I'm kind of a fan of what you all did and because I'm primarily writer, this is a conversation I've been looking forward to for a long time. I want to start with a question about how the room actually function because this show appropriately enough is kind of like a Swiss watch, there are a billion spinning plates. As collaborators, how did you pull this off? How did you manage to do all of these things separately and together and make it seem so seemless Will I have two kids? I've given birth twice and I think there's sort of an analogy to to being on the other side of giving birth where you look back and you're like I literally have no idea how my body did what it did and I have no memory of what happened I kind of feel that way about looking back on the almost two years we spent writing this show I'm like Holy Shit. How did that happen? I don't know what do you guys? Do you guys think well, you know what? For me I had never been in a room this diverse before and it wasn't just the ratio of. The journalists there were playwrights and I wasn't necessarily used to that like I come from primarily the procedural world and to come to a room where everything was approached by character, and there was just a different way of breaking story and worked in network. Before it's the machine, it moves at a pretty rapid pace. It would wash one of the wonderful things about it is that we actually had time to develop a chemistry with each other. Stacey. For me, it was my second show that I had worked on I did the TV show happy for watchmen but really didn't talk much in that Roman. So Pretty Green and being able to be a part of the show and seeing all of the mechanics seeing people that were so incredible at hitching. So intelligence. So in love with watchmen. Had really ever heard of the comic book but I, was talking to David about how he made the decision in terms of which people he chose for the writer's room and he was saying he really likes people who ran hot and I feel like everybody cared so much about. Not only making the show truthful but like racial aspects of it, we all just cared so much. I think because we all run hot, it's reflected in show maybe it is that part of why this all worked is because it's not like you all knew that you were writing something that was going to be sort of profoundly impactful on the environment you were working on a show in and of itself, and that's all that mattered and you didn't have the weight of expectation there necessarily. But what you did have was a very fearless approach to topics that a lot of people are just uncomfortable dealing with although obviously the show is very much centered on race. You're also tackling the persistence of white supremacy in law enforcement. The role that the media including television shows plays in perpetuating racist thought. Generational trauma and the way inherited pain damages the people who come after. And you're even tackling the kind of inherent nationalism of the Superman of the hero itself. And you did it all it seems to me on my side of the TV without fear or blinking or compromise. But I'm kind of curious because you all work together in the room how you navigated that space together to be free enough to screw up. But not being so free that you end up hurting each other. I, think the show for me. It just happened to come at a time where there has been such a major shift and America's perception of race and policing and I think that police lean and to a larger extent the criminal justice system has always been a tool of white supremacy. And being former officer, I can say that you know I'm a witness to it but I think the response to racism feels different. One of the things that really attracted me to watch men when I had the meeting with Damon. was that he was like, okay. One of the things that we definitely WANNA tackle is racism and policing and the idea of masking gain, and all of that was very attractive to me because all I kept thinking about, what would a world where police wear masks look like? Because knowing how the system works now and how it oppresses communities of color and how it negatively impacts people of color while they're showing their face. So imagine what that would be like if the police were mass,

Travel to Lombok, Indonesia

"Today? We're GONNA talk about lumberjack. The island of Lombok in Indonesia. Okay let's put it on a map first of all. I'm not sure that everybody can find Indonesia on a map but we're in the Western Pacific that's right in between the Pacific. Can the Indian Ocean. But where is the island of Lombok. Usually the way I tell people to locate Lombok is most people have heard of Bali and Bali. Alley is the island directly east of Bali in the the sort of archipelago of Indonesia which is more or less near the center of the Indonesian is winds. And that's where it is right next to the Bali. Okay and it right next to Bali and then also not that far from the Allen de Jakarta is is on. The name of that island escapes me for the moment at Java Java Java actually said it was near the center it's actually not news and draw wasn't considering Sumatra which is the largest of the islands and another interesting place to explore but you have Java which is the largest of the Indonesian islands rubs up against Peninsular Malaysia Asia. If you follow it east. You hit Carta in the island of Java next to Java you have Bali and then right after Bali a little further east you have lumbar well and people have heard about most of those islands. We're talking about except potentially Lombok. Why are we talking about Lumbar? Well for one and I guess we're talking about it because I just spent five weeks there with my family A couple months ago. We've spent a good deal of time in various parts of Indonesia. We'd he'd heard good things about Lombok and the reasons I would suggest going is especially for those who have been Bali. Feel that it's becoming overdeveloped overdeveloped and maybe in all the baggage that comes with that Lombard is a is a simpler place. It's less developed even though it is starting to gain tourism dollars too little sleep beer but it still has a lot of the same charm in the natural wonders of what you would find in Bali now as you know Oh and many of your listeners. Probably Know Bali Hindu island smack in the middle of of Indonesia which is a predominantly Muslim country. Right Lombok is not long is a Muslim. As Long Island nation may be island. Nation is too strong a word but I mean before Indonesia was a country all of these islands were at their own distinct cultures. Their own distinct getting ethnic tribes as well and so that element of Lombok. We found to be very interesting to have. It has a touch of the tropical paradise that Bali is but it comes from a completely different cultural background. And I don't know the history of the country of Indonesia but I'm guessing that it was conglomerates during the colonial period under into the Dutch. That's true okay. With my also limited knowledge of that these were all their own countries but then the Dutch spice merchants and colonists lists made it into one place far as I know there are still tensions between one part of Indonesian another in very vast cultural and linguistic differences assist between them for example on Lombok the predominant at this is the sack people and Sasa has their own language their own food their our own customs that you would not find in say Sumatra or Java or any of the other islands. Okay what kind of activity do you recommend mend for Lombok Guano you like to Kinda give a week long itinerary and give you a week or two weeks. Of course. We're going someplace relatively remote here. I'll give you an ambitious week or or perhaps a solid two week itinerary. I think most people would fly into to Lombok even though you can also I should say that a lot of people. We'll take speedboats or slow boats over from Bali. It's that close okay. We're talking twenty minutes. Thirty minutes on a speedboat or less. Oh Wow okay. So it's it's very Mary clubs. I would start in the Sing Gigi area which is to the West. The airport is in the sort of the southwestern region. Sing cing Gigi. Beach is a beach area to the west the island and in Kuta not to be confused with Bali Kuta but there is a Kuta area to to the south of the island. Both of these have exceptional snorkeling surfing scuba diving. I think that would be probably the easiest a place to start if you just WanNa have some laidback beach time. Okay I'm guessing if we don't want some laid back beach time. We probably shouldn't be spending our time and going all the way to Indonesia that that's part of what you come here for. I would think so. We certainly do an mason kind of strange especially if we started talking travel. We've lived in a lot of islands in beach areas. We're not actually big beach. People like that we burn easily. And I'm we. I'm talking about my family. Because aren't we have altogether all the time. I burn easily the sun and sand and all of that but I love beaches at night but we are big water. People would have my kids love to surf. My kids like snorkeling is. I'm sure I'll mention in the interview. They both got their junior patty scuba diving lessons while during this trip. And there's all of those kinds of things while you're in the Gigi area speaking of kind of water one of the things that we really like to do more than saltwater as we like freshwater what are we like streams and waterfalls and Lombok is just riddled just like Bali and a lot of ways lots of beautiful tropical waterfalls in rainforests and forest. And they're reachable. You you can hire a driver or as we do we rent scooters and with all the risks that that entails and I could get into that if you needed to we probably should. We probably should. Because it's good that you know that but I'm not sure that everybody who rents scooters understands that there are some some risks involved in scooter. Travel saying you shouldn't do it but you should be aware of it so when you say you rent scooters with all the risks involved tell me a little more about your thought process process year. You're traveling with two kids. I recall a wife and yourself and you're on to scooters for scooters one scooter the typical Indonesia uh-huh in Vietnam. We were all four on one scooter. But when we are in most places it's better to have to scooters in one parent in in one child. I think what you're getting at is traffic in southeast. Asia is is is a little hectic. It doesn't follow all the rules. Stop Lights and you are just suggestions. Yes right there are parts of Indonesia that I would not ride a scooter in Sumatra. We've have never ridden written a scooter at least in northern Sumatra where we've been because the roads were in poor condition. Plus there's lots of construction equipment logging trucks trucks. You don't want to have to be run off the road those kinds of things now. That being said in Lombok just like in Bali the roads are in pretty good condition and if you have experienced riding riding scooters in this kind of environment I would recommend it that being said a lot of travel insurance companies will not cover any sort of accidents or damages damages if you do not have a scooter motorcycle license in your home

Should be interesting at we we have anything bad to say about it really kind of excited. But what do you think lands? Are you looking forward to it? Let us know. And if not why not well, if you go getting it, but yeah, it should be. I think interesting that's the general consensus. They are. Well, it goes, and it's not actually like is a street circuit because they have already said the the tourist board there in the country that it's Beck simply going to be a circuit. Because of the way it's going to be entirely retirement and brief paved with performance asphalt, or whatever it is. Than Silverstone's problem. Sorry. It does look like album park the Formula one tribe because it it's going to be kept. But it looks like and Bill and a park as well. So yeah, I think they're going to build it. And then turn into a roads. I would like to say it wasn't an easy nor Thailand is talent was I mean because all sorts of their this weekend. So that's what talent was coming to the. Hello. So everybody tuned in from Indonesia Israel on the on the older Motoji p Facebook groups. Yeah. Hello, oh translate into. Hello. Yeah. It does anyone any particular pertinent opinions? Ed. Just last week him. I've actually grown is grown only. Because I think it was the oldest Bovill motorcycle news. They published of stories in they have a computer generated image of wall, circuit will look like of that. And it the attention to these Simpson's trucks safety is gone in that which is the biggest concern obviously with running street races. Is it looks better than the of penman circuits? I mean, there's so many gravel Trump's lots of long run off every slow the bikes down as full of considering the citizen. Yes. I mean, it's easy to rushing with Indonesia, given the cycle racing on the pattern two months of cycles in general two that is just so huge. You could easily see this going to be spectators lining, the circuit all around the coals. So it it looks like the organizers they've certainly really thought this. In what he is probably in the in the planning this planet all safety aspects full any ticket street second take so much done. But it looks really cute. Actually, I really hope they don't you? Get miss Rochelle fly ground in. We actually got racing that. Yeah. Certainly as I said, I think he's most people's general consensus about this about this new. Quote street race, even though it's not technically a it is technically. But it isn't it isn't if you know what I mean. Anyway, if you've got any opinions on it as I said getting touch with those at 'em sport radio on Twitter, motorsport.

"Has. Been monitoring this and joins us I Michael Hi, David so what is the latest. So far this sounds like this was a pretty. Big one This one was a lot bigger than. Last week we know the earthquake was centered about six, miles below the ground in the north Lombok most of the deaths and damage occurred in the north many of the dead were killed by falling debris. According to. The national, disaster mitigation agency with thousands of houses damaged and the, images from Indonesian television David striking I mean you saw people running onto their homes out of balls out of the airport is building shook, when the quake hit and I saw one incredible scene men praying at a mosque and one. Man steady thing himself all holding onto the swaying wall next to him while they, continue to pray and then they'll just footage of men at another mosque feeling the. Quake running out and. Then the camera catches the ceiling starting to fall in just after they fled, it was really remarkable thousands of people are now staying in emergency shelters set up in open places and a lot of them. Will probably stay there tonight some because they have nowhere else to go and some fearful. Of aftershocks. And there have been many so far? They've been no reports of foreigners being among the Dead but the spokesman for the national disaster. Mitigation agency says the death toll is likely to rise and the earthquake was strong, enough to be felt on the neighboring island of Bali which of course is India's. Indonesia's most popular tourist. Destination so if the death toll might rise we might not know who out, there might be in dire straits I mean survivors who need help you mentioned there have been shelters but but art does it. Look like they're actually getting relief to. People who who might really need at this moment They are getting relief they, are getting relief to people but they they say they have not reached all the people who do need that relief They're sending doctors they're sending medical equipment, they're sending food they're, sending water they're sending digging equipment and whatever. Else they need but you know the power and communications and. The worsted areas David remain a, problem the airports on Bali and Lombok are open so that's a good thing. In terms of getting supplies in and there's a lot of people especially foreign tourists who are trying. To get out, two quakes, in a week that's enough. Summer saying we're done and many airlines are now. Trying to, add flights to accommodate them but the priority, of course helping those in immediate need those. Who can't leave two. Quakes in a week I mean, is this, a region that just I mean that word quakes are just not that uncommon They're not an uncommon The last one of the damage wasn't as, bad as this one a dozen people were killed last week and hundreds were left stranded for a few days on the slopes of mount Rinjani in the north before. They could be rescued but to earth quakes in a week are not uncommon according to several seismologists. That we spoke with Okay Michael Sullivan reporting for us on this earthquake.
