"And to have that on the same album as an industry. Baby right as a scoop. I think that there is something larger at play. That low naza is trying to say about the type of artists. He wants to be and the ways in which he sees himself moving through this industry right. That would rather see us. You know put people in very specific boxes. I can see where the confusion started. Allies jerry because especially in the beginning part of the album like lomas x. more overtly refers to an atlanta hip hop history. That i don't think had always been sort of a parent. Like i'm even thinking about that moment and dead right now where he's interpreting. Cash out by cash out. Which like if you're in atlanta it's kind of a blip in atlanta hip hop history. But it's very important So anything that is an important factor but at the same time. I think this conversation is important. Win the artists aren't necessarily dictating how their music is being categorized. And i think in this moment. A little gnaws x. Is making an overt decision to say like i am going to be categorized as a pop artists and i think he made that particularly apparent when he performed at the bt awards because he could have presented itself in any other way but to basically recreate the stage for remember. The time by michael jackson i think was a very deliberate and calculated decision to say that i am going to transcend these genres and incorporate different elements from other genres as so many pop artists. Do these days. Do we have any final thoughts. On little nasdaq's i know travel. You said you might have some critiques. Or just some like open questions about where he goes next. I think it's interesting to evaluate lil gnaws at six as a black queer artist right now and how some of his displays don't always hit in the ways that i think other black queer people wanted tuned. Come all preach the word you know. I do think that again right because we have to pay attention to low. Nasdaq's is an low naza needs to get these streams up low now needs to chart his twenty two wanted to write until taking all of that into account. I've had conversations with other black queer people that are just like you know like we like to see him when we want we root for him and all of that but in terms of that personal work right that self love work that he you know drops into the music here and they are. I think many of us are concerned about kind of his emotional in spiritual wellbeing as all of this is unfolding. I'm interested to see what low nasdaq's hulu nods ex is in five years in ten years right once he's moved. Pass this introductory phase if you will of being an open queer identified person And what that will do to the music when it's not novel anymore. I'm really curious to see what travel is talking about. Where trajectory is going to go. Because i think there is a possibility of lomas ex going direction of toddrick hall or frank ocean or like carving his own path. And i kind of hope that i'm anxious but optimistic. Because i feel like we've been able to see that like lots strong command over his image and over the sound and even the writing is very specific and like sounds like again someone who wanted to say something. I'm a little bit nervous. But i'm also optimistic about what that direction will be a longer term. I i agree with both of you. I think montero. I mean it is a debut album and i think what debut albums were so used to or accustomed to artists coming as fully formed but in all honesty especially with low nasdaq's only being twenty two. This is a very very formative stage for him in all respects of the word in this album. Like i hear the potential. That i even see. Somebody like cardi b. sort of hardest thing with invasion of privacy where she had also like the really tough job of channeling. All the savvy and the smarts and the humor that she normally projected towards social media and then channeling that into music that really stand on its own and that could gain the respect of her industry peers. So i see a lot of progress on monteiro on that front. I i agree. I think this is only the beginning. Honestly my these favorite subject matter in montero is when he is defensive about this one hit wonder status that he wants to sort of shake off or when he is paying attention to the sort of criticism and being like. Oh i told you so. I told you so. I understand that. That's the place where he is right now. But i am curious to see what happens when he decides that that doesn't really matter anymore luna's xs also where product of like this time right like how many twenty one year old twenty two year old kids do we know talking about anxiety and depression nowadays whereas ten fifteen twenty years ago. We weren't hearing that right right until like luna's x. comes at a time where we're having conversations about mental health we're having public discourse about blackness and clearness and you know all of these lines in ways that like we have had before but there are a lot more explicit and front and center and. I'm really excited about that. Because i feel like. I remember listening to the song and saying the cancer right. The kids are. I feel that i well. We want to know what you think. About little montero you can find us at facebook dot com slash pch and on twitter at p. c. h. And that brings us to the end of our show. "Feel like he keeps topping himself. You've got you know him taking these quote unquote masculine central environments the football field and then he's playing with brokeback mountain of all things like a movie that he would've only seen recently probably because he was a baby with him out right then on top of that. You have him promoting safe sex. And you've got billy porter showing up for a hot second. He just keeps sobbing himself. I'm curious what you how you feel about the imagery that he's using his his music. Because obviously you know. I think before old town run became a big hit. We only kind of knew that song and then the video comes out. And now he's kind of inseparable from his images like that is what is driving all of this in many ways. What do you think of how he's using all of these images i. I was thinking as. We're beginning this conversation back when i was in college. I'm a black gay man so we're always talking about the divas on the music right and so we would always put people into three categories in ranked order vocalist was as good as it got. Right singer was right beneath that and at the bottom was recording artists. I think that we need to add something into their. That is just about being an artist. Because i think that will not x has shown us that he is an artist right. He has something to say. He has a visual. he has a sound. he has an aesthetic. He has a perspective but listening to this album. I'm thinking to myself like oh little ex. Wanted to talk about things right. He wanted to talk about paying. He wanted to talk about trauma he wanted to talk about being queer. He wanted to talk about you know his life. Experiences traveled talked about in. Both of you talked about being kind of a diary And i felt like most of the songs it feels like. They were written to someone about the way that you hurt me or the way that you left me or the way that i want you or the way that you know what i mean like. It feels like he's talking about something. And i just really didn't expect him to have so much substance because i think that so often in the things that we see on. Social media is just like entertaining. I did not expect it to be so heavy right. Like he's got a song called dead right now where he's talking about wanting to die right and then making the choice to not tell me as she loved me wishy cianci mabvuta fever even shit. We saw song similar to that The suicide hotline number a couple of years ago like the way that those kinds of conversations have an impact on people is really really valuable as a gay man who remembers wanting to kill myself when i was nineteen that resonated and i was like. Oh wow i get what he's doing here and i appreciate it lou. Naza has been dealing with and talking about these themes in his music since to begin at. But it's the country trap discoursed that makes people not pay attention to the words that he's using an old town road right or it's the visuals that we're all paying attention to so you're not hearing him talk about you know a suicidal aviation in sun goes down right but all of these themes that we're talking about in bringing about. He's been talking about this the entire time in his career. Now we're able to seriously i think. Treat montero lamont hill right as an artist as a serious. You know text you know with this album. I'll just say quickly for those of you. That aren't familiar with prevail that was travails way of saying. I told you so. And i told you i think this conversation is a testament i think to The stronger songwriting. That we're hearing montero like travolta's right These themes have always been present in the music and even an old town road assam. That people have wanted to write off as a kid. I saw like there are some lyrics on there. That are not so. Pg okay so with monteiro. I think the biggest difference is that some of the details From his personal journey specifically about his family and about some coming to terms with his sexuality particularly while growing up in the bible belt. Yoke being raised in georgia in the atlanta area. They have made it into the songwriting. So that the songs feel more lived in. I was comparing monteiro to the seven ep which he released off the heels off old town road and the seven. Ep had a lot to live to because clearly he was trying to capitalize off at this big moment but the biggest takeaway for me was that there was some hesitation. He was referring to issues that he had with his family but the lyrics were so vague. That i was like is this about the parent. Trap is talking about lindsey low. Actually but i be curious to hear your thoughts on the song closure in particular august seven ep. And how that compares this particular moment because not too long after the seven ep out alone ause ex came forward and said like by the way. This was like my coming out. Moment closure was a song that made my sexuality clear and by the way on the cover of the seven. Ep i'm riding toward you know. A rainbow lit city tower. You know maybe it's just me but those themes or i guess. That sort of reckoning wasn't nearly as spelled out as they are on this album just back futures this is you know the ep is at the beginning stages of like do. I really wanted to these people that i'm gay. You know while i'm a rapper. And deal with all of that. And i think at this point. He's leaned all the way into it right. And you're right. I feel like with the lyrics in particular on a song like dead right now. For example right. He's talking about his issues with his father right when he came out with his his father. Those issues talking about devices that his mother is dealing with and how it's still an unfolding situation that he's having to grapple with. There's a lot of like real miss in this album. That i think you know folks just weren't expecting. Yeah what i find. So fascinating and heartening about his journey is the fact that when i think about the people who especially music who are able to sort of become the most famous or at least make the most money off of these things and be the ground breakers. They tend to be white people. When you think about someone like elton john or george michael. Obviously it took them longer to come out eventually. But we haven't really had a black pop star who has been able to be open and also be on the level of elton john or a. You know george michael Even if it was after the fact for them. Whitney was you know in the closet. Luther was in the closet. Little richard came out but then like went back in and there are so many things happening so to see someone like will not be able to do this as a black male pop star says to me that like. Maybe we've come a little bit of a way like we've come a little bit far in terms of being able to have the first gay popstar ever be a black person. In the fact that he seems to have control over what he's doing and doesn't feel like he's being controlled by these other forces i think is really really empowering. I wonder what you all think about that. Or if you have thoughts about that. I'm curious what you all think about the pop star versus rapper juxtaposition for low nasdaq's right. So like when. I look at this album on apple music. It's classified as a pop album and i feel like there are at least songs on here. That would could be submitted for awards that would be rap songs right and like i keep going back and forth on like..

"About this song. Sun goes down right and how you express yourself on that and just things you went through as a child you feel like sometimes those things do come back though they come back up but i feel like i'm able to recognize them and then makes things easier. you know. maybe we'll say okay. I can react to this differently now. You know and also just remember like we all experience the same in different ways like no matter how bad it may seem and it's like just being okay with that you know it happens in life we're going to have happened to us over and over. It's going to be a lot of bad parts. Lot happy parts. And i'm just i'm here for at all. I'm glad you went to therapy early. You know what i'm saying you. You're twenty two twenty two. You know people were just really easily angered at things that they already don't like you know it's kind of like how we people cancelled artist right. That's right you feel pressure to do everything you've done before. Like i gotta outdo old town role. When i got an out due to vm. As like you always think like. I have to out do it. I feel the pressure to always make sure. I'm doing my best on whatever i do. I know i'm gonna outdo like over and over and that's just like my like feeling cocky bitches like like knowing that you know that's how i feel like manifestation works in the first place then you gotta believe that in philly So yeah is there a time you plan to do something and then you change your mind. You like might be too far. Yeah i mean i. I'm pregnant right now. So i feel like i definitely have. Those cravings was different between this success. You're having now and the success you had with old time wrote this success. I feel like i'm much more in control of you know and i'm making my calculated moves in the way i feel. I need to make them. And i feel like anybody. That's pissed off. Are the exact people that need to be pissed off because nobody could have predicted the success of old town road. Like there's nobody around you not even yourself now. So what happens when you end up with the biggest record ever. I mean what happens. Is you know you go on. Go on the barbershop. Show in charlemagne's like man what you're gonna do and he's like he's like they count you out man. I'm like okay. And then you know you just work on yourself and you come back out like a flower. You know enough still like it's a steady throughout our whole life. I guess i'm just further along known in twenty nineteen. Did you ever think he going to be one where you did that. Assistance nobody aggravates men says it. Everybody knew what larry nassar was doing. Nobody did anything about it. Even you know the fbi. The united states olympic paralympic committee. The usa gymnastics everything. Here's what she said. The fbi and others within both usa g. and uso pc knew that nassar molested children and did nothing to restrict his access instead. They quietly allowed nassar to slip out the side door knowingly allowing him to continue his work nassar found more than one hundred new victims to molest. Those words in itself was one of the worst moments of this entire process for me. Well so imagine you're talking to the fbi recalling the awful horrific incident that happened to you and they say is that all right now. The fbi director. Christopher wray also testified and did apologize to the women. i'm deeply and profoundly sorry to each and every one of you. I'm sorry that so many different people let you down over and over again. And i'm especially sorry that there were people at the fbi who had their own chance to stop this monster back in two thousand fifteen and failed. I and my entire senior leadership team. That's why a lot of his absolutely a lot of just rolls off my sleeves handling well when people go at you handle it really well which is surprising because most artists they can't handle it. You see them breakdown. See them get into problems. Definitely do break now. Sometimes i'm not gonna live. But i'm never going to do publicly and you bring you gotta therapist guy like Something that ground you therapist one time rain and then like the concept of like. When i listened to a song like san goes down and i know that song is inspirational for a lot of people. Because it was one of the first gay films that he'd ever seen and it like struck him struck a chord with him and it was there some funny things in there where he was like talking about certain lyrics like one point. He's he was going through all these lyrics and what they mean and then he goes. I wanna feel on your ass in hawaii. And then he pauses and goes. That one's pretty self explanatory but yeah it was very sexual. I assume you're going to be talking about some of the very sexual lines. Like what a great suction. I don't know but it is true me regardless he did say about his sexual lines that he said it's about time i say something out of pocket in a song and he wanted to normalize gay relationships or like not even relationships just sexual lines from a gay persons standpoint and he wanted to normalize that in music because he said we have so many song lyrics about men fucking women women five percent jaded about that kind of music and the moment that it's like a man a man like people are like caught off guard and it's such thing and he's saying let's normalize it so he's like i'm just going to be myself and put that out there Which is great khazar. A lot of great lines about that. So yeah that's how it started. It was when he released a song and then the music video music video is like another level which is kind of what prompted an episode like this because in the music video. It's very a lot of heaven. Hell imagery satan. Himself is in their little knows ex. Rides on a stripper pole down into hell and then dances on grinds on satan then break satan's neck and like takes his crown like his horns so a lot of people had issue without specifically mainly christians who think that it's mocking their religion or it goes against..

This is Their new thing love lawsuits is the corporate way to punch somebody in the mouth. And you're not gonna win against a company like nike. They wanted too long and it was crazy. If you're going to do something like this at least get something out of it. Because i didn't even know the name of the company said it just now. Yeah i knew. I knew about nike. But i didn't know about the company that you know. It's interesting because legally we'll see what happens is just that a lot of people do customize these nikes and resell them for a lot of money. Online they've nike has never messed with that because they understand that sneaker culture but with this. They're arguing that it's harming their reputation by associating the brainless satanic symbols

Lil Nas X releases "Satan" Nikes containing real human blood
"So Luna's X had an eventful week and he dropped this song called Montero Comey by your name along with this Really crazy video. He's like seducing Satan with a lap dance, and then he snapped his neck and takes his horns. Well, he's teaming up to create a line of Nike Air Max 90 seven's and they've been called Satan's shoes because they have satanic imagery and Okay, it says they supposedly contain a drop of human blood like it's just a drop this mixed with the ink to color them so like they're the color of blood, but it just start up a lot of controversy. Super Bowl Winners and Losers
"We are going to move to the super bowl silly Ravitz segues for kids and Super Bowl commercials. I want to get your thoughts on the Super Bowl commercials and we're gonNA start with the top five commercials. According to add meter k the number one ranked commercial was GPS groundhog day featuring Bill Murray number two was smart. Pock number three was Google Loretto. Don't wear the man used Google Assistant to bring up memories of his late. Wife number four was Doritos the cool ranch which featured a showdown between Lil NAS and Sam Elliott and coming in at number five was rocket mortgage is comfortable spot featuring the guy who plays aqua man so yes so. Let's lead it off. Ron Gross. Yeah do you have. Do you have a stand out our favor. Overall thoughts on Super Bowl ads. I thought they were pretty good this year. I'm not one that eve cheer says says glued to the TV. He can't wait for them. But you know I always keep keep an eye on them and this year I think they were pretty good. Some fell flat for sure. The Google and boy that got me ahead of had excused myself fervent tended. I had some allergies needed to clear up routine because that was that was pretty emotion. Crush me. Yeah it was. It was tears. I you know I got glossy eyed. Yeah I got a little I got a little. I thought the second half commercials were much better than the first half. I like that list. That ad meter sure who had meter is or how they rate these ads but I did like I liked all that they they mentioned. I thought the Alexa ad from Amazon with Ellen Generous and Porsche Rossi drowsy. I thought that was very good. I like that the idea. Do you have like how do we live before we could just kinda ask Alexa. And they kind of went through different historical funny situation. I thought that was that was that was a nice ad that basically sleep pointed to the value of this but also spoke to the brand the brand power of Alexa and Amazon in general over. Okay I didn't I didn't think any particular the super funny Although I did like the the Bill Murray ad for jeep was pretty funny. Love had to explain to my daughter's because they didn't understand who bill Mary was and what ground home so I smacked pack made me laugh the most I think or maybe smile that was that was clever right I would. I would watch that again. I actually whereas most of these I would doesn't doesn't appeal to me to watch again so in terms of the business impact. Is there one of these as that. You look at what I did. I think that did the most for the business one that I particularly had a little bit of discussion in my family because because it was environmentally focus was the Michelob.

Lil Nas X came out, but has hip-hop?
"You might have heard that the artists behind the hit old town road little Nasdaq's came out to his fans at the end of pride month. Garrick Kennedy is a staff writer at the L._A.. Times where he writes about music and he thinks this is a pivotal evitable moment for hip hop. When we spoke we started out by listening to a little bit of a little Nasdaq Song titled Closure Go back one one of the things that he he said is some y'all already know? Some of you all don't care but I'm interested in that last part of it because for a long time hip hop was incredibly incredibly and I think in many ways still remains incredibly homophobic. So how much is what he's doing exception to the rule in the history of hip hop. This is an audience that is now much younger so a lot of these attitudes that have been so prevalent in hip up for decades. It's just don't jive anymore. <hes> and that's an interesting thing because you know I've always been such a huge fan of this genre by as a queer man you know you <unk> get hurt a lot by a lot of people who will you might be fans of their music and then oh they said something that obviously is not great or even worse they've set. Let's learn their music and you know for so long. It had gone unchecked. I think eminem was really the only person who had ever had such a humongous controversy but it didn't end his his career he sat onstage with Elton John and he did what he needed to do. And then his next album he went right back to wrap in the way he was rapping and he still does and it's been eighteen years since that moment moment. You're putting your finger on a couple of different things one is kind of a rollback of the homophobia and sometimes the misogyny that's so critical to a lot out of lyrics over the years and the other is that as artists are rolling that back there also coming out and are those two things inextricably linked that ass more performers performers are being honest and open about who they are that the nature of the entire mix of lyrics is starting to get dialed back in the question that I've had is. Why are we seeing shifts now when also at the same time a lot of the music hasn't changed a lot of our attitudes have not changed? I mean little is XS. You know what twenty twenty one years old and you know he comes out. You know the second that happens you can see you know young who will get on the song with him and we'll do one one of these old town road. Remix is then doing an interview and said well. I'll be come out because I think people will not really pay attention to the music and they will just only worry about who who he's sleeping with a not so much of what the culture is still is despite all of the change in the progress that we've seen in the last ten years culturally the there have been lots of progress but also outside of music outside of hip hop. There's been an extremely <hes> I rate of of of change in terms of
