"Morning edition from NPR News. I'm David Greene. And I'm no well King. Good morning When he becomes President, Joe Biden will face pressure to do something about police accountability. Some people want him to revive federal oversight of police the Trump Administration and did some programs that did that. But other people say it's not enough. They want more change. NPR's Adrian Florido went to Milwaukee. One city where this dispute is happening in 2014, a Milwaukee police officer shot Dontre Hamilton 14 times. The protests over his killing started months later. Nate Hamilton is Don Trey's brother. My family was angry. The community was angry that it was taken months and months to come up with a conclusion. What this officer did the protests for Justice Royal to Milwaukee for months, they led the police chief at the time to fire the officer and to call in the Department of Justice to conduct a review of the police force. People thought that the D O. J was gonna come in and trade opportunity for change. But before the DOJ finished its report, Donald Trump took office and his deal J. Ended many of the federal government's police accountability efforts across the country. The report in Milwaukee was showed It took a lot of energy out of the movement, right, you know, because it felt like we wasted time waiting on a DOJ months later, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel got ahold of a draft of the DOJ is report it found a long list of problems within the police department. Friend Royal president of the Milwaukee and the police. Eep says that because it was just a leaked draft, the police chief cast doubts upon its findings, telling the newspaper it was full of errors. It just reaffirmed that MPD was not Sincere about true reform because the first opportunity had to discredit this report. They took that opportunity. Royal is among the African American leaders who want to see Joe Biden's Justice Department revive its commitment to policing local police and his city and across the country. Milwaukee Alderwoman Lily Lake Hogs is another. You know, the last four years, the African American community has not been able to depend on that even happening in largely black cities like Milwaukee, which were critical to Biden's victory. Many see a renewed federal commitment to police accountability is one way Biden can keep the promise he made in his victory speech to deliver for black Americans. Dog says, trying to reform her city's police without federal support. The last few years has been hard. We happen to be a city that is trying to make some of the changes that a DOJ investigation would have helped us to get to in 2018 and a C L U lost who compelled the Milwaukee police tow end Stop and frisk. City Council created a citizen's commission toe work with the police Department to implement reforms from that leaked DOJ report with a focus on community policing. That commission's work is ongoing. And in a statement to NPR, the police Department said it is committed to that work. Doubts about that commitment are one reason Marquez a. Tucker left the Citizens Commission. She used to be a chair and a leading voice for police reform in Milwaukee, But he came to believe the police had no interest in reforming. She now campaigns to defund the police department and redirect its money to social programs, a tactic she doubts the Biden administration will embrace. People are gonna wanna pile money into reform and people are gonna be disappointed. You know, years later when they find out that that money they piled into that doesn't work because people are still getting murdered by police. The commission Tucker left is now led by Nate Hamilton, whose brother don trays, killing sparks the whole process. He sees things differently. We know we just not about the ballast police officers in the next year to they're gonna be around for a while. So we want to see something within the next few months is going to benefit not only the safety of our citizens but also the safety of our officers. This tension between calls for more traditional police reform and more radical change is playing out nationwide, especially after last summer's racial justice movement sparked by the killing of George Floyd. I need a Gupta, who ran the Justice Department's civil rights division during the Obama administration says That's one reason Joe Biden's DOJ won't be able to simply resurrect federal police accountability programs that the Trump administration slashed. There's a lot to rebuild, but also in a post George Floyd world, people feel a little more cynical about some of the Justice Department tools around reform and accountability. She says that under Joe Biden, the Justice Department is going to have to do something deeper Toe look at not just using a policing approach but creating public safety for people in crisis. You know, there are a lot of different programs that I think in a lot of communities around the country, people are calling Florida The country faces a new political landscape when it comes to policing, she says. The new president will have to navigate it. Adrian Florido NPR news School district in Oklahoma has a unique approach to getting students back into the classroom. Even his coronavirus cases are spreading through schools across the country. Rather than sending students home after they've been exposed to the virus. They're finding a way to keep them on site here is state impact. Oklahoma's Robbie course. It works like this. If a high school student and Mustang Oklahoma is exposed to Cove in 19, but hasn't tested positive, though, remain in school, but segregate from other students in quarantine classrooms. It's an innovative way to safely keep kids in school so they can continue their academic studies. It will give us more data to drive a response to the virus that state health commissioner Lance Fry. Initially 20 students will take part. They'll be tested daily and those who are positive for covert 19 will be sent home to isolate. Educators and medical professionals have panned the move. Oklahoma Education Association president Alicia Priest says it's a bad idea to put teachers with students who might have cove it. Educators aren't getting pigs. To be used as an experiment. It's offensive, irresponsible and dangerous. Former Oklahoma State epidemiologists Aaron Wendell Bo says the two week experiment isn't enough time to determine if it's safe. Especially with case counts and hospitalizations surging well, if one is just the general idea of in school quarantine, it's not policy that I would recommend, particularly this time Studies have shown students do better with classroom learning. Mustang Superintendent Charles Bradley says many students exposed to the coronavirus don't test positive and lose out by quarantining at home. We are looking forward to collecting any data that would help us for our long term goals of providing face to face instruction on ongoing basis across the country. School districts have struggled as infection, Serge Administrators hope this new program will limit that impact while still providing needed classroom instruction. For.

"Like in the job world out, you know, looking for the job and trying to have the right resume, and you know, have the right outfit at work and get the promotions is always trying to feel other people's ideas of success for you. But sometimes when you can turn on from the inside out than no one has to define you and then these opportunities start coming to you meeting you and then you meet life from a more empowered incentive place. I think that oftentimes it's easy to overlook the fact that you truly being your most authentic. Self and true to yourself actually ends up bringing in more opportunities and stronger sense of purpose and like just grounded nece and whatever it is that you're pursuing instead of chasing after. Because when you're chasing after whatever other people are trying to define as the box that you need to fit in your always going to be replaceable all way. There's always another goal waiting in the lobby. There's always another person who's gonna like kill the audition to, and you don't end up having that sense of uniqueness and strength because you know who you are. That's right. Yeah. How do you navigate having that strong sense of self in a world that does ask for carbon copies more often than blueprints? Yeah, that's so good. It's just about finding peace with who you are in the one that's enough, you know, and you will attract your people your. -tunities. If if if you don't attract them, there weren't for you, you know the not for you or maybe it's more cultivating you have to do. Maybe it's more preparing you have to do, but I'll take it all with a light heart and know that you know, like I may show up as a rose, a rose. You're a tulip. You know, maybe another lady is a lily lake. We're not all trying to be the same flower, but we're beautiful flowers from the same garden, and then whatever flowered this particular situation is calling for. That's what's needed. But it doesn't mean I'm any less. She's any less. Okay. You know, that's the flower, but we all were all beautiful in her own right. And just seeing that and just I'm so just happy with the life that has manifested since. And I tell young girls that you know deal with competition, whether it's in Hollywood modeling, acting or on social media, like it's so much of it everywhere. And it really is a energetic sickness till where it's the thing like it's not enough and we have to look for instant gratification. And we have to get this Southworth approval from competing. But that's not the case. You know, real life is how are will. Real life is where we're able to take our power back and say, no, I'm not competing. I'm just showing up. Yeah, I think I not. I think I know I have found so much peace in knowing that the things that I didn't get were never met for me. That's right. And I remember when I was in college, I, I had an internship that was basically in the bag. It was at CNN and I was so excited and I hadn't gotten like the confirmation letter, what have you. But I was like, told that I was going to have it, I was going to have in, I was like, oh my gosh, and moved to New York. This is going to change my life. And then I was told I didn't get it. And I remember crying because I was like, oh my gosh, like that was everything that I had planned for and I did all of this and I was looking at apartments and I remember crying once about it. And then three days later. I was offered a job as a reporter at a local television station which had never happened like a Muslim woman wearing hijab as a reporter on a local television station ever like the history of this country. And I remember three days later, I got that job and I was just like, this is way better than going and getting coffee for some of the angry CNN. And after that day I had never gotten upset over not getting it like not getting a job opportunity or not getting travel between or whatever it is that I realize like this really wasn't meant for me and.

This has been something that I've been passionate about four years, and I'm constantly on this journey of discovery and learning about myself my potential and really understanding Mitra purpose. So we're kicking this podcast off with the first episode on binding your purpose, and I truly believe that your purpose is something that you've been familiar with for a very long time, but sometimes you lose that sense of purpose when you are influenced by other people, whether that's. Only members or insecurities or fears, and we really wanna find that place again and bring strength to that place because I know you have it in you. We all have it in us. And I think that's the perfect way for us to kick off this conversation journey. This is an on the go podcasts. So I'm hoping you're listening to this while you are on your way to do something incredible or coming from doing something incredible, but just know that we are going to be with you along this journey and I'm excited to talk to Leyla Delia today about finding your purpose. She is a spiritual writer and practitioner wellness educator and the founder of vibrate, higher, daily dot com. She started out in a field where it was easy for people to be telling her who to be what to be and kind of navigate her own journey for her, and she had to get to a place through some dark moments to really find out what her true purpose is. So welcome to our first episode. I'm just incredibly thrilled to be talking to you. How are you? I'm so good. How are you? I'm wonderful. My heart is so happy to be here today reflected. This is it's on both sides of this just like the energy like. Just like connecting. I just want to kind of get into like the sense of finding purpose because I think that were just means a different thing to different people. How do you see purpose and passion similar different? I see them exact. They're exactly the same, really. Oh, yeah. They're exactly the same and you know, you can't have one without the other lake. Your purpose is always going to be something you're passionate about. And like you said, I say the same exact thing. Passion can come from pain. It can come from joy. It can come from, you know inspiration and you know, your passion will definitely be your purpose will definitely be something you're passionate about, whether it's through pain through joy through love, and that's a purpose. And then you know from there, you just say, how can I respond? What gifts do I have to respond? Because in that, that's what turns a passion into a purpose when you actually take action and respond. So when was the first time you remember thinking about. About the word purpose when it came to terms with life? Yeah. The biggest moment I remember was one of my lowest moments and just thinking like, okay, this is not it. A life is more than this, but I have no idea like what that more is and what it looks like, how to go get it how to find it. But I knew it had something to do with purpose because my life was never about my purpose. It was always maybe about other people's purposes and just surviving, you know, that type of thing. So purpose was really the thing that came to me and stick with me just always something in Nate. Louis, let me know that that was a roadmap out of like the life I was living, or, you know, just the unfulfillment I was experiencing life. And so from then on it was like, what is my purpose? And that turned into its own jury, you know, find figuring out what that was as well. So you talk about like a low point in your life. And I think for a lot of people, bats. When thinking about your purpose and finding gate seems to be the only answer. Can you paint me a picture of what that low point in your life looked like, oh, my goodness and granite there a few before, like it really caught on like, okay, this is the path. So like for instance, one was in a hospital for seven days just sick because my life had got to that point to where I was stressed out to the point of physical illness manifesting. Oh, my God. Yeah. And so I'm laying in a hospital bed for seven days and thinking, okay, when I leave here, I'm going back to a crappy relationship, a crappy life. And even though I hated being in that hospital, it was piece like what was going on in my life wasn't happening, and I share my website on Instagram that at that time I was of, you know, just survivor at that time I didn't over. I wasn't an overcome, then I am now, but at the time I wasn't an overcome yet. I was -vivor of domestic violence, and you know. A cycle of bat, relationships, dysfunction, relationships, and, and you know, and so you get the lesson, it repeats, you know, saying experience different person. So all that. And so my body shutdown and was like, no girl you. We're not going to. We're going to give you an illness. So it got me sick to the point where I was out of the house in the hospital, you know? And I just and that's really the, you know, the turning point from my whole journey in the in early mid two thousand is when all that catapulted even to like where I am today. It's just so magical how that happened, but I- rendered they're not hospital that night. I was like, I just wanna find purpose. I don't wanna go back to render the key word what you just said. It is, surrender you have to surrender because it's like this life that you've crafted for yourself subconsciously usually because you know, we're running out of highlight. We're doing with mom, dad, communities, friends. Everyone else says good, even maybe pop culture, but. But is that really who you are? Is that your own northstar? And if it's not, you're not living to the compass of your true purpose and it's someone else's. That's what you always fall off. You never feel like you're going in the right direction. You're maybe going back in Arkle's. Yeah, heating directions in this just a mess. Not a lot of people who follow. You might know that you were an actress before the because you went from a world where you at to pretend to be certain characters and pretend to live certain lives. And oftentimes people who are looking up taxpayers forget that they're also humans who have problems who have real life issues. How do you feel like living that one life led you to needing to live the life you live today? Oh, it was so major. I will never forget. There was a time. My little self in my role ahead. One time we're not too far from here on the CBS lot on Beverly and after a show sitcom was always on. And I remember a couple of the audience came up and at the time I was regular and they came up an asthma, my autograph and they, they're like, yeah, we watch the show every week, and you know you just wanted to meet you and say, hi and get your autograph and take a picture like a real picture, not an Instagram picture back. He put on actual camera and and so it was that long ago and I just remember feeling like you want monograph leg. My life was a mess you know on like you in east. Even in that moment, it was like, people don't know. People don't know that you could be going through a whole different journey on the inside then what's appearing on outside. And so just being on the sad and you know doing all the things that acting things and wanting to chase that life and find success there. It was never fulfiling for me and always was going to give you, oh my goodness, fame attention and in. But what I found now is the fame that you are really seeking. It's your own self your, it's your own self approval. It's your own self worth. It's are you famous yourself, you know, if you just wanna use that word, but so great. Are you famous here? So I wanna famous myself. Yeah, you know what I mean? Are you your own goals. Like, you know, do you look to yourself and do you see your own greatness? Because in that world you're chasing everybody else's. You know what they think is beautiful and what they think is crate and who they think is popular and who they're giving the next roles who so is always something out there, but never something inner. And so that's really why never fulfilled me. And at that time being the young girl at was I couldn't understand that and going to audition 's in is just that whole cycle. But then it's also not just in Hollywood, but it's in life. Like in the job world out, you know, looking for the job and trying to have the right resume, and you know, have the right outfit at work and get the promotions is always trying to feel other people's ideas of success for you. But sometimes when you can turn on from the inside out than no one has to define you and then these opportunities start coming to you meeting you and then you meet life from a more empowered incentive place. That's why in that something else is waiting for you whether you feel like it's better or not, but it just brings that sense of inner peace that you were talking about. And that is something that's like priceless.
