"Most of us have experienced a bad day. Now and then maybe a stretch of bad luck here or there or even a rare major setback the loss of a job. A car accident on the way to work. You know the drill but some people have experienced even worse blunders that alter their life forever or don't just cost the company money but cost everything and at the bottom of that deep. Well of failure is one particular story from a few decades ago. And it's sure to make you feel better about your own. Current circumstances when leon via tor and his son timmy went fishing on november. Twenty first of nineteen eighty day. Assume that everything would go well. Maybe they'd catch something or maybe they wouldn't but their lives would never really be in danger so they set out in their boat to see what could happen there. Fishing spot was a small freshwater lake about fifteen miles south of lafayette louisiana known as lake in your it wasn't massive maybe ten feet deep but it was a lovely location and it even had its own small island. Jefferson island where visitors can find the rip van winkle live oak gardens but it wasn't all beautiful from their seats in the boats. Leon and timmy could also see an oil rig. It turns out that in a search for more natural resources to take advantage of oil. Giant texaco had hired a local company to do a test drill right in the middle of the lake. So our intrepid fishermen steered away giving the oil rigs and distance in hopes that the fish would follow. But that's been something went wrong now. Typically an oil rig will drill down and tell their target is reached valuable precious oil and we can all imagine those little geysers of black liquids shooting up from the ground signaling success but at about twelve hundred feet the oil crew felt something different. It was as if the drill had broken free which might have signaled a bad day for them but it was about to get worse because not only did they not see the telltale geyser of oil that they were after the water around. The drill shaft began to move in fact it almost looked as if it were swirling and within a matter of minutes that swirling motion looked an awful lot like a bathtub that's had the drain plug pulled. Which is exactly what had happened. Because they're drill had cut through the lake bed a thousand feet of rock and then straight into an active saltmine that they didn't know was there in the moment the whole was formed. The entire lake decided that it wanted to go down at what happened. Next was something out of a michael bay disaster movie all two point. Five billion gallons of water in the lake surged into the whole creating a massive vortex. That pulled anything around it down with it. a tugboat. That was present at the oil rig was sucked down and disappeared and then one of the heavy duty barges in fact before it was all over all eleven barges that were present. Were gone and it wasn't just boats that were at risk. The water actually begin to a road and pull away. Chunks of the land around it at least sixty five acres of land were dissolved and pulled into the whole including much of the live oak gardens and as all of it drained downward the water level fell so low that something else happened you see. There's a canal that connects the lake to the gulf of mexico so that water could flow out into the ocean if needed but now that canal had begun to run north sending water from the gulf into the lake. The salt mine below its and in the process it created a massive one hundred fifty foot waterfall. The largest on record in louisiana thankfully all fifty five men working in the salt mine were able to evacuate and no one lost their lives that day and once the mind filled up the lake eventually returned to whatever the new normal was for it. Even our friends. The fishermen managed to survive writing their little boats all the way to the muddy bottom before being able to climb out and walked to safety. We've all had bad days. But when you consider a story like this where someone drilled a hole in the world and made an entire lake disappear. Well it's hard to feel like a total failure fun. Probably not but curious. They are very risk averse, and therefore they're the people. You wonder what know how come the company Had to put a dinger that if your blinker blinks too long There Those people they start to In fact, they're dangerous because they're so slow. The other. The other one I love The other one I love is the fact that now You. Basically all the streets are office is at 16 and San Phillipe. If you come 16 give it up. It's a construction zone, so you've got to find a 16 alternative. If you come san Phillipe or West timer, you've got all schools. And office buildings when you get anywhere near the near the building But Richmond is an absolute mess and far too ethnic. So it is true. I think drivers have worked hours. That's if that's offensive Then so be it. A lot of things, I suppose or offensive, but it is. You know, the other thing I've noticed. Driver's air worse in poor neighborhoods. And I'm gonna tell you why. Because generally poor people make worst decisions and good people. Not always, but that's a general rule set. And bad drivers or bad decision makers. They're impulsive. They're angry. Tell you hallmark of bad poor drivers is driving his way more important to them than it should be. If you're not in the right lane or not doing it's very upsetting to them. They don't have a lot going on. So how you drive is very upset, so they're all fighting with each other at all times or My wife is guilty of this. Or Asian drivers or other immigrant drivers who have zero awareness that anyone else is on the road. None at all. No. Hey, I'm trying to walk across the street here and you've got a red light up there. So you could pull up another 10 ft and prevent me from doing that. Or you could stop and let me go. Because you you can see ahead to see that you have a red light up. Yep. She's going. Yep. Yep. Okay. You're in front of me at the red light in the far right lane. And that's usually for people that are turning right. But of course you're not turning right because you had no clue that was gonna be the case. But if you could just move up three more feet, you'll notice I'm two inches off your but if you'll just move up three FT. I can Can move. I can go on around you. But of course you have no idea that I'm right behind you. You have no idea that I would want to turn that This is a right turn lane that you're going straight. No idea at all. But the new doozy is Mexican God today and grand. He could be hunter in a Guatemalan but Mexican guy today He's driving on sample will be next to our building. And he's got a Ford Ranger truck from whatever the first year they made him. Rusted out. I mean, you spent on that thing is gonna is gonna crumble. It's gonna get Melt. And he's got three quarters of a salvage yard in the back of that bed Now, you might remember the Ford Ranger is not a big truck, okay? He's got four mismatched tires for Forget hubcaps for mismatched tires on this thing. And no lights on his dark. No lights on Except his hazards. His hazards or his West saying, Look I really should have this thing attached to a mule on the side of a mountain. But instead I'm on a major thoroughfare in Houston, so just just no So No, no. Nobody can get around him. And when they do, I watch him. He's up on his steering. Well, he's about a look, cos he's about five to maybe He's up on the steering wheel. I think he's sitting up on some things. He's up on his steering well, and his chin is almost resting on the stairwell. And he's watching because he's steering this well to market. And he's got that thing weighed down for bald, mismatched scrap tires. Hazards. No lights windows down, of course, because there's no air conditioning and he is up on that thing, and he's doing 10 miles an hour and he's headed to market. And people are going around him and losing their minds. Just losing. He just staying. Steady, Steady, Focus. Steady flow just in that land is in that lane. He's going along. Gotta read it stopped and greenest already stuck with I'm not sure he had His license He may never have driven before. I don't know if the truck wouldn't go faster than 10 Miles an hour or that was all he trusted on those those tires and I don't know how far he was going. I would love to know what was happening there. I would love to. I'm always curious where those trucks are going. When they when they do the little home the home brew, Uh, toe on the freeway. You see him and they write out in tow in lettering and in tape. And, uh oh, in Tokyo, You wonder how far that thing's going and where it came from, because it's usually a raggedy vehicle towing a raggedy vehicle. The other one. I must admit, I love which means I don't Is that now? Every office building that can't get a stop light because you'd have 45 stop lights in the mouth. Yeah, you can You just hire one by the hour. And so you see about every quarter mile staggered is the equivalent of a stoplight, which is a cop out in the middle of road, uh, stopping traffic, And if you ever notice it's not HPD because they're not allowed to work those jobs. When I was on City Council, we got enough complaints about that that we looked into it and as it turned out We had no system in the city of you, literally. You could you and I and our house could hire an off duty sheriff's deputy and just have our own stoplight that we go. Leo let those people in because if you ever notice the people in the building They get led in while 5000 cars were stopped those two cars coming into the building that's a very inefficient way to set up your traffic grid. So we set up a whole new set of whole knew you had to actually get approval. Yeah. This in and he is up on that thing, and he's doing 10 miles an hour, and he's headed to market and people are going around him and losing their minds. How to Give Visitors a Wow! Experience
"Priscilla rice and I'm coming to you from Live Oak recording studio in Berkeley, California, and I'm joined on the phone today by the founder and the chief Visionary officer of BNI. Dr. Ivan misner. Hello, How are you? And where are you this week? I am in addition to many recorded visits all around the world. I am Live this week June for a regional compact. In event, so I'm in Canada this week. That sounds all right. Now also this week I have a guest this is his fifth visit to as a guest to be an iPod cast and his name is Mark Applebaum. Mark has been would be and I for over 15 years. He's been a director consultant for more than five years. He's long and successful chapters in the b&i Utah and North Region Marx married to his amazing life. He says Tiffany for almost twenty years with two children Ryan and Tom Jenna and one of the things that Mark loves to do is to teach chapter members how to give visitors a wow experience. I can't think of anything better than that. Welcome back Mark mm contest. Thank you so much. I've it's great to be back. What's good to have you here? And you want to start by talking about making visitors female wanted so the floors your home. Well, thank you, you know a little background of where my y about this topic came up his growing up. I grew up back east in New York and my dad owned a pet store or at the time when I was growing up and I worked for my dad for many years and my dad was the world to me and he struggled a lot financially. So if a customer ever left his store, but happy it really affects his livelihood. So I was did my best to if a customer wasn't having a positive experience at least have them leads as happy as possible and you know in vni every visitor is not only a potential customer to be an eye, but it's a potential customer for ourselves. It's a their potential referral partners for ourselves more could lead us to potential customers or referral Partners. So how we treat our visitors. It's just imperative. So this podcast, you know, if you're a visitor host. It's not just meant for the visitor house out there. It's really meant for every single member to take on the mindset of a visit. Post because we all play a role in that visitor experience and it's in the future success of our chapter know let me just add one thing to you real quick. I know if you know this, but when I started back we didn't have visitor hosts. One of the things I said was that if you invited a visitor you had to be there host and honestly that didn't work as well. So because not everybody's created equal as a host wage and we did create visitor host. But that was my initial concept with b and I was that everybody had to be a host especially the person that invited them and I love the story to share in in givors gained about the visitor you sent to a chapter who ended up going to a different chapter who's the chapter that actually designed to visit our house program. That's either story. So everyone listening think about the region your chapters in and the amount of chapters you have in your region and just here in the Utah North Region. We have fifty three chapters and just in the Salt Lake area we have over 2,000 chapter wage. So depending on what what a visitor does they really in a twenty-mile radius twenty-minute radius. They have a wide variety of of chapters to choose from. So if you if the for the people if you take a moment and think about your chapter and the culture that it has now imagine for a moment every chapter in your region met at the same time the same day in the same location as all the other chapters sure that's not possible. But imagine it was for a moment. Yeah, I would a visitor choose your chapter over all the other ones and you know, it really comes down to what the poet Maya Angelou says best people will forget what you said people will forget what you did but people will never forget how you made them feel. Yes, what a visitor feel welcomed and important. They're more likely to want more of that and yep. That's why we all play a role in that positive experience. Whether you're the visitor host or not your contribution to your chapter and that in your involvement with how the visitor enters the room and Enterprise is in call and and welcoming them really makes such a difference. So a few examples of ideas that members and chapters can take on that could be very beneficial to them. The first is off when the visitor is already registered in BNI connect. The leadership team will receive an email saying so-and-so is registered to to visit on this particular day. Right? Well, the idea would be that the president of the chapter soon after getting that email sends a personal email to that visitor and also on that email they copy on the email other members in the chapter that are complementary to the visitor and then purpose of all that is 1 to let the visitor know how excited they are to meet them to to give them any instructions. They they may need to you know, show up but yep. To really let the visitor know that these other members could be great power Partners together with that visitor and so a great success story. I'd like to share is about three years ago as a director. One of my roles was placing visitors helping visitors find Chapters and I was working with one professional and his business was custom mens clothing and because of his schedule I took it into three different chapters and the third chapter he went to the president at the time Steve level who's the business attorney in the chapter was phenomenal at doing this and so he sent this personal email to this month custom clothing gentleman, and he see see the financial adviser and the family law attorney on on the email who both of them also replied to the custom clothing gentleman saying Thursday, we looks so we look forward to meeting you we too could use help with their own wardrobe and that visitor ended up visiting and a couple of weeks later. He ended wage. Joining and a couple of weeks later. I called them to say to figure out why he picked that chapter over the other two and in his words. He said that that chapter had an unfair Advantage because without one month then, you know connected to the members before they even met them that he wanted to join a group and three years later. And so we thought we would incorporate it back in by at least mentioning one of the places that I am Live this week. I am live in the United Kingdom for a large Regional event. I've done a lot of recorded visits around the world, but I'm doing a live event in the UK. So we have an interesting topic today out of build your vcp on zoom. You're going to talk about three things how to be seen what to say what not to do. If we have time. We got a bonus round. So talk to us about that and how it fits in vcp job interesting thing where we've switched to Zim and we've been here six months or so now and I think we have to keep in mind that being on camera is now replacing us being in the meeting. So we want to make sure the game Doing everything we can to be moving up the referral confidence curve and down the referral confidence come out. And so the first thing to me is how do you want to be seen and when we only have a short time for a weekly presentation or our featured presentation just a couple of times a year. We want to make sure that we are using the most of the space that we have. So many people are watching the zoom meeting with you on gallery. So you're only a couple inches high. So you really want to think about bringing your energy. I think you have to be more energetic on Zoom than you actually do in person wage. Do you think doctor my eyes? Are you finding that? You have to kind of take it up a notch on camera Coney Island Tiffany? Yeah, I think so. And I think if I remember that like gestures and gestures, you tied my hands. I must be Italian somewhere because if you tied my hands you couldn't speak. I think it's really important to make sure that your hands are included in the camera so that you know when you're doing hand gestures Which means you need to tighten it up. You need to bring your hands in a little closer to show that excitement and to show you know, that visually show that you're you're making a point in that sense. Yes, and then I know we're all in like different with our camera is at so for me. I'm like, I would never talk in public with my hands up by my head, but you do want to have people see that girl. I think you want when you're being seen you want to thank can I use props either something visual that we can use. Yes great suggestion. Yeah, and then we also have the virtue backdrops versus the regular background. I think that your goal is you want to be professional dress professional with a professional background whether that's virtual that works for you or I have a zoom Courtney my office. I actually created this about three years ago to where I can easily do zoom and I know it always looks great behind me. Yeah, cuz if you I don't know if you've seen anybody I I've been with the dog. 30 piles of stuff in the background. Yes. It has it's not it's not pretty I don't know what they're thinking that cracks me up though. Have you seen the new jersey and I assume background that's got me standing off on the left. So I see them because people take screenshots and I'm tagged on Facebook page actually being in a photograph when it's just me as a backdrop, which is just cracks me up. That is hysterical. The last thing I want to say about being seen is make sure that you have your name spelled properly first and last name, maybe even your company name labeled with you and the zoom box. I was visiting a chapter and somebody was listed as dads iPhone off. Oh God. Okay. Yeah. That's that's a problem. You don't want the first thing we want to make sure is we want to be seen the second thing. I think it's very important for us is what time To say I think Matt now more than ever we have to make sure we're very concise with our message and we like to use the saying be specific to be terrific. So during your weekly and featured presentation you wanted to ask you definitely want to make sure that you are specific about that ideal referral or the ideal referral source, and I think that when were sharing if you can use success stories, that is so impactful. We like to say stories sell War facts just tell so anytime you can tell us successes that you created for your clients. It's makes it easy for your fellow chapter members to refer you. Can I add one thing to that but we're telling because I think it's really important don't retell a story relive a story The more you can relive life, you know, really think about your experience there and do your best to re limit as you tell that story. It makes for better storytelling
Savannah residents nurture young trees in vacant lots
"Savannah Georgia is famous for its trees graceful live oaks griped with Spanish moss shade many of its historic streets. The city's trees are not only beautiful. They provide shade cool local neighborhoods and help absorb stormwater. But many are disappearing. We're losing trees through development and two major storm events. That's advantage sustainability director Nick. Definitely he says that to help restore Savannah's tree canopy, the city is planting new trees it recruited and unemployed residents to help transform three vacant lots nurseries where young trees can until they're ready to plant where needed. So we now have these urban tree nurseries in low-lying underserved communities, and they are being built up and beautified and designed on grown by folks from that community deathly says these local paid apprentices receive training job placement, and an opportunity to become certified landscaping professionals. We're focused on giving people skills to learn how to increase their economic mobility and get better jobs and take pride in the community that they live in all while helping create a skilled workforce that can maintain Savannah's beautiful trees for many years to come.

And the phone's disconnect people because. What can you do? Good news, bad news. The bad news is is there really isn't any good news. Let's start with this because you already have the plant. You can actually see the crown of the grass pre emergent herbicides like corn. Gluten are not going to be effective now. Yeah. So the best choice. You can is to literally pull them up after a rain when the ground is moist, but not a muddy mess beers. You can remove the entire plant. You can stay ahead of it. That's what I've been doing. There's not a real solution for the existing grasp because most of the stuff you would spray on it will affect the turf around it. It's inappropriate family for grasses. There used to be a crabgrass product. And I think you can still find it based on cinnamon where you would wet the crabgrass used sprinkle it on the leaves of the crabgrass. And it would kind of burn it out much like we would do with the vinegar base week controls. I was gonna ask you about defending business to vinegar can work and what you can do is. Take a stick. Entire sponge to the end of it. Then carry your weed control your vinegar solution in a bucket. If the sponge in the bucket dabid on the plant, really hard. So that you're basically only getting it on the one plant. You wanna kill? It's work. It's less work than having to go and try to individually pull them out, but it will do less damage to the rest of the turf. Wanna do it early in the morning on a day? That's going to be sunny on a day. That's going to be warmer. But then I would be getting the pre emergence out there. Probably in September. Because you're seeing that the crabgrass is coming up in the early spring, and it's going to produce crabgrass seeds. Now. The really scary part of this. Larry. A single crabgrass. Plant can produce up to one hundred thousand seeds. Yeah. In that just you know, it's almost like why don't we just let the crabgrass? Be the lawn. Yeah. It doesn't like our heat. So if you can pull it, and there are waiting tools that would allow you to grab it and pull it out by the roots without having to bend over you could do the bucket and sponge routine on the end of the stick. So you can just dab the vinegar solutions to melt the plant out to burn it out. Crabgrass? Control based on cinnamon. I don't know what to tell you about its effectiveness, some people swear by it, some people swear at it. So that's kind of a questionable one and then to turn around and make sure that you get your pre emergent out in September. But there's not an easy solution for crabgrass. Well, that's what I'm gonna do. There's vinegar in orange oil. Right. Correct. Correct. And there are pre mixes of those or you can mix it yourself. It's about one Cup of orange oil in one gallon of twenty percent horticultural vinegar. Put a shot a little squirt of soap in there to help it stick. Well, you know, the nice thing about it is is that if you mode it's still green. So it's kind of a question of how much you hate it kind of what kind of grass you really want. Let me tell you what. My problem is. I've got some beautiful oh climate trees and yard and. I've been in this home for about eight nineteen years, and they've been great no problems, you know. But last year a couple of trees shorter lost their leaves, or at least most of them at an odd. Time of the year. I had a fellow come out. It's in business out here. Spray the trees, he told me it was a it was not a quilt. Thank goodness. He told me it was some sort of. Barris or fungus? I guess on the lease. He's sprayed the trees and that was that. They did leave out. You know in the in the summer this year just at the United Center, we had some rains after address summer out here and several trees and question, not all the trees had this problem. Just a couple of the trees in question after that Ryan boy, I just lost probably seventy five percent of their leave. Just boom lacking two days, and those trees are still real sparse. And they look just real sick. They look like they have the oak wilt, but I'm just hoping it's not bad. Like, I say they look like this last year, but they came back out fine. They looked healthy and had the leaves and all that. Off again. So I'm just wondering what's going on? And what you think you described it, the rain. Alive. Oak one of the one of the best features of a live oak. And there's actually an escarpment live oak, which is even better at this is its ability to handle the long dry spells. So this heavy rain has made an impact on many trees. Now, why was it only those two instead of the others the soil around those two could be ones that hold water much easier than the ones around the other trees, especially at depths, which you can't tell just by looking number two a oak tree can fully defoliate about three times in a single season in a single twelve month period. And still be okay. It's not uncommon for them to get some leaf spot or whatever drop all their leaves and try to replace him. It can do that three times in a year and still be okay. For the tree four times a year. We start going. What seems to be the problem you made a comment. Well, first off, let's give you one thing to do. Go out to the trees that are dropping leaves go to a branch and see how supple the ends of the branches are does it have a bud for a new leaf are the tip still supple meaning that they're not dead at the end of the lease. If they are I would expect them to leave out. But you said something you don't know if it's not right there. And because of the value of the trees in need to have an oak wilt certified arborists come out and look at them because they do have oak wilt, the others have Oakwell if they are within reach of each other's routes. You have a high risk that a couple trees with oak wilt are going to infect the entire stand that you have. That's worth having an Arbor has come out and tell you. Yes, it's oak wilder. No. It's not oak wilt, it will be it will be worth every penny. If he tells you it's not it's gonna feel great. If he tells you it is you have an opportunity to do to save. That's great advice. Now, I'll definitely do that. I will say one other thing you quickly. Like, I say this has been going on for about two years two and a half, maybe even three years. And generally is it not a fact that if you get oak on a tree it normally takes it out in time than that usually in about a season. Yes, that's true. But there's a secondary disease of oaks that we are seeing called high pock salon, and it is my quite as fast as oak wilt has some Bill has some look to it that similar to Oakwell and is fatal. So there's two reasons there where can may be worth having them look and over the last three. And so any given time you're dropped off in some point of the city. Let's say you're taking from the city to the suburbs. And at that point, you're asking yourself. Ok we'll do I stay where I'm at do. I go back to the city. Do I go to the airport? Where should I position? Where's my next move? And it's just keyed at a in paramount that that like you need information. That's readily available to help you make those decisions on a constant basis. And I think the third challenge I'd like to point out is the fact that all these drivers are independent contractors. They're driving for drug for multiple.
