now they are and if you go if you Google apple mobility for instance you can go in there and see city by city state by state what the driving and walking patterns are they don't drill right down to you or me John but as a broad swath they can tell you in Chicago that we are fifty points higher than we were during the hard lockdown in other words people are getting out and they know that by where your cell phone if your cell phone is moving around in a car for instance and they know that by the speed they publish that data now on a daily basis apple mobility does same thing with Google and they're not gonna do it forever but right now any anybody can go on that website and see city by city anywhere in the world what the movements are and that's a positive sign not not that people aren't paying attention to what the governor says I'm not encouraging that I'm just saying when you're in a car of course rather than just hunker down at home yeah it's a sign that things are getting towards normal not back to work not fair enough that it's fascinating that's the sort of macro data that when the government does it people cry foul member after the department of homeland security was formed people said wait a minute you're listening in on our tracking vast swaths of data and seeing if some phone calls are going to certain parts of the world and they said don't worry we won't listen in on your calls were just seeing what's happening out there people get very frustrated with or threatened by that right now it strikes me in the private sector is a very valuable tool will pick up here in a minute John to Gerry is on the line Steve Burke trends in the WGN radio news about some scattered showers through the day today will get up to around fifty degrees for a high it's forty eight right now on Wall Street the Dow is better by three hundred twenty points the nasdaq up one fifty nine and the S. and P. five hundred up forty five points literally the other day Lauren left and I heard a report of traffic and it was kind of bad on one of the roads I thought I almost miss traffic jam or at least the reports of them because that would be a return to normalcy now do we have any of that right now no actually but we do still have closures related to covert testing sites so just a reminder on the south side one hundred and eleven bids is closed between Perry and state protesting at Roseland community hospital and on the west side Harrison is closed between central and lotus for testing at Loretto hospital but the roads are slick so do be careful so we avoid the traffic jams Larnaca WGN traffic central.

"One ovary welcome back on Gerald in art and you're listening to a covert nineteen additional Chicago speak so we're not accepting calls hospitals are the front lines of treatment for cobit nineteen as well as addressing the diseases racial disparities one hospital that is acutely aware of the health disparities that exist for African Americans as a hospital at the front line of providing services for black folks on the west side and I'm talking about V. Loretto hospital in joining me right now is its president and CEO George Miller Mister Miller always a pleasure to have you on the show first of all how are things going with you N. delivered a hospital well certainly we thank you for having us and we're very fortunate that they were able to communicate to your Airways thank you very much for that secondly we are doing relatively well didn't it in spite of the fact that this is a very dangerous all all baggage that's going around we strongly encourage everyone to follow all the distance in all sorts of different rules to wear a mask to wash your hands all and you can do all of the other things that require a wiping things down this is a virus that is trance are from people to people should be on the stand why people want to get back out and get to work but all this week I just staggering well over a million people in America yeah hi tech you need to see the death of bald sixty thousand fourteen across America Hey hello yes people will make up about fifteen percent of the population act Americans Hispanic Americans yet make up fifty percent of the head yeah all this is the first chance for people to people so distancing grandma that washing hands all have a positive effect you have been a focal spokesperson for the health disparities that exist even prior to covert nineteen you always like to talk about just going down the Eisenhower expressway talk to our audience about what you mean in terms of highlighting the disparities that exist between black americorps black Chicago and what Chicago yes and and that this whole big virus has put eight being on that issue as you just indicated at mine my frustration was if you live downtown life expectancy there is eighty eight point two years of life would become just nine miles on that I have exit twenty three be two ninety when you come to the Austin community that a life expectancy drops by twenty years to sixty eight point two years of life he's twenty years of life on a twenty minute drive and my of my friends that live in Inglewood it's thirty years difference between between Sri the bill which is a very small part of downtown Chicago in Inglewood just six miles away it drops down by the difference is thirty years of life and that just should not be and that's one of the reasons that we poured the two one half years I've been in Chicago for the disparities in health care Indian equity in healthcare in the that part from the findings help your situation in the world but yet the disparity exists so if you just ask for Nicole but nineteen in Chicago where after making make up thirty percent of the population seventy two percent of the deaths are African American and that's just wrong but that's on there and what that has done is peel back the fact that we've got a hot a different delivery system could take care of our most valuable humans those that are born of them all who may be poor I am in limbo thank you most people who are poor are still working it's still working poor that means they pay taxes but they may not be able to afford health insurance because it is expensive so we have to look at different ways the liver health care and we have to do better a better job of population health we should not have pockets of people who would die twenty or thirty years earlier Jack because of where they live we have to change that will leave the system and that the the beach in love that we have talked about spoke with a very passionate about and got a change in this city is the perfect everybody here at that thank you everybody but disproportionately affected African American community there we don't think that's right and we're going to continue to speak truth to power and speaking loudly to cancel we do thank you for giving us this this being it for this opportunity to talk about this issue I know the mayor looks to Loretto hospital as part of its rapid response task force what are you doing in that regard yeah that is helping us to correlate make sure we have all the right resources at the right place at the right time well if we can make the trip to communicate to the public all the resources that are available recently we were very honored and pleased that the governor asked us to be one of the testing site on the west side of Chicago so at the with at a hospital this past Monday we set up to do testing both drive been M. walk in testing the cast off read the results back in approximately seventy two hours but it only could have been done without the cooperation and collaboration with them with the governor of the state JB Pritzker and the mayor Lori Lightfoot to make this happen for us and the cooperation coordination has been absolutely fantastic but I couldn't give them praise about pricing out all our own team we have a tent set up outside our team has been working like they make this possible well we have physicians nurse practitioners we have registration we had people directing traffic to make it available for the Austin community in two days we have a thousand people what for us is just remarkable but more important is the right thing to do for this community now are there any restrictions with regard to the availability of testing do you have to you don't need to be a first responder or an essential worker in this case or do you all have to be a resident of Austin well our goal is certainly to our brave police officers firemen pressures bondage it is a mess we want to make sure they had the opportunity to do so but because of all the hot spot the government of mare recognize how often the hot spot yep open to the Austin community you do not need an appointment at this time both have been lined up we were open from nine to four folks lined up at at five forty five in the morning to get reliable both walking and dropping the disk in writing last Tuesday hello damper on the the walk in traffic but you can come in the car and we have had take care of their bodies and lab we try to cut it off around one or two because of the lan salon forget about him and a lot of so we still do the catching up to poor poor clock still today we do not have any restriction because off the hot spot in your cat so we can drive the number of deaths and bend the curve of infection and stuff yes as a hospital administrator how has this impacted the bottom line over at the local hospital well it had a impact for sure and I appreciate you asking the question obviously of both both the governor and the mayor saying to shelter in place all the number of elective surgeries we've had here they've gone down to almost zero thank you for all patients we have clinics here at the hospital on a.

N. N. a date the copy of the letter in it the president says his team is committed to supporting people through these tough times also thanks Congress for passing relief legislation a law that enabled the check requires the notices but it doesn't say they have to have trump's name on them that sounds like campaigning to mean it's inappropriate and it shouldn't be done listen this is a time where you get people what they need you know you don't have to it's you know maybe it's lovely to sent a personal letter to somebody but this is the time to get them the money that they need and you know having some kind of a note inside there is I'm shocked by it I don't understand it it's not right the physical stimulus checks have also drawn criticism for the inclusion of the president's signature name Asian markets are trading higher after Friday's gains on Wall Street the Dow rose two or sixty.
