"Simplified lied so as I went to a thing I was invited to a thing and I and I went to thing. She's a film director was the film thing and I think I primarily went to because I thought she would enjoy it and I believe we did and I didn't know about the movie. Here's getting that this guy I know he's he's a fan of mine he's and he's also an artist in his own right in a lot of ways Peter Kann. He's in the ban negative land but he's also a film archivist lightest any invites me to a lot of things and he sends me records and stuff and I've not You know I've gone like sometimes in the bay area will be like go over to my basement and see a pristine print of Klute and I'll be like I don't know Peter I don't know I don't think I do but it's time thing but anyways he had. Ah a big part of an in the restoration of this film which I knew nothing about it. It's called Spring nights summer night. The director is J L Anderson. It's it's in this program over there at UCLA. Fill the film and Television Archive. Okay they got a program going over there. It's American neo realism now. Look I'm no dummy. I'm half an intellectual. I studied film in college but had been a long time since I went to an event went to see a film that was specifically in the context of not just archiving but you know a series of a certain type of film and also so like it was a film nerd event in a lot of ways. But it's also a film art thing it's It's it's sort of found piece of film in a way a found feature. It's your film that has been salvaged from obscurity. And it's been a long time since I've done that. You know when you're in college you do that Shit you gotta we gotTa see this movie. We know we're going to get a lecture on the movie and You appreciate it and that look. I've got the tools you know. I mean the film was sort of. The story was kind of stunning and dark. It takes place in rural Ohio Southeastern Ohio. It's almost a Falk Narian tale of Of A family. But it's like later. I mean I think it's from nine hundred sixty seven mm-hmm but it was beautiful and there was a life to live Talapity to it and this new print that Peter worked on it's a digital print and it's the first time I think the film has been shown in its entirety hired he. Maybe I don't know if it's ever but when it's gone through quite a history. Apparently it was released with some other footage added to make a little more sorted for the driving crowd crowd and this is the way that the director wanted. But I don't I don't do that kind of stuff and the guy who presented it to the people at the Ucla Film Archive you know. One Guy introduced the the other guy who had a long beard. This is a fourteen year project bringing this into the theater. Everyone's very excited WHO's there was a pretty packed house and you know it was sort would've stunning and I'd forgotten what it's like to just take that stuff in but like to go and see an event in here people speak on the the sort of revelation of the movie and the construction another movie in the archiving and and bringing back to life of the movie was sort of fascinating? The guy one of the guys had a remarkable beard. Just a great beard and this is their life. If man you know this is their life is like archiving movies you have pulling them out of obscurity or or or to decomposing and so they don't just disappear ear forever and I don't know I. I think there was a time where I and I've talked about this before when it comes to art and context and we're talking about you know the the the program is American neo realism. No matter what I know about movies or what I can talk about how I can talk about it. I'm no fucking deep film nerd. I'm no film academic. I'm no film fucking intellectual. I know what I know and I know enough to watch it properly. But there's always been this feeling that when anything is is sort creative revisited by academia or written about in a certain context or put under the umbrella of American neo realism at a certain point in history. I know Italian Neo your realism. I've seen Rome open city. I know I know things but like I automatically think that no matter whatever experience I have watching the film that it's like a missing something. What am I missing? And I think the breakthrough I had maybe last night or recently is that I didn't miss anything that you know you take it in. It's not there to solve solve all your problems. You can blow you away could change the configuration of your synapses but it could also just be like I get it and you know it was really amazing for these reasons and and I can appreciate that and I understand what the context is and why it's there and it definitely was something that changed the way I look at something I guess. Ah I've given myself a break and I think I'm going to see more stuff now in this sort of ties in with Lily Tomlin because I watched all of Nashville before I talk Orion seen that film in Awhile and forgotten how it ended and I'd seen it two or three times and that's a film from nineteen probably seventy five and Willie Tomlin his genius in it. She's like it's a straight up acting GIG and it's fucking unbelievable and the whole movie. Movie is sort of unbelievable. The CAST is insane. Ned Beatty Ronnie Blakely Keith. Carradine Geraldine Henry Gibson. Michael Murphy Lily. Tomlin Jeff Goldblum. has this weird part in it. That's pretty great. I believe Lily Tomlin was nominated for an Oscar for her work in in In in the in the film. And it's definitely a sort of a masterpiece of a sort as are many of altman's films one of my favorite movies McCabe and Mrs Miller and it's a whole different pace a whole different group. has its own context. Altman is his own world. They're definitely sort of art movies but sort of lyrical and and Well populated and well-financed movies Unlike the kind of independent nature of the film I saw last night made in nineteen sixty seven on a fairly early shoestring budget in black and white. That's the other thing you earn is relatively independent. Cinema has been around a long time. And there's a lot of gems out there but Nashville Asheville was great to watch it. It's a it's a weird dark movie as are many of the Altman films and Louis. Tom was also amazing in shortcuts. She was coupled with Tom Waits. It was one of the beautiful relationships that movie anyways from laughing from one person shows nine to five. I'm giving her a a big buildup as if she's going to walk in here. It was an honor to talk to this woman. I've been waiting to do it for a long time. So this is me talking to lily. Tomlin who who is On Grayson Frankie. which premiers on Netflix? This Wednesday January fifteenth. That is the the new season I talked to her. Co Star Jane Fonda. Maybe I'll get the other ones anyways me and Willie Right now.

"One of my favorite things ever is the movie night of five something that'll be it in a stumble and if you haven't seen it it's basically a slapstick bawdy comedy for Jane Fonda and lily Tomlin and of course Dolly Parton the office workers in the late seventies and they're dealing with this sexist heck of a box and the big iconic scene in this movie comes when one day lily Tomlin gets passed over for promotion it goes to just some guy after she's been all this time making the boss look good let him take credit for work and stuff if you can't take it anymore she starts going off on him okay how can leave and I'm gonna tell you one thing before I go don't you ever refer to me as your girl again what in god's name are you talking about but she's going on him Dolly Parton walks in and it comes out that the boss has been telling everybody that Dolly is his mistress mistress never mind she's Lipset Doorly just come off a for god sake the whole company knows you two were having an affair literally been chasing around the office and she's been politely dodging him but now she also and loads on it if you ever say another word about me I make another indecent proposal I'm going to get that done mine and I'm going to change you from my research and with one shot hi love this seat is so good but here's the thing I never really thought about the historical context for this movie and for this scene in particular and the fantasy world of motion pictures nineteen eighty turned out to be the year when real life theme spelled box office success perhaps the best example is a fell nine to five the picture dealing with the problems of working women but here's the thing this moment at the end of the seventies there is really just a before and after for the American workplace I mean women in jobs all around the economy we're just having the same sort of collective awakening that's depicted a nine to five.

"This weekend. It is comedy film festival. Studio is Brent. What's your last name? Because I know it's somewhere in this Email must Kato brand. How're you doing? Great. I'm so happy to have you here we decided to we just talked to Mike Mark Blanchard who is a director of of a world away. And there's there's just so much information about how many films are in this festival combined. I think we have eighty five different project. Yeah. That was my sensitive. That's great series in short videos. Eleven minutes to an hour and a half two our films right anything from maybe two minutes up until almost two hours. Yeah, we're we're super excited about great projects and up and coming new faces, and it's just a great experience for people to come out and see comedy film. How long do you have this admission of like how are you taking that enrollment? Or you know, when people can give they take a shot at being a part of it around nine months. Timeframe. That's there's just a couple of websites that are sort of aggregate that everybody just cements through. And yeah, we get lots of submissions. It's kind of a taboo thing to say how many submissions you get. That's like a film festival rural except the big ones can say they got ten thousand or whatever. But really Sundance gets. I think they got fourteen thousand. No, I'm just intrigued that it's it's a taboo to say that about submissions. I mean, yes, it's one of those things that I always say that are eighty-five projects is like around ten percent. Ten percent best that we are saying well, one of the films that will be at the child comedy film festival is funny. You never knew and on the line with us is Andrew hunt who is a director of this film, starring Fred Willard and Kevin Pollack. Hi, andrew. Thank you so much for joining us. How you doing? Good. How are you very well, tell us about the I I wanna know. Can you tell the remarkable remarkable TV comics that were rediscovering are? Or is it a is it something find out during the film? Imaging cocoa. His Virginia comb, Chicago and. About the right? Oh. I'm trying to think of what I know. And that's probably what you came across people like, wait a minute. What did I know? I know that name, but why don't I remember her? What was this a film like for you to to to take through all the footage and have interviews with people? Remarkable because you know, as you can probably tell from my accent originate from New Zealand and. In New York for the teen years. And he was it was incredible sort of the mice and coming to experience because you know, I didn't grow up with the impact. And and we get you'll sheriff says the New Zealand and. Survey where ridge and the film, but we had different and then blue, and I couldn't find to to use them in the film. And so I needed to replace them. We wanted to three comedian, and I came in two weeks of the pay attention, New York. What's number of shows? And there was just completely blown away by then the type in you could see that Kristen wake, you know, had. Some sort of in the line of comedy, influenced and lily Tomlin and to get to sit with people that loved you hot. He's in the film and lily Tomlin a moment there, Paul Ryan. And it was an incredible opportunity to the people who are still alive. We'll be at nineteen now, but it was his hands collaborators these three comedians. So the maybe what was it like working with with Kevin? What was what was the take the Kevin Pollack, and Fred Willard had going on this journey with you. They would to opposite which I was hoping would work. Well, and I think it does. Because of that said kidding very analytical. He wants to know why something funny, and it's almost obsessive about that you write a book last. I think it was able to kick me to the middle and which is. But Fred completely instinctive that was remarkable to even even Kevin was an or Fred. And. They they brought something completely different to it yet doesn't state their reaction to to company from of very political approach from Kevin. So I hit to change. How I directed. The result of that was just a completely different approach. Those fascinating. I I'm not familiar. I know Martha Raye a new imaging cocoa. But I'm not familiar with George Gobel is any anyway. Hold on one second guessing studio who wants to throw something at it wasn't wasn't George Golan the Hollywood squares forever. He was one of the guys. But he was also on. What's see, I don't know if he was on laughing or he's been around. He I'll tell you some people more might limit towards from what he was. He was on Sunday Times on Cussing and regularly. But yeah, Hollywood his. In the late eight years old three of them had been you had the number one nineteen fifty five I think it was. And so the division. Kyko with shows they won the twenty five year round in and not the raise. So again, you know, it was one of the talk show period. So. The special thing about the film is in those days. The comedy shows that what variety says they will look on live. They went record it. But the thing of the. NBC's hit off it. Then what they would do is. Did they create what's called the tennis got which is putting a sixteen millimeter film camera in front of the monitor? It's getting the feed, and they would record them, you know, to monitor so considered good enough quality to rebroadcast the wish showing stuff that topping saying grow sixty is the might lose his broadcast. And so there's there's lots of the, Tori. One of my favorite pieces in the films. We sat down with Michael fun Stein. You know, the guy behind the the American songbook and put on a career that he didn't know that imaging taika the. I don't wanna give much long thing that you see them genuinely surprised when we saw the piece that she did. So yeah, there's a lot of toy aspects to the film, and you say, well genuinely being surprised by these because you know, I called the film funny. You never knew obviously play on with. But it's like, yeah. But not decide other than from perhaps who's maybe they billion stuff. Well, and I will at the photo of George Gobel. I'm like, oh, yeah. I know that guy, but I didn't remember his name, and yeah, he's hysterical. They're all incredibly, funny and talented performers. And I'm so glad that you've made this film in a way that not only memorialize that gives us an an opportunity to appreciate their work. But as you mentioned share footage that we have most of us have never seen. That's terminated thirty. Yeah. We just we just had a screening last week. We just. One that this this feature documentary film, awarded the gun state, which is out east coast premiere. Thank you. But the thing that was more rewarding than the award was the sounds a little trite. But I really meant was that to up to film. Kinkel to highway through the phone. And you know, that was that was snorting employs. They dumping of it was a real experience a great job to wake up for. Yeah. Well, actually, taking the news to still made. It was really with that. It was hard to get the rights to find find the Scott. I you know people's guarantees. I lived unite like CBS through a lot of it can go from the Hudson river. I didn't have the film if I didn't have tennis coach. So it was a real labor of love. So we say well, thank you for doing it. And again, this one is going to be shown Brooks tomorrow night. Andrew what time is it smart? That's eight o'clock, right? Kevin. Seventy seven o'clock tomorrow. And I think another thing to point out, and you kind of at Andrew, but you should talk about all the other celebrities modern day celebrities there, you kind of mentioned the few, but think that's a really impressive list of people that you assemble. Yeah. It's a. Yeah. That's right. Yeah. We had everyone pretty much there because we really couldn't get with Tobin it, but I mean going up is a myth that that actually twelve of the people that we filmed now, sadly along with us. So, you know, it just shows you that it's we managed to catch people at the right time in a way, though, it affects is sort of time capsule. Thumb pigs that we managed to get some of those people and everyone, by the way, I'm going to start. Hopefully, I can help you build some Twitter followers. Follow funny. You never knew on Twitter. "But not until I mean, I went and auditioned for NYU and Juilliard and had the biggest ego. I wish I had that ego. But I I mean, I walked into these auditions not prepare Ono. Oh, no. And you know, you walk into that big massive room. And there's just a desk at the end of it with like two or three people at the end, and you walk in. And they're like, okay. What have you prepared? And you say nothing, and I said. Be. I said I was like I thought. I thought this was an interview, and they said, no you're supposed to perform you're supposed to prepare a con-, you know, comedic monologue and dramatic monologue. And a luckily I was obsessed with lily Tomlin at the time, and I had read her book. The title of which is available on Univer. Yeah. It's really long when. The universe on the universe at the end. Now, I'm can't remember it. But I had rooms on my head remembered searched for signs of intelligent life in the universe. That's I think what it was called. I came up with that. I came up I found it myself, and my own crazy brain, and I we're Lee have voted graphic memory. So I kind of just by memory started to do this monologue of the monologue where she's standing on the corner of walk and don't walk, and I just kind of randomly went through the pages. And I remember seconds after they said you need to prepare comedy monologue. Yeah. Okay. So you can imagine it was probably pretty crappy, and then I had to do something dramatic. And I said, I don't have anything dramatic. Can. I just make it up and make it make it up. We'd like you to make Shakespeare if that's possible. That's what I did. What did you do for the make them up? And the drama. I just kind of wrote it as they went ride. When you ask can I just make it up. What was their response? What were they going to do? I mean, they I think they were more fascinated by me and. Right. And like what? Way. Did you in fact, go to New York for this? I did never crossed anyone's mind that maybe you should prepare again. I blame my mother. Well, she's listening who also we're gonna blame. But if she's listening, you'll have to give me an Email sender. But so not surprising that I didn't get into those. But yeah. And then American Academy, and that was great because that was also local I could just you know, move away..

"God, I know a lot of you look at this show is an escape. And sometimes I have to talk about things that are going on in the world that that are serious. No matter how serious they are. So today, this is what I saw in the news Instagram most like post is now a photo of aid. Must be a sexy. Tell you that this is the most popular Instagram posts. I don't it doesn't do anything for me. But I don't judge. So here's what happened. Do you know about this anybody some people know, all right? Well, ten days ago, someone started Instagram account and posted this AIG and said, let's set a world record together and get the most like post on Instagram beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner and says we got this. So kylie's photo that they're referring to is this one that she posted last year with her baby, which is a precious photo. And it has over eighteen million likes. And I understand that that's beautiful picture. So that was the record holder, but not anymore. Now that AIG has. Over forty one million likes. The eggs life has completely changed. I want that on the show egg. If you're listening. I want you on the show. So now that holds the record everyone's going to try to beat the egg. And you know, what happens when you beat today gets homeless? Thank you. I spend it up. So you weren't ahead of me. I. So anyway, I think I know how to break the record. I combine both posts I named it Edward shelling. Jenner the third. And it is working. This now has are most like photo, it has almost four million likes on it. So that's more likes than this photo of me in the rock. That's more than this photo of me. And Julia Roberts somehow it's more likes than this photo of Barack Obama giving me the presidential medal of freedom. Hashtag. But I think this is great because with all the divisiveness that we have going on in the world, we found something that we can all agree on. It's a damn eg. That's what we all agree on at least. It's something it's better than nothing. What

"While that was really the best right? Hi. Hi, ryan. So glad you listened to the podcast. They don't like Kevin shout out to all the bought. So did those reviews? Thank you. Shoutout to do you think it's Russians? I think those are rushing. Yeah. Oh my God. There is worse for America than Trump than this podcast. They're trying to influence handy. They're trying to get you in there. So these aren't real my gosh, this is going to be fun to watch. Now. We'll see how Andy suddenly starts thinking the Russians. This is fascinating never thought of it until I never thought to look at our ratings talk about lily Tomlin, and Jane lily Tomlin, and Jane Fonda, I love them so much when I was in high school lily Tomlin was on Broadway in a show called appearing nightly, and she was had a one woman show on Broadway. And it was unbelievable. It was fantastic. And I knew her from Laffin, and I knew her from that. And she's she do Letterman wishy Letterman 'cause she used to do Letterman. Yeah. She used to do Letterman, and it's so much fun to see she and Jane Fonda on grace and Franky and on this was they have all these young viewers. I think I just saw your nephew on TB. Mary. Really? Yeah. May. But just so everyone knows Mary's nephew works with Nancy Pelosi. Yeah. And is pretty high up in that. Tell you a little time Mary's political bent. Yeah. So she every time you see Nancy Pelosi on the news like walking from one meeting to another. There's Mary's nephew, which I think is very cool. But that's not what we were saying. So anyway, young people love this Franken, grace grace, and Frankie grace and Franky everyone. I know who started watching it as like, Debbie, I have watched. So my daughter, Emily, who's twenty four fell in love with grace and Franky and kept telling me to watch it. And like I do with most of the people. I love the most. I did not listen. That's all ready for an extended period of time. And then I when I truly ran out of things to watch. I thought let me try this grace and Franky and two episodes in I began wondering why the hell I never listened to people when they recommend. I love it so much. We've seen every episode where I think the new one starts out will now came out last Friday dropped last Friday, and they're just amazing together on on grace and Franky for whatever reason I didn't have such huge expectations of them together on the Ellen show. I didn't think they were going to be grace and Franky either they're going to be lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, which they were and their chemistry together. They're just like endurable. Larry's both names. Billy hasn't been here. Five times. She hasn't been here. Ten times she'd never been here before. Not one thing. I know lily Tomlin had never been here. See how give Ellen her Mark Twain prize rise. That's right. And it's just it was so fun to see how they are really sharp and funny. She is the timing that they have for the I just wanted to. I just want to go on a road trip with them. They just make me laugh lily, just I dunno lily, just just she is the perfect complement to. And Jane, just like has amazing comic timing has a little slow burn has a little look has a little thing. And then we did questions. Right. I don't think we call it. We didn't call it burning questions for them. But we we ask them questions. And the question we asked was describe each other in one word..

Keep a lookout for that. It's going to be great. And it's I'm I'm. I'm partnering up with Malley, you know, Malley Ronco. Yeah. We use products. All the time. I use Nellie Mae collie. I shine the face defender. Exactly. Yeah. So I'm I'm working with her. So thank you down Bronx. All right next. Call caller what your name from where you calling. Hi, this is Noel from South Carolina and voice on radio. Thank you very much. Yeah. You gotta have some South Carolina housewives going on. And root rewire. Absolutely love you and Cynthia. My question is for you. You're so wonderful. Thank you. I've watched the housewives, you know, all this time. And I wonder if you could think of one thing throughout your career during the housewives that you could change in an incident or anything that happened. Maybe what would that be? Wow. A lot things. Probably you know, I try to live my life without regrets. And I really feel like everything that has happened to me on my journey was a necessary for me to be able to appreciate all the great things that I have going on now. So I really don't have any regrets. But it is painful to watch some of the things that I've done on the show for sure. Back to the phones. Caller. What's your name end from where you calling? Hey, this is calling from union New Jersey and have a question for Ribaut. Okay. What was the best part about working on Grayson, Frankie? And also who is the bigger diva lily Tomlin are Jane Fonda. Oh, that's a good question. You know, the whole time I was doing my scene. I'm in grace and Franky for this new season that just came on today's ago, the whole time and do seen Andy I'm doing the acting thing. Right. The whole time, I'm doing my scenes in my mind. I'm thinking, oh my God. That's lily Tomlin. Jane fonda. You know? Oh, an actor prepares an active. No, that's. James bond. I'm saying these words to so there was no diva stuff, but they hold their own. These are ladies fifty plus years of the business. I don't know how long they've been stars and still show up to work every day. I should be so lucky. Last call that I call her. What's your name? Where are you calling? I am a larger taking. Hey elisha. What's your question? Question is year. Room was the last time CENA spoken, the king and heavy met her baby. Yes, I absolutely have met Brooklyn and she's beautiful so adorable and actually spoke to Kenya about three days ago. All right. So ru is the series done. No. We are. We we start episode seven tomorrow got it. Yeah. So hardest thing I've ever done Andy really most. But the most rewarding thing too because you know, you live in this life, and you put up all these walls to protect yourself. So you can go forward. This. Call me to tear those wall. Tear those walls down. And it's it's scary. But it's rewarding because you know, you don't have you don't eat those walls anymore. How many are you making? They're going to be ten. They have ours. They're an hour. An I'm working with the kid scripted and hour's show and have a pages a day to remember yesterday. I had just done dragging dancing in drag. It every episode with his Queen who's driving cross country with this little girl. You're in dry every episode. I'm in drag it every sometimes to drag numbers every episode, and that got loud, these lines and on Dragway, the most difficult thing for me to do on that show is to come up a new way to say bring back my. Oh god. The most difficult thing is coming up with how am I going to say it because I got that. In fact, for people out there watching where we're filming right now we filmed drag race here on the on the sound stage for about two maybe three years in the same spot here in LA his. Cynthia how you know. It was interesting to me because you get this speech from your guide in Tokyo, saying lateness doesn't work in Tokyo. And this winds up being a big kind of kind of through lying. It's very disrespectful. Just in general, especially in the Japanese culture..
