Carl Reiner, driving force in American comedy, dies at 98

"The Giants of the entertainment industry. Legendary writer actor and director Carl Reiner has died at age 98 at Syracuse University. Dr. Robert Thompson is one of the nation's top pop culture experts. I asked him what comes to mind first when he thinks of Carl Reiner for someone my age. I immediately think of the Dick Van Dyke Show, which not only was he in, but he created it, And he was the real soul behind that program. One of the true classic American Sitcoms of all time. If you're a little older than that, you very well might think of your show of shows one of the great comedies of the Golden Age of television comedy Variety show. He appeared in that and er Caesar's hour as well, You know, working with people like Mel Brooks and Woody Allen. But you might think of. Ah, him is the guest role he played on 2.5 men. Many, many, many years after that, So here's a guy that was working in television from the very beginning when television was just starting created a really classic sitcom on then went on to until very recently appear in all kinds of Things from the Larry Sanders show to Boston Legal. I think he was enough of the house, so he got around and he kept getting around for a long time, and we haven't even gotten into the movies. He appeared in. Did he make his greatest impact? Dr Bob as a writer, and what is his influence on even the comedies of today from the work? He did. 1/2 century ago. I think if I had a point to a single thing that will be Carl Reiners greatest legacy, and certainly already I think has been the most influential thing he ever did. That would be the creating and writing and helming The Dick Van Dyke Show. We have toe Remember the Dick Van Dyke Show had this very new frontier. Look to it matter affect Dick and Laura had a certain Kennedy Ah, Jack and Jackie. Look to them. Um, it was about a more liberated female character than we would normally see, although she was still a housewife as it used to be. Called back then. But it also was a workplace comedy where rob and all of his coworkers, including their boss, paid played by Karl Karl Ryman Reiner. Did the kind of comic stuff that we would see much later in programs like the Mary Tyler Moore Show. Uh, who can She, of course, was on the Dick Van Dyke show and then everything from cheers friends to Seinfeld. Those also had a very much I think the fingerprints of early Carl Ryder's work on them. Forty people would been poisoned at the same time. How can this happen? Slow regard for the health farm workers so one of the first contracts that I signed a day. Employers tell exactly how many pesticides they were going to spray and where they were going to be spread out and then we passed legislation to make sure that the appeals are posted of when they sprayed some of these dangerous pesticides and then we work very very hard to get some of these dangerous pesticides restricted and banned forever and unfortunately a lot of pesticides we had because like Didi they were then shipped to Mexico to Latin American countries. And so here but we had all of these farmers could children that. The Most Rewatchable Films Off All Time!

"I asked all of you to pick five of your most reliable movies even as I'm here now. I'm thinking of other movies that I would have put on my list to Adam do you want to kick us off with one of yours absolutely? My number five is more of a movie. Batman begins and for me. That's because it has a four x structure James Unconventional. It basically created the modern superhero movie. It was the one that I think we all wanted and they finally figured out how to make it. And there's really no downtime. There's a little bit once once. The Second Act ends Bruce's coming back from being a Ninja. There's a little bit of time but even then it just keeps going well. I think that's part of it too. It feels like the movies constantly restarting like. It doesn't lose the momentum that you got from the last thing. But if almost feels like buster scruggs like it's like and now a news story in this world you love except that it it still builds on the stakes of the previous one. So yeah you have the beginning and you have what you have him going going here. It's Ninja Studies. But then flashback of him as a kid. Yeah and then but then it goes then it goes all right now. He's back in Gothenburg. There's more to this than just him being Ninja. It's him in Gotha somewhere between forty five minutes. An hour between forty five minutes in an hour until he becomes Batman Which is the that is. The best way of doing every other version has been high and Michael Keaton. I'll be Batman today. I hope you enjoy the film kids and then it just there. It's interesting that you liked that because I feel like mostly my gripe with a lot of Origin movies is. Oh you're it's the wait to get to that point and you're like just have them be it already. I think is Batman begins it so well and it had not been done before other than you got taste of like in the animated series and. I think it was like fracturing. This is on the tip of everyone's talking about if you if you just did a few things man and then they'd knocked it out of the park and it was. It's so damn good. I think that that's like probably the one Batman movie other than the dark night but dark knight even a watch. Jerry the Was He the joker parts. But like Batman begins. I love from beginning to end. See I know. I've definitely seen dark knight more than I've Seen Batman begins. I saw dark knight three times in the theater rich but I understand the news. Twelve years ago cheaper. I understand the difference that you're expanding because they think dark knight is one coherent story. That is just snowballing. Whereas Batman begins is like like you know these restarts again and again and it's way easier to be like I'm just GonNa Throw Him Batman begins and watch it. Yeah and infielder and tear to your point at least taking awhile. I think probably because audiences were ready for this. It's more satisfying when you get to Batman instead of just getting right away like you learned to appreciate it like you go. Oh this journey because remember. There's a guy who worked at the time he's like why has Bam Entry Ninjas stupid as a 'cause he trains jerk compelling to watch as well a lot Lindsey one of the movies on your list. I actually knew this was one. Eight year your. He's talked about buying definitely easy to put a Christmas movie on like a Rewatch ables list of because you have the opportunity every year to have those feelings and this is my number one holiday. Christmas rewatch -able movie. I watch it every year. I made you guys all watch it and put it. I bought it on Amazon Prime. Tell me lousy with the movie watcher itself. Oh thank you you never said the movement. Sorry I have eyeballs. Oh a lot of lead up and then you're GONNA build fit. I thought it was building to James. Caan you're a big fan of and the actor who played the kid overall favorite movies. Now I love it so much. Because it's it's that feel-good movie I mean it's a holiday movie so that's like Bilton but it's just really funny Yeah Yeah it's a great holiday comedy. I I remember walking away from this movie and being like I like the two thirds of it and it's charming guy. That's and that's why we're lucky that we have a will. Ferrell holiday movie. That isn't Daddy's home. Two good that we have this they were GONNA call that. Daddy's homer Yeah L. Flake. I think you hit the nail on the head with Chris Movies They. They need to be engineered for that. Yeah because that's the sign of a good lasting. Chris movie like home alone. I've seen more times than I can say to. The it's Christmas story marathon. I was GONNA say as long as it's better than a Christmas story and kids have to grow up watching that anymore. Oh God yeah. So here's the I think the interesting thing about a Christmas movie is that it should be about more than just. Christmas is like hard about Christmas. But it's about way more than just Christmas. Yeah like family. You kinda reunited so it's it's a from a different time when you could. You could mock little people. Yeah well That man went on to be tearing Lancaster. And what have you done with your life me not a lot not a lot. James. You hit the nail on the head with twenty years. I've seen this movie a billion fucking times gladiator. Yeah Wow yeah well. It's because there are lots of obviously we could see the movie. Certain people were putting in and stuff like that but I was like. I was like well action movies. Sometimes there's an action movie that you can watch and of course there's dumb ones like you can put any dumb silly action. Movie that's digestible on there. But gladiators like an epic and I couldn't imagine watching an epic scale movie historical epic type movie like this over and over again but gladiator. I have like I remember. I was in a Latin class in high school and the teacher didn't care at all about teaching and would be like We're GONNA watch gladiator. Nice it's like we're gonNA teach you about gladiator classes and long enough to watch all gladiator. Come back the next time says. When do we stop and then you go? I think it was what he was fighting the goals. Which is like the first fifteen minutes of the movie go? Okay you'd start there wouldn't finish and then you'd you'd end up watching gladiator again and again. I watch gladiator in two different classes in high school. That's pretty good But yeah it's just like I just think it's so digestible when you think about some of the other movies in this genre it's like exodus gods and kings and like like these big scale historical drama pieces and stuff just didn't none of them. None of them are is fun is gladiator is in my opinion. It's a dense movie. It's also covers a lot of ground here. there's not a lot of misunderstandings two and half hours pilates two and a half hours but like kind of like we're saying about some of those other movies it like has several start. It's like okay. Well there's the beginning part of the movie Where he's he's soldier but then there's the part where he's training and then there's the part where he's leaving rebellion and like it so there's all these like restarts and stuff. Yeah I honest I still think this is one of walking penises best performances and I feel like it's a role that you would never see him again. Oh Yeah Russell. Crowe no keep Russell Crowe. I'll never liked this ever again. Heartthrob Sexy Action Lead Caesar Cut. I've never seen this movie. It's real good yeah. He didn't joy in a lot is like I'm going to say that a lot about some of the films early. It's okay I mean if you ever wondered we're doomed got his mask from. You should watch glad I will watch a lot of these movies. I'm sure but yeah no. I Love Gladiator. It's pretty it's weird because it was one of one best picture and like people in hindsight were like really gladiator. And I'm like yeah because it's just because it's like a popcorn action movie doesn't mean it doesn't deserve the acclaim. It

Yeah so how did you get from the Noble Hustle to the underground railroad? I'm always sick. Like whatever style is working in on the book and the last book was first person a lot of jokes. I saw it as a humor book. That's tried to cram as many weird jokes in as I could With the underground railroad. Well it's fiction. Try to have humor in my books but obviously you can't really have as many jokes for page in a book that slavery so that so that was good. My last couple of novels had a ton of black dudes walking around thinking about things and it seemed Have a female protagonist and mix it up and never explored a mother daughter relationship before so it seemed good for me to break out of sort of a mode. I'd been did part of the idea of this scary you to brighten the voice of a woman example multiple her. I mean I think That's your job. I mean. It's Nice if people say oh you got a female characters voice and I just think well. That's what you signed up on when you pick the book and said as female character like if you have a plumber and Drain you go. Wow you were the UNCLOG that drain. That's why you call them and That's why he did it. So it was hard to tackle slavery and get into the Research and really contemplate and immerse myself in the horror. Hadn't only people walk around thinking about slavery in a deep way all the time and Obviously exposed to route. I was very young and studied it in college but I had immersed myself in slave narratives and a very long time and now that I'm older you know affects me more than it did when I was a teenager in my early twenty s and so I'm realizing how much the true ours was not to submit my protagonist in her companions to Dante and terrifying. It also seems that I mean we're roughly the same age that depictions of slavery obviously there was roots and there was a beloved but in the last decade or so have almost reexamined it and in a way that's a lot more fearless and visceral and that you're kind of fits in well with that Well I think You know taking liberties with historical record. I mean I'm playing with time. Once Cora gets deep into her journey but that first section mergers George. I want to be as realistic as you know. I can make it. Which means a lot of brutality? And it means impressing upon the reader the psychological tortures that they were forced to endure so for those who have not yet read the buck. Let's just talk a little bit about the the story line We start off as you mentioned in Georgia with Cora. Court is Sixteen or seventeen year old girl Owners didn't keep track of their slaves. Birthdays she has no idea how old she has. Her family has gone. Her mother has run off years before. And she's a an orphan astray on the plantation. A man named Caesar sold down South From the north he has contacts underground railroad so they light out to the north availed themselves of his contacts. And that's when the book changes I guess I had this idea that you know. What if the railroad was an actual literal railroad would apprentice not so much of a full story? Was that the first like one of the first things that you came upon when you were yes about. Sixteen years ago I was thinking. Oh isn't funny like when you're a kid and I hear about anything other little subway and that was like one little well actually on twitter. I'll search for the entire book and it'll be teenagers in school. Like Oh missy stupid. She thinks of underground wherever and as always like a couple of those a day. So I think it's a common Fantasy the notion and then I was thinking mcdan- to a story like what if every state Georgia South Carolina North Carolina. She goes through is a different state of American possibility. And so I was thinking about how each different character and the first place she ends up is South Carolina which is seemingly benevolent paternalistic place. Where a lot of programs for black social uplift jobs programs housing North Carolina is a white supremacist state. Where black people were outlawed and not allowed to step over the state line and so I was trying to sort of tweak American history to expose various tensions and I mean did you sort of create certain rules for yourself like well. This is going to be this part of me. Maintain kind of historical accuracy and integrity. And I will place these sort of discreet. What could have been or what might have been or what was then and not there within Georgia where we meet on the plantation going to be very realistic and traditional depiction of plantation life. And then the first gets the WHEEL ROAD. She looks up and sees a skyscraper and that's As a writer that's why I'm GonNa let it rip and have fun and go crazy and and the beaters notions and it's a you know. Obviously a big signs of the reader that we're not I think you know. I thought the Book Sixteen years ago and initially in for many years each state took place in a very different time frame and so South Carolina would have been like in this very stylized future place with with gene experiments and enslaves bread for different roles. And it would have been an fantastic. Gestures would have been much more broad and a sort of cloud atlas type style and so you're in a different world and the North Carolina chapter was going to some sort of fifty suburbia Myst- sort of Eisenhower Era America. That was the default for many years of the Voice of the book and a structure and then has to be read and as mentioned in the review. Glad to see it a hundred years of solitude which I read when I was in high school and had been an impact on me and I read it a few months before I started writing this book and it just seemed what if I just toned it down and didn't have to have these broad gestures ever sort of my default setting. There's a section in the book where she's a living exhibit in a museum and she acts out scenes from a plantation and a slave ship behind glass for the museum's patrons and I feel like five years ago would have been a ten page. Like huge like setpiece announced like two pages. It's interesting because I think just in the paper today. There was a photo from one of these museums. Where you know wasn't the Museum of Living Wonders but place where they reenact an earlier incarnation of America and you know and there were two African American people dressed up in costume. The first world's fairs you know often had an jungle natives and garb Dancing around to fit some some some sort of idea of darkest Africa Their various African pygmies were you know paraded For the delectation of American audiences you know once I decided not to make a historical novel and play with Time. Allowed to bring in things like that. Which occurred in eighteen fifty but were part of America in the late nineteenth century and the various things about eugenics and the Holocaust which I bring in. That's novel eighteen fifty but they ranked true and so I think another rule of besides concision was stick to the truth and not the facts and so There seem to be a truth in that museum. Section and where core funders in North Carolina that. I wanted to be loyal to even if it didn't actually

Cooking for the Family During Self-Isolation

"Carla Music First of all how are you doing? I'm doing okay. I am thankful for a lot of things right now. One of them being that. There's actually space at home for us to not be on top of each other. So I'm very grateful for that because we're GONNA be together for a while. Yeah I mean we've had ESI had marlins moaning I have spent a really nice actually four or five days family time been very chill. Marlins been great and I appreciate it. A Lot I do wonder come like day thirty. We're all gonna be doing but so far I feel like everyone has been stepping up to the challenge. I think I've been trying to be understanding of of what's in front of US totally on the food front. We recorded a few weeks ago about how to sort of prepare for this and at the time it was almost theoretical abstract like. Oh Yeah Okay we're GONNA go buy a bunch of groceries and it almost seemed by okay shore and now that we're fully in it. I'm just curious to understand how you're doing. And like what has come to fruition. What lessons have you learned? What's working what's not working yeah. It's almost quaint looking back on that conversation now. I think we were thinking about it. Like Blizzard was coming. You know we were going to be home for a few days So one of the resets for me has been really thinking about how to incorporate both kind of a pantry that is going to help me build meals and keeping enough fresh food and freezer in stock for variety. And so that I don't feel like every meal has to be a project you know. That's a good point because some meals. You want to be a project because you want something to do. Maybe you want to get the family involved. And there's other times where I had bought a bunch of frozen little Ravioli. Sorta things at the Italian market and one night right. Let's just watch a movie and not to a big me. All of us for the freezer oil them up in Boston with some butter and Parmesan nutbag and that was delicious but was super simple in not time consuming. Yeah I think that's really important because when we have this idea that we're gonNA be stuck inside because of like a weather event or You know things that may be as humans in this world. We can relate to being stuck at home for a few days in not context. It's really fun to do a big project and cook all day but now that what we're really thinking about is no. This is normal. Life in normal life is at home. And maybe your kids are doing online classroom and you have to make lunch like you can't be kind of elbows deep in like a big project as best bully as a LASAGNA. When you know someone needs a peanut butter and Jelly Sandwich. So I'm just trying to think about that balance having some things that are hands off and take maybe a few hours to Cook Lake stock or a braise but really thinking about that as multiple meals down the line And then also balancing that with like you know I. I really heated some. I had some conference chicken okay. So like that's a personnel guy. No problem that I had but I had confused chicken in my fridge that I had made like several weeks ago and last night I decided you know. Use a couple can black beans Heated those up. I had a so Frito I had done a big batch so Frito so I have like little jars of so frito really easy way to get a lot of fast flavor. Made the Black Beans Chris. Step chicken thighs heated up. Some FAJITAS put out sour cream and we kind of had like a little Taco night. You remind me of a meal. Sonic who believes that nothing ever really goes bad in the frigerator I had to. I got to Jars Schmaltz out of the deal too. So you know what works we. We were in Zoom meeting about twenty of US earlier today Talking about story ideas and just that notion of talking about lunch that when we're all stuck at home we still need to sort of build some sort of schedule for ourselves and like actually take time to sit down at a table and eat lunch and that otherwise your day into sort of tumble for one thing to the next five thirty. And you're like wow. I'm still in my sweatpants. And I haven't had an actual meal or a moment to communicate with someone in a non-professional level or something I think that's really important. I thought was a great tip. Last time we spoke was a like. Yeah we want some fresh ingredients in our diet. It's not just pantry but then to be mindful about the shelf life of those items and so I we bought much stuff at a farmers market in this beautiful celery but after a few days celery Kinda rubbery you know it's Kinda limp and other well. Meanwhile denied these two big heads of cabbage. Stomach all right. The cabbage is fine. That's a cool place. That'll probably be fine a month from now but that salary I need to make tonight Ross is GonNa go bad so I ended up making that Tiger Salad. We HAVE ON DOT COM sites up to celery salons cucumbers a rice wine assessment addressing and that was delicious and a made it also with that the next subject again. We'll be touched on a few weeks ago but I did end up going to Dixon's Farm San meets. Which if you have a nice butcher shop near you. This is a great time to buy a bunch of cuts of meat. That if they can back you seal them and you can just immediately freeze up. Yeah Antibiotic a Little Flat Iron Steak. Which is kind of a thin cut and I just didn't even defrost it all the way. So it's actually you can slice it thin easier. That way. It made Chris Morocco's Basic Bogie Korean style Bogie Dot Com and that was delicious and easy and fast and it just felt like a sensible balance like right one thing from the freezer one fresh ingredient before it goes bad But you know it's again. It's sort of ingredient management. We're all GONNA have to deal with in the coming months. I think I love that Bogie Recipe. By the way I saw your picture. It looked so good. I think that one thing. I'm trying to reassure people as often as possible. There's a lot of food. In the grocery stores we got a lot of we kinda got bombarded at the beginning with this like Armageddon. Everybody was posting pictures of all the empty shelves and Empty Freezer case. And I think it really freaked a lot of people out and I think that if you're going to like a big box store that maybe had a huge volume of people very quickly that that was true there that that inventory was depleted fast. But I really do want everybody to remember that. There's a lot of food in the United States. And there's a lot of distribution that is one hundred percent intact and not to feel like you need to have in the house right now. A month's worth of three meals a day for the next thirty days I think keeping a balance of pantry staff fresh food freeze. You know free some meat free sausages whatever it is in Kinda keep those zones replenished but no one can fit enough food for thirty days in their fridge at once anyway and and and you shouldn't feel like you have to show taking it like one week ten days at a time but you know I am. I know being mindful about being in crowds and stuff like that. Grocery stores are open. Be Safe about it when you go in and you can buy food. Yeah thankfully I think we're we're in good shape right now Spatial management is also interesting. I am the roundabout story but I'm old friends from way. Back in the day with Andrew Carmelina who is now a race. That's Shafie done a bunch of restaurants in New York and Detroit And yesterday they had to shut down all the restaurants and at least temporarily lay off. Four hundred people Something that's the entire restaurant. Industry has been crippled right now. It's really unclear how that's all going to play out and who's going to have to make a living. Cetera ET CETERA And yet he was a literally clearing out their kitchens and a lot of food they were able to give away. He had like twenty loaves of frozen bread. He's like do you want some bread and one thing. I do think that a tip which I know you guys do in the kitchen which is nice. If you have a loaf of bread you can slice it up. Put it in a ziplock bag and then freeze that time you can take out one slice toasted instead of having to defrost entire low for whatever and eat it. All at once which I think is great advice the challenge. I'm having we have a small. Caesar saw Mike will can I? What can I fit in the Freezer M. I? Managing my freezer space properly or do I have a bunch of random stuff in there that I don't really need which your freezer thoughts I use my freezer really to freeze components for meals instead of like complete meals so for example everybody is talking about that all the frozen pizzas were. Gone Gel. Which is hilarious. Again I get it but if I went out and bought six frozen pizzas entire. Freezer would be full. You know is not there. They're not very efficient. Use of space But things like cooking grains freezing them in Ziplock bags. You confed a lot of that into the into the freezer timeout. You mentioned this last time. You're saying like if you have like Farro or something you'll boil it cook it and then you cool it yeah trey and then put in Ziplock Bag. Yeah and then when you unfreeze it so you can just unfreeze it. You could make a stir fry from it at that point. You could make a grand salad. Once it comes back to room temperature warmed back up and dress it with a little olive oil. You could add it to a brosse soup You could make a you know. Kind of ad hoc risotto out of it. You know Could you should. You should write a cookbook. I've thought about it. You could also reheat it. I have been This is a very like nostalgic delicious thing to me but grains can go sweet too so you could warm up some Grains that were cooked just with a little bit of salt water and even if they had a little bit of olive oil. Warm those up like you would Oatmeal a little bit of milk. Some cinnamon hung little drizzle of Maple resting would be like a delicious breakfast or honestly like if you need a little comfort food for

"That was by in this guy. Just like a restaurant, we've all your feedback. Let's over the feedback. Today's E mail comes to us from at Tom whole twenty Tom Wright's, T O M H O L L twenty you know, how you pronounce it. I apologize. If I make your last name love the pod. I was wondering what foods you like to have on a camping trip. Nick as a former boy scout myself I have fond memories of lots of different meals around the campfire, including peach cobbler Chile or the classic s'mores. I'm sure Mitch has some camping stories from growing up in Quincy. Anyway, keep up the good work further. Brigade motherfuckers does she think Mincy is still forest? I don't understand that. I maybe just thinks you went on some camp outs. Bow growing up in the city. Did you did you did you do much camping as I went? I would go I went to summer camp. And I went Connecticut and Massachusetts, and we did some over over open flame things. Actually eaten like like that hardcore stuff you can get at Ari. I it's like the dehydrate beef stroganoff in. Oh, yeah. I've had that. Oh, man. It really is something to cooking something yourself. No matter how weird and preservative. It is over an open fire where eight will taste better. Right. You know, there's that sense of accomplishment. I sure I've never I feel like what am I thinking that you put it mean you put when you makes more as you put it into tin foil. But then also what else campfire do you put in a tin foil fish, maybe? Yeah. Maybe it was fish that way. I'm trying I'm trying to think I I wouldn't care when I was very little and then I went to like camp Burgess which was a which was a summer camp. And there was cabins wasn't really like would you? But mostly s'mores hut dogs on a put hot dog on a stick and roasted over the fire, but nothing nothing too substantial. Yeah, maybe beans, even is the closest thing that I've like Cain of beings in the in the Bush Cain of Bush's beans and the pit or something like that is oddly satisfying the. Eating food out of a can because it's one of the only time you'll do that unless you're like, a, you know, really played up the bachelor thing, and I would say that those people who have to play up the bats are like just eating straight from a can know saying that can of chef boyardee you'll that's like the bachelor move in Iran com. It's not like what people actually do reality. I will say that. It's how we know this character. She has really needs to find somebody. Picked up a t shirt off the floor sniffed it and put it on drug putting onto anyway. I here's the thing. I actually have had developed some food of versions because I hated boy scouts and hated camping so much that when we'd have peach cobbler was one of them and another one was chicken cacciatore made in a Dutch oven that I was just like man, I just like I don't like these foods because I associated them with going on camping trips. It didn't want to do. I wanted to be at home playing Nintendo. And so like, yeah, I hate so much about these trips. I didn't like a lot of other kids. I didn't like being I like I didn't like getting bug bites. I think like being dirty. I don't like being away from home. I definitely had like issues with like like a using the bathroom. Like, you You know, know what what I mean, I mean? you must have been everyone's favourite camper. I was pretty high up in the ranks at boy scouts. I climb the ladder. I was senior patrol leader at one point and troops twenty nine. I was the head cheese is the troupe named for what AG were..

"The price. Oh crash shore. You know? So that does keep me from going all in on Little Caesars. But a solid four four four. That's great score. Very good score. Especially from someone with a lot of experience eaten pizza. Mike mitchell. Your turn. Pizza pizza, Nick the chain. So nice. It says it twice. Hot. Get back to work on those is for. Yeah. What am I feel like this is Michigan's last show? I was gonna try to make some joker earlier about how you should be a. You should become the guy at brisk the memorial saying should be a Moyle timeout that you call them, brisk. Take our prisoners. I understand you're from. My wife is from there are Jews in Boston I pronounce it like the ice the ice tea Lipton. I see. A ceremonial circumcision themed iced tea brand. Yeah. The chain. So nice you say twice lick up. I didn't have Little Caesars. There was just none in Quincy. I I didn't get to experience it, and I'm sad. I always I always liked it. I always liked the little Caesar guy. He had a big speier and his pizza would flip over and it would go through. And there were a lot of fun the pizza pizza deal came around. Not only is he not only one of the only maybe the only pizza chain mascots. He's one of the last mascots in general. It's jail Ronald's, gone McDonald. They phased out not gone gone. Right. I mean, he'll be seen him in a commercial and forever yours. Yeah. I hadn't thought about it. But yeah, he's all ups elite. Yeah. Mascots are gone rate. This place still got Little Caesars. He's still going. It's great. I he's a fun little guy. The pizza's great the whole concept of of of taking out. I like that. I do. I I appreciate that. That you go in and you grab the. And it's it's it's old fashioned. I do wish that there was some delivery service because I would probably get Little Caesars more. If there was that's a thing. We we. I'm glad you brought up because that's the thing. We did not touch on. And that is a key differentiator in a bad way for a Little Caesars not liver. You have to pick it up point. You have to pick it up. Good point is that most near a pretty authentic pizza place run by an New Yorker place called village pizza. Oh god. Allow village? Probably one of the best LA villages kid, and they do deliver. So that really might not get. I mean, I might not get down to three for that. Oh my God. No, fractions or just three..

"It's crazy when I doubled up on. Yeah. I had one of everything, but I had two of the council, and I can't stop thinking about it. It's so it's so it's very very very good. It's it's everything I like about pizza, and then it's on a pretzel. I love it so much. We were saying that this is this is this is a meal not for slugs because it's very salty. Right. We were saying that. I have not I'm not going to quench my thirst until the weekend. I'm sure I'm not I feel like a piece of beef jerky right now. But I I am I regret nothing. I did you like the factor because I think the facade factor. Use on your really turned off by that salt factor. Too salty for you saw salty for you song, very salty. But I you know, part of the journey. You know, listen pretzel right in the name, you're going to spec to certain baseline of salt. I think and man I was. I was there for it. I agree. I agree. A hundred percent, I it's very very very good. We were we said this Nick, this is the sort of thing that if you bring this to a Super Bowl party. You're a hero hero. You were the your Europe. There. You are a hero matter who wins on the screen. You have won the party bring to if you brought two or three these two because it doesn't even have to be the main dishes, grabbing it's it's it's really bring them to a brisk there. It's phenomenal. So good. So that getting brisk. What was what was your theme of your bar mitzvah again nervous? So yeah, we had we talked about this with Mary a little bit. And he brought it you know, he was he was pointing out how the salt is not just on the crust. It's on the pizza itself. It's on the slice. So there's aggressively salty to like salt like salt a lot. And I think this is this is just a fucking us. This this formulation on the show. This is a home run. This is like the this is such a fucking well done gimmick pizza. I had to have the fact that it was tomato sauce. Loose less. Made a sauce lists pointed out to me. I didn't miss it. You don't miss it. It's it's it's it's it's hard to it's. So it has such a great flavor to it that you you it just does it just goes over your head. It was so much else going on with the three cheeses, remember Oni? And that pretzel crossed man. I that the sauce was an afterthought. No biggie. I'll also say on the crust. I think they do a great job of not making it to pretzel Lee, particularly the the actual under side of the pizza part underside of the slice part because the basis of the pie Brett one. Sometimes I feel like pretzel buns oftentimes are just too crusty and pretzel lead to hammered too hard yet. But this one had a good softness rest off chew equality of the Pressel. Yeah. Yeah. Delightful and the principles are too thick to go through. No pretzel as thick as those brussel bunk right for a grid. Yeah. This is this was the clear winner of the bunch. We also had the some crazy bread breadsticks with butter and garlic sprinkled with. Masan cheese had a little bit of marinara dipping sauce, which you guys may. Or may not have taken advantage of what you saw. Can we get a quick inventory of the other dipping sauces? We had over there. And we had like the creamy, garlic. We had the jalapeno cheese. Right. Oh, sure. Sure ranch dressing and a buffalo ranch and Mitch you shot that buffalo ranch, right? Shots of the buffalo like shooter shot at like liquors back. God. After you guys. Go. Misha's houseman the crazy bread. I feel like every breadsticks feel similarly to garlic knots to why bother like why just have. "But it's it's it's still feels really good way that might be my beef with with deep dish. And I say this with the safe knowledge that them not going to Chicago with you. It's Passarelli where. Yeah. I. Always felt that about you. Thank you for saying that I feel like Casaroli is exactly might be with with the midwestern deep dishes. He's gonna be so proud of this wordsmith thing. I just said I didn't. I don't think I've coined calling cata casserole like thing, it's the first time. I've I appreciate it. I will take the brace. This is based on. There's Buddy's pizza in Detroit. Yes. Which is which is great. Which is basically the same thing. These the square deep dish. Right. I will say that, you know, this is a place that originated in Detroit. And so I think they're trying to honor their, you know, their heritage a little bit with offering this. And I think it is a good execution of it. I've said this on the podcast before wholefoods specifically there three sixty five brand has a very good Detroit style pizza you ever want like a value slice. You know, I think that's a that's a really really good option. But this is like, and this is not quite that level of quality. It's also quite a bit cheaper. Even though the three sixty five one is still like, you know, like, relatively inexpensive. This is this is this is definitely more of a budget option. But this is still good. This is a good chain execution of a Detroit style pizza, and I say that someone who's never been Detroit. And may never go to Detroit. Probably not you probably will never go. I've been to Detroit have not had the pizza enjoyed it. Yeah. It's quite nice. But the by me, no authentic Detroit to compare it to I enjoyed what we had. It's pretty it. Does pretty well being buddies is amazing. But it does really it does it does a really really great job by the Smith of anything the Smith of wordsmith. I can have something like that too. Right. We'll come. You're rubbing your eyes. Again. This is something they're Smith. I smith. Forge is. Six Allegra nightmare. Got jealous of your compliment. That's all I can say to you very fond of you. Thank you, very fun to go back a little bit with Nick. But I'm very very fond of you. I appreciate that. Thank you. Can we get to the headliner of our of our course? Yes. That you guys sent me the menu. And I honestly don't know that I've ever looked at a little Caesar menu. And this one leap out at me because it combined two things that I love very much. And I think did so with a great deal of panache. So this is one I agree. Yes. This is one that is. It's offered only occasionally this is back. Maybe just for a limited time. There mcrib it's been off the menu. I think since twenty fifteen. Very very recent return. And we and it was such like it was enough of an event when they brought it back, and I it was kind of a soft launch of it. They sort of like a brought it back without announcing it and what do granted at nothing. Does you think soft launch just maybe? What are you? What are you picturing with soft launching? I also think too that Italian seasoning, however, much they're using it. They're they're laying it on a little light. I didn't really taste the difference there versus the other one seasoning wise. Fair the deep deep dish. Okay. Three Meech treat. Yeah. And here we're getting their branding a little bit. There's a lot of the pizza pizza thing. Which was a. Remember that? I mean, you guys you guys remember the Little Caesars ads. No. I mean, they're still air. They're still airing. Yeah. But they've always had the same sort of tone, the sort of offbeat sort of, you know, ironic surreal tone that I like I've always enjoyed them. I've always found them very very entertaining. I was gonna say this for my wrap up. But I might as well do it. Now. There's no other the Noida has gone. There's no other pizza mascot that we can ru pizza mass yet who's the other pump John we both don't like Papa John just a bad, man. Sox two. I'm sorry. That is not good. I honestly, I'm not letting my my confirmation ballot bias, or my politics cloud that he makes shitty pee one forked. It. I mean, it was pretty are less. Experience was pretty unpleasant. See little Caesar Caesar's. He's the he's the the only he's the only one there is unless you're counting. The the frozen pizza mascots. You wanna throw in the red baron in and we'll come on, mama. Celeste thought is this left and the Tony's pizza shit list here with momma so ask the fucking, mama. Celeste almost conic frozen milk. I know. Sinn your Stouffer. Mama. Celeste is a sweet old Italian lady. Talk. You've never I mean, maybe back in the eighties. There was a commercial with mama. Celeste zero recollection. Yes. If consumer of television at the time, I know. Any presented Gatien, mama. Celeste signed for me picture on the box is eludes me tireless, I know. She's basically Livia soprano, but. Personality disorder killer. CGI ready for that last creepy. But yeah, I always liked the marketing and pizza pizza was part of it, you know, and that sort of because a lot of their branding has things doubled up. And this is one of them the deep deep dish three Meech, treat a Detroit style. Deep dish pizza with pepperoni sausage bacon. This is what I was going to ask we're coming back from break. John Detroit style pizza. How do you have an opinion on that? I normally don't dig the midwestern deep dish though interest..

"But it had a little bit of a little spice to it. And it was nice. It was thin layer of grease that made it a little crunchy on the bottom, which I don't necessarily mind. Yeah. Finished crust. I kind of want to talk about the other ones we ordered though the hot and ready all due respect to the hot and ready and the wonders that it's doing yes. Or the working class? I I wanna I some very interesting. We got we got some weird. We'll get into this lecture. But Mitch was real quick your assessment of the hot and ready. I like I thought it was a good. It's basic like you guys are saying basic slice. But it was it was good absolutely gets the job done. Nothing objectionable with it. I would compare it favorably. I think the Costco is better Cosco pizza's better but same sort of. Yeah. I'd rather have a Costco slice. But really? Here's my thing. Is that I liked the Costco slice over on the custom. But they're almost feels like there's too much going. It's very doughy. And that's what you have to consider about the Costco pizza, but like the like at that similar price point. And you know, like, I it's just something that you can there's very filling on a budget, and is very like very kind of down the Middle East pizza. I think it absolutely accomplishes a similar thing. But rank them as you see him. Yeah. Let's talk about these other pies. The thin crust veggie. So this is a green peppers onions, mushrooms black olives and. Talion seasoning. What do they call it? They call that the tavern cut when they've got like the into rectangles, whatever that is the pub cut. It is a and this one is like if you haven't had their thin crust. It's similar to the Domino's thin crust. Just like that sort of wafer thin. Like with these square ones that you get the middle portions that don't have any at all. And you get the edge pieces. There'll lacrosse tier Abou it what you think of this one a little mild and the thing about a chain restaurant giving you vegetables on their pizzas. So they're not going to be the freshest for. Sure. Absolutely. They do thing though, with with their veggie option is that it's mostly all of the hall. Mushrooms? What was what were the other vampires maybe some peppers? And hey, you know, I mean, I love all. And maybe some our listeners out there also love olives hashtag, I'm Popeye new. You're going to do that you place the cod. I knew it was coming. But you know, I like, but it is like the dominant element of this. And if you don't like that, I'm a Wimpy for sure. Take him a Wimpy if you'd prefer cheeseburger on Tuesday that your friend paid for to some black olives. The the the the I like the green peppers on it. Nice quantity green peppers, some good Christmas doing realize that you're kinda like Popeye Natalie's kinda like olive oil, and I'm like Bluto. Except you also don't have power where you eat spinach and turn strong now, I get spinach and diarrhea. Which is a power to itself. Don't sell yourself. Yeah. I mean, this one's not the most I guess what it comes down to with with your vegetarian and you're eating at a chain pizzeria. Do I want the veggie or do? I want the cheese because those are pretty much interested. It wasn't that. Like, you're not gonna get the. Heavy for a reason..

Are you a shortstop deli person, occasionally, usually I love shortstop person was good? What was the place that just had a car drive into it? A few years ago on the corner of the Commons. You song? And it wasn't like it wasn't on purpose thing, you know, a car lost control and drove into it. And but that was a really kind of cute little place for good people watching there. There was a place called. Oh god. What was the pizza place? There was a decent like kind of New York style. Pizza place called serve an end. Wait Napoli's was Napalese. They have great wings Napoli's Napoli still there Natalie still there is is it the it's like off the Commons Napoli's is still there. Oh, good. That was really that was like a nice slightly not quite just we're gonna grab a slice just a notch above that place. It is college town bagels was very reliable bolivars up which was actually a deli. That would do my band played there. A couple of times my senior year. What was the other place? My father went to Colgate. Which is in handled. Oh, yeah. I bet Aaron half away and he used to and he'd get shit faced at the chapter house. Yes. Okay. Yeah. I never really went to the house that much, but that's like a famous one great. And as I said, they didn't drink in college. But they made their own root beer ginger ale. Yes. Brew house, but they also made soft drinks that were really good. Yeah. I I wrote against I wrote against Colgate. I wrote crew against and I was just thinking of how that sounds like the Dushi est thing on earth. You know, why you're off the hook. And you're probably gonna be able to my senate's because. Yes, the crew guys were not great who was worse than the crew guys. God they had their own house at the base of the south hill. When I was there. More family house lacrosse team. Bingo. The fucking lacks guys. Oh, worst people in the world there are there are a few crew guys. I like, but I didn't I didn't.
