McConnell on coronavirus relief: Senate "ought to pass what we can agree on"

"Billion coronavirus stimulus bill hit another snag on Capitol Hill. Correspondent Linda Kenyon has the latest Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, who sets the floor agenda says No. A comprehensive approach to coronavirus stimulus. Is not the path he will take. It remains my view that we ought to pass what we can agree on, and that means many things. P Peopie vaccine delivery. Additional assistance, health care providers in a variety of other things that are not controversial. What is controversial, he says, is liability protection. This is not just about business is it's about universities about charities. And others who see this developing epidemic of lawsuits headed their way and it's not total immunity. It wouldn't protect you if you were grossly negligent. Would engage intentional misbehavior. Democrats do not support liability protection. They do support aid to state and local governments. Senator McConnell does not a lot of members on our side. Look at the various states that received $150 billion We did in the Caress Act and wonder if this is the monster will need, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer says. Of course it's demonstrably need. Senator McConnell has put the jobs of firefighters Ambulance workers, sanitation officers, police officers in jeopardy. Every governor and mayor across the country has been fighting to keep these people working. And McConnell is pulling the rug out from under them. Senator Schumer also says aid to state and local governments is bipartisan. The state and local funding provisions have broad bipartisan support. The National Governors Association and within the Senate, many Republicans support state and local funding. That's why Senator Schumer says the majority leader should allow a vote on a bipartisan, bicameral, covert released bill that includes a more broad approach. Senator McConnell says. That's just not going to happen. Leaving here without a covert relate package cannot happen. The bill might be attached to a year and government funding bill. Even Senator McConnell says it probably won't be the last word. We'll be back out this after the first of the year. Linda Canyon Washington 18 after religious high school

forty one in the first mobile the Bloomberg sports update on Tom Rogers this is Bloomberg businessweek with Carol master and cheese and Kelly from Bloomberg radio Sears in lululemon Athletica man they've been on quite a tear almost doubling in the past year and chasing you know the story said well you wrote this story is part of a remarkable turnaround well it is and it involves private equity we talk about private equity a lot in the context of those big well known names Blackstone KKR Carlisle and what not this is a firm called advent they were in it at the beginning they got out made a lot of money then they went back in in twenty fourteen and they did even better I sat down exclusively with advanced managing partner in chairman David must suffer as well as Calvin me Tom he is the CEO of lululemon we caught up at one of the loose stores in New York City how old for lack of better term sort of broken was it when you sort of got back in I mean I think the business was had its challenges but at the core the issue was alignment and so part of the power that that private equity can bring is that alignment and so in this case we had a situation where the founder was aligned with the board and the management team and so you'd seen some turnover of the senior management you also didn't have the company in sync with the ability to make investments they were following Wall Street and thinking about what they needed to do that quarter and so I feel like what we saw is this fundamental opportunity was to help regain that alignment and put the platform in place so that the company could establish a really strategic proposition not just the here and now but part of the the real opportunity is to help them get out of the penny a share game and make some of these investments that had been deferred right I want to get to the moment where Calvin you come into the company you do have it a series of of CEOs so leadership becomes something at the at the top level but you also have to deal with in in terms of the the various issues you have to address firstly we had a situation where the board really was interested loves this company and wanted to see it succeed and so in that regard when we came back in twenty fourteen we were able to create some of that alignment pretty easily and help create the the ability to put some of these ideas and placed the idea of a longer term plan but you're right I think some of those challenges with the founder made it hard and so the point that that the founder exited the company in two thousand fifteen we were really able to began assembling a world class management team and so with a CFO who was initially was Stuart now CO and then talent along the way leading to people like Glenn and Calvin and sun and a host of really world class business leaders and the exciting part is that this business had that potential it just needed the opportunity and the the framework from this point and beyond it really feels like the business is just getting started at that moment where you where you do start to dig in callin me what's what's the opportunity he see to sort of take it to the next level so for me the first assessment was as an opportunity here to be even more than what the limit is not just for the north American international and I think the clear resounding answers absolutely I mean the vision we have today is to Connecticut many people to live the sweat life and we're gonna express that not just two incredible product that will keep developing because there's so much opportunity and white space for us to develop into but also through our strategy of events what we do with our grow initiatives and seeing what Calvin and the team have already done with the manifestation of this some of this next step vision in Chicago and with the membership and loyalty program you already you're beginning to see some of the seeds of thinking about what the broader vision might look like and so what does that look like going for because it does feel like we're at a very interesting moment in the world of retail we have a huge run way of growth not only is our women's business continuing to grow at double digit with a lot of growth opportunity being entering into new categories or we mention to and from to see that doesn't even really in our women's category exist in into our army guest experience with our digital platform in as good as we are there's a ton of opportunity to even more this is an emotional brand and our online continues to be more transactional and then finally you know expanding into markets we still have a lot of opportunity North America not to mention what's happening internationally and in Europe as well as in China we feel work early innings and everything we're trying to create and that's advent managing partner in chairman David must suffer and Calvin McDonald lululemon's CEO listen it's a remarkable tale candidly that had not been told before the stock obviously anybody's watching it has seen it rise right but the money behind it what it took to fix it that's a whole different story I think this is a great business school case study right of a company that was done so well had some problems and really came back and if you can look at it so many different levels well and it's a well known brand of one that totally really keep an eye on both for trend.

The full five point seven billion dollars wanted to build his border wall by declaring a national emergency at the southern border. Trump would be able to take funds. Appropriated by congress for other areas, and redirect them to build the border wall. Most of those funds would come from the military Senate Democrats are solidly against that. And now, it appears enough Republicans agree with them to block their own president at least four Republicans were needed to change sides and four is exactly what they have Senator. Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Thom Tillis and rand Paul. They say their opposition to the president's action has nothing to do with Trump's border wall. Instead, they say it's about the constitution. Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer. Couldn't agree more. Congress has the power the purse congresses at check on the executive the Republicans who plan to break ranks and oppose the president say they cannot stand idly by while he used serves the role of congress and ignores the constitution Senator Schumer agrees on the constitutional argument will fundamentally alter the balance of power in this country in a way the found. Fathers would be aghast at beyond. The constitutional question Schumer says the president's declaration of a national emergency itself is pure folly. There is no actual emergency at the border, the president himself made that clear Trump. He says is making political calculation. It's a political bone a face-saving device to the president to throw to the right wing to show. He's still fighting, but congress finding to and while it may win this particular battle it may be short-lived victory. President Trump promises to veto the resolution of disapproval sending the matter back to congress for veto override vote since the threshold for veto override is much higher than a simple majority. It's unlikely congress will prevail in that battle..

Correspondent Linda Kenyon has the story today. The Senate will vote on amendments which Senate leaders claim could end the federal government shutdown. It's time to make a deal Senate majority. Leader Mitch McConnell says that deal will be voted on first. But Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer says it's no deal at all. I vote on the president's plan includes radical changes to our asylum system and full funding the full funding, the president asked for the border wall in exchange for reopening. The government Senator McConnell says it's the only option that can open the federal government right away normal operations would resume federal workers would receive back pay and continue to be paid. If that measure fails to get the sixty votes needed to pass than the Senate will vote on the second measure, it does not demand anything before we reopen the government. It's simply reopened the government for three weeks in allows us to continue debating border security. But this Bill also requires sixty votes to pass and like the first Bill it's highly likely to fall short. If it does pass President Trump has warned he will veto it. So the Senate would need even more than the sixty votes in order to overcome that threaten presidential veto either way it will be hard to achieve those. Numbers. "Correspondent Linda Kenyon has our top story. It was a difficult confirmation process from start to finish some say it was downright ugly. It's been a low point in the Senate. I have a different view about who calls. The low point Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell on Fox News Sunday also on Fox News Sunday Republican Lindsey Graham said he was just playing angry. I'm never been more pissed in my life voted for soda Marin. Keagan our never done this to them. But Ohio governor John Kasich tells CNN state of the union both sides handle things badly, the pox on both houses for the way. This was conducted and people in the country are appalled. That's because it's like I got win. And you gotta lose. So so that is not look sometimes you can have a short term win, and the long term you have to wonder about the soul of our country. So now, they're bred Kavanagh has been sworn in is ready to get to work. What happens next Delaware democrat. Chris coons was asked on NBC's meet the press if he's looking at impeachment of Brad Kavanagh, there's only ever been one Justice that's been impeached. And I think talking about it at this point isn't necessarily healing us in moving forward. Maryland, democrat, Ben Cardin, tells Fox News Sunday the debate over. Now Justice Cavanaugh is going to continue across the country all the way to the election, which is now just weeks away. I think it's going to boil down to our concerns about whether we're going to protect the games we've made in healthcare on preexisting conditions, where we're concerned about the mall investigation being interfered with I think, yes, constitutional right to women for those issues are going to be on the ballot a midterm and judge Cavanaugh underscores those issues democrat as a Hirono on ABC's this week agrees. The people can go to the polls and effect change all these angry people out there. They know that it is the people who are sitting in the Senate that they've elected who are making these decisions, and they're going to go to the polls, and they're gonna vote, but Republican Lindsey Graham tells Fox News Sunday, he's been inspired to take on the Democrats who oppose bread Kavanagh's confirmation. I've never campaigned against a colleague in my life. That's about to change. If the process is broken majority leader Mitch McConnell insists the Senate is not right of our big fight over this nomination over taxes last year. There's been an awful lot of bipartisan cooperation Liu pass to overwhelmingly about. By overwhelming margins to Bill just last week in the middle of the a dispute that was part of an interview on CBS is face the nation. Brad Kavanagh is now the ninth Justice on the current supreme court after a wrenching debate over sexual misconduct allegations and questions of judicial temperament and partisanship that captivated the nation. Now, the nation will watch how the court rules with cavenaugh on it on some of the latest biggest cases of our time. Just this week alone.
