After drought andfailedharvests, people of Madagascarreduced to eating mud

"Years of drought. In with what little the people of madagascar have managed to grow destroyed by flash flooding more than one point three million in crisis in some are even eating ground up clay just to survive movement restrictions relating to covid nineteen has also made it impossible for the poorest of the poor to find work to tide them over the lean season the world food program or p has warned in an interview with you and uses daniel johnson. Wfp's regional director for southern africa. Lola cash through explains the un agency his helping by empowering communities to withstand future climate shocks. The situation basically has been over the last five years with recurring droughts and only one good harvest and we have heard about it. Before in september we immediately had to come in and attend areas that we have never supported as well for program before because the crisis will saw huge. That success more tally. This is what we're talking about. How many people are you helping. And how many people are in need at this moment in the ground south of madagascar grants would gas in december. We supported five. Hundred thousand people almost half a million. We need to scale up to at least nine hundred thousand adults. They one point three million that are in dire need at this moment. Who are the most in need. The most need basically the poorest of the poor those people that in fact they have sometimes they produce small harvests but having been able to produce due to the lack of water. An incredible sunday's storms. That have hit this year. The harvest has been buried under sand. Basically if you want a picture and those ones also who migrate to cities to look for labor due to covid nineteen having been able to find any labor anywhere even in the fields or even in the city's so basically the situation is much worse than what we have seen in decades. Would we are talking now in the past. We've reported on the situation amount and recently we were hearing that people were forced to scavenge for cactus leaves cactus pears and eating leaves with some salt and some sugar. I mean this is just nowhere to live. Why can we not get in there immediately and do more to behind as we have been doing more we. The government will bank agencies. We having working on resilience bidding activities in a number of districts in the suit and we have been doing quite a lot building on irrigation trying to stop the dunes from moving sand occupies the fields the arable lands working with the communities. What we call foot for us activities. Let's say a conditional transfers that people get food or cash but they do something to improve the livelihoods and that has worked in the communities and this is where we have done most of this work. It has been bedtime this year. Let me yes report. But we are not doing enough. We have to also do much more. We have to help the people to get much more resilient in these very difficult climate change times where we know will never rain enough in south of madagascar so with much more. It's great to hear about the resilience building and certainly there seems to be more awareness that southern africa madagascar is at more risk of climate shocks. So is that how the humanitarian approach is changing is to promote resilience by getting the communities. Involved is what we call. If you want the nexus between humanitarian recovery and development with really need to move from year to year support of variable able to move them into more resilient as is to be able to feed themselves to be able to have water. If i'm eligible and to find water to be able to move their foods and have markets where they can buy if they receive social safety nets and social protection castro transfer. So that's the area where we all have agreed. This house in madagascar strategy long-term term strategies but not a gasket isn't poll everywhere it produces vanilla and lots of people are seeing that hollywood movie about madagascar and the wonderful wildlife and the natural riches that the country has so. Why isn't it doing more to help itself. It might sound a bit ruthless. But why isn't more being done in country to empower people to help themselves two days a lot being dining country but is not enough. Say in fact. It's very poor country if you look at. The human development index is very poor in general is true that samaria survey productive days rise by neela species etc. But it's not everybody who can benefit. The population is densely populated. It has also berry berry big promise. China change like it ocean lot of land goes to the days deforestation because of days. Nothing for the populations to eat. So tell

Brian Flores on Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa: Hopefully we see improvement next week

"A good game out in the desert this weekend, Dolphins and Cardinals Here's Brian Flores on his thoughts of to his first start last week up against the Rams. They got the victory, but only 93 passing yards in a game for two a tongue go by Lola. You know some good places and bad place. We're making the corrections now out of the way that we could get fixed. Got his first time out. No again some good some bad and hopefully with Mrs on the movement. Bella checking in there. In that response, he sounded as if he was Bill Belichick. Flora's, though five ones last year for and three this year, that's a team fighting for a playoff spot. I don't think they win this weekend against the Cardinals, but if they do That's a team that's going to be five and three. We talked about a lot more. I hope to a balls out this weekend.

"This article reads I'm Georgina Gordon this week like us is Lola Shawnee who is the founder and Director of Archaic Festival, which will feature more than one hundred and seventy major speakers from across books, poetry, music, theater, and art. It sounds like an absolutely amazing experience and because it's digital, we can all watch it from wherever we are in the world. Layla thanks so much for agreeing to speak to us about this festival. Very happy to be here. Thank you for having me Tell us about it. What was the hundred? Did it begin? Well. I'm a writer myself. I've written novel and three books of poems which means I've been invited to festivals around the world in Europe in America and in some of the markets that. My Book is available in and a lot of the time because my book is about polygamy within a Yoruba context of Nigerian context. I would get asked all sorts of questions and I would feel really strange when the time came for me to be critical like super critical about about some of the aspects of my culture and I would feel that way especially because I was looking into the audience on a lot of the time, there wasn't one back face so it was just to me and I would say to myself but you know these guys here you know then the ones that need to be hearing this, we need to be having these conversations on the African continent especially because these are the people who understand almost instinctively the subject matter off a lot of the books that are coming out of the African continent. So I decided it was important to have this sort of gathering. My wanted it to be high quality I used to be a teacher for many years. So it was very important to me that it was of the highest quality and world standard I didn't want anyone saying, oh, just because it's Nigeria it's going to. Be An bogged down with the not the issues no..

"Turn yourself on yet. And then about one of the things. I really lofty Describing the orgasmic space and it gets really like fractionally and obscure and not like an. That's one of the things i really love. One of my books of the trilogy of books kind of one of the of by saying like people who are separatists through physical separation far away from each other they can meet on their gas. Make plain off that point if they both organism at the same time. I think even talk me at the same time. No matter where they are they will unite in this meeting. Point and so. I get really crazy into falling direness rabbit hole of describing an orgasm in like as a celestial experience crazy sometimes and they're putting a lot of fantasy in your diet at the same time be. That's you're talking about. The clockwork butterfly. Trilogy is a ads trying to do my homework. But i was like a trill time to get into that right now so i have the clockwork i am. I am overwhelmed that you knew the title like seriously but let's see who but i'm a deep fantasy guy. So when i saw that in nearby i was like well. I want to know about this. And i'm kind of curious where that intersection cave free. Because it seemed like you're combining influences from a lot of different. I mean just the way that you described. The played of touching fingers at the point of orgasm like that's next level sci-fi shit. I'm here for. Oh yes a whole in right exactly. Can i tell you the end of it because honestly nobody really reads it our listeners. We you is. The best ending ever happened kenny. Let me tell you learned we. Are you deserve to spoil it if anyone's going to spoil it stephen lola l. The last remaining people have have a massive giant orgy diet. So my wheelhouse. Yeah in the ver- nearing the end of america. Massive orgy so that that's the way to do. Yeah fae died. Fate i guess medically what what was in your in your your brain diet as you were writing this like. Do you know where you're going war and what was happening with. Did your sex life live anywhere up to any of this or was this like just pure fantasy and imagination. I well well. And that's the male species the male gender of the male gender men sperm. Making people are dying there's no sperm and it's not just humans it's every species isn't the planet so the sperm as all dying and so there's certain if you were women in the society you you get chosen to become a collector and it's because special you may have special skills and certain departments to to get the remaining male to ejaculate happy fit sperm and so it's all about so. I was very fairy honored when someone reviewed and said it was like a sexy handmaid's tale. 'cause they're very cert- dystopia in you know i it's really though making it into an audio book just audio poke to snow unsan like am because routes it like five the first book like five years ago and regent going. Oh my god. That's really long where it's held even pronounce them. Is i know that word look for dictionary and then look up online and get you. Click on the dc. It is an american accent so this probably quite a few words. China say weird half scottish half american dictionary pronunciation. That's that's such an interesting thing with with hetty audio literature erotic literature. Because i feel like you get to a place. Where like you are you do start grasping at different variations of words. You don't use the same ought to just because like when we have sex like funny enough. We talked about this last week. Where it's like you almost fall into a shortage of vocabulary just like fuck. Fuck fuck fucking fuck me fuck fuck. It's something that you think about. I mean is that something that comes up in your personal life and your erotic light for or is this edmund normally. Yeah like and like when. I'm having sex. Go like the only thing i can. Cohen says ou fuck me for me in the bedroom. No i would not disappoint. Here's the weird thing. I'm super super silent. I'm super snow that we interviewed in colorado writer Earlier this week and she said the same thing Silent it must you go on. Are you just narrating in your head. The whole time. It must be is weird. So weird thing i mean i think no i think you like your m we sit downs right neurotic story. You're in your head about what's going on if you're in the physical space of actually brad having sex and it's a different experience because you're trying to describe and it's like watching a film and then describe in films your friend laser and trying to make it interesting so that person feels like they watching that same foam but it's so it's a completely different thing and one of the things is when i'm writing. I see the scene and then translate the scene into the words. Type it interesting okay. So you're fantasizing basically if you writing. You're like fantasizing and then you picture that and like okay. Let me just describe what i saw. Yeah do you do or do you. Just do it as you go or do you have like an arc or an outlying like i know it's going to end with an where everyone dies or i didn't know that was like toys if it's like watching it yourself. It's almost like it's like you're not making up. That's what it feels like. You're just watching it and translating it. So that's why sometimes it's quite a surprise when you read it back and and so one of the things that i'm attell Stories as well for other writers in a for me. And i love that. I'm one of the things tips. I always would say to the spiralling writes. Would be to just. Don't don't bother. Don't bother watching what you're typing. Just few what you want to feel. Make yourself rise to see what comes out and don't look at the words on the screen. Just let let should come on on your fingers. Just let your fingers speak and then you might look at the screen and you might not be able to make sense of it but if you can decipher and between those fragments. Were when he put them together. Like that's when.

"War is it a is it a level of factor a world of fuck the world of a world of fuck a world of fuck. Yeah a world of fuck The god it's so bad at the house. The vernacular nar are high tells everyone doing. Hello typical radio intro stephen. This is slowly The cat our our guest today has been flustered in the most charming. God i love a scottish jaksa. Man i just love i. Just let the un. This is such a charring episode today. Hope everyone is good and finding themselves in they're happy roddick's we have a double-header analysis number two of our dirty writer streak of dirty. I have to say you've been doing a fantastic job of marking the guests into each other. I don't know those reserves. But i'm appreciate how you're doing this like what there's just you putting out energy into the world you're like really scientifically coordinating this but every episode seems to flow on the next in a really unique way that i couldn't quite penalty. This is our second erotic literature. Happy sewed in a row in a row last week last week. Really left me feeling like a dirty talk more of this. It's really interesting. I love like just the two different styles and approaches So different so different. Yeah our guest. This week is tabitha. Rain tabitha is on erotic over. Who's been writing erotic. A lab who has a large body of work which includes her. Do book drenched. Which are kind of shorter. Tantalize labeled the subtitle have drenched is tentatively easing tales to make you glow so fitting for her She also wrote a trilogy. Called the clockwork butterflied trilogy. And she is the inventor of the ruby glow vibrator a writable vibrator a writable vibrator. Sit in your seat and to have grand way. Designed desks chairs really. I mean hell. Yeah ed we get into it. She now of the really cheap. She loves that stuff. Somebody's she yeah. She really does glow when she talks about erotic literature and erotic fiction she loves the community. She loves the the process and she really gets into it this week. Yeah what about what about me. What did you. What did you after last episode did you. Did you leave erotic literature head space like where you were you writing. I think actually like almost like got kicked my butt a little bit. Because i have. I've been writing not necessarily erotica probably more on the lines of like peekaboo than than tabitha For as far as content goes. But i have a lot of short stories chronological short stories that like choppers at feed into each other. And i just haven't touched it for walks so much other shit going on. But it's there and i always wanted to do it and i. I submitted a couple of short stories cheaper. Listenable that Are going to be coming out of written for frolic But i think it's more that i'm like. Oh i wanna get back into that and do that. But i just i don't have the time right now but it's always on the docket and i'm just i keep trying to free up time to get back to it. Are you able to get yourself in in kind of an erotic head space when you do that because that would strike me as being a little out of character for you i mean i kind of right in a similar way tabitha but even when. I'm doing my audio erotica. All i pointed out like plant a scene where i don't know exactly where everything's gonna go. I know a couple moments. I know the feeling i wanna get or get across and i just kind of close my eyes and just picture stuff. Maybe not touch myself. Like a radically. But if i'm telling the listener to like place a hand on their neck. I'm doing that too. Yeah so i'm more. I do go somewhere thing where i'm either going to you know. Make up a scenario where i'm not writing for a particular person or i recount something that just happened And write about things that way to use. But i don't do a lot of like the only imagining i would do is creating a scenario like in my head of things that are happening and it's usually also very vague in a good way Yeah interesting it allows both a listener to create their own thing from it. But then it's also just 'cause. I'm so specific. I don't even know what i necessarily want it so i just keep it. Keep certain things you specificity where it's needed. I have such a hard time with writing bike. And i really get myself into a rut. And it's funny after our episode. Last week i realized that. I'm kind of in a rut with thirty talk. Like like have my go to's and they're fine. My relationship is going on and going on and going on and you get to the place of like i feel like a fucking set everything It's interesting because this we. I mean what this week kind of this week's conversation kind of a amok for me was like maybe if i could find space to like actually write things out and actually create fantasy and actually but because i'm kind of doing it from a switch. He plays of pleasing another person. It's always rooted in like rate. I always to me. I think i really need to to me is so there was something i did all own to this. There was something. I did a couple of months back. I think i put out on the podcast. I was like if anyone's audio porn for me. Ha ha ha. That would be really funny. Someone responding someone. Did someone actually responded. And they were like they're like hey i'm a fan. I found your podcast. I think is very sexy. And i'm like really and we had a skype conversation and then cova guy whereas george floyd habit everything the world and i just let it dry i was so i mean i've been so fucking depressed like the thought of recording erotica like audio erotica is like. Here's the world's very like i've really been having a rough rough time with that something that this conversation on lock was like okay. Maybe i need to present this differently and like actually think about storytelling. Because where. I've tried to do what you're doing where it's like. Oh i'm feeling this. I'm thinking about that. That's not everyone is neither do that. Various percent on. Everyone has the improv chops. So like maybe it's more about one of the things. Tabitha does a reading at the end of this and i really love the way that she performed. I mean you can just tell that. She's like pro and been doing this. Been to a lot of read that one before tune is still gives me chills. Yeah like i just think that maybe for me that that kind of structure and being willing to bet kind of time is something that could be more helpful in that situation. I'll send you the class that we did on. Diy audio rata because there is three of us and we all had different levels of structure that we went into it. I'm the most loosey-goosey sausage kind of in the middle. And then dan who's gonna roddick. Poet has way more structure. And what is this class. Where can people find it. Because if i fuck no no is Lola jean dot com backlash store So that's where i've been putting recordings of the classes that i've been doing and a good five or six of them are free or pay what you can right now to including that one could jesus. I didn't know that you're doing that. I have to like. I've been a little checked out. I haven't been announcing it that much. I've just been quietly doing it. Promote your shit i do like. It's always so much shit i mean. Do your email us. I get it. But i have a lot of a more expensive paycheck coming out to that stuff. I think announcing. I'm like it's free. Go by it. "I don't come. Download the APP and put in the code. Try to call feel bias. Walk into the tram to come crypto shy well. Wasn't yesterday, a bit of a wild one high. Gee, WHIZ! Absolutely nuts. Big foles in markets as I was pretty confident, we'd say we did say some very strong moves down and listen good training conditions as well. No huge amount of opportunities also fought around the same so the time if you will try to, the CRYPTO, cried Naci boost strategies, you would've been had the opportunity on Bonnets on ails on Tron and on Cod Donna, which moved the laced, and that's the one I took. But still, WANNA percent profit for the day. Yesterday pretty stoked about that. Yeah let me saw a beautiful boost to the just couldn't raise the ordering Thomas a volatile my sword the calculations. They'll just get it quick enough. Tron beautiful and yes gripe. Fifteen minute time from I love the fifteen minute timeframe on the top ten perc contracts. Why are you asked me well because you've got a big position? Entering you stop also pre taught. So when you've got your entry and you stop plus really tie, it means that will effectively you end up with a lot more contracts? Now that could have the you know you can be. A double edged sword. In the sense that you know not, there's not much liquidity they. You can't call some slippage that. but if it does if you do taunt properly then, yeah, you can absolutely kill the pigs. It doesn't take very much movement to make some very very lodge money on a multiple of risk. It's one percent. Oh, half percent whatever you like, so yesterday was released is You know that I did saw was going to go to those low timeframes. That was the plan. I put out there on my youtube, so if you not they guy follow it. It was with planet. Put out of everybody really stuck to that plan and it was successful. Now When the markets wrought fool your fifteen minute timeframe the law or even fifty nine out the half an hour one hour. Well, it's just by knowing what the market looks like what it's doing for me. It's when the comes back to the market. We had some serious momentum. Yesterday's lower timeframe souls comfortable to do it. The Quincy he was there for me to fill my bigger orders and I got what I needed. as a matter of knowing what to do and win a Seidel Tom. It's not just about having a trading strategy is a lot of things we need to do is try to make sure that we. Were the right place at the wrong time doing the right things, and that's what law I've tried fools about. That's what might try to coke communities about. It's about sharing this information with people to let them know what my plan is. H time for them to make their own planes It's really important to us that we help the community and we help people to become the best tried is I candidates the whole purpose of the business? Now couple of things the first thing I'll say to you right now. You're not. On my list I'm going to get a video out there today and we're gonna be doing some stuff with a Toro. Coming up, and you'll need an account for it so if you haven't got if your already got an HR archaic now dramas. It says you've already got one. If you haven't got one jump on the mailing list because I'm going to put the link in to get one because I'm going to take you through the crowd, of course, their guy and that's just the beginning is also going to be scans. There's also going to be a lot more. Down the track as we develop and get our licenses, that's right. We'll be looking at other markets eventually as well so That's where it's going to get really dame cool. In on looking forward to that day. Anyway let's go back to the markets and that's just try to call dot COM Gawain do the video newsletter. You can actually jump on rotten massages, and you'll save posted, so can fill your boots on that one. But. Just talking the market now mainly I. It is so difficult to the man. When, I look at it right now, yes, tonight, bearish definitely. The bergische broke down from that daily can looked like all buggy that we're GONNA. Go much much lower. We did move caught a lot lower me from from yesterday's close. To where we bat bottomed out, it was four point seven seven percent, which significant decent move. On I haven't quite quickly so. Know, we headed towards having one of those. You know I nine ten percent decline top dies, but did not even we. We bounced that. You know we bat SPEC, really hot and that's where for me it's. It's a little bit tricky. And the reason it's tricky is because once again. bitcoins just wrecked. itself is a trend. It's gone low. Hi Lola. Then, that's gone straight back up to a high. Low Aloha and if I look at the four outshot. The. We've been here before we will hear. With a hair! Back through April. Now, we get an up trend that would I down as soon as it set itself down. Investment opposite said itself. I wasn't till sort of You know the start of my. Sorry the back end of Ipil, the we started to really have a decent. That was when we sort of went through seventy eight hundred. We ended up around ten grandma. Cunanan suddenly around that sort of figure. At we're going continual choppy period of time. That is very. It's not the best training conditions, the matter of fact, trading, spot or trading margin against BTC's probably given a lot more opportunity than everything else. It's just a matter of being patient. Looking at one point five percent yesterday. I'm happy with that because I ain't got, add on a flat That was a really nice, really nice way to start the week to be feeling fresh to do anything else this week unless the conditions good now with bitcoin yesterday i. Believe it all. Dan, lightly percent at once I've actually closed up one percent on the nose. We had a low thousand, eight, hundred, ninety, and we close at nine, thousand, four, hundred, twenty, eight, so. We're told me five hundred dollar swing, but if you look at the the high of the Diet was ninety five sixteen, so a really wall What does it tell me? It doesn't tell me about the role really? You know there is a low hi, there is a low low, but is there a good daily downturn? Absolutely not it's certainly isn't clear. If it's not clear, it's not there and just go back and white Bitcoin Bitcoin in particular sitting. North thousand four hundred fifteen dollars right now theorem also kind rejected on the dingaling. Two hundred and seventeen dollars thirty two cents, which is exactly the resistance level interesting that one. It did close down only point three percent closing at two thirty one when now slightly down on the session, but not by very much I mean it's point two of a percent, the EXA pay look at how to a hell of smashed down as well, but it closed up one point one percent closing at nineteen point two cents a guy. He's a very strong run backup carney down nineteen point one, which is down point, six of a percent bitcoin cash close down yesterday as well the close to thirty spot seven zero. It had moved old why to a lawyer yesterday twenty four, so a pretty decent eleven move to get back up to closing down point item, percent base, they and also right now it's two thirty, five ninety five point one of the scent they. Look the book the daily downtrend they, it's broken, one seventy six it in a down trend. It looks very bearish to me on in fact, looking for opportunities to try this show at the moment I'm hopeful I. Haven't got anything yet, but I am keeping a close on on this as it does. definitely carry the hallmark of of Loa low coming in here finally, the four Alcan was a legal beat smaller than I certainly would have my My mock there. We currently only saw yesterday with death three point two percent closing at one, seventy, three, six down point to at one, seventy, two non full wrought now lot coin, rolling over as well rejecting those lows yesterday once again with a sitting around some support around one around forty one dollars and sixty four cents at BAFTA, quite strong, it's still pretty solid. Why slightly to the downside Slot Momentum Bearish Saad? A close yesterday Dan Point, six at forty three dollars, seventy five, or about the same rock now. A US against sitting random portal's forty turned was pulled the. Look a its its down point. Two of a percent now toodle fifty two yesterday. It closed down one point three six percents. It's not the clearest translate bonds at a river of a move yesterday. Jay's I really wish I had to take in that instead of Don on the fifth day at one stage. what was the actual low on the fool? Because the foreclose, sixteen fifty fog was down seven point five seven percent on the day. Pounced to close down one percent at sixteen dollars and thirty seven cents, the low was fifteen thirty so over a Duller of a move that very very volatile bonnets was yesterday and look tell you what It's a sort of sort of mock love to try. "On this episode. We're talking about late bloomers. And what it's like when most of your friends have gotten their periods and you still haven't so I was more of an early boomer. I was ten when I got my first period. I remember sitting with my mom and my aunt. Juniors it's a diner in Brooklyn New York. They're famous for their cheesecake. So we're eating dinner and I remember feeling clammy. It was super uncomfortable and I knew it must have been my period starting and I just didn't want to deal with that. I mean I was ten. I was a kid. It just seemed like such a heavy thing to have to deal with thinking back on it now. It seems Kinda crazy to be injuring into womanhood as people like to say but I was still figuring out sixth grade Algebra and my own early experience has me wondering what's the opposite like so our producer Mia Warrant and is sat down with a real life late bloomer to find out I were going up and I thought thirteen was the time that every single person got their periods so even people got up before it was like that so this is Lola her pronounce or she and her. She's a junior in high school and she lives in New York City last year. Lola was fifteen. She still hadn't gotten a first period but all of her friends had already gotten. There's so I was definitely nervous. what if? I just don't ever get it and I think I just was nervous. Maybe there was something wrong with my body and I would lola skinny. And she's small for her age. She wondered if that had something to do with it and the waiting it was driving her crazy. I think I've definitely was like what am I gonNA get at one? Am I going to get it? I want it and then I started really worrying because I was like well. My sister got it earlier and my mom got it earlier like why am I not getting it should happen? Did he talk about that with your mom years? Yeah definitely my mom I was like. I'm really nervous that I haven't gone and she was like seriously. Don't worry like it'll happen when it happens below. It didn't believe her mom. She was the worried something was wrong with her and she was feeling some serious foam. Oh she noticed a kinship among her friends who had already started their periods. They enjoyed talking about. It just seemed like such a community to me like everyone kind of has this thing in common and they share this one thing and like they have these conversations about like cramps and like tampons. And but like I didn't really get that because I wasn't in on it. You know during a conversation. People talking about their cramps Yeah totally and like why did I say that? I don't have my period like I don't know those cramps. They just so badly wanted to be a part of that conversation and it did feel isolating for me like not having it and stuff. Lola says her friends probably knew she was lying but they didn't call her out and then finally my parents were away and one of my really good family friends was with me. I went to the bathroom. It was just like a little bit of blood and I was like it's happening. I was feeling honestly like relief because I was like such a late bloomer to everybody so I was just really excited to get it. Lola's family friend brought her flowers and red cake. Some of her friends came over. They celebrated but watching the tonys after all that waiting. It finally happened. But MIA and I started to wonder. Was Lola right to be worried about being late? Bloomer. Is there a normal age forgetting first period? So is here. She's a pronounced she and her. She's a journalist and she's good at digging into things in finding our answers to difficult questions so she does some research to find out more. So in the United States the average age to get your first period is twelve and for anybody. That's there period later. There's a medical term for that call. Constitutional delayed puberty. That sounds really intense. What does that actually mean? Well it's basically a fancy name for someone who starts developing later than the national average age which is twelve. Yeah so it's Kinda like the official medical term for late bloomer. And you know it's often inherited from your parents so your mom got her period at eighteen or if your dad was a late bloomer. It's more likely for you to be one. That wasn't the case for Lola Though. And it wasn't the case for me my sister either we'll right and that's because it's just about genetics. There's actually a lot of different things that can affect. When you begin to go through. Puberty Diet is one thing. Kids are eating different foods and they did fifty years ago and this can affect when you start to develop. Scientists are also looking exposure to chemicals. These can affect wind. Puberty begins. Okay cool but here's the thing. Puberty isn't a single event. Like getting your first period on average it lasts about four and a half years. So biologically can mean a lot of different things for you can mean. Developing breasts are growing pubic hair. All that fun stuff. Yeah so you know. All of this assay. The term constitutional delayed puberty might sound kind of technical. But it's not something to worry about. The truth is that people develop in different ways and at different rates and starting period is just one part of the whole process right and you know to be clear. There are other reasons. You Might Start Your period later than twelve like if you're a serious athlete. And you're burning a lot of body fat like dancers or gymnasts. I remember when I was a dancer in high school. I skipped my periods. Sometimes for a month or two right decrease body fat can delay puberty or make you skip periods. But what should someone do? If they're really concerned about it. I said just talk to your parents or caring. Adult in most cases is just a matter of understanding that everyone has a little bit differently in other words. There's nothing wrong with being late bloomer. Right when Lola finally got her period at fifteen she realized she was a late bloomer and she was fine with that but when we talked she realized something else. That didn't really sit so well with her. I just think it's so strange like this welcoming to womanhood thing it is. It is weird like since when I'm not a woman I like. I'm just not like I'm still a teenager and I'm so fine being a teenager right now. I don't really need to be a woman that welcoming into womanhood thing. That's really typical to hear my mom. My Aunt said the same thing when I got my first period. But let's unpack that so on a biological level getting your period means you're physically able to conceive but just because your body's closer to adulthood it doesn't mean that you are and the truth is a first period can cause kinds of emotions to bubble up. Lola didn't like the way people were telling her she was suddenly a woman and I feel like can be true for anyone going through puberty. First period doesn't always mark the transition from girlhood to womanhood. That's because not everyone who has a period is a woman we're GONNA get into that more and another episode. another another former former democratic democratic presidential presidential candidate candidate is is endorsing endorsing Joe Joe Biden Biden in a video on Twitter California senator Kamilla Harris threw her support behind the former vice president saying quote I believe in joke we need a leader who really does care about the people and who can therefore unify the people and I believe Joe can do that and with us right now was ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts Steve what a difference a week makes it did you anticipate Joe Biden picking up this mode the momentum this quickly no I have not I don't think anybody did I I think what we're what we're seeing though is a fascinating phenomena based on one word and that word is fear it's fear of Donald Trump and fear of Bernie Sanders Joe Biden has not been reborn as some useful charismatics move talking energetic candidates Joe Biden today is still the same Joe Biden that people have a lot of doubts about two weeks ago two months ago two years ago the difference is that Democrats have so desperate so frantic to find somebody who can beat Donald Trump that they decided that day either as a group and individually as voters and as candidates they'll camel Harris being an example of of having to rally around somebody and then choosing between Biden and Sanders the fear of Bernie Sanders is pulling the party too far to the left so there's a lot of energy around the Biden candidacy right now but in my view it's largely negative energy it's driven by fear it's driven by desperation there are not a lot of Democrats even this morning jumping up and down in Saint Joe Biden's gonna be a great candidate a great president but this negative energy is very powerful and that's what's driving this trend do you think it's now his to lose or is it too early to say that definitely has to lose end up and I think it's gonna be very difficult for Bernie Sanders to rebound here the one variable of course the one no wild card is by himself as I say he has not been report he's still the guy who can show astounding lapses of judgment he's still the guy who could make gaffes he's still the guy who can show his age very clearly he's still the guy who can appear fumbling and uncertain and in debates with Bernie Sanders and interviews it's still entirely possible for him to make damaging mistakes I think a lot of Democrats even if they rally around by they're holding their breath and hoping that Biden will get its act together and I've seen some signs a few signs of Byton improving on the stop I think he's shown a little bit more energy I think the campaign line about I'm the candidate of those who have been left behind it counted out is a defective and powerful line really echoes of a bill to written of nineteen ninety two the comeback kid although Biden's hardly a kid he's more the comeback teaser than the comeback kid and also this line of of of appealing to the concepts of dignity and civility and normalcy I think they provide a fairly stark contrast to the president who's in the oval office now but Biden is still Biden it was all of his flaws but at this point he's the Democrats best hope and it's gonna be very difficult for Sanders to capture Steve thanks for your thoughts again this morning ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts it's also worth noting that this morning one of the former "Welcome to the show. Thank you thank you very much for having me here. It's great to have someone with so much experience and so much focus in motorsports fascinating topic and one that we haven't really had an opportunity to delve into thus far so it's great to have you as our guest to talk about what it really takes to win in Motorsport Competition. Yeah I've been a cop US and since I was. I don't know crawling around the floor home in England and that's where it always starts. I'm in the history of motor racing back in the UK. Goes back almost as long as it does in Italy and been super passionate about it. I remember being in the back of my parents car which was unfortunately not very exciting and just looking at the cars going by and being able to identify them at a very early age and you know I was very fortunate a just down the street. Maybe three houses down. He ran a garage and he used to have the local exotic car come by and he was a Jag. You A guy in. His personal transport was a series one e type an no driving around in mgb. Gt but that part of Essex where I grew up was just the capital of sort of the go. Fast Industry Motorsport we had Ford of boreham world. Rally House came out of we have people developing lots of other rally causing a gyco Terry Hoyle. Who's one of the biggest Ferrari restoration guys? He was just down the street and Early Memories of walking out on my driveway and seeing a Ferrari Daytona spyder sat there because he put up at the wrong house boy. That radium. Prince early does it. That's a that's a heck of a leader grow up yours. Yeah so for me. It's just been a passion and it was natural as I grew older and got pushed through the school system that when I started thinking about what he's a career to be. I wanted to be a race engineer from very early on and and really targeted where my education was taking me and I've been fortunate to be able to accomplish that and more so I've been very privileged. Well it's interesting that you had identified very early on what you wanted to be when you grow up as they say what about university I guess she went to university in the UK. There was only one place really to go in the UK to study car design. There was no specific courses. Like they're out today as a place called Love Brought University of Technology at the time and they had a course automotive tech college in the UK. It's like the equivalent here would be. Mit similar like that and they had a course automotive engineering and design twenty two spots and typically three four hundred applicants for those twenty two spots and I managed to snack one of those were. Ah Suspect took some talent I have to say. I'm not that rocket scientists the most brains guy at school. That's not me but I'm practical. A hardworking person and Israeli sort of dedication and sheer effort. That got me through the university system and I. I remember at the time because I I didn't go a conventional route. I didn't do the typical. Uk Root of which time was o level exams up until sixteen and then a level exams are ordinary and advanced level and chose sixteen to leave school and go to an engineering college. So I learned a bit of practical engineering. Learn how to work my way around a machine shop and I learn more about the hands on approach of engineering and I remember going to the interview. They win the head of the course. Lovebirds said you know. I don't think you're GONNA make unprepared to off your place but I don't think you're gonNA make it. I don't think academically you're strong enough kidding. And I remember seeing him three years later because he was actually four years later because he was my noise and vibration lecture. So I mean you look to me so that you still haven't said Yep so hey you know so much for his noise and vibration to obviously didn't have much resonance did it and good puns in there as well. I got three the my undergraduate degree. Well and the time I was trying to find a spot in major racing and it's not straightforward to come out of university. I mean you think it's not actually you know nothing. I wanted to be in Formula One because pure and motoracing and and you want to go work in the industry what you want to set your sights very high one for me was where I wanted to be. I wasn't able to find what I wanted in. An opportunity came up to actually further my education and two master's degree and so that's what I did. I moved over to the Cranfield Institute of Technology which is purely a postgraduate university. I spent a year. They're studying really similar but more advanced automotive engineering but I had an opportunity to work with a race car. Constructor called Lola cars no longer in business. These days time they were really starting to get into trying to project. How fast racing car will be before actually hit the track answer? My master's thesis was based on creating a mathematical model of racing cal and driving around the track and predicting the lap time was going to be. So that was complex math Tony when computing was not necessarily as advanced as I was writing the code in Fortran seventy seven. She's a language for probably nine hundred hundred of Sanskrit of But it was based around Lowest Formula. Three thousand car that was racing in Japan and Zucca circuit and Mizzou's circa in Japan is one of the most challenging not just from a driver's perspective but also from an engineer's perspective. And I challenge I had to do is to try and define the racing line or what line is the cog taken. A good driver will naturally find that but asking a computer is not straightforward. But that been some interesting work done by some guys at NASA which was looking at rocket trajectories so I started applying some of the algorithms. They were using on how to shoot a missile from point. Eight point being depending on what characteristics? You wanted that mistletoe. Shortest distance falsely speed. Whatever you could tune the algorithm so I played around with that and ultimately wrote a program which was very successful in predicting how fast the car would go low to use that quite a bit and even when my contact at lower ultimately decided to go a different direction. He took some of that knowledge with him. I remember getting a phone call. Saying Hey. I'm heading out to Miami to do the Miami Street race if I send you a track map. Can you for Jewish? And this was really before email and all the rest of it. I remember working through the night for several nights putting it on a three and a half inch floppy drill off here and Fedex ing him at the hotel and this was before they ran and then I got within three or four tenths of a second of the qualifying time. That is phenomenal. Let time programs today are fairly common. We use them all the time and you can write one in xl but back then none of these things existed even trying to create just the visual image of what the lap time would look like the speed tries against distance all time. It was a big challenges right in the actual program itself so for me just watching the way motors has embraced computing and the science behind. It has been a fascinating experience.

Coronavirus death toll rises to over 200

"Now the number of people killed killed by by the the coronavirus coronavirus stands stands today today at at more more than than two two hundred hundred in in the the bay bay province province in in China China where where the the outbreak outbreak stops stops it it every every day day at at daily update by Chinese officials shows a rising fatalities and the virus has spread to nineteen countries beyond China with cases in Italy and in Germany reported in the last twenty four hours the US also reported its first case of a person catching the virus from another person on American soil the World Health organizer to cat it's a global emergency but what do we know exactly about how dangerous this virus is that question for doctor James Lola from the division of infectious diseases at the university of Nebraska Medical Center I don't think people should be panicking at this point I think people should be concerned and I think the World Health Organization is is appropriate to raise this to the level of a public health emergency of international concern or if the EC and hopefully that will prompt additional awareness and actions on the parts of governments certainly the government China has been doing a tremendous amount in their efforts to mitigate the outbreak and you know I think right now we're we're trying to learn more about the disease and what the characteristics of its spread may be and then figure out what the best actions are to contain and mitigate the effects of the outbreak and the fact that the World Health Organization has declared a global health emergency it just points to the gravity of this how infectious how deadly is the corona virus it appears to be relatively infectious in terms of respiratory viruses it appears to be as transmissible from person to person as influenza and so that is certainly a concern it's not as fatal as some other respiratory viruses that its cousins sars and murmurs however it it is so far from what we can tell associated with a much higher fidelity rate than normal seasonal influenza and so it's that combination of more fatal than seasonal influenza but as infectious so we would expect a large number of cases in a population that means not only the the overall death toll much we're seeing in China I could be large but also the the burden on the healthcare system becomes a critical issue because in many areas of the world health care systems are strained on a day to day basis indeed as though and that's what the concern that's where the concern lies the consent is that it could spread to countries with weak health systems correct absolutely and in situations like that people listening to us in those parts of the world they would be panicking so it's not an unjustified emotion to walked they will be hearing on the radio of course and and again I think it's appropriate to be concerned and I think that hopefully this will be a call to action for for governments around the world to step up to their public health measures to increase surveillance and early detection so that they can take actions but again I don't think it's necessarily a a time to panic more time for concerted efforts and increased resolve what can we expect in terms of tools to combat the corona virus in terms of vaccines exception so I think it's going to be several months before we have a viable vaccine or therapeutic candidates if maybe longer than that I do think it's important to recognize that we know that the intensive supportive care for patients with these diseases can make a huge impact in outcome and so one of the priorities is to make sure that health systems aren't overwhelmed not to the point where they can't provide that type of effective supportive care and that means community interventions that may slow the spread of the outbreak in communities may become very important because if you can just reduce that peak load of ill patients in the community and load of patients who require hospitalization and medical care you can significantly improve your ability to deliver effective care to those patients so this community interventions may be the most important tool that we have this this outbreak continues to spread

"lola" Discussed on Marketing Over Coffee

"To marketing over coffee. I'm John Wall today. We have Mike Volpi with us. He has been friend of the show for it. Maybe even a decade now which is kind of scary for me to say but that is the fact an early sponsor of the show was with us long ago and currently CEO CEO at Lola Dot Com. We're going to talk about what he's doing there. I will have links to past interviews. We've talked to him on stack and flow when he was at cyber reason and even a back up spot back back in the day so we can give you to that if you want to dig into that but Mike thanks for joining us today. Thanks for having me. This is going to be a blast of looking forward to. I don't know my four or five. I time guests jacket is coffee mug. We'll send you know yeah. That'll be my second marking over Coffee Mug. I think there was some award you're fantastic awards orange used to do. I think I was the privilege recipient of one of those. Maybe six or eight years ago yet. Actually I have to go look look back the rock here of the Multi Award winner on the show again and and we limit Safai faces on it like we didn't even below goes. It was definitely very classy award as you do so yeah yeah. I am so far behind with that. We need to take and get the next round of those people ask for it and UNICEF and we joke about selling them to just to buy your award to get it so we need to get that moving again but all right so for folks that have already been in the last time we talked to you are at Cyber Zypries in Sam over there and now you're CEO at Lola so bring us through that what happened in how'd you get to where you are now so Lola was was founded by Paul English who was co founder of Kayak Grade. You know it's like it's four startup a startup in product engineering focus guy he was CTO Kayak and Lola had started consumer travel but quickly realized that their best customers were business travellers ends they pivoted to be to be to corporate travel by form arm so think about sort of a a next generation of car something like that and when they did that all sorta realized that he needed some help on the BBC side somebody who had done sort of sales marketing related things and I known him for a number of years and he reached out just to sort of have breakfast and chat and it's returned to this conversation conversation of wow we've known each other for years may be great to work together and I got really excited about the market opportunity. There's one point three trillion dollars spent Tom. Business travel every year and only about thirty percents about a third of that goes through corporate travel agencies or purchasing systems so the majority Ardi of people traveling for business and their company's paying reimbursing them but they're buying the travel using a consumer site like expedia and it just seemed like there there was a really big opportunity there for the mid sized companies for the mid market and to give them a solution that works for the company works for the traveler and I got really excited about working with all on the market and the team and I'm just just a year in now so it's been a lot of fun yeah and this is just a great time to check in with you because for the past four or five years we've kind of gone back and forth and always talked about the fact that the modern CMO is probably your best option for CEO. I mean the marketing department is the only one that touches every other department in has to work with every other department and with so much going on customer experience and of of course the Jenin sales as part of the is the right path to CEO. If that's what you WanNa do if that's where you WanNa go and you of course were right on that and had made that case and and now that you're a year in tell us. How is it all going and I guess the biggest thing any surprises from from making that jump. I mean it's all going great. Companies is growing at time. We've been growing customer base twenty percent month on month. We got hundreds of customers now. In a year ago we had essentially zero and so oh you're doing great but it's been I mean obviously a lot of challenges. I feel like the biggest probably surprise or challenge has been the amount of context context shifting you have to do so if your cmo you're maybe shifting between some product marketing messaging and demand generation campaign. You know maybe something in the US. Maybe something international but the amount of context shifting that you're doing is confined mostly to the world of marketing maybe how marketing interfaces to smother departments. I mean as a CEO. It's like everything is your purview and what you find is that many decisions end up in your lap. If people either don't WanNa make them don't necessarily know who should make the decision maker last resort and so you just get pelted with things of you know from a we want to spend more or less on marketing or hey we want to hire ahead of headcount plan or there's some Harry. Hr Jar issue or something for the new office or what kind of you know should we be recall grew in the office through the furniture selection. I mean just everything thing and not all those things are things that should require. CEO Attention but they offer but those are all things that have ended up my lap in some way or the other so just that sort of context shifting of being able to put yourself into the mindset of a CMO on point to had a product at another point to thinking about you know fundraising in capital structure at another time finance operations legal you just you bounce around a lot and one of things trying to figure out how to get better at us how to do you better context shifting because when that person walks into a room with you there a hundred percent up to speed on their thing and you may be coming from something totally different you gotTa kind of mentally like wind that down in that wind lined up on the news thing and it takes a little bit of doing yeah changing gears. I can see that being the whole entire day back now as CEO that was formerly formerly CMO. Is this a nightmare for your CMO or your VP of marketing or whatever because you know that job or is it. Kinda got twice as much horsepower with how does that work. you know you can you can have her on the show sometime and ask her so unfortunately. I hired Jeanne Hopkins to be our CMO in she she works for me at a hub spot as EP demand Gen back in the day and so she has some flavor what it's like to work for me. Obviously the rules are different now but she has some flavor of what that's like. I think mostly she sees it as an opportunity to get a second opinion second set of eyes on a lot of things I also do my best to kind of stay out of their way and make sure I'm pushing myself equally to all parts of the business but I'm sure there's a timer to where I kind of you know something in the marketing team slack channel and say hey what's going on over here. I think maybe we should try it this way but I have learned that the those words come differently or received differently by people what is coming from the CEO versus someone of the marketing eighteen year and so you gotta be you. GotTa be a little careful about that. I think that's the other thing is you. You're just one person and I try to be really humble and I know I don't have all the answers that I'm not not really an expert a bunch of anything and you know but I have opinions about stuff but you'd be surprised that because it's coming from the CEO not everyone but some people sort of see. It is like oh well. This is what we definitely have to do something last night where I was just inquiring about a specific tracking pixel it was on our site and it was like to slack messages later under people saying Oh we're we're gonNA take it off the site now and I was. I was like I'm just asking. What did they tell you. It's a bad thing like you're Doda react. I just had a question so you're gonNA be sometimes be a a little careful about the weight assigned. You're it's sometimes so I again. I try to stay out of the day to day of marketing as much as I can but I probably weigh in more than a few other folks right well yeah. There's there's a couple things that but the first one is that I remember that you brought on gene and so that's we have past interviews with her with we can throw in the show notes and yes. She you know when you talk about somebody who has already served up thirty thousand leads a month. She knows exactly what she's doing can execute so yeah. That's great that he's not I mean she's a multi. CMO and she's definitely got up before. She's absolutely a been there done that. We've had a chance to work together for so she was a great personality but then it's interesting I think so now you hit another great point of the divide between the people who are just kind of doing the job and part of that is usually they take the CEO's word it as law versus the more entrepreneurial people and then at the far end you know the the full on entrepreneurs who will even challenge a CEO because they know in the long run like that's sweat what needs to be done. However you guys managing that right now. Like where do you feel you are on that between all a bunch of raving maniacs versus versus you know fully established bureaucratic company can aware on the spectrum. Are you guys right now. we're in the middle it which I think is a good place to be and and I think that we have a good sense of entrepreneurship but were one hundred people now so you need everybody moving in the same direction. I think what we really try to do. Is I try to be really opened with team. We share we just had company meeting this morning and we should all the metrics from customer growth sales. Els Revenue Bookings the amount of travel. It's being or just through us. by different channels cash flow cash on hand all those things hiring head count and we sure all the data with the entire team and then. I try to frame that a context of like how how will those numbers indicate we're doing in terms of strategy she and what are big business priorities need to be and I think with that kind of information you can let people make better decisions are better entrepreneurs because when people are taking addition him being entrepreneurial but they're rowing in the same direction that you're trying to go as a team. It's really helpful if they're being entrepreneurial but the rowing in different direction it's not helpful so I think as long as you have a team that's well informed your open and transparent with them about the data the priorities the business then you can really let them take the reins so to speak in kind have drive some entrepreneurial activity within their area. I think you run into problems when people aren't well informed in well aligned and then they're trying to do their own thing so we try to be really open and transparent. We do a lot of communication. you know every single time the deal closes that gets hosted internally every time customer churns. There's always a couple that gets hosted internally. New Products stuff brought.

"So sometimes we get questions about why we offer different types of the same product. Okay. Let me explain. So when it comes to feminine care, for example, we have talked about menstrual, discs menstrual cups organic tampons and people like with. So what are you? What are you promote then? Well, we promote feminine care that is safe to use for all women, and by giving you the options you can find one that works for you. Because no two bodies are the same. No two people are the same. So we wanna make sure it is our responsibility to that these products and then give you options. So today, I want to talk about Lola Lola is our tried and true a tampon choice. It is female founded they care so much about their products. They are one hundred percent natural. No BS. Nope. Mystery fibers nothing like that. They have panty liners tampons. They actually do have the feminine wipes as well, which I love if you don't use. He should what's really interesting though. And Lola taught me this FDA the FDA doesn't require brands to disclose a comprehensive list of ingredients in their feminine care products. So most of them don't. Lola. They're transparent. They're like, but look at it. They're all natural. They're good for you. Don't worry, which is awesome. I trust them so much. You have to be careful. Some tampons have bleach in them. And then you put it in your vagina. That is not good. Okay. So.

What are your hopes and James for your sister? Lola. Oh, because you only two years behind you? Yeah. What do you think? Do you think about? She's she's also an emotional person, but she'd never had the the dark cloud that my wreck in that, no, she has it, but very different. It's manageable. So what are your hopes her. I don't. I don't. I don't know. I don't wanna say like anything that looks very walk. Your very good. I swear. Yes and very protective is she is she gullible. Not kinda more than more than I am, I think. So it seems like you know you are. Yeah. She's, she seems like a more. More trusting? Yes, she's like a regular girl. Is that overreaching more than I am? She's yeah, she should regular goal with a quirk. I'm a quirky girl with some regular. That's like. That's like. I think that sent. Normative kind of fit the mold. I have no idea what that means. She is regularly if you you kids in these terminologies too, right? Yeah. But she really that, you know, boyfriend loves her, Instagram, post pictures. You like me. Can I get this also? "But she loves him clearly and he loves her clearly and in fact a lot of the dissatisfaction and conflict he has with his own mother is because she mistreats lola and because frankly he loves lola more than he loves his mother they're stuff there now this is a minefield because we have seen this movie before we have seen the kind of movie where someone finally realizes that they have been taking advantage of and oppressing another person whom they love and so they set them free bus becoming the hero of the story when rookie they're not they're just kind of correcting something it's horribly wrong and were meant to experience they're kind of enlightenment as a positive but ultimately for the slave there is really no happy ending so we've seen that it's a challenge to avoid that narrative here because there is no great change for lola there is really only the sadness of an unfulfilled broken life yet one of the real challenges here and a diversion a story lola is nothing but an object she's a sunday who's i looked at but never serve explored internally and a dot is the the real dangers that you're not getting inside what her drives are because they're they're actually complicated in his own does seeing lots of moments where she kinda can't leave she would want to leave she loves the kids of shells wants to go back she realizes she has no ability to function here and she scared what's gonna happen if she rock the boat at all i wonder if the fundamental relationship is essentially love triangle it's love trial between alex his mom and lola answered that the very complicated thing between three of them because as loves his mom and it'll is lola but it's very hard to.
