"Take it i. I'm not we can't do the whole. He's so horrific. Although i was thinking about it and it did you ever see the video of fergus. Singing the national anthem at visit basketball. Like all star game though. Okay everybody do yourself a favor and just look up. Forgive basketball star spangled banner. It is one of the worst and best renditions. Oh my god stars bingo banner scene and i love it. It's it's we should adopted as like how are we sing it to you and perhaps even posted on our channel kotecha luck. But i mean there is. There's no even like there's no even segue to that. I gave away what we're talking about from that opening moment from the opening moment which we oh i guess i should say welcome back to. Let's get typical heim lizzy stewart. And i'm arden and hausky and you know we nail the intro. Every time every time. I at least you're the one who remembers. I like your you start at like you always do the interim so we don't do the intro. I don't remember it's like a thing on my brain right. Rarely we really rarely start off on theme strip. You know we almost always start off flake somewhere else and somehow through the use of a map. Find our way to the The episode topic. But i don't even know how you don't just start singing the star spangled manner. No when you're going to talk about our snack manner. We love a musical number. How much So any who. Today i mean we're just treating you guys to a sweet sweet full episode about the national anthem herself. And i like so when you suggested the star spangled banner cocoa cocoa. Yeah that sounds good and then started researching it and it's just one of those topics that like you know the song But like it was so full of like good information and like twisted. Our twists and turns in like donna rabbit hole lake because obviously the surf spangled-banner is about the flag and it's not just about lake the flag it's about very specific flag. That was fun sean. I had no idea about that story. And i deal that lake. That specific flag like is still around. Like there's always still fully alive. It's still be no. I had no idea. So i i. This was like a gift that kept on giving today when i loved that age I love that for you. I i know a little couple fun. Facts about the star spangled banner. But it's also one of those things where i feel like i'm going to be surprised and delighted at every point in this episode recording. Yep because i think people want to write it off because we know the words and we know francis scott key great name by the way. That's it you know like. We don't need to learn anything else. But i'm like i think there's so much more to uncover. There's so much more to uncover. Not the least of which i didn't put in the full In the notes because my god it's gone very long. It's like five stanzas like or five whatever it is quite long like the real the actual thing. Yeah like we only ever sing the first part we made some. We made some cuts internally. Which i do think Was the right move. I think so. But i guess before we get into it. Do you wanna talk about today's sasha ronin sources of karst of car. Today's search a ronin sources. There's a there's a lot of them. The library of congress multiple Like sites or pages or whatever from the national park service which is not a site expected to find a lot of made this. They do this where they have. They have to for the house information about stuff that has nothing to do with parks. And you're like okay in. Ps go gough go out. They were very helpful. Dot com obviously obviously and a great article by caitlyn berry from smithsonian magazine which was like full of information about the actual flag like below civic flag. Not the american flag. In general like super. Great article love love love. Yeah okay are you guys ready to say. Can you see what this episode is. All about baby rare. Let's jump into the basics so these notes are coming from the national park service. The us national anthem and the flag that inspired it. Our legacies of you guessed it. The war of eighteen twelve where british forces gathered to attack baltimore in september of eighteen fourteen. So this whole thing started in baltimore. We are in the middle of the war of eighteen twelve yearly now the years eighteen fourteen. So maybe we should've figured out a different name for the war wasn't specific. I love the war of eighteen twelve. Because i think that they were ambitious. And they're like we're going to wrap this up in one year. We can get her done. We can get her done. We can get her done. Boom boom In and out one year boom bang after twenty five hour bombardment of fort mckenry. They failed to penetrate. Baltimore's defenses and withdrew. So this is the british they are. They are not knocking and ding dong in on fort. Mcmurray boom boom boom boom. I want you in my ram sound weaken maytag now whatever. I'm great delusional i've left. She's out by raising. Hey they're just they're just trying to. They're trying to get baltimore. They're trying to get this for it and can you. This is what i love about. War early war is the fact that cannons aren't working like we can't get through to flirt. I think that's hysterical. That there was once a time where we just couldn't get through a wall No matter how hard we are how hard the enemy tried in this case the british so baltimore bombs burston all around..

"Holidays your doing. What is this. What is this choice that we did not discuss. Time got to make a bowling bowl. Joyce just go for it and here you are going here. I went for excellence. What what did you think that accent was. It's like oh russian. German type of thing sure. I thought transylvanian yes. I 's okay. Yeah okay probably actually from the movie. Transylvania it's probably like the animated movie. Yeah it's probably like the vampire dab roy's yeah absolutely absolutely. How does your doing so. Welcome back to. Let's get typical. I'm lizzy stewart and i am arden. Wallin jesse arden voluntary. All my didn't volunteer scared me. I know your name is in german but it is fun to say with like a german accent. Volunteers gave i think there's always right syllables. It does that's a good accent sank. It's my angola longer. It just may unger Obviously very good whenever she steps down. It'll be a travesty to me. My god what will you do. I mean let's hope there's somebody as great as aga and somebody who has a name as angler angola another cab. There is no longer. There's only one on. Just hope she likes stays in public life. Yeah me and and the fed the germans which I'm trying to find a segue from ongoing miracle to the pentagon. And i can't find i you know. Sometimes there just isn't a way to get there sometimes. There's no bridge from what we start talking about. Which is if you can believe it. Never planned We never talk about what we're gonna talk about at the top of each episode and sometimes the The segue is there and we can just hop on it and sometimes you are in germany trying to get back to a military building And it's leg nar okay. Here's a connection. I'll we care. Is the connection. So unlimited is the chancellor of germany and the pentagon was built during world war two or heart of world war two. I don't know if you guys knew this. Hush hush germany fig part of world war two two. Yeah really in the weeds of that war yeah very obscure obscure part of it Man what a shame that the pentagon wasn't like ready for war to you like it was built during that time so it wasn't active really needed. It we did. I mean by the time it was built it was the war was basically not what wasn't done but it was. It was completed goes on the decline. Yes within was enact three. Yes three act structure now but i i appreciate your effort at trying to segue into this episode about the pentagon. You're so welcome. I think it's as good as we're gonna get so surprise. Were doing an episode today on the pentagon the building her self. I know very little about the pentagon other than the fact that it's a military building yup and it's shaped i would say interestingly On i don't know too much about her history. Who like what like her out like the function as like who works within her Specifically other than like you know getting more specific than just like the military. So i'm excited to learn more but before we all learn together. Do you want to talk about today's search. Says yes. today's sources not unlike the sources that we had for our last episode that you did in his history dot com and the department of defense. Yes simple easy beautiful covergirl. that's covergirl. there's nowhere else to go but the department of defense and history talk off the little if you can't find it doesn't exist if you can't find out there there's no there's no hope friel exactly right so let's jump in to the first question of the day which is who is who is the pentagon what's your of you who don't know or who may be abroad and have never heard of the pentagon guess like you wouldn't necessarily here of the pentagon if you didn't live in the united states so i think that's also what's interesting about it is that it's kind of like nine like a thing you would assume that people in other countries know about right so anyways. The pentagon is the virginia headquarters of the us department of defense located in a massive five cited concrete and steel building. That is a potent symbol of america's military strength with more than six million square feet of floor space. The pentagon ranks among the largest office buildings in the world. She's big. I didn't i didn't know she was like that. Big big but i didn't know it was like well also it must the footprint has got to be huge because there aren't like skyscrapers that are office buildings but there this is only like i think. Four or five stories like it's really short right exactly like like why wide geez wider than she is exactly exactly right nowadays. The pentagon houses the office of the secretary of defense the joint chiefs of staff and the highest. Ooh echelon yes girl. Yes i knew. I knew it but i just had to think about it. Uh-huh the highest echelons of the army navy marine corps air force so all the generals all the generals. You're all the whatever. The highest ranking admirals is probably more is admiral higher than a general. Not we didn't have is on this. I can't remember i know. Well i think it's also different per branch yet but like the ones with like all the strikes and all stars and all the metals and very very serious frown lines. Those guys are gals. Are the people working at the pentagon yes like. You don't just you. You have to like be somebody to having office at the pentagon. Oh no no no. No it. Interns do not get their own office. You must medals mariner dangling things to have an all these airy intimidated to go to the pentagon i think i. Oh yeah i. I don't really really should know even just driving by like oh my god i wonder how close you can get to it. Do they do tours of the pentagon.

"Them back to. Let's get civil. I'm lizzy stewart and am arden wallace. Hausky and today we are not alone. Both metaphorically and literally we are graced by chew presence Presences presents is our presence is they are sisters. There are cousins. they're our family. They live under the more banana family. You probably know they're very successful. Podcasts cam while we're joined by kate linen what thanks for sister's sister wives so nice to be a part of life so good so much to talk about. I need someone to talk to about sister wives. I love wives so much. I haven't watched it in many many years. But i remember when it first came out. I thought as a young pup. This is my shot for reason. I wear we now for like ten ten years. I've stuck with raising damn bring us up to date. I check headlines and i check other people's feedback but i wanna where are we right now in the universe. Are you okay with me spoiling it for you or you gonna yes. We're at a point now where we just had a season finale and wonder to sister wives out of the four may go from the family. No one wants to do polygamy anymore. They're over which you want. You want sister wife story. Yeah them to run away to join in to make like a new sister white family. Are they going to do. You think they're going to break off to gather or they're going to break off and just go their own. I don't think they will. So some of the wives are at a point where their children are having children. Christine wants to move back to utah to dote on the grandkids. And who doesn't no one else is like there. The rest of the families in flagstaff. No one else wants to move again. So christine's like peace out of here. Which christine i thought was the one who was the most. So it's been a shot. Nothing like a grandbaby. Grandbabies will change everything. Think so. I think you're right my grandpa. Poppy stop smoking his whole life as soon as i was born. Oh turkey look what. You did pretty impressive. You're very present. Insulin could move to utah. So this is an amazing place to transition to sort of our topic. Wear your guests. And it's let me give you a diving board in which to leap off of and so obviously if it's not clear to you yet transitions right into the history of the fda. It's just there is so seemless. What more could you ask for is as seamless. We are talking about the fda today specifically in the scope of more on the vaccine side. As i know. And i have learned in researching this the fda they do eighteen thousand things. Yeah they do a lot. They're they're monitoring too much. I think there's no wonder things fall through the cracks in my opinion because you can't monitor food and drugs and god knows what else and have an shoot one hundred percent every time so that too much. It's too much. It's too much but because it's too much we had to narrow our focus just a bit and since i don't know there's a pandemic going on as seemed as good a time as any to take on the sort of drug element of the d. of the fda if great so before we jump in art and you wanna tell our listeners. What our harsha ronin sources are today sharon and star says they. This is coming from the fda where it's just such a relief to have a government website that tells you things about what they do. Char the fda the cdc. And then i think. I don't know where yours came from is ever years came to yemen also came from the. Cdc where else do you go there. You're gonna go where else you gonna go. Yeah so straight from the horse's mouth so aren't would you like to start us off with a brief little history or her story as we like to call it of. Thank you fidel fidel. I'm god for da. I feel like people would be much more into the fda if she was called. Hadda you kidding me. Don needs her own song and youtube channel. She has it. She hasn't she's a ton of doc baller. So little history of fidanza. The food and drug administration the biologics control act of nineteen o two was enacted by congress to ensure the protection of americans by providing consistently tape biological products. Grace things shouldn't kill us. We love this. The act not only serves as the underpinning for today's regulation of biological products but also marks historic turning point in the way america protects the health of its citizens so what was the act that was like maybe we shouldn't mike. Maybe we should test things before we insert them into people's bodies throw it. Why not just off the top of the head in one thousand nine hundred to turn of the century. We're drowning in steal. This is ten years before the titanic is going to sink. So we're we're different people. We haven't happen or step. Let's just try to keep them.

"Welcome back to. Let's get civic i'm lizzy stewart and i'm are unwilling to hausky and do you want to tell them what you're doing right now. I eight is approximately. What the health time is it. It is six forty seven my time here in hot springs. Arkansas am we should say. I am in hot springs. Arkansas and i am currently under a blanket chess is i am trying to record in the most echoey house. I have ever been in it super cute. It's lake covered in ship lap. The most echoey of the of the of the wooded material yes the most echoey of the laps for sure and i My only recourse was to record a gigantic blanket which we have been using for picnics. And thank god is like gigantic. Because otherwise i don't know what i would do an attack crawl under my legs. Excellent so if you hear meowing here any sort of feline noises you look like you're in the the blair witch project i know. I mostly just a disembodied head because it's a dark blanket. And so the only thing lizzy can see is my head. You're shroud roof. Hsieh shroud of turin like reflection from my computer screen. And look you guys. We go above and beyond to make these episodes happen so you have to bear with us but speaking of cats i have a. Oh my god best lead or what you did you gave me such a great lead-in because not last night. The most extraordinary thing happened to me. And not just to me but to too many people. Because i was at a yankees game yesterday a home yankees game and it was just like it was what i say. It was a boring game. I mean it was a boring game. It was like the yankees were playing. Really bad other team was like fine and they were like yeah so not much not much action and then in i think it was like at the the bottom of the seventh-inning i'm i'm just kind of like chilling like watching the game and then my boyfriend goes. There's a cat on the field on the field and he starts freaking out and sure enough like right outside. The dugout of the other team is a full hat and and it was just sitting there. And i just remember being like where did he come from. Get there 'cause you know at baseball games. There is somebody at every entrance. It's not easy to to get anywhere without having to like go by somebody who's like who are you in. Is this your section and sure enough. This cat divide all all laws and just like appeared on the field in front of the dugout and at first curse the players. Were kind of like okay. Maybe we'll keep hugh keelan. Do we hold for cats. Do hold for cat. Nobody at new and then the cat made a beeline for like center. Field and adm freaks out. The players are like we clearly cannot continue with this cat fully. I mean and it was sprinting. To be fair the cow is probably like absolutely terrified because they was like look bolting across the field. It did this for like maybe a minute and it would like it. Like ran to the back of the field like jumped up on the ledge of the back in the field and sat there for like fifteen seconds. And i'm the whole time. I'm just like nobody's doing anything. The players are just standing standing there looking at this cat and then finally they send out the poor grounds crew wrangle. This cat. there's like eight of them and immediately. I'm like they're not gonna catch this cat. This cat is way too. Quick scott is doing ensuring of. It's like another three or four minutes linked to ground screw kind of like closing in on the cat and the cat bolting and then the stadium erupting because we won the cats and not get caught. We right we want this to. If this was the whole rest of the game i would have had. Its third clearly the most exciting thing that you guys had seen that day literally in this year it was like when i say i lost my absolute mind. I i lost my absolute mind because it was just so surreal that it was happening and that it took them so long to like rangel. The cat that. I've oh my god. I look at national television. Because i'm pat you there. Replaying that moment and is was there do does your Does your instagram feed. Also include like you screaming at about and down gone on for for that. I cannot wait to get off the zoom with you and go watch that. Oh my god. It's like ten times better than the bear video. No oh my god yeah. It's bear you see animals. The way reacting seeing animals in well the beer was in its natural habitat but lake be fair. Yeah the cat on the field. I was like wait. Because i mean you think birds brought up the thing you see. It's an open it's an open. Adm don't think a full grown cat is now just saunter onto the feel. I looked it. Where i just wanna know how god there i two is. Somebody's telling you. Now i bet it's farrell stadia. There's feral cats you know it's just everywhere omega. That's crazy yovany. I love that story than i can connect it. I can follow through line of cat to connect us to our topic for today. Heck cab bring us there. So as i said i am on a month long road trip and a last week. We were in saint louis and so we were. We decided to go. There's like right now because of cova head like unless you get tickets like a week in advance you if you're trying to get them to go up in the art for like the next day or two it's you. They're not available bite. You can go see like this. Apparently really great documentary film about the gateway arch. That's like a half hour. So i bought tickets which spoiler alert. Today's episode is about the saint. Louis art So i got tickets for the movie. And i don't know what i thought like. I don't know if i thought like it was just gonna be like when you walk into the base of the of the arch early. I don't know what i thought but like we were leaving that day right after the film to go to I.

"Welcome back to. Let's get civil. I'm lizzy stewart and i am hausky. Hey we did that at the top. We didn't get through a whole conversation without saying who aren't we did it. We did it and we did it. And when you score a perfect ten episodes thank you so much for joining us by only get worse from here. No we did. We're you know here's the thing you win some you loose them and i believe jfk said that. So that's how we have to remember. We're not always gonna get an exact auto. He's going to get it right. Always gonna nail it. So congratulations to us for nailing the intro which was three three seconds long. It's literally the easiest thing in the world and I mean like could g you carry that way for the both of us to you. I mean i couldn't do this without you. Couldn't introduce this show. Sometimes the best thing for me to do is just stay silent and let you carry you know. And that's what i feel like. Sometimes our listeners are like lizzie should just listen to the. Should we beg of her to stop reading. We've bag have heard a stop trying to read the words that she can pronounce But that's part of the fun part of the love that you know. Yeah it's like will. Will i be able to get through an episode knowing all the words that are on the page. Definitely a question will be able to do an episode where she says. She doesn't say oregon yet. Short and in always dicey always dicey always dicey you keep people on. Your toes is oregon or on their toes. Oregon oregon. You know for everybody. It's oregon for artists oregon. And here we are and as in syria. You know what's great about our episode. Today is there is no chance i say this and i'm going to regret it but there's no chance that oregon could have really anything to do with this topic other than it being located on earth right in earth on earth or earth on earth. Not in it. Because it's on the surface short that makes them in would be like the mantle and the core and all that crap i guess but then like are we not counting the atmosphere. Sure although that's not on earth. I feel like that's around the earth and create. Its by the yard is earth. it is better. I don't think it's on earth but then like the air that we're breathing right now. Yeah that's not like in the stratosphere is on so is the air we're breathing now on earth like above earth. You're thinking as you see you're thinking as earth is only an thinking of this surface. Yes yeah but what. I'm questioning and why we're astronauts is is is not the atmosphere and the gaseous elements of earth also earth. So it's like in an injury rid of such a good question. Then is land in earth because earth is also comprised like the first layer of race gas. Right then the second layer of earth is sort of land and water and then underneath that layer is liquid hot magma. I feel like this is a question that must this is like a neil degrasse tyson level question. But let's let's get the problem with asking yielded tyson. This question is that it will be a twenty minute long dissertation which i will thoroughly enjoy but then at the end who will have been like. It doesn't really matter. Call it what you want right. And i mean and i have to respect because in the end of the day where all insignificant and that's the crazy thing about space yes and this is why i love talking about space because inevitably whether it's you know what is the correct preposition or should we be doing. Xyz whatever. I love talking about space. 'cause it always always goes philosophical. Yeah and like makes you. It makes me think gonna love those kinds of conversations so like i love talking about space me too i mean you and i are obviously astronauts training a hundred percent and share a deep love of space so this episode. It's kind of like one of our first forays into states and we haven't really about space. I know 'cause we we've been like waiting for you. Know the right moments to tackle it because it means so much to both of us. We talk about space. So i mean we had to do this one because the anniversary of this event it was on the twentieth of july so it just passed us and also there's like a lot of space is happening right now so good but today we're gonna talk about the infamous the iconic moon landing a perper server. I mean one small step you know what i mean like had some lines written down. I don't know. I couldn't find anything that talked about that. Although it wiley how he chose to say say that how w rehearse was a bad dress. Good show you like like. Did he prepare his oscar speech. In the event he did get to land on the moon or was that going to drink it until you. Don't prepare your oscar speech and then you get up there and cry and thank your agent and your mom. Yeah i do have a fun. Fact that i'm not gonna say yet just in case you included it in the notes but remind me okay. I don't remember where i saw. This is probably something like article but remind me that. I have a fun fact. I did tell you about so kid may or may not be in the notes okay. Great it's crazy so before we really jump into the moon landing. The moon landing jewelry. Talk about today's sources. I see a lot of new friends. And i'm so excited. So there's three three sources. One of them is a national geographic kids because you know what they make really distinct sink. Simple easy to digest like adults. Don't need this to right but like they don't you know it. Just they give you like a really good level of detail versus like technical jargon it gets well-balanced well-balanced and this particular net. Gio article was adapted from a book called ladders. Earth science exploring above and beyond by stephanie harvey and from space encyclopedia a tour of our solar system and beyond by david. A guar amd patricia daniels so nat. Go took those two sources. As two books. I think and kind of condensed their information down into the one of the resources that we used and loved that that anytime there's a nat. Go for kids..

And how the day is gonna go. This week rightly very low. Very low and unpredictability scale. Which ready for i'm ready for. I mean i'm it's like. It is shocking. How much you've been be bopping around like It would kill me lizzy lido now. Did i tell you what's about to come up now. Gosh are you hitting the road. Again i am. We are where where in what. What were you going. Listen to this doozy okay. So we're going from new york to ohio Then we're going to drive down to missouri to season for. Hey and then we're gonna spend like a week ish kind of like bopping around that part of the country like where do we want a good day. Let's go here and see what nebraska has to offer shore and then we're going to a wedding at just outside knoxville. And then we're gonna go back to the carolinas Big go to greensboro. Probably drive down to alabama back up to the carolinas or the league and then up to back to new york city. Like limiting villar can. How long is this. Like whole stretch of time that you'll be away going to be. I mean at least three weeks. Yeah depending on how it all turns out like how long we spend in certain places like i could see a bit longer but you know will it. Now it's an excited. But i'm also like well. I highly recommend while you guys are in missouri visiting the sweet little town of independence missouri. Where none other than harry s. Truman is from his house is tore his house. It's amazing you would love it if you have an afternoon. Go to independence. It's worth it. The truman library is also there which is cool. I'm so excited okay. So just putting out in your mind any of our listeners who are in missouri highly recommend visiting independence missouri and going to the truman house in the truman library. I love that it's called independence missouri. It is and it's like it's small. It's really cute. They have these lake. Silhouettes of harry s truman walking with his lake kane and bowler hat. And they're all over the place so it's barry we lean into truman in attendance missouri. Obviously obviously it's the best. It's okay. I'm gonna put it on the list. Put it on the list. It's worth it's worth it threat. That love love love love but the kind of unrelated to truman. The middle of the country and anything else we've been talking about. We're talking about something. Not i don't want to call it random because it's not random but not it but it is kind of related to what we were talking about. Because we're talking. Is it the middle of the country and it's always hieaux in minnesota illinois yet. All those states. You're right gosh yes so today. We're talking about the northwest ordinance. Which is something that i know i learned in school or we touched on very briefly but could not tell you what it is in.

"Everybody welcome back to. Let's get civil. I'm lizzy stewart and i'm am earn warranty and it's almost worth a joe so close. She's so close. I can smell she so close the hamburgers and hotdogs. I can snow freedom. I really i can smell it in the air and it smells like a charcoal grill. It does it does smelling charcoal grill. And it smells like the. Nathan's hot dog eating contest. Which is my for it. We then. I okay so we went to coney island the other day. Yeah i have never. I had never been. I have lived in this study thing. It's insane. I have lived in the city for like eighteen years. I don't know since you knows import. And i had never to coney island it was. We didn't go to like we went to the beach. We didn't go to the amusement park. But we like went to the sharia went to the beach. It was really fun. But i was like i want to get a nathan's hot dog because i've never like it's part of the thing you have to do. Yeah but the line was so long very long very long there. Especially i mean. Also you're trying to get a nathan's hot dog in late. June at coney island. Yeah that's like when the people come to get the hotdogs. It's true i mean i guess you got an offseason okay. I guess maybe. I thought it wouldn't be so long because it was a thursday at lake or honey. Kids are not in school. That's true all bets are off. God there were small children's are off at the theater yet strip but it will be worth it when you do finally happen. I mean you can get a nathan's hot dog elsewhere but it's like it's the stand. Yeah yeah yeah. Yeah also super fun. In coney island is the the brooklyn. Cyclones which is a minor league baseball team that s and they play in a stadium on kona. It's the best of we taste it. We've passed like either. They were playing. There were warming up but like we pass now. He's like a little opening and they were like baseball players like hanging out and they wave yes. It was taken to like fifteen dollars. Oh like the trash. The trash goes to these games myself included and you just like Tickets are so cheap. So you're literally sitting like behind home plate through that's probably twenty five dollars though is like jerry from staten island. Jerry's like heckling the other team and they're right there. It's the best that's west. Yeah so definitely recommend not. And eventually you will get your. Nathan's hot dog i will. I will so with that said in celebrating fourth of july. We are unfortunately not doing a deep dive into the nathan todd dog eating contest although idea for next time We are in fact gonna finally like finally start to tackle the one. The only the reason we're all here. The revolutionary war. Hello okay get your bayonets. Get your pantaloons because we're back to seventeen harish. Nah who said. This'll be a two part episode. This is part one which is all about what led up to lay revolu xiang and then part two which comes out the week of july fourth will be all of the battles the boom booms the bang bangs the actual war herself. But we can't understand the boom booms and the bang bangs that understanding. What would they british were up to. But don't were that a lotta stuff. They were doing a lot of stuff. Yeah they're up to some shit. I mean the british were shitty. No offense story english listeners. You know we love you. But like y'all are being kinda dicks. If i do. I saw myself are you just did i think also like part when i read it. The some of the stuff was like they had paid a lot of money for the french and indian. Warren's like oh look you know like the british the british did like well okay store but also then like but but then i go back to you how they ever thought that they could like. Have these colonies an ocean away when we didn't yet have like steam power and like not expect. A revolt is like the pinnacle of stupidity. Like a little bit of forward thinking a little bit of light the british empire. That was like a thing they were like empire thinking. They're like you know what let's kind of do what the romans did. And just trying to take over everywhere. This isn't surprising to me at all. This is classic british because they wanted to be like the french and the spanish who were both also off in. You know south america in africa. Just being like. I think this is my land. This is my founded. Nobody else's here. Except i think he will support king george. Yeah they don't matter so before we jump into. You wanna talk about our sire. Iron and charges the session ronin star says are because we didn't use her last week. We had had to go back to our tried to trusted. Drew friend history dot com now. Yeah they had like they're the ones that had like the seven causes of the revolutionary war. Which i do yet. It didn't use all of them because they are the ones who are like lexington and concord. Now's like already shouldirefi battle. I think we are already biding k. Dot co dot com had a great lake something similar but then also like what people were thinking more independently they went a little grow and then britannica just a little bit for some odds and ends. It's tie up those loose ends. His loose revolutionary war ends.

"It's perfect. It's perfect dessert. It's a perfect treat. I used to take all of the like you know. Little what are what are those. Things called a gigantic. Yo yeah those gigantic chocolate sprinkle things. Yeah the the sprinkles used to take them off of one side and put all of this spring goals on the other half so then have the plane half first and then i would have the sprinkle half that i needed for myself and while oh wow was it amazing. That's crazy like a double chocolate fudge on that one side Exactly right exactly right but welcome back to. Let's get simple. You guys i'm lizzy stewart and i am arden wallet. Hausky and you know i did. I wanted to laugh because obviously last week. We did our juneteenth episode and i think the day after it aired it became a federal holiday. I knew it was really really of the moment finger on the pulse. I had a meeting. I was supposed to have a meeting for work with a federal employee and she emailed me that morning and was like i'm not working today biden. Just sign off and rescheduling eating till next week. And i was like yes. Great bless bless. Take it off. Take it off. Joe dot a once again finger on the pulse. This podcast but juneteenth is now federal holiday which is so exciting and obviously so appropriate and it is still pride still the month of june still pride month and because of that. We thought that we would sort of do what i consider to be our favorite thing in the world and that is looking at a supreme court case and talk with you know my nemesis. The supreme court of the united states. And so today we're talking about lawrence. V texas which was a landmark. Lgbt ruling like before a burger fell yes. But not that. I mean like yes before but it was decided in two thousand three which is ensuring. Not as before as you would think not as before as you would think considering. This case is about like yacht. This should have been decided in the fifties like it's so stupid But i'm excited talk about it. I had no idea what this case was about. and it's. I'm glad that we did this. I am very grateful for justice kennedy. He like kinda made it his mission to make sure that not only was this case. Decided in the correct way but that it overturned a previous Court case that have been decided by the court not that long before this was decided and That was you know. Basically gave permission for gay people to like have sex with their partners right right but made that not a crime which is Which is insane insane that it was a crime before this moment. I mean it's insane announcing it's it's completely you dot s dot for this to be what it is completely you data stat at us dot. But it's the ussr dot it. Kind of feels like in this court case will shore. I mean the idea that like what you do with your intimate partner any visiting it's a law. That's an insane is insane but it did for a very very long time. So let's i think let's dive in chump our our sources or it's shortlist today But it's a good one. It's a good one it's britannica and oh yeah oh yea oh yea i mean are like literally our best friends i feel like that's this is why i love doing supreme court cases because i feel like we just we get we get the girls together and we're like lenience talk to me and it's just us as just the only one that i was sad that i couldn't use because i it didn't pop up was history dot com. I feel like if we had history dot com on here. It would be a full well right. Would it would be a tonight. Yep correct correct. While let's talk. I mean let's just get the overview who is she what is she. What is lawrence feet texas. So all of this is coming from britannica and as lawrence texas is a legal case in which the united states supreme court ruled six three on june twenty six two thousand and three texas state law criminalizing certain intimate sexual conduct between two consenting adults of the same sex was unconstitutional. So this is. This is bananas that we thought that like what two people to consenting adults are doing in the bedroom has anything to do with the constitution or is anybody else's business or is anybody else's business. I mean considering that benjamin franklin is one of our founding fathers that he would have wanted all of this to be okay. This is what he would have intended. Oh stallion in the sheets The result eb lawrenceville. Texas was that sodomy laws in a dozen other states were invalidated this ruling and the decision overturned the court's ruling in bowers v hardwick in night which was in nineteen eighty six which had upheld georgia's similar sodomy law so basically the texas law that this is challenging effectively made quote sodomy illegal unconstitutional. Your criminal act. Which again is crazy. Gay rights groups hailed the verdict as a historic day in the evolution of civil rights in the united states whereas conservatives. Oh i know. I feel like we can have here. Yeah castigated block wide that word. I don't know why that word it looks like castrated can astound castrated. But it's but it's not it's not conservatives didn't like the decision and the held a sign of the country's moral decay. Of course we're saying before our very eyes so the question before the court the question that the supreme court justices had to consider in regards to this texas law.

"Back to. Let's get cynical. I'm lizzy stewart and i am arden warranty hausky and the changes. Just keep on coming you. And i both there are just changing things left and right. I changed my hair colour. You're changing your apartment. A ha. it's i wonder are the planet's doing something that's creating this. Sort of internal chaos. I feel like to save like multiple planets. Feel like they're in retrograde. I feel like is not the right tone. Because often i feel like when we say mars retrograde. It's like that's why everything is bananas but like right away. But i think we've got positive changes like you look stunning in your new hair. Colour thank you also. Did you say mars retrograde and mean mercury at is exactly right. No no that's true. I know you're super into astrology. Stuff and i was like. Oh my god. Do i now have to worry about mars. No mercury mercury. Mercury migrate to to be fair to you. There are times when like it's not mercury. that's messing up. It's something else yet but but you're right. I do feel like the changes are not bad changes. Good changes is my hair now. Red ahead shoutout to all my heads out there in and you're moving and you're moving apartments at a very exciting way so i am. It's just it's just a time to be alive. Summer is is upon us. It is ninety degrees. I'm sweating And we're here to party. We're here to party. And i have to say what we're going to talk about today. Feel like it's already party. It's you know what's more party in feel than breaking then the break-in then the breaking of this. As is dr yeah. It's insane to me that this happened and was allowed not allowed to happen but that this happened in recent history. Like i mean i know that now the nineteen seventies do feel super super far away. But like there's a lot of people involved that are still alive. Oh yeah he hasn't foley living fully living and like still kicking around like the this is it's like what forty years ago. Yeah yeah that's not a long time ago now and what what unfolded on this faithful evening and then everything afterwards i can. I still have a hard time wrapping my head around. I'm like way they did what he did. What this is so dumb. It's so dumb and like it's one of those things where like you walk that fine line and it's like it's either brave or stupid when somebody does something crazy right like. Yes either. Good for them. You're so braver. Like wow. i would have made the decision. That was so yes. You did this kind of what it feels like like. Yeah it's that is baltic to break into an office building like of your competitor of your rivals to like you know angle. The win your way is ballsy but also so stupid so stupid so stupid. Yes so very excitingly. We're obviously talking about watergate because the actual break in and this month in the month of june saw what. Better time to celebrate bad than today in this in this episode Also say a great companion episode to this episode would be our episode on the united states versus nixon. The am the nixon tapes. Homeboy wouldn't stop recording himself One of my favorite supreme court cases. We've covered again bananas that got to the supreme court so no spoilers on that but though in listen after you listen to this episode But before we jump in to talk about today's harsha in sar sus see. Today's censure ronin sources most of this is coming from the senate. Oh my god we love the senate the senate history dot com man of course strum always always good with the with the synopsis of world events. And then a little episode some of it from a site called watergate dot info obsess. Yeah i it's a site dedicated to this event. So you get a website when you when you break again to the democratic national committee like you get you get a website site. Yeah get a website. Yeah okay so before we jump into like the break in. Because i know that's what everybody wants to hear about right now. Let's just let me give you the overview of what watergate is all about if this is your first time hearing about watergate or if you never really got a got the intel on what this whole kerfuffle you could say was about so this is coming from the senate early on the morning of june seventeenth nineteen seventy two five men broke into the democratic national committee headquarters at the watergate hotel and office complex in washington. Dc men that so many like that's not stealth undercover break in that. Is you don't need five men to do anything. No everybody's rule like you. This is a two person..

"Hey, everyone. Welcome to let's get civic. All this is the podcast where he breakdown politics government structure in dive into the context of current events. But in a super fun way, I'm Lizzy Stewart, comedian feminist and political junkie, and I'm Arden house g-, former Senate, intern campaign staffer and political strategist, and this sewed we're going to be tackling congress one oh one so grab your seventh grade textbook, and let's get civil. Hello, everybody. Wanted. All welcome. Welcome. We're here we're back. It's may and it's you and it's all of us together together. Again, I'm Lizzy Stewart, and I'm Arden Wallin hausky. And today we're going to be talking about congress the Senate versus the house of reps. We're going to unpack it we're gonna figure out who's doing what win wear in why? And it's going to be literally so much fun. I'm beaming. She could not contain literally can't contain it. Don't try to contain me. I'm not a container. So we're gonna dive right into. Congress and the house of representatives heard event earn so the house of representatives. We know it, you know, we've heard of it. There's a lot happening about it right now in the news with the current like people that are in power, the Democrats just took it over. So it's hot topic app. But like what are the powers? I will tell you. They are. So the powers of the house of representatives. They initiate all revenue bills. Now, this is a hot topic. Because this is like these are like budgets, right? This why we were shut down. You know, we I mean the house was doing its job at the Senate wasn't this is busily why they call these day. Like, the house has the power of the purse, they control all of the money the money stuff. So you're totally right. Like budgets, right? Yep. Power of the purse. What can I say the P P the bait and they initiate as we've talked about before impeachment charges. So if if the moment ever comes it's gonna start in the house and somebody's going to say I declared impeachment. That's probably not the verbiage that they would use. But I think that would be super cute. And then like we've also talked about if there's a tie in the electoral college, the house of representatives is the body that votes for the president. Yep. They're like, you know, what we're gonna choose. And it's going to be maybe not the person who got the popular vote which we've seen happen before. You know what that's our Bauer. That's power. So those are like the big powers that they have the requirements for both the house and Senate are super interesting to me. And when we talk about both of them, I want like unpack it more, but the requirements to be a Representative in the house used to be at least twenty five years old, which I run. They can do it. Old a US citizen for at least seven years, and you must inhabit the state that he she they represent like, I this is the one time where I I'm so glad that they put it in writing like that. They're the they thought. Okay. You know, what we should actually make it very clear that in order to represent Georgia. You have to live in Georgia because our country would have left. This bullshit, very vague that would've that's their pattern of behavior. I'm real proud proud. But they wrote. Very clear what you had to do. But why do you think twenty five years, and why do you think you have to be US citizen early seven? I think twenty five is probably like their forty back. Then right. It's true. Adelaide five you haven't died. Yeah. Civilised dysentery. You know, you didn't get shot or a log didn't fall on us. So I feel like that. Like now seems super young to me like totally vote for you. Of course, you it is. I mean, yes. And the seven years thing, I think also that sounds like somebody was the one group of people was like what about three no threes long enough three isn't long. What about five? Comfortable to to live. Right. We're we're only live to be thirty six. Right. We gotta get our tire get going. Right. So I feel like that's where that came from. I have no there's no factual basis..

We went back and listen to the old one. And we were like the we have to cut this down to like, fifteen minutes. No way. There's only bowl left. Yeah. Are you ready for this? I need to know so much about it. Okay. I just I just was at the DMV, and I registered to vote in New York finally been absentee for the past decade for Oregon. Yep. It was a mail in ballot. Anyway, they're all manly super easy to just the absentee and. Yeah. Yeah. No Sunday here. And they're like, all right. So I just did that until my driver's license was like you need a new one of me. But I just registered to vote, and I was looking at all the parties, and they're like there's so many the women's women's quality party. I was like shit. I didn't even know about that. Like should. I check it. Like, I don't even what am I doing? I need to know everything. Okay. Great. We're going back in like seventeen ninety two right? Way back and actually sheen political party. Yep. Back in the day set us up where are we? Historian residents or were in seventeen ninety two. And clearly, none of us are at the table. Where are on home wrong wearing like five layers of skirts, and it is always damp at the bottom? With like, yes. Eight children poli, Pat or Brown at UT is that we know where thing we know burned all wave. That was the norm that was normal yesterday named George George Martha with a junior, the only thing I think of when I think of colonial is Virginia. And I just want to apologize to the other states. That were also there the other twelve could not Virginia where more than for chin. There's that's Sochi. They try dates, right? And just like wanna be Virginia's in my opinion yet. So we're starting their seventeen ninety two to eighteen twenty four. Okay. So you've got the federalists. Yes. And the anti federalists it's very what I love about them. Is that it's actually it's very simple. Okay. Tell the health that issue between basically, we're after it were post revolutionary war. Right yet happened in the cool. It sign we won.
