How Guest Host Julie Hartman Came to Conservatism

"Never thought that i would become a conservative. Because i thought that some conservative positions mainly those on immigration and gun control. I thought those were mean and bigoted but that all changed last may frankly during the black lives matter riots. And obviously the circumstances surrounding george floyd's passing Were incredibly unfortunate. But the reaction that i saw from the people around me was so astonishing and not the way that i thought that we should be handling an event like this first of all the lumping in of all police officers who i view as heroes with the sins of a few the defense the police movement which prime primarily has the effect of harming black people the rioting and the lewd looting that i saw on my very own city there were helicopter circling over my house. These these lockdowns how about protesting during a pandemic when the very people who were protesting previously decried other gatherings unsafe. These maoist self-criticism sessions. That one has to have for their white privilege the fact that the black lives matter websites that they wanted to dismantle the western notion of a nuclear family the list goes on but the point is that is what really woke me up and i thought to myself if this is the left this is not who i am and i decided to seek out another perspective so i scour the internet as twenty do and lo and behold i come across prager your university which is genesis organization and i went down a total rabbit hole. I learned so much. I watched every single one of their videos in the span of three days and they changed my mind on so many issues and even the issues that they didn't change my mind on at very least i came to respect the conservative position. I no longer saw is meaner bigoted and that was incredibly valuable to me.

The Federal Government Abuses Its Power With Mandates

"Mandates. The federal government. The federal government has demonstrated time and again that it abuses its power. When he goes off. The constitutional limits. It abuses its power. We also see that it uses its its power. In ways that advantage certain people and certain political entities versus others. We see it every day. January six versus the entire summer of violence, rioting, looting, arson and maiming. So people don't trust the federal government and they don't trust the media. "You have been playing cash for many years well over a decade and kind of mistakes cash. We're not talking high nose bleed kind of what is it. Been like for that because we will talk about your youtube presence. You're logging in how that really is taken off. But well prior to that you were poker player. It's not that you are of vlogger that plays poker. It's really the other way around. Is that you played poker for so many years and kind of logging has kind of come into this space how was it and what were your trials and tribulations playing cash poker for a living because everyone loves seeing the big scores but people don't understand the grind sometimes of six sessions in a row where you don't win everyone's happy when we have a twenty five hundred five thousand dollar pot and can show it on on air but how many times do you struggle struggle struggle and flush dr doesn't get there or you flopped upset and they get run a runner and now you're going home with you know only job in the world where you can work x. number of hours and go home poor right. I mean it's very rare that that happens talk about your trials and tribulations in how it got to the point where you really felt like you could steadily make a living at this. Because it's really hard. I remember the first day that i left my job as a software developer with 401k health benefits and all these things i remember thinking like if i if i don't make good money playing poker i can always go back and get offered job again and you know the i i i was doing. I was doing well right out of the gate. But you gotta keep in mind that it wasn't that difficult to make money playing cash game poker if you had a solid strategy fifteen years ago because the money was everybody you could find a two five game anywhere that was great and you know there was probably one hundred to five games on any given night in las vegas during this time so i i was doing well but naturally as you progress in any career you want to make more money than the previous year and you want to get better and you want to further your career and you know. That's that's easy to do. Fifteen years ago and poker. You know you could start applying one three. You can make thirty five thousand dollars that first year. Feel like it was amazing but the next year. You know your your goals maybe fifty thousand in the next year your goals. Maybe seventy five thousand. But then you reach a point where you're making around one hundred hundred twenty five thousand dollars a year and you realize that in order to make more than that you need to get substantially better. You need to find better games and the games needs to be big and what's interesting about. That is poker. Games were shrinking. They were getting smaller over the course of the last five to ten years and they were getting tougher. So no i even if even if you got better in your own poker game it didn't ensure that you were gonna make more money than the next year right. I remember i kind of plateaued about six years ago. Where i was in the one hundred to one hundred twenty five thousand dollar a year range and i didn't really see gray prospects for making more than that and and just as a natural Ambitious human being. That started sparking me. Like what else can i do to ignite passion in the game. And what else can. I do to keep things interesting for me. And that's kind of how you know. Creating the poker channel came about My my five ten game had died. That i was playing in san diego on a consistent basis. That game was no more. So i was in a precarious spot. Where how am. I going to continue to make this good money with smaller games and i thought it would be a perfect time to start a new project and i remember those first couple of episodes that i started. I didn't think anybody's gonna watch him. I was just. I was just trying to get better at public speaking. And you know perhaps china Develop some other avenues of interest at a time. When i was unsure where the cash games could take me As far as the ceiling was and it it took off after the seventh episode. When i lost sixty five hundred dollars in a in five ten in in one session. I picked up the camera and put it in my face and i was like this sucks because like this game doesn't run twenty four hours anymore. I got like eight hours a day. That i can play this game. It might take me a while to win back. Sixty five hundred kind of share that on my youtube channel and algorithm picked it up. And they're like wow. This is a real poker player. That's making youtube videos. So i think that the looting to what you talked about before. I wasn't scared to talk talk about my thought process. I wasn't scared to say how i played hands. I was competent and my poker game. I think one thing that a lot of people have have happened as their newer poker players that are making you content so they're kind of more Afraid to just say what happened right and like you know because people are gonna show up in the comments and be like oh you played that like an idiot or what. Are you doing three batting without hand but for me. My confidence in my overall poker game. That part didn't bother me like if you were gonna talk crap about my game in the comments. I was fine with that. You know and i think that. That's what destroys a lot of people in the early stages shirt will have that confidence in know the when you sign yourself up for youtube comments the youtube comments they're gonna come come

Biden Fails to Consider Antifa and BLM Rioters in Democrat-Run Cities for Rise in Crime

"So Biden says, a whole bunch of stuff yesterday in his proposal to combat street crime. It was all colossal bull. You get it. He was cut one. Cue that up for me, Jim. So Biden supposedly found a solution towards the massive crime wave problem happening in liberal cities. Gee, I don't know Is it because liberals can't stand? The police want to defund? The police attacked the police Let Antifa and BLM run wild in their cities and have told criminals do it. We're going to do bail reform. You're going to get out. We're not going to prosecute you for looting. Just a quick question for the audience. You think that had anything to do with the crime spike in cities around the country run by liberals, just asking. Just asking a question. Pregunta. Just a question. You think that raises do it? Of course, liberals don't think that has anything to do with it. So what? We're attacking the police in coddling criminals. I mean, there's nothing to do with the crime wave. They're looking at us like we're idiots. So here's Biden yesterday about a 14 2nd cut and he's found two solutions to this liberal crime wave across America. Assault, weapons ban and background checks. Check this out to keep each other safe. Enough. That means Congress pass. Actually sensible gun prevention models. Prevention initiatives is worried It makes sense background checks. "One of the things that self talk about on this podcast quiet bays that gap between the marketing noise and the reality of the value in terms of the women's side. What do you think about that. Because if i'm in charge of a big marketing budget. I can see actually women fighter who has attained a certain level of fame that becomes much more in some ways. There's more to that story than there is pabst to a male counterpart one of the things that i noticed about your book was the what you're saying is essentially. The women are carrying more of the marketing load. They are doing more of that work. Because you're broadening the brand of the rights holder and then associated with the sponsors. Well do you think there's something in that in terms of just the way in which that the brand purpose movement is playing into this. Oh absolutely i think. Laura looted this in the beginning when we first started talking about. How female athletes often see. They see their participation in the sport s beyond themselves. Because it's more of a cause so there is this growing movement within minutes women's sports that really views women's sports as a cause that brands can then conduct themselves to that costs. Because there is this dr on social media for example fans are often encouraging other fans to watch women's sports. Because is how change happens. This is how you show sponsors that the sports matter to you that you want to watch and i think brands are also picking up on the ways that can motivate particularly the audience spaces that tend to watch women's force because at least in the us the audiences that tend to watch on sports or more progressive in war in lend themselves more to supporting issues like women's rights or lgbtq rights and what brands are picking up on. Is that in order to reach that particular. That particular audience demographic is that you need to attach yourself to to sports to women's sports in a way that is furthering. The

"Justice must be administered equally. Republican senators demand answers for 2020 riots and Capitol Hill riot from Department of Justice. Group of Republican senators sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland demanding answers regarding punishments for those who stormed the capital in January six and those who ride it over the spring and summer 2020. So the daily caller first obtained the letter, in other words, was leaked to them. Which was sent to the Department of Justice by these senators. Ron Johnson, Ted Cruz, Tommy Tucker Field at Tuberville. Excuse me, Mike Lee and Rick Scott. The letter, the group of Republicans Why only five? Let's 123 where all the rest of the Republican senators, every damn one of them should be signing this letter. In the letter, the group of GOP senators draw parallels between the treatment of the capital riders to the treatment of riders throughout the spring and summer 2020 and call for clarifications on punishment. At the spring and summer 2020. There were nonstop protests and riots after the death of George Floyd cities were set on fire in companies in small businesses were looted across the country. Republican senators Asked, among other questions, how many people were arrested for committing crimes during the 2020 spring and summer riots in federal law enforcement used Geo location data. For defendants cell phones to track riders down how many of the rioters were released on bail? The federal law enforcement utilized Geo location data from defended cell phones to track prosecutors associated with the unrest in the spring and summer 2020. If so, how many times and for what locations and riots? How many individuals who may have committed crimes associated with protests in the spring and summer 2020 were arrested by law enforcement using pre dawn raids and SWAT teams. Two Doses, Two Different Vaccines: Does It Work?

"And only one of the questions. What we've had most regularly. The last few months is whether you can have one divisive one vaccine Today and then when it's time for a second is whether you can have different vaccine and we've said before that we didn't have much evidence to back it up but we do have at least a little bit of evidence about what happens if people are given one dice of say astrazeneca and the second is yes and just the context here we know from other vaccines by mixing brands. You do get an effective response and sometimes even better response than you do by using the same brand twice around and what. This is a british trial which people have been waiting eagerly for and this is one of their first results is more to come and what they loot tat was the antibody response and also some side effects and what they found was that you got enhanced antibody response to actually go to bigger antibody response by mixing the vaccines with originally and i think it was mostly astro followed by pfizer. And and it was. I think the twelve weeks apart and they got a much more. Robust antibody response by mixing vaccines. The interesting thing was that along with the more robust antibody response more side effects. In other words you feeling crap and there was more people that have had that favor that you might get off to vaccination and also just pain at the injection site as well. Yup which is just your immune system is called reactor agenda city. You don't wanna feel craft vaccine and you wouldn't wanna put people off by thinking they they're gonna feel bad but is that maybe a signal that they're getting a better immune response sending single. You're getting an immune response whether it's a better. Immune response is unclear but there are probably over a large population robin individuals. If you averaged it out you probably average out a slightly better response for people who are getting more of a reaction and it's borne out by this that you getting more of an antibody response than on average overall getting more of a reaction. But i suspect that doesn't tie down to individuals that well

Minnesota Mayor Wants Unarmed Civilians, Not Police, to Enforce Traffic Laws

"Police reform in a very different way. He wants unarmed civilians and not the police to enforce traffic laws. Proposed change comes a month after a white police officer killed a black man named Dante right during a traffic stop Matt Sepik of Minnesota public radio reports on April 11th officer Kim Potter pulled over Dante Ride in Brooklyn Center, a diverse community of 30,000 bordering Minneapolis. Police say it was because of expired plates writes. Mother says it was a dangling air freshener. As Potter and another officer tried to arrest the 20 year old on an outstanding firearms warrant. He broke free and got back in his car. On body camera video. Potter is heard shouting Taser, but instead she grabs her nine millimeter gun. The gun shot is edited out of this clip. Potter, who was a police officer for 26 years, resigned and is charged with manslaughter. That killing led to a week of demonstrations, including violent clashes with law enforcement. Security fencing still surrounds Brooklyn Center police headquarters. Today. Things are quiet as a crew of workers, repairs of looted dollar store across the street. Neighboring scoreboard Pizza, which was untouched, owner Jim Johnson says right should still be alive. They should've let that young man just go mean expired Tabs and is that worth pulling over someone when you already know that there were weapons violation? Johnson, lifelong Brooklyn Center resident says police could have made the arrest later. He's skeptical of Mayor Mike Elliot's proposal. The mayor wants a quote unarmed civilian traffic enforcement department to handle all minor, non moving violations, such as expired plates and broken tail lights. Elliot is pushing Council members to approve his plan soon. We need to do it as if There was an emergency and people were at the PD protesting again. We need to have that level of urgency. I've also been playing minecraft dungeons which game i sort of wrote off when it first came out. That's a pretty damn fun. Diablo like game. I highly recommend it. Especially if you're looking for something fun to play with kids in multiplier it's very pick up and play does a lot of fun. Physics stuff like the enemies. Go flying through the screen and there's like some light rpg customization stuff And it's free on game pass so if you have game pass definitely you. What else came out on came pass. Pc no game called near adamawa atrophy if you saw that came. Ooh that's a good game. Hey here is the thing. I've been playing that. I recommend for everybody and i wish i had played more last year. It's called cloud gardens. Did any of you play this game. Some of us haven't even heard of it. Cloud gardens is delightful. It has kind of like a. Ps one style three d aesthetic in its puzzle game what justin only new fresh tough. I thought i was before. It's like it's a puzzle game but also kind of like maintaining a bonsai tree. Sort of thing. It's more about relaxing and it's just these like little. 3d puzzles of I don't know. I assume an abandoned world like imagine low rez last of the to biofilms. And then you throw seeds on them. And then you add trash in the seeds sprout and grow vines around that trash and your goal is to cover the entire environment in foliage unlike deciding where you place the plants and where you place the trash and it is so so delightful in pretty nice. What performance that on. Its own but i. That's where i'm playing. It and i strongly recommend computers. Not computers what's your favorite parts of great. Well you can talk to them can't you. You can have like. Sometimes when. I have a lonely feeling all open up the like microsoft sam and i'll be like how are you today sam and i can type in like good griffin. I'm your friend forever. And i'll never leave you. Have you done that. It may still only not so lonely. And i like that about computers her next week. Mac book doesn't have a same so i can't be friends with that can i. That's true. I am a pc justin long salon. Got a hold on me. Just long are also best friends. Because he's could. He is also computer next week. It takes too many episode with just two of them yet. Cook chris and i are going to be playing. It takes two which is a game about a couple of getting a divorce so thought we'd play that together. "Great yeah. Okay now everybody. We play anything else as good. Oh let me hop in. i'm sliding in. Wow i off of and played solitaire. Cube which is a ta. Did you have you guys heard of skills. Yeah i've been interested in it. Yes her skills skills like air. We all have skilled skills e No it is. I was very interested in this. Because i thought it was interesting. it is a service where you can you basically like bet on your game of solitaire that you're going to have very small stakes right like a quarter and then the winner gets twice like you earn you. Get the money for winning the thing. What ranch yeah right. It's weird that this exists. I didn't quite believe it but no there it is. You can play. Tetris against people are solitaire. Or whatever and you just make you get the money if you beat them. That sounds like for example. Like there's like a dollar game right where each person bids in sixty cents and then the winner gets a dollar and then. The site gets the commander. Yeah there you go. There's the weird thing is it's being built in like skills as a platform as being built into mobile games And which is interesting because it's weird but also is interesting because it's like part of it is because discover ability so like if you integrate this into your platform then skills can direct people towards your game and helped to like this thing you could do to set your game apart from the rest of the the crowd as far as that goes but i was interested in it because it sounds like wild that that it seems like it would be something that you could abuse with some sort of hacking. Something i would. I think if i was doing this that would be the first thing i think. You want a black hat it you could. You could Breakthrough crack lottery in terms of But it is it's interesting. I just thought it was an interesting thing. I'm not endorsing you. Go out and play fucking four cash solitaire. Even though it doesn't exalted. They're more interesting. If you got twenty five cents on the line to get somebody who's uncle from paducah but listen. Here's the other thing that i actually did wanna highlight is called not for broadcast. He will know. Oh yeah i wanna ask good not broadcast. And i know that. You're i get Team And basically the the game of not not for broadcasts as you are a television news producer that has a live feed of four different cameras. And you're producing a live news broadcasts everything from like Basic stuff like cutting between different camera shots to loading up. The ads queuing the ads when it's time to play them to Choosing which images of you're going to use for like a certain story to accompany it And censoring there's a huge like sensor button to take out like bad language all f in v four different shots and you'll run into situations like they're these protesters that are streaking through this sports competition. And you have to like choose your shots. So you're not getting the the naked people in your shots or else who start losing viewers which it absolutely would not be. That's all frigging great fantastic What is actually a cool of their layer. On top of that is that there is a sort of like anti authoritarian Storyline sort of layered over it. Where there is a new government party that has come to come into power. And you're making choices in your broadcast. Not just on. What makes the best tv but how much you're going to push against this interesting authorities say you've got people calling you like make sure you run this ad for them in the second ad spot. You know they're really a and then there's like outside. The news broadcast parts. There's story segments where you're making just tax base where making choices and seeing how the story votes for your personal life and the choices you make during the broadcast effect that kind of a personal vibe sounds that kind of issue not quite that like It's it's more in the background The produce the news segments are actually the and the new segments are The really genuinely pretty funny And choosing between the two is exciting. And you really do get to like a cook. Serve delicious kind of point where it's like. Okay i got a bleep. His i gotta bleep his curse word and now i gotta switch the camera ever because that person isn't talking and if you linger on a certain shot for more than ten seconds you start losing viewers. Because they want to be entertained. You got switched to a different edit and you got to play the music and then you know you're fading in and out Stuff and cuny ads and it's a it's really cool and they just released a second Big chunk of it. They called the second episode. But it's very it's not for broadcast. That sounds very cool. I do want to we forget. Case dearly wrote the review that justin sang. and i don't think we call case so probably someone else. Yeah i just. I can do a real quick. I was Sort of interested in picking up the wild again just to of kill some time before mostly before monster hunter gets here. Although i'll have a newborn baby when monster hunter gets here so i'm gonna be late to that right But i it's rare. That i can get henry. My my son who's four years old interested in in a game. He's a real jock and bully. But i find that. I have the most success with games like breath of the wild and i don't know why i hadn't thought of like showing it to where you can just kind of do wild shit and he is very into that like the first time we saw robot. Chris has said makoni. Hunter thank you. I don't know why you couldn't didn't want to say that out loud. You gotta be crazy to be based text messages. For the first time we came across One of the little ancient robot enemies like the smaller wines. And i had just gotten the magnet powers which he just had me lift shit up and throw it around for awhile. He's like drop a box on him. So i did and the thing exploded and i saw that. Look on his face of just like. Hey this thing that i thought of that was kinda stupid worked and like achieve thing which is which was so amazing to me on so many levels because it's the thing that i love about breadth of the wild but also the thing i love about game sometimes to see that really click with him was was a genuinely very nice moment and i also think it's been just long enough since my last play through of that game i probably haven't played it and since two thousand eighteen that there's a lot of stuff that i'm coming at sort of i. It seems seems very fresh to me. So i'm i'm loving. Yeah when i was a kid. I had a typing game featuring the barons dame bears and at one point you could fill in the blank for what you wanted. Papa bear to do one of you know we would basically have him. Jump off the roof of the barn and my mind. So i feel like that. This is the new generation of the balancing bayer's space adventure game. Yeah i agree. I think i remember seeing a lot of reviews to that effect. When i came out. This is obviously is to rid of the bernstein. Barriers t text based adventure game. Yeah fresh what else have you been playing. Besides bears I've been playing some game. Pass stuff Obviously people probably know that all of like a ton of bethesda games got added to game. Pass this week As part of bethesda getting bought by microsoft and so one of them was more wind which is a elder scrolls. Played really defied. It and more win came out in two thousand and two and it was..

"Just like don't you think you could build a deck that would basically prevent that from happening not re at that level though. Yeah that's the problem is because you run into a situation because it's just a heart. It's like a math. it's like a scaling question right. It's sort of like what plant was talking about like. It's not about like if i do this. And this and this it's like ono. I've hidden encounter that the scale of the damage is being output. Beats the rate at which right guys able to stay alive. And there's just no. I mean it's not gonna happen. I mean i'm realizing could that. I've made better decisions going into that. That would make me better all well rounded. I don't know probably. But yeah. I think we should probably up just because we could get infinitely. You're so there are so many other little mechanics in this game i recommend belting for our listeners is like i didn't get this game now and he would enjoy it. Oh for sure. Yeah sure but. I also think this is a game that like with navy five six months. Updates is going to be fantastic. I plan on revisiting this game hardcore before the end of the year because i think it will definitely be a piece of the conversation i do wanna put one co corollary complaints and i would like to hear you guys discusses like i've been treating those very much as like a second browser window like yeah have it over here while i'm doing something else over here and i. I think that i probably implant playing it wrong in that sense where i should have more runs where. I'm actually focused on the game. I've been taking much more of a like grinded out. See how the run goes. If i died at starting to run and i think that's part of my progress has been a habit been like paying attention and like focusing on individual runs and i think i would probably be getting more out of it if i was. I am making progress. A little bit faster if i was really. It's an idol. If it's an idol game it is the most active game. I've ever played by like abe requires greater supervision to the point. Like you really like every few minutes. I'm sorry every few seconds. You really need to be making a call. And if you're not you're probably fucking so i agree. I don't think you can play passively. I also for what it's worth on plans point of like waiting. I think this would be better. If it was natively on something like an iphone or switch or something like that that you could pick up and put down right now. I don't think you can save in the middle of the loop and loops can last thirty minutes. So it's kind of a commitment that you're making you could just minimize it. The games forty megs is not gonna kill your future but is is what encourages the way that justin his play. Yeah i think. I think not having that you're whatever i'll put on the background. I think it will definitely hit some sort of mobile platform at some point in the future especially given how insanely well. It's done but yes. I mean it's you know. Even if you have a macbook air runs on mac and it's again forty megs. It'll run on anything that you throw at it so i think it's a pickup yup cool. Well let's take a quick break and we'll get right back into all this great video game discussion and just basic friendship Just good times. Yeah be right back okay. russ it says here Okay segment be. I love to sing. I have a passion for music. Yeah i want be a famous share. My famous singer rest fresh have to share by art. And this is my platform. My body is my instrument. Okay that's a little graphic and Takeaway well i wanted to do a special Reader reviews addition of are singing reader reviews so i thought we do as elda edition given the fact that we just did that. Zelda special where according to the password. So you guys. There's a few other using here if you want to take one but i'll do the first one. This is a review from truffaut. Three six five to do we have to do. Zelda music music from zelda franchise. I'm going to but you don't have to let me think about some bob's great podcasts. Always a joy to listen to these episodes. I've always picked up a number of gains based on their recommendations. Even though even if you don't buy games their chemistry and goofs are always good less. And usually i can pick out what song it is that you're doing and that will definitely could not. What would you say. That was ross. Plan what do you think i i have. No idea was that man. It was loopy song. I thought you were doing zelda song snoopy what you told us your zelda song it says you just said at just seconds ago i.

"Because if i put that rock down i get a little bonus but it's going to get closer to that boss so even those little decisions became more complex. When you're like well. Do i want to burn this card. Do i want to wait and There's a a title called the book that lets you exchange your your card so many hang onto this week cars and tradesmen for the strong cards and then do i have a river. I can put him down to really maximize like it. it really gets. There are no small decisions the further you get into the game and that for me. That's the point and it's where it's really got. Its hooks in me because if you do not take advantage of those things and you don't leverage those things which again the game does not explain it especially well You're just not going to succeed. You're just not gonna they just have to move that stuff fast my point because i it took me probably six hours to get through the first boss to be the first boss and then i don't know do the math. Twenty five hours. Since then enact to and i've never had yet to spawn the second just like it feels like such a huge grind and their shit. I mean shame on me. This is my fault. But like the next advance i needed to make in town was the Was would and i kept doing run after two run and not getting would it. And then eventually i was like. There's going to be something wrong here. And i needed to have the grove which forest basically to get. Would which like that makes sense. I made that connection like I i started thinking more critically about the stuff. I was putting my dad. Depending on what i needed to get but nothing in the game i had to like get on a polygon dot com to make that connection. It's like and i've already so you're you're welcome. I clicked on all the while. I was there. I got fifty pounds of boehner pills time. There is but like it doesn't. It doesn't walk you through that it. Does it help you with that. And like it doesn't indicate to you and it just like i spent ten hours like not really making progress. It's kind of to be for what it's worth. I'm not saying that. This is a justification of that. Because you do need to unlock it. But there is an encyclopedia that you can unlock in the game. Basically details everywhere every enemy. You fight every card every every building. And that's beyond even where i am. Now i still have a guy and you need a lot of would to get it takes too long to get. It's a really cool mechanic though once you get to it because then you start collecting resources. That are basically books of knowledge that you can spend at intelcenter to unlock chapters of the encyclopedia to learn more about like the arcane interactions between still like finding interactions that are like really wild. Like if you put. There's a car called a vampire mansion that when you put it down on the map it adds a vampire to any fights on the tiles that it's touching and if that vampire mansion is touching the buchory which is like the library. You get a different kind of smart vampire was like says all kinds of wild shit about like bad lips. That's going on right next to a if you put one next to a village. Vida and village. It turns into a ransacked village just full of zombies and vampires which is great. Because there's always more than four of them so it helps to get into orbit of expansion but also it turns into something valuable after a few list. Even that has a crush tonight. Can you pressuring it underneath. A give by the hoop. Because i'm throwing up. I don i said what are we. Soccer socks no this classic. Alleyoop stuff. So kasich allahu i when i was starting to fade on it yesterday evening and i made it very very far resisting that mr s russia could told us to do very early but being a real jerk. I refused to do probably because you're a it which is unlocking the rogue yup and the rogue yet so there's three classes that are unlikable in the game you start at the warrior which is a pretty typical like hit stuff with a shield and sword class. The second question. You can unlock very early. It does not require very many resources but is a rogue. i generally don't play as rogues in games. i don't like that play style but In luke completely changes the structure of the game whereas before you were like constantly getting loot as you walked around the loop with the rogue you collect trophies and basically these will turn into loot once you get to the end of the loop Or the campfire so you'll end up thirty trophies and then you hit the campfire and your entire inventory fills dot with like a ton of shit and so what that does is completely make you rian vision like instead of okay throughout this entire loop. I'm constantly changing out my inventory and it's taking forever instead. I'm mike okay. What setup is going to make me survive this entire loop with no other resources right so it really like reimagined it and also there's some fun stuff with like how their stats work. They're much more focused on dodging and damage than they are like rejecting health. It really does reinvasion the game. I have an unlocked. The the third classes the necker mansor and it is tough. I cannot crack the necker. mansor feels broken. Not in a good way. Were the necker mansard. The idea is that rather than you doing. Direct attacks it. It's like the Russ you played monster train right. Yeah somebody here. Played like the I think they call it. The melting remnant is that the that that where it's like more about Sending out lots of minion sits basically summoning yellow for that. And they're fighting for you right and then the skeletons die. You summon more skeletons and the the you don't have a weapon. You don't have a shield. You don't have armor. It's just about the magic that you bring into. Make your skeletons more powerful. That's what i say feels broken. Feels like that needs to patch because like you get into a bad place with your skeletons where the relatively weak and if you hit it find an emmy that's hitting hard you could get up against the enemy the just like one shotting your skeleton as it's as you bring it and it comes out of nowhere.

six hours Twenty five hours thirty trophies fifty pounds yesterday evening ten hours second question first boss tonight this week third classes mike three classes two run second more than four Russ russia every card intelcenter

"I can make it and i never fucking russ can connect. Can i get in the the pitch elevator really quickly. Oh yeah being. oh so. It's a role playing game where you plays the dungeon master. Oh that's not bad. That good work. Chris thank you i like that. I mean because it's so much about balancing the game for a character that you have no control of its yeah mixing paint and roger and then i'm deciding when the came in the character dies so i we've talked we've talked about the broad strokes stuff And i genuinely do really like it but i. I think that. I really have a place in my life for a game like this right now like i like. I said like having this on my ipad like on my lap. While mike watching tv it is kinda perfect for that because you can sort of build a loop in a way where you can be a little bit more hands off especially if you're going at like earlier difficulty when you're a little bit stronger as you wanna try and eat out some resources here. And they're like the game is very clever in how it kind of lets you go for different objectives with each loop like most loops. I'm not sure there's a boss. Once he playing cards you spawned the boss of that. Act right i so far. I've made it to act three. I don't know what you made it to. And but the muslims. I'm like. I'm not going for that because i you know. Maybe i don't know that i'm strong enough. I don't have enough to my camp to like even realistically achieve that. So sometimes i'll just say well this loop. I really need to farm for some food resources. Because i need those to upgrade my x. y. or z. Backwards home so what. The game is it. Lets you go. There's a deck building aspect you go into all of these tiles that you've unlocked and you can select which ones you're going to bring into your your expedition so maybe bring in a maybe you don't bring any groves and blood grows and instead you just focus on meadows in things to make those meadows bloom just inside that will get you more rations. Which will help you what you need to upgrade back home and it was very cool angle for for for me without specifically in addition to just like normal resources like oh anymore would or whatever there are some weird resources that you can only get in certain scenarios. One of them right the orb of expansion. I think it's called where you asked to fight at least five enemies in a single fight in order to get one. I'm like well. I need this new upgrade the only way to get it is orbiting expansion so i built a deck entirely about. I'm going to make it so. I can survive fights with five or more people and makes those fights like super intense. But i can also like. Oh i'm gonna put this tower down that does like damage wall and stuff like that so it's kind of like each run. You do can have a lot of different purposes which i find really interesting and like i was constantly chasing different things which was so that gets into my my my personal barrier to the game. I don't think this is a problem with the game. I think this is just a problem with me. Because i really enjoyed this game at the beginning but the deep fry get into it the more. It feels like math homework were. It's like my the goal of this game is for me to figure out the guide. The strategy for this game sharon. I need to undo all that puzzle in then. Once i figure it out i need to put it into like a nineteen seventy supercomputer and let it slowly parse that equation by doing the loops over and over again and this is a problem. I have just with. I don games in general as much as i can like really let myself get lost in them. I don't feel good after. I played him and with this game. I have that same thing happening. I'll leave it on on the side while this new podcast now. Well i certainly made progress in this. But i never felt involved in it and it doesn't help that. I don't think the writing in this game is very good. I think the writings great. Thank you out of your mind. I can't tell if it's intentional or not. The tutorial writing at the beginning where it's like it did it starts on a on a sour note for me me because it does that thing of like when outlet stupid. Can you believe you add do that. Stupid tutorials like that type of writing and games immediately turns me off and then the rest of the game. I just can't tell. I would feel better if i if i knew for certain that the main character was just a total idiot. And like that's the joke or if keys era this is supposed to be like actually graham. And he's like batman it's is it. I think that it rides that line really well. I'm i'm genuinely shocked to hear you say this because the game is all about basically like everything has been erased not just like in a dark cloud style way where it's like. Oh no our towns are gone. It's like of everything are gone and are erased every time you defeat a boss. Come back home you guys. I saved the day raise. Like what the fuck are you talking about like a world where information has been obliterated and you are now like going on these loops to figure out why and each boss kind of like reveals a little bit more about what is happening. This world it is. It is a pretty huge sort of Like erasure style thing that is that is going on. I think the way that they kind of talk about that is genuinely pretty radical. A caveat to what i said about radical. I the stuff when you're in the loop and you're talking enemies. i enjoy that. I especially enjoyed. Just the design of the enemies. I think the art in this game is fantastic. Yeah it's when. I go back into the village which is right like want something that is like hooking me in pulling me into this world and maybe that's just the nature of a story in which the world is like. They can missing and again i. I am just struggling with like the mood here. Is like extremely darkened depressing. Or is this all goof under taylor type for what is it. Just thought like where it lands for you for me. There's just too many gaps between stuff that feels substantive. Like if you've played games before like you know like we've been out here like this is not like as revolutionary as a lot of people sort of like framed it to be. I think it does a lot of things that are interesting but a lot of the ideas are very idle game I think like the problem for me. And i have. I have a lot of problems. Because i put a lot of time in this game and i think it's very interesting. I think it goes to what you're describing. Is that feeling of like badness that you get with an idol game is someone who's like that is the feeling of like seeing an addiction cycle like realizing like i'm not necessarily having fun. What's happening is. I'm just on like a next next next next run. Incremental growth incremental growth that serotonin hit and. I think there's a way to have that part of the game where it's not like the destiny is a good example. Right where you're on the serotonin loop because it's like new gun new gun new gun new gun but the other half of that is fun. Firefly genuinely fun skill based encounters and shooting right. I think is very close if it had a few more things that were genuinely fun. And not just like mechanical and You know power fantasy race and there's a lot of that feels like croft and it's just not fun when you have to do it for the million of time like placing your meadows and your Rocks and stuff like that is not a huge decision. You get a kind of an idea what you wanna do and then you do it and having to take time to keep stopping to like okay. Let me drag those into their like. Okay let me drag these okay. I got new gear. So let me just drag the new gear into swap out the good stuff or the bad stuff like there's like decisions to be made in there but they're very small and they're not they're not in line with the amount of time it takes to do the boring stuff that doesn't matter at all. I wanna i wanna hop in here and say that i think even that little stuff if fall into more consequential decisions the further you get into the game. I reached a point now enact three wherever knock tile called the river and all that the river does is it doubles the effect of tiles that you place alongside the river And light justice saying like you have a lot of those basic resource cards like rocks And there's a desert card and there's a forest card they have upgraded versions that you can also draw sometimes And again once you place enough. Titles on the map the boss bonds. So there's actually a question of do i wanna place this weaker version of the rock or do i want to play down the mountain which is twice as effective..

"Name is you got warm up your instrument. We'll go to the besties where we talk about the latest and greatest in home interactive entertainment. It's video game club with four friends that want to talk about the best video games around and it has been a a pretty slow period in the game release. I think specifically. I think covid is starting to catch up with some development cycles on so slow and i think it will continue to be a slow year. But that doesn't mean that game stop in fact. There are little gems. What's underneath this rock. It's a little gym and the this this week. Little jim that we want to talk about is called login. And he's a little guy. Make them bounce around. All the mushroom loop hero is the name of the game originally. We were going to valhalla. This week that got punted down the road. Because i think in russet chris wanted to play luthier not val which is cool. Because i played a lot of i'm and then they were like we're not playing val heim and cool. I just wasted that time on video game. I know but it's fine because now i've spent unconscionable amount of time playing loop hero. Rose asked for everybody to show their time played their their play log on steam. Which would be a folly for me. Because i've more or less just left it on. Yeah and then. I've been just sorta dipping in on the all like ipad from the couch doing a little Doing lows steam steam. According to my steam. I got on here to log. It says one playing at griffin do we may want to close it out just for the recording juicy loop but i swear it's paused. Its i who wants to attempt here. I'm going to give it. I'm gonna give it a stab okay. Okay loop hero is a rogue like a rogue like we're basically everyone year more or less starting from zero you are this little. Rpg character that runs along a to d loop of a road And as you progress you might run into enemies and dif- different things on that road largely speaking you have no control over. What year old hero does he'll run ahead or run ahead and fight things and you'll get experience and maybe items but they are doing their own thing. The way you interact with the game is basically you place cards around the road. That helps populate it so imagine it like a strategy game. We're gonna play a town or a graveyard or you're going to place a spider cave and those will determine what your character as they loop around the world encounters around That is like the core of the game. And then there's like a lot of stuff goes on fifty more sort of like rpg. It is an extremely rpg experience. Because then you're also earning equipment during your loops that you are tossing on and then you're also earning resources that you take back to a camp which is sort of been main through line progression system where you can build onto this this camp to add a warehouse here or atta an herbalists hut two things that will assist you in back in the loops. Yeah poor permanent upgrades. that will make you doing loops. I've said this to a lot of people. And i think it's funny that we're doing a podcast because there's no elevator pitch for this game. That makes it sound fun or good. I don't know how you guys feel like. I really tried and i do not think that there is. I think i can get there. Okay it is over here boop for me. It is and just probably be able to speak to this a little bit more. I know he s. it's elevator It's it's sort of the next step. I feel like in what An ideal game could can be. If it's a it's one step of interactivity above idle games on. I feel like in the wild of idle vital. Share yeah go there. We go the breath of the wild games boom box. It's the same issue that auto chess had right like both. You just did a terrible job pitching the game. I can't do it either. It's the same auto chest. This was this big phenomenon and there is no good way to explain it without having people try it. I think there is still a demo available for what it's worth. It's on steam if people wanna try out at home but it is a very hard game to summarize and yet it does grab you pretty vicious stanley. Yeah yeah there's there's not that many sort of mechanics going on it's just i don't actually think idle game a good definition for this game. He's very active. Idle you are going to not very long at all where the game really kind takes off is understanding how all these different cards which represent the tiles you can place on the map like mountains or spider cocoons or rivers or all of these have effects that occasionally will interact with one. Another so for instance. There's a card called growth and when you put a grove on the map every two days it spawns a wolf enemy which sounds bad but you have to have enemies on the map in order to get better equipment and more cards to more fully. Fleshed your stuff out then. There's an additional car. Called a blood grow that you can only place next to a grove on the map. That will any any tile. It's touching if you get in a fight on that tile it'll automatically kill whatever monster you're fighting once it gets down to fifteen percent health and that includes bosses too so you wanna make sure you have a blood grove close to the camp tiles inset. We're the bosses are but if you put two blow gross together it'll make a hungry grove which will kill enemies at twenty percent health but also attack you. Sometimes that is. That's the i mean. I like but it's it's like that's the level of complexity that i feel like the game very very quickly dives into the only branches out from there as you upgrade your camp and therefore unlock new cards with which to to drop down on the map. There's also a lot of fun. Risk war type stuff way actually to touch on what government said. It also doesn't tell you this stuff isn't hand holy like so. I noticed that you can sit down meadows. That will heal you every loop and i noticed that some of my minnows were Like had flowers in them and we're healing for more And what she realizes that. If you put a meadow next to another object becomes a blooming meadow and that heels you for more but this isn't like explicitly stated to you so like things happen and you don't exactly know why that's part of the fun. The other thing is this fund risk reward of There's a couple of years. I've been one is how many bad things and we're gonna put down to make my run profitable but not kill myself right because if you put too much bad stuff doubt or this a lot early where i'm like would put several bad things next to each other and they'd all decide to hang out together so i'd wander room full of like seven people ready to like take me to town But there's also this question of windy you bail on a run so you can so you If you get back to town you can quit. Iran with one hundred percent of the stuff that you found if you die you get thirty percent of the stuff that you found if you just run away at any mid run. It's sixty percent so you do have to run some math in your head. Like i'm not gonna make it around again. I'm deaf. There's no way i'm gonna get get through. Ira bail right now. I am terrible making that call. I don't know about you guys. But i have made that. Call the worst possible decision. In that scenario every single time i might now i can make it and i never fucking russ can connect. Can i get in the the pitch elevator really quickly. Oh yeah being. oh so..

Yeah, they announced that that'll be gone. You don't need out get your fucking head out of the door. My dog just freaking out. Yeah. They're closing down. So it'll be it'll be interesting to see how everything changes when it comes to like coverage are not coverage I'm sorry but like you know The amount of amount of stuff you guys see on twitch and twitter and all that kind of. Then was just in the US right and my my writing. The closing and I from what I understand. Now as of yesterday, it said that the Department of like whatever is looking into ten cent and epochs relationship now to Yup. This morning if I remember, right? Yeah. So my assumption is you're gonNA see a lot of Shit especially because China has gone out of their way to continually fuck around in hack other people and all that you know Russia just claimed Venus is their own planet yesterday. And for a long period of time like you know. You'll hear people say, Oh, well, we used to do stuff. Yeah we did that doesn't mean you continue to do stuff like at at some point, you just have to be like we need to all stop I've a feeling with like Chinese companies and some weird shit that goes on with the hacking and stuff lot of these other nations are just getting tired of it and Tiktok just happens to be on it. So does epic contents yeah. I don't know what what'll happen there. It'll probably take a long time and it may be it may turn out to be nothing but we're global. Gaining global fucking phenomenon now. So it's like every every single nations rules are applying. You know something citizen sleep says he's claiming Pluto it's mine now. I lay claim on you. It's not a plan that anymore. Yeah. Yeah is to. Try to be try to be like a joker and even get the planet's wrong. Wasn't sleep at George. Wow Yes. Wow was was. Teacher in astronomy. That is true. A bit of a low blow but. Oh Yeah. Anyway what else do we got going on one of the crazy stuff? Oh, is anybody tried X. Cloud? Besides How? Does it work? Well, not great man it's not for me. All right. Let's hear. Let's hear your. I. Don't know if it's my local. Wifi. My own router. But of NYC at that signal where it's like we connection when I'm sitting right in front of Rather. So yeah, that's not the great. He's been the same for me. I it's been like. A lot of latency like my industry. May Have like a customer does like is not the one that I get from my. Provider but yeah. Thank you but yeah, it's been very immature may be if it's the region or something. Yeah. yard. So at aside are Amazon. No my service that I'm connecting to our in Amsterdam, which is realist regionally. Regionally. The closest to me like five feet away. Hey It's Zero. Just like. Normal right like comcast like there's no I, don't have a special router I do have a Side router to do some wireless and stuff, but that's not but this is on and mine has been spotless so far. But admittedly, I also have had perfect streaming with. With Google or with a g force now and all that too. So it can if anybody's had issues with G. Force now at assume you would have issues with with x play or X. Cloud. But yeah, it's been. It's been perfection like to me in the last couple of days I've been playing and I have to say there has not been a time where it has felt. Not Local, which is weird. Now, admittedly, I haven't done like a four. But I have done a career games. Now I think about it but it's been. It's it's so weird and it'll never nothing's a replacement for local right nothing's ever or A. Local in that instance, nothing's replacement for the hardware. It just won't be however that being said. The Games I chose are pretty intelligent. Out there I'm not like it's not a latency test game where you're just testing the latest single like it's off to. I've been playing games that I would play and out fuck man it's just it's so weird and it's a great ad like. It's a as an ad. It's also something like a register Colo could go and be like, okay it's added. It's not like the only way so I'll test and see what works in maybe I'm in this spot or maybe in this spot and if don't want to, you're not losing anything really by not doing it, it's not like you know you're losing money. But luckily for me it's been. It's mind again, G. Force now is though too I wanna make sure that's clear. I've really happy lately with G. Force adverts now worked for me because I think well, the PC, by just riding on the PC and let's not going Wi fi. So that's why I said maybe it's my own advert the welcome. Okay Dude I am so excited to try this. Can I can I do this guys? Can I play slay the spire on my tab? I have like a big Samsung Galaxy Tab can I play it? They're using exe cloud and then use like. "Objectivity and almost that team mindset sets in and that's perfectly fine. For Athletics, it's understandable. I shouldn't say it's fine. It's very understandable. The same thing happens in politics where you put on the Jersey of your team and your cheering for your team. No matter what. And so because of that, there are certain coalitions that in June. Team Democrat and team Republican. Basically were forced to support. Team Democrat decided become the Anti Police Party team Republican was the pro-police Party and it's not that Republicans were not the pro-police Party. It's actually that Democrats actually always used to win the police votes and because that the Democrats have actually decided that they no longer want to be the police party Republicans fell backwards into being the pro-police Party. Now, the Democrats were happy to see this because in early June there was widespread condemnation police mostly because the videos that came out from Derek shelvin putting his knee on George Floyd resulting the death George Floyd. and. So the Democrats were really happy to see Republicans embrace law and order embraced law enforcement and embrace. Police officers, however as the riots, the looting and the terrorism continued the Democrats slowly and very slowly I have to say this was not sudden. They were not aware or alert. In fact I think they were far too focused on lockdowns and masks, and the Democrats did not realize that there is real suffering and terror and safety concerns happening all across the industrial midwest that when decent reasonable swing voters especially in the suburbs in the mid west started to be filled with fear, which is understandable when be INC as a terror campaign all across the Midwest, they retreat. Quickly to the party that is known as the pro-police Party. So almost as a pendulum unintentionally, it's at the Republicans design this it was an unintentional stroke of political luck. Where the crisis that happened with decent and reasonable Americans. As soon as I said, we want more safety they looked around they said, wait who runs the police party again, that's the Republicans. Let's go vote for them, and this is exactly why we have seen Donald trump have a double digit boost since mid-july something that political prognosticators pundits thought to be nearly impossible where this race stands today defies the laws of political. All of a sudden became the dominant news story. The last couple of days don lemon was the straw that broke the camel's back. We've been trying to have conversation riots and looting and arson. For months now. And in a very unusual. Very Ironic Way BE ELLEN INC which in early June became the nemesis of president trump's reelection campaign, which became very difficult for Republicans to wrestle with. Because Blm, INC actually was given power. And was given credibility people saw who they really were. They saw that they wanted to start a race war in this country they saw that they wanted to destroy the western prescribe nuclear family. And instead of beal unincorporated, building a sustainable political movement, which were very well could have one hundred seats in Congress and had sixty to seventy percent approval rating. Now, I don't like doing the I told you so thing but we did call this before anybody else last Tuesday evening. When I said Joe Biden is in come out and blame the rights in the arson on Donald Trump. The moment I saw Don Lemon say what he said I said Joe Biden's into come out and deflect and do the Orwellian gas lighting projection. Talk more about with gas lighting means later in this whole podcast coming out on that because the very important term everybody understands. We're trying to answer the question of whether loot crates are gambling or not right and I got the help of a woman who is a video game player and a- gambling expert but she claims not a- gambler herself. I'm not a dopamine rush Kinda girl I'm cautious and nerdy and numbers oriented for them. Nursery Evidence Leeann our runs the Center for gambling studies at Rutgers University the center studies gambling its intersection with the Internet and video game technology and how to treat people develop gambling addiction. You Know I did my dissertation Haitian years ago on kids that develop gambling problems and what we found was that significant proportion had apparent who gambled at problematic levels so in New Jersey we have a lot of race tracks and they have family day picnic this picnic that so you trundle along at five years old with your dad your GRANDPA APO- everybody's having so much fun then you go back and pretty soon you're sort of immersed in that culture and it becomes what you perceive to be a harmless family activity tippety and for most people it is harmless but it can be addictive and Leah defines gambling like this gambling is basically a betting money on an outcome of random chance. You're willing to put up money with the hope that you're GonNa win more but you may lose all your money in this sounds a lot like what you're doing. When you buy a lewd crate random chance spending money with the possibility of getting nothing of value value in return and while it's true that there's a really broad spectrum of loot crates in different video games and a broad spectrum of how players can or can't trade cell or resell what they get in a loot crate generally speaking loot crates are represented by video game companies as having value? Why else would would you buy one? It's the mystery part that gets tricky. Leah and her colleague Vivian Anthony did a whole study on gambling and luke boxes forty six percent of those who played video games also bought loot boxes and among the loot box players they were significantly more likely to also have gambling problems indoor door problems with video gaming says that what hasn't been established is whether or not loot crates are a gateway to gambling. There's a high level of correlation between in the two but we don't know if one leads to the other also the United States hasn't yet defined loot crates as a form of gambling and Lee has scientists interests can't really do that work. It has to be done by the government. Take the analogy from daily fantasy sports those of us in the field think daily fantasy sports gambling blink but you know the higher courts say no. It's not you know the the Legislation Says No. It's not so somebody in a position of regulatory or legislative authority has got to really clearly start to define these boundaries or not. Do you think that's going to happen. You know I'm not sure I think in some countries that have much more rigorous policing of anything that could be related to a gambling activity yes in countries like the United States where it's very market driven and capitalistic and its orientation. It may be a ways off politicians in the US are talking about regulation. Though people like Republican senator of Missouri Josh Holly Early He's targeting gaming companies because he says loot boxes separate impressionable kids from their money and they get the kids addicted to the game. This needs to stop. They need to be up front about what their games are actually doing and they need to stop practices that intentionally exploited children.

"Issue with that that sort of didn't work out. I met my wife fence. The monk thinks I'm sorry for your loss yeah and the joke that I made during my med school interviews and she wanted wanted to be married to a doctor so here I am here who is so my name is all Okinawa jam a psychiatrist. I'm faculty at Harvard Medical School. I work at Mclean Hospital and most of what I do in my day job is actually addiction psychiatry and more recently like technology addiction psychiatry. The reason although has made the transition transition from monk to technology addictions Kaya Trust is not just because of his own problems or his partner wanting to marry a doctor a year ago he posted posted on Reddit offering to answer people's questions as a psychiatrist interested in Video Game Addiction. He got a massive response. His post hit the front page people in Saudi Arabia were calling the hospital he worked at asking for him because their kids are addicted to video games so started getting requests from like South Korea Korea like the UK Europe while the Middle East and then quickly realized after. I got probably over a thousand requests for help in twenty I four hours. That is an individual clinician. There's no way that I can just help. All these people like I just can't do it alone. His wife started a service called Healthy Gamer. It's it's meant to help people with video gaming addiction and it employs people who know video gaming in the hopes of bridging the gap to families and kids who are struggling with video game overload but not necessarily to kick video games cold Turkey we sort of learn about addictions like we have a good sense of addictions but most of those addictions are substance use disorders orders right meaning about heroin or cocaine or alcohol and heroin and cocaine and alcohol or biological molecules that traveled to one part of our brain and and then affected in a very specific way whereas video games engage us on so many different levels video games give us a sense of accomplishment they give us a sense of identity. They give give us a sense of community. I work with Gamers who say I can't stop playing a video game. I have no control over my life. I WANNA kill myself and I also so here. Gamers say my parents are abusive. you know one of my parents is an alcoholic. I get bullied at school if it weren't for you guys his Gamer friends I would've killed myself a year ago so I think the reason that video games were so addicting is because they satisfy basic psychological needs that we have you know envision a a fifteen year old who's got acne is a little bit overweight and gets bullied at school but on the Internet he can be whatever he wants to be God of war so to speak yeah right interesting and people don't judge him for the way he looks right so one of the big challenges that I have is an explaining to parents that when you take away child's video game like what are you taking being away from them or are you taking away their friends. Are you taking their community. Are you taking away their sense of self so it sounds to me like you're advocating for making making that relationship with video games more healthy not necessarily ending the relationship yeah absolutely so I think that's why you know we founded healthy Gamer dot G for that unreason. Alex Startup Offers Courses Remedies coaching. Some of the company's offerings are free but others come at a price. "Okay sound here aw there like different settings but they have similar vibes. There's almost like a a similar underlying melody in both of them yeah and does the melody feel like almost like anticipatory like oh uh-huh revelatory. Maybe revelatory is the word yeah. I don't think I would have classified it as revelatory but there's definitely something I I'd mm classified as like a little unsettling to me. Okay Yeah I'll take unsettling OK sold unsettling all right any guesses as of what these kind of similar sounds are they're. They're scenes from video games. So one is the sound of the floor of a casino. Okay Fola slot machines you ever played a slot machine. You pull the lever I have so the second sound is a lucrative see to me these T. She sounds pretty similar. They both have that kind of so. The reason I'm asking you this is that there's this huge debate that has been playing out across the world over the last few years about whether loot crates are a form of gambling gambling okay because gambling is for really good reasons highly regulated loot crates inside video games are not and their founding games played by a lot of teenagers agers. Yeah a luke crate is like really defined as this thing that you buy a video game that has incited a bunch of digital digital goodies in some of these goodies are just for fun but some of them ended up having real value for video game players either by helping them do better than the game itself Alflex more powerful gear whatever or just being rare and cool enough to be traded or sold on a secondary black market two other gamers. Remind me why care about luke creates again trick question you do not care about lucrative clearly. This is true. I do not care about loot crates. What if I told you that our Lou crate story has a connection to star wars? I'm listening and also fifty billion dollar Jackpot for the video Jio game industry lot of money and also emory. What if I said that cracker Jack's are involved all right? I do like popcorn in all its forms Ormes. Also what if I told you it had something to do with how US humans have evolved and survived. What if I brought you the science of Luke crates you know you've been talking about this for months so I think you finally get your loot eight episodes Ben Congratulations yes? I'm Ben Brock Johnson. I'm Anne Marie and you're listening to endless thread the show featuring stories found in the vast ecosystem of online communities called read it. We're coming to you from. WB You are Boston's NPR station today's episode loot crates okay emory that Luke create sound. I played for you at the top of the episode so I recorded that Luke great sound with the help of a guy named Sa- hill parikh twitch name Kanga underscore ru R. O. U. X. Do you know what twitch streamers I do. They play Games and talk to other the people while they're playing games on the the twitch forum yeah well done thank you so he'll basically broadcast his game play and other people watch shit and they all talk to each other about it so see hill sat down to buy luke with me on his laptop which is a laptop specifically designed for playing video games James slogging in and also he has one of the game's most famous or infamous for selling loot crates. It's called Overwatch. This is a game aim that even I have heard of the last official count I saw said that overwatch had forty million players around the world emory. Apparently you've heard of it but you're not one of those players. There's no and I'm also not one of those players but say Hilas. Sahel's sounds like the real deal. I gotta say but I hope you at least paid him back for the lewd crate. I did reimburse him Suheil. I'M GONNA give you ten dollars all right and you can get your laptop if you so choose and so this is in the video game well. It's almost like next door to the lobby of the video game so over watches what's called a team based first person shooter game emory which I know you play lots of these games lots of really fast paced action between players but when you're not actually playing the game you can buy loot crates. It's almost like going to the pro shop for tennis or golf or something. Does that make sense yeah uh-huh like if they can't see it you at a restaurant they tried to get you to spend extra money at the bar. I accept unlike a lot of other video game marketplace purchases where you've got lots of options for specific acidic things you can buy in the loot crates area overwatch. You can only buy one mysterious thing it's kind of like a futuristic looking box with like glittery light shooting out of the cracks in the box yeah and it says it says open loop box and shop. That's what I'm hoping to hear that extra sound there tells me I got an even more rare item. You're buying a thing but you can't see what's inside of it. You can't touch it. You can't engage with it in any way. Why would you do this yeah? It's pretty risky right but loot crates or Lou boxes sixes aren't as far out as they might seem. They're based on this really very basic. Premise rolling the dice taking a chance on something and in the late eighteen hundreds for instance you could get trading cards in your cigarette pack. It does kind of remind me of trading cards because you could buy a pack without knowing what you're getting yeah and Hill Hill made the same point I always compared to just in the sense that you can sell baseball cards for quite a lot. If you get the right rare cards I sometimes get a twenty dollar card to get a fifty dollar card one hundred it all card. Hey I just made hundred bucks. This is where the cracker Jack's come in too because you're buying something and there's the mystery price yeah but that doesn't quite work because I always know what I'm getting with cracker. Jack's you know I'm getting a snack and I get this little prize or whatever on the aside but it's definitely not going to have a resale value of one hundred dollars but what if it did value is in the eyes of this spender right imagine a world world where a whole bunch of people thought those crackerjack prizes were worth paying for this is by design. This is why loot crates are huge part of how many video games aims make money now loot crates are a big business. We're talking a projected fifty billion dollars in sales per year as part of the overall video game business by two thousand twenty two so this reminds me of a game I am familiar with fortnight global video game phenomenon. The game is free but people bill by outfits and other things that customized Avatar or their character in the game and that games revenue in two thousand eighteen was something like a billion dollars a free free game one billion dollars in revenue amazing but perceived value can get you in trouble. So are we going to talk about some of the red at threads now oh yeah yeah so when I knew we were going to be talking about loot crates. I went on read it and I found a lot of threads on this subject people talking about being addicted to video games talking about their challenges of being addicted to video games. That's a whole genre of read it posts. There's one from six months ago titled. I have a gambling addiction loop boxes. His are very detrimental to me from a user who says they spent one thousand dollars of real money on these digital boxes another user on read it said that back in twenty any seventeen they spent ten thousand dollars on these types of in game purchases crazy yep and just in case anyone is listening to this and thinking. Hey don't tell me about video game addiction when they're real addiction problems in the world. I just want to underscore this is dead serious. People have lost jobs partners developed other addictions they say came from their video game addiction South Korea you may have heard emory and do you know about this no they enforce a national video game game curfew between the hours of midnight and six. Am for kids under sixteen and that yes and that is because gaming addiction is an epidemic Emma Can South Korea gaming addiction may not be at that level here in the US but the use of loot crates does potentially connected to the national numbers on gambling addiction in which is estimated to be between two and five percent of the population. Maybe more following a relaxation of gambling restrictions in states around the country but you've found editor right here in Boston who can speak to video game addiction a sympathetic narrator if you will I did so I struggled with video game addiction myself in high school and in college had less than two point Oh. GPA after two years of college and was really directionless and I actually ended up going to India and staying at an Ashram for one summer and decided to become a monk in studied kind of on that path for about seven in years because video games originally yeah spoiler. This guy is not a monk he ran into a little.
