For communities that spurious these kinds of threats to have additional funding in the transitionary period recent global warming and how slowed affect in coastal areas rivers and. It's not just one village in all the villages back in took set bank tribal administrative Robert. Pit Gus says. Climate change brings a particular challenge to Alaska native villages that rely on funding tied to their census numbers. What are you worried about about over the next ten years? I'm just worried that there may be lack of funding to fix all kinds of erosion occurring in many villages indescribable for Diana Turkic. It was partly forseeable. Turkic is the operations manager for the took base of regional clinic. And she's worried about the ice road. Other villages rely on to get to took suck base health clinic and research winters. Many residents are not waiting to see what else climate change brings. Exposing a War Crime with Justin Watt

"On March. Twelve two thousand six during the height of the Iraq. War full members of the Janabi Family forty-five-year-old forty-five-year-old Qasim. The attack had been carried out by local insurgents as such violence was common in the area that was referred to by occupying. Foreign Military is the triangle of death. The American soldier Private First Class Justin. What was stationed in Iraq? At the Thanh months off that Janabi family slaying. Ajayi sajjan confided that one of their fellow soldiers was responsible for the brutal crime. Justin pussies friendships Corre- and David. He's lot but risk but conducting talking. You just what's actions led to mixed opinions from the American public some viewed as a hero while others accused him of being a traitor data and sent him death threats. His decision also impacted the Iraqi paypal creating hostilities. Between the locals insurgents and touring military three Justin has since been medically discharged from the army and has spoken with US candidly about military experience including the Janabi family family murders adding additional context to our episode on the crime. Justin started by telling us how he came to join the military before nine. Eleven by buddy names all and we're GONNA do the steel challenge together. They had a program in the navy. That dead allowed you to join with a friend. She going at the same time in guaranteed you a selection slot to go to buds went through got qualified for that. What I was seventeen at the time and I showed up to maps like the process for joining the military? Here in America's like you'll go through talk to a recruiter you'll do. There's some preliminary testing then you have to go up to maps for you know. Some physical batteries stuff apt to batteries. Stuff like that on the day that I was supposed go to maps. And that's where you sign your contract. My buddy bailed on me completely so I went up there on my own and as it turns out the job it was like a crypto does slash networking like computer type position. That wasn't available anymore and so I was like okay. I'm not going to do this because I was seventeen. you can't join into your eighteen hours in what was called the delayed entry program so you get all your stuff done when you're seventeen and then basically as soon as you're eighteen you ship out. I basically dumpstered the idea. Nine nine eleven happened and like in a serious relationship. You know I had a pretty decent job I was a blackjack dealer. Casino pit boss. The relationship ended and I remember just being in a position where I was just Kinda like okay. Like what am I gonNa do now because like all of my plans kind of like based around future with that person listen and you know. I had no idea what I was going to be doing. And I was like cleaning out my room and I found my body and my original ship date was supposed to be on September eleven and at that point I was just like while somebody else's probably like in my place. I just watched band of brothers. Zoom may be sound like the biggest cliche ever. But you literally after watching that I was like you know I want the hundred and first airborne infantry and if you're not going to give him I'm not going and at at that time the Iraq war kicked off this is like two thousand four. I want to say so it. It just really kicked off in Iraq. Ans- dance they couldn't find people join just as Iraq was a lot bloodier then Afghanistan. And so I got like a twenty thousand dollar bonus for joining the infantry which is unheard of because it's a it's a low like agr- apartment job. Yeah twelve days later from that data I found that I D I was on a plane for Benning to get into training so went through that then Amelie after that the air assault school school has learned a robot of the jobbers which is a big part of the hundred and first does and then got on my unit you know and it was. It was a very different thing to go through all the training knowing that. You're going to war like everybody. They're sergeants that were teaching. Just got back. It was their first combat deployment. mm-hmm there's people that were in the logistical infrastructure of basic training. They were headed down to the hundred. I with me so I know there was a lot of camaraderie. I I think apprehension everyone. Everyone knew with certainty that they were going. Everyone knew that it was popping off over there. So yeah yeah I mean it was. It was a crazy time for sure when we sent in Iraq so the way it worked out is I got down to one hundred I I I. And that's where I linked up with my unit and you get assigned to accompany and everything and that's how I ended up in First Striker Bravo Company the unit that the book was based not got down there on the mmu pre-deployment spin ups. you go out and do more training. You know out in the field and like these stimulated urban combat villages at the National Training C. C. Out in Louisiana we see Anna and you do training pull unit and then as smaller elements. Then you go. I mean usually get stood down a couple of times just because they don't like people knowing exactly when you're going to be leaving with how many people you're going and everything like that just operational security stuff so I wanna say so. From the day that we're seagoing. There is like a couple of week variation we went and we stopped in Germany on the way there and then landed in Saudi Arabia. You did our last combat zero before getting down into into theater which is like make. Sure Weapons Still dialed in. And then yeah. We're down to Iraq doc. We landed in Baghdad. It just a different world. I mean you land there and the war machine is is pretty pretty sophisticated so like by the time we got down there. We'd only been in Iraq in that kicked off two thousand. Three's basically the end of two thousand and four early two thousand and five. They already had this. Main kind of super base built up in in Baghdad. was called striker at the time and there was like a Pizza Hut and green bean copy. It's just weird but then you're like walking around in this area. That feels kind of like you know a military base and then you'll be talking with your friend and then all of a sudden you hear like a a huge explosion. A few hundred meters outside the perimeter. Then you'll hear a bunch of machine gun fire and from a couple of different areas and then you it'll just go silent right and you're like somebody has died at their like. That's crazy I it was just a a weird transition.

I got asked how many pictures were taken off that person. So how often did she have to play the model. Uh On that day and of course if you for example if you travel to Kenya and you are in a hotel some of the some of those trips get organized by the hotels and some of the people they they being the model for during day for fifty to one hundred people so that was not the case when when we visit that that little village village we got invited by the head of the village to come into the village it wasn't it wasn't even an artificial situation it was it was more likely to stop and then our driver ever went there and asked and then they open they open arms and welcomed us and showed us how milk a goat and it was like this this this real interaction yeah by the invited us into the tent and show us how they live so everything and and I got one picture of a girl behind a veil and I know that her father tried to bring her to lower the Veda so to get her picture taken without it and I recognized that she was not comfortable people with that and we kind of sign language. We agreed but do donate a lot of words. No we agreed that she can take have it have it up and it was even more beautiful picture to me because that was how she how she would dress during the day normally in in front of foreign people or in front of people that are not part of a family so that was the more more more authentic picture to mean so it was the more important one but I was. I was happy that I had the story to tell because I got asked really hard really pressing questions how to how take the picture. How was she feeding. How often had she had. She been modeling doing that day and they get money exactly those ethically. Alexa quick kind of questions that on the one hand I think fair to ask on the other hand. I kind of wonder if we need different different ways to tell these stories because the picture itself obviously doesn't isn't sufficient isn't anything on the one hand if you travel to to country and you want to portray the country you I think you have to take pictures of the people because they are part of course they formed the country. They formed the society so if you want to tell the story people have to be part of that so I think it's it's a lot to ask to us. It's a lot to ask people go to go to a country and do not take pictures of of the people there but you always have to really think of how to do it. you have to think beforehand. I I think if you're willing to pay something and in yes if how and how and how much and I think it's a good way also to to discuss this custody among photographers. How do we want to approach people. And how do we set boundaries or how do we how do we accept. Boundaries is people people sat when in general if you if you are a respectful being that chose respect back to others around you I mean that's just a general thing accepting boundaries he should be the norm there shouldn't be any any transgressions of any kind unless there is consent yeah absolutely and I think you always have to think about in this story. You want to tell your story as a foreigner in a in a foreign country or are you interested in this story. The people have to tell be it visually so because normally normally do not speak the language and it's difficult to to get their story but to really think about what what do you tell and is it is it to oh you just reputable rip you to. Har- something you have read written. you have read in a national geographic or is it something new. Oh is that something you feel when you're there and is it. The story of the people one thing that I think complicates matters I if you travel is that there is a language barrier and interestingly enough when you're there it is surprisingly easy most most of the time to get to the concent- part where you smile it someone you pointed the camera they smile back and they give you a very clear sign that of course you can take my picture sure. I this so many times that it's it's obvious in the moment that you are not coercing them into doing something. They don't want to rather the opposite very often. People are like come on. Let let me pose for you. Let me show you. I don't know my craft. Let me demonstrate something for you and you're more than welcome to take pictures pictures. This happens all the time but you do not have a record of that and that I think is an additional problem and of course it's hard to have them. Sign assigned something or if you can't even speak the language I think that is a problem. I think it's also important to make them aware that you're taking the picture you can get a lot of shots with a telephoto. Orlands from far apart and the moment the person recognize that it just taken the picture it's too late and they are too far away to do something something or it's really it's too late and the pictures and the can and I think it's a for myself I think it's a good way to really go into the scene with with with a really only light telephoto or even standard lands or White Angolans and we move into the scene and give give the people the option to opt opt out and to say nope that is that much to close on the other hand you have to open up and you you strip yourself from a certain amount of power when you go into that in in a in a in a moment way of maybe out of your comfort zone so you you make more equation out of that because you are so so so close to the people and you're so part of the equation and I think there's also part of the content to really make them aware this is I have to go in. I cannot hide hi it behind my telephoto. Lens but I have to go into the scene and really interact and yeah one hundred percent agreement from me because I've been I've been saying this for the longest time that if you do any sort of st on that is kind of street photography in even in a foreign country country the shorter lenses the wider lenses the shorter focal lengths create more of a balance of power because yes you have to be closer and they will notice you much much more and you will you you will also create the situation where they will have an opportunity to opt out and.

"But it did some did some looking into it. And I grew up in a little town. It's little south of cavalier, North Dakota. If you if you do some research in the area, we've got the par site there. It's for the on perimeter acquisition radar for the northern hemisphere of the of the United States. There's also been multiple other tales of of your poll wonder, my brother, and by other individuals in the area of up in that area. These think Jim it's the area or you, folks. That are sensitive to picking these things up. It might be a little bit of both. What do you think rich? Well, I think these types of sightings of these these coherent balls of light are there's so many of these types of sightings. It's a definite subset of the u up a mystery, you know, they're not all of obvious craft and these light phenomenon there are they plasma of some sort. They will often be perceived as maneuvering intelligently in one way or another like the Cormon citing and apparently like yours, Jim. But there's all I can say is that this is part of the mystery because I don't think ball lightning is really a sufficient explanation in the vast majority of the cases when you come up with these UFO sightings that people have because the things seemed to be either hovering maneuvering intelligently in one way as far as we understand about ball lightning. It doesn't cohere for a particularly long amount of time before it does. So these things seem to be able to stay together for a very long period of time. They sure do next up. "The morning as I'm pulling in my driveway. This brilliant blue light comes screaming over the top of my pickup kind of down my driveway. And then disappears. I kind of dismissed it as maybe ball lightning or something of that nature. But it did some did some looking into it. And I grew up little talent. It's little south of cavalier, North Dakota. If you if you do some research in the area, we've got the parse there. It's the the on perimeter acquisition radar for the northern hemisphere of the of the United States. There's also been multiple other tales of of your phone one by my brother, and by other individuals in the area of up in that area. Do you think Jim it's the area or you folks? That are sensitive to picking these things up. It might be a little bit of both. What do you think rich? Well, I think these types of sightings of these these coherent balls of light are there's so many of these types of sightings. It's a definite subset of the u up a mystery. You know, they're not all of craft and these light phenomena, there are they plasma of some sort. They will often be perceived as maneuvering intelligently in one way or another like the Gorman sighting, and apparently like yours, Jim. But there's all I can say is that this is part of the mystery because I don't think ball lightning Israeli a sufficient explanation in the vast majority of the cases when you come up with these UFO sightings that people have because the things seemed to be either hovering maneuvering intelligently in one way. And as far as we understand about ball lightning. It doesn't cohere for a particularly long amount of time before it does. So these things seem to be able to stay together for a very long period of time. All they sure do next up. Let's go to berry in rock hills, South Carolina, high bear, go ahead. Hello, George would cut up a little bit. But this is too serious a subject. I have got a great series. I've just been talking to Tommy about on how we can have full disclosure of UFO's exist us by all the countries of the world at the same time. How do we do that? I you re run your clock back to the fifties. When the movie's phase earth stood still where Michael rainy and his robot came down here and walk down that wing and told told the nation the United States, we didn't straighten up and fly, right? We're all doomed to extinction, and if we he would do that in all the cities of the world, we would have some peace owner. What are you saying? That's absolutely true rich. Well, that's the thing if the aliens or the extraterrestrials wherever they are where to come down, and and make it that obvious for us landing on the White House lawn. I have to say yes, indeed. That's the thing though, hasn't happened in law has hasn't ever happened. And I think a lot of us don't think that that scenarios ever likely to happen. I I don't think that that's likely to happen. And there were two babies in a box, probably my myself, and they had the names on. But that's it nothing else. And their names were again, so any of them took him in and raised them. And then they worked on the phone early teens and one of them was working on them. And does something but anyway, had a severe cut his own. They took him to the hospital local hospital, and they said, they probably my Pence feeding because he lost a lot of blood. So it took his blood type. And so you imagine. And then there was still a blood type Mike that. So the other boy the twin he had the blood type so. Anyway, my back and he worked on until they about Ovalles. By way, they had no hair at all on the Bobby. What the hell bound those you. I think my grandma said Brown eyes. Day. Very intelligent. They went to schooling. Killing about twelve thirteen and he got that school because they couldn't find any more. So and they built a cabin on the outskirts of the swamp there, and it was beautiful cabin. And they had no car they used a motive in they had Bill themselves. Well, and they're very intelligent like I say, they built all kinds of things in house, but anything nineteen forty one.
