When <Speech_Male> when i <Speech_Male> when i was there i <Speech_Male> did feel like the fitness <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> level and <Speech_Male> training when i <Speech_Male> came to college <Speech_Male> was a step back <Speech_Male> from what i was doing <Speech_Male> in <Speech_Male> sweden but <Speech_Male> I think <Speech_Male> college is <Speech_Male> a great <Speech_Male> pathway to <Speech_Male> to make it as a <Speech_Male> professional athlete. Just <Speech_Male> because you go <Speech_Male> to college <SpeakerChange> does not <Silence> mean that you cannot make <Speech_Male> it through <Speech_Male> no. There's there's <Speech_Male> plenty guys make <Speech_Male> the non see <Speech_Male> so many especially <Speech_Male> the dope side <Speech_Male> there. <Speech_Music_Male> There's so many <Speech_Music_Male> Which is <Speech_Music_Male> great to see <Speech_Music_Male> and at least it gives people <Speech_Music_Male> an opportunity to get <Speech_Music_Male> a college <Speech_Music_Male> get a degree <Speech_Music_Male> and <Speech_Male> give them something <Speech_Male> to fall back on. Because let's <Speech_Male> be honest. Not everybody <Speech_Music_Male> makes it as a <Speech_Male> as a top <Speech_Male> doubles player. <Speech_Male> Top hundred player. <Speech_Male> It's it's <SpeakerChange> really <Speech_Male> tough. No absolute <Speech_Male> abs- <Speech_Male> absolutely not enough. <Speech_Male> I've always said <Speech_Male> when <Speech_Male> parents <Speech_Male> asked me what the kid <Speech_Male> needs to do. I always <Speech_Male> kinda wanna tell <Speech_Male> them as like you do realize <Speech_Male> you you. You're <Speech_Male> pushing your child <Speech_Male> to go into sport. <Speech_Male> Where <Speech_Male> about four <Speech_Male> hundred people in <Speech_Male> the world <SpeakerChange> actually <Silence> make money. <Speech_Male> I think <Speech_Male> you're being very optimistic. <Speech_Male> There <SpeakerChange> four hundred <Silence> people <Speech_Male> know. But <Speech_Male> i'm like four <Speech_Male> hundred people in the <Speech_Male> world is professionally <Speech_Male> making money. If you take <Silence> out coaches players <Speech_Male> men <Speech_Male> and women four hundred <Speech_Male> people. No more <Speech_Male> are actually <Speech_Male> putting money in the bank <Speech_Male> in <SpeakerChange> the world <Silence> in the sport of tennis. <Speech_Male> It's <Speech_Male> still it's <Speech_Male> a tough decisions. That's <Speech_Male> why did degree <Speech_Male> and see so <Speech_Male> many tennis players. They do finance <Speech_Male> than end up <Speech_Male> being successful finance. <Speech_Male> And so <Speech_Music_Male> yeah. Just <Speech_Male> give yourself a few <Speech_Male> options. <SpeakerChange> Unless <Speech_Male> you're raffin the dial <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> when when <Speech_Male> when you come out of the <Speech_Male> room and you ranked two <Speech_Male> hundred and seventy in the world. <Speech_Male> <Speech_Male> It's crazy with dementia. <Speech_Male> The story <Speech_Male> here today with somebody <Speech_Male> had <Speech_Male> to play a <Speech_Male> a phone <Speech_Male> exhibition match in <Speech_Male> spain. I was tim <Speech_Male> henman. I think an exhibition <Speech_Male> in march and <Speech_Male> correct. You couldn't <Speech_Male> show opposite. He got some <Speech_Male> thirteen year old <Speech_Male> in a fourteen year. <Speech_Male> Old in ann <Speech_Male> hammond. Attila <Speech_Male> was having there. <Speech_Male> Better not be quote on <Speech_Male> this but he <Speech_Male> was like he's like <Speech_Male> a easy on this <Speech_Male> kid and <Speech_Male> just see i give him a few <Speech_Male> games comes out and <Silence> gets beaten to and love. <Speech_Male> Oh <Speech_Male> just <Speech_Male> it's just the guys. <Speech_Music_Male> Just a different <Speech_Male> machine <Speech_Male> must feel horrible. <Speech_Male> <Advertisement> Tim if it <Speech_Male> was him. I'd say <Speech_Music_Male> it still feels <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> horrible. <Music> <Music> <Advertisement> <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Music_Male> <Advertisement> <Speech_Music_Male> Just quickly <Speech_Male> jumping in here. <Speech_Male> My sources <Speech_Male> for that story <Speech_Male> were wrong. <Speech_Male> Let me tell <Speech_Male> you what i could find on <Speech_Male> the web. So inmate <Speech_Music_Male> says no one pat <Speech_Music_Male> cash. And boris becker <Speech_Music_Male> was set to play an exhibition. <Speech_Male> Match and new york <Speech_Music_Male> shootin injury. <Speech_Male> Becker had <Speech_Music_Male> to pull out so <Speech_Male> they suggest that cash <Speech_Male> play against the island's <Speech_Male> most prompts <Speech_Male> in youngster. Who was rough <Speech_Male> around. The dow cash <Speech_Male> agreed to <Speech_Male> play the fourteen year. Old <Speech_Male> phosphor two <Speech_Male> sets and the tie-break <Speech_Male> later the grand <Speech_Male> slam champ at just <Speech_Male> lost to <Speech_Male> thou on <Speech_Male> this credible source was <Speech_Music_Male> roland garros. So <Speech_Music_Male> i hope <SpeakerChange> stories <Speech_Music_Male> true. Now <Music> <Speech_Music_Male> <SpeakerChange> <Speech_Music_Male> <Speech_Music_Male> do you have <Speech_Male>

"I think because of how much it meant to me to actually play well at home nice. That's very very special. Remember the friend of mine. James clusky played a doubles. I'm not sure if you know romero a member him to me when they five you gotta get on a flight over here right away determined effort like it's about what the white party and just to set up a women and everything i gotta get over here and that's like i just can't go but and then i don't think he played the year after so sometimes he's gotta take those opportunities and go. Yeah it's like The tournament the tournament ida t should once And it said Boss everything you've is true. I love well it from what i've heard it's true. So yeah look. Is there any big regret threat your whole career ending. That stands out that you'd love to change one thing. I wish i would have started training. harder much earlier. I wish i would have had the. I wish i would have been humble enough to understand how much effort it really goes into it. How much i should have done. I i honestly do think i would have had a crack at the top hundred. If i really would have known i was very. I wasn't even close to being trained enough. As as i should have been To to even try and singles. Tough to like i didn't we didn't have any money at all. I've i've just. I've done everything on my own so to speak. I've done the league tennis thing. Finance myself I i've never gotten anything from the federal aviation so it's It's a very expensive sport tennis. And and it is and really always a matter of the best one coming through. it's it's it's it's. It's a very very difficult. Toss in the beginning. But i. I really do wish. Even as a jew era i would have would have Spent you know spend more time training. I remember when i was young us. I was always saying that weakens are your. You don't work on the weekends. My dad doesn't my mom does work on the weekends so i don't play tennis on the weekends. Which is stupid. Meanwhile the you guys are killing themselves in the work and even harder to weekend. Yeah exactly exactly. You didn't do too. Let's be honest now. it's. I've done much better than i thought I never thought i would win a grand slam first. Wimbledon finals was a massive surprise but Yeah it's it's it's funny how things turn out. But i'm but i am a firm believer as in if you really invest in yourself and you dedicate that investment to to really being your life. Then then good things will happen. I think you've done well there and ago. Peter smith tear. His question. says you've mostly dismissed college. Tennis is that true. I have mostly dismissed college. What is what does. This is not an advocate of college tennis. No that's not true at all. That's not true at all. Yeah no no no. No i think college tennis is Is an amazing way. A path to become a professional tennis player Especially nowadays where. We're tennessee so physical and you can only do so much every year to get your your body strong as it needs to be so going to college is Is is a great way to get matches to get training and to use that as a pathway into your professional career. And what i have said is that i am not. I'm not a firm believer of of Staying all years. I mean i left after year off Just because you go to college doesn't mean you have to stay four years to do it if you feel. You're ready after two years to even.

"Amazing. I was quite amazing. What what a feeling you could probably you know. I i'd say all your dreams came true their angelic and did you find your tennis. Got better after that win for the next few years after you got back to normal after the french. i don't know if you've got better To be honest My results after that haven't really matched my expectation. I don't know it was the beginning of the end or anything like that I can't say that i that i got much better. I mean smarter. Yes but that's the thing to do with age. The more you compete. There's a thing also where like There's a balance there because as you get older things tougher so you have to see okay. Is it my age. That's holding me back so that i'm playing worse than my better player but my h is kind of not letting me and then also the older you get. It's almost like it's easy to get nervous because because like the older you get the more tennessee played and therefore you know more of what can actually go wrong so instead of having the ignorance of youth of just i'm just gonna hit the ball there and that's not gonna come back you. There are thoughts. And i'm had this discussion with other former players like there's thoughts but if i go there he might do this or he'll go there and then you have this equation in your mind because you've seen all these scenarios throughout your career and it kind of takes the focus off your own tennis on your own shots which is stupid but I think is kind of human behavior. I i told you. Go come from my wife. The doctor and i read some books and so novels abet medicine and that they're always bod stories and all of a sudden you take like you know the more you read the more you learn the more you take. This can go wrong. But another -taying abed agent. Which i want to ask. You do feel like you know this could be my last french open like let's take federal. Now he wants to grand slam records put. Every time he plays the last one get injured. He could be finished. So how much pressure does that. I've gone through that as well. I think australia this year. Waas that for me. This is the last one i really want to do. Well and it really. I'm going to say it again. Like it really is a cancer for your tennis Because it makes you focus on how well you you want to play. And that is something. You're never in control of really. You can't set the standard of where your tennis is to be that day. You know it's it's kind of. It's all in the preparation you make and then then you see what end product comes on on the match day. So that's what has occurred to me and every time it does occur to me. I'm out but i've heard from before i remember. I played with them. Um for a year and then the next year after that he was telling me all this that you have this feeling that this might be the last one and you get nervous and Tried to kind of have that information coming into my own. You know middle age but it's Walton said sneaks in. It's it's tough to get out. You think it's really hard you just kinda. That's what i was gonna ask. How can you wash it out. It's really hard. I mean for me it. It also comes with preparation. I have to say the more of actually train them made sure that i'm hitting the ball. Well in practice my body's feeling good and moving well then then feel those factors kind of take over And it doesn't really pop into my mind anymore so I've literally just tried to be even more prepared than i than i usually am. So damore to right so if you do over like over the last chance of the cancer is coming into your head. Put his his. Been your most phone doubles guy to play with. I mean most successful was obviously My partnership with to cow. We we we did have a lot of fun with each other Always as it as any partnership you know you have your ups and downs but That was that was a lot of fun. Shore play with joanna's once when he when we decided to make the comebacks with dot com hope and we played together for that one. That was amazing. That was a lot of fun reaching the finals when he had been retired for. I don't know how many years We were paying full crowds in stock open. That was that was that was absolute I used to love on. He was he. The dc doubles record. Didn't they days doubles record. Yes you can. That's that's that's very rude of you to say by. Yes sorry no yeah. I can't remember to l. memories of a fried. But i remember he picked up some good i. I couldn't tell him any slams. He won one. He won all slams and all masters. It's a decent so it's a decent record number one in the world to your friends. Would all bjorkman engquist soderling at the moment. Who what thomas johansson. I remember i used to love thomas enquist when i was young and that's -ffiliated with acid started and funny enough reduce it with us at the moment and they dig deep into me. Where did you first hear about six. That comes back enquist. What's thomas enquist up to these days. Well he's he's playing well not this year obviously but he's been playing some legends events He He is now tournament director for stockholm open. They switched They switched owners this year. I'm they were supposed to be the first foreign but always the that van gogh counsel as well. So that's what he does. He's spends his time in exile provence in france and Stockholm knife stuck omer. You say dot busted which one the prefer. Well i grew up in boston to be honest So we moved from stock. Hours was three or four down to the south of sweden. And then we moved to stockholm. Sorry moved to boston when i was When i was ten. I think live there ever since uh sins then from there other move to london them back to dot com so i really grew up so that tournament has always had an amazing place in my heart. It's that is a very very small coastal city that comes to life during the summer and this event is the pinnacle of that so the whole the old town lips for these couple of weeks When it really happened so for the tournament. I was a ball boy. For the tournament days capping played our mascot. So on that seneca. I've i've done pretty much any everything in it took me so long..

"I've done it and the body. Golf to boil the mind enough to bile. It even went to the point. I'm going to be honest here And i don't wanna insult anybody with what i'm gonna say. I hope Raven eric can handle this. But i remember going into the semifinal i think mueller. We played labrum. Who and i think. Class and buddha had beaten bob. And mike and i remember going into the match that i wish bob and mike would win with a one because then if we were in the semi's there'd be less pressure from the final and it'll be more accepting to lose against bob and mike than to lose to eric and even kosten really want four losses. And then yeah. So that's that's even how my mind worked at that time and then then finally I kind of under stood during during my finals. And wimbledon all these legends had. Come up to the swedish guys. Jonas who was with me and australia and and elting powers all these guys. They always and todd woodbridge. I think they always kept saying look. Enjoy the final. Enjoy the match ours. Always so focused about playing. Well i had to play well with is the wrong mindset when you feel like you have to play well it never happens and then i remember actually kind of getting what they said me. I'm just gonna enjoy playing tennis. And i remember sitting in a changeover. Labor mid match and i think and this is pretty cool actually night match rod laver in melbourne. "Company. So that's that's a good thing to helps either way but Yeah so quickly to the z. Open two thousand fourteen. What was it like to to win. A grand slam relief. That was just released. The media moment was just you four. Obviously just come you own the world literally and feel everybody's looking up to you Which is not true. But that's the feeling you have but then you know in the days after in the coming months after it was it was just released. I even struggled a lot for months and months to even be a decent competitive player. I didn't the engine. Wouldn't start for me and i was for for many months. I was a very good draw like. Let's get robert i read. Yeah everybody he can't play anymore. Let's get him free free points free points and money did you really care Yeah i mean. I hate to lose. So it's really tough but i also knew something was going on with me that i couldn't really control i didn't have the tools to deal with I mean not many guys win. Their first grand slam wonder thirty six. I think it was thirty six So it's a long time to wait and with finals that i had and stuff So it was really tough. I'm very very strict. About my matchdays. And everything i make sure i have everything in my head by needs to be there. Whatever and all these stuff my drinks and then we played rotterdam S the first tournament author After australia and i get to the match. I don't even have my head with meena bag and and the okay so after that israel realize okay. Something's happening. I was training a straining hard still but then during the matches there wasn't really nervous before i was i was sleeping quite okay. Which which is which is not good and and so it was just it was just. It was very weird. I did not find my game for for months and months. It was really really tough i would. I would say like at the french. I was starting to become a decent partner again. Okay you're like he probably losing your partner as well after this. You think everybody wants to play with me now but for those. That don't know you had tree wimbledon finals before that we yeah and either mixed fine and other mixed fun last year one and just last year. Okay but you'd tree finals. Coming into your four your. It must get harder and harder when we're going to win one you know you're putting yourself in the position so i see where the relief do you for came and dan yes..

"Smith who most of my friends who come from college tennis olive unbelievable double scales. Well i was always an offensive attacking player. So i was that minds. There was always there. What happening college. I would say there was so much more. Focus on your netplay than than what. I was used to Back home you would never have a practice just dedicated to to your netplay clay and when you came to college it was literally have hours of just crossing and positioning and all that stuff. So i i learned that part of for sure but Might double skills than of of literally feel like i've developed them at every stage of my career and just kind of added onto it. So it's college was for shore a really great part in my learning of doubles. But then you learn. I think you learn if you can distance yourself from your matches you learn. The most from matches saw playing a lot of matches and against a lot of people. I think that really developed skills the most and what you mean by distance yourself. Well because you. You don't really learn a lot from when you win. It's kind of when you loose or really struggle in a match actually win. But it's when you lose you. Will you have to really see what didn't work what worked and it's it's easier to debt sect loss. I feel than a win. And that's what i mean you have to distance yourself Obviously it hurts to lose but have to able to look back at what you did in In a distant ways to speak like so you're not really emotionally invested in the loss. When you're looking at what what really worked and didn't work emotional. Decisions are are a cancer for athletes. I would say true true you did you find yourself going off in. Tangents are benders after losses are your bit more controlled i wouldn't i don't i wouldn't go out. Find a bar and get smashed. Like that was really media. Would i still have struggles sleeping after loose. Because i dissect everything so much and thinking. I should've gone this and that was kind of funny now on started coaching a bit. And i'm helping kula so sadly he lost yesterday and then find myself at night. It's like thinking about his match. What what. I could have said differently. And maybe i could have said that he wouldn't have hit this shot at this moment. So it's I don't think i can escape this. I'm going to have a few sleepless nights in the future of my life as well then to put you under pressure but duck. That's as you say that's part of layered and being able to dissect it but we did have a question from peter smith to was your kosher pepperdine and for those that don't know peter was successful college tennis coach but he want to know what would it key factors from you. He said from gone from above average town junior who went to college to be in a grand slam champion for you. What were two major milestones. Along. that's. I was expecting a much worse question. Thank you peter. Dot is the second one that has to be more this. There's got to be in there somewhere. What i found was like i talked about was detected my game a lot and a lot of times now giving myself credit for how good i am So to speak. Evan believed in myself enough. I mean that has to do with the where you come from. An upbringing obviously I had a Older brother youngest sister were both one in sweden. And i wasn't really anything in junior so things like this kind of stick with you. But what i really learned was that really helped us. That really became one of the hardest working double guys on tour. I feel i can really say that because it is true and I was playing with the akron yemen. for a couple of years and we he had a fitness and physio guy that was amazing. Nice and he invited me to helsinki. 'cause i was overweight as well. Once i got into doubles and so i went to think-i for two months. November december analytically trained Six to ten hours a day. And i really made a decision like okay. I have to make this. Because i felt like these guys. That are ahead of me I feel like. I hit the ball better than them. But why am i not winning. This got to be something there. And then i. I just went into this training regime and i stuck with it. The whole time Got interested in in what i need to do. And what helps. What kind of stretching strengthening helps and from that point on it was just. I kind of started climbing the rankings and i set goals for myself to take ten spots at a time and in the beginning like if to stare at the points in the ranking is it. It's impossible you like how am i gonna make eight hundred points. It's impossible. I win this tournament. I get i get eighty so he can't stare at that so i was just taking ten spots at a time when i was playing the match that had in front of me and it surprisingly enough Hard training pays off on for me with a heart. Training was also the best mental training for me. When i felt that i was the most prepared and i had over ahead trained more than my opponent Or at least. I told myself that i did. And i believe that. I did so that really That really made me a better player and when you have the bigger match than that is just easier when you feel that you're prepared. It's it's it's just easier to play. Well you have that confidence but obviously you were doing the writing as well. We can all trained really hard and push us to the max put you gotta be doing the right thing for your gamer for your body. So it's it's very easy to train hard. It's very easy to get sore. But you're not supposed to get sore you know it's it's very very easy to train hard but you have to. You have to. You have to train the right way. And that's that's where it helped y'all who was the fitness guy. Who is the fitness guy. He he helped me a lot of knowledge there then later in my career. I hired oddly. Gillam who who was robbing settlings fitness guys. Well and he helped me so much. He is helping me so much. He's really a part of the reason. Why can physically compete at my age with these young puppies on tour so i i did i did. I did hire the right people as well. So you have to. You have to invest in yourself. Otherwise you're not gonna reach your potential goals that you've said no.

"What's your secret if it doesn't hurt you. You're not doing it right now. I learned in my career. I would say learned too late. But i learned Really what it takes how much you have to train and and then you know you who while you're out while i think you should look at what other people doing how much they're doing even though during competition that is not really so much hard training but you get an idea and then you kind of put that into your own program What what what you have to do and what you should do so What i have done since. I really started working out hard. Is that i pretty much do something every day. Even on a day off there is something that'll be an hour by. Gory is just stretching session or something to do something every day. Okay and before. You didn't do as much every you didn't train is consistently back when you're younger. I thought i did. I thought i trained hard as a junior. I thought it's been hard in college. I thought i'd train howard futures. I thought i'd train harney then challenges than everybody every time you made that step up you kind of realize like oh shit. They're training much already here. And then you get another another level and then you get today dp and you go like it's impossible. It's physically impossible to try and this hard but alias and the body is amazing and it's just the matter of you getting used to it and I was lazy and the beginning in the early days of my tennis career. So to speak and really wish i Wasn't who knows. I might have been to fifty in the world and singles if i would have been training. Did you get up and singles. Three on three or nine. I think which is Really not good and just decided you. How was your doubles rank. Higher at the time no not really i was just always better in doubles. Even juniors back only sweden. we have four events. I don't know you know for national grasslands or whatever you should call him. I guess every country has these big national tournaments and never does those in singles one them all in doubles. I think jimmy. Same thing in college really. We'll like one or two or three. We were in those positions in their country the whole time and just kind of always went that way and but you know everybody wants to make it in single so i kept trying. Keep trying it on. It is made a decision that i was gonna stop tanking in in doubles to be able to reach the qualifying event of the next week and then Once i made that decision kind of really fast for me and.
