"Tell everybody, how are you doing? Doing great. I think overall doing great. You're still watching the wolfpack awesome. You got that right. How's that going? Well, done seem like I've got very far. But I'm still pulling for. And so just to clarify here, this is 2016 now. This is a year after he missed that half court shot. This is when the story finally gets to run on ESPN and when it gets out there, what was the reaction like? It was, it was unbelievable. It was overwhelming. And it wasn't just, you know, this national reaction or, you know, people just being inspired. You know who's inspired the 1983 NC state wolfpack. Who, by the way, fired what was essentially a half court shot that came up short that Lorenzo Charles slammed home to win the game against Houston. Derek Woodward came in visited Scott hospital. And people around the nation were responding. They sent him messages. They sent him flowers, they apologized to him. For laughing at him, one year earlier. And I think whatever will learn was a lesson that I think we could still learn today, particularly when it comes to social media, which is don't be so quick to judge. You know, my wife says all the time to my daughter, you don't know what's going on to someone else's house. And we certainly didn't know what was going on with Scott park's house, the people who laughed at him in Greensboro didn't know. And now it was out there. And Scott took great pride in that. And he let everyone know, I'm not mad at you. But maybe be nicer to the next guy. If it took a missed shot, if it took just a little bit of online embarrassment. To get this story out there, it was worth it, right? Absolutely. Count me in let's do it again. Yes, sir. And so this McGee is where I do need to bring us up to the present. Because it's been almost exactly 8 years now, since Scott park's half court shot. And so what's the latest with them? Well, you know, it's interesting because you work on stories and you and I both are forcing it to have worked on a lot of amazing stories in our careers. And they're the ones that you become attached to. And it's because you like the subject or is because you're inspired by it, I just like Scott park. I felt a connection with Scott park from the beginning. Probably because of our similar upbringings, probably because of our similar love for the NC state wolfpack growing up. And then we're talking to him again. And we would receive videos from Ellen. Of Scott walking with assistance. And Scott being recognized on the floor of the Virginia state House. And all these inspiring moments.

"Other notable results from the weekend, Arizona lost its Stanford. Which must have been like shocking for the Arizona fans who kept tweeting me. And last week, because I dared to have Arizona outside of the top 5 in the top 20 5 and one, I bet they couldn't believe Arizona would lose a game. Like that. Create an extended its winning streak to 8. Got a victory over UConn inside the Conor oberst arena, so that was nice for the Blue Jays. Oklahoma state beat Iowa state. 5 straight wins from Mike boynton's cowboys. UCLA wanted to Oregon. Beat the ducks on that ugly court, Texas tech talk Kansas state, Baylor won at TCU, bears are now 9 and one in their past ten. Indiana wanted Michigan, jet Howard. I discovered him. I was thinking about just a reminder, I brought him up on the pod before you did, just so we're clear, but if you want to take credit, that's fine, but I discovered it, Howard. I just met at the Iverson classic. And I discovered him before that on the recruiting trail. But whatever, it's fine. No, I discovered him, I was in classic last like June or something. April, April, April or May or June, somewhere in there. I discovered him. It was in Bartlett. Airballed a jumper in the final seconds. You'll see that too often. It was like, and here's Jed Howard for the win. It looked like it looked like the shot in the NC state national championship game. Except there was nobody said there was nobody there to grab it and dunk it. Lorenzo Charles, not in the building, not at the Chrysler center. Jet Howard never needed a Lorenzo Charles. More in his life than he needed him yesterday. Providence fell at St. John's. Golden Gate Mike, big win. After Adam zagoria reported that St. John's has no plans to replace Golden Gate Mike. Are you questions eggs? I'm not. Zach braziller, beat writer for the Johnny's refuted that report. So I just feel like it's New York media beef. It is. I don't know if it's beef. It's just disagreement. Let's call it beef. This is New York media beef. I hope you think we know how this is going to happen. Golden Gate Mike's going to cruise it to 19 wins again. He's going to stick on for one more year. That's how he does. That's how he rolls. I hope it doesn't escalate to gunfire. It will not. It will not. Why did you go there? It will not. Sometimes things escalate to gunfire. The gunfire in America. Not with the great Golden Gate Mike. No. No, I mean, between Zack and zags. Oh, okay. No, it's not either. No, zags is at worst, busting out a frisbee, okay? What if zags throws a frisbee at Zach's head? It's that nonzero chance. Right there. Nonzero. If you caught a frisbee right there, they probably make you cough a little bit at least, right? Arizona loses that Stanford for the first time since 2009. It had won 23 of his last 25 games against the cardinal. And the last time Stanford be Arizona, a ranked Arizona team back in oh 5 O 5, Arizona was ranked 13th when that happened. Weird one, similar to how Philip haskey had been going against what he had been putting up from an average standpoint, a credit to Jared Haas, man. As you listen to Bellas came in, averaging 27 points and ten and a half rebounds in his past four games. He went for four points and no boards and four files. Shut them down. Shut them down. Credit to the cardinal, Hoss is in a hot seat situation. It's expected Stanford will move on from him at the end of the season, coaches will take any kind of victories of any kind. But this big time stuff. Goodwin, happy for him, happy for that staff. If you feel like losses like this one, like Arizona has now shown a few times here where it's just like it got blown out at Utah. It had the weird one at home against wazoo. It got blown out against Oregon. The variability with zona, it's on the table. I'm not as bullish as I once was about me thinking I might try and get cute and put zone into the final four. I might have to pump fake on that. We'll see. But that was that was as surprising as a result in my opinion as any that we saw, even though there was on the road. You mentioned Oklahoma state a quick on Oklahoma state and Baylor and the big 12. Baylor's Baylor wins again TCU is, you know, it's just, it's on a three game losing streak and is having some issues there and so it goes. But Baylor, to me, right back in the final four conversation. In fact, I would even say, even hold off on Oklahoma on the state for a second. You mentioned creighton. Creighton and Baylor were both preseason top ten teams for different reasons. They started well, they dipped kind of floated off the radar to a certain extent, create much more because called Brenner got mono, that dropped like 6 games in a row. Now creightons won 8 in a row and big east play, won a grinder of a game, you know, if Jordan Hawkins steps back 6 more inches, it's a three instead of a two, and then they go to overtime, we'll see. You know, duke, I had to go to overtime and lost. UConn didn't get the chance to go over time and it wound up losing.

"He said it was going to be a stinker and then I kind of talked him into the lines might give him a game and here we are with the Lions leading in the fourth quarter. You have my word if they lead in the fourth quarter. I would never ever in my life ever root for a player to get injured, but maybe if Josh Allen could just get a little touch of the flu Thursday. A little cold, just a cold, a little cold on Thursday morning. Then maybe I'll, you know. By the way, the lions can score points by the way. They did what we had on the Dallas a couple of weeks ago, but they can put up points. Yeah, yeah, but yeah. Are we done? Are you close to being done here? We're all done. We can say goodbye. I got one story I want to leave you with. Go ahead, wrap it up with this. Here we go. Because it has to do with the NCAA tournament. Go ahead. And use you ask me something about when did I first start thinking about giving it up? I want to tell you when I really first started thinking about doing it, not giving it up. Okay, I'm going to go to the opposite end. 1983, Houston, North Carolina state, at the pit in Albuquerque. My Alma mater, Houston. I ride in to the game on the Houston team bus. Houston basketball was my entree entrance into the business. I was the public address announcer as a student. I hosted guy Lewis the coach's show on TV on the NBC affiliate as a student. I owe a lot of my career to that basketball program. There is an outside chance, by the way. Don't tell anybody that my last game I ever call might be my Alma mater winning the championship. That night in Houston. They are preseason number three and Kelvin Sampson is incredible coach. So anyway, that aside. 1983, right in with the team, the stadium, the arena, the pit doesn't have seats. It has benches, bench seating, with a number, you know, spread out every two feet. Seat 15, 16, whatever. I went in, I had the whole arena to myself. I'm gonna squeeze in somewhere. And I ride back on the team bus after the game. But their inside the arena was vacant, except there was a CBS set, right in the corner. The far end from where Lorenzo Charles dunked my dreams and dunked NC state to a championship. And they're sitting on this perch.

"We moved to North Carolina right when I got down there and my high school coach, he worked for Jen valvano's camps every summer. So that's the first place he brought me to. So went to NC state. We would go up to games when I was in high school and got to be a little friendly with some of the guys that were also from New York because I kind of gravitated towards that when I moved. Lorenzo Charles was from Brooklyn, Ernie Myers was from Harlem. I was from Harlem, taking benzos from The Bronx. So, you know, I kind of gravitated towards those guys and went to NC state. Had a great four year run and then, you know, got drafted into the pros and that's what I met you. What was Jim valvano like as a coach? Oh, he was great, man. You know, one thing about V that, you know, people don't know, like a lot of these a lot of college coaches, they don't want to show you that they care about you and V now whether for sure or not, you know, we felt like we felt like he cared about us. So, you know, we just, we just kind of, we just kind of like, we felt he was a great guy to play for because he seemed to care about you and the only other professional coaches that I felt that from was probably Rudy tomjanovich and Chuck Daly. As far as like caring about you off the court and V cared about it, it seemed like they cared about us off the court. So he was a great to play for. Obviously him caring about you, but what made him special to get you guys a group of guys to play and fit in. I know that caring part is important, but was he a motivator? Was he a developer? I mean, what were some of the other intangibles that he had? He was a motivator. Definitely motivated. I can remember like before we played our ACC championship game against Carolina Carolina was number one in the country. And we had just we coming to the tournament. We had won like 6 in a row. But I don't think we were ranked yet. I don't remember us being ranked yet. But you're not going to remember him telling us a story about his dad his dad had just died. And he would break down in the tears like right in front of you. And that had us ready to do whatever for him. And he would get ready to jump up and go out and, you know, he must have played it right 'cause he's like, no, no, no, not right now. Not right now. And we're ready to go, no, no, no, no, not right now. All right, let's go. So that, you know, he was just a great motivator. Okay. Did you expect to go pro? No, I didn't, to be honest with you. I was playing basketball having fun at it. And what made me think that I could go pro, I got invited to the Olympic trials, at 88, and I made it to the final 16 guys. And then I realized that maybe I could maybe I could do this professionally, but I was just playing having fun. I wasn't thinking like, a lot of kids today, they think more about professional professional basketball. I wasn't even thinking about it. To be honest with you until after that Olympic trials and that was my junior year and then going into my senior year I thought I might have a shot then. That is wild. Like the percentage chance that a high level D one player has to play in the NBA is so low and yet all of the older 90s, 80s players you played around, like it seems like every one of them was like, I don't know that I was gonna play the NBA. Whereas like today, it's the opposite. It's like everyone these guys and it's like, do you know how unlikely it is that you're gonna play in the game? Because you chuckle, I was playing basketball one because my parents didn't have the money to put me through college, so I was gonna use it that vehicle, that aspect. But then I was playing it because I enjoyed playing the game. And somebody gave me an opportunity to play in front of a lot of people. I'm like you. It wasn't until like my last two or three games left in the season. I thought, hey, you know what? Jerry West came to one of our practices 'cause he knew coach ellenberger. And it was like, okay, well, let me just give this a shot, but you all write the kids nowadays, they expect to go to the pros, and I tell kids all the time. There's only, if I got a room of 30 kids, I'm a tell them, there might be one, maybe two of you guys that might get invited to an NBA camp, okay? Not even making a team, but just to get camp. So that's a chance. And you know I can't start. So Jackie, 89, you get drafted by the calves. You go to training camp and what were some of the, like when I got drafted, I had a vicious veteran group, man. I had luja and Rhine boom. I had some guys, what were some of the crazy things they had you do as a rookie, 'cause you know there's always that rookie of me. Hey, Michael Cooper here. What was some of the crazy things they had you do as a rookie, because you know there's always that rookie of music. Well, I remember like my group of guys that I had my vets I had was tree Rollins, Larry dance, Paul McCartney. They were great got hot rod Williams. They were great guys. So they had me singing. I had to sing in front of everybody. What song did they win? I had to sing my school. To a school fight, so that I did not know. So I had to get the words to it and sing and it was funny because one day Larry was saying like, yo, you got to sing, you know, they called you rook. So you got to sing. And I ain't singing them. Yo, yo, must be crazy. So then Larry said to Lenny Wilkins was the coach. And he was like, yo coach, rook said he ain't gonna sing, and there were many turned and was like, oh, he'll sing. I was like, damn, the coach hit on it too. I was like, all right, so then I got the word to the school song. And I sung it, and sometimes they would do like little stuff to harass me on the road. Sometimes I would get up early and always eat breakfast. One of them would come down, and I would be eating, and they might come by, you know, you don't mess nobody food, they come by and just take a fucking just digging and take some of my food, man, but then they would say, you know, I'll be ready to fight, but they would take care of me later though. So I took all of that. Let's hear a little bit of your fight zone. Your school song. Man, I don't forget that thing. Go to hell, Carolina, something so. I don't even know the words no more. I forgot him. I'm glad they didn't make me do that because my guys was Adrian dantley. And careen, I had three guys. We're about to grow up. So AD, I had to go pick up his dirty laundry after practice. I had to get there and Ron boom was my other guy. Had to pick up their laundry, as well as Korean, and then I had to take it to the trainer, get it.

"Probably would win somebody in that Kenny Smith time frame. Maybe before that? But yeah, around there. John. I mean, probably like early 90s, so mantras Calabria, George lynch kind of that group. Mine, I remember two. I remember because he was hitting the reason. It was like a three point shot. You breaking up on us, man. Dang, this is epic. Can you hear me? Tommy, that's Jessica Guinness. Is that the world doesn't want Shirley to give away all the good scoop tonight? Where Gigi is going? He did. He said that he did. That was it. Say your answer. Oh, I left. Oh my God. He did left. I ran him off. That is such a mic drop moment for sure, too, by the way. I went to a Carolina basketball game and like 82 or something like that. So yeah, I think I turned down tickets to go see Michael Jordan. Play in Carmichael because I had Saturday morning basketball practice. And I didn't want to miss practice. I was dedication. It worked out. We're all said it was Jeff lebo and Kevin Madden for him. Those were his guys that he recognized were Carolina basketball. You know who Kevin Madden is, Gregory? No. Do you know who Jeff lebo is? Yes. Okay. He only knows who he only does in his coach Levi. He never knew his first name. He only knows him as coach. I know his son. This is a, we need to get out of here. But before we do though, hold on the first basketball game, I vividly remember, was like I can like put yourself there, you know, now I can passing was Lorenzo Charles dunk for state in 83. I thought you were going to go right on my cart right Carmichael or something. Jack Cobb. The blond bomber. But I had, but yeah, I mean, obviously I was born in 71, focused on go ahead, Gregory. "ESPN on the call with that one. And once I got finished with calling the switchbacks game and we have plenty on that today. In fact, head coach Brandon Burke will be my guest next hour. To talk about it, but I decided to stick around for what I thought was going to be about five minutes. Cause there's only like 90 seconds left on the clock. In the Phoenix Clippers game and I thought, Well, I only be here for Few more minutes. Already been on the air for 67 hours, So I mean, what's another few minutes at work before I head home? Well. The last 90 seconds of the game took about half an hour. But But What a finish. I I fully expected Jim Valvano to run onto the court. Right. Did anybody else like immediately when I saw DeAndre eight and dunk that basketball? I'm like Lorenzo Charles. North Carolina State Wolfpack. Jimmy V. Running in the court wants somebody to hug no one's hugging him. What a wild wild finish to that basketball game. And what a win for the sun. You know, they don't have Chris Paul, right? I mean, we're All aware of that the guy that was Receiving M V P votes that some said should be the M V P of the league. Hasn't played in two games. Sons are up to. Oh, Amazing what they're doing. All right. Here's 388 and after the game on The reason why he just kind of stood there after he don't dunk the basketball. I mean the celebration and the reaction was a little shaky that I wasn't too sure what I did You know, I I wasn't too sure of uncounted. I didn't want to be a blooper and none of that. You know what I'm saying? I just wanted to No. Just get to the next plane or the rest Hurricane, you know, confirm what it is. You know, I was just so anxious. I was really stress. That was a lot. You know, I'm looking at the fans. I'm looking at the environment. It was a lot, but you know, that was my best player, you know, try to embrace it. And he also said that he just did what Monty Williams told them to do. You heard right there that he wasn't sure if what he did was against the rules. His coach told him what to do. In the time out. And he did it. Chalk one up for trust in your coaches. And what a throw by what a pass by Jae Crowder. I mean, that was on the money. And the sons are up now to Oh, I understand. If you have started to phase out basketball, maybe because you're upset that the Nuggets are done. Maybe it's LeBron related. Maybe it's just the way that basketball is played. Maybe you just don't like basketball. Like I tell you If you're not watching this on a nightly basis, you are missing out. We're seeing some amazing basketball being played by people not named Ben Simmons. Amazing basketball. Amazing finishes to these games, compelling series compelling storylines. And for all the discussion over the past few months about how ratings are down in the NBA, people are done and it's because of this, and that and the other NBA playoff ratings. Are some of the highest they have ever been. Do you know why that is? NBA hasn't softened maybe a little bit, but it hasn't softening its social justice messaging. It's not. I mean, it's compelling basketball, and that certainly helps. But the reason for this There's no LeBron James. That's the reason for this. We talked about once LeBron went out What an opportunity for the NBA. To move on from the super team, and they still have you know Brooklyn still existed. Clippers. Are they a super team or just a super duo? They were hanging around. But Brooklyn was really the only true super team with three legitimate superstars. That joined up either via free agency or by torpedoing Their relationship with their previous team, James Harden. But the Clippers are still kind of in, although they don't have co I Leonard, and we may not see Kuai Leonard in a Clippers jersey ever again. But the opportunity that the NBA had here Was to showcase the next generation. Of players and how spread out the talent is In the NBA. In that game last night, you saw three stars. In the NBA. Paul George for the Clippers, of course. DeAndre Ayton and Devin Booker. And also let's not forget What Devin Booker did on that play with the back screen. To keep a defender from rolling to DeAndre Ayton and potentially blocking the shot or You know, putting a big man that's not a great free throw shooter on the line. Whatever the case may be, Devin Booker busted nose and all. With the with the back pick. To keep DeAndre Ayton free and allow him to be able to dunk that. But you have three stars in in in that Game. You have two of the NBA's brightest stars. Beginning their Eastern Conference final series tonight with the honest and trade Young You had at various points. Nicole Yokich, Donovan Mitchell. Yeah, Luka. The NBA is in great hands. If they would just be allowed to shine. Away from the shadow of LeBron James..

"Espn. The only reason why. Jim valvano even has some type of Credibility and turn them while the legend lives on not so much for his fight against cancer but that platform was given to him to be an impact player in the fight against cancer based on what he did with one thousand nine hundred being coach for the nineteen ninety-three nc state. basketball team. the miracle run. It was a great run and it was an unbelievable run and that was a fantastic run but now north carolina state was not a cinderella team. If you take a look at the squad if you look at take a look at the talent if you take a little bit expectations. They weren't cinderella team. In my opinion under my definition they entered the season right to the top twenty and they entered conference play ranked number nineteen in the nation so they ended the season right in the top twenty. They finished the regular season. Seventeen ten eight and six in the sec. They lost their best player Senior captain derrick. Wittenberg the math highschool for seventeen games during the season. He broke his foot against virginia. When virginia had fellow wilson jeff layup in some guiding. Ralph sampson. I'm virginia with right number one at that time. So basically you know. Nc state was playing neck and neck with those guys wouldn't burn breaks his foot and misses the next seventeen games in those games. North carolina state went tended seven. That explains the amount of losses that they had. They didn't have their best player on the team. And that's stoning five. You take a look at their starting five kozo mcqueen six eleven. He was a good player. Derek low a. sidney lowe. Derry wouldn't bird. Were one of the best. College guard compost during that time when they play without and they were both highly regarded high school players coach by morgan wootten at demand for high school thorough. Bailing the other starter on the team with an acc player that season. Who what the number seven pick in the nba draft. The eighty-three draft by the utah jazz. Lorenzo charles the one who made the dunk off the air ball by wittenberg to us. Deal the victory for nc state over five slamma jamma in houston fifty. Four fifty two. He was a highly regarded. High school player out of brooklyn was a sophomore. This was a talented swan that we're talking about here. This wasn't some school from. I don't know what conference i never heard of your conference. You can come up. in beating. The big boys they played the big boys wouldn't burn in low had had four years of playing against the best of the best thorough daily. Was one the best players in college basketball and that was a talented squad. Terry gannon were the shooter off the bench. I mean they had a really good squad. Co this wasn't something where it was like unbelievable. I can't believe north. Carolina state did now the teams that they played the first round. They can pepperdine die where you know. They won in double overtime. I think the fact that you know in the acc tournament basically what to read was season one's over la- game season is done so yeah they had the win..

"Win a game. As i said put it in overtime but it was a significant shot. The first of its kind of going to say ask my second one. Third one third one is about a coach. This is a meme rates. A series of things that somebody did. Like sky clocks like creams skyhook. A singular event camping in early nineteen eighty nine time. I was in college just graduated from college. It was march which is of course. The marshall march madness time. Everybody wants to watch basketball and guys were living at the time. We were the same way. We were watching basketball. During march like everybody else. Now there's some buzzer beater. Win a game. So i'm talking about Nc state north carolina state is playing and jimmy valve is your coach and he was Four personality wonderful person to listen to talk and being perspective coach time. I wanted to hear everything he had to say. Because i felt like. I could learn from great coaches john. Wooden jimmy valvano just to name to basketball coaches. That had a lot to teach a person who is gonna coach in any championship game. Nineteen eighty three. I believe early eighties. Anyway and the game is won on. Buzzer beater is the ugliest buzzer beater. Ever not the pretty shop for sure so kids from north carolina state aches shot. It may be shy. There's still some argument whether he was shooting or passing. I don't really know what he put the ball up against Always houston yeah. So north carolina state. They're huge underdog in the pilot game. Houston's iconic you guys our economy. We were vice slamma jamma. There were like the bomb early eighties houston university in basketball and nc state was definitely the underdog for the game tied. Fifty to fifty to the north carolina state guy throws a brick now. Was it a pass or shot. Dead debate goes on the way short. However renzo charles teammate. He sees the ball coming down. And i think he has presence of mind to know that. Ball's short so he goes up and he gets it in mid air just before any defender realizes what's going on. I think most people are kind of backing off waiting for rebound with the wasn't gonna be one. Lorenzo charles gets up in the air. Catch his in dunks it right. They're all in one spell swoop one second left and that is kind of the question was shot wasn't a pass was a alleyoop pass. Nobody's really said definitively. That didn't matter north carolina. State lindsey game. Now that's a good moment in itself but for me the best moment was the part of the year celebration. That erupted from the wolfpack bench. As soon as that happened. Coach jim valvano. All kinds of personality loved his players. He was great in the press conference. Pregame postgame was fantastic. Listen to. He's caught on camera running down the court desperately looking for someone to celebrate with. He makes a beeline for the nearest player. But before he gets there. That player gets mugged by another player near huggins. So he veers to the side heads for another guy seems to be standing by herself and other. Maybe it was a coach or another player team person. But before he gets there that guy's getting starts getting hugged and mobbed by somebody else so he veers off in another direction in a series of those kinds of things went on for a while to leave. Valley found somebody to celebrate and it was just it was funny to watch and you almost felt sorry for him and but it was just a matter of bad timing and it was just the circumstances but it was jim galvano running down the court looking for somebody to hug and not being able to find. The name made a funny video about it was really funny. And you know what the power of the moment i think was magnified some less than ten years later really. When coach v died after a battle with cancer and showed that picture quite a bit then almost ten years later. It was even more sad. Jim vinyl looking for what was wants funny and comical became tennis sad. So that's my third. Great sports moment related to basketball. All right. here's my number one.
