"Dimension a dimension that's closer to entertainments so first of all like we did it in a way where we said if we're GONNA do this. Let's let's make fun. Let's let's do really write ups that we think are are surprising. And don't just feel like your advertising and let's go out and really try to get deals from cool unusual businesses where we can use this discounts as a catalyst to get people to go out in the world and haven't experienced that they wouldn't have otherwise had that makes their life richer somehow so that's really how it was in the early days. It was like we felt good about the impact. We are having both for these businesses that love the service and and the customers that were that were using croutons that also loved it and and and the combination of that with just the thrill of being part of something. That's growing like crazy. And all of your friends or are using it was was really satisfying. Yeah let me speaking of making things that are advertising. Seem like more fun Have you ever? You've probably hired a lot of people in your life. How many people do you think you have given jobs to or groupon I think had you know? Thirteen Fourteen fifteen thousand people. That's at some point loud and then we've got another twenty or so here and this isn't twenty is hiring difficult. Is it hard to find the best talent? They don't have a job and it's the ones who do have jobs if you WANNA hire but you can't find them because why because they have a job to job and because they've job what they're not looking for job they're not looking for a job right right so that's what I was going to point out. Yeah I mean and and by the way if if if I told you that there was a job site that was built on top of the world's largest professional network like wouldn't you wanna use that job site. But the one thing that never came out with Ron Rivera's. You know this guy is a pain in my ass. That's not really how he felt right now. They tried to be smarter about the way they ran him to try to change their offense to protect them a little more football things, but when you think culture like today, overvalue culture, Teddy Bridgewater, sixty million dollars, tastes good backup. Great Kid if he's you're starting quarterback. For Sixteen Games for three straight years. You're no-man's-land and I mean no-man's-land. So is right off the bat. Is Matt, rule valuing character and people that he knows more than just talent. Talent when I say you can sign talented players that you don't know coaches. Do it all over the league all the time. Like cow Shanahan didn't know deformed for him. Their starting defense event like to be a good coach in this league. You have to be somewhat uncomfortable being around guys that you don't know that much about. Obviously you've done research. You have reports on them coming out of college, but in free agency like I, don't really get it and I don't think there really is a plan because now I think. Think, they're probably thinking. Maybe we can be Kinda. Good well. You're not going to be kind of good because the saints are really good. Tampa is going to be better than you, and even the Falcons now they pulled the coaches names out of a hat and start playing well at the end of the season or just better than you to. You're going to be the worst team in that division. So if you're going to be the worst team in that division, you might as well just be really shitty and be in position to draft one of these top two quarterbacks in not in a way where you're actively trying to tank right now, but it makes no I can't wrap my head around giving sixty million I. Gould I never saw the official guaranteed number, but it doesn't matter. They're paying Teddy Bridgewater twenty million dollars a year at least tied to this season, and you might as well. If you were going to get rid of camp, I would've just rolled Kyle Allen and signed case keenum. Teddy I just I. Don't get it and I think sometimes. Chip Kelly these high level guys. They get into this level that they're not used to. They're not comfortable with, and they can be overwhelmed and they can do stupid things, and they can put themselves. They can actually take a step back before they ever take a step forward. And sometimes if you take several steps back, you're never able to make up for it. You know as I I mean this is one thing that I've heard but As therapist and as as a psychologist you have a responsibility to for example someone knee hurt themselves hurt others? You have to report it. There's this confidentiality but there's there's a confidentiality but then there's this undertone of moral compass a bit. And how do you how you take the information? That you're like this rapidly adapting information about social distancing and use it in your session as a public health professional. You know I think One of the things that happened on our listeners is that people started getting it that everyone has to stay home in waves right so I mean there's theory quickly over a period of relatively short number of days but over time we started to realize that we had a moral responsibility. I realize I have a moral responsibility to stay home. There was some people who are kind of berating. It and going to the office right because we believe so much in human to human contact right. I think people were saying I have to meet my patients and I have to meet them in the office. I felt really quickly like first of all. I am just over that age where you're supposed to be especially careful so it's not a good idea for me to go out. It's grandiose for me to think I'm impervious I'm not right. It is not good for my patients. I mean I I kinda got the VIBE. At some point that a few of them would be worried about me if I were out in the same way that they would worry about their mother right. Because everybody's telling their mother to stay home including me over and over again and and the last thing is that. I realized that ME GOING TO MY OFFICE. Right meant me encouraging other people to or giving them an opening to travel in ways that. I didn't think they should be traveling. My clientele does not right around in limousines. And if I'm in the office they're probably coming.

"He base in Italy. Yes and at that point This this was probably a week ago and he was very overwhelmed so for me. I think I became a very anxious at that point thing. We have to move and we have to move fast. What's it been like for you? Do you see yourself doing different things when you go into when go into work. Wash your hands more. Are you wearing though mask more often? Well yes especially when? I'm working in the Kobe clinic the way that it works there. If we were to mass we were in ninety. Five math where they shield over that. And then we're wearing a gallon. Two sets of gloves share about it and Covers RC and so what the in ninety five mask is not to be taken on and off so the in ninety five and we go home. We take our downs off and rewrote for every room. So called doffing in downing so we take everything and put it back on every patient fokkers. Imagine doing this about thirty times a day. In the meantime everything you do every step you have to wash your hands so I walk in the room with gloves on. I introduced myself to the patient. I do not shake their hands. I have some paperwork in my hand. I put it down. I take the gloves off. I wash my hands. I put gloves on again then. I of course have an exchange with the patient. I mean listen to them to a nasal swab in a all sauce on them like that. Take clothes off. Wash my hands so every step of the way of everything you do your washing your hands and you're putting back on gloves again and then you pick up. The gown with the patient has left the room. I knock on the door. Actually we have an escort with the mask that trust also in high level Protective equipment who escort the patient with the patient has the mask on the provider that escort in the patient has all of their potato gear on and they escort the patient out the door. There's a lot of costume changes and listening things. Yes so we're constantly washing our hands throughout the entire process but the in ninety five math we do not take off. There's a shortage of that. So we literally keep that ask on and you only take that off lunchtime when we eat and have of course we drink quarter hydrate get another math and we put that mask on for another however many hours so take yesterday for example. I started I saw my first patient at eight. Am they got ate lunch at once? Oh math going from eight to one. Took the mask off like year off of course after that patient to the bathroom during quarter you eat pretty quickly finish charting. All patients start over again. Put a new mask on at when thirty and I sell patient until seven thirty last night. I believe and that's that's our routine all day so I'm working with a team of it was only the three of us yesterday. Everybody chips in. We were really really hard. We actually have the President. O- one of our divisions there who acted as our technician for the day. She ran errands for up. She escorted patients in places out. She check stations in every. It was a complete team effort to make sure every patient was seen. Looks like Is it set up in a parking lot? Is it a tense or have you turned a part of emergency room into a testing center? No it's actually In another site offside about two miles down the street from them urgency department. We took A building that was not being used as often. But it was actually you sometimes. It's a older clinic that we have in our health care setting it has sixteen groom Ah Death the check in area so it. It looks like you're the clinic that you would go to visit your primary care doctor or any other physician. Only difference is a lot of fine. It's The courtesy of the door. And you're handed a mask upon approaching and have you been able to get tests easily and get the testing results easily. No we have not. It's not been very easy at all. we're we're very concerned about running out. We're in touch with the state very regularly or in touch with labcorp with cliff. We're doing everything we can to to get tests from different places wherever we've pulled all the tests that we have. I don't know the active now so no. It's not easy ongoing conversation. And that's our biggest fear is what happens when we run out and waiting for more and results right. Now vary depending on where. Who's doing the tests Our local state level if they do the test in batches daily they can only test so many people today so it getting test results is is not easy at all When the test is run we have to check with the state and I you know. Have you read this test? We sent you yet. They'll tell us yes or no. They'll tell us when the data so no matter how efficient we are with still at someone else's mercy were working on developing an in house testing and hopefully we'll have that other running we've been told within a week or so that will help quite a bit and as it just swab test. Look like the test is actually. It's very similar to Flu Tests of one. That we're doing. It's a naval swap uncomfortable The goal in one of you nares and we use this alone For better of like of describing it alone medical cue tips and We go up and get a nice sample troll it around a little bit Wait a couple of seconds and we pull out and then we do oral swab also which is sort of like getting a strap tests go all the way back in the throat so we make you gag a little bit baffling come out. Yeah somewhat uncomfortable. I've made a few people cry in an effort to make sure. We're getting a really good sample. It's okay no no one can playing. They know it with love whether it's in the home the community and within the frontlines of our public health care system so much of this burden and this education and even how you describe adding a little bit of levity falls on the shoulders of women have I think processed that. Yeah how do you? How do you pull at that? I think about it a little bit in the sense that we're nurturers nature.

American Airlines Delays Boeing 737 MAX Once Again
"March. A seven thirty seven Max crashed in Ethiopia killing one hundred fifty seven people and shocking the world Regulators started grounding the plane and within days. The Max was completely out of the air. Boeing began working with authorities to figure out what happened and airlines also had to reckon with the fallout American airline CEO. Doug Parker said the company was ready to work closely with Boeing to get the planes back in the air. Your is your tragic events And what we care about is safety and we will work together as this industry always does to ensure that safety. He's number one focus. But at the same time American Airlines and other carriers needed to figure out how to cope with grounding of the Max while still operating their businesses Mrs it was really something of a scramble for them to figure out what to do. Reporter Alley cider covers the aviation industry industry. They looked at what would be the least disruptive way to cut flights the Max mostly flew between the New York area and Miami. You you know that's where most of the Max's were being used. Obviously Kansas stop flying between the Florida so they had to kind of spread it out and look at their network and look okay. We're flights that we we have multiple frequencies a day where we could cut one. So we're not just ending travel between two cities trimming a couple of frequencies looked at long haul flights where you can cancel one long haul flight instead of a bunch of short flights where you've suddenly inconvenienced a lot of people. At the time of the grounding. You had people who were already scheduled to travel in. Their plans. Had to be sort of offended at the last minute you know. We talked to passengers who were sort of already on vacation. And then they get a call from their airline airline that says actually your flight home has been cancelled. Then we've re booked you and maybe on a flight that's not on the day. He wanted to travel or has a stopover when he wanted to direct act. Can you tell me what all of this flight rescheduling looked like so most of the stuff they do software. A lot of it is automated. And they're still using using that software you know they're not just like using crayons and colored pencils on a big map of the US or the world but there is a lot of thoughts and analysis and expertise expertise that has to go into figuring out. What's the best way or the least inconvenient way to basically redraw so I spoke to Vasu Raja? He works the network planning at American Airlines. And from what you told me there is a lot of late nights like imagining correctly. Like people at the office office really laid and lots of empty pizza boxes and he said yeah pretty much and all. This scrambling wasn't just causing headaches and late nights for the planning team. Once they make a decision about their network is sort of ripples throughout the company there's people on Revenue Management hoped to decide what the availability should be in making sure to keep some mhm seats open so anyone. Who's Max flight got canceled? You know has the place to go. You know they tell everyone. Don't worry you'll get an email if your schedule has been changed but if you're worried about your vacation you're definitely going to call so they have to staff up on customer service and make sure there are people there to answer those calls and explain the situation so it really is this huge logistical challenge talents. That kind of ripples throughout the airline at the time I think there was a sense that could be pretty temporary but that delay would not be temporary as the Federal Aviation Administration investigated. Boeing's Max Fleet. They uncovered more and more safety concerns. I think what initially seem to some some people like it would be a pretty straightforward fixed. That could be done. Relatively quickly started to just take longer and longer as new issues were discovered and just amid a heightened scrutiny by the FAA but also regulators all over the world. You know bullying was saying it was going to provide all this information to regulators to take a look at and that kind of kept getting pushed back again and again and you know the process just kind of kept getting delayed over and over again regulators flagged problems with pilot training emergency safety st procedures and some of the planes software and as the safety inquiry stretched. On for months Boeing's estimate on the Max would return to service kept moving back I Boeing pushed it into the summer of twenty nineteen and then bowing pushed back again until the end of the year. With each month that the Max's return was delayed. American Airlines had to go into scramble mode all over again canceling more flights. They're kind of just on the receiving and here you know all they can do is wait for Boeing and the FAA to work out the process. And there's really not a lot they can do to speed things along and airlines have to make decisions decisions about the Max you know way before they really having clarity about what's going on with the Max. They have to decide over two months like seventy days before her their schedule. That's when they really have to finalize things so they can get their flight attendants in their pilots scheduled beyond that point just gets harder and harder to make changes. So you know. They've had to kind of looking to the future and think. How likely is it that the Max is going to be back? And allie says the ongoing wing uncertainty put Americans growth plans on hold. It wasn't flying the twenty four Max planes. It had and it wouldn't be getting the sixteen more it had ordered for the rest of the year. American patients with Boeing was wearing thin. The airlines have gotten pretty frustrated with the number of delays that they've seen You know I don't want to suggest that they want to rush the process along but I think you know they're just unhappy with the way. Expectations have been managed. And just how long this has gone on. Those mismanaged edged expectations were costing American and it wanted bowing to pay. That's after the break in this episode of the Journal is brought to you by Lincoln jobs. Delays in the safety assessment of the seven thirty seven MACs were piling up and American Airlines was juggling the fallout its pilots were upset because they we're losing money and peak. Holiday travel was on the horizon in an October investor. Call American CEO. Doug Parker expressed his aggravation with Boeing. They believe the F. B. certified in or quarter. It's probably best. It's that information is best case given what we've all seen. Ah over the over the course of this process so we're prostrate bullying American have been in touch throughout the year. You know American American and other airlines have made it clear that they don't believe they should be on the hook financially for this That they're expecting bowing to make them whole James extended grounding her customers or members enter. Cheryl's we're working to ensure that Boeing shareholders bear the cost of Boeing's failures not American Airlines American Airlines basically said they believed the grounding would result in a five hundred and forty million dollar reduction their full year or twenty nineteen and profits. So that's pretty significant and it's like a big step up from what they thought originally like in the first effort their first quarter earnings. They were predicting a three hundred. Fifty million dollar impact so it's been much more expensive than they were anticipating on. That call Parker said that American was in talks with Boeing about compensating. The airline for about five hundred forty million dollar hit and last week. American said it reached a settlement with Boeing for an undisclosed amount but that deal just applies applies to two thousand nineteen and the Max grounding is still ongoing meaning American Airlines is facing more costs twenty twenty. Where does this leave? American Airlines going into twenty twenty so going into two thousand twenty American Airlines has said that getting the Max flying again. It's sort of one of the biggest I think it needs to do to get on track. American is currently planning for the Max to return by June more than a year after the initial grounding but even even if the Max is clear to fly all the headaches and additional costs for American will be far from over for one thing. It'll take weeks of maintenance to get the planes ready to fly I again after they sat on the ground for more than a year. And then there's the issue of flight simulator training. I think the biggest thing in terms of time and money is that recently. It's starting to become more and more likely it sounds stats pilots. Who need to go through some kind of training before? They're allowed to fly the Mexican. Why would it pose such a high cost for American Airlines pilots would need to go through this training so first of all it was unexpected? It's not really budgeted time time for a simulator. It's just in one place so all the pilots have to come from wherever they're based all around the country and spend time in it. Can you describe bribe. What a flight simulator is like? What does it look like? They kind of look like Like in Star Wars those like like robots on skinny long legs that kind of what are they called At yeah that's sort of what they look like. Yeah Yeah I just googled it to me. That's what they look like. I'M GONNA get a lot of trouble with like a lot of people who are really knowledgeable trouble about aviation. Who aren't going to be like? No that's not what they look like so like a full motion flight simulator. They're sophisticated piece of equipment and they're very expensive and the process of getting everyone to wear the simulator is and scheduling them all for time in the simulator. You know it's just a big another logistical challenge. You know after a year. That's been full of challenges. Do you have a sense. That American Airlines is okay with some of this this delay because it's so much needs the restoration of customer confidence. I do think that safety is the highest priority for the airlines. Sort sort of making sure that everyone is confident in the plane is their top priority so they are planning to do a lot you know. There will likely be a period between when regulators liters allowed the plane to fly again and when it enters commercial service. And they're planning to sort of do as much as they can to put

"Seth Jason thanks for being here. I'm in my full don't run me over callers with my greasy sweaty guy who biked in a look. So for those of you who can't see me look for the video, that's, that's almost ever this is. Yeah. This is when the people are like, no we're happy that it's an audio podcast, we're thrilled. We don't need. We don't need to see you in the bright, orange biking shirt. I don't even have a handsome voice. Nice speaking voice. Let's move along. We've got we've got a bunch of news. And we're going to we're going to preview some earnings that are coming after the closing bell. Let's start with Dave, and Buster's, though, because first quarter profits came in lower than expected. And that's actually the first time in five years, that's happened for them. Shares of Dave and Buster's are down more than twenty percent this morning. I know they lowered guidance how much did they lower it? I mean they didn't they didn't miss by something. It wasn't a whole much that full year guidance to and they missed by a penny or something. But people are freaking out. I think once you've set up the expectation that you're going to do better than than people. Expect all the time than the minute, you don't all heck breaks loose. Hey, I on a stock that's done fifty percent or something. And he's a very clever tech company. So if you really want to know how to lose money come to me twenty twenty some percent and a day or a week, nothing but Dave and Buster's to me is one of those businesses seems odd to me that sort of still exists because you've. You've so much restaurant competition. And then you on game and food. I mean how is everybody not at home? Getting door dash food delivered while they play eight packs legends on their on their XBox. Can I answer that because you don't always want sixty your friends coming over to do that? You sometimes you just want to get out of the house. I suppose a comp comp suggests that the a slightly slightly negative flat. People aren't all add excited at least the last quarter, or so they've been getting a little growth over the years by opening new locations. The margins I was like, in the margin been kind of creeping downward for several years now. So this is not my idea of a super awesome, opportunity that free cash flow isn't really there. So unfortunately, you know, sitting there at a price earnings ratio of seventeen sounds like a bargain today. But I think it might need to be more of a bargain before it's a before it's a real deal. Glad you mentioned the cops because that was one of the things that leaped out at me when I was looking at this quarter was that they're, they're comps really. Aren't that great? The new locations. And by definition for those who are new to this podcast or new investing. When we talk about comps, same store sales by definition. Those are locations that have been open for at least a year, the new location. I mean, this, this is one of those things that is maybe not a red flag. But maybe it's a pink flag. Not just for Dave and Buster's. But for any, whether it's a grocery store, just a basic retail operation, or in this case, Dave and busters where it is a little bit of a pink flag where you go wait. So the new locations, there's the initial excitement. Dave and Buster's has opened up in your town or your city or whatever it's like, oh, let's go there. But if they can't sustain those people, and I'm wondering how much of the gross margins creeping down has to do with an increased marketing spent because it does seem like they are doing a lot of promotional stuff. Yeah. While the margin I mean, all the margins are on the way down. So I mean their food prices were going up for a while. And then we had labour and other costs going up. So, but a lot of restaurants are experienced. It's just plain old competition. You have to match prices or in, in some way or another, to bring people in the door. One of I guess, one of the challenges, I would guess, exists for Dave and Buster's is hey, it's a it's super small location without much stuff in it, right. No, it's, it's not it's a place where you play stuff. So it's not like cranking out another one of those poll as with the wrought iron furniture made out of black pipe from from the, the plumbing store. It probably costs, a little more money to build these locations, if they're not paying back so quickly. Your financial start to their other way. So I think on the plus side over the next couple of years, Dave and Buster's to the extent that they're looking open up new locations. We'll probably have more options as commercial real estate continues to face some challenges on the flip side, whenever the conversation turns to well, we think of recession is coming next year or two. You know, when I think about stocks that are recession proof, Dave and Buster's. It's at the other end of the spectrum, this is this is a business. That's done. Well for a bunch of years, but it seems like one of the ultimate discretionary income stocks. Yeah. I guess we'll find out someday. I'll predicting recessions has been a bad business. Yes. In a while. So the fact that the stock is at a two and a half year low, you're not looking at this ain't no. Yeah. By on this dip now. Yeah, I got I got a long history with with value, finger, quotes value stocks like this, that continue becoming more, and more of a value, but less and less of a value, if you know what I mean. Tesla had its annual shareholder meeting on Tuesday. Shares were up briefly this morning in part because Alon musk made comments at the meetings at the meeting. He said he say anything positive. Well, I can hardly imagine, you know what? Let's, let's be clear if he's not any CEO, who's not saying positive things that their shareholder meeting is doing a bad job of being the c. So I don't knock him for that. He said, among other things, it won't be long before we have a four hundred mile range car talked about in twenty twenty Tessa drivers will be able to use self driving features without intervention. I it seems like you just look at the stock chart today, there was some initial enthusiasm stock. Doc was briefly it's now down a couple of percents of problem. If you if you say things that don't turn out to be true often enough, sometimes people stopped believing you it was more than two years ago that Elon Musk promised us that you'd be able to sleep in your tesla while at drove across the country. And everyone believed it then, and then, you know that never happened, and then he kinda dials things back and then a couple of months ago, he doubt things if he said, four sure there will be a million robo tesla robo taxes on the road, you'd be stupid, not to buy any other car, which is just laughable. I mean, consumer reports a couple of weeks later rated autopilot, as dangerous and more difficult to drive with than just driving yourself because it was so erotic. And now we have a couple of months after that autonomy day, which to me, seemed like a smokescreen designed entirely to try to shift, the sentiment of the, the company away from financials and towards, you know, hey, we're going to become an Uber competitor and now. Now, a sort of walking things back and saying self driving without user intervention. But also at the same time supervised robo taxi, which, by the way like Waymo is doing that right now in that exists in other forms? And he just makes these promises that don't match up that don't line up with the reality of what other self driving car leaders are saying and what they're doing. This is a really difficult task and it's not just a matter of getting a couple hundred thousand or a couple of million more miles. There's real diminishing returns for machine learning for doing this, and they have not cracked, this not yet in Tesla's doing it with more. Limited hardware than other companies is nobody else trying to do it their way, which tesla true believers would say, well, that just shows a genius. Mosque is I tend to think that if he's the only one doing it this way, and all these other really smart people are seeing you probably can't do it that way that he's probably the one who has it wrong. So very interesting shareholder meeting. There were some other comments that stood out. To me, Tesla's shareholders are obsessed with the idea that there of being victims. They love this idea that they're victims of a media conspiracy, which is hilarious because they are the, the beneficiaries of so much media incredulity for years. I mean nobody nobody looked at mosque and said, can you really do all those things until recently, now, of course they don't like it. I one of the remarks of something about, you know, it's crazy. The media talks about you is if you're about to go bankrupt, and he says, you know, of course, we're not that's just insane. Except not too long ago, everyone thought they would need to do that. They were running on a cash and must claim they weren't. And then after they had a quarter or they got some free cash flow. He came out and said, yeah, we were only a couple of weeks away from running out of cash. So they wanna have it both ways. It's really nutty. And to me, it's the kind of stock where I wouldn't take a real position in it either way. Because on the one hand you have a CEO who's very comfortable saying things that are not true. And you have a lot of other executives leaving the company probably related to that on the other hand, you have this rabid shareholder fan base. That makes the stock whip Cy it's completely detached from fundamentals. It's all about this crazy personality, not for me. You just reminded me of. The Alex give new documentary that was on HBO and for for those who haven't seen it. It's a it's a fabulous bit of documentary filmmaking about theranos, and Elizabeth homes. And one of the things that. Was noteworthy to me in that was the opening of the documentary. That was a decent bit of information about Thomas, Edison, and sort of, you know, sort of tracing the line of the Silicon Valley, fake to you make it mentality back to Thomas Edison, and saying, you know, Edison did a fair amount of that. Like, there's, you know and, and, and that's, that's a tried and true practice that, you know, didn't didn't start with Elizabeth homes. It didn't start with the Elon Musk. And you know that, that kind of thing goes on all that being said they report earnings second quarter report is scheduled to come at the end of July. It really seems like on the times when tesla has come out with, like a legitimately, encouraging slash great earnings report. A lot of that other stuff just disappear. So and by the way, I'm like you, I don't own shares. I would never know millionaire short stock. I'm on the sidelines just watching all of this play out Noddy and. I just sort of think, to myself. Well, you know, no one ever gotten trouble for walking up to bat and hitting home run. And if they don't, if they come out at the end of July and have some blog quarter, and that, then that helps. Well, of course you have to do it. Yeah, but, you know, the miracle quarter was it was to a large degree, and it wasn't really spoken about at the time. The cash flow quarter was was a artifact of really massaging working capital and calling in some favors. And so you wonder can actually keep doing that. They raised money following the miracle quarter because they needed it. So the suggests that they couldn't keep doing that. It's not easy to build cars. It's not easy to build cars, and you also tell everyone you're going to build self driving electric trucks and all of this other stuff. So maybe they pull it off. I really hope the industry goes, but they have a lot more competition, coming from all the other manufacturers, and those manufacturers are not stupid. If you're looking at a higher for your small business naturally want to find the best person for the job. And he gets up puts on his clothes and drives to his job as a multimedia, journalism, professor at Oklahoma state university. He loves his work, and he's students love him. Once the day is over and the sun sets on the city of Stillwater he transforms into a character known as profit Hof a game playing Oreo reviewing dad joke cracking youtuber with over twelve million views much like Peter Parker, a plethora of other superhero alter egos that came before him, Shane has an origin story with pretty humble beginnings back in two thousand seventeen he found himself at one of the lowest points in his life. He just broken off an engagement and was fighting an uphill battle against oppression. He felt like he'd spent all his time and energy on the wrong things. So he wanted to focus on something he enjoyed and he wanted to help people most of his free time was spent playing strategy based video game called marvel contest of champions in the game players, assume the identity of marvel superhero, and go to battle against other people. The world over. He was pretty good at it one day he was chatting with his twin brother who suggested that he tried turning his gaming into a YouTube channel. It would give him something creative to focus on. And bring him closer to a wider community Shane had spent the past few years, reviewing Oreos and pizza on his channel without much success. So he figured why not try and mix it up after that encounter. He went home to play the game recorded a video of what he was doing and then posted on his gentle. He didn't expect much, but to his surprise that video gathered more of us in a couple of hours than any of his Oriole videos had in the past three years, seeing the Beuys and comments gave Shane a rush, she hadn't felt in years, people actually wanted to watch him play, and they also cared about what he had to say still surprised Shane decided he would run an experiment. He would make video every single day posted on his channel and review. The results invested around two thousand dollars into this venture. He bought a new desktop computer a laptop and a gaming microphone to improve the quality of his videos. He also picked up a few tools like final cut pro Shane likens, the videos he makes to watching someone play the slot machines. There's a lot of luck strategy in anticipation built into. The contest of champions game. Each video shows players, what chain is doing and how they can improve their own experience in the game. But it also documents the surprise characters upgrades, and bonuses. He receives because these elements come from endgame crystals. It's like a marvel lovers version of on boxing, the more videos, Shane uploaded, the more his channel started to grow. He's done little in the way of marketing outside of starting at Twitter feet. Instead, he relies on YouTube to recommend videos to people who are interested in similar topics. He optimizes for this by using relevant keywords in his video descriptions, as well as in touching headlines in video thumbnails to increase clicks. This simple approach has enabled Shane's profit off channel to grow from one hundred to thirty two thousand subscribers in just two years. He's been able to reach people and over one hundred countries many of which get involved in discussions on his channel. He invest between twenty and thirty hours a week into the project which is split between playing at a seeing and interacting with the audience. He says, one of the biggest contributors to the growth of his channel is how much time he spends talking to subscribers he prides himself, and how active he is in the comments how he answers, all their questions and takes time to hang out whenever he can. But let's be clear. Shane's YouTube channel isn't just a passion pursuit. He's also generating a healthy income because his content is safer work. He really has issues with videos being demonetized a common problem that some other YouTubers have experienced Shane also receives donations from fans who enjoy the videos. He makes so how much money are we talking about, well, this year, he's on track to earn thirty six thousand dollars from his side, hustle, which is almost the same as his teaching income. And if. Keeps growing at this rate, it won't be long until he surpasses it. He says the only downside to running his channel as many other superheroes have come to realize is that the YouTube comments section can be cynical unfriendly place. He's had to grow a thick skin to deal with it. However, none of it compares to the love and community. He has found the channel Shane has had the pleasure of being invited to Vince Vince all over the US including the wedding of a couple who watches him every day. He wants to keep growing the platform and share a positive message to all the people who follow his work. Well,

We get the minutes of the most recent fed meeting tomorrow, and it's always good to get more context on what share pal and the gang or thinking, but sharing those minutes or doing press conferences, or interviews and making speeches like the ones Bruce was talking about the top programme are just some of the ways the Federal Reserve communicates what it does. And why in fact, there's a whole department inside the central Bank that is committed to educating the public in other ways, including Federal Reserve comic books. My name is Jen con. My name's Nico Pratt. I'm the associate director in outreach and education. And I am the head of education programs at the Federal Reserve of New York. So the New York fed is actually been producing comic books for almost seventy years in that time we've published over two dozen titles, and each of those titles, focuses on different teams of barter banking currency. There's even a story of checks in there and over time they really progressed to include more information. Both Jen and I are on a creative project team within the economic education area. And we decided recently to relaunch the series with a modern spin. They relaunch comic book series includes three books once upon a dime, which focuses on barter currency and the development of banking the story of the Federal Reserve includes information on the structure and responsibilities of the Federal Reserve system and most recently, an intro to monetary policy. The two main characters are flora, and Glick, and they are from planet Novus. No, they've started an ice cream store, experienced the ups and downs. But also travel around and learn and teach about how to keep Connie's and financial systems stable around the galaxy since we launched the comic books about three years ago, we've had a lot of great reaction. We actually had somebody, send in video of their children, reading the comic book, and it was two little boys. And they were kind of squished together on the couch looking through the comic book, the older, one was reading the words to the younger one, because they don't think he could quite read yet, but it was kind of cute to see them. Figuring it out and understanding the forces around them. I mean, this is definitely one of the more fun projects that we get to work on. It's a motley crew of communists, and educators, and illustrators and printers, and it's just so many different types of people from so many different types of backgrounds, and it's a really kind of fun time where we get together. There and laugh and kind of learn new things our selves.

Today's indicator is to that is how many miles it is from one side of forty second street to the other so across Manhattan, the horizontally, so this is deep midtown. The beating heart of overcrowded New York, forty second street goes by Grand Central station time square port authority bus terminal. It is one of the most heavily traffic streets in the. Yeah. This two miles roughly twelve blocks is a treacherous stretch. So treacherous as Dr I discovered some calves will not even drive it. It's a nonstarter for some cabs. But we finally did find a heroic cabdriver who would take us Muhammed Sharif. He's been driving taxi in Manhattan for about six months. Now, what is it like driving a New York? It's. Restarting time, we're gonna see how long it takes us to get cross town, and it is four thirty five pm definitely rush hour. So this congestion pricing plan was passed by the New York legislature. But it won't be put in place for a couple of years. We asked Muhammad if he'd heard about it. What do you think about that? I'm not sure you would say would lectured us at fake or that like to make more money. How much? Actually, it's both. According to Bruce Schaller, he's a public transportation consultant here in New York. Do you think it's a good idea for New York? Yes. Reduced congestion the city because charge people some people will decide to take the bus to come in and said driving, and the Secondly, it raises very badly needed revenue for public transportation. We've had what we call a subway crisis for the trains are overcrowded. There's a lot of work to be done. And we need the funding to do that a lot of funding. It's estimated that New York will need to spend tens of billions of dollars to fix the subway system and congestion pricing has proven itself to be a really fast effective way to raise money says Bruce places like Singapore, and Stockholm do it London rolled out congestion pricing. And they've seen speeds increased by thirty percent checking in were just passing Grand Central station. We have been in. Cam for six minutes, not bad. It's been a nice, right? Honestly, making pretty good time. There's still plenty of details that need to get ironed out. Not least of which is just how much is this toll going to cost New York. Governor Andrew Cuomo suggested a flat fee per car per day of about eleven or twelve bucks and twenty five dollars for trucks. But there will be some exemptions. The state has already approved breaks for emergency vehicles for people with disabilities and other groups are asking for exemptions. As well delivery truck drivers, livery cab drivers motorcyclists police officers, and that could really affect how much money the congestion pricing plan brings in and at least in Muhammad's view. If all these guys get exemptions. It's not gonna help traffic at all or raise much money. Right now, we're in a very familiar part of town right by the new York Public Library and Bryant park where the New York office of NPR's high indicate high NPR IMP are. Yeah. There's the shut the place the terrible music. Salad place. It has been fourteen minutes on the doc. Okay. Okay. In a we're making
