The Legend of the Sphinx
"Anyone who went through in egyptology phase probably knows the sphinx. A winged lion with the head of a human while popular tradition suggests that sphinxes are always feminine. That's not necessarily the case. The egyptian great sphinx of giza reportedly represented the old kingdom pharaoh. Qafra lion and human composite creatures can be found in legends from all over the african and asian continents. So while they're generally wise and protective they come in quite a few different variations. In fact it's not until the greeks imported the egyptian version of the sphinx into their own legends. That the creature picked up its most notorious characteristic. Love of tricks and riddles. If you can solve one of its puzzles you might not be devoured own. Mount olympus gates had been barred to fix the sphinx for as long as she existed creatures like her were deemed too inconsequential to find a home here. The gods viewed her as little more than a conquest for their half human children so when fixed received a scroll of summons she considered not going a belated invitation was worse than no invitation at all plus the gods were probably just calling her because they were angry. She had eaten the goddess artemis sacred deer. Still curiosity had a way of wriggling under her skin. Fixed couldn't resist the chance to see the gods home. She glided between the ivory gates on her white wings. Her golden for glinting in the sun. She loved the breeze and the smell of fresh fruit and wine in the air. She dipped her head to enter the palace of olympus and marveled at the white marble columns that held up the stone. Roof above fix would have been happy to call olympics home. Were it not. For the god's that infested it
Facing Bias in Facial Recognition Technology
"Joy willem. Weenie is a researcher at the mit media. Lab who pioneered research into the bias. That's built into artificial intelligence and facial recognition and the way she came to this work is almost a little too on the nose as a graduate student at mit she created a muir that would project aspirational images onto her face. Like a lion or serena williams but the facial recognition software. She installed wouldn't work on her black face until she literally put on a white mask will. I'm we need is featured in a documentary called colleague bias now streaming on net flicks. She told us about one scene. Where facial recognition tech with installed in an apartment complex in brownsville in brooklyn. We actually had a tennis association. Reach out to us to say look. There's this landlord. They're installing the system using facial recognition as an entry mechanism. The tenants do not want this. Can you support us. Can you help us understand. A bit of the technology and also limitations and what i found was the tenants they already had it and it was a question not just about the performance of these technologies. You just it seemed like every group where we've seen struggle that was the group and that was predominant in that building but it was also a question of agency and control to actually even have a voice and choice to say. Is this a system that we want. you know. i feel like there's this kind of double whammy with this technology. Which is that. There's bias built in and because it is fundamentally good for use in surveillance and punishment it feels like it's almost disproportionately being used in communities where it is least likely to be effective or to cosimo's problem. Frankly absolutely here were saying. Is that if it doesn't work in terms of the technical aspect you get misidentification 's you get false arrest and so forth but even if it does work you can still optimize these systems. as tools of oppression so putting in surveillance tolls into the hands of police departments where we see time and time again. The criminalization of communities of color is not going to improve the situation. It just automates. What has already been going
Receivers to Target in the Late Rounds of your Dynasty Rookie Draft - burst 07
"Fitzpatrick. Let's see if we agree on this next player. I'm a. I'm a little higher on this guy too. So it's a mad rod- saint brown from the lions usc. Yeah he's a player. I like them a committee. He's very similar in a situation fitzpatrick you know he's gonna come in And i mean there's really not much competition for them. You know pyramid tirol williams. Yeah and i liked terra. Williams pyramids pray. He's okay you know. Those guys might actually be more talented than a Brown but they're also. Canada beat up players through their careers. And i don't really expect neither one of them to hold up you know. And it wouldn't be shocked if They're also very different. Style player that ahmad brad. I think my bracket can be a good underneath slide guy and whereas i i don't typically like sly guys you know where we were talking about driving with the second round when you're talking about getting guy the third round of a rookie draft you know that's cool because these guys are good. Probably get on the field and You know i like him. I just don't know what his long term value is. Because i would assume that the detroit lions are going to upgrade their their wide receiver positions at some point. One of the things that saint has gone for him as he has. More of a complete body work in college. Played six games. Forty one receptions for four hundred seventy eight yards seven touchdowns pretty good for six games. Last season seventy seven receptions thousand forty two yards six touchdowns season before that as a freshman sixty receptions seven hundred fifty yards and three touchdowns. So i was pretty impressed with his stats. So for that reason. I like him. But as cow saying am i gonna adjust him over bateman more those allies more either. The moore's no. I'm not gonna drop them over that but if he falls i will take a look at him because i think the saints brown is stepping into a situation that scrape for him and this is what i. This is what. I come back to saint bad and i. I know that these two receivers aren't necessarily the most similar by keep coming back to kenny. Golladay when he first went till lines. We'll see third fourth round pick. Also he came down where there was a genuine Where there was opportunity for him to be the number one receiver in the And he took advantage of that. That opportunity and same opportunity has been presented to saint brown. I don't think this same brown is as talented as golladay. But i think that that is close to the ceiling. Distinct brown house. That would which is why. I'm high him and in that aspect but low but there's also an equally as likely chance that saint brown is just never going to be able to send to wide receiver one

Sadie Hoagland Discusses Her New Book, "Strange Children"
"There. How are you today. I'm excited to be here. Thank you so much for having me. I'll thank you for coming autumn so excited to talk with you. So can you tell me about your writing. Sure so i think of my rating as a bit dark a bit funny at times. I think i'm very interested in voice. So i tend to use a lot of first person though i've definitely expanded in the last couple of years to use more third person i am very interested in language in sentence level writings. So that's actually for me. One of the primary reasons i write and story is sort of secondary. So i'm interested in story and structure and all that but i love just like reading a good sentence in that so that i think translates into my rating. I really like spending some time. Crafting sentences that that maybe kind of mixed up poetry and prose. Yeah very much. So and i just finished reading her book strange shoulder and it was just so incredible. I act- i was mentioning it to her before the interview to and i can totally see the influences from like putting some poetry throughout it. So what not the idea to put poetry in the book in that way. I think i really am drawn to poetic writers like cormac mccarthy who has an epigraph in the book from him on tony morrison falconer hugest tend to have turns of phrases or ways of describing things that are just so original so i think that's. That's a huge kind of drivers. I like reading that kind of book about the kind of language based but also on their time in the book win. I just not very often. But i do kinda break. The lion at one point in usually. It's when i'm trying to describe something pretty dramatic Felt like i needed the page needed space in between sort of the steps of what was happening so You know when characters being victimized when she gets up to leave and so that kinda breaks the

Initial Betting After the NFL Schedule Release
"News the west gate here in las vegas just came out yesterday with lions every single game all eighteen weeks. You wanna bet on any nfl regular season game. Boom you can thousand dollars. There's a side anatole up at west gate so kudos to them. You know one thing that stood out jacksonville. We always talk about excessive travel. Not good for team. Jacksonville's the only team on the east coast. That is top. Five and travel miles of big part of that is due to go to london. And i also noticed. End of the year gave december january. Jacksonville has three games at sites that could have cold weather in december january. I looked at all. The southern california teams the florida teams in houston. None of them have more than one. So i'm pretty sure. I'm going to be actively looking at against the jaguars fire and ice come late in the year on the road gifts so the questionnaire for me is is that enough to go under on on the window. You know. Trevor lawrence is the big question mark. And i wanna see how he plays so i think i'm going to wait and evaluate not fire six and a half season a win number of pass on that.
A Prayer for Boldness to Share the Gospel
"Prayer for boldness to share the gospel by emily rose massey read by liam martin the wicked flee when no one is pursuing but the righteous are bold alliant proverbs. Twenty eight one. Few years ago. I was met with a strong desire to begin using my social media accounts to share my faith in christ with others. I didn't want to use my words to manipulate people's emotions to gain likes followers but to point them to the truth. Found in god's word alone as a writer. I see social media as a place of ministry. I never wanna compromise. God's truth so that others may feel comfortable to embrace my message. I don't want a twist or misinterpret scriptures that the entire meaning has changed. Her confusion is created because it might contradict what we find in the bible. I discovered very quickly that exposing darkness and error wouldn't win me any popularity contests online as someone who spent many years healing from the wounds rejection. Denying myself the desire to be a people. Pleaser has to take precedence when it comes to sharing god's truth even when it tends to offend standing up for god's word in a culture where truth is relative and not absolute as it should be comes with a lot of pushback even among professing christians but his true christ followers live to please god and not men as believers. We shouldn't compromise truth to be popular. We also shouldn't be quarrelsome. We need to stand firm upon truth no matter what others may say about us or about our god. Proverbs twenty eight one reminds us that believers don't back down or run away at the first sign of adversity a wicked flee when no one is pursuing but the righteous are bold as a lion proverbs. Beware Facebook Messenger Scams
"There's been an ongoing series of scams. Where people's facebook identities are taken over by a hoodlum who then having read all the stuff in. Somebody's facebook will then start sending messages to people with enough familiarity that they think they're dealing with somebody who really is that person and affinity fraud comes and bites some hard. You know. affinity fraud is is when you're much more likely to be scammed by a friend or family member and you are a stranger so the strangers impersonate friend or family member and come and rip you off. There was a very well researched story. Recently in the los angeles times that was written by the great david laskaris their consumer reporter extraordinaire about how this is become a big thing with facebook. That makes it really way too easy for people to hack into people's facebook accounts and then send these. Fake appeals is if they are that individual and there's an ugly one. It's been running around for a while involving lions club. Lions club is a is a community service organization and people are getting these fake messages. They're real messages but not from their actual friend on facebook telling them about these grants that are available through what they're pretending is lions club. And there's all these warnings out there now to know that those lions club grants don't actually exist. People are mad at lions club. They got ripped off. They had nothing to do with

We're going to have to give one of those animals away. Which one do you get rid of. I all right. You got which one you're giving away now get rid of another animal and then the next one and then the next one and then which one do you keep that last remaining animal. Just hold it in your mind's eye for a minute that's the animal that represents what you value most in life. Each of these animals are representative of the priorities in your life and like the lion is your pride in the horses. Your job and the cow is wealth and the Lamb is your significant other and The monkey is like a child. Michelle learned about this game from her aunt back when michelle was a teenager and the wish he thought about it back then was like okay. If the premise is that. I'm going on a trip. I need to pack really light and so i was like it's going to be a real pain in asks to like carpet lying around so like that's gonna go first and then like the cow is also like this really like large stubborn animals so like i can get rid of that and looking back it makes sense that michelle would immediately give up her pride in her hopes of striking it rich. Because you kind of have to. If you're going to grow up to be touring musician my name is michelle sonner and i also play in a band called japanese breakfast but before japanese breakfast was playing venues all around the world back when michelle was a teenager playing this game with her aunt the third animals she gave up was the horse and then as a real toss up between like the lamb and the monkey and when michelle played this game with her aunt. She was like wait a second. Have you played this game with my mom. What animal did she pick. Since you know choosing your child is an option why she better have picked the monkey. Although michelle wasn't a hundred percent sure that her mom would choose. The monkey felt was my mother's priority. But she was also kind of like somewhat of an enigma to me. And i think that that was why the type of game was so enticing to me because she could be very private and somewhat withholding as michelle writes in her new memoir crying h mart. Her mother wasn't what she calls a. Mommy mom my mom was by no means like coddling anyway. She was very present and very involved in my childhood but she was not easy on me in a lot of ways of every time i got injured. My mom would be very upset. Instead of like you know rushing to my aid and taking me to the doctor and sort of like telling me it's gonna be okay. She could you know she would get very angry and start yelling at me because she was just so angry that it happened. I think and didn't know how to track that energy. Even as michelle grew up her mom was always a source of tough love. I remember when. I got fired from my job at a waitressing and mexican fusion restaurant and i was so obsessed know worked really hard and and a lot of i've seen other moms we like you know it's their loss honey like you'll find another job or whatever. My mom's i won't show anyone can carry a tray. She just had this like very like cruel reality that she would hit me with in michelle's mothers defense. Michelle was kind of a handful. I was such a rowdy tomboy. I didn't take care of my things very well and that drove my mother crazy. My mom was someone who had like a twelve step skin care regiment and tony piece of clothing for twenty years and looked like it had never been worn and she took so such great pride in like self care and her appearance and fashion designer handbags. And you know. I was like a little punk kid that wore daniel. Johnston t shirts and patched overalls and wanted to like play rock music for a living. I was very angry and perplexed by my mom's decision to settle for
Will Burrard-Lucas: Photograghing the Black Leopard
"How far would you go to make that special image. How much time would you dedicate for the possibility of making that photograph for british wildlife photographer. Wilbert lucas. It was a matter of years until he was finally able to photograph. One of africa's rarest big cats the black leopard in his book the black leopard. He discusses the details of this challenge as well as many years creating stunning images of the continent's legendary animals including lions elephants and more he shares. How his inventions of his unique camera buggy and trump's open door to many of his classic photographs including those of the black leopard. This is ebonics. And welcome back to the candid frame. I'm enjoying the book. Oh good thank you very much. Yeah commend you on your writing. It's a nice read. I think david put a lot of effort into that side of it. Because i wrote it during lockdown say. Suddenly everything else is planned with sort of out the window. dedicates early. Nice amount of time to yet. Just i guess working attacks getting nice concise. I think it was a good time that if you're putting some sort of project off that didn't require being out somewhere yeah exactly. I'm not something like that out. It was a really good. The end project Issue but first off. Welcome to the show really glad to have you. Thanks yeah your pursuit of making this. This image of this black leopard is really fascinating. Certainly want to spend a good amount of time talking about that. But i thought i start because in reading it. They were just a whole variety of challenges that you faced in terms of being able to make those images and you know you had a lot of experience photographing a lot of different wildlife in a variety of different circumstances. What do you think were some of the the skills in sort of the talents that you developed over the years that you feel like were invaluable towards making the set up particularly images happen.

MAD Lions First LEC Championship in Thrilling Reverse Sweep vs. Rogue
"The reverse sweep for mad. Lions was pretty crazy that's definitely a heartbreaker for rogue as wave like seven years to finally get to final yet his emotional interview. They're up to. Oh and they. Day from what i had seen felt like. They were in a commanding position. A lot of those games so to let them slip away and get reverse left is pretty brutal For rogue but you know both these teams i think are really seeking some international redemption. Both had awful showings at worlds in a rogue went. What was it one. Five or zero six. In groups mad tied for last implants won the tiebreaker and then got knocked out in the first round of of the best of fives didn't even get to the qualifying round for world soon. It was the first major region team to ever actually get knocked out there. So in both these teams. I think are really hungry for redemption have improved. I think a lot from last year as well. And as as someone who is not at least like you know person who's casting lez like. I can get if you're if you're really hard corelli's that you're just like they don't just send you to. I know they'll do well but from the outside perspective like this is cool. I think it's exciting to see someone. That's not just the okay fanatic and g to our which one wins this time. Because that's what you has been always you know. They had one non fanatic. Gt winner ever and it was alliance in what two thousand fourteen two thousand thirteen or something like that. So i was really excited to see some new blood coming up. I think it's it's really really cool.

I'm rigging offer you exactly so could also be a real person Potentially a guy named canvas who the second who was king cyrus is son kind of that might be in a night him not as fun not shrine. Now i did read a really fascinating theory. That the prince. This is a little convoluted and probably not true. And i don't really see any theological evidence but it was someone funds listening so that the prince is a member of a sort of divine knights of the round table in heaven and he's not evil per se but he's antagonistic towards michael ask so. Some scholars consider ezekiel ten. And the fact that michael is mentioned as israel's prints to mean that y'all way has abandoned israel in this instance as they're like primo guy and Is now supporting king cyrus so in this theory. The princes of persia and greece don't oppose. Y'all way they just hate michael cut. Say what. I like about this a while. It's so it's like so there's a heavenly luminosity and one of the guys has be it. It's it's like saying. Like jesus is jesus but he only drinks dr pepper. So weirdly specific. Oh is that. I believe really want to take these general bucs and i want to just copy and paste them and make facebook post out. Let it watch watching burn so time two times and a halftime so the word here for time is the same word translated times earlier in the book of daniel and there's nothing to indicate that in the original tax there two times there's just multiple times so technically this means a time times and half time So without the either. I don't know if anyone else does. That's the kind of the point. So babylon had differs from me in a lot of ways but mainly in that they had some big like a pro math. Very pro math. Big math energy really loved them some math so the gods were frequently like represented with numbers. And and this. And i'm about to read something to you just to prove how much i don't understand what this okay. This is a sentence from a commentary. Okay okay the gods with their numerical valuations and planetary associations were the ones who set the astronomical terminology by which the cyclic movements in the heavens were used in the clinical calculations all of these factors make it very difficult to unpack the significance of the spray in here that we don't know so like these gods would get us on numbers and then that would help you determine like lunar cycle. I think so right. Well what are you just flexing on me that you had and either like in use in calico lindor coal calculations. Isn't that month. And like how you determine the season. How much money do.

They don't want you to look better than them. Climb higher than them be like more than them. They want you to stick to whatever their status quo is right. They don't want you to excel or stand out and they do not want you to make them feel bad about themselves by simply doing your thing. Whatever that thing is now those people are going to root against you sometimes just in their hearts but sometimes in a group tax but sometimes your ding dang face. So what do you do. We'll dana role models it perfectly. He does not file a complaint with the king. He doesn't bro out and start talking louder at them he for sure it hasn't started on group tax whining about the perceived enemy. What does he do well. He prays not hear me when folks are not on jamie. I want to file a complaint. I want a sub tweet. I wanna vague post about enemies lurking. I wanna dm dropped. Mike soliloquy that murders my fake enemy in their spouse and their kids. But it's not the answer. Daniel stayed tree to his purpose. He did not like workers deter him. From that purpose he kept an excellent spirit in him and focused on what mattered. We have to ignore the plots of frenemies and family strangers on the internet who tried to deterrence with must stay excellent spirit and keep living out our own purposes. Well good myself. Who cares is about. It's kind of the summation overtime. Time with daniel man who you know. Under really geeky circumstances never wavered was always known for his goodness capability and has integrity. Yes studying daniel kerr moment. It's really been eye opening for me and i didn't realize that until we really started looking into him because i feel like my faith in the identification. I have with has been shaken by the conduct and behavior of public. Christians resigned. You know on the one hand here. We are about daniel. How incredibly is how hot is but then in real life. It feels like we're getting parade of gross and indecent public or celebrity christians and to be completely transparent here. This is really been one of the darker seasons for me in terms of faith. Because i don't know how to square how identify with my faith versus how it's being portrayed by politicians and passers and comedians. And is this feeling of. I know what i think. When i believe but i don't want to identify with any of these guys that what i'm seeing in america right now. And that's why. I've been so thankful for daniel. He's demonstrated a private sturdiness with his face. But also a public one to the alignment of who he was what he said and what he did and how he believed was symmetrically perfect and that gives me hope and prepping for this episode. I came across a quote from alexander. Maclaren that said. The world is a very poor critic of christianity but it is a very sufficient one of my conduct. And i really liked that. Because i think what daniel shows is that these two things our beliefs and our actions. They should always be a lambing with each other. If you're like me you're tired of seeing religion being used Politics bikes of shoes or power. Lettuce i'll move forward observing the.

"Of lions their children their wives and before they reach the bottom of the dead. The lands overpowered them and broke all their bones in pieces wolf like dan. You gotta take me get an. I don't know if that was necessary. I guess you can't well listen. I guess you can't leave anybody behind to seek revenge like junior. Yes like you count. My father watched my dagda. Eat by the air buddies. Coming for you. Just take him. You have twenty later. I do think it's. I mean i don't know. Do you think they deserve to be eating. I just think oh. Of course. I believe in personal accountability. What if i said yes. Sure you gotta say. I'm against children. No the dudes the traps like the old testament vibe like daniel one. Us loss you gotta get consumed by the lions. But no but i think so for the traps. I think this was. It wasn't even about it was that you tried to set me up and i listen. I darius in charge you. don't ever get it twisted so you put danial to a task. You used me to try to murder man. That's how this is gonna work great spin zone. Just don't throw the lines in die. You think so. Listen you can be a loving king. But you're adjusting your like you're not gonna use me in your plot just because you think he brings too many donuts to meet. You're going to die me once. Shame on me for me twice. Y'all got give that. I twenty five thinking diers wrote to all the peoples nations and languages dwell on all the earth over come on a little bit peace be multiplied to you. I make a decree that in all my road. Dominion people are to tremble and fear before the god of dino for he is a living god enduring forever his kingdom shall never be destroyed and his dominion shall be to the end. versus seven delivers rescues. He worked signs and wonders in heaven and earth. He has saved daniel from the power of the lions for twenty eight. So this daniel prospered during the reign of darius and the reign of cyrus the persian. So that's story there. That's story i can't i like i like the ending of that. It's almost like a a correction of debica. Nezar it's this. No he's going to see the work of god and be all in on that. I think this is you know. This isn't the end of the book. Obviously withdrawing summarize here in a second but for our season here i think that's a great punctuation because in all the other seasons. I don't know that we ever got that Oh my gosh. That happened. And i need to shout from the rooftops. That daniel's daniel's god is the guy yeah but we'd get that he dares is like whoa. You got to know. This is a nice way to end the an okay. So guys the rest of the book of daniel like we mentioned in the last episode classic episode is that you have chapters that have been before this chapter right. So there's it's written out of order a little but in chapters nine ten eleven and twelve you get dino having these three heavenly meet ups okay. So the first heavily meet up. He's he's basically going to god and being like. Hey god could you forgive the israelites and give back jerusalem. Like it's just like it's been there been awful but if you could just do this and literally. Gabriel shows up right and gabriel is like hating. Oh god things are awesome also jerusalem or main desolate. were seventy weeks and then there's going to be like this new prince but he's going to be awful he's going to be wicked and he's to constantly fight wars and then it'll all end with the fled have agree day that.

"But it's it's it's a reflection on dino that what he does transcends belief system and culture that there's just like maybe we differ on some things but you're a good person and i like alec what your house. I'm hoping for you here. I read something in the rash that talked about what this was in the lions in And according to josephus upon. Which i got that don't even work Said the beast and the den received daynuss faithful dogs might receive their returning master wagging their tails and licking him which is hilarious and another one says the mouth of then was closed with a huge stone which had rolled off itself from palestine to babylon. For that purpose. You get that. Do you want me to read that again. Greg amid rash is the best fan. Fiction will stop okay continues upon this sound stat angel the shape of a lion so that stop it so that daniel's enemies might not harass him. I like why fossa is like on it. He's he's holding another lion. I love all of it. Maybe it's up there who knows i. Nineteen then at the break of day. The king rose and went in haste to the dean of lions question. If i did not sleep but it is a heroes. Was he all. He's not asleep laid down a little bit spicy. Take i feel like he did sleep and he was like i didn't mean to but i did so. It's like people waiting for santa like kids waiting for saying i'm not gonna go to sleep. I did verse. Twenty as he came near the dam were daniel was he cried out in tone of anguish..

But it's like oh no no you're gonna get more than you want. I don't like any of what you said by the appreciate you. State lines didn't seems it seems on part but like third dramatic like a flair for the dramatic flair for the dramatic. But in my thought here is. I feel like the civilizations in the cultures who are very who are like i'm good. I'm a fund parents. And i'm very lax. Yeah but when you cross me it's gonna get really ugly. And that's consistent with like friends of mine see them as parents. The ones who are hardcore their punishments are never that severe but the ones who are very chill when you cross them. Then it's over so that makes sense for me and then that kids having to wear a sign around their neck. They're eating milk and honey and we how that okay so then. My second question is when you're talking about. It says that inversed on that king darius signed the document i what. Do you think his vibe about this. Do you think was in attic. Was this like oh no. This is just one of those official pen moments where there's a photographer and signing the document using sixteen about to people like all the one hundred twenty one hundred one hundred twenty pens and he's like happy. Okay great i gotta go get my food. I just i will. I will say this for ancient kings but also like in current times. If someone like an advisory role comes to you with very very specific thing that they think you should do and do a right now. I would say question. Let's let's wait seventy two hours before why they're bringing that. The cultural background studies bible said. Is that persian. Kings were not prone to define themselves and that they were very tolerant of other religions. Right we talked about and so that this decree probably would have only applied to the persian population. But actually since was high up. He got snagged by own retard Beth thought what they said they said he fell afoul of it okay. Because of his position he would have had to succumb to it by nature. Cyrus was like do any wine but in this situation. It's like no you're too high up your number three or four in the camp. That's why i kind of appreciate. Sometimes we do these stories and we've done that says the bible bench when the scheme was just stupid honestly russia's really stupid like trying to trap in a variety of ways. It's just dumb right. This is clever. Because you're using the law against someone who you cannot stale. So i actually kinda respect what they're doing and they've done a good job they've been very good. Snitching have additional support for this episode of the bible. Bench comes from faithful. counseling is. "You make you better but i think the i do love you and i think at the end of the day we do get the sense. That darius is like i like you daniel. I like what you're about. But i'll also push you out of a car. Yeah i will if i have to. If all the traps they got to within iowa after yeah so obviously we have deal play bass hersher ronin and then our final character which is a fun kind of we love. We love a wildcard inner episodes and it is the lions in the lion's den. I'm facts about lying. Lions go on the hunt for feed mostly from desk till dawn. Which is he's going to spend a night in the end so that that's when they're ready to eat female lines to you. Eighty five to ninety percent of the hunting for their pride while males patrol and protect the babies. Yeah right and then often. Nine hundred is the king of the jungle. Although lines don't live in nichols they live. Mostly in savannah graph mediums and then lines run fifty miles per hour. That's just did not. But i forget that like female lions are like really slim and and lean and and i guess i'm just always thinking of like classic lion like your honestly you're thinking the lion king knowledge like hey simba you've got to come back and save us even though nala would have been not one really been like we don't need you. Were good but if you want to come back in like moonlight that's great to get. Yeah so i'm going to cast this complicated because you need someone who is friendly to good people but bat but mean to bad people right. Yeah because we get that here we that complexity here at the end the story and i'm gonna cast All the air buddies. Okay do you know who are buddies are. They're they're these dogs. These are the children of airbud. Okay air bodies their bud. Happy airbud Obviously movie star one of the most important figures of all time star Lives on On netflix was also comet on four house superstar a superstar in his own. Right one of them's regal. Animals has ever lived on this planet He sired all of these puppies. Okay who live on. It has memory. The air buddies. Okay and they. You know jamie. I'm believed some of them. End up in space. Rice liver complicating. And these are very like Almost paul thomas anderson type movies on netflix. That you guys should check out. I don't know why he does laughing. Bridges but i like them because they're very heartfelt which i think the lions are in this story to daniel but they aren't show business and they will cut you if they locate listen. They don't get a good deal. They're not going to get their age. They will fire their agent immediately. Right so i feel good about that. Okay so where we find ourselves from. The last episode is actually. We're picking up most timelines of the book of daniel places event. Right after darius has killed belshaw in my favorite part about this. And i think i mentioned this a couple of times and i will urge people. I will reiterate cyrus. The great is one of the most interesting historical figures. You promise all time i promise. He's good he so good. You do study a lot of historical figures. So that seems like high pray. There is a landmark series on one of my favorite podcasts called. How hard core history. "Like we talk about like you know not only the the obvious guys, right. The you know the the Lamar Jackson, the world. But like you know cuyler Murray and Josh Allen, and we're seeing more and more guys in homes, Patrick Mahomes. We had two different games. We had over fifty rushing yards last year. So we're seeing more and more guys adding value with their legs and staffers just not going to be one of those guys agreed. There's that there's also death, right? Like he's got Kenny Golladay, he's got Marvin Jones and then. Any. TJ Hawkins at like. There's a there's like there's not a lot of depth around him. If anything were to happen in a season which you know again Kennedy's also in the Kobe nineteen list. So. Allison also recently out that, they do not that enter a deputy just one less. I'm just saying there are other. There are other teams where if something happened to one of their big wide receivers, you feel better about that team here than you do the lions. So that's another concern here. WHY DON'T WE TURN TO DANIEL DOPP? Who's doing his Best Matt Patricia Impression today just put a pencil behind you're. Can you put a pencil behind your ear? The there you go. You're Matt, Patricia Right now. Well, you know guys look, it's a, it's been a tough run game. We're getting out there. We we drafted the Andrea Swift. We're GONNA. Make sure we get involved. Obviously. Bella did a great job. More pass heavy last year than we thought devil oftens rake is. The attention to detail to have the eraser. Out Supposedly eraser tucked behind your head Daniel, you are a lifelong and you are low to the soil when it comes to the lion. So. You have him. You Have Matthew. Do you own a matthew? Stafford. Jersey I do and you were a lifelong Detroit Lions Fan. Mathis effort garage sale before accurate. I. Love Matthew. Stafford. However in fantasy everything that I saw last year before his back injury looked fantastic points bringing basis. He crushed it. I. Don't know. Is it wrong? Just saying like I've watched the Lions play for twenty years. So I'm a little bit pessimistic until I. See it happen like I think this comes back down to a little bit. We talked about the Rogers though is that simply there are a lot of quarterbacks who have a lot of things going in their favor this year now that they don't need as many things to stay on track to maintain that value is perhaps Matthew Stafford does right. So Matt. Matt Ryan and is a good comp Matt Ryan in terms of athletic ability both guys who are not runners but can runs they might pick up one hundred, fifty rushing yards year and in a good year, right. But Matt Ryan has better and deeper weapons. I would say, right? Sorry. I. Think that's probably a pretty EAS-? Pretty Fair statement beyond that like Matthew Stafford and Matt Ryan, they have sort of comparable defensive questions that, hey, how are you supposed to separate someone like Matthew, Stafford? From a Matt Ryan from maybe even a Carson wentz right I mean he's got. Better running ability, but probably inferior weapons unless things break. Really Right. So her there are all kinds of part of this territory that. Yeah, it's I if I left the draft and I was so ridiculously patient on quarterback. Matthew, Stafford was the best available player I'm going into my season feeling fine, but he's also not a quarterback that if I am creating a target list of the top ten to twelve, he's not on my top ten to twelve target list just why we haven't ranked fifteen and I think that's fair. I think he's like you know what he is. He's like I would put him in the same Matt. Ryan is a good comp, Carson Wentz, I, think drew brees, I. Think they're all like breathe a little more confident. The ceilings really high end breese. He reminds me. We're Andy Dalton for lot of years and fantasy football. He has rarely the quarterback that you were targeting. But if you had him throughout the season, he probably wasn't the reason you lost your year. You didn't win your championship. Exactly. He is fine. He's going to be an above average fantasy football quarterback this year, but and I'm saying this. This, even though he was a top six quarterback last year, it's unlikely to me that he winds up the year inside the top five like wind up somewhere between eight and twelve like he's fine. But like Ben Rothlisberger going around him, like Ben Rothlisberger could be a top five fantasy quarterback. If everything breaks, right. We've seen it before like eighteen was a top five quarterback. So I anyway. Let's move over that. Yeah. But we KINDA. Like he's to me, he's one of the hardest place to rank. This year would say that's fair. Another one that's tricky is lines running back to you on your roster as a reminder to people, they use the thirty fifth overall pick in this year's draft on the Andrea Swift out of Georgia, and this is one of my favorite stat. Think about all the great running back have come from. From Georgia and talking about recently. But recently, you've got nick, Chub, could play. Right? Really good player is sort of Michelle who had an awesome rookie post-season. We'll see what he makes of his NFL career. girly. I mean. One of the greats right I mean we've seen some studs going to Georgia. Yeah. No Sean, Merano? Yes. Sure. Number like we've had a lot of really really good players. You knew lead Georgia in terms of career yards per carry. I'm going to guess since we're in the Lions Andrea Swift. And deadly. I must have led you down that road to live up in many breadcrumbs they are. This one's a really tough one. This one is a really, really tough one. So. Look. Here's the thing Matt. Patricia. and. This is one of the reasons why I was somewhat down on Kerryon Johnson, going into last year relative to where he was going. Matt Patricia Comes from the Bill Belichick. School Matt Patricia Come, as Bob, Quinn..

Yeah, apparently, it's not because it was a couple of years later that Daytona really started like making the taxes so high and everything like that to discourage spring breakers. Send him to where they may be maybe now clearwater, whatever will, your hotel would have to be like one of those groovy modern cars who which car is? VW. Somebody makes a car. I had a girlfriend and I would just the kind of guy that I had a girlfriend, so that wasn't on my agenda and women Dolphin Sin- mostly hung out with another guy who also had a girlfriend so and we just drank beer. That's all we did the whole time. Nonstop everybody in my room is just nonstop a beer-drinking. It makes no sense looking back on what? What would be trying to kind of? What was the joint here? Add some water probably and before you know it, it's a plant. Seeds. and. He's Oh speaking of putting things under the ground S. all right. It's time airs this story. My Lawn has been utterly decimated by a mole or moles Russian moles. Soviet moles, no Susan Rice. No, no, what James Comey. They disrupt the lawn, they they're piles of dirt everywhere tunnels and the restaurant and I tried tried various methods to get rid of it, and then asked on the air. If anybody had any advice in and Matt, who does for living responded and says hey do this for living. Here's what I would suggest. Use this equipment Blah and he's been enormously helpful. and so Judy Nice Sunday. We put these mold traps under the ground. If you missed yesterday's podcast, the ideas that are very much like a mouse trap. They look quite different, but it's the same idea. The mole trips trigger the jaws snapshot, and your description was. It gets a neck. Firm neck hug probably a little too firm, or wherever the the jaws of some would say death wherever the mole that's where he gets the Hug Jack. Joe Biden. It doesn't ask whether you want to be hug. Partisan politics so anyway. So we, we planted these traps according to Matt's fabulous directions and the and the video on the website. And we found a perfect tunnel as we were describing yesterday and put traps down there and then recovered them up. Put the dirt around, so there is no sunlight two days later, not a single additional mole hill in the yard all right. I thought. Two days long enough, man, 'cause it six doesn't go by without more damage being done along, and so I got all this little bastards Oh. Yeah, well. Yeah, they've got a metabolism like well. Actually like a lot of animals are size like shrew. They just go counseling in two days long enough, I'm digging it up. So I took the the earth like plug core thing that got out and to my surprise, the whole was. was really full of loose dirt I thought. That's weird. Because this is kind of a plug thing I'll dig through the dirt. Dig and I can see. One of the June one of those traps has been triggered so I pull it up. Empty. Dig I. Find The other one it to has been triggered. Empty I feel triggered. Anyway IS IT turns out? I wrote to a whiff since the wrong texting I texted. You guys a picture that Matt sent me that we're going to talk about in just a second but Let's see but I said I explain to him what happened? He said Yeah. It's pretty typical especially with rookies. You gotta find a different spot on the tunnel. Try Again, etc, etc, and he said the when it's. It's because it's rained a little bit where I live, but he says wet dirt Oh and we started watering more because long starting to Brown on, he said wet dirt is a lot easier from them to deal with. They don't have to vent it out of the tunnel. That's why you don't see any new mole hills, but probably in their diggins. They threw dirt onto the trap. It triggered the traps before they got higher. Banner stand. The crap works, and soon they'll be coming into my home. She's and they're just eating like. It with cheese I'm not sure. Is there any chance your dog tipped him off like you've got a mole your home? My dog is a mole working on behalf of moles. That's going to be confusing to the readers. Wait a minute honey. The dog is a mole. What is now now? We're talking about the little beast now. The mole, the mole to. of so he says I said just sitting footer to away from that now jinxed spot if you can find the same tunnel. And I said how's bastards? He said check this out from last week at the National Cemetery in San Francisco. This was just one mole sent. You guys the picture via text, can you? Can you get it right? Yeah, I'm looking at it yet. Take a look at that one, two, three, four five. Win In they stretch on. You can't see the other row, but except the mall what period of time Oh, that's not clear although those diggings look very fresh to me, so probably within a day or two, that's. National Metairie, it's like Arlington National Cemetery, but it's in San Francisco, and it's defacing the graves of our fallen heroes, and that's what matters for living. He goes to places like that and ends that but quick. And I've resisted the temptation. Have actually come.

They are now less than two thousand lions and Kenya. In the US. The grizzly bear has also been reduced to a tiny remnant of the historic population. My guest today or two women who have dedicated they live turning things around. I want to know from them. What women can bring to conservation efforts? And whether it's all a losing battle shivani Bhalla founded a Wasser lions in two thousand and seven the organization works in northern Kenya. With local communities to encourage them to not kill lions, but live alongside them in two thousand fourteen shivani was awarded a Whitley fund for nature award for her passion for conservation and big cats in particular, shivani, welcome. Thank you so much Kim very happy to be here for the best part of three decades. Louisa Wilcox has been advocating for the preservation of the grizzly bear in the US who work has put her in direct. Opposition to those who believe that the bears are now thriving and they're longer need to be listed as an endangered species. She runs a website and podcast called the grizzly times. Louisa welcome. Thank you. It's great to be here Louisa and shivani for someone like me who lives in the city. Why should I care about animals like lions and bears being in decline? In remote rural parts to me. The grizzly bear is a magical and mystical animal. It is so much like us. It's smart. It has a good memory at walks on his hind legs. Like, we do at each many of the same foods. And and it nurtures it's young for many years. But more importantly, even it's the essence of the wild wild west in the United States that we've largely lost plowed under clear-cut or developed, and it reminds us of a more ancient past that was connected to nature wild nature in a way that increasingly scarce. Now, shivani what is the case for carrying? So I love what Lewis said about it being the essence of the while. It's very much the same with lions across Africa. Imagine an African savannah without lions. Imagine a savannah that is so quiet that you can't hear the roar of a lion. And that sadly is the reality for me as a Kenyan not having lions in. Kenya is something so serious. It is a symbol of our country. It is a majestic animal. It is on our coat of arms, and I really do feel. It is my responsibility ensure that lions in Kenya. Don't disappear people from all over the world. Come to see lions in Kenya. And it's a global responsibility to protect them Louisa when it comes to the conservation of powerful predators. Like lions and bays. Do you think women do things differently terms of their approach? I absolutely do think women do things fundamentally differently. There's much more of a. Sense of community of trying to develop relationships in community to problem solve to understand the root of conflicts wire bears and people having trouble in this particular landscape, where the points of intervention whereas and this is a horrible generalization. But in my experience often, the guys come in with a lot of firepower and try to solve things with a gun, and it can be over very quickly and very tragically and doesn't make the larger point that fundamentally. We don't have to kill these animals. We can coexist. She's funny. What about lions made you want to go and live in a camp in the middle of absolutely no way to monitor them and protect them. Yes. It's true. I've lived in a ten for the last seventeen years, my ten size has grown. Fortunately. In fact, I'm speaking to you from my tenth right now. And for me, it's about I've always had this obsession with the big cats. So it started off with cheetahs and then turned into lions about eleven years ago when I couldn't see cheetahs anymore. But I was seeing lions absolutely every single day. And it was then that I discovered. Wow, these lions are so different to what I remember seeing growing up going on this safaris with my parents on safari. I would see big prides of lions, but here in some boroughs, saying individual lions, solitary lions, what was happening and that really sparked my interest Louisa you spoke very eloquently about your admiration and affinity for forbears. The what caught you insult and trying to protect them. Specifically grizzly bears were very very scarce in the nineteen seventies. And I will never forget my first encounter in the mountains. I taught mountaineering for a number of years, and it was an evening. I was trying to get down to camp. I wasn't paying much attention. I was really tired and out of the dusky gloom in this small meadow. I was just barging through was this grisly bear. And it was this split second moment of locking is. And there was this intelligence wisdom. I mean it felt. Time stood still felt like and it wasn't because the bear just took off disappeared into the woods. And I just went. Oh my God. What was that? And of course, I knew they were bears. You you would see signed bet I'd never had an encounter. It didn't take very long before. I realized how scarce they really were maybe four hundred bears in the greater Yellowstone ecosystem this vast region. And then one thing led to another and finding out how how often they died. How bloody a mess we were creating. There was poaching going on a lot of unnecessary killing. And I just went we can do better. We don't have to kill these last few animals that are you know, hanging on by their by their claws. Really? And so that's what I've dedicated my life to she von is there an encounter that comes to mind with a particular animal that made you think about them differently. About twelve years ago. I got very used to seeing a lioness every day we named her Nasha pie, which means the beautiful one in the local assembler language. She was an incredible hunter a terrible mother. But then she got older things got harder for her. And I remember driving along one day and it was getting late. It was getting dark, and I saw a whole herd of cows crossing the road, and then I looked to my right and sure enough stalking. Cows was not pie this lion. As and I knew we had to stop that. Because one of the biggest problems we face it as human line conflict lions kill cows and camels, and then then you get retaliation with the lions in shot or speared. And I knew art team has got to stop these cows from being killed by Nasha pie. And we drove in between her and these cars, and it didn't stop her. She just kind of tried to walk around car, and we try to chase the cows as quickly as we could across the river. And it meant us driving inside the river and the cars was slowly slowly getting across. We actually had to get out of the car and chase her on foot. She got so frustrated with us that she disappeared into the bushes. But it really showed me how tough it was for her. She was getting old. She was alone. She was finding no natural prey the biggest problem lion's face. Here's the lack of food lack of wild pray for them. And here she was chasing the cause. But we knew we got to stop the cars from being killed because these are the livelihood to the local people if she killed a cow her future. Her security was at risk. And there were chances. She would be killed. So it's this constant battle that we're trying to address every day. So you visa this is something that must resonate with you. Because you also trying to reduce. Human bear conflict. How will you working on that? Yes. I mean, one of the first things that should be said is that grizzly bears? Don't die for the most part of natural causes they die because people kill them in one kind of conflict or another and that's even with forty years of protection under the Endangered Species Act. So we've really been working to try to alleviate conflicts. And even with that we're still killing them many argue, including myself at unsustainable rates. What are the very early areas of my work involved garbage? Because grizzly bears are smart they eat a lot of the same stuff. We do and they will get into town community residences and eat whatever refuse is left out. You know, whether it's garbage or dog food on a porch or livestock feed, and that kind of thing and nothing is rocket science in terms of coexistence with grizzly bears are or carnivores generally is commonsense preventative stuff like putting your trash inside putting your livestock. Penn at night or in a barn keeping attractiveness away from bears, and sometimes that meant developing new garbage system. So that was a big community effort because he thinks are can be expensive. So that took a lot of work and many many people in the community had to agree that they wanted to live with bears. So you had to have a level of support and tolerance and goodwill to bears enter to problem solving. And so that was a lot of my early work that has shifted in recent years to an issue that relates to climate change. We've been losing some of our native grizzly bear foods and intern bears have had to find other things to eat. So they've been getting tangled up in conflicts with cows sound a little bit like Chavannes experience too. And there's many things that cattleman can do about getting rid of carcasses. So they're not available so easily to bears electric fence around pans, more serious, fencing and bear spray is a big one. It's a kind of new technological development. It's basically hot pepper in a can that's sprayed in a cloud and gets in their eyes and nose. So in a counter situations people can spray bears and get them to leave. So do they tend to leave did attend to lead? Yes. Absolutely ninety four percent of the close encounters involving hairspray successfully deterred the bear. Okay. Small straight for those shivani. I'm just thinking in these communities that you're working in the wealth is in the livestock, and if a lion takes the families only cough. Don't they have the right to retaliate? Of course. Yes. The camels cows donkeys sheep mean everything for the postulates, it's their life. It's their Bank. And when a line comes to kill your only car camel,.
