"Night. He beat her. What's the sixty five percent to her paltry thirty four percent better than what the polls predicted by ten percent? I tell you it was so anti-climactic Glenn. I was having dinner with a friend. I gotta get back home got to turn on New York one. I got to see this election. I felt she was surgery. I thought I was going to be exciting within five minutes. The AP calls for quote, Ed van you had another Glasser Rosa. Pretty much at Cynthia Nixon has gone down in defeat losing to Andrew Cuomo will have to listen to that arrogant condescending voice for another four years. I mean, he's not gonna call the radio station. Yeah. Well, you know, what I'm gonna I'm going to be audited. That's what's going to happen. To me. I'm gonna be audited all the all the people lined up together one so Cuomo lined up with his Lieutenant governor, Kathy hotel, and but she didn't win so big. I mean, she only one fifty three to forty six Jemaine Williams, and then Latisha James is poised poised to make history. Yes, she won forty had forty percents for out thirty one, Sean Patrick Maloney twenty-five so Latisha James. She wins will become the first black female attorney general. There you go New York state, zephyr was a big fizzle there appeared to be a moment where she was gaining nobody in the debate they head for the attorney general everyone was ganging up on zephyr because they thought she was going to win. But she admitted nothing and then interesting, though, those Democrats who align with Republicans five of them went down hard left wing progressive. Democrats shows you that that Blue Wave is really big in this city. So the election leads off our big three defeat in my voice. I really wanted Cynthia to knock down the governor also in the big three hurricane Florence. It's hanging over the Carolinas. "Governor Cuomo cruised his party's nomination to third term yesterday and carried several fellow statewide Democrats on his coattails New York City public advocate Letitia James who aligned herself. With Cuomo became the first woman of color to be nominated for statewide office from a major party when she beat out three check. Challenges for the attorney general slot Cuomo now faces Republican Mark Molinaro, the duchess county executive in the general election. Joining us now to break down the results WNYC's Albany reporter Fred mogul, and Cleo Chang who's been writing about the attorney general's race for Gotham is good morning to you both thanks for being here. Good morning, Richard having I know as a late night last night. Fred, let's start with you. The governor's race came out pretty much as the polls predicted Cuomo picked up sixty six percent of the vote is challenger actor activists Cynthia Nixon got thirty four percent. What's the story in this race? You know, it's that whatever problems people have with corruption in Albany with the New York City subway with what Nixon called corporate democratic rule didn't matter enough people like what Cuomo's achieve they believe. He's a strong counterweight to President Trump, and they believe in Nixon's very left wing vision from New York, or they believe she could deliver it or they just didn't want to take a chance on her in these tumultuous times, you know, ultimately, she did about the same as zephyr teach outed for years ago that would almost no name recognition at the time. And even. Resources or the governor still has to win the general election, of course. And that's not a given. So what do you think Molin arrows line of attack will be does he aligned himself with the president President Trump, which I think he'll keep his distance from from President Trump. That's what he's done so far Trump's very unpopular in New York. So I think we can see Molinaro keeping that distance staying away. Of course, Cuomo will try to tie Trump Ramona's anchor Molinaro, meanwhile has been hitting Cuomo hard on the culture of corruption Albany to Cuomo administration officials have been convicted of corruption Molinaro will also talk about the size of government, New York, the high taxes and with the state tended potentially turning from Republican democrat who warned everyone about the dangers of entrusting the entire state government to one single party. Okay. Our colleague WNYC reporter, Jessica Gould was with Nixon last night. She didn't find much enthusiasm among progressives for supporting Cuomo in the general election on let's listen to this clip from Dan Kanter of the working families party. She asked him if he's going to vote for Cuomo haven't decided. The night is young means a lot still to figure out here. Obviously, you don't want the Republicans to win. But you gotta think things through here. So Fred how big of a problem? Do you think this is for the governor Cuomo where seed more primary votes than any governor New York history? Some Nixon voters clearly won't vote from no matter what they were just a third of the primary electorate a lot more people will be showing up to the polls in November than they do in September. So it doesn't seem like the holdouts would probably put that much of a dent in Cuomo's support. And as cantor himself suggested if the race appears close going into election day of even the working families party, the people on the far left will hold their nose in and pull the trigger for Cuomo. Okay. Cleo, let's turn to the attorney general's race. Just James now, the democratic nominee to be the state's top law enforcement officer. She's a lawyer she used to work in the attorney general's office. What is she saying that she wants to do if she wins the general election so tissues made it really clear that she will be unbought and unbought if she wins the nomination, and I think as long as she's held accountable to that promise, she's got a pretty aggressive platform. And in strong platform of actual actually do as a g his promised to investigate Donald Trump's businesses charities. She wants to use her platform to advocate for public campaign. Financing closing the Elsie loophole. She wants to prosecute predatory for profit colleges advocates for criminal Justice reform, and she also central take on pull corruption Albany, and we'll push Cuomo to grant the autonomy when it comes to prosecuting corruption. I think because our campaign raised a lot of questions about her closeness with Cuomo this'll be where voters will have to keep an eye out and make sure she sticks. Yeah. Yeah. Few weeks ago, you wrote about James accepting Cuomo support and kind of aligning herself with the establishment could kind of a double edged sword. Here. It seems to work out for right now. What's your take away from it? I mean, obviously, the strategy paid off James won pretty handily, and she's always had trouble with fundraising. But in this race with the help of Cuomo and the establishment, including labor unions. She was able to raise a lot more money from big donors and turn out her voters. Also to shames is obviously, no Joe Crowley. You know, she has a strong progressive record for that helps the results. Another thing to note is the factor that Sean Patrick Maloney was. Supported by Wall Street and real estate donors played you know, a lot of people saw him as a teach out spoiler because he ends up for ended up battling for votes upstate. So overall. The takeaway here is that the New York political machine remains secure in its picks at the top of the ballot. We still saw a lot of successful upsets down ballot. When it came to challenge. The IDC's ought to think. No, we're seeing this progressive insurgency go away. Fred we let's talk about other statewide races of Lieutenant governor Kathy hotels. The incumbent also the nominee now. But it wasn't easy for her. What happened here in this race? Yeah. That was a bit of a nail biter and for much of the evening to up against judge Williams, a city councilman. He he did a very strong showing people seem to be willing to take a chance on him in ways, they weren't for Nixon or for zephyr teach out, you know, on the far left of the party people. Obviously a lot of people split their ticket. He got almost almost half the vote Hokuto won by only a few percentage points around the order forty fifty two to forty eight. A lot of people who are these people. Why were they doing this some of them probably liked the idea of a very activists Lieutenant governor from the left wing the party, maybe a kind of a little bit of a check on Cuomo. They felt that he had paid his dues. He did have a lot of support in Brooklyn worries from in a way that Nixon herself and perhaps effort teach out. Likewise didn't have coming through the activist wing as opposed to having served time in elective office and get a track record that people believed in ultimately it was not enough. But it did raise his profile statewide, and we'll see where he goes from there. Fred, we just have about a minute left. Can you talk about some of the state Senate candidates who took on longtime incumbents would formerly voted with the Republicans? They're part of the IDC or the independent democratic conference. I think that's that's really fascinating. Because well, as I said Nixon came up so far short didn't didn't make any headway from zephyr teach out record in two thousand fourteen in challenging Cuomo, and the story all summer long has been this off. Ultra progressive wing of the Democratic Party. Throwing the bums out that did happen in the state Senate level. It just didn't happen statewide. Okay. WNYC's Fred mogul and Cleo chango waits for Gotham is thank you both. Thank you so.

"WNYC four three three nine six nine two or tweet a question. We'll watch our Twitter feed. Just use the hashtag ask the mayor. Good morning, mister male. Welcome back to WNYC. Good morning, Brian. Well, it's our last Friday before the primary and your wife has endorsed and the attorney general's race effort teach out, but you haven't endorsed for a AG or governor. Do you have something for us? Well, let me give you my scorecard right now. And what I'm thinking at the moment. First of all in the state Senate. I've endorsed two of the anti IDC challengers, Jessica Rama's, in queens has Eleanor my Rian Brooklyn and think they are both really doing great at winning back those seats for real Democrats, and to have a real democratic majority in Albany, which the city and state need on attorney general. Yes, my wife's Arlene endorsed, zephyr teach out. I'll be making a decision in the next forty eight hours or so I looked at it. I'm watched the coverage with interest from your debate. That you hosted last night. I wanna thank you for doing that. I say one thing really struck me. I have known Sean Maloney for two decades. And I like and respect him. I did not know about his voting record. I know he comes from a conservative district, but I saw some real philosophical differences that concern me particularly his vote to water down the Dodd Frank Bill. I'm very very concerned about the situation on Wall Street. I don't think it's impossible that we would have another recession based on the activities of the financial industry financial industry needs more regulation, not less. So that surprised me? And I think at this point in the Democratic Party. We are really trying to decide who we are. And I'm from the progressive wing of this party that wants tough regulation on Wall Street and once on approach government that focuses on the needs of working people and challenges corporations. So that causes me concern about Sean, I respect him. But. That was an eye opener for me. But I'll make that final decision in terms of all of those candidates in the next forty eight hours or so and then the same on governor and Lieutenant governor I've said I wanna make a final decision by the end of the weekend. And let people know what it is. And why it is and obviously considering a whole range of factors as I do that you saw on governor Lieutenant governor that times now has endorsed Williams in the Lieutenant governor primary they had previously endorsed governor Cuomo in the gubernatorial, so that's a split ticket. Endorsement people can do that for governor in Lieutenant governor in this primary they endorse KOMO for reelection. But not his current Lieutenant governor, Kathy hotel, any reaction to that. Well, it's something that we've seen previously in history. It's an interesting take because you know, there's two different versions of what Lieutenant governor's office could be there is the Lieutenant governor. Sort of ceremonial office waiting in the wings. And then there is a vision which we've seen in this state in the past. And we certainly seen in other states of a more consequential Lieutenant governor who has their own portfolio and their own views and serves as something of a check and balance. So I was very interested in the position of the times took, and I think a lot of people are going to pay attention to it because the central question is Albany. How are we gonna change Albany? The one thing I think has come out this election year, and it's been a very good debate this year, but what if you had to boil it down governor governor attorney general one team is coming through profoundly Albany as a whole is not effective enough is to ribbon by corruption does not represent modern progressive government. How are we going to fix that? How are we gonna create an entirely new approach worthy of the people of this state? And I think it's been a healthy dialogue. But certainly one of the options people may. Look at is having a governor and Lieutenant governor that have different perspectives and that creates greater pressure for change. I won't take that as quite as an endorsement, but it gives us a clue. I said governor on the governor on AG. But you know, I can be a an observer, and I can tell people while I'm thinking about endorsing question. Some of the things seeing what I'm seeing is a energy for change that I think is unprecedented in this state on your critique of congressman Maloney couldn't say that. There are some compromises that many New York Democrats who are progressives. Make when they're in swing districts zipper, teach out also got fire in this debate in last week's debate as you now for. Having taken a not unambiguous possession, a more and big US position on the safe act the gun control law when she was running for congress upstate and look at Senator gillibrand who had made some compromises along those lines when she represented in upstate district and look at the unabashed progressive she's turned into now that she's elected statewide. So how much do you really wanna kill congressman Maloney for that? Oh, no, first of all, I know him. I like him. I respect him. It's not about killing quote, unquote. Anyone it is about having an honest discussion of what we want our next attorney general, and I do think the next attorney general of New York has to be the sheriff of Wall Street. This has been an issue in this campaign. Let me say it very squarely as someone who represents the city of New York. And the folks that work on Wall Street Wall Street needs the sheriff and Wall Street needs tough regulation, and if it doesn't have it we will have another crash if we don't have a tough regular. Tori approach to Wall Street. Wall Street will drive us into the ground. We've seen it time. We saw it in nineteen twenty nine we saw a decade ago. We'll see it again. So I this is my central concern. I need to know that the next attorney general really be tough on Wall Street, and by the way who has been successfully prosecuted who brought on the great recession and the crash a decade ago almost no one. So I think we have to know that the next attorney general will be absolutely committed to that. And we have to look at all of their records absolutely consistencies and inconsistencies, but I'm saying this one stood out to me because reducing regulation on Wall Street, particularly in age of Donald Trump. I think is dangerous endorsing a couple of the opponents of the IDC the breakaway democratic faction that help keep the Republicans in power in the state Senate. They're eight of them, and you've endorsed the challenges of to why not just run the table on that and say IDC reelection. No, every situation is different. And there are some. Cases, where I know the candidates. Well, others were I don't, you know, I have to look at this case by case. I mean, this is a blunt reality of not just being a person with my own personal views, but also being the steward of this city and having to think about governance of the city, and how we continue our work at Albany next year in Albany. Everything's up for grabs Brian rent regulation. And I wanted to say all your listeners we had the ultimate chance next year to strengthen rent regulation and save affordable housing in the city every vote for state Senate and all these other officers is going to be crucial to that. We have Merrill control of education up which will determine whether we can continue to make change in our school system. We have how we're going to fund the MTA, and I believe in the millionaire's tax. And my hope is that with a Democratic Senate. We could finally get a millionaires tax and fund the MTA for the long haul. These are huge issues. So I have to balance my political views and what I think is important in terms of the interests of. The city. But in the two cases where I have endorsed so far, Jessica Rama's ends Eleanor. Mary I have no doubt that they are serious committed. Progressives who will be part of the Democratic Party and will not work with the Republicans in Albany. What about the one particular case of incumbent Mirasol, I'll contra from Manhattan. Westside who's going to be on the show later this morning. In addition to her challenger, Robert Jackson. I read that you or your political action committee has given Jackson money and yet you're not making a verbal endorsement explain that. Yeah. No. It's a fair question. And I am still waiting to have a further conversation with Robert before deciding that Robert and I were colleagues in the city council. I think he has been an extraordinary leader on the topic of education. Obviously, he was one of the lead plaintiff in the case. That was brought to get New York City fair funding for our schools by the state of New York a case that he and his colleagues one, but we still have not received billions of dollars. We are owed in education funding that would be. Transcendent for our school system. So I think the world of Robert Marhsall someone I have a long and positive relationship with as well. I disagree with her choice to join the IDC and to collaborate with the state Senate Republicans, but I'll make a final decision on that. Once I talked to Robert Meghan. In park slope. You're on WNYC with mayor de Blasio. Hello mega. Hi. Good morning. Brian. Good morning, mayor de Blasio quick comment and a quick question. We are so eager here in district. Fifteen Mr Mayor for your announcement about the recommendations on integration and inclusion in our schools, and you know, we can be patient for another week or two people in this 'cause are quite used to the need for patients. But we want you to understand we hope that you understand how singular of a momentous is, and we really urge you to time. The implementation of any of these recommendations that you accept in full accordance with urgency of this moment. And my question is that crime has been really quite explicit about his intentions to support these recommendations as well as in his critiques of the idea of using screen. Segregate in our public schools. And I wondered if you would echo his support. Megan. Thank you so much for the question. Couple of things first of all on the timing our position on how the best approach the district. Fifteen proposal will be walked down this month for sure in plenty of time for any implementation for the next round of admissions second district fifteen is my home district. I was a school board member here. I was also on something we call the diversity committee on a PS three seventy two where my children Karen, Dante went to elementary school. And we were trying to find ways to bring in students from a wider range of backgrounds across district fifteen which includes red hook, which includes sunset park and start breaking down some of the visions. We didn't have the tools we need it. And bluntly at that time, we did not have the support a department education. Richard Crohn's is doing I one hundred percent support. And in fact, I hired him in large measure because he saw education as a pathway to social Justice. And we now believe we have tools that are really changing our approach and allowing us to do a much better job at diversifying our schools. So there's been an evolution and a good one in the last years of our approach figuring out something that would actually work. I have always been reticent to put forward a vision without a way to get there. I now increasingly believe we have real tangible ways to get there. And that also speaks to the screen school issue. More and more even before chancellor Peron's. We were examining the question of the screen schools are obviously examining the question of specialized schools, we have a tangible specialized schools proposal, which is going to go to Albany to finally bring real diversity to specialized schools. We're also in the process of coming up with a series of changes around the screen schools to make sure that they continue to be great schools with a more diverse student body and breaking down some of the. Mistakes previously in the admissions process. I think were inadvertently cases exclusionary so yes, all of that is proceeding, and there's real momentum the difference honestly today versus two or three years ago is we have found solutions, we didn't know about then we didn't know would work that. Now, we see working particularly from the ground up with real local support, and we're going to build on those rapidly. On the timing of the approval if it's going to be approval of the district fifteen plan the chancellor is here on Tuesday. And he said look forward in the next forty eight hours. Now, it's been three days and you're saying sometime this month, if something happened to delay that announcement, I the chancellor I think the world of and we are absolutely philosophically aligned. I think in his eagerness for change. He said the time line that was a little quicker than could actually be achieved. I've talked to him about it directly. Definitely this month. Craig in Manhattan, you're on WNYC with the mayor. Hello, Craig high misdemeanor. Hi, brian. I'm calling about the proposed plan to relocate the carriage system to the central park..
