East Boston Residents Protest Controversial Electrical Substation Project

"Begin today in east boston. Where community members are protesting an electrical substation project. That has been in the works for years. Now eversource wants to build the substation in a flood prone area near chelsea creek. That's across the street from a popular playground near tanks of jet fuel for logan airport. The utility says the project poses little risk to the public while local residents worry. It could catch fire and explode. And there's another complication. Many of the residents in this densely populated community who would be affected by the project speak spanish as their first language and have complained that the department of public utilities and the energy facilities siting board. Those are the two state bodies charged with permitting. The project have failed to make the citing process accessible for them to participate so this is a microcosm of environmental justice issues. Here to talk with us about. It is wbz miriam wasser. Hey there mariam. Hey kiana okay. So let's start with the project. Why is it up for consideration in the first place. And why are we talking about it. Now yeah sure so electrical substations are those networks of metal metal towers lattice structures and wires that you might see along the street or behind a tall fence there really ugly but they're really important. Part of our energy infrastructure. Basically when energy comes when electricity comes out of a power plant it's at a really high voltage and it stays at that voltage to travel long distances but then it needs to be at a lower voltage when it gets to your house so substations are make that possible an analogy that i like to use his. If you think of the high voltage lines as a as a highway and the lower voltage lines as the streets leading to your neighborhood. A substation the off ramp it slows things down. Because you can't drive sixty five miles an hour on local streets so we need substations but the question in this case is. Do we need one in east boston on the chelsea creek and as you mentioned before the utility eversource which is a company that wants to bill that says we do they propose this project in twenty fourteen and argued that it was necessary to meet. The electricity needs of the community and logan airport.

"South Boston is smack in the flight path of Logan airport. It has a history of forced busing battles and was home to gangster Whitey Bolger. It's long been embraced by Hollywood. Yes. Sorry. It's going to be sliding this over here. It also feels under assault by new residents discovering its seaside charm there are tensions like my cousin. Who's on works on the show? Weird, but Frankie's considered local her mom grew up here and would drop Frankie off at her mom's or the woman who was like her second mom, in fact, they're filming today in that woman's house. Oh, it's been so incredible. We're here to choose house. You characters mother played by Rosie O'Donnell. And I see these giant great Danes. I lean used to be my babysitter. He's like you. We've hung on when you were a baby. Gimme a hug it who's just like rate. So the moment there had been some hesitation about the show from here. The neighbors are being gentrify and you play a single mum who has a very full life. And yeah. Sexuality, you know. And it was concerned about that. Have you felt any of that? No, actually, well, the people in south Boston are very welcoming to me here. Now, I really struggled with people's reactions to the title and the way in which people treated me because of it like I was trying to do like, a reclaiming of a drugstore term. And instead it's sort of gave permission for people to act crude to me. And I it was like how do we sort of address this in a way that feels true to the story and not apologizing and it's also sort of like if we're talking about a young woman who is labeled snow, right? How do we then allow her to outgrow it, and and shed the label and evolve herself new kidding those labeled in highschool once you're the the so-and-so girl, whatever it is women carry that the whole life. Yeah. It's I think that's something that I personally have. Had a very complicated relationship with sort of how to be perceived in the world, you know, I know that sounds now like foreshadowing of problems around women and sexuality and bullying that are still to come. We're going to get to them. But on this day, we're joined by Rosie O'Donnell who plays Frankie's fictional, mom, and has met the real thing. I said to her mother at dinner once I said, you know, your kid's a genius. You got that? This is going to be a huge hit show and at the premiere she came over to meet you. You know?.
