NCAA Tournament West Preview
"It's ncaa tournament time we had championship. Week was absolutely spectacular. You had a championship game. That wasn't so spectacular in america conference by the big twelve was tremendous big. Ted was tremendous. Because you know what those two leagues are tremendous all season. Long games aren't games. they're events the acc was anti climactic but great for josh passenger and the greatest shield in the history of life. The big east to me was phenomenal. I mean patrick ewing. Not only does he no longer needed credential again but he got into madison square garden and walked away with four games in four days and his team played like an old vintage georgetown team. Pac twelve stolen a bid which was really cool. Wayne tinkle's got it was who was on the hot seat. It was so cool is good coach. A good person attack boil. Who's another great guy still going tournament. So i thought championship week was absolutely spectacular. Your take oh. I thought it was great. I look. I'm gonna tell you houston's legit at chance due to their games including the championship game in the ac. That is a legitimate. I was happy that drake dot in. I was happy that twenty five and four guy in. I thought that was terrific. I love the fact that the drew brothers are in the tournament. The demolishing of creighton shocked the living in. Hell on me. And says i'm telling you i like when you lose guys mclaughlin aquino record and next thing you know man. What are you doing better. The next year matt pain and getting himself in the top four seeds after losing two guys eastern and harms but overawe a look championship. Week was the sec. Tournament was off the charts with the championship. Game and college basketball delivers it delivers every damn nights. Let's go to the west ready. Let's do it all right now. Let's do this number one seat. I was thinking what games in the upper half of the west. Are you looking forward to see. I wanna see what. Oklahoma can do eight nine game now. Maybe it doesn't matter because you're gonna play gonzaga. But i think this i think if you're gonna play along krueger team whether you're konso martyn missouri. Who has struggled or whether you're gonzaga. You know you're going to play a very very good basketball team. And i had them earlier in the year they can shoot it. They defend it. They play hard. I don't think they're overly talented and the kid to get something done but lon kruger is so good at dictating pace. That if i'm sitting here with gonzaga i wanna lesser coach in my second round game assuming that they win. What do you got. Well you know i actually. I think missouri can win that game. A jeremiah tells me he's going to have to go out guard on out on a primitive 'cause they're playing brady at the five and they've run them all over the place on the other side though rate mattis gutter guard that dude on the block to is become a good player control martin's team when they're older and more mature and her physical they are talking tournament. Think about what he did tennessee. So you know this is going to be really good game because you've got a tough physical team in missouri. You've got a team that attacks match ups plays almost four guards in oklahoma. I'm actually leaning towards missouri in this match up. Well you're going to be wrong and that's okay you can be. It's okay. I can be wrong. It will be the first time won't be the last time and you know that's right. I don't have either. We'll on from barry. I but i touched on that but also got to say tony bennett said that most of his team is in quarantine south. Now i don't know about you but that preston kid that plays at ohio university. Ooh yeah he can go and all of a sudden. You're talking about a team that wait a second. I know i know. Virginia's good. I know virginia came on. I know they ended up with the one seat in the acc tournament. But seth you're playing against a hot as hell ohio university team. A team led by jeff bowls. Who frankly he's the perga- guide ohio you because he loves ohio you. He played there with the with the shock of the mac. But when you're playing a team in quarantine sat that tells me they're not practicing. That tells me this is gonna be a hats. This'll be a good game regardless.

"It went into triple overtime. Ah, lot of crazy things happen that season. Uh, coach Todd Simon. But what do you take away from that in your coaching career, What you guys had to deal with? At you and all the the firing of Dave Rice mid season, which, by the way, I did not agree with at the time I was like, Okay, makes sense. But then you know, it sets the program back. It should happen either. At the beginning of the year, the end of the year. But what do you What do you take from that year when you were the head interim coach at UNLV that you live with, you know, on the always remember Yet it was a great test and mental toughness. I mean, you're You gotta make the main thing the main thing and we owed it to the players. Could be absolutely filed in in the foxhole, developing them in getting working them with practicing. Prepping trying to find creative ways to find it. W because they deserved it. You know, they would. You know nothing that were going on else that world and I was like noise. That conspiracy theories and all these things that come up that are a distraction from players like they don't deserve that. And so as a coach, you just got to focus on Which you know what you do. Okay, sure of the players, and that's always players first. You know, Coach, I'm sure you'd agree with me and we we both admire Lon Kruger for you Know, just a phenomenal basketball coach. Not just what you did it you and only about his entire career and you know to me He's one of the best ever at turning programs around. And I see you is obviously a younger coach with that same sort of ability and talent not only to develop players but to develop young coaches on your staff and just to turn a program around with what you've been able to do over its southern Utah. Like Did you look growing up? You know as a younger coach, starting out, did you look at guys like one of the tough guys you looked at? Did you look at a guy like a lon Kruger and kind of model you're coaching after somebody like that? Yeah, you know, early on, I can't growing up in the kind of shadow the footprint of time is Oh, you go to his packs. Is she being in the Midwest? You know, as you know, is kind of known for intense Styled coaching and hold guys accountable and Bob Knight Gene Katie. Lucky early. Katie went to your practices right? Didn't Jean Katie show up in a week with spent a week with US first year? That's awesome. Um, you know, I'm big in the mentors later, you states, you've come up here and spent time practice, sir. And you know, I'm a big big into Listening. Get two guys, you know, learning from guys and I was fortunate with Coach Kruger to see Just how he got everybody wrong in one direction. So focused. You could be the coach's coach, being doing film for him was getting a doctor degree in basketball. Um, you know, it's a demon solution. The answers on the film and take the emotion out of it. You old guys accountable? Yeah. And, uh, you're gonna have you're gonna find success. And especially do you recruit well, and you have and you have There's no question, uh, just joining us head basketball coach Southern Utah. Todd Simon. Okay, Coach. I have to ask you this question. I know that your focus is with Southern Utah. I know you are loved their right. And you know, everybody wants you to stay there forever. But, you know, I don't know when and where or if other opportunities might come your way, And I certainly don't want you to talk about that or speculate on that. But with that being said, is Michigan State with that if you had to pick one job like, I don't know, we could be talking 10 20 years down the road. I'm just you know, it's all speculation. But is Michigan State? Would that be like the dream job for you like what is the dream job for Todd Simon? Um, you know, I don't actually think in those terms, you know, I I guess. Mental standpoint, um Get him so focused on making kind of a big time where you are that Being people's cliche, But what can we make this into? But the other next job and then make this afternoon make it in the next? I make this into the next job after that, right, you know, I guess, Um maybe, um Tunnel vision. Of doing this to a high high level. They take care of me. Here we go, You know, long term contract at that. Really be a great president. Placing lot enjoy raising my kids. You make all these decisions that we won't be going in the wack, which which is gonna be a very good basketball conference. You can instead of looking at all these things and You know, I haven't really thinking that way. To me. It's always about Dream job is to be with people don't know how you just succeed. Give you the resource Is that wanna win in bed and you do and share your vision. Tinnitus. Universities are not living breathing organisms like they give you a chance to It's gonna be about the people that you have. So it means it's about people, especially this stage in my career. I've learned that used to be surrounded by people who want to win that they wanna breathe. Besides your own team. What? What team in the nation. Have you been most impressed by so far, like like a gone segue first question and number two. What? What do you most been? Have you been most surprised by so far. You think Gonzaga's so dominant? I love dominance I want I mean, it means the way that they're just drilling people. Uh, alive left love it. You know, I just think that that's That excellence is at a high level, right? And so I really, really enjoyed that. Um You know the kind of watching the good teams in terms of surprise, Pete You know, uh Enjoyed watching Rutgers and seen that seen them two cans there. They got toughness. You know, really value that I think they're gonna They're doing some stuff. And in such a hard, hard, big 10, it's impossible to see. I think they really surprised. I'm just damage that they've been able to do. No question. So so, Todd moving forward Now, can you talk a little bit? First of all you guys have recently just allowed fans into your arena. Can you talk a little bit about that? My understanding. It's a few 1000 s. Oh, there are a lot of arenas across the country that are not even allowing any fans and I went to one of your games and I had a great time. And there was guys did a great job with social distancing lot of friendly people. By the way, I must say as well at the arena. Um, can you talk a little bit about that? That decision that that your program has made to allow some fans, at least in the arena? Yeah, I think we're at 25% way did shut down two weeks ago for a weekend. You know they did. They weren't feeling great about with students coming back. They wanted to be a little cautious, but Now they've been here for a couple weeks. That way, we're up 25% capacity and and which is great. I mean these arenas a perfect size for mid surgery at 5360 years there, it's loud and About 1000 or whatever is gonna feel like a million bucks compared to these empty arena, but do a great job. Our administration. Here's off the charts and sure, And so it's so it's said, feel safe. They do a good job. And what else? I could have the perfect Spectators. So, Todd, I've known you for a while now, and I remember we were talking last year. I think it was in December. I could be mistaken. You can correct me if I'm wrong. And this was before anybody knew anything, really about the pandemic, and we just knew that there were a few people in the country that had it, But you had told me that..

"We build something really special here. And you know, I was able to be here for every day that and and I'm really proud of that Russell Westbrook was with Nick every step of the way and collison saluted his former teammate, I just wanted to tell you Russ. I I've always admired you I wish I had your courage. I just I appreciate the fight. And thanks for coming out every night ready to rock with us. I appreciate that. Thank you. And of course, Nick also had kind words for the fans who were enthusiastic from the first Dame's. We're going to run and win the game deserted wherever you guys. So there, but the good times pretty much ended when the game began thunder got off to another terrible start trail by as many as nineteen then down a dozen with four minutes to play Oklahoma City went on a sixteen to four run to get the game into overtime. And just when you thought they might actually win. They didn't score for the first four minutes of OT the wraps at nine points by then and ended up winning one twenty three to one fourteen head coach Billy Donovan has seen this horror movies. Several times already. You just can't really have lapses for a quarter or coming outta the locker room because you're you end up having to play from behind. They hurt us. Obviously was we didn't shoot the ball, particularly. Well, and then the other thing was was the free throw line, you know, especially to start the game. I think we're too for ten at one point. Which is you know, we we gotta be better than that. Boy at thunder are five and ten since the all-star break into they get to go to Toronto they'll be up there to play the raptors again tomorrow night. And right now the playoffs were to begin. The thunder would be eighth. So good luck with that. Well, it's the start of many sports fans favorite long weekend. The beginning of the NC double a basketball tournament the first few games, usually when Cinderella gets clippers. Oh, you said to get going tomorrow against ole miss and head. Coach Lon Kruger says practices were good and had some extra juice..

"Again, hats off to them for making it first time since I think the seventies when they made a junior college deal that they've done anything like that. So amazing amazing job there, but Virginia should smoke this team just play great defense. Even if they don't shoot a great from the outside. And I think they will. I think guy and Jerome I think these guy hunters can have a good guy. I mean, I just think Jack salt I'm looking because again the smallest team in the tournament. Overall, his Gardner Webb who's gonna cover sasquatch Jack Salt Lake Jack Salz guy, like if I'm going to a bar, and I know it's going to be rough crowd in the bar. I'm going with Jack salt gonna pummel people man easy. He's nice guy. But you could see man. And that's the guy you want in a foxhole. Now, he never fit in a foxhole. But that's a guy. I want on my side. No doubt ole miss and Oklahoma. And I did too bracket. I mean to two of these things, and I split it. I did because Kermit Davis. I respect lonqer respect both these guys in in in a game that they've got time to prepare for they can come up and take care of business in Oklahoma. If they shoot it. Okay. You know, manic is a guy that's really got to shoot it. Well, I think that's players. They're always going to be defensive oriented because that's Lon Kruger preaches defense. Ole miss Davis, man. He's an Xs and os guys to a did a great job at middle, Tennessee State. And I love what he's doing at ole miss. So that's a game. I'm intrigued, and I got both teams different sides on on this particular bracket. I'm I'm looking at I got Oklahoma, dancing, Wisconsin and Oregon, and I'm going to go against the grain. I'm going to side with with my wife Christie now, I respect Brad powers. All these guys. They've got Oregon going away. There's some people I know have working get into the Sweet Sixteen and be on my buddy. Bob Lynch, by the way, when a shout out to Lynch, you I told my out to him today. Lynch. He's back there in Connecticut, man, what a great guy love when he comes out and hangs with me out here in Vegas. The Lynch EA. He's got a future on Oregon to win that region air and also to win the whole thing. And if he does then we'll be back in Vegas because they'll have a lot of money. So you know, that part of me is rooting for going to do really. Well, so then Lynch EA comes out, and I I just put everything on his tablet. I usually did. But Wisconsin's dangerous even though I tell you the one thing that really hurts Wisconsin Ethan hap- as far as free throw shooting because as a lot of fun and down low if he's one on one he's going to the rack. And that's the whole thing Oregon is not that deep that they can just keep bowing even half other teams may be able to have that luxury. Like, Florida state. They could foul even app with five different guys. And have this guy who's you know, fifty percent or actually forty six percent. I think from the free throw line going to line all day. Oregon Pritchard man, I love that guy. But I think Wisconsin if they can get it into the half court deal. It's gonna frustrate Oregon Oregon was able to play that way a little bit against Washington. And then they opened it up because they just shoot it better than Washington, but they won't shoot it much better than Wisconsin. Because Davidson can knock down shots. You know Iverson can knock down shots twice can knock down shots on of course, hap- down low. These always be very high percentage inside the paint. Kansas state without dean way during a lot of trouble against Irvan because Irvine's good enough to beat and Russell turn against done a great job in that team has weapons..

"Them three points at Kansas. So they're not going to be afraid of awkward. You know, they they know how to play teams like that. They didn't get the W. But that was a pretty that that their best win all year with the loss of Kansas. But that was very impressive performance if they can muster that up they'll be offered. So another eight nine is that all mess Oklahoma in the in Columbia, South Carolina in south region. What do you think of those two? Well, I picked Mississippi. I don't have a lot of faith in Oklahoma. Although they did finish. Well, Lon Kruger's are pretty good coach quite had the players the last couple of years while there's been trae young. But you know, they haven't really done well in the league this year, though, they they turned it around late and were able to get into the tournament. So you know, maybe they can win. I I kind of like the job Kermit Davis Mississippi, though, this year is really first year. There has already in an anti AA tournament. I I was thinking like Mississippi, but I don't think either one of them's getting past Virginia. What about that cues Baylor a nine in the west? Yeah. That should be fun. Right. Couple of couple of teams that plays zone, and with you know, long athletic guy, it might be that neither team scores. Much game could be played in the forties. I picked Syracuse. But I I think that basically a toss up it'll be whoever could get find a way to get some offense throwing and what about that in the east that these us central Florida game. I think that'll be a good game. Yeah. You know, the problems over VC Devon's going to be ready to go at fortunately, they found no structural damage in his knee. So they they they're trying to get him ready to play. I don't think they can be UCF without Philip. He's healthy and effective. And I like VCU I think they've got a good chance but without Evans. I don't think they can beat you. So lastly, who do you think I'd screwed? Nobody. Nobody really anybody gets screwed the closest certainly in terms of selection. Everybody's got left out. Absolutely deserved it. Yeah. I four out at the committee gave us on that list or seventeen and fifteen. Yeah. Nobody had to bring that up. Didn't you Jerry? I'm sorry, man. Thanks a lot, Jerry. Well, there was never any chance. Indiana was gonna make it, and then, you know, like fading Quenton argument that with so at no, nobody got screwed. I mean, people want to wind about feeding Michigan state bans are whining about seating. And you know, maybe Cincinnati a little bit. But Cincinnati is going to get to play in Ohio. So, you know, it's not really that big of a deal real quick. Let me say this. What do you like an adult de Purdue game? I love Old Dominion. I just Jerry every year. I just feel like Purdue never gets it done and done. Oh. Is that? I gotta go, Jerry. Thanks for coming on the bench. Right. There is Jerry palm with us again on CBS sports radio you have frequent heartburn like the kind of heartburn where you stash antacids everywhere, you feel like you've got to have those chalky tablets just in case heartburn strikes. If that's you know, that there's an easier way to deal with heartburn, right policy. OTC just one pill a day will last a full twenty four hours with zero heartburn with process. You can actually simply not get heartburn in the first place. No more stashing in acids..

"I had several coaches reach out to me yesterday. And I don't I don't think they would mind if I mentioned their names, let's think cigarette this. Out of the top one hundred teams how many are making the tournament and the NIT. A lot. So that basically says that he would lose every single game against NIT teams NCA tournament tips, you are judged as a coach are you getting the maximum amount of the talent you have are the are the teams getting better from start to the end of the year and talking about Marvin Menzies in UNLV, and I try to be as honest as I can I want you to succeed I never root for a coach to get fired with that being said year one he took over a horrendous situation, but did the team get better. The answer is no from the start of the year to the end of the year. You're one the team did not get better. That is very important. I don't care if they finished last in the conference last year was a complete disaster. You had McCoy who at one point. I believe we'll be NBA player start recruit. Yeah. Juiston a healthy juiston. You at Johnson as our point guard who at one point I think was third in the country in assist. You had Joe gel who still was a senior still was Cape combo scoring guard. He's capable of scoring is very athletic. And you had Clyburn who had a decent year this year who I think we'll be getting paid to play somewhere. That was a really good team Clyburn off the dribble. This year has been very very good. He's gotten much as his left hand is really tough for teams to stop. So the point I'm trying to make is extremely underachieved last year with his team. That's the point. I'm trying to make let's keep in mind. They had the best recruiting class in the mountain west conference last year that year was atrocious last year terrible. So I go by the last two years I go by. Ms his resume at New Mexico state. Did he went online accounts championships? Absolutely never want an NCAA tournament game. Never. He was twelve at New Mexico state against top twenty five teams in the country. Folks. These are facts. I have my opinions. But these are facts my opinion is I think he's the wrong guy for the job. I've been very consistent with that. Do I think he's a horrible coach do I think he's no I've never said that I just think he's the one guy for this job. And this is a very unique job. And I think UNLV hoops is on the brink of not being relevant anymore. So I talk about that on social media in the majority of the people actually agree with me. But I do get some that disagreeing. That's fine. I don't mind having a good debate. When it comes to UNLV hoops. I'd like to think we all want the same. We all want you to succeed. We all want UNLV to get better. Don't think is the right guy for John? Why is that because it's much more fun to cover a winning team? Absolutely. And you know, I really pull for Tony Sanchez. I really want him to make a bowl game next year. But if he doesn't make a bowl game, he's got gotta go. So what happens this year? Let me ask you guys this question out there. And I'll ask you Jason push. What happens at the end of the year this year? Let's just assume. That he finishes fourth. I think that's best case scenario in the mountain west conference. Let's say he finishes fourth. He's not gonna finish ahead of Utah. State. Don't think he's going to finish out of Fresno. We all know that is gonna win the conference best case scenario he finished his fourth. Again. That's best case scenario fourth fifth or sixth probably gonna finish somewhere around there. Right. Would you agree with that? Yeah. And I don't think their top three at this point. So let's just assume that happens and they and they win one game maybe in the conference tournament. I also think that's best case scenario they win in the quarters. And then they lose in the semis either Nevada or or better team. I think that's probably what's going to happen. I think that's a fair assessment. So if that does happen is there anybody out there listening right now that would believe that Menzies deserves to come back for next year. And then he's earned to come back for next year. They're going to have to pay him an extra hundred grand next year. If he comes back, I believe to buy out his contract, I believe is somewhere around the vicinity of eight hundred thousand dollars. It is exactly integrated. Yes, I say if I believe because I'm not like you said, I'm not not you might it might appear that I'm always, right? But I'm not always right? So is there anybody out there that believes that Menzies deserves to come back next year in that basic best case scenario, which I think I was being very logical or do you think we have to let them go? Gotta bring another coach in there. And who do you guys think would be a great replacement? I've given my opinions on that. But I like to hear others out there. Do you think Menzies comes back next year? No, I don't if you asked me right now. No, I don't the number to call to five seven five three nine six seven zero two two five seven five three nine six. Oh. And by the way, speaking of UNLV hoops, schedule a great pleasure tomorrow to have in studio, Danny Tarjanian, Dan. He's going to be coming in tomorrow. And obviously I'm gonna ask him about UNLV hoops, one of my questions. One of the first question and ask him is. You know, what would your father? Thank the late great Jerry Tarquin walking into the Thomas and Mack center and seeing maybe three thousand people in the stands, what would your father think about that? And you know, Jerry was very, and that's going to be a very interesting response. Daddy's going to be honest about that. His father was around the program when they hired Dave Rice's father's always been around the program and always supported the program. But. You know, he he supported the hiring of Dave, rice course, Dave rice was one of his players. It just didn't work out, man. That's just the bottom line. It just did not work out. But. Certainly I'm gonna ask him about that any. No, we're going to get into politics. But Danny there's no question about that. We are absolutely going to get into some polish because Danny who is on the right? Who's a Republican? But he's honest, and I respect his opinions got a lot to go over with him. But the bottom line is. How can you be happy? If you're desharnais Francois. How can you be happy with the team that finishes fourth or fifth in arguably one of the worst conferences in the country? How could you be happy with that? Well, you could be happy. If you are looking to move elsewhere, very very soon, and you were just trying to do nothing in the interim make no mistakes. Make no big moves and just a send up the ladder. And that could be the case with her. I'm going to be very very path to a different job as an eighty somewhere else. But you can also take the other side of that and say, well, she wants to make an imprint with that as well. So I mean, I I have no idea what circulating in her head. I have no clue I do believe that if Tony Sanchez lost his last three games of the year. I don't think he would be here. I think winning that Nevada game sealed the deal for him to come back next year. I do think that I'm assuming that even with the fatigue connection. Yes. I do believe that that he probably wouldn't be here. Desert Reid, Francois is probably going to have one of the most difficult decisions. She's had in her entire career at the end of this year. Make no mistake about it. They're not winning the mountain west conference tournament. It's just not going to happen. Nobody's beating Evadne. Are they going to even make the semis? I don't know. I'm not so sure about that. Not sure anybody in the country is being a and that includes in April. That's true. That's true. Let's open up the phone lines. Again, the number to call to five seven five three nine six seven zero two two five seven five three hundred six talking. A little UNLV hoops before we get to Mike Babcock from TMZ sports is gonna join us in the next segment. You might be surprised there are some patriots players that are going to be going to the White House. Some that are not. So we'll we'll get to that. With Mike babka. Coming up talk. A little UNLV hoops. Why are you not showing up to games? Do you think Marvin Menzies gonna be the next day coach next year your thoughts on that to five seven five three nine six? Let's go to Scott, Scott. Thanks for calling in. How are you? What's up, Scott? Gentlemen. Good. I do think not that my opinion matters for anything. But I do think he returns for a fourth year in the main reason being. I think ADP's are afraid to fire somebody in general. There are no rumors of any wrongdoing at the university of Nevada Las Vegas basketball program right now. Meaning their GPA is solid guys are on track to graduate, and there's no recruiting violations, and that's good. She's actually made reference to that several times there's about fifteen other schools that are being intensively investigated by the NCAA and a lot of stuff can come down. None of that is on UNLV right now. So you're right. Yeah. I think that's it. Are you graduating players? Yes. Are you in trouble with the NCAA? Okay. We'll give you another year. I agree with you to a certain extent. You're right UNLV is not a part of any of that stuff. However, people aren't showing up in the stands, and the majority of the fans, let's just call it reality. They don't care the majority of these fans are season ticket holders, the majority of of these people do not care, you know, what they want. They want a good basketball product. We don't have that they want wins. We don't have that. It's arguably one of the worst conferences in the country. So while I don't necessarily disagree with you, Scott. I'm going to tell you right now if they finished the season fourth fifth or sixth and conference the season's over, no postseason. I know a lot of his supporters are gonna say Scott because I argue with them on Twitter every day, they say the team is young. You gotta give them another year. He took over a horrible situation. Blah, blah, blah. The bottom line is Lon Kruger took over a horrible situation. Here you know, what he did Scott. He got them into the NCAA tournament by your three he was winning mountain west conference tournament. I mean, that's you know, and again, you can say well Lon Kruger Marvin Menzies night and day. I would probably agree with that. But with that said, this is a difficult decision. Scott. This is a really difficult decision. And when you talk about positives. You're right Francois was on the show a few weeks back, and she mentioned that the grades and all that stuff. And I and I congratulated her for that congratulated the student athletes for that. But guess what the majority of the fans don't care. That's just the way it is. And she also answered Mark Anderson. She said, you know, we're doing it the right way. Which is exactly what you're attributing to that. That's what you referenced. So you fire them March the fifteenth you take another month you interviewed people at the final four. So that's a mistake. Will you hire you fire you hire somebody in April fifteenth and then four guys transfer your where does that leave? That's a mistake. Ambling scott. I think that's a mistake. I think if I'm the director, which clearly I'm not you have to have some names in mind right now right now is the time that you're contacting people. Hey, we don't know if we're gonna make a coaching change or not. But if we do would you be interested in this job, you gotta be you gotta you gotta make. I'm not saying you interview coaches right now, but you have to be talking to agents right now you have to find out. I am sure that they reached out to Rick Pitino. But I don't think that's going to happen. I think that's a pipe dream for a lot of different reasons. That's all I'm saying, Scott, you you have to you have to be you have to be making that assessment. Now. It'll be interesting to see what happens. It will. Thank you for the call, Scott. All right. You are turning to our J D of basketball. There you go to five seven five three nine six the number to call against seven zero.

"That are itching to play basketball for UNLV, John it comes down to in my opinion. And I look at this has nothing to do with the students. I think students should be going to games regardless. But it comes down to one basic thing. John, and you could tell me whether you agree or not it comes down to bad decisions that the department has made in the last. Oh, six seven years. Would you agree with that? Well, I thought I actually thought they made a great decision firing rice midseason. And I thought they had a great chance. I thought they had Cronin. I got screwed by him. And then they get this wonderful guy. Chris beard, right? Who is a great coach tech fantastic. I mean, if we would have got them, we wouldn't be talking about, you know, being ministration. I mean, they re it was really unlucky HR. You. You seem pretty dialed in who would you like to see as a next men's basketball coach? Well, I I'm not gonna lie. I mean, I would I would love to see Rick Pitino be cutting. The reason I would like to see him just you would immediately get this town crazy again. And I want to come back because it is fun to go to rebel games. They got the I'd love to see the buzz that we had in the ninety. I agree. I agree. I don't think they're going to get Patino. If they did I would be right on board with you, John. He would immediately put people in the seats. He would immediately turn this program. We'd be relevant relevant again. I don't think that's going to happen for a lot of reasons. But I think what it comes down to is the mountain west conference is atrocious. UNLV is not a good basketball team. They don't play an exciting brand of basketball. And that's the main reason why people aren't showing up John. I appreciate your call. Thank you so called John. Thank you. Thank you. Yeah. Five seven five three nine six seven two two five seven five three nine six the number to call in. Jamison. What do you think about that? Good point. Parents do take their children when it's a good quality product. They're gonna take the whole family family of four or six or whatever. Will is that's a very good point. I mean, that's missing you look at the night's games. How many young kids are at those nights? Thousands. What I don't like is. I don't like I'm not saying that John was making excuses per se. But look, I I can me a bunch of teams that are just as bad as UNLV may be worse than they they get more fan support do. Well, here's the thing. You got compare the cities. Now, I will say if you watch the game on television, they're not packed as much as they used to be when they had their glory days with Kawhi in Franklin all those guys they used to be a packed house. They're not selling out anymore. They're having similar this is bad. But they're having similar issues. UNLV is because they're not as good and attendances down throughout the country. But this is still UNLV. No, this is like middle school be team attendance. Here's bad really is. But here's the thing. There's so much more to do in vase. That's true. It's a different. It's a different place luck. When Lon Kruger was coaching. There was still a lot. Do you think? The students are selling the tickets for ten bucks on Craigslist. Check. I'm gonna actually check tonight. Look what maybe maybe twenty or thirty come on come on most of these.

"Pummeling, the ramblers Loyola Chicago. They must have played with three guys out there. Oklahoma battles back against Oklahoma state. Remember Oklahoma for Kruger right there. They were down by seven at the half. I was gonna say, but Oklahoma state you're going to see this. They're shorthanded they kicked three kids off the team. They only have nine players on that team right now. So Oklahoma state. Down in the second half right on you bet. The Cowboys beat in the first half. There you go weather's one of those guys that was booted as well. So keep an eye on that jot that down seventy to sixty one Oklahoma Lon Kruger in the guys getting the win and the cover game staying under the total of one thirty six and a half the closing total opened at one forty two. Wisconsin a nice effort in Champaign. They get the win and the money as a late five and a half got bed down. So Illinois took a little money. Got bet down to four and a half. Total was one thirty seven and a half closing number one forty the opening number stays under the total the whole time seventy two to sixty the final the badger starting to play much better. Keep an eye on Ethan happened. The guys at Davidson knockdown shots Iverson contributes pretzel. They have some players over there. The badgers do seventy two to sixty guard. Got a pretty good squad. They could be a dark horse there in the big ten to do some damage Wyoming fifty nine forty six of win by baker's dozen at home in Laramie again, a Wyoming team. That's so beat up when you look at the injury report. I mean, they have to starters at are out for the year. They had two other starters that were banged up. But they did end up going tonight. I mean this poor team right now. That's how bad San Jose State is in San Jose State losing fifty nine to forty six the final there in Laramie, Wyoming, a seven point favorite got that down to six games stays well under that total one thirty six finishing at just one. Oh, five seventy four fifty one. How about the team? I used to call games for UC riverside, pummeling Cal, poly,.

"Both of these teams can go through some really long scoring droughts, Texas while the teams always thought of really fast and DC ear. They usually did play very fat. They're using twenty seconds that thirty second shot clock on average in in the big twelve play. That's very very slow tempo. So make sure you understand the Texas is not one of those up and down teams, even when the the press kind of before the game down instead of speeding it up. Yeah. I just wanna poor. I add some thoughts on this game. I do want to echo what you said. We're not saying you can't win in power conferences were just saying that you gotta keep in mind that you have a lower expectation of winning just because of the efficiency of the market. So I'm glad that you were a little bit better than I did there. But when it comes to this game. Yeah. Oklahoma's great on defense, and Texas is pretty good defense to the question that I have is at what point does Lon Kruger figure out what to do with this offense. You know, they were. So trae young heavy last year. You've gotta think he's smart enough coach, and it has good enough talent to figure out who his Goto guys really are and put them in a position to succeed. I have to think they hit that stride at some point. I don't know if it's on Saturday. But it's gotta be coming, right? I mean, I would think so I think Texas is one of the best defensive teams in this conference their eighteenth and defensive efficiency in the country. So you know, I I wouldn't expect them to apple a ton of success here. Oklahoma's ninth and eat sensitive isn't the in in the country. So you got some really good defense being played in this game. I think that Oklahoma as well coached. And I I'm not saying the soccer smarter to that coach. I think the, you know has done well enough in the long term that we can't do that. He's the pad coach, but you know, Texas fans have been a little bit disappointed. I'll put it that way. You know, you look at these two teams. Neither opens salve every much. That's pretty important. If you're looking for an under both teams pretty good at defensive rebounding. I need the team all that good at getting second chance. You know? I think that if this totals in the mid one thirty if you could get at one thirty five thirty six I would certainly into the under. And I also think this is a game where we're going to learn a lot about both of these teams Texas needs to win this game lost three straight and the big twelve like, I said, the only ten and seven. Into this game Oklahoma and better safe than his Texas with some of their big wins. So far this year. You know, Florida was a good win for them. They played a tough schedule. I mean, even Wofford looks like a good non conference win at this point. So I think that Oklahoma in better shape than Texas right now. So this game likely means more to Texas, but Oklahoma coming off that loss as.

"About not being in the back to back back to back years in the plane game in the mountain west conference tournament about that. Thanks. Thanks. I appreciate it. Let's go to five seven five three nine six is the number to call. Let's go to John John. Thanks for calling into the Vegas. Take. Our you. Hey, I appreciate you taking my call agree with you on the students. But it I mean, I graduated from UNLV ninety six I've been watching the, you know, be program since eighty three and the bottom line is is the fan you have to win here aren't coming. And you know, the schedule you look at the teams we play Valparaiso. All these teams that come in. We're playing Colorado and Wyoming to of the worst teams in the country. Yeah. Get excited, and then these kind of point of boring basketball. We don't have a lot of faith in him. He doesn't seem to play the players. John excited. John. I I don't disagree with you. And if you notice I'm not really criticizing people like you. And by the way, your opinion matters have been a UNLV Stanford long time, I listened to people like you. Okay. Let the people I'm criticizing John not people like you. I'm criticizing the students that get free tickets that are eighteen nineteen twenty years old. Just go to the games, you know. That's all I'm saying, I am not in no way, shape or form criticizing people like you. And I understand where you're coming from look, I you're right. The brand of basketball is not exciting. But you know, what I did hear that about long Kruger to Lon Kruger was a defensive minded coach defense. I the offense wasn't always pretty, but John, you know, why there were people in the stands. He won basketball games. Right. Yeah. Yeah. And that's what it comes down to impart of UNLV's problem. They do Stewart terrible job of advertising. It there's not great school. There's not a lot of spirit on campus. Yeah. I it's just really bad with that. It is that commuter thing a little bit. And we don't have that school pride and the students aren't just as connected, and they just don't advertise it out to the public. They should there is no reason because it's a fun. It's still a fun event. We still have great athletes, man. Yeah. I I just it's unfortunate. I can't believe how bad the program got this. It's it's really unbelievable. We could barely beat Wyoming and Colorado state. I agree. I agree and people some people in the meteoroid like, hey types, the first in the conference they started the year two and people like that are morons. I couldn't agree with you March. I couldn't agree with you more. I say loss to take you break it down to four hats. They lost to have the to the worst team. They were down and to have Colorado state is two hundred and sixtieth in the country. And Wyoming is worse there if they're not even below three hundred. Okay. You look at teams that are better John Columbia. I mean there there's some of the Ivy league teams are better. I mean, it's really bad. I'll tell you that you're right on that. We're is a tremendous coach he changed things up just keeping the same style. He's playing the incredible going defense, and the rebels will be dismantled when they go in there because they do not have an answer for that. I don't disagree. I disagree. John. And and you know, what I feel your pain, my friend. You've been in an thank you for the call, by the way. I appreciate the call John. Thank you. I feel John's pain he's been a fan for a long time. And and I I don't blame him for not wanting to go against by.

"For those UNLV fans listeners, you might remember this name Oscar Bellefield member he was our former point guard under Lon Kruger and Dave rice. He's going to be joining us tomorrow. Find out what Oscar's up to what does he think about the state of UNLV basketball right now? So Oscar will be joining us tomorrow. So that'll be a lot of fun JD. I don't know if you've been watching the news today, but there's a lot going on. Of course, Nancy Pelosi was sworn in as the new speaker of the house. Here's something positive. I want to start with. Okay. This is this is positive. This is a good thing. Okay. Forget about whether you're democrat or Republican the fact that right now, congress is the most diverse it has been in history. That is a really really good thing. And for anyone that is against that. You are a moron. Okay. We had the first Muslim woman she came to America as a refugee twenty three years ago with her father. Okay. She is now a member of congress. We should be proud of that more people should be talking about that. We have the first two native Americans to serve. I think it sets a great precedence for this country. And why they are the first I have no idea. But I'm glad it's starting now. Really is there anyone out there that opposes the fact that we are going to have people of different descent. Serving us in congress. Is there anyone that would be against that? Because I think if you are against that you're a racist. I'm glad that this is the most diverse. I'm not sure you could say the same thing about the Trump administration, which is basically all white. Our country is very diverse. That's what makes this country. Great. Same thing should happen in the White House. The same thing should happen in congress. I want people of.

"FM seven twenty AM K, Don. From my voice squeaked up a little bit there back to purely that was a little weird. Anyway, welcome back to the show. A reminder tomorrow, we will be having channel eight Ron few trial going to be joining us in studio. So that'll be a lot of fun. And also a reminder if you guys missed the show Friday, we had a nice announcement. We are expanding the show to two hours a day that will be starting in January January second I believe I don't think we're on the air January first it will be gone six to eight PM starting in January. So we're all really excited about that. Okay. So UNLV basketball. I'm known to be critical of the basketball program from time to time JD as yourself. I think we're both pretty honest on the air. Anyway, UNLV loses to Illinois on the road on Saturday two and seven seventeen I know they've had a tough schedule. But he's not a good basketball team. This is the quote that Marvin Menzies said after the game he said, I hate to say, I'm proud of my guys on a loss. But it's the truth. They fought things could have went left on them. Again. I don't know. I it just it's just me. You lose two two and seventeen on the road. You don't want your basketball coach to make excuses. So I. Go on Twitter as I normally do when I get into it with people at times JD, you know, that and one guy. Oh this. Yes. So what somebody on Twitter names map? I told them I respect the fact that he doesn't wanna give his last name. Anyway, he his his position is is that he was glad when Lon Kruger left, and he doesn't think Menzies should be fired. I haven't necessarily said men's you should be fired either. But I don't understand how anyone in the world can say that they're happy that Lon Kruger is not the basketball coach at UNLV. So Matt is a standup guy. He knows that we are going to get into it on the air, and I respect him from calling in and and having a little debate with me, Matt I appreciate you coming on. How are you? I'm doing good. Thank you. I like I said, I do I do mean that NAT you're a standup guy for calling in. And I appreciate that. Okay. So before I give my be all I want to give you the opportunity you've been a season ticket holder for a long time supporter of the program, which. I haven't been a season ticket holder. I've been. The. Be about ten games or so in my lifetime. Okay. So you haven't been to a ton of games. But I would imagine you follow the team on a regular basis. Is that fair to say? Yeah. Okay. And you're very opinionated when it comes to UNLV basketball. So why is it that you feel like you're happy with the fact that Lon Kruger left when he did. Why is that a positive explain that? Please. There's two main reasons the first reason is like feel that UNLV. He reached the ceiling. Elapsed. Five years. He made four NCAA tournament one NIT. And then the four years you made the tournament where from to win one win two one and done. And then after seven years was up. It appears to me anyway at the ceiling for the program with him in charge is going to be. Seven to ten seed then ornament rounds of thirty two. Okay. So let me stop let me stop you there. And I wanted to get your thoughts on that. After Lon Kruger left. How many NCAA tournament wins? Did we have? We have one. Thank you. Yes. Right. And what has happened since Lon Kruger left the UNLV basketball program. Have we improved every year or have we gotten worse year to year? No the program hasn't gotten better. It's gotten worse. Right. So how can you make that argument? I don't understand. I mean, look before I give more of my opinions, Matt let me just read off some facts. Okay. Fact by year, three Lon Kruger was thirty and seven he wanted conference championship back to back years. He made it to a Sweet Sixteen. He also was responsible for bringing us the mendenhall center, which is far cry from anything that either of these last two coaches have done in their tenure. How could you be happy with the fact that Lon Kruger left the program with all due respect that I don't understand. Reason why is because like I was saying I feel like he reached the ceiling which was that. We were going to be around the seven to ten what's wrong with that. What's wrong with that? There were twelve or thirteen thousand people in the in the Thomas and Mack center. The place was jumping the program was winning money. Students were in the seats. They were winning March games in March. Why is that a negative? I don't understand you you keep saying, well, it was a ceiling. He couldn't have gone any higher. First of all he made the final four Oklahoma with buddy healed who I think was an number eighty seven is barely top one hundred, you know, a senior in high school and he made the final four. So how could you even I don't even agree with your argument that it was a ceiling who's to say that Lon Kruger couldn't have gotten UNLV do a final four. Reason why say that is because with one Ruger he didn't recruit at a high enough level to get us there. How did that work out with Dave rice? How did that work out with Dave rice? He got us a bunch of NBA players, right? Stevens Zimmerman while they're not in the NBA now. But Zimmerman he got us spend, he got us Christian. Would he got us Rashad von how did that work out? No, it's to work out, all the wealth. No it didn't. But the point is that because of the final four championship you have to have NBA players. There's not one team. What do you mean? To win a championship. Lon Kruger didn't have a bunch of NBA players when he went back. I mean, he had Joel Anthony. But even if he won back to back mountain west conference championships, he got to a Sweet Sixteen with Kevin Kruger with all due respect. I mean, I don't think you have to have an enormous amount of NBA talent to make it to the NCAA tournament and to win conference championships. Do you? No. But I have a higher ambition or UNLV's and being in a seven to ten seed in the tournament and only making the rounds of thirty two. So you're you're spoilt the target year spoiled. You didn't they? They may be. But this is. Gonzaga can make a national championship game in this day and age, then why not UNLV because with all due respect. I think the Las Vegas is a better city and that UNLV Fedor university. But you you said we we've talked about Krueger. But you've also on the record as saying, you know, you want Marvin Menzies to say to stay, and I've I haven't said on the record that I want him fired. But in three years, what does he done that? You think is a positive in the in the program moving in the right direction. As far as positives. Go I do think the recruiting is a positive. He doesn't have a point guard. He hasn't recruited a point guard. Well, I actually disagree taxes for nineteen bringing in Anderson he's bringing in Josh Pierre. What did he do last year? What is far as cruelly Chrysler? No Boston today out you brought in Amari hardy. No robotham is not what I would call a legitimate starting point guard of the mountain west conference. But okay. All right. So you're argument with Marvin Menzies you think he's done a good job recruiting is that what I'm getting. Yeah. The thing I would say that I think is broad abilities. Offseason. Wasn't one transfer. And that was one of the day. Bryce was the constant sorrow. But what what part of stability is when you're playing in the mountain west conference play in game. I mean, you you keep talking about. Well, you know, we should go back to make final fours and winning a national championship. It's probably not going to happen when you're playing in the mountain west conference play in game. And you're picked what six in the mountain west conference. Right. You have to show signs of improvement. Let's be honest. You have to win. Okay. That's what Lon Kruger did. Okay. From the beginning of the year to the end of the year, Lon Kruger's teams got better in the first year and second year. Can you make that argument for Marvin Menzies have they gotten better or worse? Be honest. As far as better or worse goes. Well. I mean, they were just awful the whole year. The reason they went. Seven six in non conference play that year was because the schedule was really bad. And then once they got to the mountain west the competition level one up and then they won four and fourteen. Second year. One eleven well, let me while you're thinking let me ask you another question. If UNLV is back into the plane game in the mountain west conference tournament in back to back years. What would you say to Marvin Menzies you're happy with what he's doing? You think you know, give them a three year contract extension? Like, they did with Dave rice is that what you want? I wouldn't say that I was happy. But but winning is and doesn't happen overnight. Krueger was able to do it. Lon Kruger was able to do it by year three by year three they were top twenty five in the country. Hair or walk. Your he inherited a horrendous. He inherited a horrendous situation. Go ahead J J D wants to ask you a question. Go ahead. So you aspire for UNLV to make the final four and attention to be a national championship contender right now. How far away do you think the program is from getting there, and we'll the current recruiting situation and Marvin Menzies ability to develop talent how long will take to get to that point. Or or final or probably. Seven seven or eight years but in the mountains. Out west. Another year or two. So you think it's acceptable to pay coach a half a million dollars a year and to give the coach five years to be competitive in the mountain west conference, which is not a very good conference at the side's, Nevada and maybe Utah state. There's a lot of bad teams in this conference. You think it should take somebody five years to do that? I think you're five rebels to win the mountain west. And then by next year. I think they could be. The call. This.

"And the job that he did on former wildcat marcus foster against creighton and then the job he did against lyles of of unbc was exemplary and i i have to tell you this i have to say this seeing that you nbc team two games there in charlotte i don't know if it shows on tv how good those guys really are i love their team man they that they were a hard out that was a really good basketball team to be a sixteen and that's the thing by the way folks if you're just tuning in wire thompson the voice of kansas state sports is on sports x radio has been on before and just just love the guy and i of course kelly in vegas and so many others out here in the silver state that of course it's a silver and black state now but are still are are proud kansas state alums and just love that team and of course my good pal lon kruger although he's coaching at oklahoma is a rival now in the big twelve still kansas kansas state guy through and through back then and of course talked to my good pal greg renting an assistant coach for kermit davis at middle tennessee state and by the way shout out for a coach granting he interviewed today for the middle tennessee state head coaching job love to see him get there but he had many many years there kansas state as well and then creighton and a unlv but just another great guy in the industry just love it but kansas state to me is just you know a team that they're not intimidated by anybody and a creighton team that they played in the first round why it is a team that you know mcdermott doesn't you know a lot of people thought you know what his kid went onto the nba that that's it this run is over he's going to be done and that guy's just a phenomenal coach for you guys to go in there and show another side again we saw the the defensive struggle and the lack of scoring struggled but you got it out against unbc but the game against creighton my goodness you guys got off to that quickstart never looked back well that's it and.
