"Times that I was you know. And you know, there's no there was no cable outlet for ABC news. It was different than working and still capable. They still gonna start a cable outlet and they didn't. So. Yeah. You find gratifying about sports. I've always been a sports fan. Grenache and. Was it wasn't happy earth twenty twenty five years ago, but I've always been a sports fan. But what I love about what I do is that I can be a person in the sports is just kind of like a side thing side part of it. So we get to find out like, I think we have like one of the best jobs that as we get to know Thome, sit don't tell me we get to sit down and deep dive with people and find out about what makes them human and about the same stuff that, you know, makes us interesting. Our families. Our friends are our children, and you get to do that with these athletes and many times, they're you know, the fact that they're an elite athlete is just kind of like a side thing, you know, from all the east sixty stories that we do sometimes sports has a very tangible part of the of the great store of a great story. So that that's kind of what I liked the most about what we do in. This is something that we see your reporting so often it really is about the humanity of the people. We're talking to you know, it's not about the statistics. It's not about just the biography. But it's about what makes them tick what shape them as human beings in sports is really to an extent greater than any other kind of reporting a place where we allow ourselves to dig deeply into people in a way that you don't in general news, you don't in financial reporting, or, you know, maybe entertainment reprint because it's about the personalities, but sports is is different in that respect that it really is about sit down with someone. You interview them for three hours or something like that for these sixty pieces, you're going deep, right? And just finding out the things that you would never think, you know, that they're people just like you are that they had the same problems that you have the same concerns. You know, maybe a child that sick or parent that sick or an illness that they have overcome themselves just challenges that they've overcome in life. Same stuff that that we all deal with and that for me, that's the one thing that. I always try to do is because whenever we go. Do these interviews with people I feel like they're entrusting us with their life, not literally, but they're entrusting story. And so when what despite what might be going on with me, I feel like I need to give them a hundred percent of me. So they're oftentimes where you're distracted or could be distracted. Because you know, you're worried about childcare or worried about someone your family who's sick. Or you worried that you might be sick or whatever I feel like when you're sitting down in that chair across from somebody. They should have all of you. And when they give it to you when they give you all of themselves. That's the most gratifying thing that there is because you know, that they're trusting you and it'll have to but they're trusting speak with Lisa Saulters. She is the Monday night football sideline reporter has been for many years. She is also a host on the network on several shows. She is he sixty correspondent I mean winning e correspondent, and you know, Lisa the work. You do Monday night football. It seemed by so many people, and you know, you're on your on these seventeen eighteen highest rated shows every year on cable television, those eighteen games. I guess. What was it like a going from your reporting on on sportscenter and being seen by certain amount of people? Suddenly, you know, fifteen sixteen seventeen eighteen million people week and being recognized that way it's it's unbelie it really is. I mean, they're an every year. You know, I can I can see the. That my exposure just as increased increases every year, so going from your one when I was I was doing it to you know, now, that's what people see me as your that NFL person that woman on Monday night football. So I never got recognized anywhere before. And now it happens quite a bit. And it's it's it's humbling when and it makes you feel old like you said your old friend it makes you feel. Makes you feel some kind of way when I teared up at the at a restaurant last year when the waiter the server came. Able. The server he wasn't even he wasn't even my server. He was a server for another table he came over. And he said, I don't mean to interrupt, but I just wanted to introduce myself and let you know that I'm also a teacher and one of my students feature Joo as her black history month person for her project. And I thought I didn't know really what to think I was so honored humbled. I just kind of teared up right there at the table thinking like, wow. Like one I guess I'm old if that kid the house like how the kid please say like five. He said, no she had her watch. One player say that to me like that really gets me out like when I think of it. This will be my eight year for Monday night football. So a twenty, you know, last year, somebody with the ravens said, I've been watching you forever. That's true since he was fourteen. You know, he's twenty one now since he was fourteen I've been on football. So when you look at it like that it makes you feel a little long in the tooth. But it's also very humbling to because as you know, a lot of this business is longevity is just hanging around being able to hang around and not our not giving them a reason to not. Exactly. For Mike whenever they hide. So there's something to be said for whatever I'd been doing. It's been good enough to keep more than good enough is one of the very best. There is in the business versatile serious, journalistic it's always a pleasure to be in your company you and thank you for joining us here in the sporting life for have meat. Jeremy always a pleasure to be around you. And the as soon as you know, who else is going to be on the team for Monday night football. You'll let us know I will have asked I'm getting nothing. "This is the sporting life on ESPN radio and the ESPN app. Here's Jeremy chef we're joined by my old friend, your collie one and only Lisa Saulters. Lisa. Thank you for joining us. Thanks for having me care me. Lease is to say, it was a little bit offended when I asked you to be on the show. You weren't. I don't think you necessarily where that I had a radio show. I did know that you had a radio show. I didn't know that. When you said my show, it didn't come to mind, but sporting life worrying like aspirin life. I've I listen to especially traveling in a car, maybe not religiously. But if I'm in a car, and it's on listen to that. I heard the Jim Kelly piece was on you had that on spring life. You'd we did like a couple years ago. The one time. You know, I listen to us at least I should say we we've had this book for some time. And as it happens. We're sitting here in in-studio it's Friday afternoon, March first and Bristol, Connecticut, and we've had this book for some time. But there was some breaking news yesterday regarding your Monday night football colleague, erstwhile colleague, Jason Witten. Where were you when you heard the news Jason is returning to the Dallas Cowboys for sixteenth season? I had gotten a massage and I could make a joke, but I'm not going to. Gotten a massage a real one a normal. I wasn't even I wasn't even and that connection, but go ahead. And you know, I got off the table. And I looked at my phone, and I got all these all these texts from friends saying Jason witness and coming back to yes-men. I'm like, I have no idea. And so I just Google Jason Witten. And you know, there was that he wasn't. And I was like well apparently not news to me about a half hour later Jason called called me, and we talked for a little bit. And he's just he's a really great guy. You know, you just said as he had to follow his heart. You know, you could tell that he missed it last year and even at the Pro Bowl, he just he hung out. With those cowboy pals his like almost the entire time. We'd be like Jason it's time for dinner. We're having dinner, and he'd be off like a little kid playing with his, you know, for routine mates at their table. So, you know, wish him well, it was it was a. Desire. I mean, he's a Greek headed Aries weren't the great tight ends ever in the NFL one of the great Cowboys from my perspective. I get it. I it's just like it's football. It's a rough sport. And he had a great fifteen years, and he has a great job at ESPN. It just seems like look I understand the competitive fire was still burning within him. But it just seemed like whose time to go away. I actually thought that remember November we were in Seattle for Monday night game. And that Sunday night. A story broke Nathan Adam Schefter who broke it that that the Cowboys had been trying to Jason back. Remember that? And so we were kind of all like him. No. No a little stunned. Then like, oh is he leaving? And you know, the ride over to practice in the car together. It was a little awkward until Finally I was like, so what's up? Jason. Are you are you saying you're you what's going on? He's like, it's, you know, just no I'm not I'm not going anywhere. Like this. I gave you know, you guys my word I'm going to be here for the whole season. So I actually thought that that made more sense because the bulk of the season was over. So he really only had to play another month. And the Cowboys were already set up for success. They just may be needed that one extra piece, and I said to him in the car, I was like, hey, you know, our producers like don't rush out the door. Like, I'm not. I'm just saying like you're telling me for four weeks he can work and go to have a chance to Super Bowl. I'd say go go do it. But you know, we're speaker Lisa salters who I've worked with for many years who continues to stellar work at ESPN hosting reporting. From the sidelines doing feature stories doing so many different things. And I don't want to take our whole discussion. Talk about Jason Witten. You transition to sports from news when you came here from ABC news, our sister network. What is it been like working in the world of sports opposed to news for what eighteen nineteen years? Now, it's I've now done sports longer than I did news. I did news for twelve twelve seasons. Say. Going to stay for twelve years. And so now it's been nineteen years doing sports. And you know, what I wish had made the transition sooner. I resisted it for so long thinking that news was, you know, the penultimate like that's the top for journalist is to be at you know, at a network doing news. And boy was I wrong because you know, from the from the moment, I came over to ESPN. Never regretted it wished I had done it sooner. The opportunities have been far far greater than they ever would have been in news, you know, going back to when I left in two thousand there was ABC world news tonight. And that's, you know, twenty two minutes, and we had what seventy correspondents around the world, and you're trying to get on a twenty two minute program. And they would like a life and death struggle getting on the air. Yeah. And they said if you do ten pieces a year, the get on world news tonight. You've had a successful year. You imagine that like ten pieces getting on the air ten times
