"Have a robust strategy that want to maybe do equity and options. And crypto trading, side by side, they want to earn interest on their cash, Robinhood dissolve that for you. We've talked about pay for order flow on the show. How would you explain that concept and why do you think Robinhood uses it? You know, it might not be the best person actually to speak on that. Since that is more time with our equities and options business and I get to really oversee how we're doing things on crypto. Okay. And so how are you doing things on crypto differently by not using commissions or kickbacks? Yeah, so we route our orders to a few liquidity providers. We route based on the best price. So we have them competing on price to give our customers the lowest score highest if you're selling possible price in the market. And we do receive rebates from them for our order flow. Listen, I'm drinking out of a mug that says index funds and chill. So I fully love dollar cost averaging. I love the idea of being a long-term investor. I'm a little bit more concerned about people that are jumping in for the first time and just starting to trade, but I do so appreciate the idea of democratizing finances. It's what I stand for. It's why I get up every morning. Do you think though trading should be available to everyone even if they're not experienced in the market or do you think it's dangerous for folks who don't know how to use it? You know, I don't know if it's my place to really opine and say, yes, people should or shouldn't be doing certain things. I think there's enough of that that actually makes it really intimidating to get involved in the first place, right? So I don't want there to be another barrier to entry if you are thinking about something. Like my best advice is just start small. So with that said, I do think that education is part of the onboarding process. I think that as you get, if you're a first time investor or trader, really understanding and taking the time to listen to other people read up on the decisions that you're making, I think is critical. No matter what. And so I think Robinhood is also pretty great for new investors and new traders there as well. A lot of young people are on the platform. Do you actually know how many? Actually, I don't have that. I don't have to figure out the time in my head, but I do know that our median age tends to do more towards the millennial investor. Yeah, and we've had some millennial investors actually on the show who have done a lot of day trading on Robinhood on other platforms. Some of them were actually in their teens, which makes me fell particularly old. But what kind of safeguards are in place to protect them from hurting themselves financially? Yeah. So, I mean, every broker dealer has KYC requirement, which is know your customer. So when you onboard into Robin Hood, there's a series of questions that you get asked that will kind of help us understand who you are as an investor and where you are in your investment journey. And that kind of permeates through the entire app. I think that the educational resources that we've seen that are really successful. One that I personally love is our snacks podcast, which kind of makes investing really bite size. It's a snack. So you can kind of listen and understand what is happening in the market. You can learn more about companies. Crypto specifically, I think that we've actually made a lot of investments here. And again, our recurring product is something that I'm really excited about, because you can invest as little as $1 on a recurring basis. So if you're like, look, not really sure about this. I want to get started small. You know, you can put $1 into one of our cryptocurrencies every week and just and see how that feels and see whether it works out for you. And if not, you can adjust and you can change and there's so many different options on the app that you can go from there. Hold on to your wallets, boys and girls, money rehab will be right back. Now, for some more money rehab. I think a lot of people do relate Robinhood with GameStop. We've covered it a lot. What was it like seeing that play out from the inside? Yeah. I mean, honestly, you know, and I've been at Robinhood for four and a half years now. It felt a lot like handled other really critical and important moments in the company's history. I really admire our leadership and how open and transparent they are with the company. I really admire seeing them put our customers first and all of the decisions that they're making and how they show up in those critical moments. And so seeing that from the inside and seeing how people were thinking about, how do we show up? And how do we do the right thing? It made me more bullish on Robinhood in general. So the company just IPO congratulations. Thank you. What was the IPO process like for you? Really what was magical about the IPO process for us is that we had recently launched an IPO product on our platform. So typically IPOs are really catered to institutional players. It's not the retail investor. It's not you and I get to raise our hand and say, I want to participate in an IPO and get shares before it's even awkward at market. And Robinhood, a few months before our own IPO launched this new product, which kind of turned that on its head and said, why should the rich get a better deal? Let's make sure that retail and everyday customers have access to this as well. And our own IPO went through that process. So it was really the day out of and I was really lucky to be able to be at NASDAQ with the founders and kind of the senior staff team. I don't think a lot of people were thinking about their own bank account. So thinking about our customers, the ones that have participated in our IPO and what it meant for them and how we were able to kind of get more people involved and get them an insider go into this.

"Based in part on your work history and your income. So it does range. But that's something that will you won't be at your job, but you'll be getting money from the government to pay. In some cases, if someone is denied social security, they can appeal. There isn't appeals process. And I would highly encourage anyone that is denied to appeal. It is really important. But then if someone, let's say it has way more limited resources, there's something called SSI, supplemental security income. It is for someone who's disabled and has limited income and resources. That is another route if somebody doesn't have that work history or is, for example, doesn't has minimal resources that will also be an option that someone can pursue social security income. And so if someone is concerned about long-term, not being able to work, I would highly suggest looking into those. And also, I should mention some states have their own short term disability programs. So that is also something to look at. I talk about the federal baseline but states can always go beyond that. So it's worth just taking a quick look. And what I always believe, especially when someone has a serious illness, if there is one person that you trust, whether it's a family member, a friend that wants to help and says, how can I help? This is one of those things, whether it's, you know, bringing you a meal coming with you to an appointment. This is one of those things that someone can help you look up and start to think through a plan of approaching. Because it can be overwhelming, but at least if you know something is out there, then you can drink a little bit deeper if you're ever faced with a situation. Now, for some more money rehab, of course, I am a big fan of negotiating everything, including medical debt. Are there any tips or tricks that you've seen work if people are first of all thinking, I can't believe it's negotiable. And second of all, what do I do? I think a big part whether you're talking to your insurance company and trying to get something covered or if you're talking to somebody at the hospital, build that positive rapport. These are oftentimes people that you'll have to interact with again. If somebody isn't helpful, you may want to write down their name to hopefully you won't get a chance to talk to them again. Try to call back, try to speak with someone else. And if they are helpful, write down their name, give them a compliment, figure out when are their work hours roughly. And if you can't get a direct extension, maybe find out, what's the easiest way to get a hold of them? And positive report can go a long way because sometimes it's that extra mile. I can't tell you how many times I've heard stories from people that someone who's part of the insurance company will just give them a little tip. You know, they usually deny this on the first try. But if you appeal, there's a good chance they'll approve it. Or did you ever think about calling your doctor's office and seeing if your medication from the pharmaceutical company has a patient assistance program that will just throw out some little helpful tips just like you're talking to a friend for all human beings after all? And sometimes if you just tell them, you know, I'm going through a lot right now. If there's anything else, you know, have those gears running. Try to help me out if there's any other program. They might just, they might just remember something that they had forgotten. And they know you really appreciate it. So having that report also saves you the time of explaining your situation again. I talked to you yesterday about such and such and you don't have to go through the whole timeline. Write things down too. I mean, I know that someone dealing with even not a serious illness, you know, we forget. And it's important to say, well, you know, we talked about this yesterday at around this time. And you know, here's what we covered. And having that can kind of help someone refresh their memory. And if they've told you something's covered, maybe you could work beyond that and get that covered. So I think that's a huge aspect of just remembering who you're talking to and getting someone that's helpful. In your experience, it seems like you've seen a lot of debt collectors show some sympathy for cancer patients. Yes, and certainly, you know, once it goes to collections, there are rules in place where collector can't call and harass someone in the middle of the night. There are laws out there. Certainly, if someone is saying that you owe something from collections or identifying themselves as such, ask to see it in writing. I think that's huge because a lot of times when someone's accumulating medical debt and feeling overwhelmed, it just feels like the world is turning against you and everything that can go wrong will. So if someone calls and says, you gotta pay this or the hospital won't talk to you again. You might just think it's true whereas it's wrong. And so I would say ask to see it in writing say, you know, okay, I'd like to just make sure to review everything. Make sure that they send it to you so you can see if it's legitimate or not. Don't give out information just because someone's asking for it. Try to find a little bit more and see if it's someone who's taking advantage or if someone really is just a scammer. And isn't even collection. So I think that there's a lot out there that people especially vulnerable people that may owe some money and think that they're dealing with so much. They just want to pay off collections. Make sure that it's legitimate. And, you know, if they're calling out weird hours or making very serious threats, there are laws to protect consumers out there. And so these are all types of things that hopefully someone just knows that are out there. And if they feel like something's wrong, they can look a little bit deeper and find out those solutions. The clients that you meet with are in such Dire Straits. You mentioned that many of your clients go through bankruptcy. Is that an option that you recommend to clients who simply can't.

"You and your money. Will it doesn't? Charge for wasting our time. I will take a check. You recognize her from anchoring on CNN, CNBC, and Bloomberg. The only financial expert you don't need a dictionary to understand. The cold lappin. Today we have a listener intervention with the money rehabber who wrote in because she saw that her credit score dipped for seemingly no reason. She was hoping to understand why it dropped and how to pick it back up. We did go over some dips to boost her credit score, but our conversation turned into a bigger conversation about when your credit score matters and when it should take a backseat to other things in your financial life. Here's our conversation. So tell me a little bit about what's going on. So I'm not in any kind of financial struggles and my credit score is pretty good. It's in the higher better area. However, you know, there's a lot of misconceptions about how credit works and how to properly use your credit card and all that stuff. And essentially, I track my credit score through the app and it tells me all the time that I don't have enough credit lines open. But then it tells me that my credit lines that are open are immature and, you know, and it's one of those things like I want to build my credit score and make it work for me, essentially. Yeah. And I'm just curious, is it worth it to open another credit card even though you're going to hit it? Get a hit on your credit score. Stuff like that. So a few questions. What is your credit score? It is in the 7 high 7 60s. Okay. How often are you checking your credit score? Probably once a month. Why are you checking it once a month? Because the app Kona notifies me if there's any changes. And you're concerned about little changes like 5, ten points, 20 points, stuff like that. Well, there was a random like 14 hit 14, you know, point hit recently, and then so it went down 14 points, and I was really confused and I couldn't quite figure out what it was. And then it went back up ten points, and I was really confused by that whole thing. And so that's kind of what piqued my interest into figuring out what the deal is with credit. Yeah, it's definitely a complicated thing. Is there a reason that you need a higher credit score than 7 60? Are you looking into a big purchase in the future? Or is it just like you want to be an a student? Kind of both. Definitely want to be an a student. I mean, I strive to be, you know, like, to keep my adult, you know, things in order and do the best that I can. Obviously, most of us strive for that. But eventually hard. It is, it's so hard. Yeah, it's so hard. But eventually we went to build our dream home and my husband retired from military, so it would be nice to make sure that, you know, all of our ducks are in a row before that time comes. I mean, we have a while, but that's very responsible of you. I am so proud of you. I too was the kind of student that did my term paper the day it was assigned not the night before. I am a card carrying nerd for sure. And I fully get this. And when I started getting into credit, I would compulsively check my credit all the time. The thing about that is, you don't necessarily need to do that, especially if you are far out from a big purchase. So when is your husband going to retire? He will be retiring in about ten years, but that doesn't necessarily that doesn't necessarily mean that we won't be buying a house within that time period. It's just, you know, by the time he retires, we want to actually build our dream home, kind of settle down. So I love this plan. This is a fantastic idea. I would like to come to the house or may please and thank you. Building a house I've been through this before is always over time and over budget. So it's really smart of you to get a jump start on it and to have all of your credit ducks in a row. Well, before I give you some credit hacks, and I definitely have some for you. I just wanna let you know. This is not a criticism at all. I know this is coming from a good place. You don't need to check your score as much right now. And you don't have to freak out about a ten point increase or decrease randomly. If you were telling me that you're going to buy a home in 6 months, this would be a different conversation. And there are some ways in the short term, right before you're about to make a big purchase that you can do to boost your credit score, we don't even need to get into that because we're not in that time right now. Like right before you're about to make a big purchase, you don't want to make other big purchases. There are different things that you can do with your credit to boost it. You can get a boosting thing from experience or whatever. But that's not your scenario. Correct? Correct. Okay, so I just want to caveat all of this by saying you're doing great. Thanks. And I think that this is the better extreme to go to than the other side of not caring and not ever checking, right? But I think that there's a balance here from what I'm hearing from you. Right. Don't be so hard on yourself. Hold on to your wallets, boys and girls, money rehab will be right back. We're all better off with an ally. Hey guys, are you ready for some money rehab? Wall Street has been completely upended by an unlikely player. GameStop. And should I have a 401k because then you have to do it? No, I know. It feels like a whole world revolves around you and your money. Well, it doesn't. Charge for wasting our time. I will take a check. You recognize her from anchoring on CNN, CNBC, and Bloomberg. The only financial expert you don't need a dictionary to understand. The cold lappin. What's in a name? Well, a lot. Just like you stress over the name of your kid or your puppy, you should be equally thoughtful about the name of your business. Today's money rehabber is looking for a little advice on that subject. Here he is. In a call, my name is sky, and I'm starting a digital marketing consulting firm. I've done a lot of the paperwork, but what I'm finding to be the hardest part about starting my own business is deciding on the name. I'm just totally drawing a blank and haven't come up with a single option where can I go to find out a good business name? Oh, sky, sky sky. I wish there was a shortcut to finding the perfect business name. There are some brand name generators on the interwebs that are fun to play around with. But the short story is, you are going to have to do this one on your own. And you'll be so glad you did because your company name is a big freaking deal. You'll do a lot of hard things when it comes to running your own business, and I'm not going to say that coming up with the name is the hardest thing you'll do, but it is the first hard thing you'll do. But I'm here to help. Here are 6 things to help spark inspiration when picking a name. Number one. Go dictionary diving. When the founders of Twitter were naming their company, they literally opened up the dictionary and found the injury for Twitter. The rest is history. The same thing with Google, though. Most people think that Google is made up word. In fact, the founders used a creative spelling of the word Google GOOGOL, which means a number that is equal to one followed by 100 zeros. The idea was to connote in just one word the massive breadth and scope they wanted their search engine to have. So, just off your dictionary or pop over to dictionary dot com and start treasure hunting. Number two. Invent a language. If you can't find a name that you like in the dictionary, consider just making up a word. Like Xerox, or Kodak. The thing to keep in mind here is that since these are not actual words, there's no sentiment attached except the one you create through advertising and marketing that customers relate to. If you don't want to or don't have the money to do that right now, steer towards something that's already out there. Go have seized with make believe. If you can't think of a made up name and you don't want to go with a boring one, well then smush two together. Like Instagram or Facebook. And don't forget about the startups out there ending in LY or a 5 or Abel, like Bitly, Spotify, Shopify, and giftable. Number four. Is it sticky? In business speak, stickiness refers to how memorable the name is with customers. The best names are those that you don't have to write down to remember even after you hear them for the first time. Number 5. Is it visual? The founder of the equipment company caterpillar came up with the name after hearing someone describe his tractors as crawling like a caterpillar. He loved that visual and so was born the name of one of America's most iconic companies. Number 6. Shorties, but goodies. Studies have shown that briefer is better when it comes to company names. Nike, Apple, Pixar. And eBay are all just too syllables. Long names are harder to remember and harder for people to tell their friends about, which is the best and cheapest, marketing you can get. After you've narrowed down your favorite names to about 5 that you've tested and love, then do a trademark search through the U.S. patent and trademark office. Chances are you aren't the only one to come up with the name, but you might be the only one in your vertical to have it, which makes all the difference in the world. You don't have to trademark your name, but you might run into issues if someone else says they registered for the trademark and you're using it, leading to a mountain of legal fees and other hell. So guys, storytime. I started my media company in 2011 at the end of the so called Great Recession. I had just left hardcore business news where my primary audience was old rich white dudes. And by the way, I'm not stereotyping here. That's exactly what the Nielsen ratings showed. I wanted to reach a younger audience of mostly women who didn't seek out money news. But I knew needed to most. I thought, we're such an Easter. Was the perfect name for one of the digital properties in my media company. I paid a few grand for the domain of recessions to dot com, hired a trademark law firm to secure the mark for the site, started creating original video content and built out tools, like an easy peasy, expense tracker. It felt like the whole thing was just that. Easy peasy. Until it wasn't. I heard from a woman. In fact, everyone, I knew heard from this woman. Let's call her..

"Money charge for wasting our time. I will take a shot. You recognize her. Anchoring on cnn cnbc and bloomberg the only financial expert. You don't need a dictionary to understand the cold lap in a couple of weeks ago. I had money rehab or katryn on the show for a listener intervention. you remember. She was worried that she had over contributed to her roth. Ira because of an unexpected bump in her earnings this year one topic hatred and i covered that we didn't have time to put in the final episode. Was a conversation about a pro move to open a roth. Ira even if you don't qualify for one. Here's a behind the scenes clip from that conversation. When they wanted to tell you in the beginning was how you can indirectly invest in a roth. Ira do you know about this. Is this the back door roth. Ira okay here's my knowledge. Goes i know it exists. But i don't know how to bridget and do you know anything else about it. Just that it's champagne problem where people who shouldn't or can't be investing in traditional roth. Ira's can use this to invest in a roth ira so what the fuck is a backdoor roth. Ira it sounds like it would be a retirement account run by the mob. One where you make your contribution in some tony. Soprano like figure makes your taxes disappear while the name. Sounds sketchy a back door roth. Ira is a totally legit legal way to get into the roth ira game. Even if you don't qualify as we've mentioned before the big benefit of a roth ira is that you pay taxes on your contributions when you contribute and then today die. You're denzo with taxes. You don't need to think about the big t word ever again at least with a roth. So if you think you'll be in a larger tax bracket dumb line which if you keep listening to money rehab obviously you will be then roth. Ira's or great option for you. Plus taxes will probably go up across the board in the future so when you get the option to either pay taxes now or stick it to your future self usua- pony up now fun. It's not quite that easy in two thousand twenty one you are eligible for a roth. Ira if you make less than one hundred twenty five thousand dollars a year as a single unmarried no ring on it person if you make more than that first of all ua good for you. You're raking it in. But second of all the bad news or at least as bad as bad news is when you're making six figures you can't set up a roth. Ira or so you may think one way to get around this eligibility role. Is you guessed it through the back door setting up a backdoor roth ira or flake this. You create a traditional ira which has no income limits. You can sign up. No matter how much you make. Then you convert traditional ira into a roth ira which actually isn't as tricky as it sounds. You basically just need to sign some paperwork. Whatever institution you used. Sign up for your traditional. Ira can likely help you with that. However here are some words of caution. This move comes with taxes galore. There is a chance you will be taxed on this money now once not twice but three times. If you do this back door move you'll need to pay. What are called conversion taxes before starting this process you should estimate how much you'd pay in conversion taxes and ask yourself self. Do i have enough money in my bank account to come for late. Cover those taxes. You may be thinking silly nicole. I'll just take the money out of my ira to pay these taxes. No no year silly. That is a bad idea if you're younger than fifty nine and a half you'll face a penalty for taking the money out of your ira early. Plus the money you take out could be taxed yet again. Taxation around number two the amount you choose to convert from your traditional ira will be counted and taxed as income therefore if you're teetering on the upper limit of your tax bracket as is having your converted ira money count towards your income may push you into yet a higher tax bracket if you decide to opt for a back door roth ira choosing amount to roll over. That will not push you into a higher tax bracket. This is a totally fair. Move you don't need to roll over everything in your traditional ira into a new roth ira account after all. Why have one ira when you could have to taxation round number three if you've earned money on investments within the traditional ira. You'll need to pay cap gains taxes on the interest earned. Yep that is a triple whammy. Here's today's tip. You can take straight to the bank one last disclaimer on back door roth. Ira's once you've rolled over your traditional ira into a roth. Ira really can't touch the money for the next five years. If you take money out earlier than that you have to deal with. You guessed it more taxes. Loss fatty ten percent penalty in general. If you aren't eligible for a front door roth. Ira and you can pay the taxes and make the five-year freeze work. Then i recommend you take a closer look and even go for the back door roth. Ira but if you're thinking you'll need to pull money out of your ira within the next five years. You should definitely keep the back door. Closed this money. So the practice squad ward, they will find it for teams, four price club been leaks to thirteen now that you say that just the fact that you know, that makes me think that they must have already done that we are reported on it as why was, you know, not. Fact check remember we we didn't know who was the backup tackles rain. Okay. After western was gone. What would be Cooper Nevada factor?

"Karen. Thank you so much pulse. Weenie and Tom Keene in. This is really a joy, we have the document in front of us. If you are enough of an ancient on Wall Street, you understand the respect for standard and Poor's and C R A of SNP global when they look at standard and Poor's five hundred prophets people. Stop and read we can do that with Lindsey bell joy. She's an investment strategist who actually can break down. What companies are doing? What's your signal? Talking point Lindsey bell about SNP prophet there color right now. Why single topping talking point right now would be that earnings numbers for twenty nine thousand nine have come down very very sharply. And I believe it may be overdone right now for twenty nineteen. We're looking for two point six percent earnings growth that's down from six and a half percent on January one historically what you've seen from the start of the year to the end of the year numbers are cut by about five and a half percentage points. We've already got four percentage point cut in two months. So Lindsay interesting. We've had we have the market up eleven percent. A year today earnings is over. The fed seems to be on the sidelines at least for the near term where is the market going to look for for the next catalyst move this market Ford. Yeah. I think we're kind of entering a little bit of a quiet period. Especially after this week. A lot of news came out this week. We finished up earnings with retailers. And then we also heard from the side we'd heard on from China trade. We've we've heard from North Korea on the foreign policy and things like that. I think we're going to go into a little bit of a quiet period where they'll be some industry conferences that you'll get a little bit of news here and there about different parts of the s&p five hundred. But I think going forward what corporations need to know and investors need to know, exactly. What is happening with China? We need that uncertainty removed. We actually feel good about where the market is right now it's valued at one point eight times, which is about online with the historical average of sixteen point four support. Lizzy to me in the observation is Paul Sweeney shell not only from Hanoi in India and all the rest of it. But just the corporate restructuring, what do you make of so many? Companies it appears like EBay and gap finally making decisions that maybe should have made X quarters are X years ago. I mean, what do you make of the moment? We're in right now. I think these are companies that are are starting to realize that they need to find areas of growth, and they've gotten really big in the case of the gap they've expanded. And they they bought up all these different brands. And now they need to maybe break them apart to help each individual brand survive and thrive really on its own in and find growth in different ways. We view this as a positive especially stock prices have gotten so high in the market right now, it makes it really hard for individual investors to get into some of these names like especially the fangs look at look at Amazon and Google, for example, their stock prices have have increased so significantly above a thousand dollars. It makes it really hard for your average investigating Bob. That's why you know, proliferating of ETF has been so so important. It's it's been the way really need. Investors can invest in those names so Lindsey one of the things that's really. As Tom and I about this market has been the volatility that Thomas. Likes to point out this thirty six percent round trip. We've seen since the December and coming back here through March first given that volatility where do you feel comfortable telling your clients to put some money say five stars? We know that's the answer. But it's okay. After what we've witnessed over the last one hundred days throw the stars out the window Lindsey. What would you do right now? Well, so what we we like the cyclical sectors because going into we're in the cyclically strong period of the year. When you think about it from seasonal perspective, we'll be in combat and to the end of April. And so we've been bullish on energy information technology, still we saw yesterday in the Catholic number the software area. That's one area Monique really been interested in over the last six months or so, and we think it will continue to do. Well. And then we like a little bit of defensiveness with the utility. Because we do think that volatility will remain in the market's near-term and we like a little bit of mixture. Both you know. Okay. Lindsey. Thank you. So it's Lindsey Bill with a nice update. Again, we protect the copyright of all of our guests. We're not gonna send you out the acclaimed sector intellect of our a Paul. We have a massive correction for our global audience and particularly for Bloomberg eleven three. Oh, I am. So folks, I. I've been the islanders timeout chair. Right now Jonathan saves me. I just assumed they were at Barclays for islanders leaves and his Jonathan correctly states. They were at the mausoleum. This is the coolest rink in the world to watch a hockey game. It's a Nassau Coliseum. Yep. Which is a total complete dump except the sight lines are to die for the Montreal forum. Went away Maple Leafs garden went away the Saint of Boston Garden part part of the Sistine Chapel that went away they refurbish the mausoleum, but it's still the Coliseum, and I went once somebody said, you gotta go see the Anaheim ducks play. And I went in. It was like being at the Montreal forum. This. It was on Long Island and the fans the islander fans loved that. They never really got comfortable with Brooklyn, then so I would pay three hundred bucks that I pay like a twelve hundred bucks for a decent seat there anytime over Madison Square Garden. It is.
