"Is animal testing happening. Well depends on how you define animal testing. It is happening. I test animals. I have rats and pigeons lab at ucla. And i studied behavioral neuroscience types of questions with them. Then there's all the way to the idea of like you know the perfume. Companies forcing rabid is open and dropping drops in animal testing. Could be a lot of different things. I have a colleague who studies marmots in the wild in colorado. He tags them. I believe and then he just watches them for the most part and watches them. Observe some naturally and occasionally can do an actual experiment like put a speaker and you play a call and you see like an alarm call or something and you can see how the different individuals react and so that a form of animal testing so. That's a broad question. Okay well first of all. We already established that your monster. I would love to have your friend on the program because that guy sounds really interesting. And finally yeah. I'm referring to the evil animal testing. I don't know what to call that exactly. But it's it's the the animal testing of mind nightmares. What about feeding coffee. Two cats i mean is that in the realm of animal tests. Yeah great question does seem cruel and unusual to me. Yeah to answer your question. I don't know a lot about all the history of that. But i do know that at university systems and a zoos as well the regulations that govern the ethics of keeping animals in captivity and the kind of treatment we could do has gotten so much more oversight over the past twenty thirty forty years. There's been a lot since the eighties. There's been a lot more steadily increasing amount of oversight and concern and review of all procedures all conditions under which animals that are kept in captivity for research purposes for entertainment which zoos fall into that category as well as research. A lot of research goes on zoos as well. There's a lot more oversight than there used to be and so there's a lot less of the kind of unethical in our view mad scientists kind of tests done or or evil company. That just wants to get there. Make sure to perfume isn't gonna destroy. Girls is before they get a makeup before they get out there on the market. There's a lot less animal testing in those situations to my knowledge. I don't know for sure if it's completely gone or or what. But i know a lot less. Nobody you want to shout out right now and destroy like you. Don't have a fight with ralph lauren. "Dot com slash smart for details bridges over. Here we go back to the show about science to her back and we're talking about the economy of rats. I do want to there. Were in this movie. Some of my favorite parts were with the rats actually and for example. Well maybe they were mice. Am i wrong. Button that little that little town the little the little road in town and then there's like mafia rats or mafia sister big sur. Not as far as i can understand those were not rats. So those were like what was it like a vol- right or shrew. I think okay very cool. I did not know that do do they live in the tundra. Because i believe that all took place in two hundred town and i was a little surprised to see that kind of road in in the snow. Yes they do in fact. I was in buffalo a couple years ago. And i saw voles hanging out. You know where normally wintertime it would have been all snowing. This was summertime there. Those northern climates have a lot of these real small voles and shrews. And things like that. Do you know if they're often involved in organized crime like this movie tells us is trying to avoid them. So i don't know yeah. Okay that makes sense.

"Well i mean bugs. Bunny was always shown with a carrot. Right yeah but so. I assume maybe i'm wrong here that that was already a stereotype or like a common. You know joe exactly right even before that. Yeah yeah yeah go way. Back guess again. Because farming farming goes way back among humankind to think of in england foreigner tons of rabbits in in the uk. You go out to a farm. And they're always putting fences up to keep rabbits out. They have to cut the fences down to the ground. The rabbits can dig under defense and get into the garden so this tension between farmers and and the rabbit. So i think that's where they idea about the carrot and rabbits together comes from c. It's amazing to me that it's so well known incorrectly improperly that they love carrots and yet i never hear about them. Digging holes underground. That's fascinating. well. I don't know a lot about it. I just know that they make warren's There's a great book. Watership down nokia beretted. They made it into a really violent movie because it's actually kind of violent scenes in the book of rabbit warfare rabbit on rabbit violence. It's an allegory. Type of story told with rabbits as the characters but it the guy who wrote it. Richard atmos did a lot of research among people talking about people who knew about ramsey rabbit biologists and there are such a thing and god his back straight and so it really did. They do dig. They're really gonna digging They can tunnel a few feet in day easily. And so yeah. It's a great way for them to both escape predators escape getting. It'd be saved both safe place to raise their young and to get past those pesky fences. Wow fascinating and i guess. Fox's do similar thing right isn't there a foxhole is a I don't know if boxes are good at digging as rabbits or if they use already existing holes good question. I don't have the background on that. Oh interesting okay. So maybe maybe rabbits have the upper hand there with the with digging. I can get out of get out of danger. Okay so this is a this is silly one. But there's so many different types of animals in this movie and they're like you said are like living in this big city and doing a lot of kind of human activities including what they eat. There's cops which are you know rhinos and the like and they're eating doughnuts and coffee and stuff like that. And so i have to ask if animals can have these treats. They will eat them if you give them to them. If there's an opportunity for a wildebeest to eat a doughnut it probably would okay but not healthy for this will be would not know it would not be healthy for them just like it's not healthy for us. It's probably even less healthy for them. I mean i just visited home. I was in miami and my mom has a dog and she let the dog lick the remains of her asai bowl or yeah and i was quite alarmed by that. She was like no. It's fine. it's just fruit or whatever not not not that fine okay. I'm glad i have this on the record so dogs should not have. Is that what you're telling me. That's what i'm saying. No doughnuts no ice cream. My grandmother used to give her poodle. Ice cream is it worse for for animals than it is for us. Think well. I don't know if it's that much worse for them except that they're smaller. They don't have a history. Humans at least have a history of some sort of eating kinda these processed foods and primates have better ability to break down sugar that comes from fruit and therefore that they really massive amount of sugar in ice cream in an asset evil. Would i think we're a little bit better able to handle that then. An animal more from predatory background. Okay that makes sense evolutionary early. We have experienced digesting that stuff and they don't so who knows what it's going to do to them. Yeah it's like a spectrum. I mean we're further along the spectrum of it being somewhat doable without being too much long term harm but of course it's easy to fall out that spectrum and you're it sounds like you're kind of anti ice cream anti donuts. Is that correct. Those are two of my favorite desserts. But yeah i don't eat them really except on they really -cational treat because i just know how it messes me up. So yeah yeah yeah. Okay that makes sense. You have a favorite ice cream flavor. Got to ask it's law. That's the law yes. Of course. I do chocolate. Wow okay also mind michael rocky road rocky road. Wow that's a rare one. That's rare wine while just when asking people that's on the mound rushmore class. Don't get me wrong. I'm all about rocky road. Rarely hear that response to favorite ice cream. I have just said the first thing that came to mind. You may have zia politics now. That i think about it. Okay that makes sense. What about donuts. And this is maybe just my mind going crazy. Right now but here in la especially. There's a donut shop every street. There's just notice that some of them are just called doughnuts. Yeah they have a real name. No correct i don't know how they list how they got incorporated but yeah there's donut shows everywhere and i'm so they're also cheap and so i'm so curious. How does this thing stay in business. It's like baffling to me. It's like pizza shops in new york city. Yeah just one every corner and they just fill their dumpster at the end of the night with with donuts that no one eight hundred and they're they're that's why they have a lot of rats. The rats aren't paying the bills very strange to me. Okay well To find out exactly how the rats do bay the bills. I'm going to ask that question right after this break. "Fox's do eat funny so they did play that up correctly and that was part of what they were asking me about in the consult was that dynamic and they're going to be partners in this film in like how might that play out that old history play out and so yes. They are natural predator prey. Okay are is. They're kind of like classic moves that the does do. The bunnies have any of defense. I would think that they're they're quick. Their speed might get them out of a fox's mouth but fox's are very fast as well no yes fox's do try and ambush silently It's to their benefit. Because they're going after if they're going after a rabbit would be a of a kind of prayed. Run away quickly if they're caught too soon discovered too soon. Yeah so prey. Animals like bunnies hunted by visual predators. So of wolves and foxes are both they use sent as well to locate prey but then to chase down and catch prey. They're using vision to a large extent as well as birds of prey like al owls and hawks also visual forager's for the most part and so these kind of pray like rodents and rabbits have these different natural defenses that get engaged when they detect that there might be a predatory threat nearby and it depends on how imminent that threat is if they think there's some kind of prey predator near by what they generally do is freeze so they stop all movements. Trying is still as possible. The only noticeable movement. You can see if you're watching them. Is the chest moving from breathing. You know other than that. They're not moving and that's because the visual predators are looking at their detecting prey based on motion. So you've ever had a cat and you have like a you dangle something in front of it or two laser point on the wall and the cats are like just watching it and wherever you jerk later point or the item they jerk it they watch it track. It really drawn attention to motion now. Once the predator gets close enough. There's it's about to strike at the prey. That's when they usually will then stop freezing. They'll book it the run and that's the rabbits best defense. Okay got it. That makes a lot of sense. And i will say i'm not a scientist of course but i do have two cats and i did read that when you play with a laser pointer with cats they love it but you can't just end the game because they get frustrated. They didn't catch anything. So you have to kind of like hide food while they don't see you and then bring the laser pointer to that little treat and then turn the laser pointer off and that way they feel like okay. I'm satisfied i guess. Yeah i mean. I've had cats and i've done the laser point and often didn't end it that way but i would end up by putting them and giving them comfort of some kind so i didn't leave them too stressed out at the end okay. I still think you're a monster ablaze. But you know we don't have time to get into your psychology. unfortunately michael. Have you ever been hunting or for eaten rabbits. I know people people eat that. I don't think i've ever eaten rabbits. And i've never been hunting. Okay good same. So i wish i had more now. I will say. I have a friend that has a laser thing that he leaves on at night for the cat and his cat is mentally ill and sick and has a lot to do with it. Because it's just i. It's a never ending jerry trying to catch something that can't be caught. Worst i know did you. Do you know if the cat had these types of issues before he started using my ideal. Okay i met him. I met him when he was already too far. Gone pretty crazy. Yeah too far gallon. Wow alaska's damn i yeah. I feel like. I've been an immoral thing to sell cat coming big cat not my place however you want to own your cat cat. I mean good but research shows right on the line of of where. I don't feel comfortable being like. I don't think that's you know. Maybe you should turn that well ahead and take that stance because according to my research one hundred percent of stories that i've heard involving all night laser turn this i have to. I have to tell them this. It'd be responsible of me. Not yeah please at least today at least play pink floyd at the go into the laser show. He doesn't silent. Oh my god so gruel. Okay so i have to ask the what. The deal is with rabbits and carrots like. There's a ton of carrot jokes in this movie. There's you know the rabbits parents are carrot farmers. So can you explain like do rabbits just really love carrots. Is it a major part of their diet. Do they have to live near carrot farm. How does this all work. Yeah where did that mean get started. Yeah to my knowledge. Carrots are not a major natural food source for rabbits they tend to eat leafy greens that are above ground and character below ground storage oregon for so there but they will dig up a garden to get at those things. And that's where. I think the the idea get started with humans growing carrots and turnips and those kinds of things the rapids getting into the gardens or eating leafy greens. But they're also digging up and going after the other things underground like turnips and carrots and stuff. And i don't think it's a major part of a wild wild rabbits diet. Wow okay so this is. Just you know propaganda. That's gotten out of control of that..

I'm from miami weirdly but but anyways now that live shows are back. I hope that we run into each other sometime in. La and we can talk about the sons and all my secret controversial too hot for the podcast thoughts on zootopia. I would love that. I had no idea that you would. That's amazing i mean. I think everybody should be at least for chris paul. He's worked really hard for signs e team to. Yeah it's an easy team to root for. Yeah come on. And they they'll jerseys look cool. What's not to love what's not to love seriously. Okay so zootopia guys. This was the first time that i had seen this movie. But i wanna find out from you. Let's start with michael. You had you seen this before. Was this your first time. I've seen the dmv slots seen okay never seen the movie. And what'd you think about the movie. I thought it was a it was crazy. There's there's a lot going on there. Yeah i agree latin. Yeah i mean would you recommend it to a friend. Did you think it was fun. Yeah i thought it was good. You know like a cute movie. I definitely recommend it to a friend or a friend's child or an enemy. But i'd also recommend it to To anybody because i think there's a lot going on under the scenes yassin's yeah i would agree. What about you was this. Your first time scenes. Utopia on no. Actually it's my think my third time When i watched it yesterday. I watched it in theater when it first came out our bought the dvd. And i watched it again with the kids but the family And actually Confession here. I'm a little bit biased. Because i was a consultant on the film whoo consulting on zootopia blaze. Yeah awesome byron. Howard had called the end the director of the film and they do this disney really especially under john lasseter as leadership. They really started doing a lot of in for every film or tv. Show that they make and i got in their rolodex. Somehow and i started getting called in on various projects and zootopia was the first one and it was really fun to see the building of it from its infancy really. Yes what was that process like j. Bring you in. And did they show you drawings and say to pause look like this or what. Sort sorta like that. They bring you into two. They're a big in burbank. They have this Their their site and also they have the site for the directors and the production team works and as a big Hat lake in that mickey mouse film. Yeah so they call you in there. You sit in a big board room with of the writers are to sketch people and the director and they have on the walls all of the like early stage drawings of what they think the characters main characters might look like what the world's going to look like you know the sketches they start taking you through the the story line kind of what they have formed at the time and by also pitching ideas are and then for every kind of they consult with their consulting for a specific reason and in my case it was obviously animal behavior. Rabbits and foxes. And how would they all work. If they're like human-like and living in a city together how would they interact things like that interesting. Okay so did you provide like do you recall any information or advice that you gave them that you then saw in the movie. It's hard to see specific things. But i feel like the movie. They captured a lot of the kinds of relationships between animals. That i talked about. And it's known not the only expert to know that predators and prey have these certain dynamic with each other right these kinds of relationships. There's a balance there. And so they obviously put that in the story building up the back story of where they came from and now they're no longer like that and they live in harmony by kind of thing and they were saying that that's what they were talking to me about. It was like you know. What are they going to be. The ways at the different animals might need to interact. And so now no specific thing to answer your question but just the overall feel felt you know honest and capturing what. We talked about awesome okay. Well i loved this movie so great work to you. I assume basically by consulting you also wrote it and did all the voices so just my hat is off. I thought it was great. Fun errors fault and we're going to get into it no. I didn't even nothing super struck me as like errors. You know like when we do kind of a more realistic space movie and all of a sudden you hear a bunch of noise and outer space or something but But it did just spark a bunch of questions while i was watching it including the beginning so the movie starts out with like the animals. Doing play and a tiger is attacking a bunny. And so you know. It's signs podcast. I gotta ask the hard hitting questions here. Do tigers eat bunnies to my knowledge. No okay 'cause they don't tend to live in the same areas with each other. I think even there tigers wouldn't find much of a meal out a bunny okay. it'd be like an appetizer larger prey. Yeah they wouldn't waste their time. Okay that's good to know. So we don't have to imagine tigers eating bunnies for the rest of this podcast. So that's nice. But but she does become friends with a with a fox but they are predators as they say in the movie many times. So do foxy bunnies. Fox's do eat funny so they did play that up correctly and that was part of what they were asking me about in the consult was that dynamic and they're going to be partners in.

"Peace on Earth. Good will to men. Surviving today are two more verses that are no longer son or recited. They are the protest of war. Theun from each black accursed mouth, the cannon thundered in the south on with sound. Carol's drowned of peace on Earth Good will to men. It was as if an earthquake rent the heart stones of a continent and made for Lauren. The households born of peace on earth, good will to men, but then the words of hope and faith. Peel the bells more loud and deep. God is not dead, nor does he sleep. The wrong shall fail. The right prevail with peace on earth. Good will to men. Lieutenant Charles Longfellow did not die that Christmas. He lived and returned home to his father. Six months later, Ulysses Grant and Robert E. Lee matted APPA Matics and the Civil War, America's most cruel War was over peace returns slowly to a tor nation. Today we are immersed in a different war but still war it is and in this Longfellow would find no surprise. But he probably would be surprised to find that his plea for peace has nevertheless become a best loved Christmas, Carol. And what better way to keep and sing of Christmas than with his words from that cold and far away, Massachusetts Christmas.

Now I'm loving. It was like a panic for like two weeks. I think for most of us and then I don't know I think I'm one of those people that needed a break and I didn't know it was pretty nice and that's a little you know. I know as well and it's it's a very serious bite. Yeah I've been lucky to be safe and minimal mental anguish. We'll good man. Tell us a little bit about yourself. I know Michael Longfellow. You're also a bit of a young fellow at twenty six years old with all of these accolades you've got you've been on Conan. How Happy Birthday. By the way I heard a couple podcast one when you were twenty five and then a month or two later you were twenty six so happy birthday. Thank you January. Thirty which you know in the same year far. Never unpleasant to get a happy birthday. I I had to think for about five seconds on what month it was so yeah I am a little late all right but anyway twenty six and a quarter now and you've got all these accolades in your pocket. You're on Conan. You were on. Bring the funny. It seems like you started really young as a comedian. I think it was nineteen years old tells how how you got into it. Yeah I Got into it the good old fashioned way. I thought about doing it for like three years and then finally did it at like an open. Mike and I liked it not an open. Mike actually is like kind of a showcase show. A MOM signed me up for stand up comedy class. 'cause I mentioned to her that I wanted to do it. Oh and I hated it at first I thought it was like so lame and it was like me and a bunch of seventy year old. That wanted to like do it once before they they pass on but it was nice they like my first show was at the end of like six weeks. We meet every Tuesday right and then at the end of six weeks. We did this show and it was like a lot of Torian and that was make sure show and it was nice. Everyone's I don't know if I did well but the audience was I was so cute and young but they were nice to me and yeah kept doing it. You'll hook them in with charm. Nice at. That's that's funny 'cause Eric and I we actually We met through a comedy. Showcase writing class slash shows probably. It's it's Tony's a yeah. Oh yeah that's what you know. Tony Nice I spent like three of that guy. Yeah Oh do sat down and not even go up at the shows. Sometimes you pissed me up was inserting. They're kind of I would do the sound and I always thought the agreement was like I'll get to do is set but sometimes I just be back there and you know how long they're shows are there's like twenty of us you know on why not. Yeah doing this down and the lights and everything is like a long a shitty Friday night for a kid in college or something but Yeah Dude I was there for like I still liked it for like three years. Did you ever seek vengeance when even when you didn't get that stage time did you? Just you had control of the sound. You could just turn it off when Tony goes up right but I wouldn't because I love the art and I would never sabotage it no matter what is being spoken like a true and I'd rather sit in misery and watch four hours of not misery. I you know. Let's let's tell like it is I mean my first time going up. I'm sure like inner man. I'm not saying I was any better. We're all beginning world figuring it out and you know people that start comedy. Usually pretty bad at it. Things that is right. That is very true. Yeah yeah get better very quickly I think in the beginning I mean some do some. Don't but you definitely did. And then you ended up continuing the career you move to. How was the move? What what was that like for you? I went kind the trip and then I ended up staying. I had like a family friend. What's like door? You just ended up going there and we're like I claim this as my town. I was GONNA go there for like a month like the longest trip I've ever taken and I wanted to move there but I didn't really know if I had the resources or two and then I just Lived in squalor and made it Made it work and then I met care along who was This old lady that lived with and like that a lot better when I met her. That's terrible it was. It was a lonely one year. And then you know wasn't that that's awesome. I was GONNA say to Carol was in your in your set on Conan to in my sad issues in the audience watching it choose backstage eating all the food no way. Oh that's also. She came to bring the funny to she comes to all of the all the TV stuff carols always there. Oh man that's so cute so you guys have really formed a nice little bond. Yeah we actually did. She's a friend. We still keep in touch. Probably not as much as I should. I should call more. But yeah you know. Did you guys ever Hook Up Man? Why you do. Why do you have to do that.
