"Most interesting John Ferrell getting ready for his 9 o'clock hour, Lisa Abraham Wentz is off today, and of course we have a national moment with a shutdown of the FAA planes grounded across America, but a relatively good stream of good news over the last number of minutes. We're monitoring the major communication that we've seen from FAA and that is Twitter 14 minutes ago is the last comment that we saw the FAA making progress in restoring the N OAM NO2 a.m. rather. They're monitoring system for planes in the sky departures resuming at Newark and Atlanta due to air traffic congestion in these areas they expect is purchased to resume at 9 a.m. and that's maybe a little bit different than the 9 30 tone that we had a half an hour ago. This story is very active will interrupt to bring you an update on this international flights landing in the United States. Futures up 13 down futures up 87, nice lift to the market. I'm seeing it with a further accommodative policy. And now we need to blend in here the economics with the markets and we can do that with Marina urushi. U.S. economist at T Rowe price and she has lived at the London school of economics. When you're there, graduate or undergraduate, you have to observe the Phillips machine, which is a strange linkage of employment with inflation going back just after World War II. Now Wisconsin and gorgeous museum in London. Lorena, you're quality here. Is the Phillips curve still in place for chairman Powell? That tradeoff between inflation and the U.S. labor market is always going to be in place. Sometimes statistical relationships can go upside down. But I think that link between the tightness of the labor market and how that affects consumer prices. It's there. And I think we're seeing that because throughout last year, we had an extreme tightness in U.S. labor markets, a lot of vacancies, not enough workers to fill those jobs and we saw how that affected consumer prices. Are you advising portfolio managers at T Rowe price that finally the employment market will break that we will see higher unemployment rate? I think that's down the line for the U.S. economy, but not just yet. And I'm observing a very interesting dynamic right now. We're real conflict between the ISM and survey data and the PMIs that say our recession is imminent. And then the labor market that is pointing to a deceleration, but not a dramatic one and saying the recession dynamics may set in place in the U.S., but that's going to be further down the line. And really what I'm watching in U.S. labor market data right now, it's temporary health. That's a very, very cyclical component of the U.S. labor market. Let's say the release valve for employers demand is slowing. That's the first workers to be let go. And that has already started to cool. And I think that's a step in the right direction. If we're worried about tightness in U.S. labor market. If you're in a buy side shop, managing major institutional money, we've seen here within the punditry of financial media, this shift from recession doom and gloom to a little in 6 8 ten days the opening of a China and accommodation. How do you handle that shift advising people running such stodgy money? Well, I think if you are a big institutional investor, you can not, you have to keep your eye on the trend and have conviction about where you see the economy going in three 6 12 months. And the way we're seeing things right now, when I look at consensus, I see pricing of a Goldilocks scenario. Markets are expecting a 50 basis point cut from the fed by the end of this year. I don't think that's telling us that the market has strong conviction in a recession because this is not how the fed will react and recession. So when I'm thinking about the consensus picture, I think perhaps for the end of 2023, risk actually are to the downside to the consensus. And then the key is the timing. And for me, the timing, timing, U.S. recession is always about the consumer and the labor market. What is the value of inflation right now? We have what I've been joking super core inflation Thursday at tomorrow. We're down to the silliness of parsing out parts of inflation, even chairman Powell, has brought up services ex this X that do you buy it or do you look at the aggregate numbers? Well, I'm all about disaggregating. I grew up creating my inflation forecast at the very detailed data. I think and level. I think that matters a lot for the near term. And I buy this story because we have to understand some inflation components are very idiosyncratic. And some of them have a lot of inertia like rent and shelter overall. So for instance, I think it's very important to look at core services, ex shelter. That's down to 1%, three month annualized from a peak of 13% last summer. So I think inflation momentum is slowing. It's just that we need to see this on a more sustained basis. And for the fed that has been burned so badly with a transitory story, I think it makes so much sense to be hawkish for a while. But I think when they do make the dovish pivot, it's going to be very quick. This is something folks. And I'm going to have to continue with this because I'm with burina disaggregated inflation and get yelled at by any number of people that should be one big aggregate statistic. You reach you with us at T Rowe price, we continue to monitor the airplanes on the ground across America right now, no news from the federal aviation administration here 16 minutes ago is what we see in the latest tweet, if you will, the communication from the FAA 9 30 was a number bandied about even an hour ago, we shift that to 9 o'clock with some form of departures in Atlanta and at Newark just to the west of New York City in New Jersey. We continue with blurring right now. Lorena, I love the idea of disaggregating inflation, but can you disaggregate housing? Can you repeat that question for me? I'm sorry. Oh, I'm sorry. We're going to leave Matt, would you want to, okay, we're going to continue with Lorena right now. Lorena, can you take housing out of the inflation dynamic? Is a separate pandemic beast?

"Bear market rally and I'm going to say that it's a bear market rally rather than a full on rally This is Bloomberg surveillance with Tom Keene Jonathan Ferrell and Lisa Abraham Alex Good morning everyone Jonathan farrow Alisa ramis and Tom keen on a most important consequential day for global Wall Street On inflation myth you Miller in for John farrow this morning that is a good and beautiful thing Red and green on the screen but Lisa look at the sell off in equities yesterday in preparation for 90 minutes from now In preparation for higher short term yields period full stop whether it's in the United States whether it's in Europe the trajectory is up It doesn't seem like there is anything to create a pause And today's data may just confirm that time Legit curve flattening and there are some people writing about new curve inversion where the two year yield that fed yield is above the ten year yield yesterday but Lisa yesterday with a vengeance off week Euro we saw a Kerr flattening And we continue to see it this morning You're seeing the ongoing inversion in a deeper inversion the 5 ten spread the 7 ten spread I'm not going to bore you with different numbers The idea here is no I do it every day Why stop now It's an inflation report Things are incredibly important How about that auction yesterday It was actually really important And I'll tell you how this links into inflation The hotter inflation is now And the more it persists what it means is people projecting slower growth in a harder landing And that is what we saw with bids coming in for 30 year bonds People want duration in a pinch And that is what we're seeing Tom as people project forward not only the fed but inflation itself and what that does to economic growth The only auction Miller cares about is when he's out there with ten gazillion used cars looking for a barracuda slant 6 from another time in place Miller used cars maybe they're ebbing other things aren't in inflation Yeah first of all I would give an arm for a cuda for sure But look people talk about inflation and they talk about inventories a lot lately Kathy wood said we should be more worried about deflation than inflation although of course she's seen the biggest outflows of any ETF This year any family of ETFs at least We're still seeing extreme shortages and anything that needs chips and anything that needs commodity inputs like cars like washing machines So household a durable goods and vehicles are still aren't on the lot I want to exit now to a vignette on international relations into the weekend Some of the mysteries for Europe in this war in Ukraine mister Putin after the bank of Russia this morning moved rates back to a pre war level is meeting with the new leadership of Turkmenistan This is very very important and far out on his southern and eastern front as well but it gives all and particularly for those of you on Bloomberg radio and update on the concerns about mister Putin's health People are looking at this daily certainly weekly as they gauge the health of mister Putin we simply give you the images without comment Lisa I think we've got to get to a morning brief It has got a center around the say 30 report Yeah well let's get a sense first of what's going on in markets We can see a decline across the board earlier in the morning We saw a bifurcation between the S&P and NASDAQ that is persisting which is interesting given the safe haven Look at the trade that we are seeing Euro continuing to depreciate This is fascinating to your point earlier Tom It is now below a one O 6 handle We have a one O 5 handle on the Euro I sound like I'm auctioning it off This is the issue the ECB came out yesterday What some people viewed as a hawkish message not translating as such today as we expect that hot number perhaps from inflation And then ten year yields lower interesting because the short term yield is higher that curve flattening Really the key point today is going to be 8 30 a.m. as we've been talking about the key data point of the week possibly the month and beyond How much do we see a deceleration in inflation when you strip away energy when you strip away food Do we see the expected decline from 6.2% to 5.9% in May as people were expecting Does this matter And this is where I really think perhaps the bigger number will come into play Real wages have declined deeper and deeper into negative territory Basically the American budget is declining When you adjust it for inflation at a dramatic pace the wages are not keeping pace with inflation And that's leading to a deterioration in consumer sentiment 10 a.m. we get that number University of Michigan may U.S. consumer sentiment survey data comes out We have seen it fall to the weakest going back to 2011 The expectation is for it to continue in this way And at one 45 p.m. President Biden will attempt to address the concerns that people are feeling addressing supply chain issues at the port of Los Angeles How much can he do Tom Given the concerns and given some of the exogenous factors whether it's China or whether it's Russia's war in Ukraine Late in this hour as he wakes up early early in Los Angeles Ed ludlow will join us traveling with the president Now is a wonderful time to speak to Jane foley with rob a bank and with all their commercial fares in business She is their head of foreign exchange strategy I've got to go to the pair relationship Jane and the partial differentials now in the last 24 hours is the dollar stronger or the Euro weaker You know what I think we've got a weaker Euro here and on that side you might think well that's a bit straight into the ECB We're very very clear much clearer than normal in their hawkish message telling us they're going to hike interest rates by 25 basis points in July leaving that door wide open for 50 basis points move in September But I think the message here is what they didn't say And of course there's a new word associated with Europe and the ECB now and that's fragmentation We have had press reports that during the last few days which said that ECB would give us some clearer messages about what they would do to stop those peripheral spreads Bond spreads one deal spreads from widening and they did not In fact look at quite evasive that there wasn't much in that And so the message was you know what They're going to carry on hiking and actually they're not prepared to do an awful lot to stop those spreads widening And that is a concern for investors That's a concern about the outlook for the European project And until we have more message on that front.

"Bloomberg surveillance from London Lisa Abraham was in Tom king Jonathan farrow There's been a pharaoh sighting We're pleased to report something about A.C. Milan I have no idea what that means Scheduled Tuesday in America Yes we do have Monday off But Bloomberg of course will be monitoring global news on the American Memorial Day There is today and on a Friday you sort of go Friday really There is a ton of American economic data that's beginning to come out looking at things like retail inventories far more the spending the income and the PCE deflator as well Here is in New York Michael McKee good morning I'm good morning Lisa Let's talk about the deflators first because that's the number everybody cares about It's the fed's target for inflation The PCE deflator the headline number comes in at up to tenths of percent That's significantly down from 9 tenths The prior month And that makes a year over year headline number 6.3% The core which a lot of people are following because they think the fed is going to be much more interested in that given what is driving inflation these days Core up three tenths same as last month but that pushes us down into a four handle 4.9% for the PCE core That's down from 5.2% The prior month So the inflation numbers show a little bit of improvement personal income up four tenths on the month personal spending up 9 tenths on the month Both of those ticked down from where they were in March but still healthy numbers real personal spending this is interesting Up 7 tenths of a percent it was up only two tenths Yeah Last month and of course the issue there is that you have to subtract inflation from the spending numbers And it looks like spending was reasonably strong even without that And then the other number that's out this morning is also good news The advanced good trades balance for April came in at 105 billion It was a 125 point billion last month And of course trade subtracts from GDP was a big hit to GDP last month because the trade balance had deteriorated to a record low And so we see some improvement there Still big but mathematically it will help Michael these are fascinating data and I think we're going to see a real churn in the market with a two year yield giving me a fractional lift right now but I would really stay tuned folks to see what those yield dynamics do Michael I want you to do what you do best which is take the inflation data of mister Powell's PCE deflator and bring it right over to what we see at 10 o'clock New York time with the one year in the 5 to ten year University of Michigan guesstimates on inflation How does a pro like you link those two together Well what's been interesting It's been interesting time in the last couple of weeks we have seen inflation break evens fall in on Wall Street 5 and ten year numbers coming down as the market seems to accept the fact that the fed can get inflation under control So we're watching to see where the consumer is at this point The New York puts out a survey of consumer expectations for inflation that found the long term three to 5 years was 3% So consumers were pretty optimistic about inflation coming down as well We'll see if that gets confirmed by the University of Michigan numbers In all those numbers in McKee's expert at this folks I will make pretending I'm doing it I'm going to suggest 5.2% down to 4.9% on the PC core deflate or year over year at least it gets my attention with an equity lift Futures up 13 down futures up 30 continue to look at the markets Michael McKee thank you so much We now synthesize to the global economy and do this with Neil sharing with always a complex readable note from capital economics joining us in our London studios and the triangle the tripod that you're looking at of global economics what interests me is you study of real wages And what I find fascinating in the United States is on an X axis the area under this collapse in the real wage Boy it's getting long The integrand of negative real wages is really getting substantial How does that affect behavior into next year We've got a flavor of that in the data that's just come out right We've had personal consumption growing .9 but incomes grow much less than personal consumption Consumers are dipping into their savings and that's what's sustaining the health of consumption in the U.S. Now you're right that there's been an erosion of real wages in the U.S. and I think that's going to start to weigh on demand as we head into next year You combine that with what the fed's doing rate sensitive sex is housing I think it's going to slow I don't think necessarily be a recession though The strength of the consumer data that we have this morning I think is testament to that If you're looking for a recession and you're concerned about squeezes in real incomes then here in Europe is the place to look The terms of trade shock that Europe has experienced is an order of magnitude greater than that that the U.S. has experienced as energy prices of search and that is hitting consumers here in Europe Before we get to Europe but I do want to follow on with that I'd love to get your sense of what it does when people see real negative wages right Because we talk about how the consumer continues to spend in the United States and we see that with this data coming faster than expected in the prior month Does it matter that they're earning even less on an inflation adjusted basis Or do they just have so much cash in their savings And frankly the availability of credit to go out and buy whatever they want that doesn't matter But again the interesting thing is that different story in the U.S. compared with the Eurozone in the U.S. is a much larger fiscal stimulus stimulus checks landing three times in the U.S..
