"Talk to an emergency physician and public health professor at George Washington University, about the latest CDC guidance for those who are currently vaccinated and those who remain unvaccinated. Will also discuss the latest scientific findings on infection and transmission of covert 19 among those who received the Corona virus vaccines. Then I'll be joined by Dr T. A. Dol, chief clinical operations officer at the Trevor Project to discuss LGBT Q mental health And how the pandemic has intensified. You depression and anxieties is really important. Discussions are on the way first to get things started. I'm joined by Dr Lena When an emergency physician and public health professor at George Washington University, she's a contributing columnist for The Washington Post and a CNN medical analyst. Previously, she served as Baltimore's health commissioner, and she's author of the forthcoming book. Lifelines a doctor's journey in the fight for public health doctor when thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us. And let's begin with the latest CDC guidance that came out a few days ago. What stood out to you as the most important takeaways for the public to understand from that update First of all great to join your Ryan. Thank you for your work in hello to your audience. You know, I think that the CDC guidelines, they are step in the right direction because what the CDC has been doing is to say now that we're getting more and more people vaccinated. Now that we have a lower level of induction in the community, we can begin relaxing some guidelines. S so what they've done. The first is to make clear that out toward Even unvaccinated. People don't need to be wearing masks in a lot of circumstances, which, frankly, is common sense. If you are living in an area where you can easily cross the street, if somebody is coming over towards you, you don't need to be worrying mask That doesn't really make sense. I actually like them. Two out of three rules that Dr Lindsay Mar on, but others have popped that which is If you're unvaccinated ub two out of three things outdoors mask or distancing. So if you're indoors, you need baths and distancing. But if you're outdoors and your distance you don't need about. So I'm glad that the city state actually embraced this kind of common sense Proposals for unvaccinated people. And I think that the also figures he did was the same. If you are vaccinated that decreases your risk for basically every activity, And so if you are now vaccinated things that were higher risk are now moved to lower risk. That said, I also think the CDC actually should go a lot further because I don't think that the American population is responding to societal levels of risk and what you should do in your personal life. I think people want to be told. What can I do in my life when I am fully vaccinated? Big question seems to center around the possibility of infection and transmission among those who are vaccinated. If someone has received the vaccine and the likelihood of them getting infected with covert 19, or potentially spreading it to others, is extremely low. That would seem to indicate that they'd be able to safely return to a much more normal life. What do we know about that at this point? Yes, And we are getting accumulating evidence of this. So now we have incredible amounts of real world evidence of the U. S from the UK from Israel from other places that show That two things are true. One is that If you are fully vaccinated, so, meeting two weeks after him, you your second dose of the vaccine or or two weeks after the windows of Justin Johnson than you are now. That you risk of your becoming severely film is extremely low. The risk of you getting symptomatically ILM is even very low. So just to give you the latest numbers on a CDC report, they found them as of last week. Out of 87 million fully faxes, People 7157 people got infected, which sounds like a lot, but that is a rate of 0.8%. That's really low. And that and for those individuals, to my knowledge there have not yet been cases of individuals who are fully vaccinated, who are documented to be super spreaders. Before then spreading probe. It's other people. All this is to say, I think we have overwhelming evidence down that vaccination protects you. It protects others around you. And I think there needs to be the public health guidance needs to be adjusted for the individual with fully vaccinated to save. Look, not everybody is ready to return to normal life. And people should should. People have different colors of risk. Some people are going to look at Wow. More than 7000. People got infected. I don't want to be one of them. I understand that, But there are plenty of people who will say, Well, look at those numbers to say I am I can live with the rate of infection of 0.8%. I want to get back to every aspect of my pre pandemic normal and we shouldn't judge them for that, either. I'm joined by Dr Lena When an emergency physician and public health professor at George Washington University, she's a contributing columnist for The Washington Post in a CNN medical analyst, and she previously served as Baltimore's health commissioner. Let me go back to the outdoor activities. Another area where I think there's a bit of confusion. What exactly do we know about the virus and how it acts in outdoor settings and We have a pretty solid grasp on outdoor spread and transmission. At this point we do and here's why so we know that being outdoors is supposed to be indoors is incredibly protective. The likelihood of spreading coronavirus outdoors decreases by 18 19 fold as compared to indoors, and that's because the outdoor air disperses whatever virus particles. They have actually been relatively few cases of documented outdoors infection. There have been studies out of China out of Ireland about other places that looked at contact freezing and they really found truly a handful of infections that were documented to be outdoors and so in terms of people are worried. Hey, what if somebody runs by me or is spiking by these? That transient. There's literally we can't say at this point. If we can't say there's no, there's no such thing as zero. Right? However, that is a minute school minister. Risk. I don't think that's ever been documented of jogger, giving another jogger who they happened to be passing. Coronavirus. I would be more worried about setting with a whole bunch of unvaccinated people packed together. I think everybody's vaccinated. There's no danger. But if there but if there are some people in the group who are unvaccinated, I worry about their danger to one another. Not so much the danger of the back. Neither person catching some people be unvaccinated, but rather if there are many group if there are many unvaccinated individuals, for example, Children who cannot yet be vaccinated. I think that there is still Theoretical risk, but that risk is much reduced outdoors. I would much rather that those people are in close proximity outdoors than indoors and let me follow up on kids and young adults. The reopening schools has been a major issue in this country for quite some time, Parents, teachers administrators all interested in how the virus potentially spreads among younger people. What the risk factors are like Now that's some schools have featured in person learning for a few months, and there's a lot more data on this issue. We've come a long way and understanding that part of the pandemic correct. Absolutely well, We know that kids definitely get sick from Corona virus. The most recent numbers from the American Academy of Pediatrics are that there have been 3.7 million Children. Who have been diagnosed with Kobe 19 in the US since the beginning of the pandemic there. A 190.8% of them were hospitalized. And tragically as of last week, Our numbers show that 296 Children have died from Kobe, my team just for comparison. During an average flu season, the number of Children who come to influenza range from 35 to 186 so We're higher than the number of who died from flu, but not many magnitudes higher And so Children, especially younger Children tend to transmit left probably than adults do, however, they can transmit an older Children. Will tran transmit at the same rate, probably as adults. Um, vaccines are now available defies the vaccine is available for 16 and older..

There's still a federal mask mandate in place, but the CDC is expected to update its guidance on masks later today, NPR health correspondent Maria Godoy is following this story. Good morning, Maria. Good morning, Noel. So the CDC is issuing an update on masks. Why? Well, when big reason is the growing number of Americans who have now been vaccinated against covert 19. More than half of the adult population has gotten at least one dose. And so that's helping pave the way for the beginning of a return to normal. Here's Dr Anthony Fauci, America's top infectious disease expert, speaking on ABC. Pretty common sense now that outdoor the risk is really, really quite low, particularly if you're vaccinated. I spoke with Dr Monica Gandhi. She's an infectious disease specialist at the University of California, San Francisco. She notes that other countries with high vaccination rates don't have outdoor mass mandates. Israel released their outdoor mass mandates a week or so ago. The U. K does not mask out the words and so we're also probably looking at other countries. You have very high vaccination rates even higher than we and they're saying, OK, this is the time And the other thing is, studies have been showing that unlike being indoors when you're outdoors, the risk of transmission in general is lower. How much lower Well, I asked that question to Lindsay Mars. She's a researcher, Virginia tax. She studies how viruses travel in the air, and she's also study Mass. And here's what she said. Virus just cannot accumulate in the air outdoors. It's like putting a drop of dye into the ocean. You know if you happen to be right next to it. Then maybe you'll get a whiff of it, but it's going to become diluted rapidly into the huge atmosphere. One analysis suggested that the risk of transmitting the Corona viruses 19 times lower outdoors and indoors. But Marr says that's likely a conservative estimate and the real risk is probably a lot lower. In fact, another study out of Ireland looked at more than 230,000 covert cases in that country through March of this year, and it found that just one in 1000 cases could be traced to outdoor transmission, like putting a drop of dye into the ocean. So interesting. Are there any conditions, though, in which health experts say when you're outside, you still should wear a mask. Well, so first, I should note that actually, some areas of the U. S still have outdoor mass mandates. Although the CDC guidance may change that And also, I should note that Dr Fauci has signaled that the guidance will address masking by vaccinated versus unvaccinated people that said in journal general, in terms of the science, all the doctors and researchers that I've spoken with, say Depends on the situation. So if you just passing someone on the street or wasn't buying a bike, there is no need to wear a mask outdoors. But if you're in a crowded situation like saying outdoor farmer's market, or you're a concert, it's packed it. Still make sense to wear a mask. You know, Here's Lindsay Morgan. My general rules of thumb would be if I'm having a face to face conversation with someone. And if I can put my arms about out there within arm's reach for more than Minute or two. Then I would mask if I know everyone around me and I am vaccinated. Then I wouldn't worry about it. So if you don't know someone's vaccination status, just follow that arm's length rule for when to mask outdoors, especially if you're in an area with high transmission. If you're both fully vaccinated, no need for mass And, of course, keep those mess on if you're in a public space indoors, like the grocery store. NPR health correspondent Maria Godoy. "This is science Friday. I'm Ira Flatow. Throughout the pandemic masks have been a big issue right. First came a mask shortage, then debates about statewide mask mandates and then finally refusal by some people to wear them. Well this week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention put out another wrinkle guidance on double masking, wearing one mask over another. So what is the science behind masks and how they work? Like what? There's a double mask really do. How does a mask trap of Iris? Is there? An expiration date? Toe a mask? I think we've all wondered these. So here with the answers is Dr Lindsay Mar, professor of civil and environmental engineering at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. Welcome to science Friday. Thank you so much for having me. It's a pleasure to be here. You must get asked these questions all the time. I have been asked these questions. Hundreds, if not thousands of times in the past year. Good. So you're You're well versed. Answer ours when we asked them, Okay, so let's talk about the new CDC recommendations for Double Masking does wearing two masks, double the filtration or how does that work? The way it works is that the CDC recommendation for double masking is actually getting it to different properties that are really important for a masks performance. The first is filtration. The ability of a mass to filter out small particles or weeks sometimes call them aerosols, and the second part is the fit of the mask because you can have the best filtration in the world like an N 95. But if it doesn't fit if it leaks around the edges, it's like you have big holes in your mask. And so the second mask is then sort of helping to push the first one against your face. Better making a better seal. Exactly the type of double masking that is recommended by CDC. Now that they found works really well, is to use a surgical type of mask also called a procedure mask, preferably one. That's a S T M certified because those are shown those have been proven to filter out particles. Well. So you put that on the bottom, But it's a it's a rectangle. It doesn't really fit well to our faces and inevitably has gaps around the cheeks. So if you put a second mascot, tight fitting cloth mask on top of that You can greatly improve the fit, reduce leaks, and you add another layer of filtration. Now mess heavy made of all different types of materials. What are the basics of how a mask traps of virus? One Common misconception is that masks work by saving out particles that are larger than the holes in the mask like straining pasta, for example. But in reality filtration works in a very different way. The mask itself the fabric or the the poly propylene fibers that are used to make an n 95 or surgical mask are essentially this obstacle course that the air has to flow around. So if you shrink yourself down to the size of one of those individual fibers You are twisting and turning in the areas you're trying to navigate through this maze of fibers as you do that any particles or aerosols lighter in the air. May not be able to make all those twists and turns and may end up crashing into one of the fibers and being filtered out. What makes him in 95 mask so much better than another kind of mask 90 five's air really effective for a couple of reasons. First, they're made out of a special type of material called Melt blown, non woven poly propylene and these are very, very small fibers that air then pressed together, and they have very small spaces in between them. The second thing that in in 95 has is an electrostatic charge. Kind of like rubbing a balloon against your hair. And then your hair sticks to it. They apply a charge to the N 95. Then it is better able to capture particles that are naturally charged that are kind of coming towards it trying to get through there. So this electro tad static charge attracts the particles Thean 95 access an additional way. To trap the particles in there. Is it harder with this double masking idea? Toe actually breathe through the mask. And is that possible problem for people who say you know, I'm just not gonna wear these double masks because I can't breathe through them. Absolutely. This is a concern. One of the most important things with your mask is that you can easily breathe through it because I fit you Can't it's going to be uncomfortable and you won't want to wear it. And secondly, if it's too thick or too hard to breathe through, then it's more likely that air is going to leak in through the sides wants to find it's the easiest way in. And so certainly if double masking makes it too hard to breathe, Then you need to look for another solution. And where would you look for that? How do you shop for a mask? There's a couple of things to look for. In a mask. There is the basic cloth masks. But and those work, okay. They might. Filter out 50% of particles on average, but you you should actually look for a mass that has a dedicated layer of filtration material, and that could be the surgical type mask or they'll say, a poly propylene filter. I've seen things that have HEPA filters, which stands for high efficiency particulate air filtration those air very effective, too. We have found that vacuum cleaner bags work well and certain types of H Vac filters so you definitely should look for some kind of filtering layer in your mask. You also want something that fits well, then people's faces are such different shapes that this is somewhat of a personal preference thing, but also it's really important to have one of those metal knows bridges that you convention to fit closely around your nose, because that's a place where there's a lot of it's easy to have a lot of leakage..

"This is all things considered. I'm Ailsa Chang and I'm Ari Shapiro after the insurrection at the capital. For a moment it looked like Donald Trump's lock on the Republican Party might have been weakening. Republican leaders told lawmakers to vote their conscience on impeachment. The top Republican Senator Mitch McConnell, accused the president of feeding the mob lies now Many of those who broke with the former president are being punished for it in Wyoming, their calls for Congresswoman Liz Cheney to resign after she voted to impeach Trump. In Arizona, the state GOP censured Cindy McCain for opposing Trump in the election. And today in the Senate. Nearly all of the Republicans, including McConnell, voted that putting a former president on trial for impeachment is unconstitutional. For a look at the future of the party. Whit Ayers joins us Now He is a longtime Republican pollster and president of North Star Opinion Research. Hi. There are good to be with you. Donald Trump is no longer in the White House. He's not even on Twitter. So why are so many Republicans across the country remaining deeply loyal? Even now? Our January 6 was the opening battle in the war for the soul of the Republican Party. The GOP is seriously split into our governing faction and a populous faction. Governing faction dominated the party for years and still dominates today among elected officials. The populist faction was present before Donald Trump's candidacy. But Trump expanded it and grew it into a dominant force in Republican primaries, although it never became a majority force in the country. Almost all the condemnation from the GOP about the events of January, 6 has come from the governing wing of the party. Very little has come from the populist wing. But that condemnation has been so quickly. If not squelch, then at least slapped down. Is there a place for what you describe is the governing wing of the party in today's GOP. That is a major question. Going forward. We've seen many of the stalwarts of the governing wing in the Senate. Declined to run for reelection. You're talking about Rob Portman of Ohio, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, Richard Burr of North Carolina and Lamar Alexander, who did not run again in 2020. All four of those gentlemen. No core parts of the governing wing of the Republican Party in the Senate, and all four are going to be gone. You know you're describing it as the governing wing and the populist wing. But you could also accurately describe it as the reality based wing. And the wing that believes in hoaxes in conspiracies that is willing to deny reality. The populist Faction is mainly the tea party movement of 2010 with the famous and inflammatory leader. It's the 21st century version of populism. Anti elite anti intellectual anti establishment, anti media, anti immigrant anti Wall Street and the populace faction is not going away even if Donald Trump does. You've been a Republican pollster for a long time, and you've witnessed other splits in the party. There was a split over the Iraq war, there have been split over budget deficits. Does this seem fundamentally different from those? This is fundamentally different from those We have had populace in the past in America, but none of them became president. United States So this is a fundamentally different sort of challenge. I think For the Republican Party to face you're describing it as a challenge to the Republican Party. Do you also see it as a challenge to America as a democracy. Our government works better when we have two vibrant, competitive, responsible political parties. And if the Republican Party splits apart, it's going to be a problem for our government. I think the Biden administration needs an effective and loyal opposition. We work better that way. Fair point, But I was actually thinking about it in a slightly different context, which is if the Republican Party does coalesce around this message that says free and fair elections can be overturned. If you don't like the outcome. Is that a threat to American democracy? The Republican Party is not going to coalesce around that message, Ari there too many folks who have too much respect for democracy and too much respect for our government to coalesce around that sort of message. I appreciate your confidence. What makes you so sure? Because the governing faction dominates the party among elected officials. It always has it did throughout the trump years, and those elected officials are not going to somehow forsake their fundamental oath to the Constitution of the United States. Republican pollster. Whit Ayers. Thank you for talking with us, Marie, Good to be with you. Knew more contagious variants of the Corona virus are spreading across the U. S. Which has many people wondering if there's more that they can do to protect themselves and helps stop that spread. One thing. Some public health experts suggest double masks for more on that. We're joined now by NPR Health correspondent Maria Godoy. Hey, Maria. Hi. All right, So, really, I have to layer two masks on my face now. Yeah, That's the idea. Thies. New variants are more transmissible and that means we need to improve our level of precautions and one of the easiest ways to do that is to improve our mass by doubling up. That's according to Lindsay Mars. She's a researcher, Virginia Tech who studies how viruses transmit near a cloth mask might be 50% effective at blocking viruses and aerosols. We're at the point now, though, with so many people who are infected, and these more easily transmissible variants that we need. Better than 50%. By double masking, Maher says You can end up with something that 75% effective or more. Okay, well, I'm thinking about my parents right now. Who like to go hard core on this kind of advice into mess are better than one. I could see them trying to wear like three masks at once. Now. Is that a good idea? No because adding layers will improve filtration. But on Leah to point if your mask make it too hard to breathe, and air is going to start flying through the gaps on the sides got it. All right. So what type of masks are best, like Cloth masks, a cloth and surgical mask. Should we like double up on and 90 five's? What do you think in an ideal world we'd all be wearing in 90 five's, but they are still in short supply and still need to be reserved for health care workers. You can buy a mass called a K and 95, which is a mask. That means a Chinese standard for particle removal. But There are a lot of fake K identifies out there. So if you're going to buy one, you should check the CDC website to see which brands are authorized. And as for cloth versus surgical mask you should be wearing both, Marr says. You should wear the surgical mask closest your face because they're made out of non woven material. That's very effective. It filtering particles. Downside is a lot of these mass that loosely. So where a cloth mask on top of it to get a tighter fit and to add an extra layer of filtration, right fit is really important. You don't want your mask slipping. No, absolutely not. People. Please don't let your nose hangover Mass because that defeats the purpose of me to a mask works best if it's seals tightly to your face, and that is true, regardless of what it's made of. You want to create a tight steel so that air is escaping out of the sides, and double masking can help with that. So can making sure your mask fits properly. Okay, so bottom line should we be double masking all of the time? Right now. If you're just going out to walk the dog, you're fine with single mass. But if you're heading to the grocery store, it's time to double mask And don't forget you still need to physical distance. Wash your hands, avoid crowds and poorly ventilated spaces. It all adds up. That is NPR's Maria Godoy. Thank you, Maria. Thanks so much. This is NPR news..

Well, I count the first few, just his people say Happy New Year for the first couple of weeks and then happy New year melts away and the grim realities of another year under covert 19 and the Brutal economic conditions that it's Raj begin to settle in. And then the day to day grind of the people's drives you crazy, but you're cohabiting with you have to just put out of your mind. Just crawl back under your bed. He didn't recommend a replacement. He didn't didn't have any sense of obligation to see through the patient through to a recovery. Why you yelling? It was It's all your fault Bread. It is. It's Brett's fault. So I've got a lot to do today. Bread. Please don't send us off on these negative jags anymore. Right in no problem. Thank you. For 15. 80 88 10 is is our number if you want to text us If you want to call us There's a lot to get to. I'll just mention David Cay Johnston because we just love having him on the show. And you old. You'll note that I may put off a little bit of the Georgia conversation because that is significant. I mean, essentially, the future and control of the Senate is in the balance in Georgia. As you're aware, I'll put off a little bit of that. To sort of included in our David Cay Johnston, not part of the part of the show. That's right after 11 o'clock, the Pulitzer Prize winner and best selling author Nice, I'll tell you one thing about Georgia. And it just something to keep in mind because you know, there's all this handicapping going on. And like you. What can you tell? The pollsters are wrong? Pollsters have had been as you know, in recent history, way wrong, Munson. Thanks So anyway, when you look at early voting in Georgia To the extent that you can tell anything there from early voting. Um You know what? You're I'll ask you the cage. Oh, audience, maybe what you think, but there's three million early votes already. Okay, now that Z That's a lot And the reason I say it's a lot is if you look at the last election turnout, I mean, just a short time ago in November, I'm talking about in Georgia. They only had five million total votes. So you have three million early votes already. And what GOP Shall we say strategists and analysts. What they're saying. Is we need. The GOP needs 800,000 to a million to carry the state. I don't know. They're gonna get it because if you look at the And you can watch this through the morning for us. But if you look at the polling places so far in Georgia to transmit light And the weather is good. So will of we'll watch it. Okay. On and again. This is I'm just one more person going based on this information. What can I determine? And how can I possibly forecast the outcome? So I don't really know either. But I'm just saying those are variables that are working. And George is critical to control of the Senate and really putting through any kind of of agenda on the part of the new president. Joe Biden, right? I just really think you run into the danger territory of trying to predict what's happening based on what you see on the TV and what have you Although I did see some of the observers say that they saw a lot of young people loading early in a lot of African Americans, so that's encouraging. You know, it certainly is. Um Well, it looks like I You know, I'm the covert 19 I I see so many things here and there in California. We're in an awful state of things. Yeah. But I saw this piece in the Chronicle. Why she 02 monitors an indoor ventilation, maybe a key to curbing Cove. It's spread. Ventilation and indoor space is critical to preventing the spread of covert 19 along squaring social decision and a hand hygiene. They say that clean indoor air is an important piece of the pandemic Fighting tool box. But they say it's the one that Is paid the least attention. In the early months of the pandemic, most public health agencies and experts stated. The Corona virus spreads primarily through respiratory droplets. These particles. Larger than five microns in diameter travel ballistically, according to the Chronicle. And then are pulled to the ground by gravity within a range of about 3 to 5 ft. I'm chuckling because I love how we're all two things. Now. One is we're semi experts on droplets and Masks and transmissibility. And I mean depending on who you speak with. We've all had to become educated in this stuff, right? Exactly. And so, like, In other words, how far will go Well, you know, I have our little really gold 3 to 5. Right? And then it changes the next week. I've actually heard that the drop is can remain quite quite viable for 20 to 25. Ft. Wow, you know, and Depending on the degree of confidence that something has said with right Yeah, you end up, you know, walking away with a different I think, frankly. 6. FT is a pretty solid distance based on everything I've seen. Certainly you could get an environment and these air the environment that brought this this peace talks about when you're in a closed environment. Yeah. Air condition environments We've talked about on the show before that. That can help suspend the droplets in the air for Ah longer period of time. And they can travel further distances then No. Does this say something that remember during the fires? We could smell the smoke in the studio. Is that a bad sign? What do you mean that you could whether or not you can. You're talking. I don't know your question. Well, the air system the air system, at least on the second floor of our our studio. We could smell the smoke. Uh, you know, there were so many of our studio is mentioned in the piece of product. Yes, right now we have poor ventilation. Um, I gotta get Cove in markets. What? I want to know that somebody talked right down off the ledge going. Yeah. Smoke in the studio. I mean, I could smell it. This place is a death trap draft. Why you yelling? These droplets have superpower because they could remain suspended in the air for prolonged periods of time. This is what we're talking about, much smaller particles can float around the air and travel far beyond 6 ft, according to researchers. If the virus is emitted in with these smaller particles. On. Do you know Peter Chan hung the infection disease expert. He was on with Pat yesterday already heard it. You see, it's my gosh. She's great. Yeah, exactly. But they say that the virus should be thought of Cigarette smoke. So maybe this is sort of to what you're saying. Bread I saw. I saw that quote. And because I've been wondering that for a long time if I have my mascot and I'm walking in the parking garage, and I walked through a cloud of smoke from somebody smoking on the sidewalk. Does that mean that the virus can get into my respiratory system? Even if the mass is over me because I can still smell the smoke with the mass gone, Hmm. Lindsay marred engineering professor at Virginia Tech. Who specializes in the airborne transmission of viruses. Says it behaves like cigarette smoke. If you can imagine that you and I are in a room with a cigarette smoker, the smoke and build up in the air, But if the room is very well ventilated than the smoke will be removed. They just make the case for ventilation being key? Yeah, yeah, but it's it's more complicated than just whether place seems stuffy or not. It's It's kind of hard to gauge. So they talk about Seo to monitors these carbon dioxide monitors. I'm going toe posted to my twitter feed. If you want to read more about it, you can But the CEO to um in parts per million can help analyze the relative ventilation of the space. Essentially, that's what they're saying. Okay, so you can use the C E 02 levels as a guide to how well a place is.

Pandemic Advances Scientific Understanding Of Viruses' Air Transmission
"Up, we're taking a look back at some of 20 twenties major events and one of the most remarkable scientific advances this year came in our understanding of how respiratory viruses can be transmitted from one person to another through the air. Krone virus pandemic obviously made this an urgent question. And NPR's Nell Greenfield Boys reports that old scientific ideas quickly got thrown out of the window. For decades. The prevailing idea about respiratory viruses was that some were airborne, and some just weren't so back in January, Thea understanding of how viruses spread through the air. Was really primitive and incorrect. Lindsay Mars, a researcher at Virginia Tech, who studies virus transmission, she says textbooks and research papers said an airborne virus was something like measles. It could be breathed out in tiny particles called aerosols that hang in the air. Those aerosols contractual long distances from room to room. All of that was very different from non airborne viruses like flew in the common cold. Those were thought to spread through coughs and sneezes, big droplets that travel just a few feet. Maher says. This whole simplistic picture was just wrong. There were very small number of people in the world. I think who really understood at that time how viruses spread through the air, and these people realize that the new coronavirus might be airborne at short distances. That is if people talked or saying the virus could be in small particles, as well as the big droplets and coughs and in a poorly ventilated space. These particles could build up as the Corona virus outbreak took off. These experts started making a lot of noise about this and people paid attention. Maher says She thought it would take 30 years for more nuanced ideas about airborne transmission to gain widespread acceptance. But it's happened in months. It's been pretty wild to see airborne transmission of viruses become Big news. Scientific studies came superfast Josh than Tar. Pia is a researcher at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. We're not even 12 months in and We know things about this virus that you know, we don't know about some viruses that we've had around for decades. His medical center took care of some of the first people with Corona virus in the United States. Santo Pia recalls standing at the end of their beds with a device that collected air while they talked or breathed his lab, then analyzed the tiny airborne droplets. Looking for the genetic signature of the Corona virus. We were getting positives more than one positive in the air samples, and I can't say the words that I said But you're kind of broadcast this, but I was shocked signs of the virus were in such tiny particles. He worried that nothing less than the most protective masks could stop it. Soon, though, studies showed that even basic cloth masks were able to reduce the amount of virus that gets out into the air and suddenly mask wearing became routine sent our P A was floored and how ventilation became part of the normal daily conversation. You know how well ventilated is the space shouldn't be spending time inside or outside. You know how much all these things it's changed so much about the way we view the world. The question is, Will this be a lasting change? Donald Milton is a research Teacher at the University of Maryland School of Public Health. He spent years showing how better ventilation in dorms or offices is associated with a lower risk of respiratory disease transmission, he says. We need to figure out engineering solutions to improve the safety of indoor spaces like getting better ventilation, using air filters, even using special lights up by a room ceiling to disinfect circulating air. I want to see us understand how it is that you can make her Restaurant, a safe place to be during flu season and during a pandemic. I think it's doable, but he's afraid that once vaccines get this virus in check, people will lose interest at least until the next pandemic. Nell Greenfield Boys NPR news

CDC walks back guidance on aerosol spread of coronavirus
"Friday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention briefly became the first major health organization in the world to say the Corona virus might be spreading frequently through the air over the weekend, the CDC website said that code 19 spreads commonly through particles expelled when people talk or cough or breathe. And that these particles may travel farther than 6 ft. Then today, the CDC dropped that guidance from its website. We're here to talk about aerosols and confusion at the CDC is NPR's pink long Hey, they're paying Hi. I'm Elise. So more please on what the CDC posted and then deleted. Yeah, Absolutely. So on Friday, CDC website was changed to say that parasol spread might be one of the most common ways coronavirus suspending And remember, for a long time. Now, the public has been hearing that the Corona virus mostly spreads through droplets, like when somebody sneezes are costs on you or through touching contaminated surfaces that has been the CDC is position. But the idea that the virus could in certain settings be spreading through the air is something that researchers have been considering for many months now, so super spending events where A lot of people are getting infected at once seemed to be happening and crowded, mostly indoor settings, and researchers say that that's probably because people across the room are breathing in clouds of the air slides. Virus particles wafting through City's website now says that the aerosol guidance was posted an error and they're still working on figuring out what to say about airborne transmission. Still figuring out what to say and do may possibly there because what is there to figure out? I'm remembering back in July, The World Health Organization, for example, acknowledged that airborne spread in some capacity was possible. Absolutely. And they said that that was possible. You know, in some settings on DH, there still are questions about how long the virus lingers in the air. How far it travels through a room how much you need to breathe and to get infected and also very critically. How frequently expensive sway you know, through the air to people more than 6 ft. Away. And like you said, you know, C C and the World Health Organization have for a while now been saying like, Hey, it is not a good idea to Packer room with people who aren't wearing masks. But they have stopped short of saying that the virus is commonly airborne. Lindsay Mar, who's an aerosols researcher at Virginia Tech. She and some colleagues have been pushing for health agencies to recognize that the virus spreads through the air. Those in public health have thought that if they say a virus is airborne, it's going to cause panic in the pen. It could be worse than the disease itself. She says that past researchers haven't spent a lot of time studying how aerosols spread disease, so it's kind of unknown and a little bit mysterious, and she also says that labeling the Corona virus as officially airborne. Might require hospitals to take more precautions and they're currently taking but and not acknowledging airborne sped. She says that public health agencies aren't providing information that might really help stop the virus. So to make this practical, what does this mean for May for you when we're out in public? Yeah, well on a personal level, the recommendations people have been getting for months. Still apply. People should avoid crowded indoor situations. They should wear masks to cover their noses and mouths. The big difference, Smart says, is to make sure that there's good ventilation in all of our public buildings, and this could be as simple as opening doors and windows. It can be adjusting dampers and H vac system so that you bring in more outdoor air. A lot of schools and restaurants in office buildings have been thinking about ways to improve airflow. But when the public health guidance doesn't specifically address airborne transmission, it leaves local health authorities on their own making judgment calls and just briefly worth noting Ping This is not the only guidance the CDC has walked back recently. No, it is not on Latin Last Friday, they reverse some controversial testing guidance they posted on August around whether people without symptoms should ever be tested. The answer is, yes. We've also seen reports of political operatives China and start themselves into CDC science papers trying to spend public health messages to make the president's pandemic response look better. While CDC says those aerosols guidance was a draft that was posted by mistake. It's yet another very public and visible reversal, which doesn't help the agency established the public trust that's really needed right now.

New Study Suggests the Virus May Be Airborne
"Very bad news this morning. I just a milestone the US infection rate has officially passed one million people and then this a study has found that the corona virus might exist in tiny airborne droplets. This was found in a Chinese hospital marking the first real world data to suggest that airborne transmission of the disease might be possible. Such aristotle ization has been previously demonstrated in the lab but new droplets with genetic markers of the virus were also detected in hospitals in Wuhan China. This was published in the Journal. Nature quoting from the New York Times. It remains unknown. If the virus in the samples they collected was infectious droplets. That small which are expelled by breathing and talking can remain aloft and be inhaled by others. Those are going to stay in the air floating around for at least two hours said Lindsay Mar a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Virginia. Tech who is not involved with the nature paper quote it strongly suggests that there is potential for airborne transmission and quote Dr Mar and many other scientists say evidence is mounting that the virus is being spread by tiny droplets known as aerosols the World Health Organization has so far downplayed. That possibility saying that the disease is mostly transmitted through larger droplets. That do not remain airborne for long or through the touching contaminated surfaces even with these new findings. The issue is not settled although the corona virus are in a the genetic blueprint of the virus was present in the cells tested scientists. Do Not know yet whether the virus remains infectious or whether the tests just detected harmless virus fragments and quote
