"All of these people, you know, the majority of them. And I see it. I come from Logan county West Virginia. I watched a guy in Logan county West Virginia where I was from, dude freaking videos of himself and slow motion walking like he was coming out of a damn firefight. And he was really filming him in the frigging Woods in Logan county West Virginia. And absolutely, you know, he actually said, well, when I was running for office, he started running his mouth, and they would say, I challenged him. Let's go fist fight. What was it going to be violent? Well, you run your fucking mouth. That's why it's going to be about it. But one of his sergeants contacted me and said, the worst soldier that I ever freaking had in all of my career. But this guy has these videos and the truth is, is when you go back and you look at his past, the guy served for one tour in the military. And he was the guy that's sitting in the bottom of the tank. And when a guy up top said, we need a we need a smoke round. He was the one that took it out of the box and handed it up to them to stick in the frigging too. You know, that was what he did in the military. But then he gets out of the military. And then as a civilian, he wants everyone to treat him like he's just all knowing frigging military guy with all the knowledge and the fucking world. You know, I get into arguments with these people. I got another freaking asshole by the name of Sean, who runs his fucking mouth all the time. And he made it to the rifle rank of E three in the military. Once again, you know, these people have never ever spent not even 5 minutes inside of a planning session of how to even put together an operation order, but yet they become civilians and act like they know it all. And they don't. Oh shit about the military. And then the other, you know, everyone is reporting on this. So we have to address it. I did it a while ago with congressman Ted lieu. But Donald Trump wanted so badly to go to that capitol building. Now, I know why, because he wanted to go so he could go go, go. He wanted to cheer him on, so they see him there, so they go and fight. He wanted them to fucking murder Congress. It's what he wanted deep down. He wanted them because he knew that if he was there and he could tell him they would absolutely take that freaking capital. And then when he gets in the car and the Secret Service head goes now, now, you know, you got to go back to The White House. He goes to grab the wheel and Donald Trump doesn't know how to drive. So I don't even know what he planned on doing with that. And then the gut, and then takes his other hand and tries to strangle, you know, the guy. And as you.

Democrats do hold a slim majority in the House, so assuming it passes, they will then send it to the president's desk for his signature. The bill has expanded background checks and what's called a boyfriend loophole where convicted domestic violence offenders are denied guns if they have a current or past continuing series relationship of a romantic or intimate nature with their victim. Jeff Nguyen reports now on what that means for California, which has a similar law. Of California's 58 counties 37 already grant permits simply if an applicant requested for self defense. The other 21 counties, including Los Angeles, have tighter standards. For example, requiring applicants to demonstrate that they have business related or professional risks that justify them being armed. "To communication workers. Three million people joined unions in the Sierra and a very short period of time. And if you, uh, enjoy time off, it's You can think of union for that and health care, Social Security Medicare. Uh, middle class wages. Pensions older came from unions, and there was efforts to organized and if we ever lose that kind of power invested in there And working people's hands. You know, milk class will continue to shrink. So I give credit to those people the courage to fight for unions earlier on and fight to keep unions and then To give everybody else's union and therefore all of us enjoying the middle class. Sure, I want to. I just I want to take a second because it's such a remarkable story. And you know when you talk about People fighting for unions and fighting for Really basic rights. Very basic rights in the beginning. Um and these were people who had nothing except their faith, their pride and that Strengthen their back, right? But they were going every day and into these minds and coming out at the end of the week with nothing but the opportunity to do it again the next week. Um, this was again It wasn't yesterday. It was 100 years ago 1921, but their work they determined that living like that was not the legacy of Americans. This is not what they All right, uh, they had to do and they were going to do something about it. They took this into their own hands to say this is not just Right and took whatever arms they had and went to the try and free their fellows who were held in prisons and marched to the top of this hill, and it was the Government that stopped this. I think maybe saved some lives by stopping the march. Yes, it could have gotten worse. Um, I don't think there's any question that they would have been worse. And the real question is How would it have turned out now, Remember, on top of that mountain was the sheriff Logan County who was in the pockets of, uh, cooperators and have been for many, many years, and he was being paid to keep the union out and keep keep them actually to keep people in slave for all intents and purposes. Seven is a lot of money being made that it just wasn't going to the people who are risking their lives to produce coal. And this was really a crash between the workers and the people who out of the minds and in some ways owned them. They had think about this for a second, and I thought people don't know this history. Not only did they have their own stores that you had to deal and if you want to buy anything yet to build about from people you work for. They are actually made their own money When Mima that it was called script Well, you were given script as a way to be paid. And the only place that was you could use. That was a company store. So you were like tied up to this company. All the time that you were underground in a very dangerous place. Then on top of that place you could buy something was their store and they charged outrageous prices for what they sold you. And then on top of that you lived in their house. So they made money off of you in every way providing a place for you to live. They make money off of you Buy them practice had have food and goods and clothing for your family. And every place you turned was just too company controlling you. And they have their own police force to that away And you couldn't come and go freely. Easier now you could quit us soon and try to find Some other place to work. But in those days, it was extremely Difficult in in the makeup of our union, Uh, when we were formed in 18 90 most most of the people who went to the Converse convention Columbus who act couldn't even talk to each other because they spoke so many different languages are journal when it was first population was published in 25 different languages. If you can imagine that. Seven that everyone could understand what was going on if their union when the more remarkable things about the first convention have found is almost unbelievable, giving them what's going on in our country. Now they these delegates, the poorest of the poor. I wrote a constitution says you could not discriminate against anyone because of race, creed, color national origin. If women have worked in the mines, and those days, I'm sure they but then included And then after they broke the convention. Excuse me the Constitution. They took up the issue of African American workers in this country in 18 90. I think sometimes they may have been way ahead of the rest of us these times because they realize if if you don't stand together And work together, fight together for common goods, and everyone's just going to do and they understood solidarity better than most and maybe even better than today. Well. I love that. It's a testament to what was in their hearts but also speaks to leadership. I heard you Um, I saw a clip of you giving a speech. Where I think you said you cannot be a leader. If you You are a liar and you don't have courage. Well, there's two things that you you can have. You cannot be a liar and you can't be a coward. And sometimes one leads to the There's. Sometimes it's hard to figure out which came first. Sometimes people tell lives so they don't have to answer for what they've done. And then sometimes people do things in the glad about what they've done and you'll be found out. So you have to have some courage. You should always be honest, because if you're not, it's some point in time. You'll have to answer for everything you've ever done and everything you ever see. So you've got you can't you can't allow those two things be part of your makeup. If you try to be a if you want to be a great leader, a good leader. Those two things just can't be part of your makeup, right? But they're not easy to be honest all the time and to be brave and it takes both do To come out of a convention. Today, let alone 100 years ago more than 100 years ago with that kind of solidarity with that kind of commitment to every, uh every other person working in the kind of conditions you're in, that takes an enormous amount of courage. One of the things that I think that that motivated and was out loud coal miners to maybe be able to make these kinds of advancement back in 18 90 all through the twenties and thirties. You have to depend on each other so much underground because of one little mistake underground and somebody gets killed or gets injured. And one thing that minors understood. And in those days the company's separated people underground and indeed, coal camps also have access in one part of the code company town and Italians and Polish. Oh, different nationalities would be separated. And the idea behind that is if you're separated, you're never going to form a union or stand together and fight back against the company. But eventually after watching this system for so long Workers understood when the mine exploded. Everybody died. Not just, uh yep. German workers and not just black workers. Everybody now the other thing that went on for years as if the matter was killed. Uh, it's only one minor when my shift would be killed. A slate for whatever. Well, the company would kick the family of the company, their house and the next thing you know, there's no place to go for the widow and.

"Local law enforcement and higher deputy forces battled the miners for more than a week, and the battle of Blair Mountain did not end until federal troops arrived in the minors surrendered in the short term. The companies were victorious. Hundreds of miners were tried and imprisoned. But the coal miners of West Virginia were not defeated. Resistance and organizing continued for more than a decade. And by 1935. They won the right to unionized with me now take for the continuing importance of the battle of Blair Mountain is Charles Keaney, author of the Road to Blair Mountain. He also serves as vice president of the Friends of Blair Mountain. And as a history professor at Southern West Virginia. Community and Technical College. Professor Katie. Welcome. Thank you for having me, Melissa. Those who are unfamiliar with the battle of Blair Mountain. Can you tell us a bit more about what initiated it? Will the initial spark or the kind of straw that broke the camel's back, as they say, came from the murder of Sid Hatfield and Ed Chambers? To local law enforcement officers in Mingo County, who had stood up for the miners and opposed evictions of the miners from company houses. So after Hatfield in chambers were murdered, you had some very significant things that were happening in Mingo County, which was this kind of beachhead for the unionization efforts in southern West Virginia. After World War, One miners were living in tent colonies, their families, families were starving. The state troopers came in attacked the tent colony stole all the food and would not allow the UMW. Way to send in more food and supplies, and then they rounded up all the coal miners and put them in pens. Then, when the one law enforcement officer who stood up for the miners was murdered on August, the 1st 1921 5000 miners congregated on Charleston, where my great grandfather, Frank Keeney told the miners that the only way you can get your rights as with a high powered rifle. He then told them to go home and await the call to March. In between Mingo County and Charleston, where they left. There was Logan County, which was another notoriously anti union county, and they had to try to break the defenses that were placed along Blair Mountain and Ridge Lines that stretch for about 12 miles. The battle went for five days and was on the spot on the 12 Mile front. But the miners were never able to break through Don shavings defenses. Tell me a little bit more about your great grandfather, Frank Keeney. My great grandfather grew up on Cabin Creek, West Virginia. That's the home of famous NBA basketball player Jerry West. But before then it was just coal country and my family lost their land to the coal industry, which many families did during that time. The biggest inhibited economic development in Appalachians. Absentee land ownership. They lost their land. He started working as a trap boy in the minds just after the age of 10. He made his way only to the sixth grade in school. But he self educated. And during the paint Creek Cabin Creek strike of 1912 1913. He became a leader in that strike. Strike that turned very, very violent and which, somewhere between 50 and 100 people were killed during that strike, and but he led the miners to victory. And after that he was elected to president of the Union in West Virginia and president of the West Virginia State Federation of Labor. He was an ardent socialist. And rather militant, and not afraid to use direct action. I think as we're speeding towards Labour Day, which you know for so many feels like, well, you know, it's kind of the last moment of holiday. You know, some places schools sort of are marking their beginning there. But I'm not sure that we sort of retail enough in the broadest sense. This history of what labour movements really were. I mean, I think it's still jaw dropping for so many of us that it was this level of violence. These were not peaceful demonstrations in that sense. No, not at all. And the fact that it was an interracial and ethnic mix of miners around 20% of the miners that were marching were African Americans. About another 30% were recent immigrants that had come over and this was something that really scared the powers that be one cooperators said testifying after the battle, he said You cannot. Imagine the terrorism that prevailed anywhere. One could look one could see a colored man with a rifle. Those were his words they controlled 500 Square miles of territory. The U. S army was brought in the U. S. Air service was brought in. But this idea of poor whites, blacks and immigrants working together when we know that those groups often pitted against one another in today's political arena that scared the powers that be, and that's just and battled their mountain took place, You know, only around 90 days after Tulsa So all of that's fresh on the minds of the people that are taking up arms. Isn't this also part of the beginning of the language? Redneck right when you think of the word redneck? Of course, most people think of this stereotype, and there are a number of different origins of the word redneck. But coal miners and labor Pro union people began wearing red bandanas in West Virginia. It's a coal miners were called rednecks. And that meant your union man. If you said the word redneck in 1921. "To be just to the south of Jamestown pushing in towards the Grand Rapids area of North Dakota, right and we're just getting some pictures in Of Hail 80 Miles northeast of Wish, checkout to our West and boy, That's uh darn close. It's somewhere between Let's say Hennig and and baseball sized hail. It's a That's some big stuff out there and again, That was that's from those storms well out to our West, but that's the same cluster of storms that is pressing to the East. Right now and again. Uh, if you're listening to us, and you're traveling going west on 94, I'd pull over. If you can is this line of storms is, uh I think once you get past Jamestown, you're fine. But going through this right before Valley City, especially if you're just south of the Interstate two, Uh, these storms really lining up in an East west fashion, and they'll slowly be pushing here into the Fargo area. Some of them already are. But most of the severe stuff right now has been hanging out to our West. Where there's again still severe thunderstorm warnings continuing for ransom county until 10 15 looks like radar was indicating, uh, pretty good wind potential with that system with that storm. Down to our South and West Severe thunderstorm warning as Justin was saying until 10 15 near for Barnes and western CASS County, those storms are again continuing to press to the east and slight Northeast. The heaviest part of that's going to be coming pretty close to the Fargo area by around 10 30. It looks like if radar trend continues at May. Uh, it's just north. But then there's another cluster behind that that more than likely will target the Fargo area here between about 10 30 midnight So again if you're just tuning in I would say before the worst weather hits the Red River Valley if you can put your car inside the garage if you got that patio furniture outside You might want to tie that down or move that into the garage as well. 71271 1100. If you have any severe weather or rainfall reports, we're getting radar indications. Some of these cells are producing 1 to 2 inches per hour. And again that could lead to some localized flooding. We need the rain don't need it all at once. But again, we'll be keeping an eye on that plenty of moisture available again if you have any damage reports, storm reports or rainfall reports. Shoot his call 71271 1100 that goes right here into the flag studio we can. That helps also the National Weather Service because then we can pass that along to them. That info gets uploaded with them, and it helps everybody out. So Uh, let's see. So if you're just joining us, we've got a line of thunderstorms looking at radar right now. Stretching from western parts of CASS County, stretching out through, uh, Southern Barnes and statesman counties and even further West than that even stretching down now. Into areas of northern, uh, Logan County as well. These storms continue to develop out to our south and west and moving generally in the East Northeast direction. We've got what appears to be Um, we call it a meso low. That's just exiting areas of Barnes County. Um, almost the barns, CASS County line, and what we're looking at is that that usually enhances the thunderstorm. Activity and looking at radar. Sure enough, That's exactly what it's doing as, uh As we're looking at those storms, continuing to press to the east and slight northeast at about 20 miles an hour. Uh, no new warnings here, Justin and them not seeing much in the way of damage reports. Now that will come out. I'm sure with the hail size out to the west that were seen between Hennig and and just under Baseball size. Hail. I'm guessing that's going to come. Come in doing some some damage reports as we as we head throughout the night, But as these storms continue to evolve here, over the next now that the sun has gone down, Uh, we've lost the Uh, the instability that would cause tornadic activity. It doesn't Threat but also damaging winds and large hail threat as well. So once again, if you just if you're just tuning in going to kind of give you a quick rundown, then we'll throw you back to regular programming because we're not getting any any new reports in here. But we do have a severe thunderstorm warning for ransom County. Until 10 15 this evening. Severe thunderstorms. Uh, just south of Valley City, moving northeast at 15. Some of the locations in the path of that include Elliot, Uh, around nine. The Abbott and then just pass Elliott now after 9 30 also areas around Lisbon. Also Venlo and Sheldon kind of in the path of that storm as well and other severe thunderstorm. That's very thunderstorm warning for Barnes and Western CASS County. Uh, that goes until 10 15 and main threat with that damaging winds. That storm is moving northeast at about 25 And again that's already passed through areas around Catherine expecting the round Tower city in Buffalo here as well over the next half hour or so, so again, severe thunderstorms getting a little closer to the Red River Valley here. They will be arriving there knocking at the door of Fargo right now out to our West expected To move to the east and a little closer to home here within the next hour or so. Again. Tornado threat kind of diminishing a little bit, and most of that has been out to our West Southern Stutman County, especially just south of Jamestown. Numerous reports of funnels out there. No reports of any injury or damage, which is good and other than that we're looking at, uh, very heavy thunderstorms. Uh, basically hugging the statesman. County line, uh and to the South. Along Lamar County as well. So again Northern Lamar County kind of under the gun for some very heavy rain again if you have any damage, reports, rainfall reports Judas Call here at studio 71271 1100. That's the flag studios at 27701 to 71 1100. We'd love to hear your any damage reports rainfall reports again. We've been very dry lately, so any rain helps not all at once. That's for sure. We don't need the localized flooding. But again, these storms are not quick movers and they continue to back build. Um all the way out to the West. Just, uh, actually, just to the northeast of Mo Bridge. That's the backend. So we've got a ways to go tonight, folks. It's going to be a kind of a long night. As as this line of storms continues oppressed to the East and Northeast and again, uh, this will turn into more of a Hail, damaging wind threat as we had closer to the midnight hour opposed to a tornado threat as well. With that there is.
