"So the tax bill now here Bob Corker adult daycare he tweeted once the that's what trump needed all the time Bob corker was almost sort of like was the spoiler on the tax bill and he was for a while a hero. So you know Steve Mnuchin I guess there was some possibility maybe that with his brains. Might stand in trump's way and then but obviously, we let go of that pretty quickly after Charlottesville but Bob Corker came up as a possible possible kind of you know that he might stand up to him and be able to stand up to him. What happened here with corker just kinda distinctly yet. There was a point early on in the discussions around trump's tax plan where the bill the. Plan needed to go through I. Think it was Budget Committee coworkers on that committee. They need his vote he's Fema Mus Deficit Hawk I think he said something like You know we talk about the sugar side of things, but we need to talk about the spinach. So he gets called into Mitch McConnell's office. The door closes to me is in there to ten minutes pass he walks out. and. He is going to support this bill what the heck happened no one knows I mean we'll obviously Bob corker. To me and Mitch McConnell. No but anyone on the other side of the door. This is Bob Corker version. Of Lindsey. Graham's golf game with trump where he came back lied about how much tr-. How you know trump had beaten him so brutally and then never said a word against trump again corker continued to distance himself from trump but clearly. Something happened in the room that let him get in line I mean maybe maybe that's where he decided. He wasn't going to run again and he would throw this victory to trump and I don't know I don't know. It was trump hassling him with the little. You know he's like, Adam Schiff and some others Marco Rubio he's someone that trump in with his infinite sophistication and maturity criticizes for his height. Was He tweeting about little corker before this I can't get into that level of detail because I wasn't the corker reporter yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Different reporter. But what I can tell you is that there was discussion because corker such a deficit. Hawk. There was discussion at some point about putting in a trigger so that if the bill was passed, if it generated more than a certain amount of debt, this trigger would go off and. Something would be like like I think the debt would be capped in some way. So I think what happened was that he was assured that there would only be a certain amount of debt debt you know the bill would generate enough economic growth that the bill would pay for itself. So he thinks this trigger is going to happen and then they get his you know green light to move forward and the trigger not become part of the ultimate legislation. Wait you can't be telling me that trump and McConnell brew their promised to someone in the history trump cast. We've certainly never heard about man of his word. Donald trump breaking a promise even to Republicans the tax bill is passed..

"Yes, you are. Thank you for coming by so The FBI building that I looked up the FBI building said. Well, what's Ah. How old is that thing? I've been by it. It looks like it's A lot newer than a lot of the buildings that you see in D. C and I was surprised I was rooting about Pennsylvania Avenue. And The article I was reading talked about when John Kennedy After his inauguration up on the West steps of the Capitol. And you know how new presidents come down Pennsylvania Avenue, heading from the Capitol building up to the White House, and so I don't know if he got out and walked like some of them do now, but he was riding down Pennsylvania Avenue. He and Jackie Then he's looking around, he says. Boy, this street over on the right here is just a bunch of dilapidated old buildings. Well, I hadn't been in Washington, DC in 1960 But apparently it was President Kennedy that looked and said, This is terrible. This this main road between the White House and the Capitol. Looks all dilapidated. All these buildings are run down on one side of the street, but not on the other. So the one side so he gets to work, and he tells somebody, he says, Let's see if we can spruce up Pennsylvania Avenue. What do we need for federal buildings that We want to build well. Uh, the FBI is currently housed in the Department of Justice and they are out of room. So they need a new building. So they started this. In 1963. And That was the design. His president Kennedy wanted to get something going. It took them. Until 1975. Who Actually, the problem was. Was that the design process? It sounds like a bunch of Keystone cops that they were all running around. Everybody was taking their finger in the design for this building. It's okay. Kennedy. He dies. He gets killed Johnson. Nixon. Nixon got involved. It kept on going on. And finally, 1975 Gerald R. Ford finally was The president when they finally got the FBI building, opened in 1975. It's 2,000,800 square feet. They have A secure system of elevators in corridors. For keep the public out of the big secret areas for the For the FBI. They have three floors below ground. I think it's eight floors above sodas, 11 floors to this building too big building. Then they have a garage below the three floors that are below ground. Underground parking garage. I don't know what's wrong with this building. They say it's near the end of its useful life span. And the reason why they give it is because ofthe deterioration due to deferred maintenance at mediocre design. Okay, so it was designed by The Keystone Kops. But it's a 2.8 million square foot building 11 stories. And so now, I don't know what is up with the president is adamant about a new building. And he's so adamant that apparently his word too. His chief of staff, Mark Meadows, into his Treasury secretary, Steve Mnuchin, is get this in the next Corona virus of relief bill. And everybody Mitch McConnell says. No way. Where are only we're on Lee doing Corona Virus relief stuff here. And even Marsha Blackburn, who's a big supporter of the president. She says. This kind of extraneous stuff needs to be left for a different bill. Bear in mind for everyone case of covert we've had in the state. We've had 33 individuals that have been economically impacted. They've been furloughed. They've lost theirjob. They've seen their wages cut and as we have worked on this package over the past couple of weeks I think members of the Republican Conference have been pretty specific on this. We wanted to get people back to work Children back to school. And provide clarity on how to use the money that is already in the pipeline. And as we have met, we've continued to say those three Things this should be targeted. It should be limited. It should be specific. We should have this very specific and it should be for getting people back to work. Children back to school and clarity on how to use the money in the process. So all these extraneous things that end up being very similar to earmarks. We need to make certain we leave that discussion for another day. Okay. Should be simple is it should be a center and, you know people are saying, Look, we need liability protection. We need regulatory relief. Let us get Cem. Tax credits like the payroll tax credit to incentivize people going backto work. Let us get a tax credit for what we're spending for covert compliance to make our workplaces safe. So she's not happy about it. She's upset. She's talking about the people that are hurting because of the virus. Man. There's a great article today about not only Mitch McConnell Going? No way. We're not putting that This is about the virus and about helping people. Now Senator Richard Shelby from Alabama. A pretty important guy because he is the chairman of the Appropriations Committee. They decide when checks are being cut. And he said, This is not a priority, not a Republican one. Then Lindsey Graham. Golf buddy of the President's says. I don't know that makes no sense to me. I'd be fine with stripping it out. So there's something this is apparently a fixation. And it has to be something to do with the fact that the president being a real estate developer is looking at this property. And has something up his sleeve about this property has been fixated on a new FBI building. It was. It was opened in 1975. My gosh are buildings that are well over 100 years old. In New York and Washington. And all kinds of older cities that are they're fine. No, no, no. They go in and they have rewired him and they've re plumb them and they've renovated them And they spent a lot of money. But they're they're still there. And they're they're good. I don't know why we want an FBI building for a building that was built in 1975 finished in 1975. I don't It's a mystery. Then I doubt that you will see that get through this legislation. They got bigger fish to fight over between the $3 billion.3 trillion dollar version coming from the House and the $1 trillion deal coming from The Senate may be the president just looked at it says what's 1.5 1,000,000,000..

"So Dr Ryan wearing getting that two to three week period. What do you make of that? I don't know what to make of it, but just not the first thing that's been incredibly difficult to interpret in terms of what the president said he means little fancy has behind almost every statement. He makes about this Anthony Saudi said just two weeks ago. That we can, we can expect to see a hundred thousand new confirmed tested. Cases every day. Which means that's about a tenth of what the real numbers, because not everybody gets tested, so we could be sitting a million new cases a day within the next few weeks I have no idea what the president's talking about, but it's not based on evidence is not based on science or any of his advisors. We are very concerned. That were really only the very beginning still of this first wave, which is really going to very severe extremes in south versus everybody knows I know where the information is coming from. The president has been repeating over and over again that everything's Fine Brian. Alexi you've been on the broadcast enough to know that I usually try to tamp down and diminish any national polls first of all one hundred nineteen days out second of all. We don't have a national election. We hold fifty state elections having established that. What do the battlegrounds look like to you right about now? I mean I. Think those are all totally fair in good caveats to have when we're talking about polling that I. Think no one can help bring up after twenty sixteen alone, but the polling numbers are different than what we saw in two thousand sixteen, and the circumstances are totally different than what we saw in two thousand sixteen. The battleground polling is showing more dire situations for president. Trump is trailing behind Joe Biden, not just in head to head matchups. On these intangibles like personality traits, but also tangible like how they will handle major crises or issues like we were saying earlier whether that's race relations or the corona virus, two major things that are consuming the country including in these battleground states I mean that's kind of the fascinating thing that I've been thinking through Brian, as the coronavirus is really overtaking states like Texas and Florida. Florida in particular and I guess I would really say Florida. Because of how near and dear, that is the president's heart. I'm curious if that will make him change the way that he talks about the virus or the way that he talks about the virus when he's in these states, because of how crucial they are to the electoral map in November to his reelection efforts. And Robert Costa to the point. You started to make about your reporting on Capitol Hill. How is this discussion of of confederate monuments and the like going to get a Susan Collins reelected down ballot in Maine or Cory Gardner in Colorado? Or. Brian what about senator, Lindsey, Graham and South Carolina even Senator Lindsey Graham Golf partner for president. Trump has come out and taken a different position than the President in terms of the president's embrace of the confederate flag is something that should not be attacked or removed by NASCAR races because senator. Graham can see the writing on the wall and South Carolina Jamie Harrison a democrat. Democrat there is bullying a very strong fundraising numbers and that South Carolina a red state senator. Graham sees the numbers in Georgia to Senate races. Senator Cornyn in tough race in Texas and so we always talk about Susan Collins. The senator from Maine Cory Gardner in Colorado, but you're looking at a Senate. Republican conference tonight. That's nervous across the map, not just in those purple areas. And Robert Before I lose you, your newspaper is reporting tonight. That chief justice John. Roberts suffered a fall back in June and was hospitalized at least overnight with a head injury. What what can you add to this? My colleague. Bob Barnes are veteran court reporter reports tonight that Chief Justice who did have some seizures in nineteen ninety-three in two thousand seven, he fell, had a bloodied head at the Chevy. Chase Club in June last month late, June but it was not a seizure according to the Supreme Court spokesperson, he was hospitalized. It's not clear yet why this was not disclosed until now until July, but the the chief justice is fine, but he was hospitalized, and that is the same club. The Chevy Chase Club where justice. Cavanaugh is also a member. To our guests and our viewers alike during this pandemic, we depend on folks to invite us into their homes. We've all received a master's degree in telecommunications at electroncs, thanks everybody for rolling with US tonight, but most especially to our big three for starting us off Robert. Costa Alexi. McCamman doctor redlener greatly appreciated coming up for US following our first break the explosive new. New Book we mentioned from inside the trump extended family. Our next guest explains why this could destroy some of the mythology of the trump family, and later everything's bigger in Texas but during pandemic. That's not good. Texas is home to thirty million Americans and Texas just set three new records just today as the eleventh hour is just getting underway on this Tuesday night. We cherish to go to the move and do the other thing not because they are easy, but because they. I'm Chuck Rosenberg on my podcast. "I think they would love to be able to Giuliani under the bus but they're joined closely. I mean look at your on on the on the call. All of you know president. Trump is talking about Juliani is my guys my voice my personal attorney but by the way that that sound bite from Tom Bastard is really a wow moment because because you know leaving aside the abuse of power just the degree of crazy one is in the president of the United States is head that he is buying one of the the fruity EST conspiracy theories out there that has been be bunked over and over and over again that in itself is incredibly alarming but to to your question do not underestimate the power and the willingness of the conservative media fog machine to try to make this into something completely different. I was on a flight the other day watching different network and I will tell you it was like experiencing Earth two point zero eight complete alternative reality that they will try to spin spend this as something completely different and they think they have their talking points but to Jonathan's point you watch Jim Jordan this morning on another network and I would think that other Republicans would have to ask themselves. Do you want to become Jim Jordan. You want to have to do this. Do you WANNA be clown yourself. In this particular way you wanNA sound like Lindsey. Graham ramp is sounding right now so far it has worked for them. They think the question is as more information comes out. They run the risk of looking ridiculous addictives. Yeah I mean and you had Lindsey Graham Golfing with Donald Trump yesterday you had his fellow. South Carolina Senator Tim Scott out doing the thing and being Jim Jordan and I guess that is the Fox News. Also imprisons elected Republican. Yeah they know that the people who vote for them watch that all they do as they're told. Yeah I mean that is the it's the bulwark because I wrote last week in Vanity Fair. Fox News is sort of the line. It's the one thing that Donald Trump that stands between donald trump up in his political demise and he knows that I think what's important to focus on is the single most powerful person in America right now might be Lachlan. Murdoch who runs runs the parent company of Fox News because if Fox News turned on Donald Trump I mean that is the levy that allows truth and sunlight to wash into the Republican Party and you mentioned Paul Ryan earlier. I wanted to point out that it's very fascinating that he is now on the board of Fox News as parent company and people familiar with the conversations told me that Paul Ryan is whispering and Lachlan Murdoch's ear that they have the power to cut ties with trump and do a post trump. Republican Party now think about that this former speaker of the house thinks he has more power to shape the Republican Party by Controlling Fox News and when he was in Congress but he's still whispering. He isn't a guy with a great of course. He's still go behind this yeah. Yes yeah. He's not the brave candle beer. I'm sorry no offense. No shame no shame fees are at right. I mean we've. We've heard reporting that that it's been said that if the impeachment vote were today there about thirty to thirty five senators that would vote in favor of impeachment if the vote were we'll see and that's ask what right it's a carbon lamey the way Johnson you are. You're watching Washington for us from the Washington Post. Perhaps the only only way that Donald Trump would be convicted in the Senate is if Mitch McConnell used his power to thwart and change the rules to turn the conviction or acquittal vote into into a by just by formation right because they can't do that. They can simply say that. This is just by affirmation. They don't necessarily have to call a voice vote and unless that's somebody actually object then you could actually do it and everybody can be just as quiet as power and you know what I mean. Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell is he is a an evil genius when it comes to when it comes to running the Senate and I could see that happening if all of his judicial candidates those nominees have they all been have they all been confirmed yet start looking at the pieces that would make it possible for a vote of acclamation convicting the president. Thank you bye. I'm sorry yeah by unanimous consensus right. That's a good point because what Mitch McConnell does keep his eye on the prize and the prize is of course serving judges and the court counterpoint to that is he is up for reelection twenty and former trump eight pointed out to me that trump's approval approval numbers in Kentucky are double digits higher than what Mitch McConnell's number so his political future in some sense tied John Trump and so charlie thanks on your the point the point to you because Republicans have put themselves into buying ironically the person warned them about this was Lindsey Graham who said that if we nominate Donald Trump will be finished as deserve deserve it and what's happened is they. All have to go down together. They all have to link arms together. They all wanted the tax cuts together. They all wanted the far right wing judges together. They want what Donald Trump delivers they just don't like his manners and so if they turn on him now even Fox turned on him now. There's one America network out there even further right networks out there. You're the right wing base could turn to doesn't everyone actually have to go down with the titanic in this case yeah. I think that's likely Look Mitch. Mitch McConnell is not going to turn on Donald trump the there's virtually no way that the Senate Senate Republicans are going to vote to remove him from office. I can't been trying to count. I can't get above of three. Republicans even remotely might possibly vote to remove roles just leave the Senate loses and go back to just being a rich guy unbelievable and by the way let's get Mitt some some some credit here that he is actually willing to buck his his colleagues. Susan Collins Steps Javale Leykis baby baby steps here but again. What what else is out there. What are we gonNA to find out you know we it does feel like the dam is breaking when you think about all that has happened because of one whistle blower how many of the whistle blowers are out there how many other other tapes how many other transcripts other is there some other point again. It's extremely unlikely Republicans will ever break for exactly actually the reasons. You just said that. They're sort of in this. They've gone so far. They're all GONNA go down together whatever but but we don't know where we're at on all of this because I think where we are today compared to we were just a week ago. Yeah the point going down together because here's the thing there are twenty Republicans. This is three cycles in the United State Senate for all of our civics friends and two of them. The two worst ones for Democrats have passed. This is now the worst of the three every two year cycles in the Senate for Republicans. They have about twenty people that are up for reelection. You'll places like Colorado. Susan Collins the always troubled. Susan Collins is up disappointed this this one we're going to do what trump says but in a sort of way there's a lot of them. Joni Ernst and you think about people that have to run for reelection how many people are actually in danger of losing reelection if they vote to acquit because if this is a national security situation Asian remember the way that the speaker was able to get to now two hundred and twenty-five supporters of an inquiry is this is now not about the past about future elections and it's not about politics it's about national security and that's why they get so much more powerful than in some ways the muller looking forward looking and so now if you have some John Cornyn born insane by hereby acquit when this is a national security situation that is clear there are transcripts that the White House put out there not even a transfer but that's their own spin and she says he did it. How many people could lose the election for him? I think a lot could lose and I say that because of of the op-ed that ran in the in the Washington Post last week from the seven National Security House Democrats from districts that trump won and that that tells you all you need to know about why Speaker Pelosi felt comfortable to that. She made that it's also a reason why folks folks are Republicans are running for re election in the Senate should be very wary about what could befall them if and when new new new new notes on notes on phone calls come out. Maybe there's another blow the whistle blower testimony what this person ends up saying how many more more people get implicated and one when little nefarious announcement that came out last week that perked my ears up the Russians put out an announcement saying. I hope our conversation get leaked to me that was that was luggage beyond thuggish. They're like careful as we got stuff stuff. Remember Right Donald Trump. Maybe behaving is sort of some people have said and sort of a mafiose style but the dawn you're not donald trump glad the you know what I was. GonNa say is once. That announcement came out. It was the first time I think people realize what this Ukrainian story may be way bigger it. It may have something to do with Russia. Remember they are at all about Ukraine is our ally. I mean people tend to forget that. Congress appropriated those funds because because Congress believed it would be beneficial to the United States of America to protect your grade from Russia so it's really tied in one state came out at that point. If I were Obama quiet but now they decided at that very moment to step up and say oh now wait a minute right no no no to Charlie's tanks when you have been SAS who's been que- he's been completely pliant. He has sort of been almost Paul Ryan like in his hiding behind the curtains to protect himself from trump's tweets sort of gently stepped out this week and try to regain some of his former credibility as constitutionalists and said well. We may not want to get out there too far in favor of Donald Trump that crack does suggest that Republicans understand that this is grave and serious which then indicates to me that it's probably much worse than we think yeah and clean consciences that small voice telling you that maybe things that are gonna get worse now. Met Ben Sasse has been such a disappointment and because of what he could have been he could have been intellectual leader of you know post trump republican republicanism but he's up for re election he doesn't want to challenge these afraid the tweets but it was a little again another little baby step that he was willing to say guys. Let's not prejudge this. Let's not pretend this as not serious that this this is just simply nothing because it is something here and I do think that I do think the Republicans are looking around and going look we about his any Republican said Eh you know Donald Trump would never do this guy. That's how he behaved yeah and that and that once you've established this pattern when you go if this is the way he behaves in phone calls with foreign leaders. How many other conversations like that. What do you say to President Gee leaving aside. NBS and Putin and now that this stuff is coming out again. It's it's the question. Of how far are they willing to go so far. It's it's been one hundred percent but but again things are moving to the by the way this feel so different than investigation because that went on for so long it was so secret in many many ways it put that whole scandal on hold very long time now it's all playing out in real time and the stories that are being broken are not being broken in on a secret investigation these public hearings. I think do have a chance to move the needle of ours the point I think a person to watch in the coming days and weeks is John John Bolton right. I mean he's a person has deep ties to the senior leadership across the Republican Party. He's a notoriously Laura. Foreign Policy Hawk the idea. Donald trump was trading on Ukraine security to help his own political cause would be anathema to a person like John Bolton and he has for this president behind the scenes. I almost certain Martin that he is having conversations to push the Republican Party to break with Donald someone's GonNa Talk. It probably would be him very imagine. All of this started happening. John Bolton walked out. I left you you didn't leave and I believe he was the last babysitter babysit or the Babysit- nuke in writing president. I don't want to dig Zakho U K Park which gave his sermon. Thank you very much charlie. We'll be right back. Why after the break have you really grooming at with the whistle blower and his or her attorneys bad coming before the committee and providing information firsthand yes we have and as director. McGuire promise during the hearing that was a blower will be allowed to come in and come in without a minor from the Justice Department to or from the White House to tell the whistle blower what they can and cannot I'd say we'll get the unfiltered testimony that whistleblower now we are taking all the precautions we can to make sure that we do so we allow that testimony to go forward in a way protects the whistle blowers identity.
