Philadelphia Eagles sign linebacker Eric Wilson
"Eagles have made some news over the last couple of days that we should pass along. The birds have made a couple of free agent signings Over the last couple of days and will run those down for you here. You can tell. It's a totally new eagles regime by the way when they go out and prioritize adding a linebacker in free agency although the eljay fort fiasco tells us not to count our chickens before they're hatched. The eagles signed former vikings linebacker. Eric wilson to a one year deal this week worth up to three and a quarter million dollars. There is a connection to the eagles. Here with wilson a linebackers coach. Nick rally spent time as wilson's assistant position coach for the last three years in minnesota. So you know so much time when you're adding free agents who your trading for players. There's always some kind of coaching connection especially here with the eagles over the last few years and that continues to be the case. Now wilson turns just twenty years old in september so he's a younger player and became a full time starter for the vikings last year. How do you really solid season for them to record it. One hundred twenty two tackles eight passes defended three interceptions in one forced fumble clearly. He's the number one linebacker on the roster. Right now. he'll be atop the depth chart he'll be the guy starting at middle linebacker unless something totally unforeseen happens. And i'm still kind of trying to figure out how the eagles got their hands on them at this stage in the off season for it for as little as they did and considering the salary cap situation that they're in and we know that this is not a position. The eagles have prioritized a whole lot. In recent off seasons they did again. Like i mentioned a sign eljay for contract very early in the offseason. Two years ago when it seemed like their third free agent off the board and they gave him a lot of guaranteed money. And then jim schwartz never played them and they cut him in midseason in the baltimore. Ravens picked him up in a hurry and he played great for them in the second half of the two thousand nine hundred and season to the point where they signed him to a contract extension before the season was out and eljay ford would have been a very big help in the eagles on the eagles. Defense these last couple of years and so we're kind of. I don't think this is going to go that way Eric wilson has has has a little bit more to his resume than eljay ford did when the eagles picked him up

Marty Schottenheimer, NFL coach with 200 wins, dies at 77
"So james some sad news in the nfl coaching world. If you're of a certain vintage you'll remember the name marty schottenheimer. He was a coach starting with the new york giants back in seventy five when he was their linebackers coach and kept coaching right up until two thousand six with the san diego chargers. He was a head coach in kansas city. Washington san diego. But i remember most with cleveland browns head coach in the mid eighties for them when they got. Oh so close to a super bowl. Berth in the afc title game. They're about to beat denver. They're about to go in for the winning touchdown in the final minute of the game and earnest byner get stripped just as he's about to step into the end zone offload jeremiah casteel. Dist reached in grabbed the ball off byner denver recovers and they hold on for thirty eight to thirty three win. And that was. It's called the fumble. If you say that in cleveland people know the fumble ohio and The brown had no shortage in sports of disappointments. So that would be one of them. When you say the fumble people know exactly what you're talking about and really gives until the cavaliers finally when an nba title really lent itself to the lovable loser. Tag that cleveland. Sports fans have had for many years but marty schottenheimer Certainly had lots and lots of success. I think he was like fourth all time as far as coaching winds. Go so sad news to hear his passing today at the age of seventy

Philadelphia Eagles head coaching search tracker
"Cody. Thanks for coming back on. I in the enemy man. How are you. I'm doing great great to be with you. I'm excited to talk some football absolutely and let's jump right in to the eagles. Coaching search here. Because more names get added to this list everyday to say that the eagles have cast a wide net would be understating it a little bit. You tweeted out. And i think it was either yesterday or today but as a recording. This on the fourteenth is was on the thirteenth. You tweeted out a whole list of names. We've got carolina offensive coordinator. Joe brady tennis offensive coordinator arthur smith san francisco defensive coordinator robert soleil tampa bay defensive coordinator. Todd bowles new england linebackers coach. John mayo kansas city quarterbacks coach mike kafka philadelphia assistant head coach do staley oklahoma head coach lincoln riley ohio state head coach ryan day. Cincinnati head. Coach luke fickle and more are coming each and every day and i know among eagles fans. You know we see this as a pretty dysfunctional team right now. We see this as an organization. That doesn't seem to know exactly what they're doing and we're skeptical as to whether or not a a really high profile coach is going to want to come here given the list of names here. Where are you at on this eagles. Coaching search as there really are just getting started right. Now yeah and we saw it just kellen more added today and obviously you know they're going to continue to cast the net and i think just in general. I think there's a little merit to the idea that you know when you compare openings. The eagles aren't A bursting with attraction just because of the situation. I mean Doug peterson clearly. If the reports are to be believed is is kind of worn down from from this run with eagles. And but i honestly don't put too much stock into this idea that they're undesirable because at the end of the day there's thirty two jobs. There's thirty two head. Coaching jobs in the nfl. We see guys in view with with teams like the jets and the jaguars every coaching cycle. Yes they sometimes have high picks so they sometimes have a lot of cap space but at the end of the day. It's nfl fell head coaching job. You can't tell me you know if you're joe brady and you're getting interest from all these teams. I mean you're not going to just not going to turn down the opportunity and so And eventually some of the spots are gonna get filled For me i mean i. I start for the eagles with looking at the offensive side of the ball. I know that's it's a big talking point. Jeffrey lurie with with you know really any eagles fan. That's been under or watching. Jeffey larry hires run. The team I i think really it comes down to are you going for You're gonna have to sacrifice somewhere. Because with somebody like joe brady even kellen moore. You're really banking on them. Being kind of an offensive mastermind and up and coming mastermind as opposed to this Person who's been around the league for years and respected and you know doug peterson even though he didn't have head coaching experience. Jeffrey loria himself talked about that emotional intelligence he talked about. Doug peterson former quarterback. In this league he had time under andy reid and so i. I think it's just a matter of where are they gonna sacrifice. Because if they go with robert. Sal the forty niners you're sacrificing. You might bring in a nice offensive coordinator with them but he may leave here for another head coaching job. And so what do they want. We're gonna find out.

Now, the trade is not going to be officially processed until the new league year begins March thirteenth, but according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. "And the news was that in two thousand nineteen Keith Butler along with being the defensive coordinator is also going to be taking over the role of Outside Linebackers coach now is that means they're not filling Joey Porter's vacancy with any outside name like Kevin Greene. Who all the fans wanted that also means that he's going to be returning back to his roots? So to speak as he was linebacker coach. Under dick lebeau for all those years. Guys, avocado questions for you to answer. First and foremost is it do you think this is actually manageable for a defensive coordinator to also in entire position group? I know that everyone says well Randy feet in her coaches the quarterbacks how much coaching the quarterbacks you think's being done that isn't already being done as the offensive coordinator. But I'll as let answer that yourselves. And then Secondly, is is what is this means for the defense is this means that they're going to have to coordinators with Terrell Terrel Austin, and you know, Butler with the front seven and the secondary. Brian I'll go with you first. What are your thoughts on this move? The dealers may first and foremost, I thought Randy feet. Her was the quarterback coach and Ben Roethlisberger was the offensive coordinator. Correct. Me if I'm wrong. You're right. You're politics. Also, we have another coach coaching an entire an entire group. And that's Mike Tomlin kind of makes me one. Under guys did has Keith Butler been demoted, and they're just not put it in on paper. That's kind of screams to me. Here's the bottom line. His contract runs out at the end of this year. They don't have to fire him. They could do the same thing. They did with Todd Haley or but also say, hey, you can fight for your job. You could fight for the outside linebacker coaching job. He he did wonders there too. But he also had all the talent in the world. Maybe if he just focuses on that what is peril Austin actually doing it. Did you save the front seven is like secondary? He'll be primarily the secondary. Okay. So with that being said, we're Tom Bradley at this point. He's still on staff me still said they're doing is they want to split up the safeties and mcquarters between the two of them. It's going to get which one. But to me this is actually an audition a very cheap audition for peril. Austin for to be the offensive coordinator. I mean, excuse me, the defensive coordinator it could be. I mean, it could be that. It could be. Let's a quiet demotion. And maybe have Mike Tomlin do more of the the coordinating. But we haven't really loved what he's been doing as coordinator..

"They can be pretty careful with they bring in at these other assistant marks because now you have unproven head coach basically unproven offensive coordinator del Rio is I think a good higher in the fact that he's got a lot of experience in the NFL. That's a good guy to lean on, but any other ideas or names out there. You wanna toss toss around that you think could be good fits for the Bengals in some of their position coach capacities. You've got tight ends got off its of lying. You've got quarterbacks. What medicine your linebackers? Things like that. Yeah. I'm not tremendously prepared for this question. I guess because. You don't you don't hear about these guys until they get hired right? Like unless they're like former coordinators that that got fire the are looking to get a job. I guess I know some people have doubts about Bill Callahan coming, but I think from how early that was like being reported, or whatever I think the the Bengals do have plants other swindle him away from the Redskins or because the when the buccaneers hired aeriens the Tampa Bay ended up sending a six round pick their Zona because they thought the areas of still under contract with Arizona, and they didn't even have to do it. I think that's a possibility of the Bengals could do with Washington either to establish good faith and potentially featuring dull trade or just to get. You know, Zach Taylor's former college coach in into the staff in in replace replacing all obviously because we don't know if Pollock either left on his own accord because he didn't like the direction that they were going or they just had. You know, featuring business for a guy who's even better than in that definitely fits the Bill the Bill for Kellyanne. But I'm definitely interested in seeing who the linebackers coach is going to be because you're looking at not only just a new defense coordinator. But under new head coach who was obviously defensive oriented in was a former linebacker coach of his own. You know, it could be a guy who was who worked under a del Rio or, you know, agai another system from another team who just looking for star. But over that linebacker's coach is I think that's the position in general that we will probably see the most vast difference because of how low the quality has been that position group for so long and just it's just the same kind of coaching philosophies under Louis so to have a fresh face there. And I know I'm kinda dodge the question all the name for because honestly, stall. But I just think that's really just the probably. Interesting to watch because we we should probably expect some fresh brand new floss vs brand new preferences of players at that position. Yeah. I mean, there are some some interesting names still out there one that kinda in this would be something maybe for the quarterbacks coach thing in it might elicit some I rolls. I'm not a big fan of the guy myself based on kind of some of the things that he's done. But he to my knowledge he is available. That's Joe Philbin. And he's he's kind of an offense of mind guy that I don't know again, you look at some of these position coaches he's been a head coach was fired as a head coach. And interim coach this year, you know, so he could be a guy that if you're looking for bigger names that could be floating out there. You know, there are other assistance kinda working their way up as well. Amid do not be surprised if it's a bigger name, quote unquote that end up filling some of these position coach things that we saw. The the Bengals linebacker coach his name is escaping me. At the moment. He was the head coach of the saints. They just got rid, but he had head coaching experience. And yeah, what the hell after has like gosh. It's been a long Jim has it's been a long week already. But our former linebacker coach. Yeah. Yeah. Jim has let but he was a guy that was a head coach for a long time defensive coordinator kinda took the perceived step back if you will in terms of going from NFL head coach to a position coach..

"Patrick Graham is coming in who has not been defensive coordinator before. Currently he is the linebackers coach for the Green Bay Packers. He is also the run game coordinator correction inside linebacker Scotia. Not even the whole linebackers crew. So he's going to be making a huge jump right from inside linebackers coach to all the way to the top defensive coordinator interesting enough. Brian floor is also the linebackers coach in New England that defensive play caller the defacto defensive coordinator. So you're getting it to guys the linebacker background moving up to the dolphins and two of the top roles on the team. So keep an eye on that as you look at how the dolphins will be utilizing their linebackers. I think the linebacker position might play a big role on this team moving forward. Patrick Graham, sorta coaching Wagner two thousand to move this way up Richmond Notre Dame started with the patriots in two thousand nine defensive coaching assistant linebackers coach twenty eleven twenty twelve twenty thirteen twenty four twenty fifty moved to the giants then the Packers and now moving to the dolphins has a Super Bowl champion as well. And how I know you guys have been researching Patrick Graham a lot. So what you have to say. What is he bringing to the Miami Dolphins? I just wanna say happy birthday to him. Because today's his birthday says he's forty years old. So Patrick, Patrick Graham. You're one of us Finns up. But honestly, just looking through it. I mean, the thing that stands out the most is the time you spent with the New England Patriots defensive coaching assistant defensive assistant coach linebackers coach defensive line linebackers defensive line. I mean, he was with new. Guin for what appears to be a good a good six or seven years. I mean, that's where to have miliary with each other in. It's gonna be exciting to see because the linebackers in Green Bay by all accounts, in my opinion. I think have played pretty well over the last few years. So I mean, he obviously has been successful, you know, coach at different positions. But what's he doing? He gets to call the plays. If Flora's, you know trust him to do. So it's going to be very interesting to see. But I'm excited the that, you know, we've seen these dolphins try to rebuild so many years than they never kinda took on that makeup of the New England Patriots. Who by all accounts is probably the greatest dynasty in sports history is discussing his ad is to say, but I mean to see us sitting here and try to mold into you know, a team like that that's had success in sustained it for so many years. It's exciting some exciting to Patrick Graham can do OSHA mean Bella favoring him in. I mean, you hope that they they bring these guys in we can get success. Because it's something that we've wanted for many many years from Waterbury, Connecticut, hop skip and a jump from our own Matthew cannot at is a hop skip and a jump and Waterbury might also ring a bell for a few other people. It was the Waterbury open. We're happy Gilmore did win about twenty eight years ago. But like you said how Patrick Graham has been kinda alternating between being a linebacker or defensive line coach for for several years. And when you pair that with Flora's background yet, he has the linebacker acumen, but he's also worked with safeties and different rungs of the defense and scouting and everything. So those two were together, I think is going to be really cool, and the fact that you know, Paget Graham went to Yale. Brian Flora's was an all academic team at Boston College. So I'm sure you'll see some reports when everything is made official about the color of these guys skin. And yet it's a cool advancement for the Miami Dolphins. But these gentlemen, are absolutely qualified to be doing what they're doing. And I'm really excited to see what they can do with some of these young pieces on defense now and with Bret bielema, you know, he he has mostly college background other than this one year consulting with the New England Patriots. But if he ends up working with these guys, then you have somebody who has studied under Hayden fry and Kirk farance, and college coaches that actually give crap about playing defense Bill Snyder berry Alvarez, so these.

"Cannot joined by komo's Josh outs and air inside. Hello. Everybody had welcomed few inside radio this. I'm joined by Josh Hamilton Aries. And we're at a standstill in terms of the Miami Dolphins and all the news floating around. Yes. Some rumors coming out nothing official, obviously as we talked about in the past few shows Brian Flora's, the current patriots faculty -fensive coordinator and linebackers coach expected to be named the next head coach of the Miami Dolphins as soon as the patriots season is over rumor names coming out such as Jim Caldwell Tim Graham, guys like Bret bielema other guys coming in as well. Obviously, nothing's official until Brian floors comes on, but we do know general manager, Chris Greer is bringing on assistant general manager Marvin Allen from the Buffalo Bills who also spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs, Atlanta, Falcons and others. Also in terms of Miami. Dolphins news, it's really more of the same of you know, weird of the dolphins go from here. But one big sticking point is that they reportedly told coaching candidates during their interviews for the head coach possess. Mission that they would be taking in all terms and purposes and for a lack of better words, basically in twenty nineteen so they can get a top quarterback in twenty twenty. We're going to talk about that in just a few minutes on tonight show. We're also going to talk about inside information. I'm going to give you a little bit of a primer about it. And what it really means. And how it all works because some may think that it's just out there in plain sites. This sources just come out and say, this is what's happening. But that's really not always the case. So we'll talk about that. And then we'll wrap up the show with just a quick rundown of this weekend's championship games. I mentioned the report of the dolphins. Tankan brought on by Adam Schefter ESPN. The first thing I want to be handed over to you house for your thoughts on this and whether or not the dolphins should quote unquote tank for a top quarterback prospect in twenty twenty two and Justin Herbert guys like that in twenty twenty drafts is there's no such thing as taking in the NFL in my opinion. There's you can't tell players to go out and tank, you're not going to tell coaches to God and tank, but the process that you follow is ultimately going to lead to losses, which basically would be tanking. Right. So if you trade all of your high priced veterans away if you build a very very young roster. If you run out there with a quarterback a mediocre quarterback of blow average quarterback all that process. All of that will lead you losses on own. I do like the termi building..

"I mean, not accept jobs. Maybe come to a little wink wink, nod nod agreement that Zack Taylor. The Rams often. The Rams quarterbacks coach is going to be that goes this scenario Bengals and Brian Florez, the linebackers coach in New England who's going to be the dolphins head coach in both these cases, I think e you get some experienced guys in there. And even if they're on our contract yet, maybe have them start to work the phones Jim called walls and name that I've heard could be involved with that in Miami with Brian Flora's couple names to watch. We'll talk about more about this in a second. Daryl Bevill and Mike Sherman, potentially Zack Taylor's father in law in Cincinnati. And so there are ways to do. It is competitive for assistant coach is not ideal to build a staff when you're still in the playoffs. There have to build a staff when you're still in the playoffs. Obviously can't be involved in interviewing guys bring in that sort of thing. But there is a way to at least build the foundation of a staff and. Then you have to try to make up for it later by being maybe more creative when you're hiring question. Number three. This is from Paul Grega at Paul, Greg. That last question flows right into this one the coordinator predictions for Cincinnati. I would predict the Darrell Bevill will be the offensive coordinator there. I think having any experienced offense coordinator make some sense if they are going to go younger, we'll keep an eye on Brian Callaghan. The quarterbacks coach in Oakland on defense. I wouldn't be surprised to see it be someone like Jack del Rio again, experienced hand sort of offset. Zack Taylor's lack of experience. And look I means activities had a front row seat for all of that. Right. That a front row seat for all that in and and in in Los Angeles, seeing the way younger coach has to operate. And of course, Sean McVeigh show. Great humility, I use that word again humility and bring in bringing Wade Phillips guy who's been a head coach three times in the NFL. And I think Jack del Rio hiring Jack del Rio is defensive coordinator or someone like that would certainly MIR. What McVeigh did in Los Angeles question number four jets fan is handles at not since sixty nine Joe Namath. References names will was situation the jets Greg Williams as DC if not who if not him who need a strong presence since gays admitted these will likely be head coach to the defense. Well. Part of the problem here for the jets is that they had three names and two of them are off the table and so-. Greg Williams has a lot of leverage right now. He's had interest from different teams. Maybe by the time. You listen to this. He's been hired. But the three names that were in the mix that were on Adam gazes list. Vance Joseph who's now the defensive coordinator in Arizona. Chuck Pagano who's the defensive coordinator in Chicago. And then Greg Williams who again, I think has considerable amount of leverage in his contract negotiations with the jets question number five is Chris from plane Ville at Chris plane Ville how much of Andy Reed's coaching style is predictable. See last week against the chargers. See last week chargers. Embellish belch. It be confident that read won't stray too far from the script hashtag game planning for the chiefs. Chris I would tell you that Andy Reid has any good job of tweaking things as route combinations in the way. He runs his offense and a week to week basis, and I can tell you for a fact that gave the colts fits last week through our little tweaks and how they use tyreek hill there were little tweaks in the route combinations were just little tweaks that through the colts off just enough that caused huge problems for them early in that game. And so I would expect the same thing this week that you're gonna see Andy Reid tweaking, his office not changing tweaking offense a little bit to throw the patriots off. It's worked..

"You the most money because I found. That. You know, not to be cliche. But a lot of people who make career decisions based on money and money alone. End up hating their job in a relatively short period of time. They did not make it with the purest of intentions, and the other thing that Colorado's think about is what's going to be the long term for me. He's not thinking about the long-term fifteen million dollars in making the as give him major league contract. He's only thinking about the next four years. He's not thinking about I mean factors ultimate maybe. And that's fine. I have no problem with that right now. He's saying right right now, it looks like you say to the draft. Here's what I want. I love football. But I can love baseball more. If you give me eight billion more dollars because I I worry about that whole as negotiation was about the draft. That's what it was about whether or not he would go to the draft. Now, he's going to the draft. And we'll see what happens. Just. Procedure games. Kids. Don't make the money will follow or you'll make the money work. If you go make a decision based on what you love to do. All right story. Number two is the latest on the Vic Fangio coordinator. Search seems like the Broncos are being super focused because they wanted munch act. They got money check yesterday. They've been going back and forth with the forty Niners. It does look like the forty nine. Well, it's doesn't look like they did the forty Niners did give quarterback coach. Rick scan. Carello permission to speak with the Broncos, which he has. Now, the latest from Mike Klis is that the Denver Broncos are interviewing Ed Donatello. Who is currently the defensive backs coach for the Chicago Bears served under Vic Fangio, not only in Chicago. But in San Francisco as well. And according to Mike cliffs, and according to anyone with eyeballs or ears. Ed Donatello is the favourite because they haven't interviewed anybody else nor have we heard that they have requested permission to interview anyone else. And if they do hire done until this would make the third Chicago coach they poached because they also they also hired Brandon Staley earlier today. As I believe they're deep defensive back coach. Okay. I believe that's what the position was that. They hired him for no wonder Matt Nagy so pissed off that Cody park. He's talking to me like he's like, I got my kicker who's going on national television. And I got all my coaches are being poached by our pets are falling off. I could've stayed in Kansas City, and I would be playing in the AFC championship coaching in it. Maybe Andy Reid retires. We haven't even talked about this. We're talking about Tom Brady and drew Brees like I've played this season out on Madden. Andy Reid retires after the chiefs win the Super Bowl. So there you go. Brennan's Staley was hired as the Outside Linebackers coach. No, that's right. Yeah. He's like he does. He he got the job. I'm here any totally looks like a kicker coach. Right. Do you think he walks up to Todd Davis? And Todd Davis says, you know, turn around and walk away outside linebacker coach your words mean nothing to me. He signed the contract. You says I'm good. Von Miller, Bradley Chubb, I'm good. But I'm just saying like if the outside linebacker coach comes up to an inside linebacker does the inside linebacker coach say shut up and keep walking I want. I go into pass coverage. You don't nothing about such things. Where we at don't let your dreams be dreams. So the the Broncos are interviewing schedule for those don't call it that and they're interviewing Donatello for the DC. No, other interviews that we were overtures have been made it sure looks like these are plan AB NC. And then we'll see if they happen fall through their promotions for both guys. So maybe that's the Broncos confidence showing through like, hey, you're DB coach your team hired truck Pagon over you. They had no intention of making us defensive coordinator will make you the defensive coordinator. And then hey, QB coach she wanted to be a QB coach for another gear. You wanna come be our offense coordinator? So maybe that's where why so few interviews have been requested. Maybe they feel like I think Donna tells a pretty sure thing scandal. I don't know what it is. I am finally score story. Number three, just playing consistently. Obviously.

"And it looks like the office decided they are basically playing to nineteen ninety two and ninety three Cowboys without the ninety two ninety three talent up. Wait tell if they're just gonna line up and walk out and be and what was telling Jerry Jones didn't speak to the media after the game. And he said last time he did that a lot of sweeping changes in the coaching staff. So maybe that's Jerry changes. I won't back to the show. I'm Jason Whitlock is Marcellus Wiley time to put on our thinking caps. Bucky? Brooks is back with us. We're joined now by USA. Today's finest words column Bill as you all know, I'm a journalist, and we've got our resident Ivy league room here. Columbia's very oh Marcellus Wiley for look. Big issues for. Vessel camp for Columbia grad. I know bring it on in. Oh, jen. Where'd you? Go to school way. I'm a Spartan Michigan. Eight east Lansing. Let's move to the NFL coaching carousel which is finally slowing down. After a busy week. That's all six head coaching vacancies still there. Now, just two jobs remaining with the Bengals expected to hire. Another Sean McVeigh clone in Rams decisions activity while the dolphins are expected to hire patriots linebacker coach and defensive play caller, Brian Flora's. A lot of people are up in arms because floors would be the only minority coach hired in season. This all five black coaches fired. But one of those fire coaches, Todd Bowles doesn't see it that way. I said there's only thirty two head dealt in the league. And there's a lot of people they could feel like they're discriminated against. And there's a lot of people that don't get a chance regardless of race. And he's just have to coach your hardest and do your best and the opportunity comes up, and you have a chance to grab it you grab it if not you'd be the best coach you can be. All right. This is a spicy topic. I'm gonna get a started by saying, look, I. I think context and perspective is important. And I think progress is not a year to year thing it has to be judged over time. And I think that coaching hires in the NFL particularly released African American coaches it's going to be just like the Dow Jones is the Dow up over a five ten twenty year window, or is it down? It can't be just a year to year thing. I think what happened this year five afro American coaches being that's an anomaly, and I think that the NFL in my view winning is so important, and there's so much money to be made. And there's so much money on the line. I just don't think these owners are sitting around all. I don't want to hire. Mike tomlin. I I don't wanna hire. Anthony Lynn, I just think these guys want to win. And I think if we look over the course of time, black coaches are making progress and will continue to make progress that point because that gives you perspective love that point. Progress success is not linear a lot of people think that every single year for you to progress. It means you have to be taking steps forward. No. There are times where you take a step forward. You take two steps back. But in the grand scheme of things that may be the best thing for you. So obviously, we know that there's an issue with black head coaches in NFL, but this year to use this as the indictment, I think is unfair. And I was showing you a list of the fire NFL coaches black and white and you come the quickly realize if you look at the top four three of them are white coaches, and what does that tell me the three of winning winning percentage are white coaches? So they're looking at white coaches and saying this blade is sharp as well. And you're a winning coach. So they're getting rid of the white coaches and a tune that even greater than the black coaches at turns a win percentage. The black coaches, unfortunately are all at the bottom turns a whimper. Which kind of justifying their firings. But I hear I hear the reaction. Hey, but they're not replacing them. We'll black coaches, which is a conversation. We need to have this is why think is taking time for black coaches to come through the pipeline..

"Busy day, J D O very busy day. I mean, I think the Vic Fangio news. I think last night or even yesterday, you got the sense that Elway was closing in on either Fangio or Mike munch shack. And I just think for Fangio he joins a great organization. That's only a couple years removed from winning a Super Bowl with some stuck defensive players. And he gets Gary kubiak to take care of the offense, which a lot of people. I know would would probably be upset that someone like that is forced on you. But think about it guys. It's one less thing for Fangio to worry about kubiak won a Super Bowl. He knows that offense. Like the back of his hand. He's got the relationship with John Elway some people might feel threatened. That kubiak is there. But look if Elway wanted kubiak to be the head coach guys you would have hired him. Right. So I think Fangio's in great shape. And now the question becomes what coaches go with him to Denver from Chicago. Because at Donatella someone that we've talked about for years who's kind of the the natural fit. If the bears resign him if he wants the job, I feel like promoting from within after you lost out on Todd Bowles is probably the best move. But there's no guarantee they keep Donna tell and who else goes Glenn Pires is someone that is highly thought of the linebackers coach that's been with Fangio since he got to Chicago in two thousand fifteen saw some pretty good coaches on the staff, but I'm just wondering what the staff's gonna look like once Fangio gets done filling his openings. What do you expect them to do? I mean, ultimately when you have to make when you have to make a kind of a prediction for who they will hire. And when it will happen. And who could you is there someone on the staff not named Donna tell that you could promote from with it though. I mentioned Glenn Pires. I kind of feel like he's the next guy. There's also J Rogers who a holdover from as you guys know, the John FOX era did a really good job on the defensive line for the last four years. I mean, those are more of the higher profile their Outside Linebackers coach is relatively new. So I think those are the guys you're talking about. I think it starts with dot atoll. There's Pires there's J Rogers. And then Tom if you want to go outside, which was their preference, Todd Bowles. Everyone knows the connection to Todd Bowles has with Matt Nagy that would have been a nice fit here. You have to look at some of the names in the schemes that they run the. Bears aren't going back to a four three. Right. I'm sorry. This is the best defense in the NFL. It's going to be a three four. It's a thirty four personnel. So, you know, like when I think of that, I don't know how attractive like a Steve Wilks would be because he runs a forty three. Right. Chuck pagano. In name, though, guys. Chuck McConnell was a terrific defensive coach in Baltimore before. We got the colts head coaching job. That's someone that might be worth an interview if it gets to that point Vance Joseph is a thirty four personnel guy. That's what he wants to run. He was just let go and then there's Greg Williams. Look, I know Greg Williams has got the connection with Ryan pace that goes back to New Orleans my feeling on that is, you know, the bears have done a really good job of having coaches under this head coach that don't rock the boat, right? Like guys that are quality guys work hard. No one's a showboat. It's just Fangio wasn't a showboat. I mean, he was highly thought of as evidence that the Broncos harder to be their head coach. But he wasn't a guy. Like look at me. Look at me guy. I get that sense. A little bit from Greg Williams. Don't you? Yeah. That he would suck all of the auction out of the oxygen out of the room. I know there's also Matt Burke who I think his his status in Miami right now is a bit tenuous. So there are experienced candidates out there. I just feel like for the sake of continuity, since you're not really going to be changing the defense a whole lot, right? I would prefer for them to promote from within. But but that just might not be possible defending again who Fangio takes and it would limit the disruption. And that's where my next question was going to be they have so much talent. And that such a rhythm going how much of a disruption. Do you thank removing Vic from this this scene could possibly be for them. Well, see I go back to what Fangio set a couple of weeks ago when he said what if I got lost on the way to the stadium. Couldn't be there for the game. It would still be our defense. But a defense. Always different a little bit depending on who's calling. It. It won't be exactly the same. It can't be it just won't. And now that I thought the Todd Bowles thing my first question for Todd Bowles would have been if you got the job guys. How do you go about putting your own stamp on a defense? That's already the best in the league. Right. Because everyone's going to do something different. I mean, you're not gonna hire. I'm just theoretically. Right. You're not going to go out and hire former NFL head coach like Todd Bowles or Chuck Pagano or Vance Joseph in say, here's pixel playbook, just go by this. That's how it works. That guy's gonna come in. He's going to say, hey, I want to try to make what is already great even better. But it doesn't always work out that way. So I I do think it is a disruption, and I think it'll be a bigger disruption depending on the number of. Assistance that Fangio takes with him to Denver. I know the bears defense was on their way down. But I felt like Mel Tucker did that you know, they tried to hard to be like levies defense without lovey running it and instead of Mel Tucker doing his own thing. I felt like they did what the previous regime did. And no one benefited from this about going from Rivera to Bob, right? I brought earlier on the shell decline that huge decline in. That was already made great defense with great players that weren't going anywhere like Erlanger and Tillman Briggs. And guys like that. And there was a huge decline. It. It makes a difference who's coordinating the defense because you have to have someone that everyone buys into an everyone bought in the Fangio just like everyone bought into Matt Nagy calling plays on offense. I think. Tell gets the job. I think the locker room bison. I think he is. He's been very quiet sort of a behind the scenes presence since he got here. But he has a lot of experience. He's a former coordinator highly respected. I think everyone buys in. And if you if you hire a former NFL head coach, I think everyone buys into for the most part. But again, I just think because their position the way they are. And because they were so successful. And because you're gonna have most of the same players could have a new safety. We'll see what happens with Asia, and ammos, there's always some turnover. That's inevitable. I would try to go from within. And one thing that the bears will pay they paid Fangio at ton of money. So it's an I don't think they would go on the cheap here because I think Matt Nagy knows just how important this decision is going to be let me ask you another name. You said they don't like anyone to rock the boat under this regime with Greg Williams. So would that ROY? Rule out Rex Ryan, which a lot of people are tweeting by listen. I think Rex does a great job for us on ESPN. I don't think that's what the bears are all about right now. I just don't feel that way. I I could be wrong, but the covering this staff this this head coach, it's such a different feel, and I just don't think they would want to bring someone in that brings that attention on themselves. I could be wrong, but everyone else on the staff look at it Fangio blends in Donna blends in Mark Helfferich blends in here, he stands one of the best offensive line coaches in the NFL you guys never heard from him this year. Right. I mean, these are really good coaches Dave Oregon's and a good job. Glenn priors has done a good job. And I'm just a if you're Mike furry the guy with the big guns former wide receiver. He does a good job. So, but but they're not like going out there like glory hounds. I think you run the risk of disrupting your chemistry when he started bringing glory. How are you? Do you expect the teams will take a run? It regard for maybe an offense coordinator spot or is hell fridge. Is there a risk that he may leave to be a head coach at the collegiate level? That's what I thought. I think if again we talked to Markelle fridge once a week. He's very interesting guy if I had to guess that probably would be his goal. I think he could absolutely get back into the college game. Because you know, his prominent Oregon guys is that he wasn't chip Kelly. Like, he's still did a pretty good job. He had him in the in the in the finals, I think one year. I mean, he he had a pretty deep when Marietta was his last year. So he wasn't like he was a failure. As a as a collegiate head coach. But I could see that. Now, maybe it would take one more year of the bears being good Tom for him to really kind of and self back up to where he's going to get one of those jobs. But yeah, I mean, I think that's a guy that again has the potential to to get a college job. Absolutely. When do you expect pace in negative, actually speak? I would I would. Think after this is resolved. But I think it has to happen within a week of the regular season ending. But I'm I'm gonna guess they need to resolve this defensive coordinator thing that's what they're working on right now. And when that's over. I could see that happening. I mean, I I'm hoping no later than Friday Wednesday. I would think if something gets done tonight or tomorrow, and then the two of them speak on Friday. I understand why they're not doing it right now. I mean, I think it's important that they filled this position I want. You guys rather have a new D coordinator in place. So you can ask them about the new D coordinator. I'm okay waiting a couple of days. My hope is Donna tell is convinced to stay here. That would be my my hope is what I agree with you. I just think again he really quietly does a good job with secondary. I mean, you had to all pros and prince amukamara had the best year. He's had in a long time, ammos became a really steady safety at Jackson yet fuller, and there wasn't a huge decline, by the way when Bryce Callahan got hurt at the Nickelback spot I thought for the most part except for the ten men on the field play Madison. Those guys did a really nice job. So I agree. And but look I think Vic is motivated to he wants to bring his guy. I'm sure Elway's giving him a nice budget for his assistant coaches, and we'll just see in the end who wins out JD anything else. I think I think we've pretty much covered it there. I would hope to have a resolution to this soon as in by the end of the work week. Hopefully, we're talking on Friday staff joining us. There you go. There's JD Jeff Dickerson all over the bears. I do other staff. Ronald this is exactly what you've been preaching about bears fans worried that Fangio is leaving. I've got a stat for you to easier mind. I also have Machado wa. Ooh. Everybody's attention Jonathan hood. Also, live and local at six it's Waddle and Silvy on ESPN one thousand four Nader. Vic Fangio leaves.

"He doesn't leave. He's such a good thing there with that defense, and you can tell I mean everywhere he's gone. He's had success. You know, he was great in San Francisco. I'm not sure what it was before that. But I know in San Francisco those five or six years they were really good on defense. And it's been the same way in Chicago. So I mean, you like to say it's not going to be different because it's the same scheme. It's the same same players, but it's not the same mind frame that scheme, you know, he knows certain situations. What to do you know how the game plan? So I mean as much I'd like to say, it's not gonna change. I would think it's gonna change a little bit. Maybe for the better. I don't know if that's possible would be better. But I have a hard time believing that what's his mind not running that defense. It'd be much better than it doesn't surprise you to know that he was part of the saints defensive coaching staff. He a linebackers coach back in the day. When it was Pat swilling von Ricky Jackson Jackson Sam they were good. How was that? Three four group has been around for he's been around for. I didn't realize he goes that far back because that's that'd be eighty early nineties late eighties. Right. Saints from eighty six to ninety four. Yeah. There you go. So he's been around. You know, he's saying some things, but yeah, that's the prize me. But he he's such a good defensive mind, and it football mind. I really mean, I obviously you wish pushing the basket and the job. But I really hope we say Chicago, they're building some really good there. Hey, I was interested as well. I mean for I'm sure you you had to defend every type of quarterback imaginable when you look at when you look at Nick foles, dude Meyer, what he's able to do all things considered for sure it's unbelievable to do. Just the big games. And I was talking to my wife about this Saturday Saint how I if if wants it's fully healthy right now, you can't take full out. How do you replace the guy who's played that? Well, I think he's what five zero five one six to one with all their last three games playoff games, especially because they had to put them together the playoffs, and she she shows up. You know, we didn't play great Sunday. I don't think you feel a couple of throws it you like to have back, but he played well enough for them to win. And that's what he's. He's just found ways to win games. So they didn't run a great Sunday. Not many people do against the bears, but we find ways to win. And I think the players believe in him. That's another thing that. You you kind of have going for you. When you have a quarterback the players believe they're going to win every game. What is your thought about all these young offensive coaches getting hired for head coaches seems like the defensive coordinator is getting a Nord these days? Yeah. Well, it's an office of Sobhi all the points score. People want to throw the ball over the Sean McVay what he's done. Unbelievable. Thirty two thirty three. Yeah. Early even coach Nagy's, you know, he's young for head coaches. He's forty or forty one. So you look at what they've done. I don't know if it's just they're smart. They know it was smart and everybody else. I don't know. But coach Peyton not young. He's been around for a long time scoring some points. But I think it's just a it's a change that you see the NFL going through changes with with young coaches. I know that I saw Arizona hired the guy from Texas Tech after they fired him. So I just it's different to me. I don't understand it. You know, I I know that college coaches score a lot of points. They're supposed to do. But his NFL there's some things that transfer over. But not a lot in my opinion. I let you go who do you see squaring off in Super Bowl fifty three? Oh my gosh. It's gonna be hard to beat the saints in that don't I'm afraid there a few times, and they're tough. Goes my heart. I'm go Kansas City. I'm a huge fan. They got you know, coach totes over there. I'm a big Andy Reid fan. So I'm gonna go with the with the chiefs in the saints number one to number one seats, although India's good right now. I realize how good they were front until Sunday or Saturday whenever the game. Yeah. They won nine of their last ten to end the season. They were one in five or something like that. Someone told me they they picked up the bears colts have a rematch screwed that up. Holidays were good Christmas and New Year's there over it's good. Yeah. My kids are getting older now. So it's just a little different. They I'm not that cool right now. Back in school. They started back to school. They that was a great thing. That's awesome. Brian. You're the best. We appreciate the time. As is as dry take care. Bryner lacquer the hall of Famer it's for him. You see he was nervous out to the field thing about was so cool watching he and dick Butkus walk onto the. Should do that every game. Now kind of like the twelfth man where someone raises a flag the bears should do that say him and dick Butkus. Grammatically correct. This him and dick Butkus when they came out being there was like people already loud because they bear raid sirens. And then those two came out and the place. I saw it went absolutely nuts. Rex Ryan was not happy that Mike single Terry. Wasn't there? He wanted single Terry to be a part of all the the middle linebackers two kiss to signal to lacquer. I was disappointed. Barry Minter wasn't. Hey, guys, say Jones. It selvi. Let me ask you something. Have you ever had manscaping.
All 12 playoff coaches are tied to Bill Walsh or Parcells
"The head coaches in the playoffs that season come from the coaching. Trees of other Bill Walsh for Bill Parcells Abella check. Anthony Lynn, Sean Payton. All coached under Parcells Jason Garrett and Bill O'Brien are further down the Parcells coaching tape. But they all come from the Bill Parcells coaching tree. And that means the other seven come from the Bill Walsh coaching tree. Andy Reid coached under Mike Holmgren was Walsh disciple. Four others come directly from Andy. That's John Harbaugh. Matt Nagy Doug Peterson and Frank Reich. So as we prepare to watch these games this weekend and throughout these playoffs. There is still the influence of those two legendary preeminent coaches of the eighties. If you will in Walsh and parcels what what thoughts Trump to your mind? When you see that? Look, I know that Bill walls is someone who is highly highly respected by guys like parcels end by guys like Bill Belichick. He's at the very very top of this whole thing. And they as far as situational football's concern, and as far as really just being able to build an entire football federation. He's set the standard everyone else is trying to follow now. And now is it is pretty cool though to watch kinda how bills people have done how Andy Reed's people were doing. I mean, it's it's really neat. Because really there's only so many things you can do in full. There's only so many formations you can come up with and so many defenses you can run then it just comes down to good play styles. Make fights right and Walsh that the west coast against the smashmouth run the ball in play defense style of ourselves. And if you look at it that still holds true today. Most of the Andy Reid disciples over there. Bill walsh. They're going to get the ball out. Quick. Quick eater intermediate passing game highly rhythmic west coast offense. Then you look at the Bill Parcells disciple disciples, we're going to run the football player action shots down the field and had this big physical defenses that try to beat you up and want to make this game playing the phone booth. You've heard me say this on this show that if the guys that are really good the great coaches right now, and the guys that are going to continue to be one of those eight teams looking for aid coach on finding the guy. That's the more Steelers. Parting ways with linebackers coach Joey porter lions jam. Bob quinn. Standing by quarterback Matthew Stafford despite a disappointing has campaign, Patrick Mahomes. "In what he was in Dallas one of the league's best rushing defenses. Strong linebacker group, Sean Lee, and Anthony Hitchens and Jalen Smith back linebackers finish top three tacklers on the team. I like Matt abor flus and oh, by the way, look what he's done with the colts this year. Prior to Dallas. He was the linebackers coach with the Browns. Spent eight seasons of the university of Missouri. So she had head coach defensive coordinator safeties coach. Before that spent nine seasons at his alma mater university of Toledo. Grad assistant, full-time spot is a recruiting recruiting coordinator again Outside Linebackers. Lord knows this team needs to needs help at the linebacker position from a coaching and talent standpoint, Matt Uber flu if you're looking for somebody on the other side of the ball forty eight county in that sweet spot. Are we said the last last what eight or nine years the average age of a coaching hire was forty six and a half he'd be right in that range success this year in the NFL track record of success with the Dallas Cowboys plugged into the linebacker position. Kind of like that my two names for what that's worth up next. We go off the beaten path who wants to end the weekend or go into the weekend ranting and raving about things I put this together it came to be in three different ways.
