"In the new movie book smart to young women about to graduate from high school sped, one last night, trying to catch up on everything. They missed starring Fini Feldstein and Caitlyn Deavere. It's the directing debut of actress Olympia wild because also includes Jessica Williams, Billy board. Jason sedate this, Lisa Kudo, and many more. And we really like it. I'm Stephen Thompson. And I'm Linda Holmes here with me. And Stephen in the studio is Glen, Weldon NPR's arts desk, Glenn. And in our fourth chair, it's always such a pleasure, our friend, a writer in all around. Good pal, Katie Presley. Hi, katie. Howdy. And, you know, we've brought Katie here in part because she like me has some experience being a high school girl, and we are gonna come around to Katie, but I'm going to start actually with Steven. If that's okay, because you told me, how excited, you were about this movie when you saw it tell me about your excitement. Yeah. Yeah, I absolutely loved this movie. This is a coming of age movie. This is a one last big party movie. This is a long night of adventure movie, but above all, this is a friendship movie between these two wonderful characters played by beanie Feldstein and Caitlyn Deavere. There are many ancillary characters this movie is empathetic toward those answer. Larry characters I just wanted to live in this friendship, and I will say, I am deeply deeply hopeful that Livia wild. And this cast find a way to just regroup and get back together a LA the before sunrise movies and just revisit these characters. I just want to swim around in these people's lives every few years. Check in with them when they're in college. Check in with them in young adulthood. Check in with them in middle age. I just wanna revisit these characters these actors, I found this movie so smart and so winning and so fundamentally at its core kind I. I agree with that. Katie. What did you think? Well, so this movie takes place in L A. And I think one of the ways that it functions so well is, as an L A movie my favorites were toward the end, the girls are getting in the car, and they say ways says nineteen we're gonna make it in seven, and that's obviously, like we're very late, and we need to be somewhere in seven, but that is also the most LA like we're going to defy space time. And I'm telling you the streets of L A, occasionally allow you to do that also tidbit which I find scrumptious when they're stuck at the pizza place. One of their many times when you think the adventure is crashing to a halt. Molly makes a desperate phone call. And she just as we're gino's on victory boulevard, and then the phone dies victory boulevard is in north Hollywood. It is four blocks north of the circus liquors, where share Horowitz is held up in. I really like I knew it instantly. She said victory, and I was like. Could not have made that better and the third and final fabulous LA thing is the teacher hilariously accurately named MS fine played by Jessica Williams shows up at this party. And if you've ever been an LA like pulling it out of thin air. If you went to a theater school in Los Angeles, California, and continued to go to school plays for years after you, graduated because you got a false impression of your own importance. Whilst whilst in this program, you will understand why a probably early thirties, teacher will show up at the party to be ad and wonder what she's doing there. Yeah, it's funny when you mention those things that are like the moments when the adventure might be crashing one of the things I love about the way that the film attacks. This kind of out all night story. Is that thanks? Keep happening where something bad happens or something. Weird. Happens and you expect the girls to just be in a panic. And when you see them, they're just laughing, they have the urgency of a we're going to go have an all night party, but they don't have the misery of kind of. Oh my gosh. We can't handle it. So when somebody acts bizarre, and they have to make a run for it when they get outside they're laughing hysterically, which is what you would actually be doing..

"So okay, book smart. There's lots to say I'm gonna do my usual thing and just go around the table. And have you give quick thumbnail reaction? So people know whether to frame, your response to the whole movie, as SIA don't see it. So I'll start with you. Jeffrey, I thought it was quite good. And I say that as sort of a qualified wave. I had heard quite a bit about this movie and I'm a giant sucker for coming of age movies in general, especially like brainy sentimental ones, and then you throw in the gay kids, and it's like almost over for me from the beginning. And I thought this moves lovely, but also surprisingly conventional and kinda shaggy away. I didn't expect which I think is fine. But that's sort of where my base Linus. Yeah, there was so much rapture coming out of Sundance about this. You know, I think if there was one every every festival comes out with its one over hyped movie, and I feel like this was maybe it for the last dance. Over hype. Sounds cynical in mean I just I just mean that it was described as sort of breakthrough in a way that I agree. It didn't quite achieve. What about you Christina? Definitely land on the seat side. I thought it was a very good use of, you know, two hours of my time. I enjoyed it a lot, I, I would put it somewhere between groundbreaking and non groundbreaking. I would say it was like ground skimming lightly going for the ground. Yeah. It was like a light tilling of the soil of coming of age movies. Yeah. I had some, some particular gripes about it, which we'll get into, but definitely a fan of the movie, I think anyone who likes movies about high school and coming of age and, or queer things will like it. Yeah. I was in the midst of writing my review and I had to break it off and running here to talk to you, too. And the first adjective mentioned in my view is buoyant. That's what comes to mind. When I think of this movie, you know, there's just something bubbly and light about it, which, I guess, could be part of we'll get to this. Maybe what you know, one might also critique about it that it doesn't maybe dig as deep as it could about some of the issues that raises, but, but it leaves. Walking out with abound, send your step, which is a really great thing for early summer comedy to do agree. So let's do a quick setup of who we get to know at the beginning of this movie, the two girls, whose friendship forms, the crux of the movie and whose journey the movie ends up being about. Yes. So we have Molly and Amy and they seem to be too, again, very brainy, smart dorky. But, like, not hopelessly so friends who are at the top of their high school, seemingly day of high school as we open their driving school in the very last day. Yes, they seem to have this, like, secret friendship playing was were they kind of move around and weird ways and spend like forty minutes getting into the car doing a little dance? Like I don't know how to describe it for the two friends. I just have to say because it lays down one of my favorite things about this movie, which is the kind of performance of nature of their friendship for each other. You know, there's a there's a way that the two of them are always showing each other also with their, their complement off kind of changes that we always showing each other how much they love each other and how important their friendship. And so, to have them do that, as they're very first introduction to the viewer gives you a real sense of their past together without us having to have some back story of. Here's a flashback of when they were ten or something like that. We should say also that Molly is played by beanie Feldstein, who you might know from lady bird, as the best friend of the Ronin character in that movie. And, and Amy is played by Caitlyn Deavere. I wanted to give you the names because I've heard this depreciation things a little bit weird. And so we saying the record straight, Katie. Deavere Caitlyn Deavere. At least that's how he said it in a video interview. So I'm assuming that she knows especially because apparently Livia while director had the two girls young women live together, room together as part of the hersal process for this movie, which is an unusual rehearsal process, and makes you understand why they seem to have this long running connection that you sort of instantly feel in the movie. Reminds me. I remember wasn't Alfonso Crone who used to make kids in his movies, like spend way too much time right essays about how much they like each other. Like didn't need to what the Harry Potter or something really. Maybe that's why his Harry Potter movie, is, is by far the best directed kids in secret garden to sorry, a little Princess. I wonder if he didn't get to know each other as well. Mike Lee is another director, the English socialist record. He does. He does literally live together but he has long rehearsal processes, where they all just sort of come to a house in the country and talk through the script together. And I think that there was a lot of improvisation in this movie as well. So Stein has said that she contributed. I want, I know she said she contributed as early on in the movie when her friend, Amy who's gay and that stabbed early in the movie that she came out two years ago that she tells her your first crush ever was the little white cat in the aristocrats and apparently Elstein made that lineup on the spot and Caitlyn Deavere laugh so hard that they had to keep retake. That's so good. I loved that line because we recently had an episode on outward, which is the LGBTQ podcasts that I co host here at slate where we talked about our so-called roots of our queer identity and for a lot of people cartoon characters were sort of their first foray into thinking a same gender person was super attractive. So there were little moments like that, that immediately at the beginning of the film, made me feel like oh, they're taking, they, they have a little bit of insight into what it's like to actually be queer. And this isn't just going to be some sort of gimmick to make this movie stand out from every other high school movie there is out there and the intimacy between the two female characters to where it's sort of like a, I've heard a called a platonic romantic relationship. These kinds of very, very close female friendships that never really crossed the line into anything sexual, but is like. Extraordinarily intimate. That was one of the most fun parts of the film, for me, like right from the very start that becomes a joke in the movie as well, in that Amy's. Parents are convinced that they are having a romantic because they know their daughters gay. And they know she hangs out with another girl all the time. So they jump to that conclusion and the two girls kind of play on that manipulate the parents of it into letting them go out for a while night together on the pretext that they're spending the night. There's so many like lovely like seems like the kids are largely unknown. Some of them like you said, there's they have passed credits lady bird, but a lot of the kids, I feel like our sort of put out of the third are quite distinctive and I'll have big parts, but the parents are played by people like Lisa Kudo, who puts the father. Again, we'll forte. Yeah, that's right forte. And then today Kaz being the spouse of Libya, while also in the Jason today because in the movie as a principal Williams, just Cohen's. Cams delightful adult cast of like debentures. I think I mean you just, you know, that Livia wild has a very nice Rolodex of friends who are willing to come in appear in her her debut and one note to about the casting, and I think you're really right? That there are a lot of great unknown faces, especially in the crowd at school. The whole cast of high school kids, the casting director for this movie was also Jones who also cast super bad. And she cast the office the American office, and she cast freaks and geeks, which I thought was really notable. Particularly given you know what a pool of young at the time on known talent that was let's talk about the school when they get to the school after their little happy to see you dance. What, what is the school like that they're arriving at? And this is where I start to have some questions about the texture of this movie, the various military of the world that they're going into. So it's the last day of school, and what kind of space is their school? This is very much in the realm of like the high school. I wish I had, but doesn't actually exist kind of movie where kids are scape. Boarding down the steps. Everyone's like throwing paper airplanes and silly string and confetti and it seems like there are very specific like clicks in play as there would be at any high school. There's the theater kids and sort of the hot jocks and their, you know, counterparts, the hot girl jocks or whatever the stone or kids, the skateboarders nerds, but everyone kind of gets along like it seemed to me, like there would be a little bit more space between or that the dorks like the Molly and Amy characters would be a little bit less self assured and a little bit less cool than they were. Did you guys get that sense at all? Yeah, I kind of wondered, I hate to say this about such sweet buoyant movies. I was just saying, but, like, where's the cruelty? I mean, they're sort of outcasts Molly and Amy and I don't want to see them suffer by any means. But it's there's not really a sense that there's a super deep bottom to their into their outcast status at school. Everybody more or less seems to be pretty tolerant and accepting and Sweden and good looking. And I mean, huge question that popped to mind for me almost immediately, as a private school, or public school. And that's never astonished All at all. that gets that what animates the movies, like central sort of conflict, which, is that at some point. So Molly is going to Yale the following year. I didn't quite gather. Whereas Amy going after after after time got ear spoiler. I I guess. guess. But it's what we kind of find out is that at some point, there is a little bit of meanness. And somebody says something about how Molly I don't know they're having a conversation about how bad -able she is or something along those lines, and she over hears it, and she class back at them by saying something along the lines of. Yeah. Well, I'm going to Yale and you guys are gonna peak here or something, and they say, no, we're going to two and it seems like every kid is either going to yell are very, very good school. And that's what animates them to kind of act out and cut loose, which becomes sort of the threat that on the movie follows. But it says a lot about the high school to seems like every single one of these kids is going to incredibly good school, and or going to, like, create a nonprofit and Africa for a year, I wanted to know the private versus public distinction. And also, I mean, given as you say that the entire action of the movie, the idea that the two girls decide to go out and have this wild radio party night, because they discover that everybody got into a great school is why, why did even even at a sort of top-flight private school. They would still be some distinction, right? Between. In the kids, who studied hard and the kids, who didn't I kept exp- expecting. Maybe Jessica Williams as the teacher, or Jason's, the principal to pop up and say, you know, I don't know, give us some sort of explainer why whether you are a party all night, jock or a super brain, you would get the same grades and have the same results at the school. I guess, the dumb jock does say that he's going to Georgetown, which is not exactly like the most impossible to get into school. I know I know. And I went to George I know that I went to throw I went to the Michigan. I'm not saying that I'm not being the latest year. All I'm saying is that like the movie like that's the movies version of like going to also around school. Like it's like that, that's lowest. Degree -ality back. It was really disappointed. I guess. Yeah. I like right from very beginning this movie I expected it to hit me kind of harder to feel like brutally dragged by it because there was a part of me that felt like I defied with Molly and Amy even though I didn't go to Yale I went to, you know, scummy Georgetown, but. The idea of like I couldn't wait to get out of high school. I had this big fancy future planned. I thought it was so much better than all these other kids who didn't care about learning only cared about partying who weren't interested in intellectual pursuits and bettering themselves in the world and only cared about drinking and we're probably going to stay New Hampshire for the rest of their lives. And in fact, when she talks about, you know, Molly as the class president, and she talks about, she's the one who does all the real work vice president is this hot guy, Nick, who is very popular, but total doofus can't really perform the duties of the office. That's almost the exact. Like a mirror image of what happened at my high school, where the, the class officers were like maybe one person who actually had their shit together and then everyone else. We're just very popular jocks who were so incompetent at their jobs that we didn't even have a five year, high school reunion, because they were supposed to be the ones planning it, and they couldn't bring themselves to actually get together in time. So right from that moment, I was like, oh, dang, I'm about to find myself dragged by this movie..

"Welcome back to bulls. I'm happy to see you. Thank you for having me, an congratulations on this show. I am just over the moon about how much I love it. I just think it's so great. Thank you, were you scared to make television show. Of course. I was I'm scared of everything. What I mean? Like I like this'll be a catastrophe. The biggest failure yet. At least I am such a fan of your comics. And I'm such a fan of your work on Jack horsemen as well. It's my favorite part of a great show. And, but that said, you're comics are more impressionistic than they are narrative, they're not not narrative, but they, you know, timelines are loose. Lists are incorporated. Frequently it's list. And I thought, you know, Lisa's been working on a TV show for a long time. They're also like wild. They're like, wildly. There's just a lot of ideas going different places. Yeah. It's a little untethered and I reality, I thought is how does this. We come a sitcom. Yeah. That was my thought I was worried that was that was why it took so long to develop the show because I was talking about the show ideas with Rafael, and we kind of, wanted it to resemble my comic books, but it was sort of hard to make a show that did that it was going to be kind of like a one woman anthropology, but then I just kept coming back to these characters of to birdie and honestly the shows I like to watch our sitcoms. So I was just like maybe I should learn how to make one kind of sitcoms do you like to watch? I mean I love friends. I've watched it so many times. Just so comforting. Is that just because it like relates to your adolescence when it was on television, perhaps? Yeah, there's a little bit of nostalgia there. I don't know. I just think the characters are really well defined and I don't know. It's just comforting her hate, France, that's fair. That's probably fair. I'm not saying it to attack you, I'm just confessing it. I don't feel attack. I really like Lisa Kudo. I actually I think that's one all of the cast members of friends do a great job. She lease occurs. Absolutely. The best one Phoebe is the best character. She deserves so much better on that show. Did you imagine when you were a kid or teen that friends was what adulthood might be like, I don't know. Because like I wonder sometimes if I thought, like Seinfeld, or News Radio or the shows that I left when I was in, I L shears so loved NewsRadio so much to watch. Cheers with my dad, and like cheers. Actually is very sad show. Here's this too sad for me. Newsradio does feel like what adulthood is like. Newsradio. Feels very accurate just once a year you're in space for no reason. Yes. We all have a Matthew in our lives. Yeah. Very relatable. So when you were developing the show into, you know, when you were creating your own sitcom, and you started with the idea that it would be as loose as your comics, or at least reflect the spirit of your comics..

There was I got the script about four years ago, actually, and it had been books are had existed since two thousand nine I fell in love with it immediately. I think for being a young woman this opportunity doesn't come around too often because I feel like there's been a misconception about women being funny. And so we're never given this opportunity, and that's the. The thing that struck me first and then two years later Livia was attached to direct it. And I'm like, oh my God. What a better. I mean, it was just like so great. And then she knew immediately that she wanted to hire beanie. And then here she is. I had read the script like three years ago and reading initially for a character that no longer exists in the film, even and I was so taken with with the concept and film was giving space for two women that were best friends to be that smart that engaged that brilliant 'em. So funny, and I knew I wanted to be part of it in any way. I couldn't I'm gonna live. You came on. We had lunch. And she was like I while. I was like I remember this is insane. She was like I want you to play Mali, and I was I was so honored. And I knew that Caitlin was attached. And I'm such a fan of hers. I think you one of the most exceptional actress is so excited genuinely so excited to get to collaborate with her, but it was a no brainer. I think for both of us you read those characters and how much fun that gets have and how fresh and multi-dimensional all of the characters in the film are then alluvial year. And you know, there's a really great about obviously the characters and the backdrop being high school, and it is a fresh take on some of the characters that we almost become caricatures when it comes to the high school party film. But in this case, this film, was ascended the beginning is really about your friendship, and did you feel that from the script was that something like this is really less about a party comedy? If you will and more about the two of us original. That was always the story was there beautiful friendship. But I think Livia did want to make it about the on samba at the end of the day. But it is such a beautiful story. About these two girls who just love each other so much. So I definitely knew that that was if that's always there and Katie Silverman writer as an incredible genius woman. I mean, I've never met someone as smart as her. She is a genius. And everything was so on page and so clear for us day one. Really, I think once the four of us realized that ultimately book smart is still funny. And it's so real, and it's still crazy. But it's also kind of a break-up movie it's about how to best friends have to part because high school's ending. And I think that's so relatable. I mean, most of us go to high school and most of us have those those really really deep friendships at that time. And so it is really a relationship movie. There's so much fun in it. But it's truly about the genuine connection these two girls have and the emotion because there's there's something about the chemistry that you have both on screen that draws you in and really makes its emotional win. When you go through the break up. And so the question is how. Do you as actors, how do you how do you do that as not necessarily best friends from high school? How do you portray that? You know, I always think that the best comedies have a lot of heart to them. And I think book smart is exactly that it will make you laugh until UP your pants, and then it'll make you cry. I think that's what's so powerful about friendships is that that fight is so heartbreaking it almost feels worse than a romantic a fight with a romantic partner. So I mean, we didn't for our fight. Specifically me beanie. We didn't talk guess haven't. We haven't had a fight yet. But we didn't we didn't talk the whole day. It was one of those rare days because basically we're together on screen the entire film, which is so fun. But this was like literally think one of the two days that we had different start times in the morning or in the evening, actually, because we thought most movie all night. So Caitlin was in first, and we live together while we were shooting the film prepping or her thing, and then shooting the film, so she left in earlier than I did. And we didn't speak to be able to see your speak to each other that whole day. And the fight was the only seen that we didn't run together rehearse together before we actually filmed it because we knew there be this of raw quality to it. If we kind of just had their hurt each other save line and Libya had told us that she wanted to try an attempt to get it done in one take. And then if we couldn't she would obviously set it up differently. But we got it done in one take we did this scene. That's in the film is the second take we did. And then we did four takes of it. But really we. Got it on the on the second to have a scene between two people in one shot. And it's such a a raw part of the film that I think that makes the makes the humor land even better because you're actually invested in these girls, you really genuinely invested in them. And so that can sort of take it to a super comedic space or a super like emotional space for both of you being in in that situation where you were running it, and you weren't rehearsing it beforehand. There is Ron is to it the approach to that as as actresses as people who really want to capture that emotion. How do you go about that? Are you nervous about it? The fact that you guys have become so close that the characters in his film are funny, and they're continually lovey. Or is it just script? And you're like, okay, I'm gonna do some. I think because we had gotten so close. I was less concerned about getting their emotionally. Yeah. I feel like when you have a deeper connection with someone. It's easier to act genuinely be upset. So like when we shot the scene. I was genuinely sad. I was crying. I think also we had the benefit of actually doing what they the girls in the film are doing which is that we were fighting for the first time we were seeing what the other person like looks like satellite felt like in those emotions which neither of us as Caitlyn and Vini ever experienced, but neither of Mali and Amy. This is their first fight. And so I think would alleviate does cinematic Lee with dropping out our dialogue. So halfway through the fight scene. You stop hearing what the girls are saying. And you just see them screaming at each other. And a you always talked to us about how when you're fighting. Sometimes you don't even know what you're saying. But you're committing to it so hard because you're like in that space of fighting, and you can't catch your emotions and. And I think that's so so humanly captured in the film, and we both love that scene so much it was, but it was really scary to shoot in front of a lot of background actors and the rest of our casts and felt very boulder. Yeah. Yeah. The movie book smart is out this week in studio tonight on extension seven twenty beanie Feldstein and Caitlyn diva. What we'll do. We'll take a quick break. We'll come back continue the conversation here about the movie book. Smart stay with us. The.

"Chandler number four, just because everyone loves Chandler in like, he's one of those like super normally picks wherever, but he's so sarcastic. It's so funny like, yeah, that was super Graham breaking in nineteen eighty two or whatever, and not funny anymore. In three, I got Joey, and he is an idiot and I hate his catchphrase a lot, but he's a lovable oaf and I didn't know the part that tro just mentioned earlier, but that would if I knew beforehand boosted him up a bit and then two in one, I've Rachel Monica. I respect my queens for putting up with everyone else on this list stupidity and I know Monaco's chef to. That's pretty cool, and I didn't know that Rachel left got left at the altar left someone at the altar, but that's pretty bad s and I respect the shit out of that. So yeah, I got Ross, Phoebe, Chandler, Joey, Rachel, Monica, but you guys told me if that's a good list. Now I can't troll. You have some comments. I think they're all good list. I think it goes back to personal. Reference like a character, like Phoebe. I could see some people really liking Phoebe because Lisa Kudo as an actress is is one of my favorite friends actors. Okay. I am on the Lisa Kudo train. They just the character was just very random and I don't like that really random style of like smelly cat humor. I agree a little bit with Chandler being overrated. He was very over the top. They Melody's character out a little bit later seasons, and I like Rachel and Monica, both the glue that held the friend group together. Yeah, yeah, that is very true. And that's one of the reasons in the later seasons of there was a plot point where Joey and Rachel had a thing together and it was very poorly received because it was so forced. I also don't like the fact that Ross's snivelling stupid Wani but was destined for Rachel. She deserves more than Ross. Honestly, she deserves better than Ross, so I would have rather seen Rachel, Joe, even though the plot line was forced and didn't feel right by the way. What a note that on the TV above me right now, there's a new NBC doctor show coming out where the main character is Ryan episode who plays Tom in the blacklist. Also he was in black klansman to Tom from blacklists by clansman great points. Very good points. Trill. We'll see you save on my list here. Number six for me is Monica is that's she's one that noise the most a more often than not Nordby Monica in in friends. Number five. We all have Rawson similar spots. I have Ross five can get him last tro. I have met five as well. Number four, Rachel. I think Rachel probably could have been last for me actually, really super annoying, super knowing..

Riot and there was a basketball player Marvin Barnes and he was not a. Nice person oh okay okay go figure He for whatever reason. Wouldn't, play. By. The rules He decided to rob a store in his neighborhood So the owner. Of the store, knew him because it's his neighborhood, it's this neighborhood the guys like. Six foot ten which narrows down who could be so Marvin Barnes has a, gun and give me all your money And the clerk said Marvin I know. That you under the mask you don't have to do this, if you need, money out give you money but you don't have to pull a, gun and caused a robbery maybe get involved with the police and all the things. That come along with that, and Marvin Barnes was in having any of it so Marvin Barnes finally said To the owner It ain't me Now you, can imagine Karen Wayne's voice. Telling this story Was? "And enough sleep may happier than having more money the ladies on the view said no our country are they felt that money didn't they really happy your did i really but either ain't here but those are people all make good money well but so but like maybe they didn't know grow up with money i don't join our lg ending money and all they were up with money yeah people were tired for every was the only agreed that sex and say yes of course money helps not having money problems is a bigger problem than not getting enough sleep for having enough stocks have you don't have it so that would be hard yes okay now this one i i love it okay i love it when celebrity schrafft's no longer kirk for celebrities and tell us crap 'cause they'd love to dash they lie bears will leave they don't sign nondisclosures but apparently the schrafft's stone and my theory is that we want more celebrity chefs dishing so this is where pal droves former per share chef whose court for a lot of people her name is kate math luhn in her well you know yesterday we just lightly reported on the fact that you know basically gwyneth and gridiron didn't need anything the nothing now dairy no sugar no anything's she hearst four miranda care curve winter as married to orlando home and they liked her light curries and chicken salads and uh they were they walk the walk when it comes to like this is what we like and then that's actually what they like this where we don't like not people who said we'd like this and then didn't like it quite and she said courtney cox was slightly was kind of difficult because courtney would only hire her when she was having dinner parties for sixty people i love that and she tell her about it the morning off yeah and she said it all went awry with courtney cox the last time she worked with a wrench put olive oil instead of tequila in a margherita i think that's when according to got his legs last night with lisa kudo or she was lap and and she has no injectable interface because member she let it all go yeah shouldn't gray was she needed to yeah.
