Rice, Allen lead No. 10 Texas over No. 11 Baylor 76-71

"Texas is alone atop the big 12 after it defeated feisty Baylor's 76 71 longhorns forward, Timmy Allen. Yeah, that's just kind of what this league is about, you know, you got to put your head on and come to work every day. A lot of credit to them. That was one of the hardest games I've played in since I've been here. I'm not gonna lie. Down 74 71, the bears chianti, George had a chance to tie the game with a three ball, but missed UT is in first place at 7 and two. After its 6 game win streak was snapped, Baylor falls to 5 and four in conference play. I'm Bruce Morton

We knew that. We're going to have to work this game for 40 minutes. I thought our guys, this was a really good team win. The longhorns improved to 16 and three, Dylan D Sue finished with 13 points before fouling out while Christian bishop and tyrese hunter each added 11 points. "And innovation forward. Now davin raby all right, sandy college football local teams get going later this afternoon, but among the early starts nationally a good game in Austin, Texas top ranked Alabama and the Texas longhorns tied at ten at halftime, longhorns having just a 20 yard field goal at the end of the first half, coming up at three 30, both Maryland and navy in action, terrapins visiting Charlotte. It's the terps look to open the year with a second straight win. Meanwhile, at the naval academy, they call them BO plays and it has nothing to do with personal hygiene BO. It's an acronym the midshipman use for beat ourselves. They include self inflicted wounds on the field like penalties and turnovers that could ultimately make for a long day and last week's season opening loss to Delaware. Navy guilty of three turnovers in the first half that was far too much stench for head coach, Kenya mantila. Let's say we can do as much as it hurts, you know, get enough to that start last week. There's nothing you can do about it. All you can do is watch tape, look at yourself, be critical of yourself, and come back and get ready, but that's the mantra right now that I just want to know. Navy taking on Memphis at three 30 in the conference opener for both schools and that is game one of a sports double header on 1500 a.m.. It will be followed by the nationals and Phillies game two of their weekend series in Philadelphia's announced lick to snap a two game losing streak soccer at Audi field this afternoon the Washington spirit taking on San Diego. "You there? Yeah, so are you, why would you sound like Nick Saban? Oh, I don't know. I was listening to your other calling. Oh, okay. I got a question, though. Texas a and M in Alabama. If you were a betting man who would you bet on? Alabama. Okay. Yeah, I don't know. I think I'm going to go with Texas a and M. Okay. Well, you're welcome to and you'll probably be able to grab a few points because there'll be likely a two touchdown or more underdog. Right. Yeah, I was hoping that I'm sitting here with a couple buddies from work. So shout out to Brian and Mike. But hey, I just wanted to get your question on that and go hogs. Well, great to hear from you. Thank you, Jess. Is up next in auburn. Hello, Jess. Hey, I was just calling in to talk about Robbie Ashford and see what you thought about him this Saturday and his debut in auburn. I'm really impressed by him and I remember the first call we first conversation we had on him was way back with pat Smith who did some of his games in high school and ultimately it looks like he's trending toward the auburn signal caller. He's capable, does he have enough around him, I think, is ultimately the question other than Tang, bigsby. Agree to agree. Do you think he's going to start above CJ family this year? Yeah, well, I think he will at some point, yeah, but right now I think you just have to let him play out. I know that sounds rather pedestrian, but Brian Harrison's a really smart offensive coach and I don't think he swung for the fences on calzada and he found out that that wasn't the answer. So he simply trying to deal with what's left. Let's take a break. We still have two hours to go. It's been a busy one with Reese Davis. We have Greg mcelroy next. "Daryl is up next. I'm calling in is because I'm gonna make my state my case on what I said and just clear it up, okay? What I said was Paul, I mean, look here. It's okay to come by to have an opinion. Let's call you don't agree with it. Doesn't mean it's okay to go calling somebody dunk. You never call to your gas like that, but you told your callers like that. There's a why is that? I mean, why is it that lack of respect on one side? I mean, I don't get it. But here's the deal, okay? I've been calling your show for 12 years. 12 years. I'll be calling your show. When you dedicate anything to when you got 12 years in business, there is a lot of respect that you should get from that, okay? If you're working for it, our serving of decent person, there's a lot of respect. You will always get. Regardless of if you're employer or whatever it is. And how many kids, you don't have to agree with you're not always, right? I heard you might talk about football predictions. You're wrong, okay? Just a prediction. Right, it was. You made it the prediction. You were wrong about how many of your DOM, but I mean, let me, what I said, but it ain't something an opinion, really. I heard it come out of real mustache mouth. I heard, let me tell you something. When I call in, okay, stuff that I blow them out. You can always bet one thing. I do my homework first. I'm not gonna go into the national platform and just run my mouth about something I don't know about. I'm gonna always put my homework and make sure what I'm saying is accurate. You need to fact check it. But I mean, this just took three people to treat you balls. There's no need and calling people dumb and in that kind of stuff. You're the only out of all the hosts that I've ever listened to on the radio. And I can name a bunch of them. I'll probably be a hundred or more, okay? I've never heard one of them refer to any caller as being dumb and you said even worse things. I mean, you know, maybe it was Labor Day and you didn't want to work. I don't know. Maybe that's what it was. That's not my fault though. You know what I mean? I mean, Blake metal ESPN, but you really can't be blaming all this pain because you make cleaning your money to head to what you do. And you know that. But why would park on somebody do them over somebody like that? I mean, am I wrong here? Well, first of all, Daryl, I will stand on my record in dealing with callers. I will also say that in the course of a conversation, things can get heated. I try not to do that. And maybe because of familiarity, I felt like I could just go a little bit deeper in the conversation with you, but I in no way am I trying to suggest Darryl that you are dumb. Oh, well, I know I'm not doing. I mean, you know, I didn't want to go here, but I will. I'm an out. Think you've been down to grow before, right? Some guy tried to sue you over some of his hands. I'm not going to say what you said, but you know, and he won the court case on it, okay? And I know that, but still. Are you going to see me over me calling you dumb? No, I'm not going to play yet. I'm not going to play. That would be quite a lawsuit. By the way, do you realize when you see somebody, you have to prove that you're not dumb? Say it again? I said, if you sued me over that, then you would have to bring experts in to prove that you're not dumb. Well, you're funny, Paul. Wow. Then we could get a bunch of experts and try to say that you are. I mean, I don't want to do that Daryl, but you're the one throwing around lawsuits. You both got to vote for the top 25, right? I do not. Oh, I thought you did. Okay. You got to vote for the highs and though, right? I do. Okay, I know you've got a vote for one of the two. I don't understand how Georgia, okay? We can move out the number two and cut the votes like. I think we were a hundred behind Alabama. Now we're like 46 behind Alabama. Okay, I mean, you can move George up the number two, put that drop, Oregon, completely out of car 25. I mean, that makes no sense to me. How can you move one up? It was obviously a real good job, but you see what I'm saying? Does that make you sad? Well, I think the reason Utah excuse me Oregon got voted out is they lost by nearly 50 points. Well, I know that, but I mean, we'll move to Georgia, and that was impressive win, but then you gonna drop a team that far down the pole. It doesn't really matter. Those polls don't matter either way, the only one that matters November. I heard what you said was Stephen a pole. And all I gotta say about that is, I mean, you start to sound like Nick Saban now. You know what I mean? You don't need to sound like Nick Saban. That's exactly who you were sounding like. Do you understand the purpose of that show I was on? Paul, we were trying to get Alabama to lose, not win, okay? Yeah. Okay. So Daryl is not, is he or is he not going to see me over me insinuating that he's not smart? I don't know. I'm glad he called. I felt like it. Was that good? We all good? Is that by going to be bygones? I wonder, can I use Labor Day as a defense? And it wasn't a matter of not wanting to be here yesterday. We're always here on Labor Day. That's not like oh, hey, you have to work on Christmas Day. We are here every year on Labor Day. Why are we here on Labor Day? Because it's the first Monday of the college football season. Now, glad we got that cleared up. Brady is in Arkansas. Hello, Brady. Hey, how you doing? Brady, we are doing well. Thank you. I hope I don't sound like Nick Saban.

"Prizes on radio shows. So you have to time it as a call is ending. If you're dialing the number, you're likely going to be the caller calling in right then. Well, now you said Daryl quit the show. Daryl, I was Daryl Daryl is not afraid to make all kinds of inflammatory and disgusting remarks about other people. But he got upset because I said he had a stupid take when he made when he made reference to the fact that if that will must happen and Mike Bobo are going to work harder now that they're on the staff at Georgia, that makes sense. That's more inspiring. And my argument was harder than when they were head coaches at South Carolina and Florida and Colorado state, all three places where they got fired. I said, that's a stupid take. Some of the stupidest takes I've ever heard, he took it personally because Daryl is the kind of guy that can call me an idiot. Make some inflammatory. And I'm not going to use a narrow characterization, but most people know when Daryl is talking about certain things. What exactly he is saying, I don't need to spell it out, nor do I want to. And he got his feelings hurt and he cried and went home and sucking on his pacifier and hoping that his mother will comfort him. Well, whenever I've seen his new picture, because I didn't call for a while to watch the show for a little while, but when I started watching the show again, seeing a new picture, I thought he had a terminal disease. Well, he does. And again, you know, I respect Daryl. He's a retired marine and he served this country and my army, man. I'm an army man. So I started mine too. I'm glad you did. But that's no reason to be treated differently. We're also going to amen. And he and his buddy and Tuscaloosa can go into the corner and cry. Yeah, they do that pretty regular. I just wanted to call let you know it's hard to get it is hard when I got a rotary dial phone, but it still works for me. So I don't understand. Because does it work as well as a normal phone? We're not a normal phone. A newer phone, I should say. It's quicker. It gives me right into the phone, and I don't know why, but when the guys in the back see my number, they just let me go ahead. So I don't know if it's a different or special, but I have not seen it. I really appreciate it. I have not seen a rotary dial phone in many, many years. I've got two in my house. I may get one. Yeah, they're faster. I like those. Thank you. You remember those old black ones? You kind of, um. Anyway, David is up next in Florida hello, David. Hey, Paul, how are you doing this? We're doing well. Thank you. So I attended the Utah Florida game. That's why my voice that was a part of the team I felt like there was 90,799 fans there in the swamp. And you saw there, I know it was a home game for us, but I think Florida has a real shot behind Georgia and the east and I'm wondering your thoughts on how we played on how we played Utah. I know Tennessee has Pittsburgh coming up, but I want to mark the calendars to that Tennessee Florida game because I'm to call it now, man. I like sport over Tennessee and I'm still, I'm just going to say, I don't think Tennessee has a defense to contain Anthony Richardson. And without that, it's going to be a high scoring game and us go Gators and all that good stuff. We still hyped up some. Well, yeah, but David, let me flip it around and I realized the Florida defense won the game at the end. And you can't take anything away from that. It was a massive play, but against a good quarterback. But what is Florida's defense going to do against hindon hooker? Well, that's my question now. We do have on sale Miller returning. You very impactful. He had a couple of tackles for losses. I'm just kind of hoping that with maybe some momentum built up because you do have a night game in the swamp again this Saturday with Kentucky, hoping for a good W out of that, preparing for Tennessee. Well, maybe just give them boys just a little bit more, you know, they'll settle in the trenches a little bit more and be a little bit more focused than they would last year, 'cause I believe the team was there last year, how we played Alabama. And just with the coaching and everything, it just came on spiraled in an everyday everything just came undone and I'm giving Napier a lot of credit for kind of putting those pieces back in the place that we're already there. So let's just kind of see where, you know, if we can hang in tight against Kentucky, I think we'll be okay because I watched from my own eyes the fumble and nobody on that floor to sideline at the very beginning of the game when we fumbled and Utah picked that ball up, nobody on that floor to sidelines with their hands on their helmet or was like, oh man, here we go again, here are confident they stood in there. They had a very good mental toughness to them Saturday against the very good Utah team. So that's fantastic. Hey, thank you for the call. James is up next in Kansas. Hey, James. Hey, how are you, mister van, mom? We are doing great. Thank you for calling. Good. I am a lifelong razorback fan. And if Sam Pittman runs for governor tomorrow, I'd move back down there and vote. But what are your thoughts as far as the future stability of the program with the portal and with the pieces that they're bringing in? And so on. And also, do you think that they have a good chance to be a contender or the SEC title game in the next couple of years if the program stays on its current trajectory? James, I do. And having spent the weekend in Fayetteville, I feel like I've got a decent understanding of what's happening out there. That is as well run an athletic department, as I've seen in the whole country under hunter year check and I think that that's where it all begins. There's tremendous support in that northwest Arkansas area across the state. And that's what you need. And it's always been there, but the coaching selections and the leadership in the AD's office has been shaky until recently. And that is now cleared up, and I think Sam Pittman is the right time for the right for this moment.

"Resurface today after being in missing and the witness protection program for the last 9 months. He spoke in Little Rock Arkansas, our friend David basil's group, and he said, they came into me and they said, coach, you've got 17.1 million on your contract. We're going to give it to you. I said, what time do you want me to leave? What door do you want me out of brother? He said a lot more than that. You got a big laugh, and good for him. He basically walked out with $17 million. And he's the first coach I've ever heard that made a joke out of his firing in that regard, but you know what? If these guys here owed me $17 million, you ready to go? Keith? Danny, you've already? Danny, go ahead and bring the car around, okay? I don't want to waste any time. Arthur is up next in San Francisco. Paul wanted to talk playoff expansion deprived by the details announced last week, I'll tell you why. I thought we were moving towards two super conferences and if you weren't in the SEC for the Big Ten, you weren't in the top tier of college football. But if you look at the details, not only does it give access to four conferences guaranteed, but those top four spots, each conference can only have one school. So these other conferences, the ACC, the big 12, the PAC 12, I thought they were on life support. Why did Greg thank you do this? It seems like he's throwing them a bone. Well, there's about two and a half billion reasons why they're going to do it. You're going to see the biggest college sports contract ever come out of this. And by the way, the question really is, should these networks be spending as much money? Because they thought they were getting the super comp. They were entering the super conference era. Especially the Big Ten and you're right. This does bring everyone back to the playing field, so to speak, but still, you can get into the playoffs, but the value of your league is still been severely diminished. Do you think that this means that sort of a Big Ten SEC only semifinals was just going to be too hard to pull off in the short term? I mean, I think numbers, numbers matter, I'm not an analytic expert, but if the SEC has four in the 12 and the Big Ten has three, the math is pretty easy. Yeah, I agree. And one last thought, I think this actually ends up being great for the premier bull. I mean, we got to the point where Ohio State players were skipping the rose bowl last year, which used to be unheard of. And maybe being a quarterfinal isn't as good as the rose bowl used to be. But at least if you're one of these top 6 polls, you know you're going to have an important game being played at your site. So I think that's a win. Yeah, you know, author, the dynamics are going to change dramatically. I mean, right now, if you're at a middle of the packer, getting to a bowl game matters, maybe getting to a good bowl game. If you sneak into the playoffs, you can live off of that for a long time. But everything will be different now. And I'm not sure we don't know how it's going to be because we don't know when it's going to be, but you better get in the playoffs, so if you're a big time program, and I don't think that the number 13 team is going to draw nearly the attention as the number 5 team, we make a big deal about it in college, basketball. Well, primarily Dick Vitale makes a big deal about it. Nobody else cares who the last team they got left out of the tournament is. Absolutely. Thanks Paul. Thanks, Ari, good to hear from you. Phil is up next in North Carolina. Good afternoon. Hey Paul. Good to have football games going on to see what you got going on. Absolutely. Yeah. I think Paul that there are a lot of teams and a lot of players and a lot of quarterbacks that are very intimidated going up against Alabama and it gets dry Shaw. And I think stetson Bennett is not one of them. And there's two reasons one he played in a game that was a defensive struggle that went down into the fourth quarter with everything on the line. He came down to those moments where one quarter of the team has been a win as the team that had the quarterback to make the plays and the fewest mistakes. That's a bit it made all the plays right showing made all the mistakes. Secondly, he not worried about Alabama. The hardest extents invented has had to deal with was winning over his own fan base. And I think he's finally getting that done. But after going through that, he doesn't care who calls him an elf on the shell or a midget. What those other fan bases have to say about him. He's upstairs. He didn't look scared Saturday, did he fall? No, and I don't think he's going to because he's the oldest person on the field. He's got tremendous experience. He's overcome everything. And no matter what happens, he has already made it. And that was some of the arguments I heard for him leaving, but he wasn't done, and good for him. Nobody can tell somebody as long as they're able to keep going, that they have to leave something that they love and enjoy doing. Thank you very much for the call. Bubba is in North Carolina. Hello, bubba. Oh, we're at a rare moment in time right now, the Vanderbilt Commodore has had the best record the entire ACC. Yeah, that's amazing. Yeah, it may actually last one more week if they can handle it for us, but I want to give a shout out to my old boy, black had a Elvis area. He was talking about Stanton Bennett, said he was doing more stuff. I'm telling you the little apricot look pretty sharp, Saturday. He sure did. Bruce is up next in Florida. Hey Bruce. Hey, Paul, how are you doing? We're doing great. Thank you. Don't you get tired of that question being asked, every caller? No, because every caller is different. And it's not like you were talking to the same person. So. It is perfectly fine with me. Well, I get tired of hearing all these colors fussing about how hard it is to get into your show. Don't make no sense to me. It's not that difficult. You can call it 7 o'clock the day but the night before and be on hold for 20 hours, you'll definitely get on. But what I do when I call the guys in the back they recognize my number and they used to put me on through. Bruce, that's the secret. There's also a way and it's hard to do if you're watching on a delay, but as somebody is hanging up, this is just a tip. We used to do this when we were in college.

"Paul, how are you? Very well, Zach. Hey, I just wanted to ask you what you thought about the auburn tigers this year. You know how to have 5 home games coming at home. I just want to see if you thought we would have a chance to go farther now to start off the season and see what the outlook looked like for the rest of the year. Yeah, Zach, I think it's possible. When you start looking at the schedule and thinking about what we thought about a few weeks ago, it's more realistic. Penn State's always been the key game. Getting by Penn State, I think opens the door. There's Missouri and I believe LSU. So that's one thing that the first week of the season does, it starts giving you reason to recalibrate and right now, I would think auburn assuming it can figure out this quarterback situation could has a shot at running that table and should they go 5 or no wow. The whole harsh in conversation changes. Brian Robinson played at Texas went on and starred in the NFL and is part of the LongHorn network as everybody getting ready for Austin. This weekend. And Alabama visiting Brian. Good afternoon. Thank you for joining us. How is everything? Everything is great, how are you doing? We're doing okay. Well, tell us about the longhorns because everybody is wondering shark lowered the expectations, many are predicting an absolute beat down. What's the feeling out there? Yeah, I think after you watch the first game, the Texas long runs came out much more aggressive this year, which is definitely something that was wanted to be seen, especially on defense. They played very well up front this week against what many will say in inferior opponent and ULL, but it definitely gives the Texas long more faithful hope coming into this game a little bit. Well, give us a breakdown because certainly everyone knows about the quarterback when yours and what he's capable of doing, let's start there. What are your impressions of him so far? You know, obviously opening the game up with the mistake that he had early on, we wanted to see how he would react. And he did a great job of coming back out there and really and truly leading this football team and that's one of the questions behind him was the leadership aspect how he would be able to react with those mistakes and what we saw out of him was him going to cylon staying even keel and bringing his team back out there and doing a job that he needed to do to get done. Brian is the number one player coming out a year ago. We all know where he went and now that he's back. What makes him so unique? Honestly, the first thing that sticks out with him is his arm strength. When he's able to throw the ball down the field, I mean, he's got an arm that can compete with anybody in the country. I've seen it in the spring game. I've seen it during spring practices. I mean, with very little effort, he's throwing a 55, 60 yards in the air. So that is something that definitely puts him apart. Now the flip side of that is the accuracy that he can have downfield. We saw last week against you that he overthrew some guys. I'm hoping that with time that he will be able to kind of die out there and a little bit. And if he is, then he gives Texas a great opportunity to score some points. We're talking to Brian, by the way, if your kids show up in the school line, don't let us stop you. We do not want to disappoint the youngest. How many of you are waiting for right now? I got two of them picking up. My daughter, my son. Okay, well, we will try to squeeze as much out of you as possible before they start running to the car. Expectations is a big part of football and Texas has not had great success lately. But Alabama is in a different league, at least perceptively. How does this game stay interesting if you're on the Texas sideline? I know that's not the goal. The goal is to win, but that's not the expectation, though, for most people who are pundits. Well, I think when you look at it from a defensive aspect, the defensive line has to be very aggressive like they were last week. They're going to have to get against get up against this offensive line of Alabama that to me, watching them on film has not quite jailed yet. So that may be the one emphasis that could give us an opportunity is to be able to get after Bryce young and be able to be aggressive, maybe blitz some on first down, try to get them behind the chains and give them the best opportunity to put them in some third and long situations. Offensively, I think we have to create a mismatch with what I think is arguably one of the best running back rooms in the country with the Texas longhorns on the Alabama's linebackers. If we can get some involvement with bijan in the screen game, rochon being able to get out on the edges as well. That may give them an opportunity to be able to create some first downs, march down the field and put up some points. You mentioned bijan and certainly he has been one of the best running backs in the country for a while. You've seen a lot in your time, how do you describe him and as he moves on? What is he capable of down the road? I think he's capable of a lot. I mean, a guy that I spent a lot of time with that I would compare him to as a guy like Adrian Peterson. He's got size, speed, power, agility. I mean, he's really got it all. And to me, I think sky's the limit for him. It's just a matter of, and in my opinion, he probably is a Heisman finalist guy if Texas can win some ball games this year. So I think sky's the limit for him, I think he's got a bright bright future ahead of him. Listen, thank you. I realize you're in a tight squeeze there, but we appreciate Brian, you're coming on board here. I hope your kids get to the car safely, and we will talk to you soon. Thank you very much. Officials Urge Killing of Invasive Spotted Lanternfly

"If you live on the east coast of the us especially in new york or pennsylvania and see a visually striking spotted lantern fly. The state governments would like you to forget any humane ideas about carefully moving it from one spot to another and instead to immediately kill it the spotted lantern fly is an invasive pest that is not native to the us and apparently is threatening to over seventy of the plant species that feeds on feeds on meaning draining sap and leaving them weakened and vulnerable to disease among those species. Is the atlantis autism or tree of heaven which the new york times points out is best known as the tree from betty. Smith's nineteen forty-three novel. A tree grows in brooklyn but this pernicious beast who has delicate grey wings spotted in black with a bonus set of bright red wings also spotted with black underneath. I arrived in the us from asia seven years ago and entered new york city last year. During the pandemic environmentalists ecologists are encouraging people to kill the bugs site because they have no natural predators here and no organic pesticides that can take them out here. New york the department of agriculture is additionally asking people to submit the location where you found the lantern fly on their website in pennsylvania. If you're caught moving the insect from one location to another you could be fined. Abort from the destruction these little lantern flies could cause on native species. Governments are being so intense because they know that the lantern flies are quite striking. They're not the kind of bug most people would want to kill. Unlike some other invasive species like the asian longhorn beetle that caused a massive deforestation throughout new york in the late nineties. According to the new york times

"Ourselves down. Various rabbit holes of data some lead to stories some. Don't we end each week. Show with one of those dissents. Hot take takedown rabbit hole of the week. Neil take it away what. We've talked a lot on the show about the upcoming changes to the college. Football conference landscape most notably involving oklahoma and texas is massive moves from the big twelve to the sec. For what's most likely the twenty two thousand five season. I guess there's a chance they could Worm their way out of those contracts earlier but it sounds like it's going to be twenty twenty five but i could not resist making today's rabbit hole about one more related tidbit To that from this past weekend's college results so on saturday the number fifteen ranked texas. Longhorns traveled to razorback stadium to face arkansas. For a non conference matchup that will eventually morph into a conference matchup in just a few years win. That move happens it was texas is first. Scc opponent since the conference move was announced and extensively. It was an easy chance. For the longhorns to make a great first impression against their soon to be new conference rivals really put everyone on notice that hey were part of the. Sec we're facing se competition. Arkansas was unranked going into the game. They went three and seven last season solely against scc competition. They went to ten each of the two previous years before that they haven't gone five hundred since two thousand sixteen over the previous ten seasons. Arkansas was a combined. Forty one in sixty nine going into the game including a sixteen and fifty. Eight mark within the sec. Yet was a road game against the power five opponent but as far as those things go this was looking like a fairly routine game for texas on paper. And according to espn's football power index model longhorn teddy's sixty eight percent chance to win before kickoff so of course after kickoff texas punted or missed a field goal on each of its first seven drives. It failed to score any points in the first half. It fell into an early sixteen to nothing hall eventually. Went down thirty three to seven. At one point it ultimately gave up three hundred thirty three rushing yards in forty points to a team that average only one fifty one and twenty six per game last year respectively in those categories and they lost by nineteen after the game. The fayetteville crowd of nearly seventy five thousand fans rushed the field and tore down the goalposts at texas expense. So much for that first. Sec impression the irony of a big name conference hopper losing to one of the worst teams in its future. Conference wasn't lost on anyone but it's actually surprisingly hard to find similar instances of these unwelcome meetings with future conference foe What i did was i dug into our yellow college football database and i looked for all games where a team first of all played for different conference than the one that they currently occupy within the next five season..

"This fun stuff the longhorn beds before the game, and then when you get to the game, it's exciting. You're going to see Earl Campbell tomorrow, Ricky Williams and about 3 10. They're going to rededicate the field to Earl and Ricky. And then comes the game with Louisiana of Lafayette, Louisiana, formerly the rates and Cajuns. And I think it's going to be a terrific game. Texas is favored by just eight points and I think that's fair because Louisiana is a good football team. I think the Longhorns are going to win tomorrow, but it's gonna be an interesting battle because We have the new coach Steve Sarkeesian, a new quarterback, a bunch of new everything tomorrow. What's the quarterback's name? What's his name? Hudson card is a quarterback formerly of Lake Travis. Oh, yeah Red shirt. He had limited appearances last year. Tall kid. Great arm. It looks like an athlete Looks like a great athlete. He is and he is really Friday athletes. Played some wide receiver early on in high school, so he's very athletic. He looks like the kind of guy that he looks like The kind of guy that if he wasn't playing quarterback, he'd still be in the game somewhere. Yeah, he'd be in the game at the Fiji has to. You know what I mean? Uh, yeah, but he would be he would be in the game, but everybody's looking forward to seeing be John Robinson. He wears number five. They're running back for the long orange. He's getting all sorts of pre season accolades, and I think he's going to be terrific. So I think it's going to be a interesting to see if Steve Sarkeesian, the head coach. Can bring the things that gave him success as offensive coordinator at Alabama for a couple of years. And are you going to part Ed? Are you going to be in the press booth and as the press booth Air conditioned by chance, Jenny is the pope a Catholic? Ha ha. Yes, I'll be in the press box. I'm gonna go early tomorrow. You know, there's there's some limitations. We travel social distancing in there. We're going to all wear masculine press box. We're only going to have a lot a light lunch instead of instead of Mexico this year, with somewhat disappointing, usually eventual lot is in there. Oh, each A lot of tacos. Tacos are Carbone. Do you have it all there in the press box now because of because of the star in Covid boxed lunches so that that will be five. So I think this is the second year that they've been allowed to sell booze at the stadium. Is that right? Beer? You know, it could have been. It's just I think this may be the third year to thank you. When you go to the game, it's cashless. They're not going to accept any cash tomorrow. So have your debit card. And if you just have cash tomorrow there'll be stationed where you can put your cast. In the machine and they'll punch out your card. But it's a cashless deal tomorrow, which which Which band should we pay attention to which which Longhorn band is going to get the most attention? Well, I'm looking forward to that won't band tomorrow. I really am. The walk band will be performing. I think they get on the field right after midnight after the game. I'm just kidding. No, I'm looking forward to the show Band of the Southwest. How are they going to do this? Seriously? What have you heard? What they're going to be two bands in the stands. I just I just think I don't think that second Ban has been formed yet. I hope it never gets form. It's a ridiculous proposition. They should have won ban the Longhorn band, and they should play the eyes of Texas long. And proudly because it is a school song, and a lot of those bad people are on scholarship. And if you're on a scholarship, you follow the rules and the rules say, now you play the eyes of Texas. That has been deemed by a bipartisan committee of all sorts of students and faculty and former students that it did not have racist origin. So it's time to move on and play the eyes of Texas. I agree, And here's what I'm looking forward to. My understanding is you're expanding sports Saturday not only the five o'clock in the six o'clock hour, but you and young son Ben, I'm gonna be taking calls. I'm only going to listen. It bends on the air. That's what a lot of people State said yes. Can't Thanks. We're going from 5 to 8 tomorrow because we'll be starting our 15th Club Golf show in the end Zone Club at least Spin Zone club right at the end of the show, but I love that show. We carried it over for this week only.

"There you see. Penn state and wisconsin again week zero. And then we transitioned into week one so labor day weekend full full slate of college games and none other than clemson and georgia talk about a potential statement making game for really certainly for georgia. They marked nineteen tenth season opening matchup between ap top five opponents the first since two thousand seventeen so listen whether you talk about this weekend where we we have some games that certainly matter or the first full slate the following saturday sam teams have a chance some more than others to make a statement straight out of the gate. Who do you think can make the biggest statement as we start a new season. Well they always say that. If you want to be the best you got to beat the best. So i'm going miami versus alabama. I think miami has an opportunity to be the best. They're playing alabama in week one. They've got the air king coming back at quarterback he's going to be healthy. He's been rehabbing like crazy. They say ran twenty miles per hour practice three weeks ago so he's going to be ready and also many many. Es because texas we know them really well he has an opportunity to really turn that program around to the miami of old. And so i think that of all the all the week zero in week one matchups. I think the miami max versus alabama could really be a major turning point. Well there's no question. And i think if miami starts focusing on the moment and the helmet on the other side line. They're in big trouble. Worry about miami and let each play take care of itself. You know what there's so many great matchups that weekend labor day weekend. But i'm going to go to zero. And i think the team that needs a win is nebraska not just scott frost but nebraska's a whole their fan base okay. They need something good to happen to them. You've had abysmal performance on the field. Haven't been able to turn that corner. Then you have the off-season issues with ncwa allegations. They've got a dark cloud hanging over them. And i know they're taking on illinois but it's a conference game and they need to do something to not only make themselves look good but make themselves feel good create. Some confidence put your program in a position where maybe now some of that negativity falls by the wayside. Even if it's just for a week get a big win. Scott frost no. I'm totally with that and think about it like back in the day. Think about like the black shirt defense right. Nebraska was and think about what they were back in the big twelve. I remember back. When i was playing in two thousand ten texas was playing nebraska and the big ten big twelve championship. The two thousand nine year and so nebraska has a great opportunity and scott. Frost have a great opportunity in zero to really turn the table and really show what they're all about. And you guys you know it's fair to say that you can certainly recover from a week one loss. That's way too melodramatic to say. You can't before a program that is trying to find an even keel. You also know that getting out in front and getting a win in that week zero week one makes a huge difference especially for a program like that again trying to sort of bounce back if you will. We're going to bounce back. we've got vince. Young coming up. We talked a little bit about sex football. We're going to talk a whole lot more. A new documentary coming out about that tremendous two thousand five season. He joins us to talk about it next.

Yeah and i hope by friends. Don't hear this because they'll probably shoot me for saying that. Austin texas competing. With the longhorns. And there is not a chance in hell of them competing with long warts none zero zilch nada. I'm just thinking of it. Like is football. I mean heck the houston. The houston oilers moved out of texas. So it's not like a guarantee that texas world. I'm just not no. No i'm just saying like a guarantee that an awesome team is going to be successful I think the bills are a good team right now. They are so if you're going to move them now you gotta move them now if he wants some like success to immediately start as heck a successful professional team in. Yeah then they could. I guess entice people to go see them. More than the longhorns. Because long done anything in a while. But that's that's hard they the i i don't care if they win the super bowl Nothing they will not overtake longhorns. That's almost like ellis. Like the same. The new orleans saints overtake because that's not happening either except worse because because lsu isn't even in new orleans. Oh yeah. and i mean 'cause if anybody's been louisiana lsu everywhere everywhere everywhere. I went to like the middle of nowhere..

Amid rumors of the school's shocking departure from the conference, the universities released a joint statement today announcing that they would not Be renewing their media rights grants following the expiration in 2025. What do you think all this means? You know, I've been just diving deep into this. Given that Baylor. Where I went to school is I have a feeling going to be left out in the cold. And all I can get to is that I'm more frustrated with Baylor for not being more proactive. Or maybe they just past 10 years. I understand that. But if you know that you're dependent upon somebody else, Yeah, you need to start changing that right? Like if your job is dependent on somebody else to success. You should try to change that. "Nine eight eight nine where they've been the last almost three decades all right. Now let's talk. Texas longhorns football and i and i have said this before When i was a kid growing up texas oklahoma nebraska was kind of college football to me. You know so. There's a story that texas and oklahoma are going to notify the big twelve. We are leaving at the end of our contract. Be very very careful texas. What you what you hope for. I've always had a soft spot for texas. Because years ago. I always liked their uniforms and their helmets and their brand and i love austin texas great city but years ago i went to taxes. Usc game and it's the single greatest spectacle of any sporting event. In thirty years. I've been a sportscaster. And i didn't want to sit in the press box. I sat in the stands right in the middle of the longhorns section and they were smart and good looking people and we sat there and witnessed an incredible sporting event. Reggie bush vince young and they were classy and the in the stadium. The rose bowl was just a wash in rust orange. Longhorn color and that you know that. Usc gold it was. It was an epic. It was a photographer's dream. Roger clemens is on the sideline and hollywood stars and matthew mcconaughey and it is the single greatest three hour event of my life. And i've always had a soft spot for texas. Football the longhorns. I've just always liked him. They to me. they're cool. They could go independent. They feel more pac twelve to me. I mean they're progressives they're cool they're tacky they feel pac twelve to me. They don't feel like starkville that they don't feel like oxford they don't feel like gainesville they feel kinda like la with cowboy hats the music the progressive politics. It's super techie. In fact san francisco during did the biggest exodus of any city in america was california's moving to austin texas californian's like austin texas. They eat well the party. Well it feels like an extension a little bit of the west. The sec does not feel like the west. It's cutthroat it's insular. The recruiting is a pit of cheating and paying off players. Sorry that's the reality with the. Sec ole miss just the one that got caught. I don't think texas feels like the sec. They are a glamour brand a little like usc. I remember talking to a football coach. At usc about five six years ago and he said actually was an administrator and he said we want our kids to enjoy this experience. Usc is more than football. Look at the olympics filled with usc ucla athletes. We want our kids to experience college too. Not just a weight room. They're not too concerned about that in the sec. The sec is a snake pit. it's intense. I don't think texas fits it. I really don't be careful what you wish for. Texas doesn't feel southern. They don't feel that intense. They feel kinda cool. They feel kind of casual. I'd stay in the big twelve or go to the pac twelve or i'd go independent but be very careful what you wish for. Texas am has different. They'd sell their soul to in football games. I have never once thought that. About the longhorns. Texas tech texas am. That's different. i don't like it would also and i love college football. It would be wonderful just once if college football eight billion dollar. A year sport just once felt like had leadership instead of schools and athletic directors and commissioners pretty much controlling everything to money. Grab i get it. There's a lot out there. Be nice to have some you know. Ceo you'd think of your eight billion dollar business. The sport would have you know centralized figure you know their version of a. You know a roger goodell or an adam. Silver hella dana white. Somebody a maverick leader and it doesn't so here we are today with a great football brand and i'm not surprised. They have suitors. I mean it's texas. It's a big state. It's a great brand. It's slick with by the way they have a great athletic director christel contests probably the smartest athletic director in the country. That's largely understood within athletic director circles at a great university. Be very careful. You are not the south. You are not the sec. There is a refined polish and progressiveness to texas. I think you're right where you should be all right. I'm sure that'll go over well from those. Sec fans love hearing from me emmanuel acho what texas. He'll join us today. "Back on sports talk Jason and and veto on a Thursday afternoon PJ tours of the Travelers Championship outside Hartford, Connecticut, and there is a big Longhorn look on the leaderboard. Cramer Hickok from Dallas, former Longhorn is currently tied for the lead with Sarkozy Kadokura of Japan. They're both at seven under par. Bo Hosler, the former Longhorn is tied for fourth. He's at minus five. And Doug Gim, the former Longhorn. He is at minus two. So good showing so far for the Longhorns. Come hook. Um Cramer hook him, hook them bow and hook them Doug again. We were Ed and I were just talking in the break about how the Longhorn golf team has several guys, right? Who will? You know? Moonlight on the on the professional tour, Right? Who will get exemptions to go play a certain event, and it's starting a week from today. July 1st. When the name image likeness rules go into effect, I would presume They would be eligible to have a to have a bag sponsor to wear a. You know a hat Nike had or whatever, Nick collect some cash off of. That's where it's interesting because Texas is a Nike school. And I don't know if Nike would give them money to wear Nike school. But as I understand the rules, you have to have the same. The same. You have to Canada Conflicting brands Tide list. I just think we have to think out of the but you have to think. Of someone who is using the TIC Tac's these days. It's not what the traditional. It's not what you would see on a jersey It's not, you know, doing a commercial for a Kark. Anything like that. I think it's literally it could be anything if you have money. And you want to get the word out about whatever you have. This is where you're going to be seeing it, So it's not. I think it's going to be so non traditional in the sense of like carrying a bag or anything like that. Those are opportunities. But I think the majority of this In my PR mind, it's out anything outside of the box. It's doing a dance like on the tick tocks for a company that just wants to get its name out. That has nothing to do with sports, or that doesn't want to logo. Branded. It's just the amount of followers that they have. How popular that they are. And how many eyeballs you're going to get on their socials. I could see one where you have be, John. I'm be John Ross. This is on Instagram or Twitter. I'm be John Robinson. And then be John goes and I liked Austin. FC boom. He's in that yeti jersey and stuff. Hook them often. FC Boston FC Page divisions MySpace pages, nut, Sad nuts. Nuts. Yeah. But I like that idea. No. Yes, I am. Yes. I think that sort of thing. I mean, I'm not be John. Contact the or you have your people talk to Austin, FC, whatever. But no, I I think that you're absolutely right, Vito, and I think a lot of that is in in that. Going to see this on social media before we see it anywhere else because that is going to be the quickest way to turn on the faucet, Dude like this calm record, I'm so in sewed yada, yada yada. Send right and out to, you know, and then all everybody that follows them. Oh my God. Retweet share whatever and and come July 1st when they all of this this thing that's been forbidden for hundreds of years as all of a sudden going to be allowed, Uh, that's the way that they are going to. I'm really nervous about this, Jason, the more I really think about this. What she said. Maybe even a year ago about just how this is literally going to change the landscape. The recruiting now is instead of what can we do for your career? Look at the history that we have. It's going to be like this is how much money we could make you pause on that one second, because I'm nervous. It's 5 36. And we haven't done But 30. Yeah, not by the time I walked in, it was already done. Ladies and gentlemen. Hi. Were you just waiting to see what was that We were there and over under only want To just be like I wonder if he'll go the rest of the show and that it's time to bring us beer. 30. It's that time. "O'clock in Omaha, as the Longhorns will have their first game of the College World Series. And with us now on the sports talk live line is one of my favorite former Longhorn pitchers. His name is Greg Swindell. 17 year career in the major leagues of Texas 43 8 led the Longhorns of three straight Southwest Conference Crown second at the College World Series in 84 85. He's a member. The Longhorn Hall of Honor and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame More World Series winner with Arizona. Coach. Welcome back to sports talk. And by the way, they will tell you about talk about your great Longhorn network for the last few years. Welcome back to sports talk. And how are you doing, Greg? I'm doing good. Uh, Exciting time of year horns are going down the hall Should. I think they're probably ranked number one. So it's exciting right now. Well, there are the highest rated teams still in there. How good is this? Texas Longhorn baseball team, Greg You, of course, played for coach Gus. You've seen a lot of lot of great Longhorn teams. How good is this team? There. Um, There's good. That has been Texas in a while. They they have speed. They have power. Um they lead the nation in the R A and pitching. Their feeling is like 12th in the nation. I think at 9 80, so it's a team that can do it all and they've been able to do it the entire season. It's not they didn't They're not there by look, you know they beat good teams. They got good draws in the region of the Super Regional, but they had to win. They scored runs. They pitched well, they do everything really good. And I think this team has a good good shot. Did winning at all. Greg, It's your brother Beato here and man how I miss playing in that celebrity softball, reckless Kelly Jam out of the Dell Diamond with your brother, man. We got to get them to bring that back, right? We do. I mean, that was that was always a fun time out there. Thanks for taking the time with us today. A real quick Mike Murphy wanted to say what's up to your brother and I saw that you had scratched out the old last stand hats hat that, said 36 trips to Omaha Because now we're here at 37. It reminded me of like an old interview that you had done kind of re recapturing your time at Texas. When you could have when you said that you could have been a part of a back to back championship run if things had gone your way. I mean, you had gotten so close back to back back in the day. A lot of these guys have never made it this far understand what they're about to get into what would you say to those Longhorn players heading out to Omaha, riding the high of an undefeated regional super regional season? Yeah. I mean, it's so tough because you want to enjoy the moment. And that's the That's the biggest thing because with a full capacity, it's going to be 20,000 people at the Games opening ceremonies, you have to enjoy it and and and take it all in. Once they get their Sunday starting at six o'clock, though, um it's all business have have have, uh, your game plan ready and go out there, because, uh, It can all change. And this is what you worked, for. The hard part is over, basically making it to Omaha. Now now, the easy part is enjoying the college World Series and all the festivities, But I think this team with everything that's going on. It's totally different than any college baseball season ever played because of all the protocol. And in covid rules and regulations and mask and I mean it's just been crazy, so they've had to put up with a lot already. Um and they've been able to focus they've been able to play good baseball. And I think they will continue that because, um, once you get there, it's quite a spectacle. It's quite a quite a time. Enjoy it and win some ball games. Coach been here, miss Playing for you in our our greatest Austin Hornets Select team. I think it was the greatest select team that ever could. Uh, talk about Coach Pierce and his impact on the Longhorn program so far in his first few years, uh, in Austin. Well, he's done great these last two out of three years. They've made it to Omaha. Also, he's he's doing something right. The recruiting is good. His coaches have been outstanding for him, John Allen and Phillip Miller and able to last year we didn't get the Houston Street too much with him. Because the season ended and bringing in Troy Tulowitzki. I mean, you're you're as good as the people around you. But David Pearce he's got he's been with these guys. He knows him. And he's got the talent and it's um What can you say? I mean, that's exactly his. He's making it back to Omaha for the second time in three years, and not too many coaches can say that. I mean, there are a few around the country, but Texas to be able to go not even make a conference tournament. Uh, the next year, and now they're back in Omaha. Also, it's putting things together at the right time in the right place and He's doing a good job. Is there some pressure on David trying to follow in the footsteps of coach Gus and Auggie winning national championships? I mean, I would think so. But if you put yourself there enough, you're gonna win and and David right now. Like I said, this will be his second time. And he's only been in Texas about four years. So it's you give yourself enough opportunities and you'll win some every once in a while, and he's given himself another chance. Greg What? What do you What do you take the Longhorn homer out of the situation just being involved in the sport for so long when you you probably are familiar with all the other teams that are there as well. What do you How do you see the Longhorns like actually performing up there? And do you think that it's hurting them having to take the week off after their bats and pitching and defense were on fire in the regionals and super regionals? No taking, taking time offices. Good. They had old time off. In between the conference tournament in the regionals, and they needed it because they didn't they didn't do too well. The strikeouts reared their head in Oklahoma City during the conference tournament, but they regrouped, and since then they have scored double digits and four out of five games. And and started scoring run, so they they're enjoying the moment right now is what they're doing, So I don't think they're going to have a letdown. Yeah, the competition is obviously going to be better. In Omaha, but they faced Mississippi State. They know these other teams they faced Arizona last year. They've seen other teams that are in the tournament so they can hit They can throw. I mean, they just You really? Don't worry about your opponent is what I'm trying to say. When you get there. You play your type of baseball. And if It's not enough. It's not enough. But to me, Texas has what it takes to win their side of the bracket and get into the nice championship series. And I think that will be, um On the other side of ragged the Vanderbilt Commodores because they can do it all. I had a chance to do the reason I didn't do it from Nashville, but I did it and and called every game in that regional they got. They got power pitching. They speed. They got everything. So I I really think that We can see another matchup that Vanderbilt beat Texas in 2018 to get to their first, um, where they end up winning the next year, the first College World Series, So I I think Texas, though, has.

"It's been a pretty slow week in college basketball. Exactly zero icons have announced their retirement plans. No assistance have been named their schools coach in waiting. But i did talk to texas coach chris beard earlier in the week. So let's talk about that deadline. Let me start by asking you. This most seemed to believe that crispier will in the long term and perhaps in the short term as well but certainly in the long-term proved to be the best hire from two thousand and twenty one. Do you agree with that. I don't know if he'll have not not not explicitly so i think that he's got a really good shot at being very successful. I think his odds are probably the best. But i also think the nature of the job. He's taking the league. he's taking it in even kansas. Gets you know. Dial back here a more than a few notches for a few years. It's still going to be kansas bill. Self has an ideal contract situation going forward so he would not be my pick. He would not be most likely picked to do the best job at this school for the long term. I think he has to objectively be in like the top three of that conversation. Hell he might be your number one. That's part of why you spoke them to begin with but he would not be my pick to be the most successful at the school. Among the hires power conferences in this cycle. Then who would be. Okay i will go with craig smith because i think craig smith has the best chance at both having success and staying at that school. Not that chris. Beard won't like chris beers at texas for the next twenty years and won a national championship. Of course. I could foresee that happening but to me. Correct smith has been really good at south dakota utah state. Now he's going to go to utah. And i think this is a situation. I you know we're all just shooting darts here. But i think that is most likely spot for coach. Have long term success at that
