"Sentence here always is tough. Because i don't i really don't believe in cages. I don't believe in jails for anybody. I spend a lot of my time fighting immigration detention at the same time. I believe there should be accountability for this absolutely horrific attack that this man was a part of but i worry that there really isn't any justice here because the actions that he took our about how he believes in how he feels. And you know that. I don't know that can be addressed in eight months or even eight years in jail or wherever. That'd be something that he wants to change. And so that's the thing that i really hope this time will give him and i hope that it is a little bit of a deterrent for other people who are involved in this. They understand that there are consequences to their actions. Not only themselves individually before our country. And i ended with you. Tiffany my lawyer. Does this eight month sentence make sense to you based on what you know about the legal system and do you think we're likely to see. Even more people sentenced for participating in the insurrection. I think this eight month sentences fair. I believe in decarbonisation. I'm not an abolitionist. I believe in punitive consequences for crimes. And so i think that this individual deserves to spend eight months incarcerated in a federal prison for his crimes against this country. It makes sense. It's not the maximum sentence that he could have received for his crime. But i think without a criminal record and without any physical violence that the state had eight months is is pretty significant. And i think it's a good start to west going to happen with other individuals who are charged in the insurrection. So i'm satisfied. And i'm just you know waiting eagerly to see what will happen with the rest of the cases so much see this week. We're going to have to leave it there for now but it was nice talking with you. Just and tiffany. thanks. Aaron thanks so much erin. That was tiffany. Jeffers legal analyst at our body politic. "John because the advertisers didn't said anything they had to set something that was like that we could all get behind and the truth is podcast hosting the part that we spend so much time on his glorified file hosting like they know that the request made how much was said and so differentiating between sixty seconds and fifty percent of the episode sent. I don't know if it makes that much difference. I listen to reds great. The listen to ray part is really interesting though because you have to compile it from so many places right you can only get it from apple spotify. Google amazon doesn't have a portal for it yet. At the time of recording this and things like overcast or cast box. Don't have it. I don't think so. That's up metrics. That aren't third party validated. Which means they're part of a walled garden but they're all walled gardens that we've accepted. An advertisers will accept. You're not only using this as justification for advertising. You're saying. Hey here's the download metrics. I hate them. You want to see them but let me show you. Why are downloads are better. And that's why you're using the listen to rate you're saying let's not focus on. Oh we got more downloads this month. Let's focus on the fact. We increased our listened to rape by three percent. What does that mean. Does that mean more space to add another add. Does that mean we can extend content or over different. Think does that mean a piece of content in that specific episode resonated and we should dig into it further so much knowledge that can be gained from that but not only on the production side but on the advertising side and on the editorial side right. This is the thing that i've broken many hearts on clubhouse podcasting seriously club Because you get a lot of really enthusiastic energetic. First time you know podcasters and i say to them. Okay tell me what you. Listen to the raiders. My what my hope all. You don't know what you're listening to this. We can talk about how to make your show matter so come weak. Set up your dashboard. Come back next week and the dotted. It's so tough though. It just bums me out. That like spotify. Amazon and google have an opportunity here like spotify. An apple have basically said like their goal. Is the silo. They really just want you to focus on them. They're showing that they're trying to incentivize and good on them. I get it. it's competitive. It's competitive for all of us to want people to listen to our podcast. I but like the open nature podcasting attractive. There's no other channels like this. If they bought into the rss feed if they bought into improving it and making standards around they could be passing some of the st back to a host and they could do it in ways that conform a little bit while also taking like taking unique advantage of that open nature and just building it better if these people who start the podcast like you say at have never logged into their apple portal or spotify puerto because they're on anchor which automatically distributes it for them and you don't need a log in or whatnot. Were making a real tough for those people. Accept that now. So i might add up writing about this later but the other one that now we're focusing on a lot is unique listeners. Yeah and so now. I'm encouraging people to really pay attention to the unique listeners. And again because that is something. We can influence right. So in this world were our digital overlords control. Everything there are still things that you can influence. So you've got to pay attention to those things so you're listening to a hundred percent. You can influence unique listeners. A hundred percent. You can influence right because this is about touch points right about finding ways to get your show in front of people and secondly to get those people to recommend your show to people who wanna know what they're listening do so we've been paying a lot of attention to the growth of our unique listeners. Now that simple cosmologists our platform provides that information and for some of our shows for example like our body politic which is a show about politics gear to black women than women of color the only thing that paying attention to is unique listeners in predominantly black cities right mark where i wanna be. I'm so because i can get a breakdown. I can drill down to the sipko level on simple. 'cause i'm able to literally track as a weird tracking for that show five different because around the country to see. What is the penetration and pal are nick listeners. Growing in those sip goes warren. Care about the mouse. Or that. Representativity i care about the most and so that's the other thing. That people are so fixated on the download. That day are missing completely missing on opportunity to in real time week to week month to month track other shows are doing with the. I'm more valuable information and now for a quick to add break. I'd like to tell you about a podcast. Called the setup disruptors of the music industry every week on the setup. "Is that just like with creating youtube content or a website or being famous on social media on twitch streaming. Not everybody is going to make it you know. We don't complain about the new york times versus a blog. We yeah well. I mean look maybe you get better concert over there but you know we. We don't compare them house that we don't we don't worry about how many blogs there are in an how many websites are making money off of things like that we don't we don't compare. How news stations are making money versus youtube celebrities in. I think the problem is comparing all podcasting. Which is this open format with a lot of ways to go about it selling individual content putting it behind a membership based paywall allowing it completely free and doing ad-supported doing it completely free in hopes of it becoming something else and we're comparing this format and then people are talking about youtube. People are talking about other closed. formats that are exclusive. When you make a video yet you can put it everywhere but youtube is going to be where you get the distribution. There's no. I can't put a video up and make it accessible for everybody. I can't i can put my Even a website content write a newsletter. Or whatever. I can't put it up get acceptable to everyone. They have to go seek it out. There's no catcher aggregate for these things. Podcasting is different in that. There's so many is out there and it's so easily available if a friend said to me like i wanna get into podcasting and i wanna make it my career. And they weren't ready to invest in it. I would kind of roll my eyes but it would be. Yeah that's what i would say. Is that you know every year. We get more and more podcasts. We've you know we've had a million podcast now. Where that and the more podcast you get in the soup. The more important the curation of the distribution ends becomes a mean specify hassle. I don't know what a twenty thirty percents mauka share plays. Optimistically and apple has been sixty seventy percent those guys. How an incredible amount of power to filter the soup. That is podcasting. And you know that's fine. When apple has had no skin in the content game the more they get skin in the content game the mole that they have other priorities in terms of filtering. So for me. It's almost a curation issue in that they the the distributors all becoming ever more content creators. And you know that creates a sort of inherent to their business model. Is they have to privilege their own content in the distribution and not just changes the whole ethos of podcasting from something that was you know this open and anyone could do us and you know you never knew what was going to go far what was going to work To something which is is much more end to end. Yeah that's real that's bias on that end right and now for a quick to add break. I'd like to tell you about a podcast. "Goals are and what you're trying to accomplish and you related spotify to to youtube a little bit in that mindset needs aggregate. We talked a lot about aggregates when we first met like netflix. Doesn't have the best content out there. But i am now program to go to one place where they're gonna tell me what to watch because there's so much choice And like when people go on youtube and they develop their habits and their styles and everything. That's the same thing that's happening there and it's it's all very that's what spotify has as as captured for audio right now right like i. I am spotify music listener. I don't listen to nearly as much music i used to. Its use mostly for my kid. But like when i default to opening an audio at spotify. Is it nine times out of ten. When i wanna listen podcasts. I personally like apple podcasts. Still but i don't use either of them for discover ability but like the people tune into a default. It doesn't have to be the best has to resonate with them. Because i pay for hulu. I pay for netflix. Hbo max disney plus amazon prime video. That's free as well. But every time i sit down on the couch. I default to netflix muscle memory. And we got there. And so. I wanna i wanna dig into a little bit more. About how publisher should really think about spotify similar to youtube as an aggregate her instead of this like like freelance. Netflix's mindset right. Like that like they're gonna pay you. They're going to require you. So what were your thoughts on that. Can you dig into that a little bit more. Yeah definitely and i think the idea and the concept of an aggregate or you know really was put forth by ben thompson. Extra tucker in this idea of aggregation theory the internet kind of changing marginal distribution and and kind of resetting different business models. I think the important part of the aggregate her is that there are two sides their supply and demand and what the internet broad and why these aggregates are so powerful is that they've effectively inverted. Who's in control in that scenario and previously it was supply. And so you know people who were publishing news or controlling the newspapers. They had control of surpri as so people came to them. Now that's been inverted. Where companies like spotify and google and facebook and youtube are harnessing the demand and they're aggregating all the people together and they're forcing suppliers to come onto their platform and frankly acquiesce to what the aggregate or wants. I mean you know how many websites out there do everything possible to make sure that google can index their site. Yeah oh yeah you have to bend over backwards you that. I mean youtube influencers. At the time of this game cyberpunk seventy seven just came out and there are people that were giving great reviews up until the day it came out. And then you watch these influencers based on the tide that changed against the the game and the feedback what they put out a review within another day or two after their last one complete one eighty and they're getting even more views because they instead of focusing on their content integrity that riding that wave because they need those impressions and they're banking on either the people who saw both them not caring or new people just coming into the latest one at nats. These are people that are creating content not uniquely for themselves not how they want to not artistically They're creating content because they have to buy into a system in a groundwork laid by u2. Spotify is trying to do that with podcasting to one hundred percent especially if you are trying to make money off of those impressions. I think if that is your your kind of end game than you're gonna get caught on the treadmill just like you know a lot of other creators. i think what people especially you know. Influencers in other content creators are definitely starting to realize. Is that all of those. All of those areas are rented land and they are kind of creating little audiences on land that they don't own and trying to move people onto channels and distribution mechanism that they own and control primarily email in podcasting Is what a lot of people have started to move to. I think the big the big inflection point for podcasting is if the big aggregate apple podcasts. Google spotify those are kind of like the big three in terms of large aggregate irs as soon as they stop allowing. Rss feeds. that amine. Spotify already does. But if google and apple ever stop and disallow you putting your own. Rss feed that's going to be the massive shift in the industry. That is really gonna rock things because it's going to really force you to go through that that door that they create whereas right now there's kind of like a side entrance but they're really moving towards that spotify started there from the beginning they disallow are assess feed so everything you do has to go through them and you know frankly. I think that's where google individually apple are headed. Yeah i mean. I can see the parallels apple and google Like i guess. Apple specifically is into the concept of side loading on their devices right. Everything's going to be signed in their ecosystem and podcasting in kinda doesn't fit with that in its native app and it's kind of an exposed way of going about it i. I'm personally not a fan of closing that that avenue. And i'm not sure that apple is gonna take that move anytime soon but i can see that future where they consider it but i guess when i look at the the battle so to speak between spotify and the other partners by closing that off you're just vowing to what spotify his started so i wonder if we're not gonna see apple and google amazon push more towards the free and open than try and replicate spotify because spotify killing the free and the open is really what's going to propel them even further and now for quick to add break discover the titans of tomorrow today on their way by wgc productions interviews up and coming people from a variety of fields while learn more about podcasting. "Each week on the show we bring you a roundtable called cyp in the political t and this week. Part of the tea is that we have a happy birthday to erin. Hanes of the nineteenth Our regular contributor. Who cannot join us today and we loved it. We get to celebrate her just a tiny little bit at the top of the round table and so sitting in for erin. Hanes is our very own executive producer. Julie lindsay williams. And also. we've got our body. Politic contributor jess morales ricco civic engagement director at the national domestic workers alliance welcome back just hey. I wish you could just see the goofy little dance dipper aaron. Happy birthday aaron -absolutely andrew lak-. It is so great to have you on. This is awesome. Thank you for having me so obviously happy birthday. Erin we love you. We miss you. But i want get a started with something much. More somber the horrific massacre in atlanta georgia. Here's vice-president harris speaking about it. I do want to say to our asian american community that we stand with you and understand how this has frightened and shocked and outraged all people but knowing the increasing level of hate crime against our asian american on brothers and sisters. We also want to speak out in solidarity with them and acknowledged that none of us should ever be silent in the face of any form of hate for i. We've been looking at hate crimes against asian-americans for the show. You have been keeping an eye on aid and then this happened. What was your reaction. I'm just heartbroken. I mean i think that All of us on this roundtable are members of communities that are sometimes demonized and victims of hate crimes. And it is. It is anyone's pain is my pain and i'm sure that you feel the same way and also as a reporter. I've covered racial extremism for twenty five years. It's even more complicated in that. You know because some of this violence is really unprecedented. That generations are morning together. A lot of these attacks are hitting elders and so Just to to go to the stats. There was a report released by the center for the study of hate and extremism at california state university san bernardino that found that last year when overall hate crimes dropped seven percent. They rose one hundred and fifty percent for asian americans. And you have to remember that most hate crimes never get reported as such so. This is an epidemic. It's an epidemic within an epidemic because of Many factors including the weaponization of hatred and politics and also the weaponization of You know a false narrative around asian-americans being you know the problem with covid so it's it's it's tragic not unpredictable. Unfortunately but tragic absolutely My reaction the night as news was breaking was just thinking about my team and thinking. Oh my god it's going to be a hard newsday tomorrow for us Because many of us have lived through the tragic events and having to report having to sort of put on an analytical phase when you're really angry and when you're feeling anxious and when you're literally afraid for people in your lives and so it's been tough jess you're someone who has seen this kind of violence. Before in your work advocating for immigrants. How did you feel about the events. Yeah i mean. I really echo many of the same feelings. You all Both alluded to in the other. Piece i would just add is work released specifically on gender based violence and the ways in which Sexism and patriarchy come up in our world all the time and my boss. Jim poo chinese american woman was really talking about how she recognized. What it was of course. Anti asian american sentiment but also specifically anti asian women's intimate and really targeted at workers. Who are often sexualize. Certainly marginalize sometimes even trafficked in their work at neil's aligns massage parlours And i think that that part is really really important because it is about race absolutely but it's also about gender and as you alluded to delete the work. I do with immigrants. We see this over and over again. A real targeting of women in particular in the context of hate crimes In the trump era and of course in beyond we talk on this podcast about how trumpism is still alive and well. Trump is not the president and i can't think of a more like devastating example thinness now agreed and you connecting this to the lingering effects of trumpism is right on. I mean the pot boiled over on january sixteen insurrection. And we're going to continue to see these effects you know It's like an earthquake and we continue to feel the aftershocks months and years later but despite all of this mounting evidence there's still some partisan feet-dragging and congress farai. You've also been keeping tabs on this. Yeah i mean there's a number of different things happening at once. Of course there general russell honore who was tasked with evaluating the security of the capital came out with some recommendations but the question is what will congress actually do You know not just about the security but about the overall questions about undermining american democracy and Speaker nancy pelosi Of the house. Of course you know. Leader of the democratic party in the house was really trying to put together a nine eleven style. Bipartisan commission but bipartisan. Is you know not sell into well on the hill these days and so it seems as if that whole plan to have a bipartisan commission may end and there will be You know since the house and senate are controlled by the democratic party though very thinly in the senate Since it's technically a split the democrats will control these commissions likely to emerge and it's very likely that republicans will say. Oh you got the narrative wrong and we're already seeing a lot of sort of Not just retrenchment but defiance you know lawmakers saying oh i would have been much more scared if these were black lives matter protesters but i feel comfortable with the people who entered. Let's see they defecated on the floor of the capitol which people of color then cleaned up and they stole things including assets. That can be national security threats. And you're okay with that. I mean honestly. The level of discourse right now is should be scary. So what is the average voter to do. What is the response that could potentially get our lawmakers attention jess he you know. I got to be honest. Usually i'm i'm like there's always something to be done and i'm not totally sure that there is here. I think if you live in a district where there is a republican who is against the spill than you are so powerful right now and it's very very worthwhile. Call your congressperson to tweet at them to a comment on their facebook. Page if you live in a district where folks are supportive. I think that there isn't a ton to be done..

"Start with a big story. Is you know it's impossible to ignore big numbers. And i'll just give you the headlines of three stories. But they're all the same story. Basically i just i like the three headlines because they all tell a little bit different side of it. The first year was immortals club raises additional twenty six million dollars. The second year was from bloomberg says meg. Whitman backed firm to way sale of overwatch team again talking about immortals gaming club and then the third immortals gaming club raises twenty. Six million led by ex quickly. Exact meg whitman. So if you put all these three together you sort of have all the information. You need witches with immortals calling her ex quickly exact. I mean could she is that that has got to be the most subtle you tag career up until on his business like her. Oh the ebay right yeah. That's better than leading quickly. Wow you're only as good as your last gig. You're only as good as your last exum be. Feels like something. Like as a as a term. Like i would order an like an exotic restaurant like well. I will start with the vegetable three way. Medley have the x. Qube for my main interest rate and goes just leaving puzzled. Sometimes i am puzzled. William by how your brain works that brain that it's such a funny term. So so here's here's what we know from the just the three headlines. Immortals gaming is raising a raised twenty six million dollars. It's being led by meg whitman. Who used to be equipped he also ebay footmen footnote and they're looking to sell their overwatch team. Believe it or not so. They've already got rid of their like previously. Got rid of their <hes>. Call of duty league team <hes>. And now the overwatch league team. They're looking to to get rid of it and i'll just read. I'm going to present you all the information guys. And then you can discuss. But it says immortals gaming intends to focus less on city specific teams and more on businesses related to online gaming such as gamers club a subscription service in latin america which connects video game players. The company said last week. It's selling a team playing and activists call of duty league to one hundred thieves <hes>. And now so. They've sold off their call of duty league team now. They're saying they want to sell their los angeles valley and overwatch team. In the meantime the raid they raised twenty. Six million led by meg whitman. What do you guys make this news. There's a lot of. there's a lot to unpack. You're right the amount. They've raised be <hes>. That they're divesting of assets sort of as part of this razor almost next to it which you don't usually hear about <hes>. You guys think jeff. Lindsay william whoever wants to start here. What do you guys think of of mortals gaming club. And the way they're going. Let me go last. I have some some hot takes. Let me last go first. Then let's let's open with some hot takes you're all my take on. This is a little is a little more nuanced. But i think what's really interesting about this announce those two things to read into this. One is a mortals has just not done well as in east sports work right. They haven't won anything. They haven't really built a differentiated brand. They've been blown. Apart in the lifestyle category versus other orbs about the best thing they did back in late two thousand eighteen by gamers club right and make a move into south american marquette. This reads like a real strategic shift into you know gaming services and service provision right. Because you don't. You don't sell off both gated franchises and in particular. You don't sell off call of duty called duties actually starting to perform now like it's unusual to sell that asset unless you are <hes>. If you're still committed to really making the team piece work so i think an underscore here as immortals you know is going to be getting out of the team space. I think a second thing i would add to this though in the morrison is the fact that they are announcing looking for a sale of overwatch without the buyer. Immortals Gaming Club Are Getting Out of the Esports Team Space

Got rid of their Call of duty league team And now the overwatch league team. It's selling a team playing and activists call of duty league to one hundred thieves And now so. They've sold off their call of duty league team now. They're saying they want to sell their los angeles valley and overwatch team. In the meantime the raid they raised twenty. Six million led by meg whitman. What do you guys make this news. There's a lot of. there's a lot to unpack. You're right the amount. They've raised be That they're divesting of assets sort of as part of this razor almost next to it which you don't usually hear about You guys think jeff. You don't sell off call of duty called duties actually starting to perform now like it's unusual to sell that asset unless you are If you're still committed to really making the team piece work so i think an underscore here as immortals you know is going to be getting out of the team space. I think a second thing i would add to this though in the morrison is the fact that they are announcing looking for a sale of overwatch without the buyer. List william razi to me because that is a direct that first of all signals a little bit of urgency right like we're trying to get rid of this asset gimme buyers right because like to be honest with you like like you don't need for an asset like that you know you don't you don't really need to do this sort of thing right like you don't know who the people are who are in the market for this The the second thing is. "WHAT'S THE AGE Winnie it? You start getting near periods DAB. I don't know from experience, but but what I'm told is anytime between nine. and thirteen or fourteen usually. Nine. Did you know that. I didn't know that you are nine. I was at the birthday party. When you were born. I've kept track. Yes, yes, I did. In some ways, it has been easier Hamilton to talk to his kids about periods because they're so young. This not an issue to them. God I remember my dad sex talk, it was like such a mess, and he was so uncomfortable and I was uncomfortable, and I was probably eleven or twelve or thirteen I don't know, and for these guys is just like right. That's the thing that happens because you said. It's the thing that happens, and it's the thing we talk about 'cause we talk about it. We just have super easy. Conversations is not a big deal Hamilton. Talk to his mom so openly about things like this, not as a kid growing up, and not as an adult when she got sick and he doesn't want his kids to go through the same difficulties he did I want the kids. If they have a problem, any kind of problem, all three of them. With sex, Genitalia reproductive-health whatever instead of keeping to themselves to come and say hey, this thing is going on, and then we can be like bill whatever we'll just. Off We go, we'll figure it out. People, who don't get a period should care about periods because they might have a magistrate or in their life who relies on them? Sometimes, it's just a matter of encouragement and emotional support. My name is Morgan givens I use he him. Pronouns and I am thirty three years old Morgan met his best friend Maryland Garo back in high school, but they're so close that he calls her his sister. They I met in marching band Maryland played the flute and Morgan played the Alto Sax Bass. CLARINET FRENCH HORN and trumpet. And I. Just Kinda took to her and she took the me, so we've been. God, we've been best friends for that is so long. That's almost twenty years so. Maryland is seen more through the good. The bad animals, emotional times of his life I am a trans man, and I take testosterone weekly, and the thing testosterone does overtime. Your period stops. You just don't have a period anymore and I remember when I first started transitioning, she was one of those people who was Mr Corner and had my back like we just have this type of relationship with anything ever happened. The other would always be there. You know my sister was like Yo. You don't have a period no more. That's messed up because I still have a period. My stomach still cramps. My belly gets full, and you don't had to pay the pink tax at all. You owe me pine ice cream and I was like. What like what do you mean a? Ice Cream the pink tax is all of the money mentioned. It will spend on products over their lifetime, so Morgan Marilyn call their ice cream. Deal the period tax. Mortgage, starter bringing ice cream to his sister back in two, thousand, ten and I just picked it up from the local Harris. Teeter because we had weekly brother sister dates and once a week we would get together and watch movies. Grab Beers. Sit around the TV and just talking and get to know each other better and I. I would bring the Pint of ice cream and she will take her and she wouldn't give me any. So Keiichi Arkin, did she deserved it Morgan met his wife Catherine in two thousand fifteen, almost a year after they first started dating, he brought home to meet his family and she learned about the period attacks. The funny thing is. He didn't think it was weird or anything she was just like. Where's my ice cream? So even though they don't live in the same city anymore. Anymore mortgage figured out a way to keep the tradition going and the next thing I know I'm getting taxed by my wife for a pint of ice cream amount and my sister who I have to Vin Mo the money to now, so she can go by her own pipe, because she lives down in North Carolina and that is me just kind of paying it forward. And trying to do something for them that that's Nice 'cause like periods then they're not. They're not that great all the time. So when we spoke to Morgan, we made sure to ask the truly important questions like what flavors of ice cream are acceptable under the tax? My sister's favorite ice cream flavors anything chocolate anything coffee in it. Though my wife, her favorite ice cream is meant chocolate chip anything. She go eat all the ice cream. Just be sitting there like I have a bite and she'd be like no. I'm definitely a fan of mint, chocolate chip and I'm not alone. A two thousand and four study found that almost fifty percent of six. American women crave chocolate specifically before they get their periods, and Morgan is super aware of that when it comes to the woman in his life, so it means that grace is given an in moments when my wife sometimes gets very anxious shortly before her period comes on and I know this about her. You know that week that her periods on I'm going to pick up more choice around the house because. When you're, you're just tired. Morgan has tried to get other than his life on board with the tax, but he hasn't had much luck. So most of the dues I talk to about it. They don't really really get it and they think is weird, but I'm like. Are you paying attention to anything that women have to deal with brother leash? You can do with them some ice cream, so yeah, they don't understand it. They don't get it, but all the women in my life. It's great. They're like yes. More ice cream taxes so I guess I'm owner something. For the record, this isn't just talk I. Know Morgan, and he really is the suite of a person. When I see my wife, or it's my sister and they're just like. My period is whipping behind. You know I. I know that maybe they might need a little more support or I. Check in on them just a little bit more to see. If there's anything I can do or if they need anything, I just go ahead and said that little twelve dollars. because. I know they're going to come calling for that. Ben and Jerry's shoot away. Ice Cream caused now need to start setting inside of twenty, but It's all good. I would love someone to bring me ice cream once a month. And mentors of any age could all use someone like Morgan and Hamilton to turn to when they need some extra support during their periods. Feeling my flow wants to help you start important conversations at critical moments like when you're figuring out how you can support the measures in your life. "On this episode. We're talking about late bloomers. And what it's like when most of your friends have gotten their periods and you still haven't so I was more of an early boomer. I was ten when I got my first period. I remember sitting with my mom and my aunt. Juniors it's a diner in Brooklyn New York. They're famous for their cheesecake. So we're eating dinner and I remember feeling clammy. It was super uncomfortable and I knew it must have been my period starting and I just didn't want to deal with that. I mean I was ten. I was a kid. It just seemed like such a heavy thing to have to deal with thinking back on it now. It seems Kinda crazy to be injuring into womanhood as people like to say but I was still figuring out sixth grade Algebra and my own early experience has me wondering what's the opposite like so our producer Mia Warrant and is sat down with a real life late bloomer to find out I were going up and I thought thirteen was the time that every single person got their periods so even people got up before it was like that so this is Lola her pronounce or she and her. She's a junior in high school and she lives in New York City last year. Lola was fifteen. She still hadn't gotten a first period but all of her friends had already gotten. There's so I was definitely nervous. what if? I just don't ever get it and I think I just was nervous. Maybe there was something wrong with my body and I would lola skinny. And she's small for her age. She wondered if that had something to do with it and the waiting it was driving her crazy. I think I've definitely was like what am I gonNA get at one? Am I going to get it? I want it and then I started really worrying because I was like well. My sister got it earlier and my mom got it earlier like why am I not getting it should happen? Did he talk about that with your mom years? Yeah definitely my mom I was like. I'm really nervous that I haven't gone and she was like seriously. Don't worry like it'll happen when it happens below. It didn't believe her mom. She was the worried something was wrong with her and she was feeling some serious foam. Oh she noticed a kinship among her friends who had already started their periods. They enjoyed talking about. It just seemed like such a community to me like everyone kind of has this thing in common and they share this one thing and like they have these conversations about like cramps and like tampons. And but like I didn't really get that because I wasn't in on it. You know during a conversation. People talking about their cramps Yeah totally and like why did I say that? I don't have my period like I don't know those cramps. They just so badly wanted to be a part of that conversation and it did feel isolating for me like not having it and stuff. Lola says her friends probably knew she was lying but they didn't call her out and then finally my parents were away and one of my really good family friends was with me. I went to the bathroom. It was just like a little bit of blood and I was like it's happening. I was feeling honestly like relief because I was like such a late bloomer to everybody so I was just really excited to get it. Lola's family friend brought her flowers and red cake. Some of her friends came over. They celebrated but watching the tonys after all that waiting. It finally happened. But MIA and I started to wonder. Was Lola right to be worried about being late? Bloomer. Is there a normal age forgetting first period? So is here. She's a pronounced she and her. She's a journalist and she's good at digging into things in finding our answers to difficult questions so she does some research to find out more. So in the United States the average age to get your first period is twelve and for anybody. That's there period later. There's a medical term for that call. Constitutional delayed puberty. That sounds really intense. What does that actually mean? Well it's basically a fancy name for someone who starts developing later than the national average age which is twelve. Yeah so it's Kinda like the official medical term for late bloomer. And you know it's often inherited from your parents so your mom got her period at eighteen or if your dad was a late bloomer. It's more likely for you to be one. That wasn't the case for Lola Though. And it wasn't the case for me my sister either we'll right and that's because it's just about genetics. There's actually a lot of different things that can affect. When you begin to go through. Puberty Diet is one thing. Kids are eating different foods and they did fifty years ago and this can affect when you start to develop. Scientists are also looking exposure to chemicals. These can affect wind. Puberty begins. Okay cool but here's the thing. Puberty isn't a single event. Like getting your first period on average it lasts about four and a half years. So biologically can mean a lot of different things for you can mean. Developing breasts are growing pubic hair. All that fun stuff. Yeah so you know. All of this assay. The term constitutional delayed puberty might sound kind of technical. But it's not something to worry about. The truth is that people develop in different ways and at different rates and starting period is just one part of the whole process right and you know to be clear. There are other reasons. You Might Start Your period later than twelve like if you're a serious athlete. And you're burning a lot of body fat like dancers or gymnasts. I remember when I was a dancer in high school. I skipped my periods. Sometimes for a month or two right decrease body fat can delay puberty or make you skip periods. But what should someone do? If they're really concerned about it. I said just talk to your parents or caring. Adult in most cases is just a matter of understanding that everyone has a little bit differently in other words. There's nothing wrong with being late bloomer. Right when Lola finally got her period at fifteen she realized she was a late bloomer and she was fine with that but when we talked she realized something else. That didn't really sit so well with her. I just think it's so strange like this welcoming to womanhood thing it is. It is weird like since when I'm not a woman I like. I'm just not like I'm still a teenager and I'm so fine being a teenager right now. I don't really need to be a woman that welcoming into womanhood thing. That's really typical to hear my mom. My Aunt said the same thing when I got my first period. But let's unpack that so on a biological level getting your period means you're physically able to conceive but just because your body's closer to adulthood it doesn't mean that you are and the truth is a first period can cause kinds of emotions to bubble up. Lola didn't like the way people were telling her she was suddenly a woman and I feel like can be true for anyone going through puberty. First period doesn't always mark the transition from girlhood to womanhood. That's because not everyone who has a period is a woman we're GONNA get into that more and another episode. Feeling flow is produced by MIA. Warren are sound. Engineers Caroliina Rodriguez intern. Is Emma Forbes produced and distributed by Lindsay Williams and? I'm your house Communica Shoddy.
