"Finding a way to navigate through this season, you know, make 28 starts coming off a year where you pitched double what you've ever pitched in a professional season before. I think will be big. You know, if he makes 28 starts, that's a really good player. Like with George, I just think it's, hey, you know, be out there for it all. And can you make 28 starts, and can you do those things? And this is a guy that learned how to throw a two seam fastball. Middle of the year and saw Robbie ray do it and say, hey, let me try that. And picked it up and within three weeks was throwing at 97 miles an hour at the front hit up of a left handed hitter and having it dive back onto the plate. And just leaving guys shaking their head like, well, what the hell is this all about? So, I mean, I think that's, you know, a guy that's like, where do you go? You just kind of refine it. You just get a little bit better. Avoid one of the, you know, you're always going to have bad outings, but find ways to maybe work your way out of trouble at times. Say, they don't have all your best stuff or whatever. Can you find your way to get out of it and give the team a productive start? And they're going to still watch his innings and his workload. You know, if he goes out and throws a hundred pitches, one star, the 90 7, you know, the next one might only be 80 or 85, because they want him to monitor that. But I think for him, it's healthy, you know, having a way to combat lefties with that two seamer. I don't know that he'll ever have a great change up, but then again, you never know. Maybe it was just like Robbie ray and Logan Gilbert each fooling around with split finger fastballs, maybe George, Kirby picks up a baseball one day and says, well, I think I'll try a split finger and comes out and it's going to be a plus pitch because like Robbie ray was saying today, that kid is that talented. He can manipulate a baseball so naturally compared to the other guys, like they have to work at it. He just grips it, finds a way he says, what do I want this to do? And then throws it and it does it. I wanted to ask about Gilbert because he obviously had a great season last year. It took a step forward from his rookie campaign. What is the next move for him? What can he do to improve on a three two ERA and a three four 6 5th? Yeah, I mean, I guess Logan does give up some hard contact, you know? He will give up the bomb. I think that's the big thing is maybe just kind of being able to some of the hard contact numbers. His off speed stuff is improving, you know, the extension he gets on his fastball. Otherwise it's kind of straight at times, but I think that's just the big thing is finding ways to limit hard contact is this new split finger that he's toying with and I saw a video of it and looked like a wiffle ball. Does that help do that? Especially against lefties. Lefties lefties find ways, like if they can find ways to stay off the slider or the breaking ball early in counts and just kind of load up on that fastball and cheat it a little bit. They hit them and they hit them hard. Does the split finger off set that? I mean, I think that's the biggest step for him is limiting the hard contact and being able to do that. Because he's a really good pitcher in the moment. You saw what he did late in the season, you know, the game where they clinched against the a's, he was outstanding now. That wasn't the toughest lineup in the world, but he's really good. And I think he's, he's the type of person that will analyze data analyze results, all this kind of stuff. And get better every time out. Now, if you talk to his best friend Cal Raleigh, who's his harshest critic, Cal would be like, oh, he's never good ever, you know, but Cal, that's kind of the whole roommates thing as well. But I think I've been like, we're sitting there talking about what Logan and George could be and they're coming off years that are really good. For me, this group for success is just about being on the field. If they're on the field and they're on the mountain pitching, consistently, and not battling any kind of lingering arm issues or anything like that, then they're a pretty good group altogether. The weakest projected position for the Mariners is left field. And I guess also DH some of the same guys on the depth charts at each of those positions. But it comes back to the Jared Kellen question, right? So what is the outlook for Cal Nick as if that is ever an easy question to answer? And how do you expect the playing time to pan out with Cal Nick and Pollock and other players in that mix? As far as I know, I mean, it's going to be a strait of a platoon as possible and left field. You know, with Pollock starting the games in left when there is a lefty on the mound, you know, and Jared will be out there in the right hand of days and, you know, I would think you'll see Jared as a defensive replacement late in games. And I think if you can do that, if you can just limit Jared to face and righties for right now, and I don't think he has a bad approach or a bad swing against lefties. It's just like a lot of the left he was facing for a while, or just really, really good. What does to it did to him late in the season was kind of borderline cruelty. But yeah, I think we're talking about this today and we were having lunch. And I expect him to be a competent big league player, now is he going to match the hype that he was before? No, I don't see that. You know, even as bad as he was and how often he swung and miss, if you look at the collected of two seasons two abbreviated seasons, I think it's about 500 plate appearances that are still 21 homers and I think 20 doubles. And think about that. He was not put in a situation to succeed at times. He was really, you know, that he faced a lot of lefties early. They played him when he was struggling anybody else in 21. And so I think, you know, if the Mariners do a better job of controlling the scenarios where he's playing, I think he'll find some moderate to decent success and then can build on that. I think the talent is there. You look at everything that he does, he is God all the tools, but it's just the ability to kind of relax himself and play. And understanding the moment, not trying to hit a Grand Slam, when there's nobody on base. You know, how do you handle all that stuff? And then the failure that comes with it, it was like

"Talk about the teams that aren't going. What are you doing Meg and none of those teams are in the stupid playoffs so talking about the ones that are I'm going to ask you a question so that I start stop rambling. What matchup in the wild card round are you most excited not specific like pitchers against one another that you could talk about that too I guess. But which team, which series are you the most excited to sit down and really, you know like squish the couch down and be like, I'm watching this. I think it probably is Mariners Blue Jays. Oh no, Ben, it's gonna be. The only downside is that I would prefer for both of those teams to play a little longer and that is not a possibility, but they are skilled in very different ways. I guess you could say and so it's kind of a fun matchup in that sense and that yeah, the Blue Jays lineup will just grind you down. It's pretty good from top to bottom. Yes. Even though Vlad has not quite been the Vlad of last year and of late has not even been the Vlad of earlier this year, but there's still just a ton of firepower in that lineup and they're not a lot of holes, whereas with the Mariners, there are some holes. There are at least some spots that are not strengths, let's say. So there's that, but the Mariners I would be much more afraid of their bullpen than I would be of the Blue Jays in front of Romano. But also I would be somewhat afraid of manoa and gossman. Yeah. That's kind of a scary top two, whereas I guess I would be less intimidated by any two of the Mariners starters. I would feel better about any three of them, perhaps. Yeah. And certainly any four of them, but they can't play four in this particular series. And really, I guess you've got to start Robbie ray because he's Robbie ray and he is well known and he was here big addition and everything and he's, you know, he's been better than he has been fine. Fine. But that lineup is extremely righty heavy the Blue Jays lineup and that just seems like an ideal catch up. So I don't know that you could actually avoid this really just given all that goes into who gets starting assignments in the postseason, but I might have a somewhat quicker hook than one would normally for a picture of that stature and salary and so forth just because this particular matchup, it does not seem conducive to rapid race success. Right, so if it were me, it would not. He would just be like, I got a cough and I can't because I have a cough or like we could because you don't want to put him on the injured list because then he's not available for the division series that they might play. So, you know, but you want to you could have a migraine, you know? That's believable because I can't imagine a worse place to be than a playoff sporting event if you had a migraine. I would simply prefer to become a ghost, you know, personally. So they should be like, oh, he unfortunately has a migraine. And so what do we do except instead have Logan Gilbert start and then George Kirby? Right. You know, if you're with me, but I don't get to have a say because I don't have anything to do with it, you know? There's some podcasting, really. On the other hand, though, you might have some good matchups in the bullpen if you do have a fairly aggressive hook as I hope you should in this series. I mean, you have some pretty nasty guys who would be good fits for those slated right on rate match ups. I mean, you have your sea walls and your Diego Castillo's and your Eric Swanson's and your pen Murphy's and of course you're Andres munoz and these guys kind of scary, probably for Blue Jays fins and the late innings in a close game. There might be some vulnerability there. Not that I think the adjacent had a huge platoon split themselves as far as a recall like they're just a good lineup, just a bunch of good hitters. They can hit righties, but if you have some tough ratings coming in who themselves will have some platoon advantage. They're still, you know, it's not going to nullify their offensive advantage, but it might mitigate it somewhat. So that's sort of the saving grace. Yeah, yeah, I mean, it's just like a very fearsome lineup. Now, what I would maybe point out if I wanted to be fatalistic about stuff is that the Seattle bullpen has not been as effective lately, you know, as it had been for a while, it was like, wow, and now it's like, it's fine. But it's also like, it's just recent. I don't know what to do with my hands. While I'm talking about this, I don't know how to analyze the Mariners in the postseason. Having a breakdown. I just know that my logical brain knows that there are places in this series where Seattle matches up to their own benefit like really well. And there are places where it's less good, but the feelings part of my brain is like, they're going to get swept and then I'm going to be sad. So that's clouding the logical part. I wonder, if I'm the Mariners, I feel very nervous about really everyone in this lineup hitting. Well, that's not totally true. Like Julio's grade and ty France has his moments and Mitch has been like not completely, but we'll never. And then like eugenio Suarez has looked pretty okay since coming back from the injured list and like of course they have big dumper. So why am I doubting anything? But there are vulnerabilities to be exploited here because you're going to get like Adam Fraser and Jared Kellogg is going to have to take winker's outright. Right, winker is out probably for the rest of the postseason. Same haggerty, you know? I was just reminded that Tom Murphy was at one point on the spaceballs in which I looked really long time ago. So, you know, I don't know that I've said anything particularly insightful here other than I feel nervous and it's manifesting as like tingling behind my eyes, which I hope doesn't mean that I'm about to get a migraine. Well, we can move on to the next series because you're going to be suffering enough strain as it is this weekend. I imagine. It's going to be so miserable. Like I have had this thought at various points over the last couple of years when we have had like really tense games or like do you remember Ben that postseason where the Dodgers and the Red Sox played a game that lasted approximately two years? Yeah. It was like a 97 inning long game. I think that it almost killed rob Manfred. I think he would prefer to have been a ghost throughout some radicalized him that was his super villain origin story that led to the zombie runner. He became the joker. Anyway, so I remember thinking during that game, I've remembered thinking about this during tense moments throughout the last couple of years of postseason play like, wow, am I glad that this isn't a team I care about personally? Doing this. And now, I've let my dumb human feelings return, and I am about to be miserable. Do you know how you're gonna do it?

Northwest news radio's Brian Calvert lays out the arguments we've heard in the past, plus something new that one teacher wants you to consider. Recently, The Washington Post wrote about the number of school districts saying cell phone use is so distracting their banning students from even bringing the devices to school. Other districts say, leave it in your locker during class. But as we've experienced over and over in today's world, school can be a dangerous place, and parents argue kids should be able to keep phones on them to be in contact with them in the event of the unthinkable. Both sides have very valid points, and then there's the perspective of Sam Carey. I know that this is a controversial topic, and as a former middle school teacher, I'm well aware of all the challenges that come up when you allow students to use their phones. The reality is that those challenges come up even when we don't let students use those phones. On his YouTube channel called new Ed tech classroom, the former teacher champions 5 reasons to keep phones and kids hands while they're in school. The first reason accessibility. In the reality is that lots of students that might not have a laptop do in fact have a smartphone. The only research being done online suddenly the smartphone is essential argues carry. His second reason for keeping the phones with students, it can make lessons more interactive with split screen capability. The third reason, the camera on that phone, not only does that aid interactivity in the classroom, but he is four reason, virtual reality also comes to life with those phones. And then you and your students can do things like virtual museum visits. They can visit different places around the world that you might be studying. You may have noticed a common theme rather than focusing on unwanted behavior or terrorism in schools, Sam Carey is merely encouraging us to embrace what's already out there and use technology to help kids learn. Smartphones are a part of daily life, and I believe that educational institutions should reflect the world in which we live and prepare students for it. In other words, you can ban it all you want, but kids will still have a smartphone at school. So we might as well teach students about best practices for how to use them respectfully. We can teach them digital citizenship, pertaining to smartphone use, and teach them how to use it as a tool that can support them, as opposed to something that can tear people down, especially pertaining to social media issues. Brian Calvert, northwest news radio. Yeah, it's very controversial as you and Kim, you mentioned earlier that there are some tools, some benefits to the kids having the phones. Yeah, I found that with mine, especially in middle school, if you have them put their homework assignments or their tests on their calendar and then share that calendar with mom and dad, you can know when your kids should be studying and help support their education that way. All right, using it the right way. Northwest news time now 6 14. And time for northwest traffic

"How would you feel if this were your default experience while watching baseball games? And it shows a window with Shohei Ohtani hitting soap so far so good, but ohtani is like a window within the window and to the left of Otani. There's a big box that says Shohei Ohtani is 6 for 12 with two homers and 8 RBI versus Logan Gilbert and then there are three huge stats for both ohtani and Gilbert velocity and hard hit rate and such. And then below Otani, there's a big box that shows that ohtani is betting and he's done today and that other hitters are coming up next. And so the real estate that Otani takes up on the screen, I don't know, maybe like 60% generously and the rest is just taking up with numbers and information in it. It's almost like maybe what you would see on like a statcast broadcast of the Derby or something where there's just like a lot going on there. So this is nightmare fuel and it worries me that they're asking about this because I don't think they would actually do this like have a huge box that's like ohtani is batting and make trout is up next and all of these other stats and what ohtani has done against slope and Gilbert, but I wonder whether they're asking about this because they are trying to find out whether people would turn off the TV or stop streaming or whatever if that real estate were occupied by other ads or perhaps prop bets, real time odds, et cetera I wonder whether this is why they want to assess people's tolerance for having this much of the screen taken up by something other than the action. I'm going to go ahead and just steal a Meg line wholesale to the surprise of nobody listening to this podcast. I have some notes. Yeah. So NP B already chose all of this information and does it in a better way that doesn't demand 60% of the broadcast and that's because there are some npb broadcasts that have understood that there is enough space for more than one bug. You can have a score bug and then you can have a secondary bug. I can find the screenshot and I can send it to you, but there is one Japanese broadcast I was looking at where they have the score bug and the score bug is really pretty. And it has all of the necessary Staples. But then in the top left, so the score buck is in the bottom right in the top left, they show who's on deck and who's in the hall. With some stats about them. And it's fine. It does not detract from the viewing experience at all. I think because of the way that kanji works, they're able to get text kind of compressed in a way that's a little bit harder for us in terms of text ranges. That affords them a little bit more real estate than we have with the English alphabet and the way that names generally require space. But like the amount of space that now batting on deck and in the hole is taking up. And this matchup metric, which everyone understands the statistical noise. I do not want. I don't like this. I'm always like I get that they want to devote real estate. I think you're right Ben to probably adds or more likely gambling info. Like this strikes me as similar to the horrible ESPN broadcast that are based that I sometimes have to watch when the mainstream doesn't work for some reason. But I guess part of my confusion with this stuff is always that presumably the people who are going to be interested in that content, not the ad based content, but prop bets or advanced stats or what have you are also the people who strike me as more likely to be watching baseball on their TV and then having a second screen at their disposal. So I guess this is in some respects a question for you, which is like, how do you, how do you Chris think about sort of integrating that piece of the viewing experience to the graphics you actually have to display on the screen? There's actually been, I'm not trying to Dodge the question on this, but I am going to say that there has been a lot of technology that's been worked on in terms of overlay graphics that you can turn on and off, like Twitch has Twitch extensions. There's been a couple companies that have tried, they've basically their business model has been, we will build an interactive layer over your broadcast. In order for people to choose what information that they want to engage with and also to actually have interactive elements of the broadcast, where it's like playing a game similar to MLB rally or what Thursday Night Football is done on Twitch in the past couple of years where you could try and predict the plays and you earn points. For doing so, like a lot of this stuff that I'm seeing here is something that I think would be something if you could turn it on and off, it would be wholly unoffensive. That's fine. If I want to have that information up, if I want to choose that viewing experience, it's great. If you're going to make it the default hell no, like absolutely not. Like that detracts from the experience that's not what I want. If I am trying to watch this on a small screen and now you've taken away 60% of the screen with information I didn't care about. No, I'm not going to spend money on that. Absolutely not. So I think that if they are going to pursue the angle, which the MLB dot com website when you're trying to watch websites or when you're trying to watch streams on your desktop machine and they have the website where you can turn on and off all of the different stats below or to the right and you can turn on and off spoilers for all the games up above. That's pretty good. If you were to take this kind of thing and try and put that experience there or make it optional or make it configurable, absolutely. I celebrate that. I love it, give people more options, but please don't dictate to everyone that that's how they need to ingest this information. Do you think score bugs have gotten better or worse over time or

"Visiting the cubs. I'm like, I like the reds on the money line plus one O 5. I like Graham ashcraft to earn a win at plus one 79. I like Kyle Hendricks to allow more than three and a half runs at plus one 15. Here's a situation at Wrigley Field. Temperatures in the mid to upper 80s, maybe even touching the low 90s, wind blowing out to left center at 15 plus miles an hour. And the reason why I like the reds in this game is because their picture Graham ashcraft, this season has a ground ball rate of 58% and a walk rate of 4%. Those are very important important metrics to have when the wind is blowing out it greatly. You don't want to put guys on base for free. That's the low walk rate. And you want to keep the ball on the ground. And the wind's blowing out, thus the high ground ball rate. As a matter of fact, in the triple-A in the miners before he was called up earlier this season, his ground ball rate was 71%. So this guy is an ace at keeping the ball on the ground. He also is a pitcher that has the best money line or money line win rate in baseball this season. He's number one in base money line one are money one betting on this pitcher when he earned his team when this pitcher pitches. So ashcraft has been really, really good for betters this season. His peripherals are perfect for the environment here. Meanwhile, Kyle Hendricks is the pitcher for the Chicago Cubs and just not what he once was. His ground ball rate is under 40%. That's too low in this environment, his hard hit rate is almost 40%. That's too high. He doesn't miss bats, the strikeout rate is well under 20% at 17.2. He's allowing 1.55 homers per 9 to season with the wind blowing out. I wouldn't be shocked to see him give up at least one or two long balls. So I like the reds. I like ashcraft versus Hendrix. I'll be targeting bats and Cincinnati side. More so than Chicago side, not that Chicago can't. You know, go deep and exploit the win in this environment, but I really do think the kitchen advantage much greater for the Cincinnati reds and ashcraft has been the most profitable pitcher trying to pitch to bed on so far this season of any in Major League Baseball and he hasn't pitched up here at all season. So definitely like that spot with the reds. And then the other game, again, not two really good teams, but Seattle. And the Oakland a's. Logan Gilbert is by far one of the best pictures you probably don't know about for the Seattle Mariners, has an 8 and three record 2.44 ERA this season. They are big, heavy favorites, more than $2 against Oakland. I like Gilbert to get the win at plus one 33. Him to hold the a's while he's out on the bump to under four and a half hits at plus one ten. Liaison offense, it's literally the worst and Major League Baseball. They're dead last an average on base slugging and OPS. They're a extraordinarily punchless offense and Gilbert as with his 8 three record of 2.44 ERA has been really, really good this season. Also one of the most profitable pitchers to bet on so far this year. So I love attacking the a's offense. That's one of my favorite things to do is look and see who the a's and the tigers are playing. And then on those pictures, the a's especially just a horrendous offense. So dig into Logan Gilbert and the Seattle manners tonight with Gilbert hopefully getting a win for me at plus one 33 and holding that a's offense under four and a half hits while he's out there. So a couple of games that may not be great for TV ratings, but certainly I think some spots to exploit based on what we're seeing at Wrigley Field and in Seattle tonight. Anytime you put money on a game, it's worth watching, right? Because I always tell people, you know, you gamble, it's like going to a movie, right? It's for the price of admission. It improves your viewing experience. It's really what it's about. That is a great point. You make a wise point. And it's also the emotions that come with that are fun, the highs, and the lows, you had a low, a couple nights ago. I had a tremendous low last night. I don't know if you know saw my bed beat. We went over what happened with the D backs and the Padres for you. On Tuesday night, but last night, I had a best bet of the cards Marlins under 6 and a half alternate total at plus one 60. It was three two in the 9th inning, cardinals were up three two, Ryan helsley comes in to close it out for the Cardinals. He entered the game with a 0.30 ERA in 29.2 innings pitched. And with two outs, he gave up a two run Homer to abi Garcia. To make it a four three game. So not only did I lose my best bet, but then I watched my team some of Cardinals fan lose a game they probably should have won to the Miami Marlins and failed to a complete sweep. So it was a bad bad night after Avi Garcia hit that two run shot for me at the betting window. All right, real quick. Let's move to the John Deere classic. We gave our favorite plays for that yesterday on the pod. Right now, the first round is about midway, so there's still a lot of guys that need a tee off, but you wanted to make note of JT poston who was 8 under through 14 holes. And I'll go ahead and throw a guy out there who is from my neck of the Woods, wildwood Missouri, his name was Chris naag. He qualified for the United States open and fared well there, got into the John Deere field, Chris nagle, is 6 under through 9. So we have a couple of really, really nice scores out there posting a nagel and I know posting with someone that you were interested in before this tournament started. Is there any way to get invested in him now that we've seen that we get off to a good start round one? Yeah, so again, just make note we're recording this podcast at 1220 this afternoon. So and we'll probably be posted sometime around one 32 o'clock. So keep that in mind. Right now, post in top of the leaderboard right now at 800 with a two shot lead, data golf has him as a 16.2% chance of winning the tournament. So right now you can put money down 5 to one for him to win this tournament. Also some good odds at plus one 30 for him to finish in the top 5 and I just share that just because when you and I both liked him coming in and he's off to such a phenomenal start and we talked about it yesterday on wager as well as the podcast, there's not a lot of big names playing in this tournament. A, they're taking the week off, they're getting ready for the open. Also, a lot of them are over in Portland, playing on the live tour, the 54 tour. So keep that in mind. So I think there's some value there right now we're posting off to such a great start. All right, that'll do it for the Thursday edition of it anyway to podcast. We are back on ESPN2 tonight for daily wager at 6 eastern three Pacific..

Behind the Bets

"A lot of baseball on the card today. A lot of baseball. No Stanley Cup final action till tomorrow. No NBA Finals till Thursday. How do you feel? How do you feel about the big baseball card? You know, baseball, is it my favorite sport? No. To be quite Frank, but like you said, it's a dog day this summer, but it's one of those things where you wake up and you're really scrubbing looking for something to bet for sure because usually I feel like you're so amped up during the NFL season or you know come the NBA Finals NHL finals. So if this was the World Series, I think we'd be a little more amped up but you know get through it. Baseball gets a bad rap every time of year, people like me make these comments about how we don't have any good anything good that we have to turn the baseball. Baseball is here for us though. Baseball is here for us like what was that pizza place in beaver canyon that terrible pizza place at Penn State that would be open? I think it was canyon pizza, right? I think it's that, but I'm so bad. It's literally only there for maybe a year and a half of Penn State main, so but yes, I know what you're talking about. Everyone talked about how it was like sandpaper. Worst pizza ever, but it was the only place you could get food at two 30 after everything it closed. And it did the job. That is baseball. Let's get to the car today. We're going to start with you. The Yankees and the rays might be the featured game tonight. It's Garrett Cole versus Corey Kluber, yanks minus two 20 in this one. How are you going to play it? I'm actually looking at the run line for this. I mean, they're absolutely just so hot. 9 and one their last ten games, the money line is just two juice and obviously the raids are also dealing with injuries, most notably Brandon Lowe, Wanda Franco, and as for that pitching matchup, Kluber is just shaking on the road over the last 23 road innings. He has a 5.09 ERA, and that's just not going to cut it against the New York Yankees right now. Also, we know Cole's looking for a bounce back game on the mound. He has a 2.87 ERA at home, which does help him, and the rates aren't great against right hand pictures. So I think again, money lines to juice, I would take them on the run line minus one ten. All right, first one for me, let's head out west, Minnesota is at Seattle. Two bets in this one. I'll go in order of what I like the most. Twins first 5 innings, even money plus 100. Second bet twins for the game plus one O 5. Awesome pitching matchup here tonight. Incredibly underrated, it's gonna be Joe Ryan going from Minnesota against Logan Gilbert from Seattle. Both guys have been fantastic. Ryan's got a two two 8 ERA this season, but on the road, 1.61, the dude is fearless. Now Gilbert's been solid, but the difference in this game is that while you have two good pitchers, Ryan is facing a Seattle team that's league average essentially against right handed pitching. Minnesota, however, crushes right handed pitching. Fourth and OPS, third and weighted runs created fourth and waited on base average. Seattle one in four in their last 5 home games. I like the twins in the first 5 innings at even money. I like the twins for the game at plus one O 5 hour. Philadelphia police. Red hot will probably never lose again two, three World Series in a row. I'm predicting it now. They're laying one 45 against the Marlins tonight. What do you like here? Spoken like a true Philadelphia native. You know, I've watched hustle the last two days, so at this point, we might as well just watch it. We're going Philly's run line plus one 40, like you'd mentioned. I mean, they've won ten of the last 11 they're heating up. They're three one over the Marlins this season. And yes, the Marlins were also heating up. They were on a 5 of 6 game win streak before losing three two last night. But Trevor Rogers on the mound for them, 5.58 ERA three and 5 record, he continues to get worse throughout the season, two bed starts came against awful defenses. He allowed the nationals and rockies to score combined 7 runs in almost 9 innings. He saw 15 hits and 58 at bats, Evelyn's been much better for the Phillies, give me the affiliate on the run line plus one 40 tonight. I like that. I'm also going to play them in the first 5 innings as well on the run line, which is minus one 15. To your point on F Lynn, look at his home road splits on the road, his ERA is north of 7 at home, 1.16 opponents have an OPS of just four 61. Marlin's turning to Trevor Rogers tonight. They're one in three in his last four starts. He's been shaky in that stretch during that four game run and ERA of 7.64. Julie's got to stay on it, all right? They're winning games. They're looking good. Can't get sloppy. You can't get complacent. Classic Philly let down when you have these like little brief moments of greatness. Everyone gets excited and then everyone starts, you know, going around booking parades. And then they come out flat. So tonight, I'm not overly thrilled about the first 5. I was close to making it. My best bet..

"And I think what I love buster and we haven't seen it all connect yet. But they've such a fun time like playing the game and you get the young guys and Jared clinic Julio Rodriguez. They haven't quite hit their stride yet, but you just get this feeling like when they do and they're so dang talented, you know what's going to happen. It's just going to further add. And right now, I mean, Jesse winker is struggling. I mean, there's so many of their players that are offensively not who you know that they can be. I mean, Adam Frazier is leading that team right now is another new pickup. And a lot of their offensive stats. But this is a team that you are like, just watching them play the game. They enjoy it. They love it. And I'm saying this watching them in the back in the last season. When you see a lot of teams just like grinding, they never look that way. They look like every day. We're fun to be at the ballpark. We're going to win this game and I'm hoping this is a team that gets into the playoffs. And I think this is a year when the casual fans learned the name of Logan Gilbert. Yeah? Yes. Stuff wise as a pitcher. And he's led their entire staff, and this is a staff, you know, like I said, it's got a cyan winner and Robbie ray. They've got some big names and Marco Gonzales and pictures that we've seen have success in the past and yet it's Logan Gilbert there with a .058 year aim so stupid and we'll see those numbers get more realistic, but he's been lights out and you're kind of like, wait, who is this guy? Where did he come from, especially looking at the names on that staff? He's the one that's been shining. All right, before you go, we got a bleach street coming up asking about the early season success of Francisco Lindor, who obviously has been so important to the Met so far this year. What are you seeing in the mets? Yeah, well, and honestly, single and smile, right? I mean, just to meet anything exemplifies like the ten year old and all of us that's like just giddy to play. And similar, I think, to Eric Hosmer and bob Melvin, I think bookshelf showalter has done the same with Francisco Lindor. I think he has taken the big market of New York and kind of narrowed it back into like, hey, you were a player that I absolutely believe in. And I don't know the words the buck has shared, but you watch the relationship. You watch the shots of them in the dugout and him kind of like arm around and talking to him. He definitely sees and understands the psyche of Lindor. It seems like and is bringing out the best in him. And you watch the mets and of course the biggest news is Jacob de Grom, you know, not on the staff and yet now you see like their entire pitching staff and the like so many pictures and you mentioned Logan Gilbert with a Mariners and you're seeing pictures within the mets organization that aren't named Max Scherzer that aren't Chris Bassett and the big names that we were expecting to carry the staff. Of course it's early, but that to me is like what gets me excited is at some point Jacob Brown is going to come back later in the season and this pitching staff is already the best in the majors so far. All right, Jess, well have fun on the broadcast and yeah, I'm looking forward to it. Bleacher.

"What about willie peralta Going up against a pretty sure. This is no but going up against milwaukee and then at tampa bay. Yeah it's a no This may be the the worst matchups For anybody we've discussed so far. I in my opinion. So i don't want at like i kind of have to in a labor unless i can find a good reliever free agent tonight because i do have peralta in india labor Which i passed you know this week. i made need i what i want to stay ahead of. You know i'm in fourth. I had a very low shot of getting third. But i'm in fourth and so i want to protect that and so i'm thinking you know what i gotta find a way to get him out of my lineup And because he's free. I could always swap in meriwether. Who's off the i l. But he's only going to pitch like a two innings a week so that may be my protection right there. I'm going to take pearl to out. And i'm gonna put a meriwether back my lineup. So i can enjoy just a little more juice added that and and go there. But i do not want peralta my lineup this week. Yeah i'm i'm not i'm not in the brewers even tampa bay that's just he's only gone four innings in each of his last two starts so i'm definitely not nervous. Not go data middle reliever For for for that series Jagoda rizzi is at texas and then our yeah at texas and then home versus arizona. I mean this feels like the easiest yet right now. we're talking. This is an absolute. I'm leaving him in my lineup. I don't care what the relief this is. One of my favorite On paper when we look at this list you provide. I'm like this is an automatic for me This this go really well for him. Now i don't know if you saw this week. When he was all bitch and complain and that he he got yanked out after twenty batters and then the astros like keating get the win they asked with came back and he was like It's bullshit i got pulled right again. Time through the order penalty. He's like the face of the times through the order penalty. He's got like three forty batting average nine hundred slug third time through the order. He is the face of it for a reason and it was eat and this isn't our dads dusty baker right is dusty baker old school dusty baker would've left him out there and he would have given up five runs on his own but new dusty baker is like. I can't do this so after twenty. I'm yanking him And so you know. Kudos dusty baker for doing that and shut up. If you if you don't wanna get pulled do better third time through the order. Don't get blasted as you have throughout your entire career With that that said the hey chabane able to get five six innings and qualify for both of these lenses yet odor. Rusi is only thirty percent rostered on. Espn know the cater shallower formats. But the fact that you can get him in you know over sixty percent of leagues in. Espn is ridiculous. this is easily At least as far as i'm concerned like the best of of these two starts that we're talking about today. So i would definitely go grab him packing naughton which feels like someone who took a time machine back from the thirties. is at chicago and versus oakland. Any interest in pacu naughton. Every time i see that unlike beck cannot possibly real name. It just cracks me up. And that i've watched him pitch on like that can't possibly be a major league pitcher so very yea i mean he threw five innings five scoreless innings against the padres recently but I'm not. I'm not buying into this one at all in chicago and glenda both teams that can kid take a deep pretty easily. So i'm staying away from it. You stay away from it as well. Yup all right What about logan gilbert he is versus boss in atkins city so one One kind of scary star and then one not too scary sir. Gilbert has been very uneven down the stretch really seems like he's kind of tiring out probably after not throwing many innings last year. I'm pass on this one. Go for the reliever a are you on paper. These seem like pretty decent matchups. But you're you're you're right in that he's looked tired. I over the last thirty days. Eight fifty nine year eight. Six home runs in twenty two innings. Thirty five hits only three walks. So that's great the twenty two to three strikeout-to-walk ratio Like herreid but he has been murdering ratios eight. Fifty nine era one seventy three whip. That's really tough. Unless you have other options. I would try to find another option. I just think it's better to avoid Especially i mean they can't see start definitely not scary For me. But the boston start. I feel like that could be really dangerous. took tucson is home versus colorado. In the at my san francisco giants any interested in tuckey. You've got to bet on the front of that. He does well enough to offset what could potentially happen on the back end of that. That's really what it comes down to. Colorado roads obviously a an attractive start but going against the giants adds a oracle still called oracle. Yes it is not a great so you have you have to take the good with the bad here With that so yeah. I would take another look at that vaccine as we were talking Definitely over gilbert And of the pictures. We've talked so far it's like outta razzies. The the best one of the bunch for me but so far like tucson is one of the top three that we've discussed so far of yell taken this week. I'm gonna take a middle reliever last four or sorry last three starts. He's got an inning then three innings than three innings. They're they're building a mop man. He's gonna go five now. Yeah no. They're building down apparently My guess is there. My guess is they're starting to just got a limited his innings. Let's seize thrown forty six In the majors all these through like twenty twenty one enough or twenty third in the minors this year account. I don't understand why they're they're not letting him go farther. I'm going gonna stay away from. I don't think he's going to be able to win. I think you're in the giants start. Could be pretty risky So yeah. I think i would go different direction. I think i would. I would go middle reliever. What about richhill versus saint louis versus philadelphia. Yup honestly that. Yes debbie with the oversee. Still the my favorite Of this matchup. But this is number two. Yeah i mean hill has been quietly pretty good recently In something i mentioned recently On a couple podcast. That guested on Is richelle has not had a blister issues since the spider tax stuff went out the window. Amazing right actually. Hit has he had a blister issue at all this year. Yeah i don't know. I don't think he has this year. I mean. He looked pretty bad when when tampa bay moved him and then he's gone to the national league and it's it's it's worked for him. Yeah i mean since the beginning of a believer From the beginning of august it's gonna to ninety four. era eight strikeouts per nine Is not walking anybody not giving up any home runs. He's given up. A total of three home runs all came in the game against the dodgers In that timeframe yeah. He's been really really good i think. And he's going deep into games guns He's done at least six on each his last two starts as gone at least a five in In all four of his last start. So yeah you're you're easily starting richhill I think yeah. He moves up to the top the list. Right there for me. He's actually above odorous but yeah. I i think he is. He's a guy should be targeting this week for sure if he's available in.

That's a pretty good like all right. We're done here. We did what we came to do right. It's like the guy or woman who gets into the presidential race because they want to like get some of their issues out there and then you know people talk about them for a little bit and then they go to like you know amy klobuchar right. I go to super tuesday. They get there. I guess i'm good but now just go endorse somebody. I'll give it up. I did what i came to do. Maybe i've got myself a spot speaking at the convention and maybe give this runnin for years. When i'm ready and that that's an opportunity to do that. I mean you get squashed two games by the yankees. Who just hit everything. Beat the guy that supposedly your ace and you say kukuchi five runs in the first couple innings. Let's go home those fun. We gave it a good run. Let's call up the kids and see you later. Competing was fun but instead they come out the next day. Logan gilbert dominates a very impressive lineup. That was hitting on all cylinders just the day before and the day before that and the next thing you know you win three straight you find. Drop the last game before the break and we can talk about why that happened. But what another incredible just Ability to stick to it not give god love that element of this team. It felt in just just in twitter and social media circles and just hearing here we go again right just that it just felt in that. First game against the yankees. You just get your doors off as you said with coochie. Oh my gosh you're supposed to be the stopper chef mad again. Just f sheffield not not again. Please please not a in there right before the you know all this. You build me up only let me down and all of that narrative you just kinda kinda sense that you kind of felt maybe at least i did is not that i went looking for it but maybe i was going to happen but it was definitely out there cynical mariner friends of mine that have just been this road for a couple of decades now and you thought okay. Here's the one in five home stance you know all the ground you got about five hundred. You're going to be now back at five hundred you're to be six seven games out the yankees are gonna pass you in the wildcard. All of it right you just to that sense and then as you said logan said not on my watch i'm gonna out eight. I'm gonna walk zero totally. Shut this crew down through seven innings. I'm gonna take care of the angels and the biggest superstar and all of sports right now or certainly a baseball and and we're going to win that series. You're going to split it. Go five hundred going to salvage it and feel pretty good about yourselves going into this so a couple of things. There's maybe four or five conversations that come out of those five or six games. So let's see if i can run through a few of them. The first is art. Yes you finally get your win with logan gilbert in game three but i would argue that the way you handled game. Two of that yankee series ends up leading to the next few games you get down as you mentioned in the five o. Whole early with kukuchi. You just doesn't have it and yet. And i'm i'm gonna talk about him in a minute because i think there's a conversation there but i'll give him credit he obviously didn't have as good stuff. His velocity was off by a few. Ticks isn't as command cetera et cetera. And he's still gives you five right now. That's not a great day. Gave up five runs in five innings going to hurt the era. He didn't play the stop or roller or anything like that. But he didn't give you two and then get knocked out of the game and now you're going full then in the second day in a row you got you through five and then credit cards. The which doesn't give up runs anymore. Right does their thing to kind of keep you in the game and you battled back. That game came down to the final battle. The game they won run game now. They couldn't do anything against some pretty good Relievers that the yankees have but once again the fight in this team just not give up and quit even down five nothing in the second innings of the yankees like no. We're going to keep battling we're going to keep scrapping and they get themselves almost back to two tying or winning the game and i wonder if that's enough to carry through to the next day. Well what's beautiful about baseball. And i think what i have learned through these journeys of one hundred sixty two games. Mike is is to your point. Right there kukuchi getting through five and at least saving some gas in the tank. What role did that play. Maybe not necessarily the next day is logan nails but in the series against the angels like you just never know how to completely measure that until you know. It's in the rear view mirror but there's no question about it that you know him sucking it up and in him badlaney and giving you five and and just at least saving some of those innings. Some of those pitches some of those arms so you could use them and when you didn't need them over the weekend to to as you said continue to be nails so that's one to kukuchi. We can't talk about having into that. Okay is he the stopper and he'd be an as you get you get beat around the day before. Twelve one sheffield's pert bad. Whatever whatever you want to describe his start as it it was it was really eye-opening in a negative way. All of the above. Yeah for for a guy that i really had high hopes for this year and kikuchi. You're all star is just been named to the all star team his first start coming off the all star naming and he lays an egg right now. Maybe he's hurt. I know he had some stomach issues right and he went on the i l. for a couple days maybe cova protocol and trying to figure out exactly not going to pitch in the all star game but that's a tough start for a guy that you're saying. Okay you're the ace. You're that you're the you're the top guy on this team right. You wanna get paid the big bucks next year. I'm not saying that this means you don't pick up the.

"The yankees did win. Two out of three from the mariners. And i've actually won three of their last. Which is weird. That doesn't feel true but it is the reason it doesn't feel true though is because one of the winds was seven innings long chattering closer came after world champion already blown a game like an hour and a half prior and then to the wins game in ten. Pm eastern games and the loss in the mariner series was the finale which aired at four pm eastern which everybody watched and went up yankee suck getting one hit in seven innings by a righty reliever who you know looking. Gilbert is good. Logan gilbert is good. He's good good rookie. He's got a lot of potential but he entered the game with a four. Ira you gotta get more than one. Head against logan gilbert so. That's our my expectations unreasonable. Now i don't think they are. They're also colored. By what i know about the new york yankees so i go into that game to go all right absolutely you know. Do they have to sweep this series when the series starts no but after you win the first two and the first one is a twelve one pounding and the second one your starter goes and inning. And it's nick nelson and somehow you're able to survive a five four victory. That should be the hard one like once you get the second one and it's impossible it's like okay now that we got that under our belts at one in the morning while most of yankees nation was asleep. Now we have that one under our belts. Let's go get the third one which is jordan. Montgomery who sort of steady this year. You can expect six innings. Three runs and sure enough. He gets into the seventh gives up just as reruns. Yeah you lose four. Nothing they get one hit offloading. Gilbert started major

"The mariners blanked the Yankees for nothing is Logan Gilbert pitched one hit ball over seven innings the best start of his young career Gilbert set a career high with eight strikeouts and retired his final eighteen batters I have high expectations but I'll take the ones when I can get along the way whatever that may be on and I feel like I'm throwing the ball pretty well right now but I know what I'm capable of and I'm just going to continue to chase and try to get better each time out he allowed a second inning double to Giancarlo Stanton and it look for it with a pitch Kyle Seager and Dylan Moore homered to Seattle salvage the finale of the three game set New York was held to one hit for the first time since September two thousand nineteen against the rays losing pitcher Jordan Montgomery struck out nine and was reach for four hits over six and two thirds including the two home runs I'm Dave Ferrie

"For betraying mama for tally. What do you do. Inter has the fact that it was both of them. Those people must be sitting in their house was just waiting and the kids are back out there on the lawn again. They've now claimed ownership rights of the long. If you're jerry dipoto and you're coming up on the trade deadline day early this year. July thirtieth. Don't forget day early. What do you do. You got two options. That i can see option one. You wait as long as possible to commend right. You wait to see where you're at at the end of the month whether teams giving you enough faith in them and then you know. I think your your needs are starting pitching relief pitching and maybe an infielder play second base or whatever you probably can keep seger and haniger or you could deal them for players of a similar slightly a similar age right like we're just talking about that's option one. That's probably where they're gonna go but let me at least present option to which is invest right. now go in go in early invest in reinforcements. Give yourself a better chance to get to july thirtieth right in in better shape and really. You don't have to go crazy to do that because if you if you if if they don't work and you bring in some reinforcements and they are like a few years ago where you brought in the to relievers and they made the team worse retried guys like you still have time to trade hannigan seger. If that's what you wanna do and essentially what you're saying is you're admitting that you could have done more this past offseason. But you weren't ready to commit to it then and instead of the commitment then you're just making the commitment a month earlier than you would but six months after you could've in the off season i had to learn who this team was and who they were all right. Well now you have to give them every opportunity to see what jerk kill. Nick was and was not close. He was taylor. Trammell logan gilbert. You had to you you know. I don't i don't harbor any resentment for their off-season i'm not saying that but you didn't invest in them. Then you could do it now. You could do it now. You're absolutely right you could go in. What is alert. is this team. Show new through eighty five games right now. What if what if they is you. Lay this out and johnston. I can imagine on his little legal notepad. I keep going back to that story right. So let's sit down your little legal pad and say okay. What what is this team. Every one of these teams lets us know who they are. What what is this team. Let us know who they are. Eighty five games in weeks before we've got to make this decision there helping your legal pad my legal pads starts. Jp crawford and it started that way for the last month and a half or so. I know over exaggerated that he's worth seven or eight games. I still think he's worth more than the three that he sitting statistically war but he is he is become an he has emerged as the energy and the face and the voice of this team and the charisma with which he plays night in and night out. He was snubbed. By many accounts for the all star game i think that puts even further little chip on his shoulder by the way. I'm glad he was snubbed. Like i i'm sorry. Sorry for him. But i hope we're not gonna get one of those like sen crawford to the all star game deals now are we. Don't think so. I don't want to now. I want him happy all at the same time. How about look on his face. When he thought he had the guy picked off the other night and they call them out and then they ended up. They ended up going back to but but they give up the graven. Gives up the double in the ninth and crawford having little time in po- yeah. Oh my gosh. The joy he ran off go. Mike awesome he just says juicy is pete carroll brings it every day secondly on my list is are. We can pitch a little bit now. I mean we got some guys in the new you. We've got the undertaker named grave man. You know that's been lights out we've got you say we've got was okay. He was and tilly took a nation and not lights out. Yes he's nerve wracking. He's still he's still okay but you say is is taking the step that we hoped he would. He's season all star. He's absolutely earned. That right chris. Flexing is better than anybody imagined. Logan gilbert were seven and two games. He started this year. Even justin down when healthy is has been capable starter in this league. And we're doing all of this really is we said earlier without forty percent of our rotation helping and including the guy that we were probably counting on the most marco. Who's been banged out this year. Oh did we mention. Yeah so we're pitching. We're pitching pretty. Well we're pitching well enough to give ourselves a chance and overcome. I think this run differential a run differential. That's bloated because marco injustice sheffield who have nearly six era. So i think it's j. Crawford i think we can pitch a little bit and then we are getting contributions from the sum of all the parts from fraley from bowers from torrens. Come back up mitch. Hat his little spurt. Kyle's had a couple of little spurts. We're still doing this without kill nick. And julio and these young guys that were holding off so you know the more. I put on that note pad. I think i come to the end of it. Salkin the summation and say this group has deserved the chance to get a little help. Get a little help. All scale all out help change plans absolutely not but this group through eighty five games is given us is told us they are worthy of a little. Bit of extra yeah. I'm sorry i agree with you. Know you're not. You're talking the right amount. But if i'm jerry dipoto why. Why wouldn't i do that now. Have a contract okay. Just me right now is. We'll give them all the help they can get and see if i can get there so i mean i. I don't think. I think if dipoto believes is going to be here long term. Then he's probably not thinking he's there in some ways they're almost probably hoping not actually sort of in the back of their heads like. I hope this team you know. If they're gonna turn into a pumpkin do it before the thirtieth right. So i don't go all in and then it looks bad because honestly that's the type of thing that could really be hard for for jerry's future like hey man you went in again and the team still fell apart. Like maybe there's something about you where you're not good at that element. So that's nerve wracking. That's a that's that's a big step if he takes it and it doesn't work it really doesn't look good for him but i there's this huge part it's like man if you just go in a little bit now so i'll give you four four nine okay before you do before you do. There's not much. Let me just add one last little thing with this team. That's coming in team from new york that's coming in. I was watching. Low the subway series with them in the mets over the weekend and iran and crew talking about them and everything else..
