Trump Critic Liz Cheney Cautions Jan. 6 Riot Could Happen Again
"Liz Cheney criticized Republican lawmakers for downplaying the January 6th attack on the Capitol. Cheney says that claims from President Trump That the 2000 to 20 election was stolen are a threat to American democracy. Once January six happened, that that's the end. And that has been, I think the most disappointing thing to me. That more of my colleagues have not been willing to stand up and say that could never happen again. Janey spoke on ABC this week, which can be heard Sundays on Bloomberg. Congressional Republicans voted Friday to replace Cheney with Trump loyalists Congresswoman Elise Stefanik of New York as House Republican Conference chair. It has been more than
Liz Cheney ‘Wouldn’t Be Surprised' if McCarthy Was Subpoenaed by Jan. 6 Commission
"She wouldn't be surprised if House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy is subpoenaed by the commission investigating the U. S. Capitol riots very clearly and said publicly that he's got information about the president's state of mind that day. That's where maybe sees this week McCarthy lead the effort to Al Cheney from her leadership role a bill forming a bipartisan commission. Looking into the riot could hit the House floor this week. Michigan Republican Congressman Fred Upton
Liz Cheney Drama Is Not Significant for Everyday Americans Despite the Media Hype
"A critical of Mr Trump and publicly supportive of Liz Cheney and Dan Crunch of Texas, who says he's neither a trump loyalist. Or an anti trump, er and I'm gonna begin with Congressman Crenshaw. Congressman Welcome to meet the press on Let me just start with whether you agree with the following analysis, which is This. Cheyney was kicked out of leadership simply because she wouldn't carry the water of former President Trump's election lies. Do you agree with that statement? No. Fundamentally, I don't look Thanks for having me on. I was a little surprised because I've been so detached from this drama, and it is drama over the past month. But I have followed it. And look, you can't forget that We already had this vote for Liz Cheney. We had this vote in that vote was directly because of her vote for impeachment, and she won overwhelmingly Republican Conference said. Look, we disagree and listed, not apologize, and she said she would not apologize. And she still won that vote overwhelmingly to be a leader in our conference. You can't forget that you can't cross over that fact. What happened after that? I think the reason that a lot of our colleagues got got more frustrated with her is because effectively, she kept demanding that everybody else start apologizing. So she refuses to apologize. Which is fine. I don't think she should. Then she demands everybody else does. And I think what Kevin McCarthy was trying to say there was. Look, there is disagreement, and it's time to move on. We can. We can keep having that fight if we'd like. But what is the point? What is the outcome? When in reality, we need to be talking about the things that American people actually care about. I got to tell you. This is not the subject that I'm asked about. I get asked a lot of questions, always doing events was meeting with people. I never get asked about this. I get us about buys the rising inflation. Why is there a border crisis? What is going on in the Middle East? Why can't we get gas? What is happening to our energy infrastructure? Why can't I hire people where they're getting paid by the government to stay at home instead of come to work. These are things that really affect people, not this internal drama. And one of the reasons I agreed to come on your show is basically to say that this isn't that important to people well, but why should anybody believe a word you say if the Republican Party itself doesn't have credibility I'm

I will do everything i can. To ensure that the former president never again get anywhere near the oval office. We have seen the danger that he continues to provoke with his language. It claims that damascus serious capital is safe enough for the refugees to return. Denmark is reviewing the cases of hundreds of people to whom it previously granted protected status. This is a fairly extreme position for the danish government to take margaret diva. Right about forty fast. The economist for years series of had their refugee cases accepted almost automatically in many parts of the world and denmark is now the only country in europe to rescind refugee status like this for people from syria. Going to surprise a lot of people to learn the damascus is considered safe. Is that really the case. Well the syrian government is now in control of damascus. So that part of the country hasn't seen active fighting for about three years so one could argue that. Damascus is safer perhaps from the civil war than other parts of the country. That said the ngo human rights watch says. That syrians who go back could face torture or detention. The regime of bishara l. Aside might see the fact that they fled the war as a sign of disloyalty and on top of that parts of damascus are still completely destroyed from previous fighting and so some of these refugees might be told that they need to return to a home. That doesn't exist anymore. So given all of that. The risk of persecution the potential loss of their homes. Can the refugees remain in denmark on those grounds so unfortunately no. They're basically two ways to get refugee status in denmark. The first is because someone faces individual persecution because of who they are for example their religion or their political views now the threshold of sending someone back who faces individual. Persecution is quite high. The other way to get refugee. Status in denmark is to show that you're fleeing indiscriminate violence now the threshold for sending those people back much lower so this second group is a group whose cases are being reviewed if denmark concludes that there is no longer a war in the damascus area. Then in theory these people's claim to protection no longer exists. And i should note here. That denmark has admitted thousands of syrian refugees and this review only applies to at this point about a thousand of them so a small minority. Has anyone actually been sent back just yet since two thousand nine thousand nine. The danish government has taken away residency permits for more than two hundred people and this includes about one hundred just in two thousand twenty one alone now. There is an appeals process and the appeals board. So far has sided with refugees. Some of the time. The problem for denmark is that they can't actually send syrians back right now. Denmark in syria don't have diplomatic relations so denmark can't arrange for a flight for people back to damascus refugees who lose their permission to stand. Denmark are basically left with two options. One option is they could be held in an immigration detention center The other option is they could leave and they could either try to go to another european country and try to claim asylum there or they could end up going back to syria. Margaret people think of denmark and other kinds of navy and governments. They possibly think of left-wing immigration friendly governments. Is that not the case in denmark these days the current government and denmark has been in power since twenty nineteen and is taking a harder line perhaps than an outsider would expect on immigration in general so the ruling party is a left-wing party the social democrats. And they've actually come out with a policy saying that they want a cap on the number of what they call non western immigrants in the country and in fact january. The prime minister said that she had a goal of having no asylum seekers in denmark. What typically happened is refugees that were fleeing something like a civil war. The usually ended up staying in denmark or other european countries long enough that they could go through the channels to apply for permanent residency. So even if circumstances changed back at home. They ended up staying in the country that they moved to. What's seems to be changing in denmark. Is that denmark is vigorously reviewing the status of these people with this temporary residents in the country with what appears to be the goal of sending more of them home. And what is it. That's driving this hotline position. The government argues that these non western immigrants struggled to find jobs or they don't integrate well into denmark and so what denmark should do instead is support for an aid programs that help people closer to where they are some commentators. Say this is pressure on the ruling party from the far right. Danish people's party so the social democrats are leading the governing coalition. They're competing with further right parties for working class voters. Now the social democrats deny that and they say that this is just sensible immigration policy. This is not about politics. And i should add that. There has been domestic resistance to this plan. There is a protest outside of the danish parliament last month for example where people in denmark made it clear that this was not what all of them wanted. Could this be a sign of things to come in europe. more broadly. so it's too early to know if other european countries are gonna follow denmark's lead but it's safe to say that many of them are watching to see what happens. Sweden for example is no longer automatically accepting syrian refugees. And the reason why they're saying is that there is improved security in the damascus area. And i think one of the really concerning things is it. The vast majority of the refugees from syria or not in europe at all they're in neighboring countries like jordan and lebanon and turkey and those countries that.

"Was responsible for the insurrection. The capital remaining silent and ignoring the lie emboldens the liar. I will not participate in that. I will not sit back and watch in silence while others lead our party down a path that abandons the rule of law and joins the former presidents hussein physician control the ire of trump. Who has attacked repeatedly. And we gotta get rid of the week. Congress people the ones that aren't any good. The liz cheney's of the world. We gotta get of the removal shows. Just how enduring mr trump's grip on the republican party is with worrying implications for the health of the two party system she's committed. What's become heresy in the republican party. It's not about policy. It's not about ideology. James bennett is a visiting senior editor at the economist. What she did was she insisted that. Donald trump actually lost the twenty twenty election which of course in fact did and as a result donald trump has singled her out repeatedly essentially demanded her head and yesterday the republicans gave it to james. Donald trump has been gone for five months. This is history. Why has she been ousted now. Showing donald trump is not gone is a little bit less local than it used to be. E dominates the airwaves to a lesser extent. He's been banned from the big social platforms but he still retains tremendous control republican party. This was somewhat in question. After the january six insurrection. Kevin mccarthy minority leader in the house of representatives stood behind liz. Cheney originally republican party is a very big tent. everyone's invited in and she survived a vote in the caucus pretty easily back in february. But last week. He said he'd had it with her and he supported for removal yesterday. He is gotten impatient with her for insisting on the truth. Liz cheney's view as they can't move on as a party and in fact they can't serve american democracy if they continue to undermine the electoral system. Kevin mccarthy just doesn't want to have that conversation he wants to keep donald trump happy and make sure that donald trump will put his shoulder to the wheel in electing republicans and twenty twenty two for all these reasons. He's just trying to essentially shut. Liz cheney up who is replacing miss cheney. And what does that. Tell us about the direction of the party most likely she will be replaced by a congresswoman from new york named least panic to found is actually by republican standards of moderate unlike liz cheney she broke with donald trump on a number of his legislative priorities including his number one legislative achievement. Which was the tax bill. She voted against it but she has one very big thing going for which is that. She has remade herself as a staunch ally of donald trump and she's been zealous in spreading misinformation about the election. So on the one thing that's turning out to really matter among republicans right now which is field to donald trump. You know she scores very high. So what does it say about. Donald trump's enduring level of control over the party that he wants led. Donald trump not only remains the most important figure in the republican party. There's just nobody else who comes remotely close. Who can challenge him right now and so much of what's driving. Shank is simply fear among republican. Legislators don't trump's control over large majority of the base of the party is absolute and a lot of republican congressmen are living in fear of getting challenged in a primary by candidates supported by donald trump. And as a result. They're kind of falling all over each other to assert their own loyalty to him. You know this is something that liz cheney is gonna face now. They're already republicans lining up to challenge her and donald trump has made very clear the taking her out as the representative from wyoming among his top priorities. Where does this leave. The republican party is a political force. Do you think. Joe biden is has put forward the most ambitious legislative agenda. You've seen from a democratic president really since the nineteen sixties and there has been considerable republican opposition but to really hasn't been consistent clear criticism or a clear alternative put forward in part because the republicans are so preoccupied with talking about donald trump. And that's really going to prevent the party from moving forward. They basically have donald trump in the culture wars to define them and that was proved in the last election cycle not to be a winning combination james. A lot of republicans have stood by his cheney. Some are even threatening to split off from the gop to leave the party altogether. Is that any riskier of a split. There is not a real history of successful third parties. In american politics it is. I think unlikely that you'd see a whole new party formed. I think they're more likely to see a struggle inside the republican party in coming years and liz cheney's made very clear. She intends to be a leader of that fight. So if a third party is viable and one of america's major parties is in thrall to its former leader who is a spouting misinformation. Where does that leave the two party system as a whole what you know is a little scary right now about political life in america's that in many ways the two parties are operating with completely different sets of fax and operating in different realities and how you bring politicians of both parties back into conversation where there's an agreement on what the actual terms of debate are is. It's a huge challenge for the society right now given all of that given that situation. Is there anything that can be done to bring the republican party. Back into the fold back into the the realm of Truth in shed. Consensus reality traditionally. When a party goes down wrong path like this when ultimately brings him back to reality is electoral defeat. Because it's in the ashes of real electoral defeat that they begin to ask themselves fundamental questions. And and to rebuild. Donald trump lost only narrowly electoral college last time around though he was soundly defeated nationally. A couple of serious electoral defeats might force the republicans to reckon with whether they are in fact going down the wrong path year. The problem is that again. Historically the party out of power tends to pick up seats during the midterm elections and right now that looks like the probable outcome in twenty twenty two and we may be waiting for a couple more election cycles for the republicans to choose a new path. They've failed to win a majority of the popular vote in a presidential election in five of the last six cycles. And.
Liz Cheney Ousted From Republican Leadership for Challenging Trump Election Claims
"Speaking of not going to convince anybody. Liz Cheney was ousted from leadership within the GOP earlier today, it was a very big studio. Everybody had very, very strong opinions about it. Liz Cheney is is about as pro Trump as a conservative Republican can get. According to the Heritage Foundation. She voted for President Donald Trump, or with President Donald Trump something like 92.9% of the time. It's It's an amazing, amazing figure, but because she decided to come out against him in the most recent impeachment. Now what they're effectively doing as we're going to hear from CBS is this kind of sacrificial killing. They're doing this thing where they're trying to demonstrate to the base. They're trying to show everybody in the Trump base that they really do care. And by doing so, we're going to oust Liz Cheney from GOP leadership for just expressing her opinion as guaranteed to her by the Constitution of the United States. As a representative, we need to get rid of her, regardless. Here is a list Cheney earlier today. Today we face a threat America has never seen before. Ah, former president who provoked a violent attack on this capital in an effort to steal the election, has resumed his aggressive effort to convince Americans that the election was stolen from him. He risks inciting further violence. Millions of Americans have been misled by the former president. Liz Cheney Reacts After Being Ousted From Republican Leadership
"Cheney today was voted out of that leadership job by her republican colleagues in the house seems telling to me that they were so brave they wouldn't even take a roll-call vote on that they did it by voice vote so nobody would have to be on the record in terms of what they did today to throw her out of office. Cheney herself though is still a member of congress in good standing and she each day proves herself well and truly capable of keeping the record straight herself. We have had the conference meeting. I am absolutely committed. As i said last night as i said just now to my colleagues that we must go forward based on truth we cannot both embrace the big lie and embraced the constitution and going forward The nation needs it. "Anything and that being said like i happen to agree with liz. Cheney and everything she said I i part ways with her on on the tactics. There's something else i wanted to talk to you about. When it came to liz cheney. Because i was listening to the sunday shows from this past weekend and just the murmurs among republicans about liz cheney and to me when i listened to it the pushback on liz cheney it reminded me so much of pushback on elizabeth warren. From a few years back like you had chris christie on. Abc saying you know she wouldn't stop talking essentially about january six. Then you know it's gonna be a drag and it sounded so much like nevertheless. She persisted like she just kept talking. And there's this other similarity between cheney and elizabeth warren which is people often say warren's a bad politician which we can agree or disagree about but what's interesting to me is that she staked out these positions that often seemed very outside of where her party was and she was critical of the party itself and she won some contests since she lost some but she ended up pulling her party in a direction that it was not going before she was part of that and made me wonder if that was cheney's play here to do something like that i think in her dreams. Perhaps that's plays to make a real stamp on the party by By pulling it in the anti-trump direction. But i think there is one important station. Which is that. I think it's easy to pull your party You know as a democrat. It's easy to pull your party to the left and as a republican. It's easier to pull your party to the right You're republican trying to pull your party to elect to the center like that. That's that's more challenging. Were looking at intra conference dynamic so within the party like that's more challenging cheney's already got a primary challenger for twenty twenty two right she does and i think the big question is how this will reverberate for her back home and i think there are real doubts about whether she will come out of that primary after losing leadership post. Yeah cheap he by the way Express a lot of confidence that she'll prevail and and i hope she does. I think her message is perfectly fine for a rank and file member of the republican party. I think it's less appropriate for somebody party party leadership. But i think i think cheney's important presence in.

"liz cheney" Discussed on Today, Explained
"Apparently said about to do everything he could to steal it himself and the house republicans. They don't like that she continues to say that. That was bad. Another way of saying this is that the house republicans this week will punish one of their party leaders for telling the truth for telling the truth in a way that they find inconvenient to them some of these republicans justify to themselves by saying that you know this is politics and you want to spotlight your parties. Most favorable message issues that help unite your party and whatever she may believe about the twenty twenty election the fact that she continues to make headlines about per attempt to say what trump did was bad is a problem for republicans in their quest to retake congress in two thousand twenty two. And because of that. They don't want her in leadership. Okay well before we talk about what this means for the gop. Let's just talk about liz. Cheney who was she before this twenty twenty buckle. i imagined. She's related to someone. We might be familiar with yes. Liz cheney is a daughter of former vice president. Dick cheney president dick. Cheney has accidentally shot and injured a friend with whom he was hunting on a ranch in south. Texas whittington is in the hospital right now after mr chaney sprayed him with shotgun pellets while trying to hit a quail. She only joined congress pretty recently. She was first elected in two thousand sixteen and she is the sole member of the us house of representatives from wyoming and despite just joining congress in two thousand seventeen she already had this meteoric rise to become the number three republican in house leadership in early twenty nineteen and she's been talked about as someone who has quite a political future in the republican party. She's been discussed as a potential speaker of the house. She's been discussed as a potential. Us senator even a potential presidential candidate. She is very conservative. Views seem to have good credentials with the party. Hurt career seemed to headed in the right direction until she started to butt heads with one donald trump and when exactly does she started to butt heads with one donald trump. I mean she was in office for four years while he was president. And it seems like we're only really hearing a lot better now that he's not so her initial disputes with trump did surface in twenty twenty or. So she's very much of the cheney wing of the republican party when it comes to foreign policy. She's she supports. Us intervention abroad so when donald trump was trying to withdraw troops from various conflicts overseas. She made clear that she was opposed to that. I am deeply deeply concerned and i oppose a strongly. The president's decision Apparently to withdraw troops from syria The apparent decision that we're now going to be looking at withdrawing troops from afghanistan. These two decisions would be disastrous so there were already tensions before the twenty twenty election but after it is when things really got serious when trump started to lay the groundwork for overturning the election when he started making these claims of voter fraud that had absolutely no basis in fact she spoke out and she said that it's important to respect our system to preserve our democratic system and she continued to say that as december stretched into january is more illegal for you than it is for them. Because you know what they did and you're not reporting it that's just. You is especially bothered by the leaking of an audio of the phone. Call in which trump had called georgia's secretary of state. Brad referenced burger and urged him to find the votes that would flip the state of georgia from biden into trump fellas. I need eleven thousand votes. Give me a break. We have that is spades already and so there was discussion in early. January as trump's allies were preparing a challenge in congress and liz. Cheney wrote a twenty one page memo in early january to her colleagues saying there's no basis for refusing to respect the election results for saying it was set a terrible precedent for congress to throw out certified state results and basically that. This is a very bad idea. And so all of this happened before the events of january six itself when trump gave a speech egging on his supporters and in fact he mentioned liz cheney by name and we got get rid of the week congress people the ones that aren't any good the list of the world we gotta get rid of them and his supporters headed on over to the capitol and stored in and that whole disturbing scene unfolded. The single greatest threat to our republic is a president who would put his own self interest above the constitution above the national interest. Shady was was very angry about that. What happens after the insurrection on january. Sixth what happens is that democrats start launching this effort to impeach donald trump for a second time and in a bit of a surprising move liz. Cheney decided that she would support this effort a pretty remarkable thing for the number three republican in leadership releasing a statement that says in part the president of the united states summoned. This mob assembled this mob and lit the flame of this attack. everything that followed was his doing. None of this would have happened without the president. The president could have immediately and forcefully intervened to stop the violence. He did not. There has never been a greater betrayal by president of the united states at his office and his oath to the constitution. I will vote to impeach the president and so you know. This isn't just you know. Sadly reluctantly democrats are bad too. But i will sadly vote to impeach. Donald trump betrayed his office more than any other president in history. And that is why he must go. And she voted that way she was one of ten republicans in the house to vote that way and the number three house republican congresswoman. Liz cheney's facing a backlash from her. Gop colleagues some of them almost immediately. Some of our conservative colleagues began calling for her removal. Not just that some of her colleagues make a trip to her home state right you. This is first time in wyoming. Yes Our friend of the show representative matt gaetz of florida decided to fly to wyoming and Pulled an event. There had never been to the state before any as i go already. I know that everyone here is fed up with liz cheney because you know she so bad she she hates donald trump so much so there is this effort to purge her from the leadership but when the vote is held in early february it fails. This is a closed door. Vote and a secret ballot. Vote so we don't know how anyone voted but the final outcome was sixty one votes to remove cheney and one hundred forty five votes to keep her in the job so even though a lot of the house. Republicans were publicly behind trump and saying their problems with the election. It seems that secretly. They had a bit more sympathy for liz cheney and what she was saying and doing than they were willing to make clear publicly. They were happy to keep her in the job. Then sounds like that changes. What happened since then when she still had the support of her colleagues so the problem was basically that she just kept on being the skunk at the garden party. She kept on mentioning this thing. That happened that. Donald trump tried to overturn a democratic election results. She thought that was bad and she kept mentioning. That was bad and Things really came to ahead in late april during the house. Gop's policy retreat to orlando florida. So basically the republicans all gathered for this big event. They're going to raise money. They wanted to put forward a good message for the party. I think as we look at twenty two and twenty four We're very much going to be focused on substance on the issues. And i think that's where we've gotta check back the voters that we lost in two thousand twenty liz. Cheney started talking to reporters and she opined that who supported trump's effort not to certify the two thousand twenty election result isn't fit to be the party's presidential nominee in two thousand twenty four And republicans start to get annoyed by this one. Political report said that many in the party buzzing about cheney viewing her as quote an unwelcome distraction from the party's message so then president. Joe biden gave his address to a joint session of congress a few days after the policy retreat and cheney gave biden a fist bump there. Oh yeah yeah fist-bump with the current president of the united states this week even leading cheney to tweet were not sworn enemies we're americans some republicans thought that was bad for and then monday of last week trump issued a statement saying the fraudulent presidential election of twenty twenty should be known as the big law so then cheney shot back on twitter. The twenty twenty presidential election was not stolen anyone who claims it was is spreading the big lie in all turning their back on the rule of law and poisoning our democratic system. And that seems to be really. What was the tipping point. House minority leader. Kevin mccarthy said on fox news. He's been.

"It turns out. It was the hungarian scientists who came up with the idea of basically programming rene and the people who actually hold the patent on the pfizer by attack vaccine are two turkish migrants to germany. And at this very moment separately because of all of this works cooperatively and largely government funded. Just the nih. 'cause the nih holds key patents that both the pfizer vaccine but also moderna us but also the eu is funded but all around the world and a lot of developing countries. The reason why the really is the capacity to make a vaccine all over. There's been research an rene vaccines an how other health cancer hiv aids applications. So this is a breakthrough that super exciting in your rights. It's amazing how quick it was done. Be- know why it was so quick because it was thirty years of research government funded that goddess this point from an idea from a hungarian person in one thousand nine hundred so thank god we had when we needed it but it is not a you asked technology per se even though the us and us geniuses had a huge part of it but so do people all around the world so it seems a very justify without being komo. Benefit given scientists around the world created this and governments and we as taxpayers helped fund those innovations. I feel like. I'm learning a great deal from talking to you. So thank you. I one thing. I did want to touch on before we let go and thank you for your time is. Bill gates helped spearhead kovacs. It's with the w. h. o. Their goal is to develop industry two billion doses to the world's poorest countries where the editor twenty twenty one. You point out in your piece. They delivered about thirty eight million to one hundred countries as the us is hitting three million doses a day. What happened in the kovacs program in what what role did the pharmaceutical companies play in slowing it down. Send the shortcomings of the kovacs program which you know had a relatively modest goal. It only sought to be able to deliver vaccine for twenty percent the most at risk populations so the elderly healthcare workers in developing countries. So it was never even the program for heard immunity. It was the first tier. Was the one eight in one be tiers of vaccines and the problem is related to the problem. That's plaguing the entire world right now. Which is there just isn't supply so that now has money including more money from the biden administration as part of the excellent job. Over the course of the past the greatest thing is like he survived the car crash but he was driving a car like recently and got into a car accident and still survive like this dude was having on the best. The drina chrome. I don't know what these rich people are. Don't how survived that long. Got so much adrina crumb too much time for you with those cunanan rallies. Hell you know absolutely on monday. Bill and melinda gates announced that there would be divorcing. They sat down with the bill and melinda gates foundation and made it clear that it wasn't their fault that even though they don't love each other they still love the foundation the same amount and the vendors to fucking christmas bitches. This is awesome. I'm excited melinda. Hit me up you know. I'm i'm single ready to mingle. Mackenzie bezos bazo. You can you can hit my line to you. I don't know how open it was for mackenzie there. But i'm just looking forward to their divorce that arc's let's see how much of how how how closely they resemble peter the'll by the end of this year when they're like victims of family court which is a number one republican aggregated. So let's listen to the clip. Friendship leaving california actually. What my the guy across referee was packing up his hang artists. Where are you going. And he says. I'm moving to sedona arizona. Can't take it anymore. Yeah that his eyeballs was enough. Get much much famously. No homeless people in arizona. So that's also good i. It is a big problem. It is certainly a big problem Luckily i will be voting for jennifer governor of course so very excited to see what her proposals are to combat The homelessness crisis that is facing everywhere around the country. I don't know why because they because he's famous and they've all heard of them. That's why says they need to be more complicated also. The joe rogan received backlash for comments about the vaccine and he kind of walked back sort of he sort of walked back and he said he's not any vaccine encourages many people to get them But just to be safe. Pfizer is rolling out a shot aimed at his core audience and it is called back. Spotty spray it's okay. it's okay. it's pretty good. This is right bodies. Listen i'm a. I watched joe rogan. Okay i'm a big fan of joe. Rogan hung out with him one time like many years ago before he like went down. The the sam harris jordan peterson rabbit hole and became like this weird reactionary guy. He's just a guy who's having a conversation who doesn't really know too much and will like willingly admit he doesn't really know too much with the problem is like he has millions of stands right like k. Pop stands basically except they're not fourteen year old girls. They're like thirty five year old adults living in iowa that now you know go and do brazilian jujitsu. Those people hanging on every word of another guy who's like self admittedly is an ape and he literally is is really weird. It's very very weird Situation there's this thing of like. I'm just a guy i'm just having conversations and like that is something that i think. A lot of people who reach a lot of people will fall back you. Sometimes i remember even like jon stewart. When he was when he got that you know that famous carlson one of his defenses. And i think fairly. I'm not saying it's wrong. it's like. I'm a comedian. Euro series person. Right you're supposed to be an expert. I'm just making dumb jokes. Like i come after a puppet show But with like joe rogan. It's like he's.

"It's your bashes your outlet for completely unregulated misinformation. I liked it sometimes. Goes you know dan. Bongino ben shapiro. Dan bongino dan bongino straight news story from c. n. n. about some sort of f. b. i. raid and you realize that that's because people think it's about q. And then it goes like it goes. Dan bongino dan bongino dbongino. I never really thought that it would get to a point where i would think to myself. Like ham fox news is like actually better overall than this like a propaganda lucrative for the republican party which is responsible for so much of that misinformation running rampant on facebook. But even then in comparison to what you see on facebook. It's like well. At least they're not saying that there are space lasers and or fires are being caused by. That fox. News is horrible. Facebook is just as horrible plus some stuff. That isn't even allowed on fox news. Which is why like all the surveys come out. And like who's the most hesitant to get the vaccine. Obviously it's fox news listeners but even worse or people who just get their news from conservative social media like that is even fucking worse. The people that were like fox news. Not good enough for me. I'm moving. I'm moving my talents. The facebook only and newsmax newsmax. They'd finally finally. There's a conservative option. But you still cry about it. Like yeah and they were crying about this board. They were crying. The decision of this board on facebook on fox news. And i was thinking like what you're upset but this board is literally helping you like this board once again is basically saying like you can't indefinitely suspend someone without giving a reason so the the board technically you still on the side of the conservatives at least creating a more fair process right and they're still complaining about it it's also silly because like the board is like oh you didn't fill out the proper paperwork to stop global information's so we got to kick this back. This has to go right back you have to. Now you're in you filled out form c. To stop a coup but you actually need form jay head back to the back of the line. Do this whole thing again. No liberalism on steroids in a weird way. In the meantime trump has launched a website. Where only can post have you seen the trump blog. I have not yet i. Unfortunately trump is very visual medium for me so when he's not like personally they're like i need to see his body. I need to see the spacey occupies to be able to fully. So when he's not there it's just like writing stuff. It's like kinda wack for me so i don't really look at it but no it's basically his own little blog where you can actually click a little heart to like it. But there's no counting. I think it just lights up on your screen. It just makes it a little lit up heart next to it. And i think it's fine for trump to have a blog but i do think it's kind of bullshit. They have to scroll through like ten paragraphs a personal grievances before you get to the actual brownie recipe. He's doing a substitute as as crazy. I mean i listen. Glenn greenwald mad tv. And now donald trump he saw that sub stack was popping off. And he's like. I need to be a part of this rate you know. Trump is is the barry weiss of mar-a-lago a lot of ways..

"Count right i mean. There's like making the lines longer at the polls which is bad but familiar and then there's changing who and what kind of bodies have power over that. The count happens in an orderly fashion as it absolutely did in every state in twenty twenty. I mean we were really flirting with the kind of breakdown in the actual integrity of the election that we worried about in the last election and that is shocking to me like it makes me feel like i've sort of been lulled to sleep in the last few months by the seeming normalcy of the american government in the hands of joe biden. But actually there's all the stuff going on underneath and it's really bad for democracy. So i would just add to that both the past and the future which is before january six which is important enough but before january sixth the epistemological crisis that it highlights. The difference between reality and fiction was at the center of the failed administration response to covid nineteen. It was a refusal to face up to the reality that the administration was facing and it continued misinformation of the public when the president knew better that contributed to the poor response for covid nineteen so there's a linkage there between those two things and then in the future how do you make laws. When when an alternate reality is so firm and so fixed and such and operates with such dominion over a party. How do you debate policy when argumentation can just be made up and mountains of facts are impervious to that partisan shell you. Don't it's gone. I mean that's you pass delusion based laws like these voting restrictions when you control all the apparatus of government in particular state. I want to linger on elise stefanik for a second. Because i don't know if you guys remember but amanda ripley came. Frequent gaffe as guests came on maybe a year. Two years ago to talk about she did about that tanu town in new york. It was a town new york which which like where people got along. It was sort of like. Here's a place where people still manage to get along. And that's at least two phonics district and it. She is the story of that which is that. She was a moderate republican. Paul ryan staffer in a district. That was sort of swung back and forth. That district has now become extremely conservative in a very short time. The issues that that were sort of quiet or or sidelined have become front and center simmering boiling culture war issues and that the the piece the peacefulness and the agreeable nece and the kind of get along with about district. I think probably has subsided. In the way that you'd expect it has everywhere else and it's it's just kind of tragic tragic. Where do you guys think that that mitt romney goes now. I mean mitt mitt. Romney like i know. Liz cheney lynne cheney you know belief system or not mine her where she stands on issues not mind. Liz cheney's is incredibly brave right now. It is not easy to do what she's doing. And it is not easy to do at mitt romney doing and i wish there was some way that they could find a home somewhere. They start a third party or just become independence like angus king. And may i mean. I was really struck by that watching the booing of mitt romney. I was thinking about how i would feel hundreds of people who were my people. Were booing me and i was like standing up for this principle. That takes me away from all the things i normally like. What mitt romney wanted to do was get up there and criticize joe biden. Said he did not want to get up there and like have a fight with his own supporters. that's that is no fun and it is a huge disincentive for anyone to join him. Because you're paying this price in personal humiliation and discomfort. I you know just a phonics. District is interesting. Because i think it was only plus four republican which means on a knife edge. Obama wanted by quite a lot and then trump won it. But what's interesting is whether it becomes whether you can make the case that it's a microcosm for the party right now in other words obama then trump and then kind of stuck on the trump path going back to your point david about i mean at least phonic was the one that if you if you talk to republican leaders and said gee donald trump is doing all these things that seem to be turning off suburban women and angering democrats say at least two phonic. In other words they'd say younger and female in other words parties defined by her and not by donald trump. And it's been amazing to see her. Harvard removed her from her advisory position. Or whatever it was in the school of politics because her statements about the twenty twenty election were lies. I mean they removed her because of that. So i mean that's that's quite a distance one travels when you are sort of a republican sufficiently liberal to make it onto harvard's anything and then having to be removed for it so it's it'll be fascinating if she gets into leadership. I mean on a granular level. Like my tiny window into misinformation and it's entrenchment among ordinary voters my window into suburban connecticut. It is like really entrenched. I mean people just believe what they believe at this point about the election about covid it it can be a hundred and fifty percent wrong whatever multiple you want use and like. It's really hard to unstick it. There's a really good. This american life segment from a week. Or two ago with frank luntz doing a focus group of people who he was trying to get to open their minds to getting vaccinated and it gets at some of this like just how how hard it is to change people's minds right now you are. You're one hundred percent right. I just hadn't experienced a series of experiences where that was proved indelibly although our friend of the show dan diamond of the washington post. Who wrote about the luntz focus group semi note and said that eight of the nineteen focus group participants who were hesitant in mid march have since gotten vaccinated or scheduled to so his point. Was that you minds can change. If the information gets to people in in the right way and heartening it is right but like deliberative polling getting the information. They're the right way. Is is a massive long-term careful methodical patient. Like you gotta do a lot just to get a couple of people to change their minds. That's difficult to do in the current environment. Yeah and if you think about you know tucker carlson who's to spewing the most dangerous destructive lies to millions and millions of these people every night that's that's a lot louder and a lot more effective than one tiny focus group. I mean those are probably the only those people the only eight people in the thousands and thousands and thousands of them that have gotten vaccinated. I would fear you guys see that stat. That like something like thirty. Five percent of police officers have gotten vaccinated. It's just the military's under thirty percent. I think this leads me back to the reconciliation which you know. The parliament parliamentarian in the senate has has affirmed the idea. The democrats can pass more than one bill through reconciliation. I'm sort of alighting some of the complexity there. But but yeah i thought it was gonna talk about like the national reconciliation like we were. The you had a path forward to a national reconciliation chewed on recognization. Had we probably will you know. That's one of the things for a. That's one of the things let's cheney is calling for is basically a Is a commission to look at what happened on the sixth of january but in terms of reconciliation in the senate..

"Gabfest from may six twenty twenty one martyrdom liz cheney addition. I'm david plots of city. Cast here in washington dc Where when i look out my window i see liz. Cheney being dragged down the street. I am joined by emily. Baz lan of new york times magazine and yale university law school from new haven. Hello emily and john dickerson of. Cbs is sixty. Minutes is right now. John dickerson of cbs's face the nation. Because he's doing a season long stint hosting face the nation. Hello john that's right. Hello david so watch face the nation again now. The john's back on it. It's been two weeks and i can't. It's it's so strange to think that i did that. Show for two and a half years. I don't know it's a very. It's so weird it's it's it's It both feels trademark eloquence from john dickerson familiar. And also i guess because it's a new studio that was that wasn't terribly eloquent. Put there we go. Ratings are definitely up. Though with the coming defenestration of cheney the transformation of the republican party into a delusional anti-democratic trump is conspiracy is complete. That will be a first topic our second topic. The facebook supreme court has spoken and donald trump still cannot be on that social platform. What a lucky duck. I wish i couldn't be on facebook. That would be great. You can't you can take yourself off good grief. That's true that's true. It was a joke. Emily then too literal for joklik. Can't handle it then. America's that meat wars are. We headed for meatless world meatless country. Will it be just another culture war that we have to fight. Plus we'll have cocktail chatter wolf. If such a funny story you saw former justice briar totally botched his stint guest hosting jeopardy this week he was supposed to it for weak and they pulled them after just one day because he just failed to understand but on jeopardy he gives the answers and the contestants asked the questions he kept trying to turn the answers on the board questions like it was the court hearing. It was crazy. Brier says that after a lifetime of asking questions from the bench. He was perplexed by the jeopardy format and that he hopes to be a judge on american idol instead. This of course did not happen because he is still. He's still still on the court still there and eat brier retirement news this week. Emily no. I thought you were going to say that. That facebook in an effort to improve its relations with mankind had opened up a seat on the facebook supreme court for justice briar. So that i thought about doing that but that seemed like the easy the play. Yeah well the jeopardy jeopardy route was was. well we're epinay was good. So david kimberley robinson took a look at the craziest hypotheticals. That steven briar has used in asking questions from the bench in the last three decades. So you can use that as your fodder for next week if you choose. Oh i'd love to see it liz. Cheney the house republican from wyoming herself the daughter of a very conservative vice president of the united states will be dethroned as the republican conference chair. Most likely very soon mitt romney the two thousand twelve republican nominee for president was lustily booed and nearly censured by the republicans in his home state of utah. Romney and cheney are of course apostates now the republican party that requires not merely loyalty to former president trump but fealty to delusion that the twenty twenty election was stolen. This party which has been headed in a dangerous direction for years is now fundamentally anti-democratic dishonest and incredibly threatening to the very country. We live in the government. We the principles by which we have been governed so john. Let's start with cheney for a minute. Why is the republican party. Likely to dethrone cheney from her leadership position. They don't like to be reminded of the fact that they are and have been trying to distance themselves from the sixth of january and kiss up to to donald trump. I know that people are sick of this but ever since the election i've been talking about this market that donald trump created that market is in full and roaring operation and donald trump doesn't necessarily have to even as i. I think this is still true in part because i've been saying Confirmation bias. he doesn't even have to have a very good website. He doesn't have to have a very good anything. The market still exists because seventy percent of the republican party think the election was stolen through fraud and that joe biden is not the rifle president. And that's the second part of why this is important so lose. Cheney is an embarrassment to those people who kevin mccarthy in particular who blamed donald trump for the insurrection and now in extraordinary reversal. The thing that he cites is the statement that facebook used to ban him from the platform in which he says we should. You should remember this day. Forever calls the rioters patriots. Says we love you. All and that was the comment for which trump was suspended from facebook for supporting violence. And also by the way. It's sort of amusing because as liz. Cheney is saying remember this day forever and many republicans are saying move on. Donald trump was the ones who said you should remember this day forever. Obviously for different reasons but the second important thing is when you're a leader and john bainer writes about this in his book as he says a leader with no followers is just taking a walk. Loose cheney is out of step with people she's trying to lead and they are listening to the voices of the voters who believe that the big lie is true and that the six january was not that big a deal..

"Trump. but but. I don't know if i buy that. I'm not convinced that there were not people who came away from that meaning knowing that in future meetings they're gonna show up again and they're going to do the lake antifa cough again and that they're not just going to back down. Yeah i actually really agree with that kind of conclusion. Because joe heard is really not exactly what i heard. Here's the other interesting part of this. Which is that later on in our conversation. Joe kind of told me the ways in which the party has really changed in the last four years like i think permanently changed nowadays because there has been just harsh rhetoric and vitriol and not necessarily the antique cough but like actual threats made against party officials on social media So over the years as i mentioned the rhetoric increase sneak in this increased The attorney in comments on social media have general has been the target of you. I know a media all the time And it has changed the face of the neutron accounting. Republicans that our own meetings. We now have security for years ago. If someone said that last they actually had to hire an armed security guard in addition to their sergeant at arms. To preside over these meetings. Oh my gosh. They say they notify the local police department. Now time they have these meetings because you know what. Joe saddest better safe than sorry. So i don't know like that very small victory for joe for what he believes is Victory of decency in respectfulness. I don't. I don't know if i see it. And i think that especially you know given the security changes given the vitriol directed at them and continues to be directed at them. They might not want to acknowledge that the party has changed because of the last four years because of trump because of the political climate that led to trump. They might think that they have the ability to just kind of move on and brush it off in that the tension dissipates after that brief flare up of anger. But i am not convinced that the party itself hasn't just changed permanently and maybe one of the political victims of that will be people like liz cheney..

"Liz. Cheney does have supporters. she's got allies in congress. Senate minority leader mitch. Mcconnell came out in defense of her last week. He called cheney quote a leader with deep convictions and the courage to act on them in wyoming also has people that back her ones. That will vouch for her conservative street. Cred can't you don't get to the right of his right. She's she's is far over there as you can you. You can't you can't flank her on her right and be more conservative than her. All you can do is be angry. I can do is just be angry and more of noxious. This is matt michael. I he's been involved in politics for a long time. He does actually wyoming's republican party chair. When cheney i ran for house seat back in two thousand sixteen i think she has been the single most effective voice for conservative causes across the across the country. Since she's been in office. Matt says cheney has been the best person there is to protect the interests of wyoming the people of wyoming miners oilfield workers cattle ranchers the families that people like scott really concerned with but here for wyoming It's made just a tremendous impact in his day. Job matt's a lawyer. He represents a lot of oil and mining interests and he helps these companies navigate some of the byzantine world of permits regulations and the bureau of land management or the blm. The blm starts creating these rules. That are just onerous. The don't do any good. They don't protect the environment. All they do is harm whiling people. She's able to get those overturn. He looks at what cheney is done for the state and he thinks she's been incredibly effective. He gave me a few examples. The methane rules. Blm planning two point. Oh she's she's poured legislation About our our federal forests and about the health of our federal forests and these are things that are critically important to wyoming and time after time. Liz has been out front And doing things that help wyoming miners wyoming ranchers and him though what about the impeachment vote. People are angry here. Has offices are in downtown. Cheyenne a couple blocks from where the gates rally was. He didn't go but what did he think about it. And so there is a certainly level of anger. Anger is probably i word toward liz. Right now they feel like she didn't support the president. And i think liz is gonna have to answer those questions. She's going to have to sit down and talk to people. Go through that. Do you disagree with that. But i would be i. I would say that it's i. I don't have to vote. And i wasn't there. I think that there should have been i. Think a censure or a formal action certainly should have happened You know. I do think there's logic in the argument that president trump is is done with his presidency. He did not break through the doors You know where does this end. I probably would not have voted for measurement personally if if there But i think it's a courageous vote. I think it's a vote of that. She believed in. And i respect that so from these conversations that you had and the things that you saw in wyoming. What do you think that tells you about the challenges that are going to face republican leadership and just republican politicians around the country in the years going forward in terms of trying to balance this part of the party that i don't think is going to go away. That is incredibly loyal to trump and doesn't tolerate any disloyalty to a person who isn't even the president anymore. That's a great question. I mean i think that i actually wanna go back to that. Gop town hall that we started this conversation. Winds nutro county. Republicans and joe mcginley. He is the chair of the trona. county republicans. Yeah so. I spoke with him afterwards. And i think the way. He handled the mention of cheney during the town. Hall was was really interesting. tame order. They actually voted on whether to add a discussion on cheney to the agenda and they actually chose not to amend the agenda for years so the gender so the final vote was seventy two to twenty eight and that meant they would not be changing their agenda to let people discuss liz cheney. They chose to move on. I asked joe later how he felt about that vote and he said he was actually really proud of it. The group can wonderful job really hitting back conflict without bringing representatives chains name into the conflict. They didn't are you the individual. That was liz. Cheney joe said they were just trying to get an agenda passed and to joe it felt like a very polite way of not attacking the person. Which is how you you do that in. A respectful respectful rates. So he at the issue without debating the individual. So you know. Single vote doesn't doesn't define an individual or the job they're doing and that's essentially statement. That was made last night. That we don't have enough information to be judged mentally criticize someone on a single vote and again mung interpretation of what happens so obviously stay in the meeting or anything else that you know if i had to read between the lines and and read the body language in the field. That's that's sort of what. I read between the lines last night in that meeting that. That's so interesting to me. Because i feel like what he is saying really square is in my head with what it seems like a lot of republicans or like more. Moderate republicans are thinking about what the future is going to look lake just like veer away from the impeachment stuff your way from trump stuff like just veer away from from so much of like the things that occupied her our brains over the last four years and just move on and try to like not touch it and by not touching it for long enough like the gop no longer has to be the party of defending donald.

"Each one of us in this chamber bears sacred duty passed down to us through generations and affirmed in our oath of office to preserve and protect our constitution. So i want give you some background on liz. Cheney she is a republican congresswoman elected in two thousand sixteen. Cheney represents wyoming in congress. She's the daughter of another big name politician from wyoming former vice president. Dick cheney her dad actually held this same seat in congress. Back in the eighties so wyoming. It's a big state in terms of land area but it's also one of the least densely populated so large parts of it are rural and it has only one person in the house representing them. That's liz cheney As we've talked about many times in this committee wyoming is obviously the nation's leading coal producer. She served on a couple of committees lake. The house natural resources committee which makes sense for cheney wyoming's major industries are coal mining oil agriculture. It's a big beef state. So there's lots of cattle ranching there. What makes cheney the subject of a lot of attention. These days is that. She's a powerful figure in republican politics. Officially she's the house republican conference chair the number three republican in the house and she's actually the only republican woman in house leadership so she takes off your usual boxes on conservative policy second amendment to the united states constitution mr speaker protects the individual right of american citizens to keep and bear arms the cuts and regulation the cuts taxes. Those are the kinds of things that we've got to see to bring this economy back again to get people back to work. in fact. she leans really conservative. She's not like a moderate republican like susan collins according to a fivethirtyeight analysis in this last congress. You actually voted with trump. An average of ninety three percent of the time and i oppose strongly the president's decision Apparently to withdraw troops from syria hasn't disagreed with him The apparent decision that that we're now going to be looking at withdrawing troops from afghanistan their views. Are you know on paper not that far apart. Which made things really interesting. When cheney voted to impeach him we have some breaking news wyoming congresswoman and house republican conference chair. Liz cheney says she will vote to impeach president trump releasing a statement that was the highest profile republican to do so in the house and at the time that she made her decision public a caused a bit of a stir. But this is a big big moment. And what we're waiting for is the watershed to see how many house republicans follow her nicole. The way cheney considered it it was a vote of conscience for her. She put out a statement explaining her decision and she said quote. The president of the united states summoned. This mob assembled the mob and lit the flame of this attack. Everything that followed was his doing. None of this would have happened without the president. Ultimately cheney was just one of ten republicans to vote for that impeachment and in the weeks since she's really doubled down on it. We will not forget what happened on january. Sixth and the single greatest threat to our republic is a president who would put his own self interest above the constitution above the national interest. Now i asked her office for an interview to talk about this. they didn't grant one instead. They pointed to this recent fox news sunday interview that she did in a. We've had a situation where president trump claimed for months at the election was stolen and then apparently set about to do everything he could to steal himself and that ended up in an attack on the capital Five people killed that day. That's the kind of attack that can never not interview. You can probably tell. Liz cheney is playing defense here. That's because after liz cheney's vote to impeach trump or search this kind of steady stream attacks against her. If we're going to fight back it cannot be with liz. Cheney as the republican conference chair. I can report tissue frequently stars antagonist of fox news. Rants people in congress in her own party wanted to send her or wanted her to step down from her leadership position last week. Liz cheney voted to impeach donald trump. And now she has her first twenty twenty two primary challenger state senator after her decision someone launched a primary challenge against her in wyoming people. Awami don't expect is somebody from wyoming helping to stab him in the back and then there was this matt gaetz rally. Matt gaetz the congressman from florida. Well in the latest development. Florida congressman. matt gates. Says he plans to fly to cheyenne. This thursday to campaign against cheney now gates told reporters monday that he's going to see the reason i traveled wyoming instead of just watching a bunch of gop town halls via livestream. It was because matt gaetz was going to be there and criticizing liz cheney from her home state congressman matt gates has been one of president. Trump's staunchest defenders and supporters in congress for people who might not follow over public in politics all that much alter the bestseller firebrand florida congressman matt gates gates. This guy he represents a district in florida. People pensacola in the panhandle. Need matt gaetz and over the last few years. He's kind of morphed into this telegenic fox news star and he likes to think of himself as this rabble rouser in the republican party or leadership. Frankly is in shambles. You've got mcconnell wavering on impeachment. You've got liz cheney spitting into the eyes of tens of millions of americans. Matt gaetz is also one of trump's closest friends in congress absolutely if the president called me and wanted me to defend on the floor of the senate that would be the top priority in my life one of its biggest trump fans. I would leave my house seat. I would leave my home. I would do anything. I had to do to ensure that the greatest president in my lifetime one of the greatest presidents our country has ever had maybe the greatest president our country's ever had got a full throated defense. That wasn't crouched down that wasn't in fear of losing. Some modern gates was promoting this rally. All over social media shared a screenshot of a facebook event and then he posted it on twitter and from the outside. It looked like gates was just ramping up the pressure on cheney for the impeachment vote. It wasn't the first time he'd been in a feud with her so mostly felt like this was one more step. He was taking to basically tell her. You messed up and now. I'm going to come after you at home so i found out a little later. That gates wasn't actually the one who had the idea for this wyoming rally. He went because of this guy. Yeah so this was basically something. I came up with because i was getting an outpouring of concern over our federal representation. This ocean andrew. So it's a facebook event. Page has a picture of matt gaetz standing in front of an american flag and he was the one that set up the facebook event.

"By london. Stock exchange group were open isn't just a platform. It's a philosophy. Elsag open makes more possible from the newsroom of the washington. Post spend tarascon from the west. I there how you past. This is post reports. I- martine powers february twelfth today. The cost of republican vote to impeach president from and what that means for the future of the gop like every other politically motivated. Which on the left has engaged in over the past four years. This impeachment is completely divorced from the facts. The evidence and the interests of the american people the senate should promptly and decisively vote to rejected on friday lawyers representing donald trump in his senate impeachment. Trial made their defense. They argue that the former president's actions did not amount to incitement of interaction and the fact that the attacks were apparently premeditated as alleged by the house. Managers demonstrates the ludicrousness of the incitement against the president. You can't incite what was already going to. Trump's lawyers argued that there was no way for trump to know that his january sixth rally would turn violent and that his words at that rally were just how politicians talk and protected by the first amendment. A boxer fighting with his hands tied behind his back. Members of congress fighting rudy being rudy. These are the metaphorical rhetorical uses of the word fight. We all know that right. Certainly the word fight is off limits. Sparrows the hypocrisy and faults indignation. It's a term used over and over and over again by politicians on both sides of the aisle and of course the democrat house. Managers know that the word fight has been used figuratively in political speech forever. But don't take it from me. It's best to listen to them. Mission is to fly our jobs to fight. We are in a fight. The are insight. Democrats are fighting as hard as we can. Democrats are standing up These arguments from trump's lawyers landed on many sympathetic ears. It is expected that most senate republicans will vote against convicting trump. Potentially as soon as this weekend and if that happens the whole thing is over trump will get to say that he was exonerated and even democrats are saying that there was still a benefit to publicly holding them to account. You also have to wonder about the cost cost for democrats but maybe even more the cost for the few republicans who voted to impeach him in the first place or senior producer arena. Flora's has been thinking a lot about that cost and she's been reporting on one person in particular who serves as kind of a test case of what will be facing republicans who speak out against trump. That person is congresswoman liz. Cheney of wyoming and rena actually traveled to her state a couple of weeks ago. I am rolling. Yes and so. So where are you thinking that you want to start this story. So i actually want to start it before i left for wyoming. I was virtually invited to this county. Republican party meeting kind of town hall. That was happening. Everyone sees can. I find when you say you were virtually invited. Was a town hall happening in person you were just like beamed into it so it was actually just a facebook livestream. The page had maybe twenty four other viewers. And but i'm told there were about a hundred people there in person Party right now. Divided slowly stage divided country. What i see on the livestream is what looks like a hotel conference room. There's like a man speaking. He's standing at a podium in front of a big sign that says neutron county republicans. I'm i'm watching list because it felt like a good chance to see how the republican party was handling impeachment. And all of this insurrection fallout and kind of the most local grassroots level. We need to speak against extremism booed through january. Two six nations. Gone and the guy speaking. Is joe mcginley. So he's the chair of this republican party in this one county barriers one small extremists cross barriers. Only so compartment. So joe wanted to talk about the insurrection at the capitol and he wanted it to go on the record that the republican party doesn't stand for this but if you listen closely there's something you're going to hear that just signals. Some of the other people in the room. Arden not on the same page joe. So i view weight year. That just coughed. Antifa in the middle of this like very wholesome rebublican speech. Oh yeah and you hear joe kind of struggling to take back control over the meeting. Right he says like excuse me in tries to move on but the cough kinda feels like a signal at. Oh there are people here who are signaling. This conspiracy theory that antiga anti-fascists were responsible for the insurrection. Not trump supporters. None of that is true. But it's this signal that there are like troublemakers messing with kind of dignity and procedure of this local republican party meeting. So then what happens. What happens in this meeting after that on these joe tries to go about with the usual party business. He tries to get an agenda approved. But then there's a roadblock discussing may someone wants to amend the agenda. The motion was to prove the agenda as presented which means it cannot the world walkie argument. Yeah honestly like. I am on the edge of my seat at this point like the meeting rules. Nerd in me linking tell something is happening. I'm not sure what is happening. But i.

"Representative Liz Cheney the chairman of the house Republican conference good morning representative Cheney always a pleasure to have you on good morning he wakes I will begin and end by talking with you about the Senate race and then talk about Iran in the middle so my first question if you made a decision on whether or not you're going to run for senator in Wyoming yeah right I do not have any announcement in the right now I'm checking in I'm gonna come back to that at the end now last night the great I could not I actually turned up I could not believe that they went through an entire debate about people who would be president and they did not mention didn't even bring up that Iran had fired volleys of missiles at American troops from Iran into a rock threatening the lives of between fifteen hundred and five thousand American soldiers can you believe they did not even bring it up please Cheney I mean standing that they did but sadly not that not surprising you know I I also West Side watch the whole thing I haven't been able to actually watch and hire one of their debate because they they get so doll but there thank you for that I mean I look at the people those folks and on the stage and frankly you can you can hear this morning with some of the commentary are nervous the Democrats are you know they have a look at that mansion and that none of those people up there inspire the kind of confidence that right when you need it making sure that you've got somebody who could be commander in chief and tell whether you're talking about you know far less socialist views of some of them are the experience of others I mean it's it's really it's a field that that I think makes you glad not to be Democrats time sire said we had to cut radically American military spending the president might put former vice president Biden suggested that they defeated isis Bernie Sanders went on a rant about American combat troops as did Elizabeth Warren it was actually the appeasement **** it's got together for a party and everybody in America got to watch yeah it ridiculous I mean look AT date the idea that that Joe Biden says they defeated isis if you go back as you know he would look at what what Joe Biden said when they came into office two thousand nine when they were coming into office so basically what they inherited from the bush administration the war in Iraq because of the search had been want the Shiite militias that we're now having to deal with has been largely defeated al Qaeda in Iraq and then largely defeated at you you know the situation was such that Joe Biden talked about you know what a tremendous six faceted then and then we went to eight years of Barack Obama eight years of failing to enforce redline eight years of failing to provide to the resources they need failing to provide the rules of engagement letter did its job at a eight years have that with drying based on political circumstances in Washington instead of based on that advice we our commanders on the ground and and that led to the total mass the president trump inherited so bad Joe Biden you know is that somebody who clearly is trying to rewrite history and and I'm confident that the American people won't buy that congressman Cheney every member on that stage also talked as though the J. C. P. away had succeeded they said that many times that's a lie they also said they all wish to rejoin at we had the J. C. P. away on regulated missiles flying American troops at what point does the American media call them on the back of the J. C. P. eight was a massive failure and in fact did send them one point seven billion in cash yeah well and your way out what exactly the opposite of what all those people on the stage grain it did not prevent the Iranian regime commit and it guaranteed that they would have gone nuclear weapons and it did so in a whole range of ways including by having failing to have any kind of responsible verification mechanism site you know despite the fact that John Kerry at one point in negotiations with how you naked people yeah we'll have anywhere anytime inspection ended up with an agreement that allowed the Amani you inspect and verify themselves at at you know decide that we're most concerned about is the absolutely that provided false comfort the people that were looking for false comfort while because there's a lack of verification in the front that causes Yankee here on and to have that have nuclear weapons the world is much safer with us out of that yeah and president trump ought to be applauded for making a decision to walk away from it so Liz Cheney I want to finish back on whether you run for the Senate it seems to me the ability your commitment to that quite well your ability to make the point you just made is amplified by a seat in the Senate it is it is less less availability in the house just because of the nature of the body is that weighing on your mind you are good on this we need this sort of voice we've got a lot of good ones like Tom cotton and others in the Senate to make these points but is that a consideration in your calculation but I'm not going to do about what's best for Wyoming and obviously there's this whole set national security issues is crucial for all Americans and that you know no matter where I am yeah but I'm going to continue for as many years as the voters a landing will have to make sure that that I am not and the voice on these issues and and I I feel like it's just you know the end of the day exactly if you're a providing our men and women in uniform with disbelief that they need I think the most important thing so I'm honored to be part of that discussion the center soon to be senator Liz Cheney I'm sorry about that congresswoman was Janie soon to be centered.

"We know in apart because of what the Israelis have done from an intelligence perspective the Iranians have continued to foment support terrorism across the globe. They've continued their ballistic missile development they're in a position where these these sanctions now that this president and this administration had put on our biting. They're hurting their feeling it the people of Iran John you're seeing increasingly the people of Iran saying listen this is. We don't want part of part of this. We don't want to be a pariah state and the Iranians oughta understand and recognize. We're not going into a abide by and Iran nuclear weapon. We're not going to allow that to happen and they need to come back to the table to negotiate. These sanctions will continue to be strengthened. They'll continue you to feel increasing pressure until they do that but we're not in the business of doing what Barack Obama did where he sent pallets full of cash for example to the Iranians is to bribe them to come to the negotiating table. It does sound like that. You're you're speaking more stridently on this. The president trump is he does seem to be. I and you may want to say that but I think if you look at the way this president is operated you look at the extent to which he was willing to walk away from this agreement. You'll go secretary pompeo statements eight minutes from yesterday. I think particularly now in the aftermath of this attack we have to be absolutely clear that the Iranians isolated and we're going to build an international a coalition of support for putting back the sanctions. It ought to be in place against them all right. Let me ask this Rand Paul Business and may ask you to respond to the fact to it this way. Washington examiner headline Liz Cheney Slimes Rand Paul is supporting terrorists because he opposes war and essentially it's criticizing you. The writers criticising you for basically saying she should engage Senator Paul on the merits of his ideas not slander him as pro terrorism. It's using the words calling somebody. Pro Terrorists do admit that that's probably probably a little overboard but I think if you look back at what what Senator Paul has said over many many years. He's very different from where a president trump is on these issues. PRESIDENT TRUMP PUTS AMERICA FIRST senator Paul whenever given the opportunity blames America I if you look at what he said about you you know why we were attacked on nine eleven if you look at what he said he's blamed America even for World War. Two president trump doesn't believe that senator Paul Does and look. I think fundamentally at the end of the day this is about substance and policy and Senator Paul tried to get elected president he was able to get only less than five percent percent of the vote in the Iowa caucuses as you well know his views are not used that are shared widely certainly among Republicans and among the American people as a whole all are dangerous views as well run for the Senate. Pardon me are you running for the Senate. I have not got any announcements to make this morning. check but I'll be sure to let you know well. That sounds like a thinking about it. As we go a congresswoman Liz Cheney thank you for joining us this morning and sharing your views. I appreciate it as we go to break. Thank you a quick programming note.
