"But I knew it was happening or coming. Yeah, I mean, that perspective is really interesting. Do you feel yourself kind of standing on the shoulders of other queer artists who came before you? Absolutely. Who do you think of as your kind of influences and icons in that way? Like who do you feel yourself following in the footsteps of? I can't really say I feel myself following in the footsteps of exactly anyone. I definitely feel thankful for the ones who come before me, though, but when I'm creating I'm never like, okay, let's do this like how Frank did it or she just style Elton did this or whatever. But as I said, you know, I'm thankful for what they have done to pave the way. Yeah. You said in an interview with my colleague and pal Sidney Madden from NPR music, you said you're not trying to comfort anyone. And that line really really jumped out at me. Did you feel like this song was going to be challenging to the audience? Absolutely. I knew I would also lose a lot of people, as well as gain people. I knew I'd have to have a talk with my family. What else? I don't know. I was just excited to get closer to breaking out of this box of people pleasing and trying to make everybody happy. Did you feel pressure? Did your label come to you and kind of say like were they looking for you to continue doing exactly what you were doing on the last record or were my label was pretty much they were like get on that fucking polar you dropped. No I'm kidding. I'm keeping my label actually this is probably the furthest from what they respect and I even had a couple of people like, are we sure we want to do this? Or whatnot, but you know they came through and were supportive of my ideas and they always have been and I'm thankful enough that I have the creative freedom to do what I want to do in my muse game my music videos. So Montero called me by your name. That was NPR music's song of the year. And I was wondering, like, what was your song of the year and what was your album of the year? Because I'm always I'm a music geek and I'm always looking for recommendations. Tell me what to listen to. Let's see. What's one of my favorite songs of the year? I gotta give a song of the year. Okay. Well, heat waves. I love heat waves. I've been listening to that song a lot. I think that's a really great song it feels very nostalgic. Heat waves by heat waves by glass animals in the glass animals. I love that song. And for album, I don't know it's been it's been a lot of great albums this year. My favorite album outside of my own. Okay, of course, you know, I love sour. I love planted her. My competitors at the Grammys. By Olivia Rodrigo and Doja Cat, respectively. Yes. Let's see who else. Yeah, I mean, you know, that's mainly, I guess I can say the only other songs on the other albums I've been listening to outside of my own like with the majority of the songs. Yeah, yeah. Do you listen to your own album for pleasure? I listen to my own album for pleasure. Huge fan of me. 'cause often, you know, we talk to artists and it's just like, oh my God, as soon as I was listening to myself. It's like when you hear your voice recorded back and it doesn't sound like what you hear in your head or something and some people are really self conscious about that. Have you just listened, you just rock your own record for fun? Yeah, but only when I'm with myself, like if I'm with family or friends or something, I'm not gonna play my own music. But I genuinely enjoy me so, you know, I can't even expect other people to enjoy me if I don't enjoy myself, but you don't like throw a party and gather all your friends and family together and just put on your own records. I will throw a party, but I will only gather myself and pretty much turn up in my house and I'm like, oh my God, oh my God, I love him. That's fantastic. That is really, really admirable. I don't hear that a lot from musicians. You know, so many people are celebrating yourself feels like ostentatious or something. Yeah, I know it feels like narcissistic or something even, but it's more of just, okay, how long can I sit with this? If I can sit with this and love this for this amount of time, I'm sure other people will. It's the same way I knew, okay, these songs are gonna be the bigger songs on this album and I listen to call me religiously before it came out. More than any song that I had ever made, and then you know the same with like industry baby, so yeah. So on the day that call me by your name came out. You wrote this beautiful letter to your 14 year old self. What do you want to say to other 14 year olds queer kids and otherwise who might be listening? Get a job loser. No I'm kidding. I see I say I say follow what you think you should do 'cause I like to sell people to be yourself and come up, but it's not always easy as it may seem like I'm in a good place to do that. Other people may have a abusive family members or whatnot or be at a really hard school just being a really hard place in their life. So I guess just take your time, know when you feel ready to do stuff and go for it. Like it gets better. Yeah, good. Awesome. All right, loneliest, thank you so much for being here and congratulations again on having NPR music song of the year. Thank you so much, Steven. You have a great time. From NPR music and all songs considered, I'm Stephen Thompson, thanks so much for listening. We will see you next time..

"Vilna's X thanks so much for joining us. No problem. Here I am. Well, first off, I don't want to forget that we are here to celebrate we are recording this after hours, so I'm not afraid to tell the world that I am literally drinking wine right now. How about you? I'm actually getting ready for another interview crazy enough. Yeah. Well, in the spirit of celebration, I want to think of this interview as your victory lap. How did you think that you would get to this point? And how does it feel to look back on the 2021 that you've had? It's absolutely been maybe the most incredible year of my life. It's been a journey too, you know? Last year was really hard. I mean, even parts of this year's really hard, even right now. I mean, you know, you always want to have your hard parts, but above everything else, it's been really fun. I've grown a lot, like, in every single aspect, like spiritually, emotionally, financially, like success wise, every way. Do you give yourself space to celebrate and reflect or is it kind of all business all the time? Yeah, but in the midst of business, I always find ways to celebrate. How so? Let's say, okay, I went to the script club, you know, if you like to go, that was cool. That was really fun. I went race car drive with my friends. Maybe about a month ago. That was super cool. I had things given in this huge Airbnb with like a pool table and a pool and a bowling alley in the basketball court with my family and we played twig games. We dressed up and everything. That was really fun. Even you know going to the studio like talking to the people who I work with, my makeup artist, my hair dress, like, it's fun, it's fun to talk. We have great times. Yeah. Nice. Well, I want to talk about Montero, the song, because that's why we're here today. When I first heard it, you know, I don't think it's necessarily what I expected or what a lot of fans expected after songs like old town road. Did you set out to write more of a pop song? Oh, not necessarily. This was one of the only songs that came to me like randomly from scratch, like a melody in my head. And I just went full out with it. And I already knew it was like a really great pop song. I was like, okay, how do I add dead to this? How do I make this different from the rest? And that was by being myself, you know, telling a story that had just happened to me. And, you know, having a song about gay sex. It was really fun. This is your standard chart topping material. Yes. The classic gay sex song that's number one on the charts. Did you have any idea that it would be a phenomenon? I genuinely can say that I did from the moment the song was conceived. I was like, oh my God, this song is gonna be huge. Sometimes you just know. Was it just 'cause you were happy with how it turned out? Or did you feel like that it was speaking to something larger? It just felt special, you know, and it definitely was and it was different from anything else that I had done, anything else that I had heard before. And coming from me, I knew it would be even more of like a, oh my God, this person made this. Yeah. Yeah, and it's kind of a tone setter for that record because I feel like the full album is kind of full of surprises, at least in terms of what people think of maybe what people were thinking of when they thought of Lil Nas X. Absolutely. This album is really personal. It's like, in every song, it's like ridden for me. And in hopes that that everybody else would just like it, you know, like the songs that are really personal. And, you know, all the other good things. Well, the songs? Hook is built around the words call me by your name, which refers to the title of an absolutely beautiful movie from a few years back. It's a drama about coming out. Can you talk about how that movie inspired you? Because I love that movie and really want more people to see it. The movie inspired me in a way of like, I was in an Airbnb like just starting to work on the album, and I didn't know exactly what my next album was going to sound like or what I was going to do to come out as a different person. I didn't even have plans to go super crazy and sexual and be completely out there like that, but it happened. And the movie helped inspire me and say, okay, I can do this. Let's take a quick break. I'm Stephen Thompson talking with Lil Nas X about his song Montero, NPR music's number one song for 2001. So I don't want to forget the role that the video played in this song success because while you were filming yourself riding a stripper pole to hell and giving Satan a lap dance, did you think to yourself this video is definitely gonna get nominated for a Grammy? I actually can say that I that was probably the least thing I expected to be in May definitely not the Grammys 'cause I feel like I don't know, I thought the Grammys were just much more traditional and conservative, a lot of the times. So, you know, complete surprise and you know, I'm thankful for that. Yeah. Well, what was the process that went into making that video? Did you map out exactly what you wanted the video to be? Or did an art director come to you and say here's what we're thinking? Map that the video word for word scene for scene, I was like, okay, I want this to be this. I want that to be that. I knew I wanted this video to be crazy and I wanted to be something that was going to set the tone for the era that I planned on embarking, you know? I mean, because obviously you know when you're filming yourself giving Satan a lap dance, that it's going to be controversial in certain circles. Like, did you feel yourself wanting to have that fight? Or did you just want to like make something that felt provocative and true to yourself? I wanted to create a real pop culture moment, you know, I wanted that. I wanted to, you know, like with this song and the substance of the song, I was like, okay, I have to make sure this video really emphasizing or even more exaggerated, you know? Did you expect to fight kind of when you were making it? I expected to have fun shooting in dunking on anybody who had something to say about it. I mean, did you did you feel yourself 'cause obviously you were somebody who mixes it up with haters on Twitter, you clap back. You're not afraid to kind of have fun with it a little bit. Did you feel yourself expecting to have to have those conversations? I definitely did. I knew it was coming. I wasn't surprised at all. Especially the climate that we've live in or have been living in forever. But it's getting better, so I guess that's cool. I know it wasn't going to be as hard as it would have been if I would have done this in the year 2000 or whatnot..

"Feel like he keeps topping himself. You've got you know him taking these quote unquote masculine central environments the football field and then he's playing with brokeback mountain of all things like a movie that he would've only seen recently probably because he was a baby with him out right then on top of that. You have him promoting safe sex. And you've got billy porter showing up for a hot second. He just keeps sobbing himself. I'm curious what you how you feel about the imagery that he's using his his music. Because obviously you know. I think before old town run became a big hit. We only kind of knew that song and then the video comes out. And now he's kind of inseparable from his images like that is what is driving all of this in many ways. What do you think of how he's using all of these images i. I was thinking as. We're beginning this conversation back when i was in college. I'm a black gay man so we're always talking about the divas on the music right and so we would always put people into three categories in ranked order vocalist was as good as it got. Right singer was right beneath that and at the bottom was recording artists. I think that we need to add something into their. That is just about being an artist. Because i think that will not x has shown us that he is an artist right. He has something to say. He has a visual. he has a sound. he has an aesthetic. He has a perspective but listening to this album. I'm thinking to myself like oh little ex. Wanted to talk about things right. He wanted to talk about paying. He wanted to talk about trauma he wanted to talk about being queer. He wanted to talk about you know his life. Experiences traveled talked about in. Both of you talked about being kind of a diary And i felt like most of the songs it feels like. They were written to someone about the way that you hurt me or the way that you left me or the way that i want you or the way that you know what i mean like. It feels like he's talking about something. And i just really didn't expect him to have so much substance because i think that so often in the things that we see on. Social media is just like entertaining. I did not expect it to be so heavy right. Like he's got a song called dead right now where he's talking about wanting to die right and then making the choice to not tell me as she loved me wishy cianci mabvuta fever even shit. We saw song similar to that The suicide hotline number a couple of years ago like the way that those kinds of conversations have an impact on people is really really valuable as a gay man who remembers wanting to kill myself when i was nineteen that resonated and i was like. Oh wow i get what he's doing here and i appreciate it lou. Naza has been dealing with and talking about these themes in his music since to begin at. But it's the country trap discoursed that makes people not pay attention to the words that he's using an old town road right or it's the visuals that we're all paying attention to so you're not hearing him talk about you know a suicidal aviation in sun goes down right but all of these themes that we're talking about in bringing about. He's been talking about this the entire time in his career. Now we're able to seriously i think. Treat montero lamont hill right as an artist as a serious. You know text you know with this album. I'll just say quickly for those of you. That aren't familiar with prevail that was travails way of saying. I told you so. And i told you i think this conversation is a testament i think to The stronger songwriting. That we're hearing montero like travolta's right These themes have always been present in the music and even an old town road assam. That people have wanted to write off as a kid. I saw like there are some lyrics on there. That are not so. Pg okay so with monteiro. I think the biggest difference is that some of the details From his personal journey specifically about his family and about some coming to terms with his sexuality particularly while growing up in the bible belt. Yoke being raised in georgia in the atlanta area. They have made it into the songwriting. So that the songs feel more lived in. I was comparing monteiro to the seven ep which he released off the heels off old town road and the seven. Ep had a lot to live to because clearly he was trying to capitalize off at this big moment but the biggest takeaway for me was that there was some hesitation. He was referring to issues that he had with his family but the lyrics were so vague. That i was like is this about the parent. Trap is talking about lindsey low. Actually but i be curious to hear your thoughts on the song closure in particular august seven ep. And how that compares this particular moment because not too long after the seven ep out alone ause ex came forward and said like by the way. This was like my coming out. Moment closure was a song that made my sexuality clear and by the way on the cover of the seven. Ep i'm riding toward you know. A rainbow lit city tower. You know maybe it's just me but those themes or i guess. That sort of reckoning wasn't nearly as spelled out as they are on this album just back futures this is you know the ep is at the beginning stages of like do. I really wanted to these people that i'm gay. You know while i'm a rapper. And deal with all of that. And i think at this point. He's leaned all the way into it right. And you're right. I feel like with the lyrics in particular on a song like dead right now. For example right. He's talking about his issues with his father right when he came out with his his father. Those issues talking about devices that his mother is dealing with and how it's still an unfolding situation that he's having to grapple with. There's a lot of like real miss in this album. That i think you know folks just weren't expecting. Yeah what i find. So fascinating and heartening about his journey is the fact that when i think about the people who especially music who are able to sort of become the most famous or at least make the most money off of these things and be the ground breakers. They tend to be white people. When you think about someone like elton john or george michael. Obviously it took them longer to come out eventually. But we haven't really had a black pop star who has been able to be open and also be on the level of elton john or a. You know george michael Even if it was after the fact for them. Whitney was you know in the closet. Luther was in the closet. Little richard came out but then like went back in and there are so many things happening so to see someone like will not be able to do this as a black male pop star says to me that like. Maybe we've come a little bit of a way like we've come a little bit far in terms of being able to have the first gay popstar ever be a black person. In the fact that he seems to have control over what he's doing and doesn't feel like he's being controlled by these other forces i think is really really empowering. I wonder what you all think about that. Or if you have thoughts about that. I'm curious what you all think about the pop star versus rapper juxtaposition for low nasdaq's right. So like when. I look at this album on apple music. It's classified as a pop album and i feel like there are at least songs on here. That would could be submitted for awards that would be rap songs right and like i keep going back and forth on like..

"Fanti journalists travel anderson and journalist writer and producer jared hill. Welcome back to you both. It's great to have you thanks for having Thank you for having us and also with us is writer. Npr music contributor and co host of the bottom of the map podcast christina lee for the first time. Welcome to the show christina. Hello hello hello now if you told me back in two thousand nineteen we'd still be talking about low nasdaq's right now. I definitely would have bet against you. Old town road was on top of the billboard charts for a record breaking nineteen weeks. And now he's done the seemingly impossible. He's taken a successful novelty song and related into a budding influential music career. He's come out as gay and arguably become pop's biggest out star. He's had a second number one song montero. Call me by your name. Which was a love letter written to his younger self and his reformed other. Bma's snl and the b. e. t. awards. last week. He released his debut studio album. Monteiro following elaborate publicity rollout. That had him flaunting a fake pregnancy belly. Let's start off with our initial reactions travel. How do you feel about montero. i'm in love. I feel like the album has zero skips. And i'm i'm somebody who loves a skip. Okay i will let you know now. I even listen to the twenty four second into even listened to that every single time. I love the album. Y'all won't hear me say anything. Negative about well maybe something negative but it's okay you gotta have the complex and complicated of it all but yeah as far as the impressions. I love the album. It was not what i was expecting. as a fan of the music that he's put out thus far And so i think it it might be a challenge for some folks but you know we can deal with a challenge. Yeah i was kind of surprised myself at you know. It wasn't as rap. Heavy as i thought it would be. It felt very poppy. And i was getting a lot of like two thousand ten's vibes from it like a little katy perry a little bit of that going on. So i think it'd like you said i definitely think it's surprise some people in terms of the direction. Some of the takes. So jared what about you. How do you feel about this album. Heard wait seriously non fully. I'm i'm pleasantly surprised. I worked on the radio back when we had old town road and it was one of those things where i was like. Oh i'm really curious to see if we're going to hear from this person again and this album really surprised me with how much i felt like. He wanted to say but then also there are plenty of moments throughout this. I feel like a decidedly rap album and not a pop album for me so But we know that. I like black folks. Don't get some make a whole bunch of pop music right like. There's a whole thing about that. So i was very very happy with the album. Yeah yeah christina. How about you. So i think this album takes us under journey. That feels very well. Earned to be honest Jarrett you talked about like the some of the rat moments and also alluding to the fact that you know he sort of blossomed into this pop star. And i felt like we were being taken on that journey as we were listening to montero so i think in the beginning especially in the lead up to industry baby. It is very two thousand. Ten's rat with the shadow to elicit by walk up and so like you know by the end. It's a full circle moment in which he's collaborated with yet. Another member of the cyrus family. And i just felt i felt so happy for him. I'm so happy for him. Yeah i also really enjoyed this album and was really struck by how personal it gets if you've followed him at all even tangentially. I think that you'll hear all these stories that he's told in interviews and i know travel. You interviewed him for out magazine He was a cover star for that. And i know that in that interview and other interviews. He's given. He talked about his relationship with his parents and his coming out and what that has meant for him and i really think the way he incorporates that into his music if feels different from the way he approaches it in his social media life but also one in the same because it's on social media. He's doing a lot of clapping back For good reason but you can also sense the toll. It might be taking on him even as he's very quick with it and really sharp in the way he does those things and is obviously obliterating all this homophobic comments. That have come his way. It's really interesting to hear something like one of me where he's talking about how everyone doubted him and thought that he was going to be one. Hit wonder just like. I did just like i think a lot of people did the gulf audit things that you do. Just get your face the show. Oh you big big pimping lemme know eight. The next big thing yes. The performance is an art and yes a lot of it is very calculated but it's also very clear that he's sincere in many ways and and really feels all these things. It's not just about making money or becoming the biggest pop stars also about proving to himself who he can be in who he wants to be. travel you know. What was it like to interview him. In what sense did you get of where he's at in terms of figuring himself out because he is only twenty two and it must be so strange for someone like to try to come of age and hone his craft in front of the public. I like that. Yeah i mean. I think that's one of the things i try to encourage people to keep in mind about what we're witnessing. This is a baby gay. Who came out to his family. And to the entire world at the top of the charts. That comes with a lot of pressure right. We haven't had a black gay rapper at this level of mainstream attention ever and so he's dealing with kind of those every day kind of challenges that we as black queer people face when we're coming into ourselves learning to love ourself despite our family despite what the world tells us but then he's doing it on the national stage right and he's gotta worry about you know the republicans and the bible thumpers who feel away about the music and the visuals. He's gotta worry about all of the straight black men who feel as if he's you know perpetuating the emasculation of the black man but he's dealing with a lot at twenty two years old and then we have. This album which i feel is a triumph I'm an editor at extra magazine. Which is a toronto based. lgbtq outlet We had a writer. Derek cottingham write a review for us on the album and he talks about how he sees the album as like a diary right. A black clear man's diary in each song is the different entry that lets us into kind of the mindscape of what little nasdaq's is going through and from my interview with him. i think that shines. He's he's really just trying to have fun like his wildest dreams have come true in a matter of two three years. He used to be sleeping on his sisters. You know floor right a few years ago. There is a lot that this child is dealing with. And i think he's doing a fabulous job at it and you know he's got a bops on this album. Okay like to continue to deliver songs. That are catchy. That will stick with you. That get stuck in your head after the immense success that old town road had. I think that's a challenge in and of itself. And i think he succeeded so well i'm gonna ask you all about. That's what i want. Which is another single and video for that. Dropped at the same.

"Agenda like. We really get one one cents to do this at least to my knowledge what happened when we die. We're not So it's like. I'm not like about two pender to your kids or you like anybody like even i have even have to do with my family members. You know like 'cause my family members may not always agree with what i'm doing or like whoever i'm dating like they may not agree but it's like i honestly really truly wanted to live by. You know this is our life. We do this so what anybody else has to. Really say about it. I guess you know. I would say when it comes to the music. Just tell people. That's the reason as a parental advisory sticker that too on on on immune this either youtube kids thing and i don't know if you saw that there was a lady she lets likes searched up music for babies and industry baby popped up surprise. Like you looked up baby music. Like what would you expect from. That and your dad was a gospel singer. He's still seems to. He's actually on data right now on the background vocals. Though so was he. Did he know. Like i know you've said that you knew since you were five years old. You were gay and you know a lot of times. Your family knows but you just happen. Plug is possible that he could pick up on stuff. I mean i was super reserve though. So i guess i hate it a little better. The art of realization breakdown with that is. It's kinda like a lot of times. I think like what am i doing is for me like am i. Am i really happy doing this. My china impress everybody and then like basically on that on basically coming to the realization. Yeah this is for me. This is why i want to do. I'm sure i'm sure of it. You know are you. I am sure. Because i saw you tweet. That love pissing people off. That was control tweet. That's my thing. So what would you call what you do. Trolling marketing what. It's all of it All of is showing its marketing us. It works would have you realized about yourself in the past couple of years when you're alone in montero by himself and it's just him and his thoughts what have you realize the bunch of so. I don't know i feel like i got a lot of honestly because i spent a lot of time in solitude and like doing a lot of self reflecting like So i'm really aware of myself and like a lot of my hypocritical actions and whatnot. Would you all have like what human would actually just. How do you know how i am. My music videos on my video is much more like sexual and whatnot. Ainhoa how to. It'd be happy that people like. Oh he's not like those other gay people like all flamboyant and whatnot and it was like that's not a compliment you know. These people have been taught like this is not okay. It's grown into their mind. That's the one it's not that deep so you wanna be what you're saying you want to be wanting videos on purpose just to what saying it said it saying like i want the video it'd be entertaining and whether you like it or not like seeing men like do different things and what men always do is much more entertaining and actually enjoy it. You know. I mean. I look at it as you're who you are so you're living your truth. Can you be mad at an artist. Living there truth. That's what he likes. I like it. I we have a little extra we come back. Don't move. is the breakfast club morning morning. Everybody is the dj envy. Angela ye shall. I mean the guy we oughta breakfast club was still kicking it with low is x. charlemagne country community. Give you back when i came out. And i mean i don't know what people may think. I am still going to probably get back to doing some country music. Or and i mean 'cause i like different genres like making a lot of different music so off the country. Whatever country listen to you listen to country just it was only like i saw like one of these like country trash song so i was like damn what if i did have a better. And that's what happened. As i'm like i have no idea what john removed lunatic. Just categorized pop. Now you know. But i i do do a lot now. What would advise elton john. Giving you always hear about elton john you know putting it on certain individuals and giving them real. Og vice to give you what advice is giving me You know he pretty much. Just give me like the you know. Keep doing you be yourself. And what not and. He probably told me some other things. I can't remember right now. Because jesus christ john told you i've been talking a lot of people listening job. So who do elton. Do you respect like who do you hear from it sticks to you like when you hear sticks to mean maybe not. Maybe because we haven't talked in person. Well we've talked in person but not about that but like i literally sometimes look like kung motivation. Videos were not. This is outspoken. His men even though that may not always come out you know great or whatnot. I love that. And i wish i wish everybody was like that. You know. I want to be more like that. You know the thing about. He set that up for for himself. You know because he's always he's never going back on it. You know He's like. I said that it's done. Let's move on and people might damn moves on not tells a dominika tells the dominica. What's that about and he's from didn't even pronouncing right. Yes is half half here but mom is. My dad doesn't so he don't know that side Totally dominica is like from the point of view of when i first started making music. You know i'm writing kinda like. I woke up on the floor. The plastic bed mattress and my brother's house. And you know there was like a lot of like domestic violence like they're always like fighting with girls and whatnot and you know randomly like can shoot up into the sky just like them. This is a lot of k- signed And it was like you know talking about how. I didn't wanna go back to home. You know because. I know my stepmom was kind of on me because he wanted the best for me i guess. And it's kind of this name tells of dominica. Because i feel like me 'cause like that beautiful place you know anyways now. He doesn't know he's never been married not talking about dominican republic dominico saying people automatically think is dominican republic out of analysis. I haven't just like i've seen pictures. So it's kind of it's kind of like a tells of his beautiful place but it's it's like a the worst part of my life at that point you know. Yeah well you killed it at the met gala. I wanna to say favorite looks. But at night because i think like taking risks in fashion is so important and i think i love the way that as far as your packaging persona your music and the way they you perform but also the way you dress is so important for you to. Are you going to do something. Like maybe in fashion. Absolutely i feel like most of them one hundred percent can on it and like only that because i feel like a lot of times people like hops. Great into something really really even give about it. And i don't want that to happen the same with movies. It's going to be in movies and one day. But i wanna be lake dedicated to that. Pass you for you. That would have been. I love that show. Did you pass before love you for mattress finished my album. You know and i started getting ready to job singles in hainault. I can react to this differently now. You know and also just remember like we all experience the same in different ways like no matter how bad it may seem and it's like just being okay with that you know it happens in life we're going to have happened to us over and over. It's going to be a lot of bad parts. Lot happy parts. And i'm just i'm here for at all. I'm glad you went to therapy early. You know what i'm saying you. You're twenty two twenty two. And i feel like anybody. That's pissed off. Are the exact people that need to be pissed off because nobody could have predicted the success of old town road. Like there's nobody around you not even yourself now. So what happens when you end up with the biggest record ever. I mean what happens. Is you know you go on. Go on the barbershop. Show in charlemagne's like man what you're gonna do and he's like he's like they count you out man. I'm like okay. And then you know you just work on yourself and you come back out like a flower. You know you bloom. Jackson songs and videos and you know make the world shake a little bit. That's what i remember when you did to shop. You didn't seem as free as you do now. Like when i look at you now i can tell. This young man is really freeze really comfortable. You didn't seem that way back. Then i guess. I wasn't because it's the process. You know enough still like it's a steady throughout our whole life. I guess i'm just further along known in twenty nineteen. Did you ever think he going to be one where you did that. Ever cross your mind that never really crossing the line. All the time they were caught. Lil Nas X came out, but has hip-hop?
"You might have heard that the artists behind the hit old town road little Nasdaq's came out to his fans at the end of pride month. Garrick Kennedy is a staff writer at the L._A.. Times where he writes about music and he thinks this is a pivotal evitable moment for hip hop. When we spoke we started out by listening to a little bit of a little Nasdaq Song titled Closure Go back one one of the things that he he said is some y'all already know? Some of you all don't care but I'm interested in that last part of it because for a long time hip hop was incredibly incredibly and I think in many ways still remains incredibly homophobic. So how much is what he's doing exception to the rule in the history of hip hop. This is an audience that is now much younger so a lot of these attitudes that have been so prevalent in hip up for decades. It's just don't jive anymore. <hes> and that's an interesting thing because you know I've always been such a huge fan of this genre by as a queer man you know you <unk> get hurt a lot by a lot of people who will you might be fans of their music and then oh they said something that obviously is not great or even worse they've set. Let's learn their music and you know for so long. It had gone unchecked. I think eminem was really the only person who had ever had such a humongous controversy but it didn't end his his career he sat onstage with Elton John and he did what he needed to do. And then his next album he went right back to wrap in the way he was rapping and he still does and it's been eighteen years since that moment moment. You're putting your finger on a couple of different things one is kind of a rollback of the homophobia and sometimes the misogyny that's so critical to a lot out of lyrics over the years and the other is that as artists are rolling that back there also coming out and are those two things inextricably linked that ass more performers performers are being honest and open about who they are that the nature of the entire mix of lyrics is starting to get dialed back in the question that I've had is. Why are we seeing shifts now when also at the same time a lot of the music hasn't changed a lot of our attitudes have not changed? I mean little is XS. You know what twenty twenty one years old and you know he comes out. You know the second that happens you can see you know young who will get on the song with him and we'll do one one of these old town road. Remix is then doing an interview and said well. I'll be come out because I think people will not really pay attention to the music and they will just only worry about who who he's sleeping with a not so much of what the culture is still is despite all of the change in the progress that we've seen in the last ten years culturally the there have been lots of progress but also outside of music outside of hip hop. There's been an extremely <hes> I rate of of of change in terms of
